Well this is how I feel about it and I'll tell you why there are reasons to be positive

Pros

- The lack of origins will allow bioware to focus their storytelling into telling a cohesive story with plenty of twists and turns.
- A single focused experience is not the same as a guided one aka shepherd, as he was predefined with a chosen background ie spacer. In this game we will be largely forging our background over a period of 10 years (minus the fleeing the blight part)
- A timespan of 10 years means that any relationships with characters we meet will be meaningful and likely to change contextually in very significant ways which was just not possible in da origins. Because there is only one origin these relationships can focus on maximising the available options to the player in terms of where they want to take it.
- A dynamic and evolving world. Events and actions we take as hawke will impact the world and there will be changes in how others view us over time - compare that to origins when you revisited an area and everything was always largely the same. (except after story 'trigger' events in ferelden which were all packed into the end game.)
- World and art design seem more of a consideration now; Having one origin allows the world to be presented cohesively to the player to guarantee playback reception- in contrast dalish elf origin felt rushed compared to human noble and mage origins.

Cons

- Having a single origin and only one voice actor will make replaying game with different choices harder
- Limits alternative perspectives of the world from other origins

Yeah but funnily enough does not look that way in game. Boys and girls time to grow up methinks, maybe add something constructive?

But back to your topic, I think there maybe be an origins thing, just not like DA:O.

If you remember back in Mass Effect, when you were making information about your Shepard you had a choice of his background: Spacer, Colonist, Earth-Born

Then you had a choice of Psych: War-Hero, Survivor, Ruthless

I hope they do something like that in DA2

I bet you at least a few hundred people do that for their character.

Excellant and most cogent points, nicely put, but chin is still reminiscient of Michael Schumacher.

I'd go with Michael =]; seriously through the character editor did not get the picture right - looks fine in game.

On to the topic at hand; anyone feel like contributing there hopes and expectations for a single origin game?

lol the chin looked kind of big in the game too, but don't get offended! My femCousland has a weird looking nose. I think it's kind of difficult to make an attractive person in Dragon Age unless you use mods. Or maybe I'm just terrible at creating characters, either way. lol

Anyway, back to the orginal topic...

I agree with you. Although I'll miss playing elves and dwarfs, I'm excited about the game spanning ten years and making Hawke my own. Ugh it's going to be so hard waiting until March!!!

i for one think that you make valid points but some players would add lack o immersion due to voice acting but yeah your chin does look wide and large.(just kidding)

I agree about the focusing on storytelling part. That's what made the planescape torment so great. That game is as RPG as they get, and it only had one hero..

... and the chin reminds me of double h in beyond good and evil

Ya know, another possibility would be to have Origin stories that, to put it one way, serve as chapter two of the story, rather than chapter one. Granted, then it's not technically an "origin", but it still keeps the same sort of story customization.

What I mean is, we start the game in Lothering, and the events that move you from Lothering to the Free Marches stay largely the same no matter what, but what happens to you immediately after you reach the Free Marches can be different from character-to-character, like DAO's Origin Stories. So when you get to the Free Marches, you might join in with a mercenary company, or a criminal element, or be trained by an apostate, or picked up by the local Circle, and so on.

It keeps the 'you're a penniless refugee' as a constant, but has multiple options as to where your character got his training.

I hope that some events in Lothering act similarly to Origins in DA:O, ending in the character fleeing Lothering to the Free Marches.

...That chin is tremendous...

I think having a preset name adds to immersion. Why? In the original game everyone referred to your character as "the Grey Warden". I found this totally immersion breaking, especially when whomever I was sleeping with called me that. It's even worse given that there were actually 2 grey wardens in your party. Having a pre set name fixes this.

OP's pic reminds me of how much it sucks that we can't have balling facial hair with our large chin characters. He's as smooth as a baby.
