Morig, LG human male cavalier. With Jaheira.

Jaheira suggests we only travel in daylight no death by vampire thanks. Viconia agrees to stop playing with fire and I am relieved to find she has remembered all her spells wisdom still 21 thanks to 3 tomes in BG1.

A pair of stone-golems kick me around, then Jaheira is stunned and FODed by Rayic Gethras and with 150k xp I have to cheat upstairs downstairs with him. Once Rayic is dead we raise Jaheira and recruit Edwin intelligence 19 thanks to a fourth tome in BG1.

Clear off Nalia, I'll sort your problems out but you won't be travelling with me. Neither will you Yoshimo. So starts the adventures of Morig, Jaheira, Viconia, Edwin and uh Jan.

First, we free Hendak. Then to a slaver compound where we are buffed and removed a snare before scaring Haegan.
Posted Image

Slight issue/bug. The lovers ring is returned and a false message about inventory full instead of Lilacor so stuck with the Sword of Chaos a bit longer. Maybe because Jaheira had the hand and was a bit too far away?

After we uncover Rejiek as a murderer I retrieve Anarg's cup for Reynald de Chatillon. Anarg and his fallen paladins almost overwhelm me they often muller my low level parties but two extra healing potions are enough until hold person and bruiser mates stop them dead.

A bit of shopping emotion and lower resistance in exchange for loot is followed by helping Giran re-unite with his mother outside the circus. Edwin and Viconia are getting edgy again reputation 17.

No sign of Valen or her mistress at the graveyard but then it is daylight. We head underground, through spiders and ettercaps until Azuredge makes short work of the various undead I can't remember it being this efficient before, assume there is something in the fixpack that either un-nerfs it or ubers it. Edwin clutches the nether scroll and we depart into a spiders den. With Pai'na dead we head back to the surface and check each crypt out.

Our journey to the city gates is interrupted and we are forced to rescue Renfeld. After returning him we agree to help Xzar, but Jaheira is poisoned by Baron Ployer. I insist on a good nights rest before dealing with him. His mages turn nasty but Jaheira casts insect plague and the battle is soon over.

We rest in the Copper Coronet before accepting a job from Lord Jierdan and collecting a ransom silver pantaloons and reputation drops to 15, result. Off to help Firkraag, only we are ambushed and Edwin is refusing to fight what a girl.

Scura, wizard slayer dualled to thief, has conquered BG1 and is starting the long haul.  Here are her stats on exit from the dungeon.
Posted Image

She used stealth and backstabs extensively in the dungeon.  I was considering taking on the mephits in the elemental plane, but there were two steam mephits there so that even if one was backstabbed the other would probably have stunned Scura (which would be a death sentence).  Therefore just stealthed past them to talk to the genie.

Quick Note on Alessandra's Game:

Alessandra is currently making her way through Firkraag's Pleasure Palace. The objective here is Dragonslayer which will round out her immunity item set (Confusion, Enfeeblement, Charm, Hold, Stun, Slow, Feeblemindedness). The Spear of the Unicorn allows her to reliably make the save on Stinking Cloud's Sleep effect. Maze, Imprisonment, Emotion and Death Magics will be the remaining threats if and when she acquires the sword. At that point, it may behoove her to go to Spellhold for the Slayer form.

I'll post more on Alessandra when I get the chance.

Best,

A.

Btw 1. Alora is still alive. I'll likely return to her game once Alessandra is finished. I just got curious about Wizard Slayers.

Btw 2. I've noticed an issue with the Sword of Arvoreen in this run. It applies a -2 movement rate penalty (Save v. Wands) with each hit. The problem is that if an enemy takes to many thwacks, their movement rate wraps around zero and they become super-fast. This usually isn't game relevant since Alessandra typically drops back and uses her range weapons once she has drained her enemy's movement rates to near zero, but it is potentially irksome. If anyone is aware of a fix for this, let me know..

Fudge.

I made a number of big (metagaming) mistakes in the final Spellhold fight.

I picked the wrong conversational options with Lonk, having read online that he can be intimidated into letting me have the keys without paying, provided a character with a high charisma, and thought I could always fall back on bribery.

Wrong. I had to fight him, unprepared, losing Imoen and all my prebuffs (hadn't remembered I wouldn't have a chance to cast SI:A after talking to him). So I fought him, thinking I'd at least have a chance to rest afterwards and used up most of my high level antimagic.

Wrong again.

The Irenicus fight cost me the remaining charges in my Rod of Resurrection, until finally I was fighting him with four characters with little antimagic left. I was just turning the battle around again, having protected my party from evil again and summoned a Nycaloth, now being reasonably certain I could outlast Irenicus... when the game crashed due to a TobEx error.

I'm not sure what to do now. Benefiting from the crash seems to run counter to the spirit of the challenge, but recreating the fight as it happened, including all of my previous errors, is virtually impossible with all the random elements that inevitably factor into these things.

You should be able to recreate the rough outline fairly easily, i.e. let Imoen get killed and expend your high-level spells. After that - well you might be depending on meta-game knowledge, but that's what all no-reload runs are about anyway.

Mostly, the problem is that I had some good random events there, as well as bad - Imoen might've made her save and lived in the Lonk fight, but Viconia's MR might have failed and gotten her killed, too. And the Irenicus fight had way too much going on to recreate due to a much larger amount of similar factors.

Oh well. I'll have to think about it

Grond0's solution makes sense to my mind.

I don't think he was suggesting recreating every step of either fight but rather the state at the end of the Lonk fray.

In the alternative, you could just fight Lonk again and go from there.

The challenge has never required players to recreate actions that occured in between a save and a glitch. It's really a personal choice. Just do what you feel comfortable with personally and share your decision with everyone else.

Best of luck!

A.

Btw. For future reference, if you want to get the key without paying Lonk or fighting him and have a high charisma it is possible. A high charisma character can get him to say "You think...you could. There's a new way to look at it." Followed by, "You know, I really preferred Wanev as director. It's a shame what Irenicus did to him. I will help you, I think." A character with a low charisma would get "No, no I really don't think you can pull it off. You are just not convincing enough in your manner."

Ah, perhaps I just picked the wrong conversation trees entirely, since I got neither of those options.

This is mostly just about me being personally bothered by not knowing what would have happened. With Irenicus' high level spells depleted, the Nycaloth by our side, and Hador still having Spell Turning + Spell Shield active and a SI:A memorized, I'm 99% sure that I was going to win. It's that 1% that bugs me.

Ah, well. I tried the recreation route, and that was it for Hador. I have to admit, I've never seen the illusionary copies of the party fight that well: they were the decisive factor in the fight.

In other words, final update.

I had much better luck with Lonk, who now opened with a different set of spells - with Simulacrum instead of Abi-Dalzim's, so Imoen survived. However, I made the critical mistake of not taking out the clones fast enough and one by one, opting to try for invisibility and better positioning as my opening move, instead - I was hoping to bombard them with Horrid Wiltings and take them out quickly. Alas, I couldn't take them out before they scattered and attacked my party one by one. Kudos to them, even if it cost me the game.

Ultimately, my fatal flaw was misremembering the last point of safe buffing (that is, before talking to Lonk) Had I been properly protected teleporting into the fight, I would have been able to quickly defeat the duplicate party without fearing debuffs and offensive spells. I'll remember it the next time that I feel like tackling BG.

My apologies for steering you in that direction.  However, since misery loves company you'll be glad to know that Scura has also just fallen.  She got the Suna Seni ambush immediately after clearing the Copper Coronet and didn't want to run away and leave Arbane.  She opened with a backstab, thinking that the wizard would buff himself and she would have time to go away and hide.  However, I think the SCS script must assume that the slaver ambush has successfully occurred (and therefore pre-buffs have been put on), even though this was foiled by Scura's stealth.  In any event the wizard cast a confusion, which took effect on a stealthed Scura.  She of course then attacked and was promptly despatched.

One oddity occurred at the Copper Coronet when Hendak was killed by Lehtinan.  From first playing the game I used to help Hendak in this fight, but caused him to turn hostile on one occasion when I think I killed Lehtinan too quickly.  Therefore, I've been letting Hendak fight on his own, assuming that he was scripted to win.  He obviously has a big advantage since I've seen him win often, but he can lose!

Not to worry. I contemplated using my "second chance" to buff properly before talking to Lonk, which would have made the fight easy, but ultimately, I felt that doing so would have delegitimized the entire rest of the run (for me, personally).

It was a good run, though, and once I get over my disappointment, I think I'll go with another Swash/Mage. Hador was a really strong character, and could have gone much further than this.

Also, my condolences on Scura. Perhaps sharing our pain will make it easier to bear!

One oddity occurred at the Copper Coronet when Hendak was killed by Lehtinan.

I've seen that happen before, I think once, but my favorite Copper Coronet oddity was the one where the dwarven slave-gladiator in the pit-fight cinematic actually beat the troll with his bare hands. It was game-breaking and forced a reload, but for a while there I was really happy for the little fellow!

Sorry for your loss Gorthaur X. It was fine run nonetheless.

With SCS, the clones do fight well. They get your items and appear to have access to the consumables in your quick slots as well.

When my Bounty Hunter, Alesia, did that fight she had a bunch of Potions of Invisibility when the Clone spawned. She ignored the Clone, and watched it chunk all the inmates. She then had to fight Irenicus alone.

With Alora, I stuffed the invisibility potionsin her sack when the Clone was spawned, and then had her chunk it immediately. The inmates went onto defeat Irenicus with little aid from Alora.

The points that the Clones do play a significant tactical role in that battle and that you can take measures to weaken then before hand if need be.

Best of luck with your next run Gorthaur X.

Best,

A.

I just noticed your note on Scura Grond0. That's a bummer.

I wonder if the Suna Seni trigger is influenced by Level? That might explain why she showed so late in Alessandra's run?

With a WS->Thief, it may be better to go for Lilacor (Confusion, Charm Immunity) before leaving the Slums. I didn't want to send Alessandra up against that pair of Shaman without Hold Person Immunity, but stealth would solve that problem. Something to try in a future run perhaps.

Alessandra: Wizard Slayer (The Greatest Hits So Far)

Since I wasn't planning to post on Alessandra, I don't have many screenshots of her early adventures. I'll try to provide some coverage nonetheless.

The route was as mentioned, Copper, Government, Gates, Umar Hills. Alessandra then returned to Athkatla, bought Vhailor's Helm, dropped Suna, and headed to the Keep after picking up Lilacor and Ilbratha.

The Keep was followed by Trademeet and, of course, the ever valuable Shield of Harmony. She is now in the Windspear Hills.

Tactically, Alessandra approaches melee fighters by using the Sword of Arvoreen to drain their Movement Rate. She then withdraws and finishes at range. Against casters, she sends Simmy Alessandra in first while hanging back and equiping an appropriate protection item. Once Simmy Alessandra has shutdown the caster's spells with Wizard Slayer melee hits, Alessandra comes in for the kill.

This has worked so far. However, I am worried about how she will handle full parties. The upcoming Samia fight is a concern.

Here are a few screenshots.

Azuredge made short work of the Umar Hills Shades. (A Pro Undead scroll at the end didn't hurt either...)

Posted Image

Lacking Hold Person Immunity -and seeing the Mage was buffed- Alessandra focused her attention on Suna Seni's Cleric to start. She then darted away, summoned Simmy Alessandra, and brought the crew down with a hail of Ice Arrows (Tuiganx2).
Posted Image
Posted Image

Arbane led to Lilacor and Ilbratha. Alessandra always keeps the Sword of Arvoreen near when fighting Golems.
Posted Image

Alessandra's new swords were put to good use in De'Arnise Keep.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Torgal was a close call, but a win nonetheless.
Posted Image

The slavers were next.
Posted Image

Alessandra enlisted the aid of a friendly gnome when she visited the Druid Grove. He was asked to cast one spell: Invisibility 10' Radius.
Posted Image

In Firkraag's Pleasure Palace, Simmy Alessandra has led the way wielding the Flail of Ages. Alessandra has hung back, and picked off Slowed enemies with Azuredge.
Posted Image

With Belm, Casters now face 6-8 Spell Casting failure inducing melee hits per round.
Posted Image

I'll try to provide more complete coverage of Alessandra's upcoming adventures. That said, I wouldn't be at all surprised if this run ends with the next major fight (Samia). Wish her luck Wizard Slayer fans. :)

Best,

A.

Btw. My biggest folly this run was purchasing Kachiko's Wakizashi. Despite the apparent uselessness of 2 rounds of Wisdom drain with a Save v Death to nullify, I decided to give it a go simply because I often find lesser used weapons to be more helpful then expected. This one hasn't paid off yet at all and it cost 23k. Bummer.

Firkraag does have a Wisdom of 3 though so it may end up being worth the sticker price...

A party with Malison available might be able to pull of a very quick kill with this thing.

Indeed. I thought about putting away my consumable before the battle, but I decided against it - while I'm usually fine by having my party prepare "on a hunch," there's no reason why the party would have expected to need to do something that specific.

I'm not sure if the SCS AI for that battle has improved or if I've just gotten worse, but I recall the clones being pushovers in my previous fight against them (years ago). In retrospect, like I said, I should have killed them - particularly Edwin and Hador - immediately, as they completely annihilated the inmates. Clone-Hador summoning my "emergency fiend" was the final insult. Wait, no, the final insult was when summoned the emergency fiend, only to have my protection from evil dispelled.

Condolences both.

Morig, LG human male cavalier. With Jaheira, Viconia, Edwina and Jan.

Chieftain Digdag has shrugged off the two Melfs we supplied at the main entrance, so we try something else.
Posted Image

Tazok is scared, good job as he was tearing into me. Viconia dooms him as Edwina and Jan Melf him. DUHM and/or the sword of chaos are slowly healing me.
Posted Image

Chieftain Digdag next.
Posted Image

Firkraag delegates his dirty work to Conster. Jan stuns the mage with a bruiser mate and we cut though his defences. Our reputation is restored and we head back to the city where Jan has a family crisis. It's tedious getting him back 10 minutes walking with nothing of interest.

Xzar is assassinated before our eyes, then Jaheira returns to the Harper hold. A mage called Degardan is also after Edwin. We agree to help Cernd, until Jaheira arrives and drags me back to the docks. At night ready for vampires now, or are we.
Posted Image

Viconia restores Jan and we head into the Harper hold in a weakened state. Not that it really matters. Or does it.
Posted Image

Nadinal manages a single magic missile through the insect plague and almost kills Jan. We kill him, only for Degardan to turn up and stun me. Iko re-appears and two dispels fail to affect me or Degardan.
Posted Image

We quickly Melf, doom and command Iko and then kill both remaining threats.
Posted Image

The druid grove has lots of trolls so I switch to the stonefire axe and a shield. We buff before entering a troll mound, and safely slice our way through the first three normal, spectral and spirit trolls with ease. We take the rest in one go, using greater malison, insect plague, slow and emotion.
Posted Image

Edwin and Jan add a fireball, Melfs and a flame arrow but the last troll is soaking it all up. Eventually my axe does the job.

The silent druids can do nothing about our insect plague. Emotion and hold monster make it worse.
Posted Image

Our usual buffs take us into the next battle. In my haste I land four hits 3 APR and kill Ihtafeer.
Posted Image

The other two are quickly overwhelmed.
Posted Image

Viconia casts chaotic commands on me and two spore colonies are eliminated. Then a few more druids Viconia seems to like the strong, silent type. Yet again she shuts me up.
Posted Image

Jaheira fighter 9 druid 12 casts doom, insect plague immediate spell disruption, summon woodland being and ironskins as the nymph makes her impact.
Posted Image

Oh dear Faldorn.

Jaheira adds three insect summons but the fire elemental kills Faldorn.

Makes sense.

The biggest change that SCS made was making them real duplicates- including the party's items. The also get "smarter" scripts of course

How well they fight depends on whether the scripts can make use of the character's abilities though. For example, when my melee sorceress, Alastria, faced her clone, the script couldn't really make use of her peculiar Polymorph centric spellbook. The Clone ended up casting Spook and tossing Meteors for lack of anything better to do.

If you have a Thief with Invisibility Potions or a party full of convenionally equipped characters watch out though...

Anyhoo. Lessons learned right? Your next run will be all the more likely to suceed now. :)

Cheers,

A.

I think I've read somewhere that it is just random.  It does indeed vary in my games, although typically I find it triggers in the first couple of transitions outside the slums.

I did consider it, but didn't follow it up.  Part of my problem with BG2 relates to its different nature - my gaming strength is in positional play rather than using / defending against spells and that's obviously better suited to BG1.  However, I also have a different approach to it; I'm happy in BG1 to miss out large chunks of the game, but tend to find myself drifting into wanting to complete everything in BG2 (which is a problem when most enemies have some sort of chance to kill you).  I suspect that's at least partly a consequence of never having finished BG2 - so think I probably need to get on and do thatPosted Image.  I'll probably come back and give the wizard slayer another chance, with a properly planned campaign, after that.

By the way it did occur to me that using the horn of Kazgoroth might help in some of the early encounters - for instance it would protect against a clerical hold person (though not rigid thinking or mental domination).

Alessandra v. Kaol and the Gang (Or The Desperation Disco)

Alessandra narrowly defeated Samia's crew (AKA Kaol and the Gang) in what turned out to be a nasty, dirty brawl. Aside from being outnumbered and outgunned, Alessandra's biggest problem here was her total lack of Potions of Extra Healing. She had to take the gloves off (and be a bit clever) to stay alive.

The fight started well enough. Simmy Alessandra layed a nice dose of casting failure on Kaol while Alessandra sent Darts of Stunning around the room. Kaol was shut down, and the biggest melee threats were immobilized.
Posted Image

Unfortunately, Alessandra neglected to attend to the Cleric. And once his Remove Paralysis flew, she knew she had made a big mistake. Simmy Alessandra fell.
Posted Image

It was time to exercise the better part of valor...

I haven't the slightest idea how to cover the next part of the fight. It was a mad scramble. Stun that fighter, dispel that Potion, disrupt that spell all while seeking one objective: a way out.

Kaol narrowed Alessandra's options when he blocked the exit path with a Web. Alessandra was forced to stand and fight. She had only a few hitpoints left, and Samia was closing in running a Potion of Magic Shielding and an Oil of Speed amongst other Potions.

Ages could Slow Samia of course, but with it's poor attack Speed Factor, Alessandra would be dead before the effect kicked in. She got just enough room to execute her solution: an Arrow of Dispelling followed by a quick jab with the Sword of Arvoreen.
Posted Image
Posted Image

That gave her some breathing room, but not much. I thought Alessandra's run was over here.

Oh how I wish I could drink a Potion of Absorption now...
Posted Image

Happily, Alessandra gulped a Potion of Healing just in time and had barely enough hitpoints remaining to survive. The exit was still blocked though.

Alessandra activated her Arbane Sword Haste and made a break for shelter. She found it in the Tomb. She drank her healing potions, drew up a plan, and went to work.
Posted Image

Alessandra positioned herself right in front of the door to minimize her foes numerical superiority. She ignored the Cleric at her feet, and instead sent Darts of Stunning at Akae and Samia. Once they were Stunned -and blocking the door- she knocked off the Cleric and then mowed down Samia and Akae with ranged weapons.
Posted Image
Posted Image

The lovely thing about Stunning those dregs was that they dropped much needed Potions of Extra Healing. Potions never tasted so good...

3 Left. Kaol was futzed and then chunked.
Posted Image
Posted Image

The last two clowns were Stunned and then popped.
Posted Image

Phew!

That was a pretty rough fight for Alessandra. I'm glad she made it. Alessandra's next stop? A shop where she can buy Potions of Extra Healing of course...

Best,

A.

Indeed. It didn't help that my potion case was filled to the brim, meaning my characters were all lobbing around up to 20 potions, with a minimum of 5 pots of extra healing... but really, my only real (tactical, as opposed to metagaming) mistake was underestimating the AI of the clones. I wish I could learn to be more cautious and less impulsive in my decisions, but I guess I'm just too much of a textbook Chaotic Neutral person in real life, and it tends to bleed into the game.

But yeah, I think I have at least one more Swash/Mage run left in me, once I gather the broken remnants of my pride and self-esteem off the floor. Now where did I leave that superglue...

I am entering the challenge with Avorunis, chaotic evil human cleric, who just defeated Sarevok in solo run on maximum difficulty.

Stats after import: Level 8; 64HP; STR19; DEX19; CON16; INT6; WIS21; CHA4
Proficiencies: Flail, Warhammer, Sling, Sword and shield style

Since Avorunis performed valuable services for Talos in recent past (such as protecting Talosian fishermen and destroying priesthood of Umberlee in Baldur’s Gate), Talos accepted him among his priests:

Posted Image

I will play on insane difficulty, vanilla SoA+ToB with the latest patch installed.
Avorunis accompanied by Imoen cleared Irenicus prison, freed Minsc and Jaheira and escaped to surface. He is currently Priest of Talos level 9, with 69HP.
