I almost asked if your character was a kensai, tried a few through BG but usually died quite early. May run one next before getting back on the cavalier trail.

Kensai Alessandra is doing well for herself so far. I miss Missle Weapons and Shields, but I expected the Armor restriction to be more-or-less irrelevant and it has been.
As a Kensai, you can strike quicker than your melee opponents. With 2 Handed Weapons, you can also strike from further away. There isn't really any reason why you should be hit with a melee weapon often. And when you do encounter an unusual melee foe that can hit you, that's when you use your Potions of Defense. Shield Amulet, Mirror Image, Improved Invisibility and -crucially- movement, is more than adequate in most cases.
As for range weapons, you can always go Boots of Avoidance, Cloak of Displacement, Claw of the Kazgaroth. That works fine against typical range threats.
It's the exceptional ranged enemies (as well as Flame Arrowx3 Triggers) that scare me since she can't use the Reflection Shield. Baring foolishness on my part, she'll likely survive until one of those threats gets her. We'll see how long that takes...
Best,
A.

When they ambushed Alessandra, she disappeared and summoned Ras. She hung around for a bit just to tally up their potion bill...
By the time Ras unsummoned, they had burned about 3500 gold in potions- and that's assuming they are unusually reputable and charismatic muggers.
How is spending 3500 gold to mug a sword a viable business model?

What makes you think they spent anything? With the number of adventurers constantly trudging through Athkatla they only need an occasional lucky haul from a well-stocked potion bag to keep them goingAlesia_BH wrote...

Since so much of Athkatla's wealth is portable, mugging is probably a bit like venture capital in that town. You may sink significant money value in failed operations often, but as long as you score a loaded Bag of Holding once in a while, it's all good.
Btw. Here's my favorite Lilarcor moment from Kensai Alessandra's run...

To maximize XP gain in the early parts of the game, Avorunis completed various sidequests solo – including Circus tent quest, finding kidnapers who burried Tirdir, obtaining illithium/alloy for Sir Sarles, investigation of Harper’s Hold for Xzar, saving Viconia and some more.
Because my knowledge of SoA is somewhat rusty and even small mistake may be fatal at maximum difficulty, Avorunis recruited Jan Jansen for some quests (such as mimic blood quest or exploration of sewers beneath Copper Coronet), as abilities of Illusionist/Thief complement very well those of Cleric.
Currently, I am considering whether to recruit Korgan or not.
Avorunis: Priest of Talos L12, 75HP
Jan Jansen: Illusionist/Thief L10/11, 48HP

I haven't provided any significant coverage of Alessandra's run so far. In the interest of catching up, I'll provide a concise overview of her earlier adventures here. I then cover Bodhi's Lair and Windspear Hills in subsequent posts.
Kensai Alessandra's early route was slightly different from Wizard Slayer Alessandra's. Kensai Alessandra used the Promenade Potion of Freedom to acquire Lilarcor. Lilarcor was in turn helpful in acquiring Arbane.

Arbane led to Ilbratha.

Ilbratha helped in acquiring Arvoreen.

With Slow, Charm, and Confusion immunity in hand, Alessandra secured her Stronghold.

At present she has completed Copper Coronet, Umar Hills, Trademeet, De'Arnise Keep, and Bodhi's Lair. She is currently in the Windspear Hills. Her racial abilities have proven helpful in the early segments of the game by simplifying disabler defense. Her saves cover most threats.

For Symbol Stun and it's -4 penalty (something potentially dangerous when the Ring of Air Control or potions buffs aren't active) there is the Sword of Arvoreen.

A recent shot of Alessandra's inventory. This was taken in Bodhi's Lair.

I'll post on the Lair and Hills soon.
Best,
A.

Hm, it's expensive, but have you thought of investing in Joril's Dagger? I know you like to experiment with little-used weapons, and this is one of the few early range 2 weapons with elemental damage and disabling on hit.

After returning from the De'Arnise Keep he soon came across more vampires - Tanova and 2 vampire support troops became the Edge's latest victims in the Bridge District, though Tanova did manage an initial backstab, which caused a long-lasting constitution drain. That encounter gave level 14.
A couple of sundry bits and pieces followed (persuaded a paladin to adopt a daughter and collected a ransom for someone else's kidnap victim). In addition he was ambushed by a well prepared party with 2 fairly high level mages - brought out the simmy for the only time in this session and Kitthix, in his only outing to date, performed well by webbing one of them. Then decided to rid the city of those pesky vampires for good - failed to save Mook, killed a couple of would-be traitors to the thieves guild and then invaded the vampire guild.
Again the vampires were made much easier by Azuredge (although Bodhi herself was not affected by its destroy undead ability and Ergot used up a potion of invulnerability in beating her up). He also got level drained twice by backstabbing vampires (rage protects against level drain, but doesn't last long enough to keep up constantly. Ergot fished the mace of disruption out of a bloody pool - though he had to kill a rat swimming in it first. He also got up to level 15 here.
I've tended to play neutral characters recently to avoid being Blighted, but Azuredge is a major incentive to go good

At trademeet Ergot had just done a fairly fully buffed combat to dispose of the rakshasas and had moved on to confront the druids outside the grove. Using no buffing at all he took significant damage - especially from the call lightnings - and had already used a couple of extra-healing potions. However, the last of the opposition were disposed of with about 35 HPs left and I decided that he would go for a rest rather than use up more healing potions prior to taking on Faldorn. This decision was taken on the presumption that the call lightnings had finished. On his way to find shelter he suddenly keeled over dead - I didn't see what killed him, but I imagine my presumption was incorrect

Sorry to hear that Grond0. What's funny, or sad, depending on how you look at it, is as a thief you could stealth through this whole area, and not do a single fight and you could complete this quest and just fight the trash later.

Veene had just beat BG 1 no-reload. Here are his stats. Note that this screenshot does include Chateau Irenicus, Circus, several ambushes, and Korgan's quest experience.

We got through Chateau Irencus without much trouble. I did learn something this run through, however, which I was surprised at. When trying to get to the Djinn there's that pesky group of mephits on a platform. They've given me trouble in the past (read: party deaths), mainly because of the stun that one of them does. However, as I was about to approach them I checked through my spells to see if anything would be of any real help - I then considered Imoen's Minor Globe of Invulnerability. I thought to myself, what if that stun is considered a 3rd level spell or lower? Imoen can just walk right up, draw the stun, fire a fireball and come back to the party. It should be just mop up then. And sure enough it worked perfectly she did not get stunned. Think I will use this technique from now on, it's perfectly safe.
After we got out of Irenicus' dungeon, we then dealt with a circus problem. Had to use some heal potions but pretty unremarkable. Veene took some hits, but his vampiric touch x2 came quite handy here.
Next up we recruited Viconia (after rescuing her - piece of cake with call lightning) and Korgan. I know you will run out of time on Korgan's quest, so did that immediately. My party found this quest extremely difficult. We enter the crypts from the east side of the graveyard, and that first group of spiders put a huge beat down on the party. Multiple party members were getting poisoned and I had very few antidotes of any kind and the divine casters have very few slow poisons memorized (which I fixed after surviving the fight - barely). Keep in the mind this is basically on the 2nd quest we are doing. Minsc had 0 AC and Korgan had 1 AC at this point. We used HUGE number of heal potions this fight, but there was no choice, as we couldn't cure all the poisons that happened. If it weren't for Korgan's enrage and the vampiric touch of Veene, someone would have died.
We rested and pushed forward. The next group of spiders went a bit smoother, now that the divine casters have slow poisons memorized. Oh forgot to mention, the party is Minsc/Korgan/Veene (PC)/Jaheira/Viconia. It's going to stay this group for a while, and will only change if we are ready to recruit Edwin, or if Veene is ready to dual to a cleric he will recruit Yoshimo for thief duties, to be replaced by Imoen when we get her.
The first group of undead in that room with the trapped face on the floor was painful, but we did it. Veene got charmed so we just had to wait it out. After killing the vampire noticed I had a close call - Jaheira was level 1! One more level drain and she would have been chunked.
Oh forgot to mention Viconia doesn't have a magical melee weapon nor magical ammo, so she can't damage things at all. Her turn undead made the undead run, so that wasnt much help as that just brought more enemies into the mix. MULTIPLE times Veene got to like 20% health (or worse) - I said enough was enough I don't need any more close calls and switched him to ranged, to stay out of trouble. He's just wearing studded leather.
We then killed that skeletal warrior in the sarcophagus and crept forward. Some ghasts and mummies attacked -- this was a disaster, we used ton of heal potions, Minsc and Jaheira got held (and killed by the mummy poison), the remaining party members beat up. Here's the aftermath. (Jaheira died a few seconds after this screenshot from the mummy poison)I must have used like used a 1/2 hour trying to loot everything, using well known inventory tricks like equipping rings and necklaces to make the most of the inventory. Was difficult, but managed to loot EVERYTHING -- Minsc and Jaheira's equipment and what loot they had. Had ZERO space left.
Time to head out and get our party members resurrected. Viconia didn't even have a raise dead memorized. I fixed that, but need to rest first so she can get us back up to speed. Difficulties weren't done yet -- of course, with the party spent of most of their spells, hurt and not full strength and with no room, the Suna Sunei ambush triggered. We did win, but only because of Veene's Bhaal horror power. I of course had to drop a lot of stuff to loot the important loot here, stuff like studded leathers, non-magical axes, etc. This took about 1/2 hour as well to do the shuffling. Good thing Veene has 19 STR...
But no, the inventory troubles are not yet over. We finally get to the Waukeen's Promenade and the first vampire ambush triggers! With Korgan with a sliver of life, no rages, and no heals available, certainly did not interfere here. But lots of scrolls/gems dropped off the theives. This was getting a bit ridiculous. I don't want to drop anything. Time to be inventive. I entered on the north side of WP, and noticed a crate that wasnt' by the store or anything - I promptly had Korgan dump everything he was carrying into it. Korgan then looted the gems/scrolls.
We finally got an inn and resurrected the fallen. The party had a few slight ugprades. We bought a cheap mace for Viconia so she would have a melee weapon and magical (it was +1). On our return, the remaining undead were killed MUCH smoother this time. The magical arrows that Veene got from the Suna Sunei ambush helped somewhat.
We then went to Philicos after we found someone else got to the tomb first, then Korgan said his buddies were probably on the copper coronet roof. We went, had lots of help this time (a skeleton and two nymphs). Was a clean win and Korgan's quest is OVER! Yay!
With the loot we bought Korgan a +2 medium shield which puts his AC at -2. Not great but a start. Got Minsc a +1 ring and now he is -1 AC. Also not great but something to work with.
Here's hoping our future operations get a bit smoother.

Call Lightning is one of those threats that demands a defense. The Boots of Grounding are over at the Temple of Lathander in case you are interested. Boots of Grounding
Alessandra is actually clearing out the Grove now. She's at Level 18. I still don't intend to send her up against the Druids. She'll fight them when she has the Cloak of Reflection (she could do it now with The Boots of Grounding and a Potion of Insulation, but it will be more fun when she has the Cloak).
Do you intend to complete Ergot's game as planned?
@Amanasleep- I have considered Joril's Dagger. It's so far down on the priority list though that she may never buy it. Her last big ticket item was Everard's Morning Star. The Defender will be her next major purchase. I'm not seeing a lot of Gold leftover for Joril's Dagger, sadly.
Were Alessandra Chaotic Good, I'd consider picking up Jan for a day and letting him go on a crime spree, but that isn't my girl's style. She'll probably just have to do without Joril.

Alessandra is in danger of rushing ahead of her updates again so I'll quickly cover Windspear Hills. It was a smooth run. Firkraag was left for another day.
The opening ambush in the Cabin is trivial, but it seems worth covering since it illustrates Alessandra's basic party tactics.
She opened with Ring of Air Control Improved Invisibility, and then buffed with Shield and Mirror Image (DUHM was cast earlier). She broke invisibility with Namarra's Silence, and then cut the mage in half. The remaining foes were then dispatched in turn.

The first non-trivial foes in the palace were the Golems. She took her standard buffs for insurance, and then spanked them from outside their melee range.

Alessandra entered the undead room under Invisibility. She took one look, saw a crew of Ancient Vampires and said "Temple of Ilmater, you have just sold yourself a Protection from Undead scroll!" (Sorry, folks level drain gives me the willies...)

Kensai Alessandra was not taken in by Samia's rouse. This had the benefit of putting her on sounder tactical footing when combat began.
Akae and Samia were running Oils of Speed. Alessandra used this to her advantage by darting away and letting their speed separate them from their support casters. They never got to see their friends again. Kaol was dunked later with the assistance of Mr. Efreeti.

Against the Greater Wolfweres, Alessandra dual wielded Ages and Frostreaver. Regeneration provides a big incentive to eschew smack-n-go in favor of toe-to-toe damage per round combat. Alessandra has no points in dual wielding, but she doesn't need them. Dual Wielding points are about THACO and her Kensai bonuses let her hit as accurately with the offhand as a 3 pip Fighter.

Tazok got it next.

Then Conster. This was a fun battle.
Conster's buffs fired off, he took ProMW. Alessandra activated her Air Control Ring and then took a few renewable buffs with the understanding that they would elicit a Remove Magic cast and be dispelled.

Conster used his Remove Magics, Alessandra was free to take her Potion buffs now. Conster went Malison, Alessandra countered with a Potion of Stone Form.

Conster went Flame Arrow, Alessandra countered with Potion of Fire Resistance->Potion of Extra Healing.

Conster: Symbol Stun, Alessandra: Equips Sword of Arvoreen.

Frustrated, Conster disappeared. Alessandra activated her Ring of Invisibility, and used the time to buff. When Conster returned (now out of Abjuration school weapon defenses) Alessandra went to work on his Stoneskins with the Flail of Ages and Everard's Morning Star. Ages disrupted his current casts while Everard stole his future casts (50% chance, No Save, works through Stoneskins, subtracts spells from the highest level and works down the book). There was little Conster could do at this point- aside from die that is...

Fin!
Best,
A.

No arcane users in the group, so group haste is out. I did have 2 potions, don't think one would have been help enough, probably would have to use 2 of them. Hmm as for NPP, well I did have 6 level 4 spell slots counting Jaheira and Viconia but Viconia needed some of them for level drains. It only lasts 5 rounds though, it was taking us a while to kill the enemies since Viconia couldn't damage them. Who knows might have been enough...

Alessandra cleaned up the Sewers a little while ago. I'll cover the Draug Fea fight since it illustrates both her strengths and weaknesses.
Before reaching the surly ones, Alessandra had to take care of that meddlesome Beholder. She equipped the Belt of Inertial Barrier and the Boots of Grounding to mitigate the damage stalk risk. Her saves covered the others, but she kept Arvoreen, Lilarcor and Draonslayer in her quickslots just in case something funky happened. She fought from a distance to widen the response window. That worked out fine.

Onto the dwarves. Alessandra approached and declined their offer. Their buffs fired, and she activated her Ring of Air Control.

She took her renewable buffs, and then hung out to see what was on tap tonight.

Next, she fell back and focused on taking out the Dwarves. With two on the field, it was best to go ranged. They'd get a smack with Lilarcor if they got too close.

In these party fights, it always seems to be the Aerial Servants that do the damage. in general, Alessandra is vulnerable to attacks out of Invisibility- that is one of her weaknesses.

Her biggest problem at this stage is her lack of a non-aura based counter to Flame Arrows. She can soften the damage with her Ring of Fire Resistance, but beyond that, she needs to use Potions. That is a problem because it means she can be vulnerable if she is forced to use a spell equivalent action to counter another threat as below.
Zorl went Doom, Alessandra countered with a Potion of Stone Form.
When her Aura was clouded, Gaius fired his Flame Arrow Trigger. If she could use the Reflection Shield, this could have been shut down entirely. But since she can't it's a problem.

Then, some good teamwork: Gaius's Efreeti popped out of Invisibility and hit Alessandra with a Flame Strike. Since Djinni's cast instantly in my install, there was no counter window here and she had already swapped rings when this hit her. Touche...

As quick as that, she goes from cruising to Badly Wounded. Oh how I miss the Reflection Shield. If she could use that item I would be much, much more optomistic about her chances of success.
Since she was seriously wounded and had already drained the Divination stuff, Alessandra activated her Ring of Invisibility. She used the time to heal and buff. She broke Invisibility, and then gave Gallchobhair a fine how-do-you-do.

Most mages only make progress with their Arrow stuff (FA and MAA) against Alessandra. Gaius sometimes keeps Maze in his book though so that made him scary. Staying ranged solves the problem, but the danger preoccupied Alessandra nonetheless. Here he started casting something Conjuration and was a little to close for comfort. Alessandra disrupted with a Potion of Invisibility just to be safe.

She finished Gaius shortly after that. She chewed through his Skins at range. When he ran low, he cast Invisibility. Alessandra revealed him with Dragonslayer's Detect Invisibility, and then finished him.

The end.
Fairly smooth fight, but I really miss that shield...
Best,
A.

Alesia, did you attack Conster with unenchanted throwing axes while he was under PfMW?
Yeah. A few times. He did actually skip PrNM for some reason.
Alessandra tends to just wait out ProMW invisible though.
As you noted, the SCS mages are often running PrNM. And it really doesn't make sense to get up in their grill (and therefore incur Maze risk) just to take out a few Skins with an unenchanted sword.
I've never used E's Morning Star before. Didn't know it subtracted highest level first. I'll remember that for my BH->Cleric run.
I tested it on one of my characters. It works from the top of the book down which does make it quite nice. Alena used it a lot in her Improved Anvil run. I haven't used it with other characters since simply because no one could really make effective use of it.
Alessandra isn't especially well positioned to use it due to her lack of Maze defense, but it may come in handy from time to time.
I'd probably use it alot with a Barbarian, Berseker, or F/M type.

He did have potions available, but was consciously taking a bit of a risk. That was partly because I was a bit bored with him - hence I have started another BG1 challenge to do something different. I had intended to come back and complete his game, but while reading your post realised that I had neglected to take a final save for him - so the only save I have of him is starting out in Candlekeep! I suppose I could replicate his position reasonably accurately with Shadowkeeper, but I'm not sure I will - I'll see how I feel after finishing my BG1 run.Alesia_BH wrote...
