If it really is that easy to un-install them, perhaps I should try installing them, just to say I have actually tried them and still prefer vanilla after doing so.

How open minded of You. good sir.

Btw. Does anyone here do the Planar Prison Quest early in SCS? I'd like to know if and when it is possible to avoid the triple Yuan-Ti Mage spawn. I don't have always toughest dungeon spawns installed, just the increased difficulty one.

If you play with "slightly increased difficulty" they'll spawn when your PC has 1,000,000 XP, if "significantly increased difficulty" they'll spawn at 400,000 XP.

Even though we can't get the reward, think we will do the Unseeing Eye quest next (if we can).

Did you talk to the stormherald? Evil priests get their quest from the temple of Talos rather than Helm.

Yes, as I said in my original post about this issue, no one at any temple will give me the quest -- they either won't talk to me at all (Helm), or they say they have nothing for me right now (Talos). When I first arrived in the temple area I was approached by Helm.

And thanks all for the congrats on taking down the dragons -- felt like my party is headed in the right direction if we can do that.

EDIT: Looks like I won't be doing the Unseeing Eye quest  at all. Good thing nothing required here to beat the game.

For the record, I interpreted Corey's comment to mean: "What I really care about now is my party, my game, and my challenge. Let the mod thing rest, and support me in my run because that's what matters to me."

I think that is eminently reasonable, and I'm sure we're all willing to oblige.

Good hunting Corey!

 Quick Note on Ashoka's Game:

Despite doing a lousy job of packing, Ashoka has defeated the Warden and rescued the friendly neighborhood Doomguard.

This quest was a bit dicey for Ashoka simply due to my inexperience with the SCS version. The good news is that I now know how to solo the prison early without risk. That's a good thing.

I'll post more on the Prison fairly soon.

Unfortunately,
Avorunis died when trying to complete Cernd’s personal quest. Party previously completed de’Arnise Keep quest, Umar Hills quest and Druid Grove quest. I became too complacent and challenged Deril and his companions to fight. They were in Near Death status, but one of them managed to cast Abi Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, instantly killing Avorunis :crying:
Ah well, back to BG1 I guess.

@V- Sorry to hear that. I guess doubling your damage doesn't double you fun. Or maybe it does. It definitely doesn't double your life expectancy though...

Regardless of his end, Avorunis's BG1 run was really something. Good luck in your next run.

Btw. I wish the difficulty slider controlled spawn difficulty and stuff like that rather than just damage.

@Corey- It's a bummer that you can't do the Unseeing Eye Quest. If it strikes you as a bug, there is likely a console solution. Someone versed in the ways of quest variables may be able to assist with that if you are interested

 Quick Note on Ashoka's Game:

I just had Ashoka knock off Draug Fea and his cronies. It was fun. She got some nice backstabs in for a girl with a x3 modifier.

Since Ashoka is my first Stalker and I've never done a F/T, I've haven't had access to Staff of Striking + Boots of Speed, + Reflection Shield this early in SoA before. It's insanely great of course. You can backstab from the edge of melee range, dart away, and equip the Reflection Shield while you are heading back to the Shadows. There are few SoA physical weapon wielders who can threaten you.

Best,

A.

 Ashoka in the Planar Prison

I had composed a detailed post on the Planar Prison earlier but lost it somehow. I'll cover it quickly here so her updates don't fall behind.

Ashoka buffed up and then blitzed through the Prison- racing against the duration of her potion buffs.

The Mage got it first.
Posted Image

But while he wasn't at the top of the hit list, Stumpy the Pixie ****** wielder was the biggest threat. Boots of Speed + Oil of Speed + Strength Potion + Pixie ****** + Potions of Invisiblity is pretty nasty when you are solo and have lousy saves. A Potion of Invulnerability covered the Sleep threat. A Potion of Firebreath and a thwack fixed him.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Ashoka charged into the next few fights with Mr. Efreeti at her side. His Fireballs coupled with Ashoka's Oils of Fiery Burning softened enemies up before the melee combat began.
Posted Image

When the Umber Hulks closed, it was Potion of Absorption time. This rendered them harmless as the rolls show.
Posted Image

After bumping off some Thralls, it was time for The Master. Ashoka gulped a Potion of Freedom en route, and started him off with a nice Critical.
Posted Image

An unwelcome guest spoiled the fun by forcing Ashoka to stow her staff and equip Harmony.
Posted Image

NW: Had Ashoka not been rushing, she would have nixed this mage before engaging the Master of Thralls. A Remove Magic could have been problematic here. This was a major, major mistep. In addition to icing the mage first, Ashoka should have brought a backup Potion of Freedom. Filed away for future runs.

Despite the mage, Ashoka finished off the Master in a timely fashion. She then tied up her loose ends before charging the Warden.
Posted Image

Ashoka approached the Warden bravely, but when she saw his Chain Contingency fire she thought. "Huh? Should I really be tangling with an F/M who's casting Level 9s when I'm a Level 9 Ranger?"

Whose to say. But the Warden had more pressing questions: "Huh? Should I really have left Boots of Speed, Potions of Invisibility,  and Arrows of Ice on my lackeys? And should I have left those Arrows of Biting in the hidey-hole? Are those not the perfect things to foil my spells and kill me?"

His last words were "Yeah. That was dumb wasn't it..."
Posted Image

NW: The Warden is a ready made kill for a bow wielder, but Ashoka should have had a Potion of Magic Shielding available to her here. Again, filed away for next time.

Anyhoo. I'll post on Umar and De'Arnise if they end up being eventful. Barring that, Ashoka's next update will be on Windspear.

Best,

A.

I don't think it's a bug, I think it's by design. Actually the slider DOES control the spawns, to an extent. I happen to know the fish room in the planar sphere AND the halfling mages/warriors in the planar sphere that have the strength guantlets, they dont appear if you are playing easy.

Yeah. The Core-Insane distinction is largely about damage though. It would be nice if difficulty were enhanced in more tactically interesting ways through that range. It's one of those things that is technically possible but not economically feasible in a commerical game development cycle.

Quick Note on Ashoka's Game:

Ashoka took care of Mecnar and his buds while her buffs from the Sewers fight were still active. The Boots of Speed made that possible.

Doing the Planar Prison early definitely seems like the way to go for a Backstabber/Bow Wielder.

I honestly think the only reason I haven't been doing it early is that I still have this awful memory of my first character (a Skald) getting killed there over and over again. That was many years ago -and I literally had no idea what I was doing at that time- but the memory remains powerful. Funny how suff like that works.

Anyhoo. I think the plan at this point is to swing by the Keep, nix Torgal, and then use the loot to buy Ras. Ras, in turn, will make Mae'Var safe. Umar and Windspear can come after that. Not sure yet though.

Best,

A.

Ashoka at the De'Arnise Keep

Ashoka just cleared the keep. She is now in Trademeet where she intends to pick up a new sword and then visit that lovely potion seller in the Druid Grove.

Aside from the epic battle with Rex, Rover, Sparky and Spot, the first meaningful encouner here was with the Yuan Ti Mage. Ashoka tried to one hit nix him, but whiffed. His buffs fired. She grabbed the key and just left figuring she could pay him a visit later. That's sort of how it worked out.

Anyhoo: the Golems. The Flesh and Stone Golems were dispatched with Belm using Shadows. The Clay Golem with the Staff of Air. The Iron Golem required some buffing.

For the Gas Cloud (which is pretty nasty in my install) she used a Pro Poison Scroll. If she had a +3 ranged weapon, that's all she would have needed. Sadly, her only +3 was Frostreaver so she had to go toe-to-toe. Not a tragedy since all the buffs would come in handy later on. A Potion of Mind Focusing, a Potion of Defense, and a Potion of Absorption brought her Crushing AC down to -21. The Golem wan't entirely harmless (he was hitting on 19) but damage was easily manageable.

On the offensive end, she took a Frost Giant Strength Potion with the understanding that it would last through the rest of the Quest.
Posted Image

The Umber Hulks were next. The were kindly fed, and then ruthlessly killed. Ashoka's Crushing AC was still at -21 here. Harmony handled the Confusion threat of course.
Posted Image

Time to play whack-a-troll. Ashoka layered in an Oil of Speed -checked that her Girdle of Piercing was secure- and hit the Shadows. Then...well...she whacked a troll...

Posted Image

With the Boots of Speed + Oil of Speed Torgal couldn't pivot fast enough to foil Ashoka's backstab. It just happened to be a critical. Little left to do after that. The Giant Trolls couldn't hit her at -14, they were ended quick.

So that's the end. Ashoka was relieved to be finished and made her way to the palisade. But to her surprise, she ran into an old friend...

Posted Image

I didn't expect to see him here- it kind of threw my loops. He wasn't a problem though. Acid Arrows foiled most his spells while removing his Stoneskins. He got off a pair of Flame Arrows but they were both caught by the Reflection Shield.
Posted Image

The end. :)

Best,

A.

Veene the Level 12 thief > Level 12 cleric (yay one more level to activate thief abilities) - Linvail owned

Despite having 6 party members, space for looting has been quite a problem so far. So we took some steps to fix that:
1) We went to watcher's keep with the intent of getting the potion bag. We were beat up at this point so rested, and lo and behold who do we see but Dermien, Jaheira's old friend. Jaheira did call lightning, rest of the party did a lot of summons, and victory was assured. The Helmites even got involved on our side. Since we are beat up again, we rested and now who do we see? Edwin's old pal, a red wizard. This red wizard dispels Edwin's "condition", then we had to fight him. For being a solo NPC, that red wizrad did some good damage, including doing a good whack on Veene (if Veene weren't wearing the belt of inertial barrier which reduces magic damage, he might have even been killed). Viconia wasted no time and uses a RoR charge to get Veene up to speed and Veene gets some distance. The party does eventually win and we rest once more. We sell our loot and buy the potion bag.
2) Yoshimo is using the Tuigan - but he can't loot anything so we went into Watcher's Keep and obtained the ammo belt. We will save the statues for later, they are a lot easier with HLAs.

We reported our earlier success to Bodhi, and she says it's time to deal with Aran Linvail. I didn't remember this part very well, been a long time since I battled the thieves. However, the party handled it well, it's definitely more time consuming to deal with Aran than the vampires. Was also nice that we got the +2 ring of protection and amulet of power, and a djinni ring. We did maximum buffs, breached Linvail and then he and his cronies were history.

Before we report our success to Bodhi, we sold our junk at the Adventure Mart and paid a visit to Mencar Pebblecrusher. He had like a zero chance of survival because: 1) Yoshimo laid down 5 traps - 3 in particular were designed to catch Brennan Risling if he attempts to escape 2) 5 pretty powerful summons - a large bear, ariel servant, fire elemental (druidic), 2 mutatated carrion crawlers 3) Insect Plague by Jaheira. The party just assisted the summons and victory was achieved.

Before talking with Bodhi, we obtained 26 intelligence potions - we want to deal with the mind flayers, the experience will be helpful. We reported our success and was sent to Brynnlaw.

Party Status:
Jaheira - level 10 fighter/level 12 druid, 81 HP
Korgan - level 14 berserker, 129 HP
Veene - level 12 thief (inactive) > level 12 cleric, 68 HP
Viconia - level  14 cleric, 58 HP
Yoshimo - level 15 bounty hunter, 86 HP
Edwin - level 13 conjurer, 58 HP

I can't say I really understand Stalker management yet, but it seems clear that Ashoka needs to take a more deliberate and measured approach to tactical tool kit building. She also has to be careful not to bottom out.

Put simply, managing a Stalker is like living on a budget. Managing a Bounty Hunter is like living off a trust fund untill you are ready to collect retirement.

Yes, Stalkers require management.  However, this gets much easier after level 12 acquires you Haste and MSD.  These save you a ton on potions throughout the midgame.  My usual plan is to race to level 12, spawns be damned, but that's not prudent for a no reload.

There was an earlier suggestion about having to ask at a different temple, but if not;

CLUAConsole:MoveToArea("AR0202") will get you to Sassar. You would also need to CTRL/J jump through a locked door to get to the main area.

Thanks for this info but I don't believe my unable to access the Unseeing Eye quest is a bug. There are any number of reasons the Helmite boss doesn't want to give me the quest: 1) reputation (when I first talked to him our rep was 6 thanks to the Trademeet fiasco) 2) charisma (my CHA is 3) 3) not talking with him right away. I did talk to the Talos Temple equivalent but he says he has nothing for me to do.

 Ashoka in the Umar Hills

Ashoka just completed the Umar Hills quest. Doing it later meant the Bone Golem-Greater Mummy spawns but those are time consumming rather than dangerous. Nothing interesting happened in that phase.

As for the Shade Lord...

I really wish I had installed the Tougher Shade Lord for this run. The only reason I don't have it installed is because Alesia's prefered armor is in the Umar Hills and she can't get Level Drain protection and Azuredge untill late. Being a Ranger and all, Ashoka could have used a tussle here. As it was, she just over buffed and breezed through.

Her character record buffed up for the fight.
Posted Image

The Shade Lord got beaten down with the Staff of Striking.
Posted Image

Shade Patrick fell to Azuredge.
Posted Image

The Altar took a Sunstone Bullet.
Posted Image

Probably going to go with Mae'Var next.

Best,

A.

Edit: Fixed Thaxy.
Posted Image

After the Shade Lord fight, I was a little bummed when the lights went up and the buffs expired because I figured it made sense to take care of her then. I wasn't sure whether I wanted to rebuff or just wait untill later when it would be cheaper. I ultimately decided to do it (clearly...).

She basically used the same buffs as against the Shade Lord but with her Priest stuff layer in. She took a smack-n-go approach with the Staff of Striking attacking from the Shadows for the THACO boost. Thaxy was too slow to pose a threat.

An opening critical helped.

Irenicus in Hell

As reported a little while ago, Wierdo and her band completed SOA and the Hell Trials, culminating in two final SCSII + ascension battles with Irenicus.

First up, Irenicus tried surprising Wierdo by pulling all the Hell Trials opponents in to fight together against Wierdo (i.e. the [black?] dragon, Orb of Fear, Blackrazor and Sarevok (Wraith of Wrath), in addition to Irenicus himself).

Posted Image

This proved to me a massive battle spread right across the whole area. Firstly, Wierdo's group focused on the dragon (seemed to be the easiest).

Posted Image

Wierdo figured that the dragon would look better in blue, but it appears that the dragon just wasn't able to live with this change in style.

Posted Image

Next came the Orb of Fear, which fell to concerted efforts. However, Irenicus (who was hiding invisibly) managed to use the distraction to de-buff Wierdo. Oh no! Avert your eyes from the naked gnome, she's a lady!

Posted Image

The Sword of Greed (Blackrazor) was a difficult opponent as it drained stats and only magic damage seemed to work on it. Lots of Magic missiles were necessary.

Posted Image

However, Bruce managed to destroy Irenicus first. Yay! Go Bruce!

Posted Image

[I had to restart from autosave here as I went to bed and my PC auto-restarted thanks to Windoze XP auto-updating. You might note that Wierdo's avatar has reverted to the default gnome avatar.]

None of this was to stop Irenicus, as he came back with four demons (2 Galebrezu and 2 Baalor) and himself as a fully re-charged Slayer. Wow, this encounter is scary. Just have a look at the buffs the Irenicus/Slayer auto-buffs with before then encounter even begins! There are so many buffs that they overwhelm the game text window.

Posted Image

The very idea of a Slayer that can cast spells like Time Stop chills Wierdo to the bone. Therefore, she exercises the better part of valour: Runs, grabs her Staff of the Magi (invisibility) and casts PfMW. Just in time before the Slayer / Irenicus casts Time Stop, during which he manages to mow down two healthy devas and take chunks out of Mazzy and Starria. Luckily (!) for them, they had both employed Hardiness just beforehand.

Posted Image

Bruce was the exception, as he has immunity to Time Stop. However, he couldn't even hit the Slayer which has PfMW active. Therefore, Bruce concentrated on eliminating a Baalor and Galebrezu instead.

Posted Image

Finally, Irenicus / Slayer fell to a flurry of de-buffing spells and blows. It is impossible to say who scored the death hit, but Bruce certainly had some fun.

Posted Image

That was it for SOA! WooooooooT! Stay tuned for more updates soon regarding Illasera and Grominir (wimps by comparison).

The Tactics "Shattered One" battle can be very difficult the first time through. Ditto for the SCS Slayer fight. Excellent work!

Thanks! My alter-ego Wierdo replicates my first 'serious' AD&D character (from early 1980's) in name, race and class. Gnomes get a great choice of class (thief/illusionist). There are also the racial bonuses for thieving and against giants (which are going to be useful when Wierdo & Company take on the Fire Giants in the Marching Mountains, and at the siege camp).

SCSII really makes the game a challenge. I don't think Wierdo could do it in no-reload without a fairly chunky party behind her. In normal play (reload OK), perhaps.

Pre-buffing and re-setting contingencies, sequencers becomes a bit of a chore, taking up a lot of 'real' time. The party won't even go to a new map / area without:

- Stone/ironskins for Wierdo, Anni, Starria & Jaheira (cast night before)
- Meifs MM for Annakin (cast night before)
- Death Ward and Chaotic Commands for all (Jah. & Starria casting)
- Prot. Fire for all (Wierdo/Anni casting themselves, Bruce & Mazzy), Jaheira/Starria use items.
- Prot Magic Energy for Wierdo (casting), Anni (casting), Starria, Bruce
- Prot Acid for Wierdo, Anni
- Prot Lightning for all Anni (casting), Starria (casting) Bruce, Mazzy, Jaheira (casting) Wierdo (Harper Pin)
- Spirit Armor for Wierdo, Anni (casting)
- Remove Fear (anyone casting)
- Prot Petrification for Wierdo, Anni

All these buffs last a long time (most are 1 turn/level, which means ~20 turns), so it makes sense to apply them if possible. Under SCSII, I KNOW that the enemy mages will thanks to the pre-casting scripts! It is a risk-averse approach but hey, this is no-reload!

Using the SCSII 'Ease of Use AI' script helps. It allows you to cast buff spells quickly using automatic casting by pressing a key and aura cleansing in between.

Here is Wierdo's resistances after all of that buffing:

Posted Image

With all her other protections, it will be pretty hard for anything to hurt her without some serious magic like Irenicus' Magic Shatter or a Time Stop + other spells/attacks. Even so, much of that protection can be removed quickly with de-buffing spells (like Irenicus did to Wierdo earlier).

There aren't that many dangers aside from the "gotcha" of giving the Imnesvale kids the beer and swords.

Moon Dog is a wonderful companion, one of the best rewards for a Stronghold.

"The Summoners" - Veene and gang update - Brynnlaw, Spellhold, Fish City

In Brynnlaw, Veene helped Ginia (why not, he had nothing better to do). We also took down the local prostitue ring. We didn't really care about Galvena's business, but she killed our contact, so it seemed fitting she had to pay. Yoshimo laid down two bounty hunter traps, then we summoned a level 9 bersker (via horn) right by the wizard, while Yoshimo did a backstab and ran. That was all it took it to defeat her.

We got captured by Irenicus. Irenicus cast some spell and I had to fight Bhaal. I didn't have any offensive spells memorized, so wasn't sure how this was going to work. I cast vampiric drain (via Bhaal power), DUHM and just straight melee. Fortunately that was enough for victory.

We are finally re-united with Imoen. Her arcane help will be welcome. She needs to do thief duties as well, as least for a short while. Number of puzzles here, but Veene had no trouble. We had no trouble on the 2nd level either. At the very end of the 2nd level great news when we connected the horns to the statue -- Veene got to level 13! He now has his thief abilities! Changed a lot of equipment after that -- equipped "dark night" armor helps with hiding in shadows and AC 3 -- equipped staff of Rhynn (weapon that can backstab) -- equipped 2x rings of invisibilities for safety and for extra backstabs if needed -- equipped boots of stealth. In addition, Korgan leveled here and got 2 pips in dual wield - he finally will use two axes and he gets 4 attacks per round. Mages that don't have PfMW or Mantle up are pretty much going to get eaten up by him now.

We solve the "director's" riddles and escape the spellhold maze. We recruited the crazy mages and batlted Irenicus. Imoen used dispel arrows, Edwin magic missles, Jaheira plague of insects, Korgan his 2 axes, Veene a summon (he doesn't have much offensive spells), and Viconia flame strike. Irenicus did not last long at all, and retreated almost immediately after Wanev's time stop. Lots of assassins left, plus the clones. Veene ran to the far left side of the room, Viconia got her True Seeing going and Edwin fired a cloudkill via wand. After the cloudkill hit the party followed Veene to his location.

Yoshimo finally arrived. However, with no equipment other than some katanas, and dualed to a fighter, we weren't worried about him, though he got a nice hit on Jaheira. The assassins/clones were getting devastated by the plague of insects and cloudkill. Viconia hit level 15 her animate deads are skeletal warriors now, that's great.

We sided with Saemon, but our ship got capsized by Sahuagin. They have a rebel problem, we went ahead and helped him with that. Pretty straightfoward for the party. Veene did lots of backstabs as the situation allowed. On one backstab attempt he put up righteous magic which says all hits are maximum, and then did DUHM to put his strength to 25. The backstab was only 70 damage with the staff of Rhynn. Guess that will have to do...The rebel prince was no match for our party.

We rapelled with a rope down this deep passage and found ourselves in the Underdark. We got 5 summons up and running, hasted them, chaotic commands on Veene, and Veene scouted ahead and somehow waved the summons to attack 3 mind flayers while hidden. The summons took casualties, but they won without needing Veene's help.

Party Status:
Jaheira - level 11 fighter/level 13 druid, 78 HP, Impaler
Korgan - level 16 berserker, 137 HP, Frostreaver
Viconia - level 16 cleric, 67 HP, Arla's Dragonsbane
Veene - level 12 thief > level 14 cleric, 72 HP,  Staff of Rhynn/sling of seeking
Imoen - level 7 thief > level 12 mage, 68 HP, Tuigan's bow
Edwin - level 14 conjurer, 58 HP, Crimson Dart +3

Wierdo's Bhaalspawn Bretheren

Talking Heads

The Bretheren (levels approx):

Wierdo   Gnome Illusionist(18)/Thief(24)
Annakin  Human Berserker/Mage (12/24)
Bruce    Human Monk(35)
Starria  Half-Elf Ranger/Cleric (18/21)
Mazzy    Halfling Paladin(29)
Jaheira  Half-Elf Fighter/Druid (19/21)

Having received advice that the answers Wierdo seeks might be found from some talking stone heads in a forest, the party decided that was a good enough excuse to finally have an actual party. So, they summoned errr .... invited some good friends like a planetar, a couple of fire elementals, Mr Efreeti, and some undead skeletons (they really know how to party - undead NEVER sleep!).

Most of the party action was happenning up at this circle of stones. Seemed like an atmospheric place. Anyway, Illasera gatecrashed with some of her 'Black Reaver' buddies and had a brief evil rant.

Annakin immediately spake PW Silence at the mage and Wierdo spake PW Blind at Illasera. The latter made her magic resistance check, but the mage did not. A good thing about power word spells is that they don't need to 'travel' to the target. They just happen. This means that they beat even SCS's 'cast previously' spells if you are fast enough. The mage was going to have a bad time ...

The mage died very quickly indeed, with Mazzy missing the final blow but Anni hitting with MMM (left hand throw maybe), registering a hit just before the mage's PfMW flicked on. Mage dead, but not before his chain contingency with ADHW was set off. Suddenly it feels like that near final scene in Predator. Everyone runs! Fortunately, it only claims some cheap summons but hurts Mr Efreeti badly.

Jaheira and Starria added some mood lighting effects to the party with two Call Lightnings, which really made a mess of that ogre-like Black Reaver.

Illasera didn't last too much longer. The relentless lightning bolts managed to breach even her magic resistance.

Wierdo's Bhaalspawn Bretheren

Gromnir's Tower

In Saradush, Wierdo left her party up on the walls sniping fire giants while she went off to do some shopping and maybe compelte some quests. She did recover the wizard's spellbook, and once he had opened his shop Wierdo promptly proceeded to thieve. After nearly getting caught, she chugged some potions and put on some nice gloves and belt, then went back to the job. She managed to clean the wizard completely out of scrolls, including a few that she didn't have previously!

Moving right along, Wierdo completed quests and picked pockets. She came upon a monk named Ilyos (mod character) from whom she picked a nice Sandstone Ring. Basically, this ring makes the wearer immune to Time Stop, but is only usable by Ilyos. Or by Wierdo, who can Use Any Item!

After finishing the sewer and prison maps, the party rested. Wierdo wanted to get Gromnir and his tower without needed to retreat and rest. So they buffed and crept invisibly into the basement of the tower. At first they took the subtle approach.

Then they tried the not-so-subtle approach.

On the next level up, the party was prepared for trouble and responded quickly. Annakin launched a spell trigger at the battle mage - Pierce Magic, PW Silence & Breach. Once again, PW Silence hit immediately and really ruined the SCSII mage's day. He still got some spells off, but they were also being countered.

A bit more hack and slash and the mage was left alone and nearly dead. His contingency launched a PfMW. In a demonstration of how important timing is, look at this:

Mazzy's hit came at the same time as the contingency, but just before the effect took hold. So the hit registered and the dispel effect from Carosymr happened, but this takes a moment to occur. The PfMW took hold and protected the mage from Starria's hit. Then the dispel magic effect occured, dispelling the PfMW, and Bruce landed a killing hit with his magic fists.

Next: The party charges on upstairs to contront Gromnir.
