They shouldn't work against AoE. Is it a bug i'm not aware of?

Supposedly, they can work against trap based AoE spells directly targeted on the caster. That said, I usually have so many buffs running that it's hard to tell what is doing what. I've never actually tried just using Spell Deflection

Either way, stationary AoE spells will definitely not be stopped.

In any event, it's really the single target traps that are dangerous...

Incantatar wrote...

There are AoE traps not directed directly at the soloist, take the Prismatic Spray trap in the slavers compound, i'm pretty sure only SI:Conj is 100% save.

Indeed. That trap is so slow though that you can simply run away from the AOE. And you're right: SI:C works too.

You can also go the potion route but that would be a serious waste of resources. Jelly works as well.

Best,

A.

Thanks for the feedback on the traps. I was running stoneskin and mirror image, but not elemental protections. For the last couple of years I have been playing thief single, dual, and mutlis, and have never had to worry about traps--or else a beefy fighter type, who survived them easily. I know where most of the traps are, but not their damage type, except for a few, because I havent set any off in a long time....so I will be making another attempt with Amala v3, but treating traps with great respect.

Pfew! I feel SO much better now. I can be a grumpy-bumpy when I'm tired. I really needed that sleep.

So where was I? Oh yeah: after the dungeon.

As soon as I got out the dungeons, I ran into Immy. How fortuitous right! But guess what? Some wizards arrested her for casting a Magic Missle. Lame! As if those hypocrites don’t cast spells! I guess I’ll have to be careful in this town. I wouldn’t want those guys coming after me. It shouldn’t be a problem though. I’ll just cast my Polymorph Selfs out of sight and then go about my business. They aren’t going to arrest me for shapeshifting right?

Anyhoo, now I have to mount this big rescue mission and all and I don't even know where to start! Bummers!

I figured it made sense to nose around the town a bit. You know, get a feel, maybe meet some people- that sort of thing. So that's what I did

The first thing I checked out was the circus. They were closed. That was dissappointing. I was hoping the Amazing
Oopah would be there! But no. No Amazing Oopah. Just some chaotic gnome illusionist gone amuck. He did some really neat stuff though. Changed himself and the whole world around him. I wish I could do that! If he weren’t such a nut case, I would have talked shop with him. But he was: so I killed him.

Not too tough. I just casted Shield, Mirror Image, Blur, Stoneskins, and Polymorph Self. Then I killed his little guardians in my Spider and Flindy forms. Next, I went on up to meet the wacko gnome, Kalah. He talked tough but he was a total pushover. All I had to do was buff myself up again, toss some Meteors, and watch his world come crumbling down. That was that.

So, that was my day. Doesn't sound like much but, I'm still a little out of sorts. I guess I'm just gonna get sleep again and check out the rest of the town tomorrow. Not sure where I’ll go. Can’t find a copy of Lonely Planet Athkatla. I’m sure I’ll find something to do. Athkatla seems like an interesting place. It’ll all work out. It always does.

Alastria’s Journal: Entry 3

So! I finally found my copy of Lonely Planet Athkatla. Checked out the town too. I like it! There’s a lot of culture here. Plus, the people are more open. It’s pretty neat.

I went to the Bridge District first. I need a place to crash and LP recommended an inn there. It’s called the Five Flagons. So cool. Halflings all over. I just love watching halflings dance. They flop their feet around and writhe like jelly. Deet-ta-deet-ta-deet-ta dee. Deet-ta-deet-ta-deet-ta dee! Yeah. The Flagons is great. I’m definitely staying.

There was some bad stuff going on in the Bridge District though. Killings and the like. I got to the bottom of it though- just like a first class detective.

I talked to this homeless guy first. He saw the crime. Found some super-gross leather. Next, I followed another lead and talked to a girl about my age. She was a little weird though. I mean, I guess she was a flower vendor? You
know, selling flowers to the tourists and all. But she didn’t have any flowers! Weird. Anyhoo. She saw the crime too. Said the baddie smelled like tannin. Leather, tannin. Hmm. I thought it over for the rest of the day. Then it hit me: a Tanner! And guess what! There was a Tanner right net store. Gotcha!

I barged right in and confronted the guy. He ran. I chased but I never caught up. Instead, I ran into this mage. Total creep. I’m pretty sure he had something to do with all this. Either that or he was just buying leather, got confused, and ended up in the basement. A cunning detective like me considers all possibilities! Anyhoo. So there were some Ghasts and a pair of Rune Assassins down there. No problem there right? But then there was this huge Bone Golem too- that made things tricky.

I killed the Ghasts by popping off a couple of Sunfires- hurt the Assassins too. But the Assassins stayed all invisible and chugged potions. Wasn't even sure I hurt'em really. And my level 5s were gone! Cry!

So there's a Bone Golem, and two Assassions trying to dice up the Tweeds and me. Yikes!.

You know what though? We pulled it off. Killed the Bone Golem with my Flindy form. And I even killed one of the Assassins with some Skull Traps. There was one Assassin left but, whatevers! I solved the crime! And you can't kill everyone all the time right? I call it a win.

So yeah. Solved the crime. I told the local guard cap and got my reward. Gold and praise! Shower me with praise! I’m the spider queen of detectives! Hooray!

So what now? You guessed it: sleepy time. The Tweeds and I are back at the Flagons and we're gonna turn in. I'm thinking we'll check out that Copper Coronet place next maybe? Not sure really. We'll see.

Once again: good luck!

For what it's worth, XyX's Spell Reference claims Spell Deflection will stop "all' traps that throw spells. It's also a decent pick in SCS on other grounds since spell protections block Breach (assuming you have Consistent Breach installed). Food for thought.

I will see if Amala can squeeze in minor spell deflection for level 3.

Amala has made her way through Irenicus dungeon once again, and things were going well. She helped Aerie in the Circus, and drooled over the items in the Adventurer's Mart, which she cannot afford. She made a shopping list: money for Gaelan Bayle and the robe of Vecna are at the top of her list. She figured helping out Hendak and Maevar would go a long way toward partial fulfillment.

But, when she employed her favorite strategy (sunfire) on the Copper Coronet guards, she inadvertently hurt Hendak as well, who then became angry at her. She  tried charming him using scrolls (he saved all four attempts), and tried leading him to  his nemesis, the owner of the Copper Coronet, but he wouldnt fight him. Finally, she put both of them out of their misery, at which point Bernard offered her the upgraded CC stock. But no XP or Gold will be forthcoming from the Copper Coronet Slaver quest.

She then went to the Bridge District, and solved the skinner murders. The Rune Assassins fell to sunfires and skull traps. But the Bone Golem that spawned wasnt touched by anything she had except Melfs Meteors, and he chased her outside and from one end of the Bridge District to the other, while she ran around throwing meteors at him, hitting him maybe once out of every four attempts.

At that point, she decided she needed a rest, and so she rented a room at the Five Flagons Inn, hoping that tommorrow would be a better day.

Hunter the dualed fighter>mage FINAL Update!

Well my run did end but NOT for the reason I expected (e.g., battle).I got captured by the mind flayers had us fight some umber hulks. We won but Anomen got damaged and two party members got confused.

Well, the two confused party members were duking it out while the rest of us were waiting in our cell. Anomen was badly hurt and wanted to get all the healers to work on him, but as I said 2 of them were in the fighting pit.

I was going to have the two party members report to their cell. But when Imoen picked the pit door and opened it the whole party was insta-killed (scripted).

I'm sorry for your loss Corey_Russell. :(

After hearing all these stories, I'm getting really scared of scripted death scenes. I may just keep my distance from places like that...

I hope the rest of your run goes smoothly.

I can't imagine solo-ing a mage in SOA. I solo-ed an FMC in BGI, but BG 2  would be rough. I know people have done it, but I'm just saying it's impressive.

Ok, so I went to the Copper Coronet to check out the place. Ewh! Dirty. And the guys were creeps. But being the first class detective that I am, I scoped it out. It turned out they were running slaves! Slaves! That had to stop.

I snuck on back to bring it all down. I took some precautions though. Polymorph Self, Shield, Blur, Mirror Image, Stoneskins, Protection from Normal Missiles, Minor Spell Deflection. Ooh. And I added in my new favorite: Improved Invisibility via my super-cool ring of Air Control.

I opened the door, and before I knew it, I was swarmed with guards. There we mages, and a whole bunch of fighters. No worries. I cast Glitterdust, changed into a Spider, and then killed the fighters with ease. Most of them were just standing around blind. It was pretty silly. Once my Improved Invisibility ran out, I turned into a Mustard Jelly and took care of the mages. Victory for me!

Anyhoo. After killing off those first goober-doobers, a slave named Hendak told me I had to get a key to free everybody. I got it. No problem. I just refreshed my Polymorphs Self, went in and poisoned everybody. Done, done, fun in the sun.

When it was all over, Hendak, took over the place. Maybe it will get better now. I may come back in a couple years. The guy also told me that there were more slavers in the city. Alastria to the rescue! I’d have to prepare though so I took a nap.

Hendak said that I could find the place by going through the sewers. Not my cup, but I had a mission. So I went.

I ran into a bunch of random critters in the sewers: Otyughs, Hobgoblins, Kolbolds- stuff like that. Whatever. I killed them. Not much else to say.

That's when things got intersting. I found this boat- not sure what it's doing in the middle of the city but whatever: it was there. And it was packed to the gills with slavers. Clerics, Mages, Fighters, Thieves. You name it, they were slave'n. Now they're dead.

I buffed first of course. The usual: Stoneskines, Meteors, Polymorph Self, Shield, Protection from Normal Missles, Minor Spell Deflection, Blur, Mirror Image. Took Spell Immunity: Enchantment too so I wouldn't have to worry about Hold Person, Charm- stuff like that.

Well, it worked out pretty well. I ran into this cleric flanked by a bunch of fighters and thieves first. I totally hate Divination magic so the Cleric had to die quick. Used a couple Sunfires and some Meteors: that was that. Took out a whole bunch of his melee support to.

http://i1195.photobu...lesia_bh/S2.png

After the Sunfires were gone, I switched to Spider form and took down the rest of the flunkies.

http://i1195.photobu...lesia_bh/S4.png

It was time for Hagen next. First I Blinded him. I figured that would make my Stoneskins last WAY longer. Next, I fired off my Mirror Image, Strength Minor Sequencer. After that it was just a matter of pumping him full of poison- he was running scared and on the brink soon after. And then...yup- you got it: he croaked. No more Captain Slaver!

Hooray! The children are free! Joy! Rapture! Unadulterated bliss! And it’s all due to me!

http://i1195.photobu...esia_bh/S15.png

Ok. Well, truthfully, it wasn't quite over when Hagen fell. I did have to knock off some random Trolls and Yuan Ti. And then there were some fighters and mages that I had to deal with. But that wasn't exactly tough. The Trolls and Yuan Ti were killed in Spider form: simple poison and run mission. Then, after flipping into my Jelly to set off a Trap, I rebuffed for the fighters and mages -this time activating my Air Control Ring Improved Invisibility to seperate the magical and physical attacks in time. It worked like a charm.  I just lit off some Sunfires, cleaned up the rest of the fighters in Spider form, and then got into my Jelly before Improved Invisibility wore off. Then, it was simply a matter of getting the flighty mages to stay still while I put the beats on them. Mustard Jellies really freak them out! They go into panicked Gibbering mode! I had to finish the last one with Meteors since he ran so far away from me!

Anyhoo. After I freed the kiddies, I headed back to the Copper to tell Hendak the good news. While I was on my way, a bunch of people appeared out of nowhere. At first I thought: Hey! Maybe they’re here to praise me for my accomplishment. Nope. Bandits! I considered fighting them, but since I was out of spells, it didn’t make any sense. I mean, if they’re going to be foofers, and I can’t cast, then why bother right? So I just chugged an invisibility potion and took off. I’ll teach them a thing or to the next time I see them.

I made it back to the Copper, got my praises and prizes, and then went over to the Flagon to celebrate. That's where I am now. As a matter of fact, I'm drinking a complementary Golden Sands from Samuel. Heroism has it's perks. Teehee!

You mean the confused party members didn't get teleported back to the cell, while the rest did? That's strange. In my games they all get back even if confused. I forgot about that instant death.

I wonder if that's a bug... If so, then you may not have to consider your No Reload run over. Perhaps someone else can comment: I rarely enter the Illithid city.

Was it at all possible for your characters to get back to their cells without opening the door that led to the insta-kill? If not, that would imply that having a character fail a save against confusion would lead to an instakill. That doesn't seem right to me.

Best,

I am seriously considering another no-reload Improved Anvil 5.0 run, however I have a problem choosing a team. Solo sorcerer was by far the only impossible run of the mod, and sorc+blade was one of the easiest. So please help with suggestions. I'd like to keep it to a 2-man team, best if solo. No F/M (multi or dual).

Opening the door leads to an instant kill. I think in some dialogue it's explained that the Ilithids have complete control of the place and trying to flee is suicide. That means opening the doors, before the Githyanki hold the flayers back.

So the insta-kill due to leaving the arena was no bug, but the staying behind of the confused characters was afaik.

Minor Spell Deflection only works up to Level 7. So that PW:K trap in the Planar Sphere- that could still kill you if you counted on MSD+MI+Stoneskins. You'd still be vulnerable to Maze and Imprisonment (*) traps as well

If you can't budget for Spell Deflection, then you could just run SI:C and SI:A along with your MSD when passing over unknown traps. The Spell Immunities wouldl handle the Maze, Power Word, and Imprisonment Traps. MSD should cover the FoD, Petrification, and Charm traps.

Naturally, it would be wise to use elemental buffs as well.

Best,

A.

(*) Are there really Imprisonment traps in the game? Someone mentioned them, but I don't recall seeng one. I am pretty rusty though.

Understood. Here's what I'm wondering. Given that his characters HADN'T teleported back. Did he have a choice other than to open the door? If not, then that seems unfair.

I'd love to see another run Saros. I'm sure others would enjoy it as well.

Honestly, What I'd like to see is a party of 6 without exp exploits or gratuitous experience hunting- maybe even judiciously chosen stage based experience caps. That's what the mod is balanced for.

Thanx for the opinion. Although I don't agree with you on the last sentence, still wouldn't mind such a run, have done it with 3-4 man team pretty far away, so a team of six would be no trouble either. Thing is, I don't have that much time, and my experience with the mod shows that each challenge is a lot longer with a larger team, due to chess-like situations. Even with a 2-man team, each battle is twice more time-consuming compared to a solo run. That's why I focused on 2-man team. Last thing I was considering was 2-sorceress team, one evil, one neutral.

Is there anyone else that is no-reloading IA at all? Except you i never even heard anyone soloing it. (But probably they just keep silent, to not ****** off Silkret).
I can't help you with suggestions though, i stopped playing IA after 4.2. I like the game with both RP and strategy. IA sucks out the former and makes it into a nutty chessgame. Nevertheless i have great respect for your achievements and see nothing wrong with your approach of the game, as a pure and simple strategy. (In fact i think it's the more consequent and truthful approach following the mods philosophy, than pretending to still roleplaying. But thats my opinion.)

Is it possible that you capture some of your playthrough on video and upload it? I would like to see that. :)

Heehee! I've gotta new cloak! And I love it!

I found it in the Sewers of all places- not exactly a den of high fashion right. But this thing is super-cool- even if it does smell like kobold poo.

I got it off this Rakshasa guy. It took a little planning though.

I'm a potion junky: always have been, always will be. Well, I heard about this guy, Roger, in the Sewers who had a great stock. I figured I'd check it out.

Totally worth it- best potion shop I've seen in a long time. He had Potions of Clarity, Potions of Magic Shielding, Potions of Magic Protection, Potions of Firebreath, Potions of Defense, Potions of Mind Focusing- lots of my favs. I ended up spending WAY too much money, but i'm pretty stocked now. And that's good.

Ok. So enter the Rakshasa. I was trying to go back to the Flagons. But I got a little lost. I ended up running into this Rakshasa flanked by Kobolds. Now, I've never faced a Rakshasa before, but I figured it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Wrongers!

He was immune to every spell I had. And even my Meteors and Flind Form +3 Halbred wouldn't hurt him! I even tried this Mordy Sword scroll that I found. No dice. Run Tweedles! Run!

Yeah. So I ran. But you know, I noticed something when I was fighting him. While my magic didn't hurt him, HIS magic did. And he was a little sloppy with it too. Light bulb!

So here's what I did, I took a nap, buffed up, and then cast Spell Immunity: Evocation and Spell Immunity: Necromancy- hoping they would put the kibash on his Cloudkill and Skull Traps. Then I just stood in front of him.

Guess what he did then? Yup. He killed himself. I had to spend a little time in Jelly form since my Spell Immunities ran out, but that was all I had to do. Talk about easy! Hooray for stupidity!

Alll this would hardly be worth talking about if it weren't for the Cloak. But this thing... Like I said, I just love it. It lets me change into 2 more things: a Troll and a Rat. I have 8 different forms now! Skiddly-Diddly!

I really don't know how to use my new forms yet. But I'm really curious about this Rat. It's 90% resistant to all physical damage and it's pretty strong: 18/00. I can get that up to 21 with Draw on Holy Might. True, it's AC is terrible. And it doesn't have many hitpoints. Plus the little ratty claws don't really hurt stuff...I've got some ideas though.

That AC of 10? Well, it becomes -10 if I drink a Potion of Defense. And as for the Hitpoints...I have Potions of Fortitude, Vampiric Touch, Draw on Holy Might- I bet I can get it well over a hundred. Sounds good huh? But then there's just the ratty claws right? I figure I'll put, maybe, a Phantom Blade in his paws? That should work. Ohh! And when I get that Tenser's Transformation spell! And Improved Haste!...Yeah. I think this Rat and I are going to get along just fine...

The cloak does need a washing though. And a new name. Let’s see…I got it! “The Super-Stylish Cloak of the Transmuting Princess” Yeah, that’s it. I wish I could keep writing, but I’ve gotta go. I’ll write more soon. So much has happened! I even made a new friend! She’s got this goth thing going on. It’s a little much for me, but I bet she’ll get me hooked in. Show me where all the clubs are, that sort of thing. Ok. Now I’ve really got to go. My super-cool new friend wants me help her out with something. Toodle-Doodles!

Btw. I'm starting to see a huge problem with Alastria's build that may make her unworkable in the midgame. To function effectively at that stage, she'd need Tenser's. Improved Haste, ProMW, Contingency, and Spell Deflection at level 6. She'd also need Phantom Blade and Spell Shield at level 5. That isn't possible of course. Not sure what I'm going to do about this...

Thanx for the opinion. Although I don't agree with you on the last sentence,

I'm just quoting Sikret there actually. He says he balanced the mod for a party of 5 or greater. He tells players they should not complete significant portions of the mod with few than than 5 because most of the encounters become too easy do to fast level ups.

Of course, the EDE and a couple other encounter are harder with small groups, but once you've ironned and pressed your tactics for those...

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone: it's the dirty secret of soloing. It actually makes the game easier in most battles.

As I said, I'd really like to see the group of 6 with judicious EXP limitations.

Cheers,

A.

Except you i never even heard anyone soloing it. (But probably they just keep silent, to not ****** off Silkret).

I soloed 4.2 a couple years ago before my break. And yes: it does ****** Sikret off. That run was one of the motivators for the Spell Shield changes in the game.

You know Sikret: he doesn't like it when people play with his toys their way. And he didn't intend for it to be soloed. While I don't approve of the authoritarianism, I can see his point: soloing does mess up the balancing.

I admire those who would even think of no-reloading IA, and enjoyed both Alesia's and Saros's runs recorded some time ago. I would enjoy reading about another Saros. God help you! Glutton for punishment that you are.

I would be happy to no reload SoA +ToB. Long term goal yet unaccomplished. In that regard, Ive given up on my sorc, Amala version 3, mainly due to fatigue of running the same character through the low level game three times in a row. I just fired up an elven Mage-Thief multi named Amara. Somehow I just hate leaving traps and chests behind.

Arguably less powerful than a sorc at high levels, at least she wont have to worry about dying to some trap through carelessness. But of course there are advantages, such as foiling SCS mages with the use of Cloak of Non-Detection (bring on your True Sights!), backstabs and traps.

I am not as good as others at RP accounts, so I wont bother, and will only report eventful battles.

Her starting stats are: Str 18 Dex 19 Con 16 Int 18 Wis 9 Cha 8. Low wisdom for a mage, but she can always buff with potions for Wish if she decides to use it. High strength will allow for the Belt of inertial barrier. APR will still suck, but at least she can weild Kundane or Belm if she has to melee.

Plan is to steal the spell stores blind early on and sell extra spells to the cut purses. This is a challenge in itself because the SCS random city encounters spawn at night and there will be a fight with them right out of the dungeon when I try to sell my stolen goods. But I figure that is an appropriate price to pay for 20+ K gold right off the bat.

So the insta-kill due to leaving the arena was no bug, but the staying behind of the confused characters was afaik.

Understood. Here's what I'm wondering. Given that his characters HADN'T teleported back. Did he have a choice other than to open the door? If not, then that seems unfair.

I think I could just let the ones in the pit just wait until the next fight occurs (so just do nothing). But I wanted to do something and that finished me. I wasn't trying to escape just get to my cell, but obviously the game thought otherwise. Not sure if the next part would have occurred with party separated or not. I can test it, if it wouldn't then that's a bug, but if the game would have continued fine if I had waited then would be a legimate way for a no-reload to end.

Will report back after my test. I'm sure I can manage to fail my saves vs. confusion again.
