Sendai's Lair Pt2
Wierdo's band pressed on into Sendai's lair. before entering they hasted up, including Improved Haste for Mazzy and Starria (maybe Jaheira as well, can't recall now).
Anyway, the party ran through some tunnels full of umber hulks and spiders and stuff.
Then they came to a room with some drow and spiders, which were easily defeated. Past that the party came to the guard room, in which the drow Thelynn'ss and her buddies were waiting. Fortunately for Wierdo, her party was all invisible. Anyway, Wierdo nudged Bruce to go on in under stealth and use his Solar Stance. So Bruce went into position ....

Then used his Solar Stance ability to create a Dragon's Breath kind of effect on the drow, scattering them everywhere (much like a dragon wing buffet).

After Bruce, this fight was not very hard as he has effectively routed the drow and scattered their forces. However, it was cute to see Mazzy fighting so successfully alongside herself )Her Helm of Vailor simulacrum). Interestingly, Mazzy is using Critical Strike and scores a critical hit on a 1!.

Yes, doesn't it take you months to get through all of SOA and TOB? I fit this in around working and family life so I need to dedicate a night even just to post about Wierdo's latest adventures. She is nearly and the end of her quest now.

Sendai's lair Pt3
Next, Wierdo's band came across a lich. He has an evil rant to deliver.

It was not just an ordinary lich, and one with powerful apprentices.

It was a tough battle, but Wierdo's party won of course. Wierdo herself killed the lich, although his apprentices took a bit more killing.

I have a family and work full time, but no doesn't take me months, think about 4 weeks through SoA and maybe 2 weeks ToB. But you have much more content than I do, so I can understand you taking longer.

His name is Mesden, but thanks for the luck. I will need it, but have some already, two close calls with the mephits and he survived. It's interesting to note that if Mesden were a pure thief, he would have died, but thanks to his extra HP with his fighter levels (and helm of balduran) he was able to survive. So far he's been fun to play solo, but am unsure about the bigger fights with the many mobs, will have to see I guess...
Vessen is still alive as well, will get back on him when my laptop is returned from the shop.

Sendai
Wierdo's band finally confronted Sendai herself. They prepared themselves liberally. Found that a Planetar with Globe of Blades is really effective against drow.

Bruce diplayed his Lunar stnace skills, remaining active through the Sendai statue's Time Stop.

Annakin managed to get off a good Wish spell, raising everyone's characteristics to 25 temporarily. Have a very good look at the squirrel avatar under 191/191 - that is Starria!

Unfortunately, Sendai managed to get off a Chaos Sphere, which turned Starria into squirrel. But not just an ordinary rodent - a squirrel with 25 strength etc which could rip your arms out of their sockets!

Eventually, Wierdo defeated the statues and Sendai appeared to give her final evil rant.

After removing her spell protections liberally, and many spells to lower her magic resistance (Pierce Shie;d, Pierce Mageic, Lower resistance), magic missile was applied liberally as well.

Of course, Sendai eventually fell and she tried to have the last say.

Balthazar
Wierdo's band penetrated Balthazar's fortress and confronted the man in his 'throne room'. Wierdo, with her exceptinoal intgelligence, enhanced by a pot of Insight and a few items, made her representations to Balt. He saw the wisdom of her arguments and was converted to her cause.

Melissan appeared and was defiant.

A great fight occurred. Note that the magic missiles had almost no impact on the shadow
Bhall-touched' creatures creatred by Melissan.
None of this stopped Bruce from beating their brains out during a Time Stop (lunar stance).

Melissan eventually fell.

Then Wierdo had a good chat with Balthazar.

It seems that the party must now travel to ther Talking Heads again. Hopefully this will sort a few things out for the party!

Alessandra is currently making her way through the Planar Sphere. I was very pleased to see one of my characters finally getting help from the Knights against the Halflings.

It never made sense to me that they'd refuse to lift a finger if a good PC is being attacked by cannibalistic Halflings. In this case, Karyardi used a Sunfire with the Knights in range and they joined the fray. Ancan had the "You've made a fatal error in judgement!" battle cry which seemed oh-so appropriate. That was fun.

A.

Pure thieves can do the Portals safely. With a pure thief, I typically Backstab the Portal closest to the door, return to the Shadows, and then Backstab the Color Mephit Portal. Cleanup is easy after that.
Another tempting option would be to Stealth and go straight for the Color Mephit Portal. But if you Critical Miss, you can get boxed and find yourself in trouble. With the first portal down, there aren't enough Mephits for them to box you realy. Further, assuming you've drunk one of the Oils of Speed, you can get back into the Shadows quick and get another chance if you Critical Miss on the Portal near the door.
I'm sure there are other ways of going about it as well.
Anyhoo. Good luck with the rest of your adventure!

He survived the dungeon - playing safe by leaving ogre mage, mephits and vampire / battle mage alone. The intention is to concentrate on a minimum risk run this time, but if/when he dies I expect him to continue to the end of SoA outside the thread.
His current stats are shown below. He's been very lucky with HPs, so definitely deserves a bit of care and attention.

While I understand your point (that pure thieves can do it safely), what I meant was I was knocked unconscious and awoke with a sliver of life - that sliver is the fighter HP and Helm of Balduran margin - I would have been dead if everything was exactly the same but my class. I also don't know which one is the color mephit portal. In addition I DID critical miss and was stealthed - twice! Explains some of my difficulty I had...
Thanks for the luck. Being solo, am sure I could use all I can get.

The party entered Mae'Vars guildhouse from upstairs to surprise the thieves. A very effective Cone of Cold by Shakti helped cleaning up the main room. Since I was scared of backstabs, I kept Aedan invisible for most of the time. Achilleus and Argus were mainly used for backstabbing (now with actual damage!). Even Aedan had a successful attempt.
Downstairs, Mae'Vars henchmen were lured into Achilleus' traps, the remaining thieves were backstabbed.
Aedan has now acquired his own guild!
Quickly did the first task: Shakti's Cloak of Fear was very effective. The remaining assassins were killed with ranged weapons and backstabs. This is actually only the second time I'm doing this questline. I don't even remember if there is a second quest at all.
Next stop: Temple sewers.
Shakti used her wand of fire to kill some kobolds and lure the Rakshasa out, when suddenly another pack of kobolds spawned behind the group. Another charge of the wand took care of them. I find myself tempted to go into BG1 mode where I used to only have one melee fighter that I protected from fire with my Monk Naji, while everyone else was throwing fireballs via wands, oils of explosion, necklaces etc.
For Tarnor's group, the group summoned Skeletons and buffed the party, while the thieves initiated by backstabbing the mage before he could finish his true sight spell. However, only one of the backstabs actually hit him, so he got his protections up, but Shakti had a quick breach spell ready. A few seconds later, the group was pretty much defeated.
Aedan had his followers trap and surround Mekrath before attacking his minions. Shakti actually had some surprising luck with using her wand of fear: It only affected the yuan-ti mage, who walked right into our arms - bad for him. With Haer'Dalis freed, Aedan returned to the bridge district, ready to face the astral prison.
The bounty hunters attacked, but the group was well prepared. Shakti's CoC brought the group on the right side to injured, and the thieves + phobos quickly killed and backstabbed the yuan-ti. Aedan got some more backstabbing practice.
Without even luring it, the Wyvern pretty much attacked the party on its own. In general, the ki scripts at the prison were really strange. The Tana'Ri and his air elementals started walking around next to the Guardian for some reason. All in due time, though.
First, Achilleus, Argus and Aedan backstabbed the mages. The yuan-ti actually managed to confuse Aedan, and I was astonished at my stupidity for letting this happen (there would have been several ways to stop him). However, at least I managed to surround the pc (all dispel magic attempts failed) so he couldn't walk around and get himself killed. Chaos quickly wore off without anything bad happening.
Phobos lured the air elementals, which, as I said, behaved very strangely, to the group. He eventually also managed to separate the Tana'Ri from the Guardian (having to fight both would have been devastating). All saves were made (though Phobos was enraged most of the time anyway), so the fight was rather easy.
The Guardian was rather tough, mainly because I was acting stupid. My problem with this fight is that I simply don't know his script and his spell list very well, so I didn't prepare accordingly. As I soon realized, he can see through any form of invisibilty and while Achilleus was scouting, the Guardians AHW instantly killed him. Luckily, I managed to move him away from the party again while it was being cast, otherwise the effects would have propably been devastating (though Aedan was wearing the Belt of Internial Barrier). Also, while scouting some more, Argus got confused - should have learned CC for this area. There was no other choice but to pick up Achilleus' items and rest to raise him. At least Argus, with the Shield of Harmony and the Belt of Internial Barrier, managed to lure the salamanders away from the Guardian.
Before resting, I had Shakti and Andrastos learn a ton of summoning spells, and I kept sending in Skeletons and Animals to draw the Yuan-Ti Mage and the Guardian out of powerful spells. This strategy, while rather lame, was very effective, so a hasted team of Bears, Spiders and an Aerial Servant could charge to finally kill the Guardian.
I bought Vhailors Helmet, Sensate Amulet, Mercykiller Ring and some other minor items. Don't know exactly what to do next. Maybe guarded compound, or windspear hills, or unseeing eye.

I believe they're actually called Radiant mephits; this may be adding a little to the confusion.
If you have reliable stealth, another way to get rid of them is to simply "awaken" them, quickly move back towards the portal you entered through and HiS -- the door provides enough LoS disruption to do this quite easily. They'll chase after the location where you stealthed, but you can simply move into the room with the portals, slam the door behind you and kill the portals at your leisure. As long as the mephits stay alive (in the other barred-off room), the portals won't spawn any more.

So Mesden had just finished talking to Galen Bayle. I was thinking in the back of my mind, "Hmm, I wonder if I need to trigger the Suna Sunei ambush to get the Arbane? Nah.". Well should have listened to myself. In a rather obvious deja vu of another recent run, I ALSO fell to the hold person of the mage at the Copper Coronet. I did try horror but he saved. Hmmm...guess will do a BG 1 entry next.

Got it. I tend to refer to them based on what they do (Color Spray Mephits, Stun Mephits, Blindness Mephits, etc.) just to simplify things for my own purposes but I agree the conventional nomenclature would have been a better choice here. Sorry if that did actually confuse anyone.

Just a reminder: Ribald has a Potion of Freedom for sale which can be nice for pre-Arbane Mage or Cleric encounters.
And since a couple have run into trouble with the Copper Coronet mages recently, I'll note that you can Stealth by or juke the guard to avoid triggering that encounter if you like.
Good luck in your next run.

I'm not certain about this, but do you need the fixpack for the freedom potion to protect against hold person in BG 2? I know in my BG 1 install the freedom potion does not protect against that.

Hold Person applies Hold Creature Type (175). My understanding is that the pre-Baldurdash version of Potions of Freedom had immunity to Hold Creature Type (175) implemented. I'm forced to rely on secondary sources here however since I can't confirm that I have a copy of the original Potion of Freedom. Someone who can confirm the provenience of their POTN45 files can comment on that further.
In 2006, G3 did some work on the Potions of Freedom. Most notably, they removed Stun from the list of immunities based on David Gaider's comments (Currently, if you have the G3 Fixpack installed, you'd need the G3 Tweak Pack to regain the original game's Stun immunity on Potions of Freedom). They made other adjustments as well which I can't cover in full measure without positively IDed files. However, pre 2006 source material refers to Hold (109, 175) immunity associated with Potions of Freedom so I suspect that adding one or both of those effects was not part of the 2006 changes.
I'm guessing some else can fill in the rest if need be.
Anyhoo. Best of luck with your next run.
Best,
A.
Btw. On a related note, if you do go with the G3 Fixpack at some point sometime Corey, be aware that the Arbane immunites were trimmed back relative to the original game.

Alessandra just completed the Planar Prison Quest. It went very smoothly- no real threats here.
Haflings
The Deva took care of most the Halflings. Alessandra dropped a summoned Cornugon and finished Kayardi with the help of the Solemnic Knights.

Fire Elementals
This is a trivial encounter, but I like the teamwork on display between Alessandra and her Deva here...

Lavok
This was a standard mage kill. Took him down with the bow while countering his junk. His Stun immunity kept him in the game longer then most mages. No meaningful damage.

Demon
I was a little worried about this due to the Improved Fiend + Improved Staying Power setup, but that concern ended up being totally unwarranted: a Strength 25 Carsomyr Whirlwind fixed him within a round.

Tolgerias
Tolgerias was added to the now illustrious list of Mages killed by Darts of Stunning. His fall had a wrinkle though. The Deva triggered his girlfriend to get in the action early. She cast Web, held Tolgerias, and gave Alessandra plenty of time to tag him with 7 rounds of Stun. Had her strength been buffed before combat, she could have safely skipped the Darts of Stunning altogether.

His girlfriend wished she had had a different date this eve...

Cold Area
Immune to Cold

Fire Area
Immune to Fire

Golems
Very nearly immune to Golem hits. Between the AC, Mirror Images, Defender + AoF + Hardiness, they had very little hope of making meaningful progress.

Fin.
Alessandra has a bit of inventory management ahead of her. Then she'll grab Gaxx's Ring before doing the Unseeing Eye and Bodhi's Lair.
Best,
A.

I believe that the potential for Balthazar to join, and the extra Melissan fight, both come out of Ascension. She turns Baltz's four 'adherants' into "Bhaal-touched', who attack much like monks and have high magic resistance. A Comet spell and Bruce pretty much took care of them & Melissan as well.

Alessandra is over at Watcher's Keep now. Quick question for the SCS Soloists: How much of a pain in the keist are these Statues going to be? Are they dangerous? Time consuming? Resource consuming? All of the above? I have the Improved Watcher's Keep component installed as well as Significantly Increased Difficulty Spawns (not sure if either would effect this specific encounter but it seems possible, and btw she's at Level 21).
I'd appreciate any commentary.
Thanks in advance.
