Wierdo. Don't panic!

Many of the things that can put fear into a solo single class Thief could go completely unnoticed by a party. There is a good chance your crew can happily pay little mind to the things I mentioned earlier. They are likely things that should be kept in the back of the mind rather then obsessed over in Wierdo's case. Focus is worth understanding, however.

Focus is a Bhaalspawn ability that Wierdo will receive at the Throne of Bhaal. Its most important effect is that it grants immunity to Time Stop for 30 seconds.

You get one use of Focus. However, it will refresh in 60 seconds. The implication, of course, is that you can't keep it active constantly. Rather, you have to activate it just before Mel casts Time Stop. Mel's casting time on Time Stop is ~3.

If you are not running ProMW and miss a focus, SCS Mel can go Teleport Without Error-> Greater Whirlwind and kill you (of course having friends around that can attract her attention is a huge, huge boon). That's exactly what happened to Alesia. Mel had cast Time Stop silently early in the battle. Now that is a big deal because if you can't count on hearing "Praeses*" it's hard to know when to Focus. Bodhi caught Mel's attention that time, but the threat of a silent Time Stop was enough to throw Alesia off her game. Later, Mel starting casting a spell. Alesia feared it was Time Stop, and used Focus. It was not Mel's Time Stop however, and just after Focus expired, Mel used her Time Stop.

With the original Ascension Script, Dimension Dooing to the opposite side of the Throne have been a fine move in that case. Alesia tried that, but that's when she learned SCS had given Mel Teleport Without Error. Mel chewed through her Stoneksins and killed her- full health and cruising to dead just like that. The correct move after missing a Focus and hearing "Praeses" would have been ProMW.

Basically it boils down to this. Listen to what Mel says and stay close enough to hear her. If she goes Alteration, activate Focus. If you goof somehow and don't have Focus available when Mel says "Praeses" then go ProMW. Either way, it would behoove you to keep your Aura clear when she might go Time Stop. With a party, it may also make sense to give Mel more enticing targets then Wierdo.

Once again, don't panic! Remember my warning about Zamaan Ruul? He was a tough foe for solo Alesia sans The Wave, but he was completely trivial for your crew. There is a good chance many of my comments above will fall into the same category. Stick with the game plan that has served you well, understand Focus, and keep the other things in the back of your head. I remain confident your crew can get the job done.

Good Hunting!

A.

* It always sounded like "gracie" to me but according to HT it is actually spelled "praeses". Anyhoo. It's the first word of the Alteration school incantation

Good luck in your final battle Wierdo! I'll be crossing my fingers for your party!

For Inarius and his crew, this has been quite the eventful morning!
After they headed out from the Coronet, they decided they would assist the Bridge District with some recent murders. They eventually did, and earned many items of power in the progress!

Now feeling confident, they headed off to Umar and aided the people there but decided to hold off the Shadow Temple for now. Instead, they ventured to Trademeet and aided the City by solving many a task! The townsfolk where overjoyed, and celebrations lasted for several hours! Many a difficult fight was won this day - and it seems that Trademeet would allow the four adventurers to remember that forever!

Image IPB

With this victory close to mind, Inarius decided it was time to assist Nalia at her keep.
However, as the party ventured there - they where ambushed by a mob of monsters followed by their slaver masters. The fight was a complete disaster, as the monsters where berserkered - shrugging off every spell Inarius threw at them. Desh fell first, followed by Kessler as he was held by the enemy mage. Inarius kept running and drinking potions of invisibility while Kazim Hazil died during a Greater Command. Able to pick up everything his companions where carrying, by depleting the party's Invisibility Potion arsenal, Inarius managed to get away just barely.

Back at trademeet, Inarius sold off some equipment to earn the funds needed to raise his fallen companions.

Image IPB

Once back on their feet, they braved the keep and emerged victorious! Torgal was no match for the clever adventurers, using the doorway to their advantage!

Image IPB

It was a fierce journey through the keep, and both Kazim Hazil & Kessler where close to dying many a time. Worst where the stealthed spirit Trolls, that drained much power from both their strength and health.

The party has now returned to Athkatla, considering their next move.

Are you aware right-clicking loot allows you to stand over it without breaking invisibility and from a paused inventory screen you can pick it up.

@ Corey- I just noticed your comment about trying Breach against a Lich. Since you aren't using g3, you may want to try the Wand of Spell Striking version of Breach. In vanilla, the spell level on that was set to 6 allowing it to get over the top of Lich immunities. Note well though: that version will not ignore Spell Protections- you'd need to eliminate those first before using it.

Best of luck!

Greetings once again everyone!

The party has proceeded seemingly with care, though many a setback has slowed their progress.
In the sewers, they avenged the deaths of Arvan, Aerie, Jan Jansen and Anomen - putting down the foul Rakshasha with firm tactics and devestating blows!

Image IPB

Having picked up the quest to aid Haer'Dalis - they soon found themselves in battle with the toughest enemy they had faced thus far: Three Snake Sorcerers and two Snake Warriors. They switfly slew both Kazim Hazil and Kessler - even though the two warriors where fully buffed and prepared for a fight. Desh attempted to get away long enough to regain lost health - but was slain none the less. Inarius managed to use a tactic he recently learned from one Gate70 to retrieve the lost equipment of his comrades and return to get them raised.

Image IPB

Upon their return, they valiantly slew the Snake-people and Inarius earned his 12th level. They managed to rest up and prepare themselves for the Mage that lived in these quarters - but alas both Desh and Kessler fell early in this battle. Kazim Hazil showed great prowess in battle - avenging his two fallen comrades and saving the day!

Image IPB

Inarius did not prove himself in those battles, as all his spells where met with resistances or magic protection. He felt rather bad, seeing as he could do nothing but hide behind a bookshelf while his companions did both the fighting and falling. He did get a chance to redeem himself though, in a battle against a foul group of sewerdwellers! Using Greater Malison followed by slow, he allowed his companions time to set up a great assault and the enemy Mage was switfly put down.

Image IPB

The two Clerics followed shortly after - while Inarius blinded one of the two evil Dwarves. Victory was theirs - as was all the equipment! Finally the party is starting to shape up gear-wise - and hopefully will put the forces of evil to the test!

Alas, yet again the brave adventurers fall in battle. How the rest of you manages to get as far as you do surely amazes me. To me, it seems impossible - no matter how prepared I feel before a fight, it doesn't take long before I perish. Perhaps I entered this place too early. Inarius and his partners will be missed dearly - for I really felt good about them.

Inarius and his companions put up a great fight, they slew every monster they found in the Astral Prison, but eventually they all fell. Inarius attempted to get to his fallen comrades and use the wand of ressurection - but the foul demon could see through his invisibility. Thus the journey ended.

Hard luck Easymask. I think the planar prison is one of the harder areas to take on, but with all of them the key to success is being ready for the different types of attacks you face, i.e. preparing means in advance to negate them (of course not doing this does make things more exciting!).

Your words ring true Grond0. I had not expected so many Yuan-Ti Mage's alongside the Demon. Everything else went smoothly, by retreating to a better position when the need arose to do so. In this fight however, Kazim Hazil was quickly Mazed - thus resulting in a loss of the party's best tank. After that everything just went downhill. Inarius didn't have any good spells - only breach, and as he was a Conjurer he could only dispel invisibility with Glitterdust(that hardly did anything really). Enemies just swiftly dispel my prebuffs so the fights are just insane in difficulty!

Tough break, Easymask. But Grond0's right - the key is be able to ready for the various attacks you face. In planar prison, the master of thralls is a T'anaari -- T'anaaris see throug invisibility, and have have hold/stun attacks. Chaotic commands and free action would protect the tank so the tank could do their job.

I did not know that either, thank you for the information corey! I usually had Chaotic Command on Kessler as Kazim Hazil had the Shield of Harmony. I did have Free Action on Kazim, but I'm guessing one of the Yuan-Ti Mages dispelled it!

Sorry to hear that Easymask. I've taken to doing the Planar Sphere early with my characters due to the Boots of Speed but that ends up being one of the riskiest quests my characters have to do. The vast majority of SoA is risk free for my characters: the Planar Sphere is one of the "hotspots".

Just to provide a little more info on the vanilla Master of Thralls, he is as Corey notes, essentially a Tanar'ii. And as Grond0 mentioned, knowing the threats you'll face is key. The Master of Thralls will do Slashing damage in melee, use Vampiric Touch, and Death Gaze. Covering those in turn...

Melee. His THAC0 isn't that great actually so you can make him miss. The Golden Girdle and the Full Plate Slashing bonus can be helpful here as well as all around AC boosters. Note for the SCS players: SCS changed his damage to Crushing.

Vampiric Touch. VT applies Magic Damage so the Belt of Inertial Barrier can be helpful as can Protection from Magic Energy, Pro Energy, and Potions of Magic Shielding (the latter would be over-kill against the Master of Thralls).

Death Gaze. The Death Gaze applies Hold Creature Type (175) on a failed Save v. Death. The Save is unmodified so it's a relatively easy one to make. There are many options for reducing Saves v Death. Immunity options include the Greenstone Amulet, Firecam Plate, Ring of Free Action, Shield of Harmony, Arbane, Rage, Berserk, Potion of Freedom, Free Action, and Chaotic Commands. The Inquisitor and Undead Hunter immunities should work here as well. So, even if you don't have a Cleric around there is a goodly number of options.

* Note that early versions of the Shield of Harmony had some improperly implemented effects which were dispellable so you'd need to be careful using that if you are running without a fixpack.

In Vanilla, he only has ~50 hitpoints and lacks physical damage resistances so he can be taken out quick by a buffed up warrior.

As for the Warden, his invisibility detection can be turned against him since you can use it to seperate him from his support Yuan-Ti casters (This can feel dirty however, it's something I only allow solo characters and even then I feel a little bad about it.). Also, it's worth noting that the Warden is one of the enemies where the designers left excellent things for killing him near by: Elemental Arrows, Arrows of Biting, and Darts of Stunning can all be helpful when taking him down.

Anyhoo. Good luck with your next run. As you've noted, with practice, No Reloading BG1 can become par. The same thing is true of SoA and vanilla ToB. Based on what I've seen in the BG thread, you'll likely be running deep into BGII fairly soon. There's just more to know and more to defend against but the game remains the same: knowing your enemy and having the right defensive tools at had will get you where you want to go.

Best,

A.

Btw. This post from Ashoka's run provides a decent over-view of how to safely do the Planar Prison early (This was with SCS version, but without the Demon upgrades).Note that you'll get the Yuan-Ti spawns at higher experience levels. The ones in Mekrath's lair will mirror the ones you'll see in the Planar Prison.

Thank you ever so much for such an indept reply to my run Alesia, I learned quite a lot from your post! It seems that I had confused the Master of Thralls with the Warden - as the Demon was easy for the party to take down. Inarius used his Ring of Air Control to subdue one of the two Air Elementals - and the party then dealt with the Demon very fast. Everything but the Warden went well, the Demon Knight like creature.

Kazim Hazil had Death Ward, the Shield of Harmony as well as the Cleric spell Freedom(not sure if that is the proper name, perhaps it's Free Action - looks like two waves). In addition to DUHM and other Cleric buffs. When I entered the Warden area, I was trying to get there fast as I had just released the Thralls - hoping they would assist me. I'm guess that's why things got chaotic very fast, as they where already dead before I got there. What I think happened is that the Yuan-Ti Mages instantly dispelled every buff my party had - then the Warden Mazed Kazim. Even with -8 AC, Kessler was easily slain by two Green Yuan-Ti warriors and the Warden. After that the fight was pretty much over.

I think the next time around I'll get a pure tank instead of a Fighter/Cleric - rather going with a secondary spellcaster(Cleric/Mage in addition to the party's main Mage). I found things to be too chaotic for me with two Melee's and an archer, instead of what I had completed BG1 with. The Barrier Belt and the Cloak of Displacement I bought from Trademeet was used by Inarius ever since we picked them up - just because I didn't want some random spell to kill him. I guess I should put that on the main tank instead.

I'll be sure to look up on how Ashoka did the Planar Prison, as I will need all the help I can get to complete it next time I make it to Amn!

I'm playing on core with SCS active, no "improved" stuff though - but the game is totally different from what I'm used to(Easy non-SCS!)

I am sorry to see your run end Easymask.. don't lose hope you have mastered BG1 and with the energy you put into this challenge you will for sure master BG2, too.

Alesia_BH covered all the solid advice that was left to give from what I can see.. covering the needed immunities comfortably was why I postponed going to the prison myself until very late even though the boots of speed is so nice.
It has been interesting at times playing a backstabber with no such boots but a learning experience none the less.

Anatole has actually just, finaly, finished the Planar prison herself.. at level 34! It was done without much trouble as her bag of holding is just about bursting from usefull items to cover just about any situation by now... only moment that made me pause was when one of the yuan-ti mages got off a finger of death spell.. it was countered with activating her avoid death thief ability. What a way to end had it not been countered...

For some reason I mut have been pressing the wrong button for taking print screens during the prison run.. no idea what happened there. You guys will have to take my word for it that it was done, including the risky finger of death spell episode :P

Yeah. I suspected that after looking at the screenshot and noticing mention of the Yuan-Ti. Initially, I had just seen Corey's post and had assumed it was the Master of Thralls who did the deed.

As mentioned, one of the easier ways to take down the Warden is to use his invisibility detection to separate him from the others and then take him down with tactical ammo (Arrows of Dispelling, Elemental Arrows, Arrows of Biting, Darts of Stunning). Just be sure that you'll make your saves against anything he might get off (In my install, he is fond of Sphere of Chaos in particular). As a reminder, there are a number of ways of getting your saves down. Potions of Stone Form,  Potions of Magic Shielding, Ring of Air Control Improved Invisibility, and equipable items are the ones available to all save the Wizard Slayer. Of course, it would behoove you to time your use of the Potions carefully due to the dispel risk.

I'll note also that my characters typically skip magical armor, wear the RoP+2, and import the Claw. That takes 5 off of their Saves v Spells (Cloak of Displacement/Spear of the Unicorn as needed largely remedies the Save v. Death Penalty, the lost Save on the Helm of Balduran can be taken through the Helm of Defense). And while I often skip the little people on role playing grounds, they can get an additional save bonus up to 5. I'm guessing you can see how having a Halfling, for example, wearing RoP+Claw and keeping a RoAC around to counter Malison and the like could have less trouble with spells.

What I think happened is that the Yuan-Ti Mages instantly dispelled every buff my party

That's a good guess. As a reminder, for arcane characters, SI:A will stop Remove Magic. If you have SI:A up, they'll try to take it down with Spell Thrust being a preferred option. Spell Thrust, in turn, can be foiled by II untargettability if you don't have the Anti-Magic Attacks Target Through Improved Invisibility tweak installed. With it installed, you can use a Spell Shield or GoI (I'm told) to stop Spell Thrust. That, however, may induce a Secret Word cast. Secret Word can be caught with a Spell Shield.

With non-arcane characters, I typically only pre-buff with things that I wouldn't mind seeing dispelled when facing Remove capable foes. I then keep my Aura clear so that I can quaff the right Potion just before a spell tales effect. So, for example, with a solo thief at low levels, I might enter a mage battle with something renewable active (RoAC:II) or something cheap and widely available like a Potion of Fire Resistance and let stuff like that draw out Removes. Then, if say, Chaos is en route, and I lack item based immunity or highly negative saves, I'll quaff a Potion of Clarity before the Chaos reaches.

I'll be sure to look up on how Ashoka did the Planar Prison, as I will need all the help I can get to complete it next time I make it to Amn!

Makes sense. The Planar Prison can be tricky.

One of the most important things that Ashoka did was complete it early that insured she got the Umber Hulks instead of the Yuan-Ti mage spawns. In my install, with Significantly Increased Difficulty Spawns installed, the Yuan-Ti kick in at 400k. Alessandra did it post 400k with the Yuan-Ti so you can check that one if you'd like to do it a touch later.

I'm playing on core with SCS active, no "improved" stuff though - but the game is totally different from what I'm used to(Easy non-SCS!)

Understood. Even without the "improveds" SCS makes a big difference- especially with Smarter Mages/Priests + Full Prebuffs, Potions for NPCs + Breakage. There is a learning curve but I find it can be far more interesting, you'll get it I'm sure. :)

Anyhoo: best of luck in your next run!

A.

Not a problem. So you know, I usually refrain from offering tips just because, for some players, the last thing they want to hear after a foul up is: "You could have done x."  I can comment on your runs if you like though. :)

UD3;

@Alesia_BH; Happy trails... I'll miss you!

After visiting the Adventure Mart to unload junk I arranged to collaborate with a local thief’s guild in order to get their help liberating ImoenLady Yuth put me onto the need for a licence, so I stopped by the government district, 5000g later and I’m legal. Tolgerias hired us to track down Valygar for him but first things first… collected a temp thief named Jan to cover any trap/door needs I might require until sis returns and then we off to fetch Mazzy.
First ambush; Eldarin captained a group of slavers with imaginative names like mage slaver… SCS actually makes these guys put up a respectable battle but fear, clouds & web allowed my team to steal the win. I’d sware that there was a wounded harper with them in my vision but a search failed to reveal him?

Collected Mazzy but Valygar is proving himself to be more allusive… I had to return and use his tax records (of all things) in order to locate his cabin but on the up side I ran into some more slavers with the harper from my vision. I’m trying to collect my core group and with Valygar safety recruited I figured on doing some jobs for the thief guild but before leaving I agreed to fetch some special blood in exchange for a nice sword and the contingency spell meanwhile his daughter got permission to date her toyboy… what a bargain.

My old pal Edwin gave me a quest to kill a mage lackey, Straight-forward enough but when I finally cut pass the guards and encountered Rayic the cheeky bugger dropped a ‘Spell Trigger’… where did he get a level 8 spell? Needless to say I retreated and booked a night at the inn to recharge before returning but at the next encounter he fell without incident (perhaps he just had the one scroll)… I now have the 15,000g for chapter 3 & Edwin was so impressed that he helped me finish up the guild plus he even gave me his robes before saying ciao.

Image IPB Image IPB Image IPB

[At this point I realised that I have confused Amber with the simular NPC Fade so instead of starting chapter 3 yet I’m going to the jail… I blame Bioware for tempting me with their star wars beta test week end… I’ll be back]

Note to self; stop having Jan’s turnip coffee at night… strange dreams!

See ya, I'll probably do the same once Wierdo is finished with Melissan in the coming fight, one way or another. I'll be going overseas soon so will definitely take a break from playing.

Eventually, some time in the new year, I think I'll start off again in BG1 with a male, evil, half-Orc fighter/assassin named Razor. I know this class isn't normally possible in BG2 (as assassin is a kit and normally you only get kit options for pure classes), but it is possible in AD&D 2nd edition so I will have to Shadowkeeper him slightly.

Normally I don't like playing evil, but this would be in honor of a former PnP player who created this character. Something different, too.

Vessen the hafling level 20 Priest of Lathander adventure continues...

The homes of the 3 non-drow races (Kua-Toa, Beholders, Illithids) were cleared mostly without incident, but a few things happened:
* In the beholder's lair, Joshua got imprisoned. Fortunately a freedom scroll later and he was back in business
* The battle vs the demon knights in Kua-Toa Lair: despite considerable preparation, both buffs and summons, the party got beat up here, incuding 2 deaths - Joshua, however tanked like a champion.
Image IPB
* Ust Natha quests - well normally I breeze through these, however I ran into a problem. When I went to treasury, I sent the PC by himself to deal with the Temple guards. Apparently he took too long and they sounded an alarm throughout the city (e.g., entire city hostile now). Oops. Well we did recover the eggs and successfully battled out way out of the city. Adalon was pleased with our success. We managed to battle our way to the surface and meet the elves there as well.

We rested and headed to the slums. Who was there to meet us but the Githyanki. We didn't give them the sword piece, just on principle and they didn't like that and battled us. We had summons helping us and call lightning and plague of insects did not help them and they were taken down quickly.

It was time to deal with the Twisted Rune hide-out. We entered it and Uriah laid down 4 snares in the opening area where we spawn in. We got 5 summons and put them in the main area. Only Joshua showed himself, since he has the best saves of everyone. The battle commenced. Joshua able to keep busy a large number of enemies. The lich spawned at the group, Joshua's snares slammed the lich - the lich died shortly thereafer, but not before DISINTEGRATING URIAH. Another group mate permanently dead. While Joshua was keeping the enemies busy, both Paja and Vessen cast firestorm at Joshua's position. This killed all the enemies except one mage who promptly mazed Joshua. She didn't see the party, however. So the party summoned 5 more summons (their earlier summons got killed by a death spell we believe) and sent them toward the mage -- the summons did in fact kill the mage. The staff of the magi went to Imoen.

Time to consider who to replace Uriah. No matter who we choose they will be severely underleveled until we can get to ToB. Imoen can handle our thieving duties (she has that ring that increases her trap skill to 105%), and in ToB melee gets more useful with the massive melee weapons. Therefore, we recruited Minsc, who will use Lilacor for now, but would like to use halberds once he get more proficiencies. He will be in the #3 spot. Equipping him was no problem at all, lots of stuff in bag of holding for him.

Going to Cromwell will be our next goal, and then exploring the few new areas that opened up.
