Serg, very nice Abazigal fight!
Alesia: you make it look so easy... :o

Update on Valhyron, dual class Priest of Talos/Mage.
Valhyron made moderate progress through Chapter II. Until he purchased magical license, he had to deal with enemies using priest spells:
http://i264.photobuc...oA/Baldr016.jpg

Needless to say, Valhyron purchased licence to arcane magic as fast as he could.
He was ambushed by Suna Seni, bandits who poisoned Renfeld and several groups of slavers. Those ambushes helped him to secure enough gold to purchase some vital spells.

http://i264.photobuc...oA/Baldr019.jpg

Mugger ambush in Bridge district district helped him to practice lightning bolt – gift of Talos. Combination of LB with elemental shield is sweet.
http://i264.photobuc...oA/Baldr029.jpg

In fight with Xzar’s apprentices, he used Weirdo’s immolation tactics. It works well, at least for low level mages:

He defeated Kalah in circus tent, completed all minor quests in Graveyard district, solved skinner murders, helped Jan Jansen, saved Viconia, brought false Illithium to sir Sarles and started to work for Renal Bloodscalp.Valhyron is currently Priest of Talos 7 / Mage 12 with 85 hp.

Good to see your cleric/mage still kicking, Vaclavc - may cleric/mages dominate in Amn!

@corey_russell, I was just suggesting that as a stop-gap until you get access to resurrection spells... My only strategic issue with A’lisia so far is her distinct lack of a rez until she reaches ToB.

p.s.
Speaking of chess, this is where our game group does battle... perhaps I’ll see you there.  :wub:

Ah yes, well using temples right now, I can also use the RoR that Ribald has for sale, but thanks for the tip nevertheless.

As for the chess gaming site, I'll look at it. I currently play chess at the Internet Chess Club - arguable the best web site in the world to play and improve your chess - the world's chess grandmasters play there almost exclusively, and ton of content to improve one's game.

UD10;

Just a quick one;
With plenty of gold now in the kitty I paid the thief guild their bribe money & even had enough to have a robe/ cloak made from the skins I come across while sorting Ymmyrt out... I gave the necklace to A’Lisia because I can already cast ‘Vocalise’ on my own. I should have stopped there but decided to press onwards with the chores for Edwin... Somehow charging two stone golems seemed perfectly reasonable at the time, predictably R.I.P. Mazzy! :crying:Once the damage was done I sobered up fast and sent in the correct tank for the job, with his defensive buff going Hear’dalis just lathed off their enervate attempts to hit him & Rayic was dispatched by the simple expedite of multiple wand of lightning shots (3).

Image IPB Image IPB Image IPB

The loss of Mazzys’ dual-wield DPS will seriously crimp my end game chances but it’s the stupidity that I’m most annoyed with myself over (I have no excuse)... as far as her replacement goes;
Minsc & Korgan are out because I have Aerie... I might have taken the ranger anyway if I still had Keldorn to calm him down.
I suppose that leaves Valygar & Yoshimo but I’ll sleep on it and let you know later. :wub:

Great AC there, Alesia! With that kind of AC, mindflayers can't touch you without criticals.

Thanks, Most things need Criticals to hit Alessandra. -16 is just her base AC. She layers in buffs to improve upon that. Gromnir, for example, was facing an effective AC of around -30.

Still, the AC alone wouldn't be an effective defense. But when it is coupled with 60%-80% Physical Damage resistance and non-aura based healing via elemental damage and Foebane, she becomes very hard to kill.

Out of curiosity, Alesia - is that kind of fight part of Ascension or SCS II? I've browsed their readme files and don't found anything like that...:blush:

Ascension improves the 5 and the battles at the Throne. All the other battle improvements come from SCS.

As for Pocket Plane challenge one, I believe that is just the original battle with the final foes scripted to their full potential. You do fight versions of Irenicus, Bodhi, and Sarevok in vanilla but they were hamfisted for the covenience of players who may have started new characters in ToB (llasera was gimped in vanilla for a similar reason). SCS just takes the gloves off.

Best,

A.

Btw. Congrats on taking down Abby Serg!

Understood. Those early Tougher Battle Series fights can give people grief but if you have a sound battle plan, they can be straightforward. The Gromnir fight, for example, can be thought of in military terms. What you essentially have is an infantry position (Gromnir and Pet), a group of flankers (Elder and Berenna), and a pair of artillery batteries (casters) to the north and south. If you engage the infantry, let the flankers flank, and take artillery fire from both sides things can get ugly. However, if you sweep east and eliminate the flankers, then sweep south and destroy the artillery battery there before engaging the infantry south of the northern artillery battery's range of fire, then life gets easier.

I personally find Tougher Illasera and Gromnir to be well balanced for pre-HLA characters. In my pre-break Trilogy No Reloads with Ascension, I deliberately restricted experience progression so my characters wouldn't get HLAs untill after Gromnir. In future runs, I intend to use either DEFJam or Stage Based Experience caps to recover that balancing.

Anyhoo. Good luck with you Priest of Talos-> Mage!

Quick Note on Alessandra's Game:

I've uploaded a video covering the Illasera fight. This may be the last video because I don't really have songs that pair well with the other battles.

The video can be found here.

Cody and his band of cleric/mages continue their adventures...

The party attempted to take care of Maevar and his fellow guildmates. The first floor went slowly, though pretty safely with all our buffs. We don't have many true-seeings yet at this point. However quite a few buffs ran out by the time we entered the 2nd floor - here was disaster. Belle was killed quickly, and the thieves (or perhaps they are fighter/thieves?) saved against a lot of our spells. The battle quickly degenerated into a free for all across the entire floor. Cody got in a one-on-one battle with Ashinai (? on spelling) - she saved vs. his spells and also took the damage spells like a champ. Cody did a potion of extra healing, but she burned it down just as fast as he got it up. Since I can only potion once per round per character, if I tell him to potion he will just stand there and be killed, so he runs for his life - see below:
Image IPB
I could try to potion again, but might not be enough time yet, and the thief is right on Cody's tail. Cody runs for the door, and everyone else trys to attack the thief following me. Cody exits, moves a bit heals and then goes invisible (via potion). The rest of the party also helped by blinding the thief following Cody just before the thief would have gone outside to follow him. The 3 remaining party members struggled and finally took down all the thieves, by summoning some skeletons to help.

VERY close call. The party looted, resurrected Belle, rested and returned. Fortunately Maevar was a bit easier. We don't have really good summons yet, but just out of curiousity we summoned 5 skeletons with haste/bless/chat and sent them to talk to Maevar and his goons. We were shocked at the result - the skeletons managed to kill Maevar's gang taking only one casualty in return! Maybe these animated dead are better than I thought.

After reporting our success to Renal Bloodscalp, everyone leveled to level 9 mage except Aerie did to level 9 cleric. We then headed to Umar Hills. With blur buff, the treasure chest creature could only hold Aerie so was no problem. The stone golem in the Cowled Wizard's house fell easily as well. Time to head to Umar Temple.

My strategy for this area was summons if available, and then 2 rounds of melf's -- Aerie can't help with this so she uses her sling. THEN when the melf's minute meteors run out we use invisibility 10', REST, then we are recharged and continue the fight. We did this a number of times to recharge our spells. Belle died again by the crystal pedestal, lot of enemies encountered, we used quite a few resources to survive, so Cody brought Belle back and they recharged their spells by what I just described a moment ago. Below is a sample of the battle strategy in action:
Image IPB

They currently working their way past the lava pit.

Thanks! :happy:
And I should mention that there are no any  versions of Irenicus, Bodhi, and Sarevok in vanilla Pocket plane challenge #1. Just trash monsters capped with Drow. So that's why your modded version confused me as I couldn't find any traces of that change in readme. My next runs definitely will be with both SCS/SCSII and Ascension installed so following your runs enlightens me what to expect there... Thanks again for all of your detailed expositions - it helps!:wizard:

@everyone

Just wanted to say that I've wanted to be part of the conversations over the past couple of days, but I'm travelling and spilled beer on my ancient laptop's keyboard 2-3 days ago. Laptop is still working but keyboard is fritzed.

There's been some great action happenning and even mentions of Wierdo's own adventures, but I've been digitally crippled. Just borrowing another laptop to post this!

Luckily I am in Bangkok right now, so hopefully I'll be able to find a new laptop keyboard (Toshiba Tecra A3) at the Pantip Plaza - if I ever find the time and energy to get there! (it is a pretty crazy place, just have to be hard and say a clear NO to the pirate p0rn DVD sellers).

Keep up all the great gaming! Say "hi" to Winthrop for me.

Cheers for now, W.

Understood. It's been so long since I've played vanilla (~7 years), that I (apparently) hadn't remembered what the original Pocket Plane Challenge #1 battle was like (other then that it was trivial). I'm only using SCS and Ascension though so any changes come from the combination thereof.

Btw. PPC Irenicus appears to have a Staff of the Magi in my install so if you haven't removed the invisibility while equipped feature, watch out for that.

I'm glad to hear it. I can provide more detail if you like. I try to avoid being too spoilery when I post on fights. I can comment further on buffs, battle plans, and item choices though if people would appreciate that.

Perhaps it's a level sensitive spawn?

That's what I recall. I believe the 3rd on the evil side is a Paladin of the Order but I'm not certain

They are all easily forgotten in vanilla...

Minsc will go berserk if she takes heavy damage, which is sometimes ok if he happens to be amongst enemy’s but can be a real pain in the buttocks if he decides to attack your own party... while we are discussing it, having Keldorn in the same party allows the ranger the calm down automatically after the battle is over.

Quick Note on Alessandra's Game:

Alessandra is currently in the Marching Mountains. It would suffice to say that the regulars in Yaga-Town are not enjoying fighting Alessandra.

The Burning Men get one hit by The Wave.
Image IPB

The Hammer wielding Giants deal out naught but massive regen due to Alessandra's +100% to Fire and Crushing Damage. And while the Axe wielding Giants appear to make progress (like these blokes who seem to have put a dent in Alessandra's hitpoint total).
Image IPB

They actually can't because all the Foebane hits they're taking are sending her well above base.
Image IPB

Hoping to get a decent fight out of the Berenn Double Dragon encounter. We'll see how it goes.

Best,

A.

Btw. Alessandra just took down the first Fire Giant mob.

I enter the BG2 no reload challenge with Pzyas.

He succeded in BG1 with BGT mod and notably SCS (light on prebuff and tactical encounter additions). Since he and his party were quite adventurous in the Sword Coast he starts with lvl 11. Sounds overpowered but in party play this yields quite the disadvantage, namely you have less freedom to choose npc abilities. Anomen with pips in Quartstaff?

This is a staged no reload btw, since i already failed several months ago with him in BG2.

Stats:
Name - Pzyas
class - Conjurer
Alignment - Lawful Neutral (i.e. no stealing from humanoids, no overly chaotic behaviour, law in Amn is respected)
Attributes - 10, 18, 17, 19, 18, 16 (quite godly)
Hp - 64
Abilities - All blue Bhaal powers. Pips in quarterstaff and slings, later daggers then darts. Starting spells everything available in BG1, no BG2 spells except Find Familiar.

Modifications: NONE. Only patch + G3 Fixpack v9.

It's quite an experience playing vanilla after years of SCS2, tweaks and other mods. I never finished BG2 no reload, so i will have to succeed first in vanilla.

Rules: party, light on metagaming, doing most side quests, alignment (but more on the noble side for experience reasons), no cheating, no exploits.

The "light on metagaming" rule is the most challenging part and fills the SCS2 lack quite good in some parts. E.g. i faced the sewer party without any short term buffs and i won't fight the Pooky party without reason. Not resting often is also part of the challenge.

@corey_russel
it's temporary from Alesia's usage of Foebane+5 which casts Larloch's Minor Drain on hit. Wasn't aware of it's potential before, i admit.

Yup. Her base total is just 157. The Laroch's on Foebane bumps it up. She can get over 500HP with enough Whirlwinding.

And yeah it is ridiculous. When you are rolling with ~400HP, 65% resistance to physical damage, highly negative saves, and immunity to spell damage as needed, there isn't a whole lot that can stop you. Since upgrading the blade, she has ended all her fights with more hitpoints then she started with.

Foebane is yet another item screaming out for nerfing.

Best,

A.

Btw. In the past, I've avoided Foebane (and Carsomyr) because they seemed so clearly overpowered. I've decided to fiddle with them in this game just to see how they work out in practice. They are both as over the top as I expected. They'll either be restricted or nerfed in future runs.

Good luck Incantar. You didn't say whether "gore" is on? If "gore" is off, you won't get chunked, but if it is on, then going unbuffed (such as planar prison) could result in someone being chunked by disintegrate. That would certainly be a challenge.

Gore is on and difficulty is core. There also won't be any changes on the slider at all.

I have yet to describe what happened but there were only 2 NPC deaths so far (end of Ch3) and one of those was permanently but not chunked.

Oh and  perhaps noteworthy - there is no Joluv in my game.

Joluv? Is that the bonus merchant in Copper Coronet? He's not in my games either, so I never get that +5 sling or that weapon with damage resistance that so many players rave about.
