UD11;

Perhaps I’m a little paranoid after getting Mazzy splatted but figured it’s healthier to be certain when dealing with back stabbers... Sometimes having a large party just gets in the way so I decided it was better to just take Aerie (Sanctuary) & myself (invisible) to deal with them. She borrowed my circus ring to charm the prisoner into leaving his cell then put up ‘Spell Immunity (Evocation)’ whist I layered the area in ‘Cloud Kill’ & ‘Stinking Cloud’. I then ran upstairs to drop ‘Death Fog’ as Mae'Var gasped his last... the only hiccup happened when the Immunity disbanded but she managed to run outside before the vapours overcame her. With the thieves now dispatched I asked Edwin to leave the group because despite the extra missiles he just doesn’t fit in... He took it well so I doubt the idea of fighting vampires held much appeal for him.

Bugs/issues encountered;
~WIDESCREEN/WIDESCREEN.TP2~ #0 #0 // Widescreen Mod -> for the original Infinity Engine (CHOOSE THIS!): Widescreen Mod v3.02

I’ve transferred this game to my work laptop & therefore added in the widescreen mod in order to better utilise my valuable screen space.
p.s. I can not remember if there is any comeback to this but as kamuzu is not evil I decided to set him free.

Joluv? Is that the bonus merchant in Copper Coronet? He's not in my games either, so I never get that +5 sling or that weapon with damage resistance that so many players rave about.

Deidre and Joluv were both official Bioware releases. Deidre comes from the ToB patch, Joluv a bonus CD.

Both bonus merchants introduce over-powered items, but nothing more egregious then the standard fair. Vhailor, Vecna, the Shield of Balduran and The Defender are among the bonus merchant items that can lead to balancing issues however. Mods can redress this by nerfing them, removing them, or pushing them into ToB. Personal restrictions can solve the problem as well of course.

Btw. The Sling of Everard is arguably overpowered if you are running without a fixpack because it will stack stength damage in that case making it a +5 Sling of Seeking in essence. With a fixpack installed, it is pretty pricey for what it offers but it can have specific tactical uses that justify the cost.

Releasing him has no effect (although killing him will! I lost 5 rep with an area effect against Maevar one time) except that if you have the thieve's stronghold he will show himself at one point and give you a tip about a task you were/are just about to perform.

Thanks corey_russell… speaking of strong-holds have you made a judgement yet as to mage or cleric?

I haven't. But guess I should do the mage one, as I never have had that stronghold yet. You say how can that be, with me having defeated BG 2 at least 2 dozen times? Well it's simple really..I never have made a pure mage through BG 1 (not even with reloads), the mages that HAVE made it have always been multi/dual classed, typically thief or fighter and since I do both of those strongholds early, ended up with those.

Quick Note on Alessandra's Game:

Alessandra has completed the Berenn-Red Dragon encounter and will face Yaga-Shura soon. I'll post on the Yaga fight later in the day. I'll also post on the SCS Yaga Shura's lair if there is interest.

Best,

A.

Hmm. We're on the same side of the world then. I'm in SE Asia as well. I spent much of last summer in Thailand.

Anyhoo. Good luck with the laptop search!

It is a small world and forums like these bring people together from across the globe.

Bangkok is more of a second home for me as my spouse and extended family live here. The recent floods have had a huge impact. ATM, I'm spending much of time time sanding back hardwood furniture damaged by the floodwater. Everything else that got flooded was pretty much destroyed.

Will try Pantip tomorrow. In the meantime, I have pulled apart my laptop and disconnected the keyboard to prevent keyboard errors. Picked up a USB wireless keyboard to use for now.

BTW Alesia, you are truly a font of metagaming knowledge for BG! Oh, and congratulations for completing SOA and defeating the fire giants & dragon!

@corey_russell, I was just suggesting that as a stop-gap until you get access to resurrection spells... My only strategic issue with A’lisia so far is her distinct lack of a rez until she reaches ToB.

p.s.
Speaking of chess, this is where our game group does battle... perhaps I’ll see you there.

Ah yes, well using temples right now, I can also use the RoR that Ribald has for sale, but thanks for the tip nevertheless.

As for the chess gaming site, I'll look at it. I currently play chess at the Internet Chess Club - arguable the best web site in the world to play and improve your chess - the world's chess grandmasters play there almost exclusively, and ton of content to improve one's game.

Interesting that there are several keen chess players here. Of course, those who like turn-based strategy games would like both chess and BG. On the other hand, many people find the attention to detail required to be too much.

I am a pretty decent chess player as well, although I don't regularly play nor play against grandmasters (but I do play some pretty good opponents form time to time). When I used to play in tournaments I would win about 80% of the time. However, I tend to get a bit anxious playing chess so usually don't seek games very actively.

Baldur's Gate and chess have several similarities with respect towards preparation and memorization. Though I myself haven't gotten over certain humps with respects to both games. But I tend to play for the thrill and not the computation part.

Cody and band of cleric/mages update:

Last we heard, Cody and band were investigating Umar Hills Temple. Mostly using MMM, and some skeletons to help us on the harder fights. I'm a big fan of doing this quest early now - no liches, no greater mummies, but still good experience. It might be possible to beat the dragon, but it seemed unnecessarily risky with level drain attacks and our pathetic summons. He won't be going anywhere...

We buffed about 6 layers worth and entered the Shade Lord's domain. A bunch of holy smites tilted the fight into our favor and soon victory. We returned to Immesvale and had a short battle with some rangers, who were a bit too quick on their bow fingers -- some hold persons though rendered them harmless. The mayor was happy to hear the news that there won't be any more killings.

I would have liked to work on D'Arnise Keep next, but we need some more AC -- I think Tarnor wants to help us with that. We head to the Temple Sewers, Hanna creeps up with sanctuary to see the enemies and backs off slightly. It took a long time to buff, maybe 10 rounds worth, we were taking no chances. We then started with disabling spells, webs, stinkng cloud, emotion, then some cloudkills and holy smites a few hold persons and Hanna didn't have any more AoE so just started MMMing. This was working well as you can see below.
Image IPB

We kept up the pressure, more holy smites more MMMs, silences and finally Gaius dies, success!
Image IPB
The party took no damage and in fact didn't even get attacked by anything, though we were in visual range. The flail and small shields were direct upgrades, most of the rest will be sold to get some more things, like AC 4 bracers, fortress shield, +1 ring, and finally Breach and Secret Word -- Belle managed to fail to write Secret Word spell twice (she has 19 INT).

Will head to the Keep next.

Pzyas the human Conjurer

Chapter 1
Freeing Jaheira and Minsc, the party made their way through Irenicus' dungeon. Killing an Ogre Mage, Rielev, Ilych, a Cambion, etc and trading with a Djinn. The usual routine. The party didn't need to rest and there were no dangerous situations.
In the upper level they took a shady fellow in the party.

Pzyas, human Conjurer lvl 11

Chapter 1 continued

After escaping the dungeon the party spoke to some residents and tried to make sense of the situation. They rested in a local inn after which they sold and bought trinkets in the local shops. They were made aware of a situation in the central circus tent. With no hindrance they brought Kalah the mad gnome to his demise. Meanwhile Aerie joined the party.
Image IPB
Jaheira made the proposal to go to the slums and lay low a while. Meating Gealen they heard his pricy offer.

In Wierdo's run, one of the few times her party suffered truly serious damage in TOB was when Bruce (Monk) got hit by a Dispel Magic from the Fire Lich (contingency based on it seeing an enemy, I guess, which removed his fire protection)  while he was on top of a lava pool, and at almost the next moment the Fire Lich cast a Time Stop - which did not stop the lava's fire damage! Anyone for some crispy, high-level monk?

Despite my initial anxieties about ToB, Wierdo (main PC, gnome illusionist/thief) managed to get through it all (including Melisssan) with a single scratch (other characters did receive a few whallops, but nothing irrecoverable).

If you like, you can review Wierdo's assault on the fire giants here

Hmm, i'm in the "loose your soul dream" atm and Bhaal seems to be unkillable. I went first to Bhaal, brought him to near death, gave up a con point and spoke to Imoen. She says "it's in my sight..." everytime i speak to her but Bhaal is still unkillable!?

I believe the problem might be that he already passed the point where he would normally give his speech. Try using Ctrl R on him?

Yeah. There are some gotchas in the SCS Yaga Lair- most involve losing your fire resistance somehow.

Imix is a lot tougher as well though he does fall to the Wave as Wierdo noted in his run.

I also think so. There a numerous moments in the game when char started scripted speech at some point. And if appropriate conditions are not in place - game screwed... For example, if you say use PW:Blind on Abazigal then you could hit him indefinitely - he doesn't die as he can't see you and so can't start his pre-dying speech.

Be very careful, it's easy to die there, but you probably knew that. How about greater malison plus either 2x web or 1x web 1x emotion in a spell trigger?

Alessandra v. Tougher Yaga-Shura

Yaga-Shura is down. It was straightforward as expected. Alessandra didn't take meaningful damage and ended with more hit-points then she started with once again.

First, Alessandra nipped Yaga. She then disappeared, buffed a bit,  and waited for him to return.

Tried to take the Mage out quick but Alessandra's love of Critical Missing got in the way...
Image IPB
Image IPB

Alessandra withdrew at this point pursued by the Lietenant Thief. The Deva made a (pointless) appearance here. At this stage, the Deva's most interesting abiltity is invisibility detection via script (hence her summoning while pursued by a Thief). Unfortunately, there is no way to get her to prioritize invisible targets so she didn't really accomplish anything.
Image IPB

Heard "praeses" and darted out of casting range.
Image IPB

Once that threat was handled, Alessandra basically circled around and looked for easy prey while buffed against threats. The Lieutenant Mage seemed vulneable, but kudos to her for timing a Absolute Immunity cast between Carsomyr thwacks.
Image IPB

Swooped in and dropped the Lieutenant Fighter.
Image IPB

The Lietenant Thief's Potions of Invisibility kept her safe for a while.
Image IPB

Dispelled the Mage again. This time she countered with ProMW. The unenchanted Two-Hander finished her.
Image IPB
Image IPB

The Lieutenant Thief's final invisibility potion was quaffed a little to late to help.
Image IPB

Finally, Yaga. Alessandra just went toe-to-toe with him.
Image IPB

And just so it's clear why she could do that...
Image IPB

Roranach's + Hardiness + AoF is buffing the Crushing Resistance. Red Dragon Armor + AoF + Potion of Firebreath the Fire Resistance. Yaga's hammer could do naught but heal Alessandra. Foebane explains the inflated hitpoint total. Yaga's ~50% Magic Damage resistance explains why it is in the upper 200s instead of the 400s.

Alessandra will leave for Amkethran soon.

Best,

A.

Wow so foebane's hits actually stack, that's very interesting and good to know. Changed my opinion on the weapon already.

BTW great job with Yaga Shura. You seem to be plowing through right along.

That could be fun. But by the time C/Ms have Spell Trigger, they can buff up to the point where they can steam-roll vanilla SoA foes if they like. And getting de-buffed needn't be a concern: the vanilla buff removal avenues can be foiled with Spell Immunites and Illusions.

Thanks. That was expected though. For my characters, there are three meaningful hurdles in the trilogy at this point: the Improved Dope Duchal Palace fight, Tougher Abazigal, and Ascension Mel. Aside fom that, there are just places to trip.

If I let Alessandra use the hidey-hole, Abby shouldn't be a problem. I'm still undecided on that though. We'll see.

A.

@Alesia

You'll be fine!

Given your proficiency (in general, rather than about weapons), Ally's capabilities, flair, and that there are many opportunities to use Foebane to buff up HP in Abby's lair, I'm sure that you will prevail. However, I understand any doubts you may have given the outcome of Ashoka's previous run.

Do whatever you need to do to win.
