At one point Alastria was down to 6 levels. Fortunately, the Shade Lord's Level Drain effect was temporary and he couldn't see through Invisibility so she was able to vanish, regroup, pick through her scroll case, and emerge victorious.

He can't see through invisibility? That's a great find! I've always had trouble with the Shade Lord because he likes to use power word stun, and if the character doesn't resist/save(however one avoids it) he's pretty much dead. That's why I always carry the pro-undead scroll when I go in.

PW: Stun doesn't offer a save. However, it doesn't affect characters with more than 90 hitpoint. SI:C, Spell Defelction, etc foil it. Jelly works too.

That's why I always carry the pro-undead scroll when I go in.

That works. I don't like using Pro-Undead though.

In any event, good luck with Stephanie Kittles Shadow!

Best,

A.

Alastria's Journal: Entry 8

Goodies, goodies, goodies! Goodies!

I have SO many goodies now! Let's see...I have a Cloak of Displacement, a Belt of Inertial Barrier, an Efreeti bottle, 2 cases filled with scrolls, a dreamy selection of Potions. And -best of all- you know my Silken Robe? Well it's super-sexy AND super-powerful now. Tee-Hee!

There is a problem though: I'm totally broke again. I spent every copper the Trademeet folks gave me and then some. I'm terrible with money without Immy around to rein me in...I had to slum in a peasant room at the Flagons last night and I could barely afford my evening Golden Sands. I really need another job.

The good thing is I already have a lead. That Brus kid had said there was a guy in the Government District that wanted to hire a mage. I checked it out.

It turns out the Cowled Wizards need someone to track down a murderer. Shrug. I don’t know. I'm no Bounty Hunter- and I'm really not super-enthused about working for the wizards. But I think I’ll do it anyways. I definitely need the gold. And the guy is supposed to be in the Umar Hills. LP says it’s a “delightfully quaint” village. That could be fun. Right Tweedles?

Anyhoo. I WAS really looking forward to some time in the City of Coin. But you know, I'm coinless now. And this place isn't for paupers. So I've gotta go.

So yeah: the Tweeds and I are off again. I'll write again once I get there. Toodles.

The first Titania was charmed by Suna Seni's Mage. Really bad idea to use the only level 5 slot for Ironskin and not for Chaotic Commands, obviously. However, I quickly remade her (with a better roll - same stats, but strength 11) as a totemic druid.

With her new Spirit Animal powers, Irenicus' Dungeon was cleared quickly without anything noticeable. Of course, once you leave the Dungeon as a single class Druid, you already gain access to your first Fire Elemental spell. Anyway, I started with the Circus Tent, using some Forest Beings, True Sight and Spirit Animals for Khala. Next, I decided to do the classic "Totemic Druid against Mencar"-Battle (with the Tent, Titania gained her second fire elemental). First, the Setup, then spreading some Confusion and now the Result.

Nice thing about this beginning, I encountered the Shadow Thieves getting killed by the Vampire at Night and, with selling a few of my potions, had enough Gold for the Belt of Hill Giant Strength before even entering the Slums! Not needing any items in the early game as a totemic druid has some advantages.

Anyway, in the Slums, I started by visiting the Copper Coronet and decided to take a look at their illegal slavery activities. After some battles, Hendak was free and the Copper Coronet was ours. With the Gold I gained from Lethians loot, I managed to buy the Glasses of Identification and the Sling of Seeking +2.

I will propably continue with the Sewers.

Sorry for your loss. Good luck on your new druid however! I think there is a very good strategy to dealing with mages(at least in the early SoA) in general. Ring of Air control. If you can gather up enough gold for just one, they can't do squat against you. (Couple this with the cloak of nondetection of course later on).

This will be a short post because I'm currently playing the game as is

Adventures of Stephanie Kettles

A most dangerous affair, letting her potential allies go in the dungeon of her sworn enemy, Stephanie Kettles explores the terrain and investigates quite thoroughly. The portal key is laced with two traps, as Stephanie found out as she triggered them seperately one by one.

A duergar named Illyich was found carrying acorns. Stephanie had to kill him and all his goons twice because her imbecile controller forgot to save his game while exiting. But he faithfully recreated the drinking of the potion of healing which was unnecessary the second time around, but he did it anyways to stay true.

There was a vampire near the exit. Stephanie was able to blind the vampire and pelt it with melf's magic meteors, however it escaped before dying. What a disappointment. Nevertheless the end was near and at hand, no point in dwelling in the past. Nothing else to this dungeon presented much of a danger except the remaining traps. She escaped and entered the Promenade.

Note: This seems to be one of the more powerful characters I have ever played. I'm having thoughts that I could clear several dungeons at will, but I could just be overestimating my character. We'll see.

@shadow_leech: Well, it's not that I didn't have a way to deal with mages - I had plenty of those, I was just too stupid to use them, because I didn't consider the mage to be a threat (he had used his major damage spells already) - because I usually don't play solo, I didn't had in mind that Charm would end the run. However, I am thankful that I made this mistake early on and not later - I think I won't do it again.

Anyway, Titania went down to the sewers, where some fire elementals and spirit animals started to clean up everything. I entered the Slaver's Hideout while under the effect of my invisibilty ring I obtained from Mencar's rogue buddy. here you can see my strategy, quite typical for any early game situation with the totemic druid - search a safe spot and start summoning. Fire elementals dealt with the trolls. For the next slaver group, I supported my summons with an insect plague.
Went back to Hendak and got my reward. I already don't exactly know what I should do with the money I get, because there are like... 4 items worth buying for a Druid.
Now, it's ambush time! Every time I travelled, I encountered another ambush, so let's start:
Suna Seni. Same thing as with the Slavers, invisibilty and start summoning.
Second Ambush, I had only forest beings left. What you can't see here is that every other enemy is running away because of the Horror bhaalspawn abilty. Had to go to the Docks to bring Renfield to safety and met the Mad Cleric. It's somehow impossible to stop his spellcasting in my game. He just didn't care about a 30-damadge call thunder and lightning and I was held. He did this two times (luckily, I had Ironskin active), until I lost my nerve and called a Spirit Animal - and even then he held me! (he died a few seconds later, though). I went to the Graveyard to deliver a bear and get a new staff.
Ambush 3. No mages here, same tactics as before. This one was on the way to Ribald, where I bought Aegar's hide and one air control ring (maybe I'll buy more of those, later. I don't want to waste level 5 slots for Fairy Dust).
I travelled to trademeet, where I was ambushed again!. Those Bandits never learn it.

Yup, that is why fighter mages are a perennial favorite around here.

Urgo, the Dwarven Beserker, cleared the slavers with no problem. He had to chug a few health potions along the way, but the mirror imaged, stoneskinned mages fell easily to his enraged self. It will be a different story when they start casting Improved Mantle and PfMW. Nevertrheless,  enrage is such an "I win" button its almost ridiculous.I foresee an early trip to WK2 for some spell striking wands--I cant remember if fighters can use them, but am hoping that is the case.

His first purchases were the Reflection Shield and Azureedge. Its a cheap +3 weapon, has ranged abilities,, and is awesome against undead.  He will be using axe and shield until he gets enough pips in two weapon fighting. He is still wearing the +2 Chainmail looted from Illych and of course Balduran's helm.

Urgo had to return  to the Copper to purchase some fire arrows to take down the trolls in the slaver ship. Why does it take 3 arrows to kill the trolls once they are down? Seems unenecessary. Is that otentional on  the part of SCS or a bug?

There are actually 20 fire arrows in a chest in the slaver ship near the trolls (don't know if SCS changes that) - or did you use them all and they were still alive? I think the fact that you need more fire damage than in the vanilla game is intentional.

Here's my recent progress: I haven't really done much yet.

The continuing adventures of Stephanie Kettles:

Stephanie Kettles realizes she forgot to buff DUHM to bash one of the chests back in Irenicus' dungeon. However she blames it on her controller(poor Shadow_leech07 can't get any love). The girdle of bluntness(I think this is the one) is no more.

Amalas and the two bullies just outside of Copper Coronet are dispatched quite easily. Stephanie Kettles hero worships a sorceress named Alastria and therefore sets out to emulate her. Using various buffs(stoneskin, protection from normal weapons, polymorph into Flind, haste, mirror image, ghost armor, shield...did I forget anything?) these bullies at the Copper Coronet are taken out easily. They even start running at the end. Miss Kettles triumphantly continues into the dirty sewers.
Then she pauses for a moment. She thinks to herself "Why am I taking such an unnecessary risk? My controller is being stupid again! What if improved invisibility+nondetection(the spell) doesn't actually stop the hold spells from falling on me? I need to get the shield of harmony ASAP, I can't be trudging in the damp sewers! I need to save the needy!" After her Nalia moment, she heads out to the City Gates.

Battle with Suna Suni(whatever her name is)

Stephanie got real lucky in this fight. She tried to get improved invisibility off, but got hit in the process. Why didn't she buff in a building beforehand? She knew that bandits were around the City Gates! Oh wait, her controller knew, yes the devious Shadow was at work again, giving her a handicap in this battle. She shook her fist at her novice controller. It did not really matter. The mage of the party and the priest did not follow along with Sune Suni. Stephanie got her AC real low(to 1) and the only one that could really hit her was Sune Suni herself. Miss Kettles attempted to blind Sune twice, once with blind and then with glitterdust, it didn't work. She did manage to blind one of her companions however and that is what counts. Stephanie could be seen yelling "You betcha! You betcha! You betcha!" Ah...she has several idols for some reason.

The going was tough for the Sune Suni party, the enemy fighter/mage had cast blur, haste, bhaalspawn ability DUHM, and mirror image. She was going to use polymorph as well. Shhh...she may get angry that she was called the 'enemy fighter/mage'!!! The poor Sune Suni mage and her priest companion were hoping for a trip to some remote island with all that gold Stephanie was hoarding. The mage tried to send a lightning bolt at Stephanie, but it must have hit one of the mirror images, Miss Kettles laughed with a hearty grunt at the end. The cleric shouted

"You laugh like an ogre!"

Stephanie Kettles didn't take this insult too kindly. With one stroke of Arbane, she murdered that pathetic cleric and his female companion. Alright maybe it was two. There were two of them so it took two. Yes that is right.

Back to the Copper Coronet
With arbane's sword, or at least an unidentified sword that is giving Stephanie some unseen power, she knew that perhaps it wasn't necessary to bulk up on potions of insulation(or absorption) and head on down to Trademeet, nevermine her controller was a cheapskape. It was time to deal with a talking sword and the messy thing that is slavery.

Coincidently Stephanie had the foresight to be proficient in short swords.

Off topic for a moment: I don't if it's been mentioned, or if this is widely known...but I recently used the rat form in the cloak of sewers and defender of easthaven offhand with my now retired solo fighter(Hope). This resulted in 110 physical resistances. I just thought it was interesting. Well anyways that's it.

The arrows may still be there; Urgo didnt check all  the chests and barrels. The extra fire dmg required will make trolls irritating, but not too difficult.

Urgo was sent by Maevar to steal an amulet from a priestess. Bashing the chest was no problem for his 19 strength. When he exited the temple (at night) he encountered his first group of SCS bandits, which were easily dispatched, especially after the cleric cast Greater Command which knocked out the entire group other than himself.

I thought it a bit strange that Greater Command would affect the cleric's own party members. In addition, Urgo made his save against the spell, even though he was enraged. I would have thought the msg would have been "spell ineffective" or some such, due to his immunities. I looked in the enrage file, and it was unclear as to whether enrage works against Greater Command. It wasnt specifically spelled out, but it may have been covered by the many immunity effects.

Quick note on Alastria's Game:

Alastria is clearing the De'Arnise Keep now. I've decided to let Nalia come along on roleplaying grounds (seems like they'd hit it off) so those keeping track shouldn't consider this a pure solo anymore. I'm also considering letting Alastria and Imoen duo post Spellhold.

Edit: Actually, scratch that: I ditched Nalia before she did anything important. She helped Alastria get in but that was it. I'm not even sure I'm going to get the quest reward now...

Btw. Alastria is getting better in melee. She just killed 3 Spirit Trolls and 2 regular Trolls in Flind form without disengaging, refreshing her buffs, or taking any damage.

Btw II: Torgal Falls! Chalk up another one for the Disco Queen...

http://i1195.photobu...triaKeep041.jpg

That was a fun quest. Alastria was definitely overpowered for it, but it was still satisfying. Journal upcoming.

Btw III: A word of warning to those considering using Teleport Field in No Reload games. It had occured to me that using Teleport Field indoors could screw something up, but I never actually saw it happen. I just did. Glacias got swept over a wall and I never found him again. It wasn't a game breaker in this case, but beware...

stoneskin, protection from normal weapons, polymorph into Flind, haste,
mirror image, ghost armor, shield...did I forget anything?

Blur. I consider that one important because it gives nice bonuses and the duration is pretty long. It's also a good idea to activate Strength via Minor Sequencer after shifting- followed by DUHM. If you have Vampiric Touch as a Bhaalspawn power, don't forget to use that too. You can activate it while shifted and get a substantial HP boost.

Also, you can skip Haste: the Flind form is already hasted.

So you know, while I mention the Flind Form a lot in the journals, the Spider does most of the dirty work. Just be sure to use hit and run tactics. Spider becomes more important later on as well since it's APR gets up to 8 with Improved Haste while the Flind only reaches 4. Take a Phantom Blade via Contingency if you run into enemies that require enchanted weapons.

Have fun Polymorphing!

Titania, now level 13 totemic druid.

After talking to the important people in trademeet, Titania entered the Druid Grove, summoned her army and fought some Trolls and Spiders until she met the Shadow Druids for the first time. It was quite obvious that they were no match for the powers of a REAL druid, though. Insect Plague was enough to shut them down completely. After a short fight with another group of Myconids (Aegars Skin means I don't have to use a lvl5 slot for CC here, so that's nice), the final group of Shadow Druids was defeated with some thunder and lightning.

Faldorn was, of course, not able to cast any spells because summoning spirit animals is a thing you can do very fast, and they just destroyed her in a matter of seconds. So I gained another new Staff, the Staff of Thunder and Lightning, which might very well be pretty useful (no problem spamming those charges since I'll get another two of them anyway).
Back there I met Ithafeer, and she was surrounded and Killed. Her allies were rather weak.
For the first Druid Grove quest, I summoned again and defeated the Troll Shaman and the army of rats. I also entered the Troll Hill for some extra experience, though I don't really need the spear (CC and DW are here for that exact purpose).
Back in Trademeet, everybody was happy (and I bought the +3 club + cloak of displacement), Titania entered a crypt and defeated some Skeleton Warriors. I also finished the second Druid Grove Quest for now. Chaos was unable to do anything before its death. Too bad. Now, I've got Joloon - which means: More Summons! And this one has Cloak of Fear, too. Nice, nice. Also, again, another immune to normal weapons summon.

Quickly travelled back to the Government District, helped Jan out and saved Viconia.

I have trouble with my inventory. I don't want to cheat in a bag of holding, but I really think about it. However, I think I can stop picking up some of the loot since I don't need any money right now (and only Ust'Natha has some stuff that I really want for SoA).

Good work with Titania Enuhal!

I soloed an Avenger Druid through a Tactics (parts) and Ascension install a number of years ago. I found it to be an enjoyable solo and have had a fondness for Druids ever since. I'm very pleased to see a Totemic doing so well in a No Reload run.

I hope Titania keeps it up!

Thanks! Always nice to see another person appreciating the Druid class. Totemic Druids are actually my favorite class and kit to play - it's like playing a Necromancer in Diablo 2 - you can just stay back and watch how the battle evolves, sometimes support your summons, sometimes use a few offensive spells - rather relaxing, even though it gets rather difficult with ToB (I am looking at you, Draconis and Amelyssan), and my first character to successfully complete the triology no-reload was a Druid, too (not solo, though).

Alastria is really awesome, by the way. I love the concept, especially your use of Teleport Field.

Alesia, I think that polymorph self has been greatly overlooked. The forms have proven to be very useful...such as dealing with traps, killing trolls...etc. It's efficient, and it saves gold(you don't need to buy a fire weapon to kill trolls because flind does it for you). I don't really use hit and run tactics ATM because all my current enemies are weak, but I plan to most definitely. I can't wait till I can test out that rat form+defender of easthaven with simulacrum. With that combination we literally have ourselves a decent tank(on par with I guess...a mordy sword?). Toss in some potions for simulacrum...we have an even better tank.

I guess we're all just waiting for triggers now

Great work Enuhal. I have never played a Druid and will be interested to see how yours turns out.

Maevar

The only significant challenge for Urgo in the Maevar quests was Rayic Gerthas, whose protections were formidable. Urgo simply waited them out--3 times--before he could bring the mage to his knees--slipping downstairs when enrage ran out. Maevar and gang fell rather easily, although Urgo did have to chug a few health pots along the way---backstabs hurt, but with 128 hp, Urgo can survive at least one, possibly two.

The Suna Seni and the sick man groups went fine as well, with a few health pots. The nice thing about a fighter is that chugging health pots doesnt take up a spell round, and one can attack immediately afterwards.

After completing the Montaron quest, and selling the goods, Urgo had enough cash to pay off the Shadow Thieves and did so, The +2 ring of protection was welcome but the Amulet of power was useless.

He then paid a visit to the Rakshasha in the sewers for a fine polymorph cloak--the mustard jelly form may come in handy when his enrage wears off in the midst of a mage fight, and the +1 AC from the cloak was a welcome addition to his gear. As a dwarf, his saves are already great.

Trademeet then needed his help. On his way, he sold everything in his bag to buy the Stonefire axe from Bernard. He told Cern to meet him in the Grove, and barely survived his first troll encounter. The purple fire from the Spirit Trolls stacked on top of him and he had to run away and drink an invisible pot so that he could heal. This separated the trolls, and he was able to deal with them 2-3 at a time.

The three groups of Shadow Druids were no match for his enraged Stonefire axe, and he challenged Faldorn himself, and fought her naked and enraged with his bare hands. When she fell unconscious he used his innate Bhaalspawn power: Larloch's minor drain to finish her off. It was a very satisfying fight.

He then took a cue from Alastria's journal, and killed the Djinni's at Trademeet, thereby becoming the Hero of the town. He will return to Intafeer (if she is still there) later to buy potions. With his earnings from Trademeet he bought the belt of inertial barrier.

Right now he is deep in Naila's keep--where he has encountered more trolls that in any other game I have ever played. Is there a special SCS troll spawn regime for fighters in the Keep? It sure seems that way--he has encountered troll groups where I have never seen groups before--such as in the hallway just beyond the library, and in the room just before Galacias. Large groups too---six to eight trolls. Unusual.

The lightning trap on the door leading to Galacias (sp?) almost killed him--one more richochet and he would have been finished. I didnt realize it was a lightning trap or he would have buffed. It was a very close call.

It's a good spell. It's a killer in SCS since the Spider's Poison Damage got a nice bump and it still doesn't offer a save. Also, the Bear got a huge speed boost which makes it great for fleeing or shuttling heavy loot with a weak character.

The forms have proven to be very useful...such as dealing with traps

I assume you've figured out how to open chests in Jelly form? If not, try clicking your Special Ability button just after attempting to open something. For some reason, the chest will pop open then.

It's efficient, and it saves gold

It gives you a lot of utility out of a single level 4 slot. I still see it as something hard to budget for with a conventional sorcerer. But Alastria's build works and it can defintely help Mages.

I'm really looking forward to using it with my Cleric/Illusionist, Ao.

I don't really use hit and run tactics ATM because all my current enemies are weak, but I plan to most definitely.

Hit and run is for the Spider. Spreading out your attacks allows you to maximize poison damage. And since it's Hasted and gets initiative, it works out well. It's also fun to melee with the Spider in a Teleport Field.

I can't wait till I can test out that rat form+defender of easthaven with simulacrum. With that combination we literally have ourselves a decent tank(on par with I guess...a mordy sword?). Toss in some potions for simulacrum...we have an even better tank.

Rats like Phantom Blades...

Yup. That's when the fun really begins....

Cheers,

@ Angiras. I'm glad to see Urgo making progress. Note Well though- the Cloak of the Sewers Jelly is different from the Polymorph Self one. It does NOT offer 100% Magic Resistance. I'd hate to see Urgo go Jelly against a mage and then get slaughtered.  For what it's worth, the Cloak Jelly is 100% resistant to Missle Damage.

@Enuhal. Thanks for your comments on Alastria. She's been a fun character to play. I'm glad others are enjoying her as well. :)

Yea I realized that after checking the file subsequent to my post--but thanks for the heads up.

Urgo, being...a berserker...true to character rushed Torgal and friends in the Keep. Big Mistake. He got surrounded by trolls, malaisoned, and caught in a web spell field. Fortunately, one of the Spirit Trolls cast Greater Command, which knocked out the Yuanti mages, and the webs were affecting all the trolls as well as Urgo. Still it was touch and go, because he couldnt move (due to webs and the surrounding trolls) and had to chug health potions every time they were up. Finally,he hacked his way out of the trolls and ran back to the previous level to rest---after killing the Spirit Troll and Yuanti mage that followed. Then it was simply a matter of cleaning up. Torgal died first--and was amazingly easy after Tactics Torgal.  He is now the proud owner of the Flail of Ages +3, and  has one pip proficiency for it and the Defender of Easthaven, when he can afford it.

I thought you'd catch it. But I would have felt terrible if your accomplished Berserker met his end in Jelly form. It isn't a dignified way for a Zerker to go...

He is now the proud owner of the Flail of Ages +3, and  has one pip proficiency for it and the Defender of Easthaven, when he can afford it.

Congrats Angiras!

Best,

A.

I think the fact that you need more fire damage than in the vanilla game is intentional.

It is. I opted not to install that component because it sounded annoying more than anything else...

It might well be. It's a bit experimental, actually, and I haven't played with it myself. The thought behind it was: in practice, troll near-death is purely an annoyance, but by raising the damage requirement it might become an interesting tactical issue. Does that actually happen? I don't know.

(I lurk on these threads periodically to get feedback. The obvious caveat: SCS isn't built with solo runs in mind, though obviously I don't mind if you use it that way!)

It's good to hear from you DMWW!

I'd like to congratulate you on a fine piece of work. And offer my thanks.

SCS has enhanced the adventure while preserving the feel of the original game and granting the player many degrees of freedom. Well done. And again, thanks.:kissing:

Makes sense. And to be clear, my comment wasn't meant as a critique. I just didn't feel it would enhance this particular run- mostly because I envisioned Alastria whiffing away in Flind Form over Near Death Trolls...

Of course, I and others appreciate the fact that SCS is so customizable: I've been able to tailor the adventure to my characters needs and that has opened role playing avenues that wouldn't have been available otherwise. Again: thanks!

I'll be sure to try the Troll component in a future run.

Cheers,

A.

Understood. I'm having fun with it solo for now. And I'm glad I have your blessing. I look forward to a full party run soon.
