Edit; sorry to see your run end that way.

Vayler, LG human male cavalier.
Travelling with Yoshimo, Viconia, Edwin and Korgan.

Anarg has been dealt with. Baron Metrich too, Yoshimo eagerly storing two arrows of dispelling. Yoshisnares kill or stun a group of assassins, and Tyrianna has jumped out of her skin went upstairs to check and there are two of her - this quest is just so bugged.

We wait patiently, Yoshimo laying two more snares as a precaution. As feared, the uncle fails to turn up. I sigh, and set off to deal with Firkraag on the way.

We are attacked by wolfweres, Yoshimo joining in with his katana. I scowl at him, realising he has switched arrows by mistake and used the dispelling and +3 sets we planned to use against Firkraag.

We buff and talk to Firkraag, deciding no snares or summons. He goes hostile so we attack.

I have to run away, as does Yoshimo. He switches to arrows. We have cast doom, lower resistance, bolt of glory and called up some summons. Korgan has glugged a healing potion, and Edwin used three sets of magic missiles to injure the dragon.

Viconia has to run, as does Korgan. A berserker and an ariel servant delay Firkraag and as we all attack I land a light blow.
Image IPB

Maybe his treasure will make up for the armour and shield the Order can no longer allow me to use.

Vayler. Cavalier 11. Firkraag.
Korgan. Berserker 11. Torgal.
Viconia. Cleric 12. Adratha.
Edwin. Conjurer 12. Iron Golem.
Yoshimo. Bounty Hunter 15. Mae'Var.

RIP Ayakanya! Playing a wild mage without reloads looks highly entertaining and much more challenging due to its inherently random nature.

I was rather amused by Ayakanya's demise. I only regret that I didn't get to play with 9th level Wish.

Really enjoying the no-reloads by everyone. My one and only complaint of BG2/ToB is the absolute necessity of magic. All these end game fights can only be won with mages and spell. By the time you get to ToB the game has become a bottleneck. I hate that. I wish more options were available outside of spells.

I've never done it myself, but looking at posts by others magic is clearly not essential to complete the game - even for a solo player. For instance the bounty hunter traps can make things look ridiculously easy (at least when done by Alesia_BH!). GWW allows fighter types to take on all comers.

The problem is not how to dispose of the opposition as much as how to defend yourself on the way - this is where you really need to know in advance what tactics enemies will use.

Ud13;

@C Barchuk, The exact opposite is true for me and I tend to deliberately avoid playing the fighter classes because I find them too easy... bordering on boring.

Imoen spent a day learning new spells & everyone claimed their gear from the storage lockers before heading downstairs for the final Jail break- battle. My standard run to the corner tactics didn’t completely fool Irenicus this time (an upgrade?) but he lost interest in us once I cloaked and the other inmates kept him occupied whilst we dealt with our Id monsters.

Image IPB  Image IPB  Image IPBImage IPB  Image IPB  Image IPB

The opening rounds:
Rounds 1-4; Do’Dad, Alyssia & Amber dispatched themselves whilst Imoen & Haer’dalis used ‘Skull Trap’ against the casters.
Rounds 5-10; We all tossed out adds... Just to draw out Ickys’ fire more than any real expectancy of them doing much.
The mid rounds:
I waited until seeing his demon summoning gate before Do’Dad put-up ‘Protection From Evil, 10' Radius’ and Alyssia then ran in and made quick work of it.
Finishing rounds:
I broke stealth to heal Aphril and Amber wasted 4 of our precious “Arrows of Dispel” trying to drop his shields... Imoen used her wand to layer the floor in clouds.

Irenicus finally killed Tiax & Aphril just as Imoen, Do’Dad & Amber started getting through his defences... it’s all over and we both know it so he ordered Yoshimo to lead the remaining peons in a suicidal rear guard action.

From Brynnlaw to the Underdark:
After selling off the excess (Imoen takes the opportunity to recharge her wand) we decided to go sailing but the Githyanki ambushed us and a confused Alyssia/ Do’Dad blocks the scripted invasion, crashing the game.

Re-load 1;

I sent Alyssia/ Do’Dad charging over the gangway against the pirates whilst the rest of us supported them with range weapons and spells, this unexpected bravado obviously takes the Gith by surprise and results in their defeat... crash!

Re-load 2;

This time I just stay cloaked and let nature take its course... I cleared Sahuagin City with extreme prejudice, winning me a “Rod of Lordly Might” for Amber (sword) and the head for a wave halberd that I’m unlikely to even assemble never mind use but on the up side, every one gained a level before climbing down to the Underdark.

With your party ussnorway I'd be tempted to have Amber GWW Wave against fire elementals, Imix, efreeti and salamanders. Even a case for pause on enemy gone. But then I've never used Amber and appreciate there are very few places where this might be justified (Abazigal and planar sphere near the engine room are two that spring to mind).

That would be nice however Amber is a dual Fighter-Thief and not a multi so she can’t get GWW.

Her available HLA are Set Spike Trap, Set Exploding Trap, Avoid Death, Evasion, Greater Evasion, Set Time Trap, Use Any Item, Scribe Scrolls, Alchemy & Assassination in what I consider to be best to worse order. She fills the scouting/ thieving party needs and I keep her at range even though her Fighting skills give her better than average melee survivability.

Ah, missed that bit.

Vayler, LG human male cavalier. Travelling with Yoshimo, Viconia, Edwin and Korgan.

Cromwell has forged some red dragon armour, and I have equipped Carsomyr. A mimic and golem in Umar are despatched then we investigate the Umar Witch project.

Abandoned shadow temple ruins.
Carsomyr, Stonefire and iMoD are backed up with the crimson dart and arrows +1. We kill a horde of shadows, THEN fiddle with a mirror causing a few more to appear.

I get two sets of flamestrike at a ritual statue I can never remember the right answers here but my fire resistance, magic resistance and armour take the edge off it.

We feel confident as we enter one room, with Yoshimo blocking the door. Viconia gets a whack and has to step back just as I am stunned. Luckily for me she had fired up turn undead and they get thrown against a wall, taking Korgan with them thought this was worth a picture.
Image IPB

I didn't see what stunned me, and am left wondering if it was Viconia with her turn undead ability. Maybe I will never know.

Once more I decide to play semi-fair (no snares, starting summons or force attack), buffing and talking to our next enemy. But first, our preparations.

I will use Carsomyr, with AoF, PfE and DUHM. Remove fear on party.
Kagain has Stonefire and is enraged.
Viconia has FoA main/iMoD, chaotic command, AoF, bless, DUHM, Righteous magic.
Edwin has stoneskin, red fire shield, ghost armour, 2mm sequencer, monster summoning II on see enemy. Haste on party and strength on Yoshimo.
Yoshimo has Dragonslayer and Ilbratha mirror images.

Korgan takes a hit (16), I return the compliment (25). Viconia casts doom (magic resistance) then adds a FoA critical (36+1+1+1) as Yoshimo gets swiped (16 but dragon takes 14?) and runs. Edwin has lowered magical resistance by 22% as Viconia takes a wing buffet (13 but dragon takes 15?). The Magic Missile sequencer hits (32) as Yoshimo runs to keep a chaos spell to himself (he resists).

Korgan gets a wing buffet (14 but dragon takes 12). I take a hit (15) as Viconia tries and succeeds with her second doom. Edwin casts another magic missile (13) as Viconia is malisoned, and Yoshimo becomes the target again (24) so runs.

Thax runs after him so Viconia switches to sunfire bullets and Edwin aims another magic missile. Korgan is hit and I realise I forgot to enrage him, silly mistake as he's now level 3. Yoshimo has doubled back to attack from behind but the dragon has stopped within range of Carsomyr.
Image IPB

Viconia has lesser restoration memorised so restores Korgan, meaning we must rest before continuing. She switches back to iMoD main/FoA as Yoshimo takes Daystar, then we re-buff and re-sequence and re-contingency.

Again, Korgan has forgotten to enrage but realises and does so before attacking. In this time I have wounded Shadow Patrick and Viconia has killed him, and Edwin has sequenced the shadow altar. As Korgan attacks the shade lord Yoshimo uses Daystar.
Image IPB

Korgan and I synchronise the remaining two enemies.
Image IPB

Cromwell forges the shadow dragon scale into armour suitable for Yoshimo, then we check on Tyrannia Morningdale as we depart. The two of her are still OK, so we go shopping instead of protecting her some more. The robe of Vecna and Sensate amulet are complemented with various spells for Edwin.

Reputation now 15 so need to think about whether I can get to the slayer transition in time or if I need to do something more drastic to keep Korgan, Viconia and Edwin onside. I decide we should inform Aran Linvail we are ready to find Imoen, and off we go with Yoshimo fully equipped.

Vayler, LG human male cavalier. Travelling with Viconia, Edwin and Korgan. Yoshimo is replaced with Imoen.

At Brynnlaw we have to fight off Valen, Del and Parisa. Then help a few people and obtain a wardstone from Perth the Adept. As we near Spellhold Yoshimo uses the gemjump spell CTRL/J to leap to a lower level and investigate a crate, finding it contains 1gp I kept meaning to investigate this, finally remembered with the cheat keys enabled.

Yoshimo is wistful as we enter Spellhold. He asks us to stay still, lays three snares, rests and hides. Then he wanders past the co-ordinator and lays some more snares. He returns to say he has found Imoen, but that we should rest again before proceeding.

Imoen.
It has cost all my Bhaal powers and the loyalty of Yoshimo, but Imoen is back. We hand her some equipment and rest before investigating the Spellhold maze.

It's not long before we have a bag for life holding, the hand of Dace, Doomplate armour, a ring of free action and a crystal shard.

The sight of Bodhi sends me into a rage, turning into the slayer. My companions are a safe distance away fortunately.

Boots of speed and boots of the north are dispensed, then we buff before leaving. Lonk agrees to let us out, and we convince the other prisoners that they should help defeat Irenicus.

Viconia casts sanctuary when Yoshimo backstabs her, and he switches to Edwin who cowers behind stoneskin and fire shield. With Irenicus gone and Yoshimo dead we make our escape with the aid of Saemon Havarian. Then we backtrack to investigate the final room in the Asylum.

Saemon Havarian somehow escapes from a boarded ship while we are dragged to a sahuagin city and forced to choose a side. We help the king, dooming the city as a result.

Lilo, a kensai (at least for now), has graduated from BG1 and commenced her journeys in Amn.  She avoided the most dangerous encounters in the dungeon (elemental plane, ogre mage, battle mage), but still had a couple of nervous moments.
- coming back out of Irenicus' quarters I forgot about the traps by the entrance and took a 62 HP spike up the backside.  Fortunately Lilo was only slightly damaged at the time and survived easily enough, but that was luck rather than judgement.
- I should probably have avoided the duergar mage in the furnace room entirely, but normally I manage to kill him before he gets a spell off.  This time I misjudged where he would be and had to save against horror.  Lilo might have survived that if she had run in the right direction, but with her poor kensai AC she would very likely have been killed.

Her kensai abilities allowed her to one-shot all the mephit portals within a round or so.  Even in that time the mephits did quite a bit of damage, so she was glad to be able to dispose of them so quickly.
Image IPB

On exit from the dungeon she got her 9th level and 11 more HPs taking her up to a healthy 108.

Are you guys saying that its possible to kill Demogorgan as well as any of the late ToB boss fights without casting a single spell?

People do solo runs as a fighter/thief, although I guess they can still cast spells via Use Any Item.

Define spells. Greater whirlwind with Carsomyr that dispels on hit, or Foebane which effectively does a Larloch drain in addition to other damage? There are examples of other solo no-reloads, e.g. a berserker. A set of potion buffs (strength, resistances, regeneration, speed, immunities) is an obvious alternative to spells.

I ran into Draconis with a cavalier recently (multiplayer session), and with the wrong equipment and tactics the cavalier failed several times. Have experimented since and can drop him with the right weapon, DUHM and GWW. Adding in potions etc should make it safer to do.

Update for Lilo, kensai.

After the horrors of the dungeon she was looking forward to a relaxing day at the circus, but had to deal with a few problems first.  Without any armour she accumulates damage fast, but hands it out even faster - as Kalah found.

On to the Copper Coronet where she first oversaw a change of management and then ventured underneath the city to deal with a slaver problem.  On the way she got to level 10 while acquring a nice new sword.  She also picked up some good equipment from the Chosen of Mystra thieves that attempted to block her.

Lilo's confrontation with Captain Haegan showed she is not the only one that hits hard.  However, moving back into the sewers provided her with the space to deal with him.  The other guards there were no problem and the flail with additional fire damage donated by the thieves came in handy against the trolls, who are immune to non-weapon damage for some reason.

The slaver mages are quite tricky, partly because they stick closely together.  Lilo's tactics were to shuttle backwards and forwards through the exit in order to avoid spells.  There was one mistake here when I was caught in two minds about whether to run or equip Lilarcor to protect against a charm and ended up doing nothing (but saving).

After reporting back to Hendak Lilo's reputation was up to 19.  Normally I wait until it's 20 before purchasing anything, but compromised my principles a bit by doing a bit of shopping here (such as ring of air control) to make it safer to travel elsewhere than the slums.  Lilo also wanted an invisibility ring for the same reason and tried to persuade Brennan to give it up.  Normally I find he's quite amenable to that, but this time he took an invisibility potion immediately and showed his displeasure.
Image IPB
Lilo immediately ran downstairs, where all but the mage followed.  A bit more movement around the inn exit and she got Pooky on its own outside and beat it to death.  Back inside she suffered a much smaller backstab from Brennan, then ran round until he was slightly separated from the others and turned on him - kai quickly finishing him off before he even tried to run.  The others were finished off with hit and run tactics before Lilo went back for the mage and got him to waste his spells on the staircase.

Now well prepared for travel she went up to the temple and undertook the fallen paladin quest to get reputation up to 20.  Naturally, being prepared meant the Suna Seni ambush was very late triggering and it was not until she had completed that quest that the ambush occurred.  The mage fell to her first blow without even the need for potion of firebreath and the rest of them weren't much more difficult.

Not tempted to sort out the critical hits by grabbing the ioun stone in Pai'Na's retreat? Potion of freedom and a scroll of poison resistance should work (not sure if you can't grab it without having to kill all the spiders. Or a couple of invisibility potions.

Vayler, LG human male cavalier. Travelling with Viconia, Edwin, Korgan and Imoen.

The Underdark.
A drow war party donate full plate armour for Viconia, Korgan and myself plus drow chain for Imoen. Summons help against mind flayers, then we help a Swirf village, free Vithal and help him.

Western exit.
We arrive here by mistake not, but kill a group of demon knights. The Kuo-Toa prince is no threat but takes five times as long to die as we expect. We grab some of the abundant blood, not really sure why but it just seems too important to waste.

Southern Tunnel.
Good job we have buffed; I take on an elder orb while the party quickly kill another beholder and then help me tear out an eye-orb, killing the orb as a result. We turn to leave but Korgan uses enrage and a cloak of mirroring to clear the area.

Eastern Tunnel.
Simyaz wants us to clear the area, but is not happy when we summon a trio of skeleton warriors to start with the illithid he is battling. After a brief rest the use of haste and bless sees more skeleton warriors clear the illithid, allowing us to deal with umber hulks in relative safety. We leave with the blood of an elder brain.

Simyaz is waiting for us outside but is of little consequence. A silver dragon, Adalon, has a job for us and transforms us into drow. Her parting words are to keep an eye on time as the drow will see through the illusion unless we keep feeding them minor distractions.

I did consider it and I agree it would be good tactics.  I've resisted making use of a potion of freedom, though there's not much logic to that, so I should probably get on with it.

Ud14;

@Gate70, I get Viconia (romance interrest) & I’m enjoying reading about the adventure anyway, whatever the reasoning but why is your paladin willing to put up with the dwarf is what I really don’t understand? :innocent:

The Underdark:

Image IPB

Image IPB Image IPB

Ormaline picked up ‘Greater Malison’, ‘Animate Dead’ & ‘Death Fog’ as her new spells from the level up and decided to unlock the first Prison Globe because she wants the “Albruil” for poison immunity before venturing into the dreaded Kuo-Toa Dungeon. Before I can safely do that I needed to clear out some fighting room so Alyssia & Do’Dad started a tag competition;
First the three different elemental portals because they are the easiest, arriving one at a time then we headed north (cloaked)  and cleared out the Myconids/ Flayers... experience has tort me not to attempt the Drow until last in case the battle escalates.

The empresses’ new clothes:

Image IPB

Image IPB

Image IPB

Killing the Drow consists of two key elements;
Important buffs = Do’Dad puts up ‘Blade Barrier’ and Ormaline puts ‘Protection From Acid’ on Alyssia/ Do’Dad.

Alyssia/ Do’Dad charge into melee against the priestess first while Ormaline drops ‘Death Fog’ on the area (keeps them from casting any annoying spells)... Mop up with range weapons as required.

In keeping with the holiday spirit it’s got to be...

Fish for dinner:

Image IPB

Image IPB

Kuo-Toa are immune to Clouds... ‘Cloud kill’, ‘Death Fog’ etc just ignore what the spell description says but ‘Blade Barrier’/ ‘Skull Trap’ makes short work of them.

strategy = we placed about 9 ‘Skull Trap’ door stops in the passage behind us because these guys are effectively thieves & just love attacking from the rear. Next we rest/ put up ‘Blade Barrier’/ ‘True Seeing’ and throw caution to the winds, no mess, no fuss and nothing but net.

Do’Dad isn’t quite level 14 yet so the un-dead room makes me a little anxious... we’ll leave our heroine setting traps and come back tomorrow.

Lilo is still going, though still needing a bit of luck.  She is now at kensai level 12 and starting to think about dualling.
Her recent adventures seem to have been centered around ambushes.  First up was saving Renfeld.  A critical on the mage here meant no need for potion of firebreath again.  After returning Renfeld Lilo was given a task by Xzar.  First off he jumped in and out of a house to clear it of 2 ghasts a golem and a couple of mages.  Xzar eventually got the bird, but didn't appreciate it.

Paid the money for Gaelen, which also got Lilo up to level 11, though regrettably can't use the amulet of power for the time being.  As an alternative scraped together money to buy the negative token from Lathander temple.  Then used Lilarcor to protect against domination by the vampire that killed Mook at the docks.  Lilo didn't rest after reporting back to Aran Linvail and nearly paid for that when walking into another ambush.  However, Lilarcor (charm/confusion) and Arbane (hold) protected him against spells and he was able to beat off the assault at the cost of about 10 standard healing potions (not used any extra-healing up to this stage).

Investigated the tombs at the graveyard.  Most no problem taking advantage of Lilo's good weapon speed, but I hadn't remembered the crypt king casting horror and had to make a save there.  Tried out Lilo's dual-wielding prowess with a newly purchased staff mace on Llynis then went down below the graveyard.  Following Gate70's advice Lilo used a potion of freedom to clear the spiders and traps and then did the quest for Pai'na to retrieve Spider's Bane.  Before returning it Lilo buffed with potions of speed and giant strength to try and kill Pai'na before she could get away, but she disappeared instantly after the conversation, so the potions were wasted.  However, Kitthix, web-sack wand and the green ioun stone were still a nice haul.

To retrieve a bit of value from the potions she added invulnerability and attacked the southern dungeons with protection from dual-wielded Arbane and negative token (plus Lilarcor when facing vampire).  Got to level 12 there and also used the remainder of her standard healing potions on trap damage.

Lilo was ambushed yet again going to the City Gates on her way to help Nalia.  She had improved invisibility available this time, but that wore off while facing the final mage and Lilo was lucky that magic resistance kicked in against a flame arrow when she had only 53 HPs left.  I was amazed that the mage had lasted as long as she did, but that was more understandable when you look at what weapon Lilo was wielding:
Image IPB
one of the things they could helpfully do with the enhanced edition would be to default back to your previous weapon when you change rather than to fists!

Travelling on Lilo intended to rest at the City Gates, but was faced by Parisa and a shadow thief on arrival.  Unfortunately the merchant was also there and in the chaos of the fight she didn't take proper advantage of him.  With HPs still low from the previous ambush I decided to bite the bullet and use a couple of extra-healing potions (though actually the back-stab when it came only did 23 HPs anyway).  There was also a first outing for Kitthix who immediately proved her worth by webbing Parisa.

Lilo will now dare the spirit trolls at the De'Arnise Hold while trying to get up to level 13 and dual to thief.
