Quick note on Alastria's Game:

Alastria's progress has jumped ahead of her journals. She's now battling through the Shadow Thieves Compound.

Her preferred form in the Den of Thieves? Mustard Jelly. With the Belt of Inertial Barrier, she gets 100% Resistance to Magic, Piercing Damage, and Missile Damage. She also gets Backstab Immunity and can of course foil traps. It would suffice to say that the Thieves aren't having fun with her...

http://i1195.photobu...striaDen041.jpg

She's looking forward to getting Sequencer. Then she'll be able to go immune to Magic and Missile Weapons in a 3 layer Telefield...

Current Book: Level 14 (upcoming additions in italics, level to be acquired in parentheses)

Level 1: Blindness, Chill Touch, Protection from Evil, Shield, Spook
Level 2: Blur, Mirror Image, Resist Fear, Strength, Web
Level 3: Melf's Minute Meteors, Non Detection, Remove Magic, Vampiric Touch
Level 4: Minor Sequencer, Polymorph Self, Stoneskins, Teleport Field
Level 5: Phantom Blade (15), Shadow Door, Spell Immunity, Spell Shield,
Level 6: Globe of Invulnerability, Improved Haste, Tenser's Transformation (15)
Level 7: Sequencer (15), Spell Turning
Level 8: Spell Trigger (16)

Titania, level 13 Totemic Druid.

Titania entered Imnesvale and talked to some of the people. She acquired a rare gem and brought some swords and beer to a group of teenagers, then moved on to fight a Killer Mimic and some Umber Hulks. No problem here, Spirit Animals and Fire Elementals are more than enough to deal with them.
After bringing Madulfs Message back and entering Merellas Hut, the Temple Ruins were entered. A fire Elemental distracted a horde of Shadows while Titania dealt with the mirror.
Down there, the lone druid met some Warrior Skeletons. I used some protection from fire spells for certain situations (especially all the traps). The regular groups here include Bone Golems. Had to retreat and rest after the first one, because my fire elementals were stupid. The Second One was not a big problem. Bone golems are really one of the few enemies in Chapter 2 (not counting liches, dragons and high level mages) that can actually destroy fire elementals (aside from Trolls).

Now, it came down to making the right buff choices for the battle with the Shadow Lord. I abandoned Ironskin for Chaotic Commands and used Death ward. This was obviously a wise choice, because the Shadow Lord started with Symbol: Stun and used a Finger of Death - without Deathward, this run would be over now. Finally, after he actually defeated my first fire elemental and stopped my second summoning spell, the Spirit Animals and a charge of Titania's Staff defeated the evil Lord, and Imnesvale was safe.

Urgo level16 Berserker

After speaking with the Cowled Wizards, Urgo went to Umar Hills to find a ranger named Valygar. He found some mimic blood for a mage, helped settle a dispute between the town and some minotars, and found a note by Mazzy Fenton. He then took Valygar back to the Slums, to open the Sphere. Valygar was left at the entrance.

Time for the Temple Ruins. But first he made a quick trip to WK1, to pick up some potions of superior healing from bashable chests, shelves, etc. Left the Statues alone. All the undead in the Tempre Ruins fell easily to Azureedge, including the two lichs. Urgo had no way to damage the Mordy swords they summoned however, and had to run from them. He paid his respects to the Shadow Dragon, but left him alone for the time being.

The Shade Lord was a real problem for Urgo. His constant Fingers of Death and Chromatic Orbs were no real threat, but his blade barrier and melee capabilities were formidable, as were his protections, which Urgo had no way to dispell. Urgo tried to use the ranged capabilities of the Azureedge, but everytime he did, the Shade Lord cast PW: Blind, which forced him into melee range, and the range of the Blade Barrier. In melee range his attacks were dealing 50+ dmg each hit, and Urgo had to play ring around the altar while healing. I didnt think he was going to survive this encounter when he used up his last healing potion--and he had quite a few to start with--and after drinking it was 3/4 in the red. But finally the Shade Lord's protections ran out and Durgo slew him---with 2/138 hp left!! Whew!

This does not bode well fror Urgo's chances against higher level and more formidable SCS casters and foes.  Up to this point, he has been relying mostly on enrage and his decent AC and Thaco to survive. Time to gather some coin and start buying potions; which however are easily dispellable. Though I am typically reluctant to use them, he may have to resort to scrolls of magic protection to survive later in the game. Somehow, I feel they were put there specifically for non-caster fighter types.

Congrats on beating the Shade Lord. Fighter types have limited capabilities when dealing with magic damage. Mages get protection against weapons in various forms, but fighters unfortunately only get a single HLA which grants only fifty percent, and a smattering of items and potions.  The game really was not designed with the solo fighter in mind in any case(at least a no reload fighter in insane). That is my opinion though.

Agreed.
I dont really expect him to survive this no-reload, but I want to see how far he can go. Btw, he is running on Hard not Insane. I think its "possible" for a fighter type to solo no-reload the game, but not very probable. It would require every bit of cheese that can be squeezed out. The simulacrum helm, cloak of mirroring, and the few items that grant stoneskin, improved haste, and backstab immunity will be important--as will the Defender of Eashaven, and perhaps the Crom Faer.

Btw, I have decided to take another cue from Alastria's playbook and grant Urgo a personalized amulet, called Urgo's Opener, which gives +1 to saves, 5% magic resistance, and Knock once per day--for unbashable chests.

Alastria's Journal: Entry 9

Well, the Tweedles and I made it to the Umar Hills. Delightfully quaint? Cha! You got that one wrong LP. The place was a cess! Townies disappearing. Everybody paranoid. And guess what? On top of all that, the people were fat! I’m never going back there: no way, no how. But so long as I was there, it made sense to set things right. So I did. I saved the village, and I even gave the mayor’s wife some dieting tips. I‘m such a heroine!

Yeah. So here's how it all went. I arrived in the Umar Hills in the morning. And as I said, total cess. Very disappointing. Anyhoo. I crashed at this grody wildernes inn and started investigating.

I quickly learned that Shadows were to blame for the disappearaces and discovered their super-secret shadow hideout. Then I killed them. All of them. Don't think it was easy though.

It didn't seem so bad at first. When I approached the lair, I ran into a whole bunch of Shadows. But there
was, like, this mirror nearby. that let me kill them all super-fast. Pretty convenient right? Then I had to fight through these Shadows and Skeleton Warriors. That wasn't too tough either. I just put the beats on them in my Flindy form. Simple-Dimple.

Well. After I killed the Shadows and the Skeleton Warriors, I found this Halfling warrior in a cell. Her name was Mazzy Fentan. I really liked her. She has a lot of respect for Flinds. I came up to her all Mirror Imaged in my Flindy form and she said “Ho. Noble friends!” I usually don't get greeted like that when I'm in my Flindy form. I thought that was pretty cool.

Anyhoo. Things got a little shady after I freed Mazzy. I ran into another bunch of Skeleton Warriors. But this time they were flanked by Shadow Fiends. And that's bad. Shadow Fiends Hold. That's sketchy.

At first I considered drinking one of my Potions of Freedom. But then I thought: huh? That's kind of a waste. Why don't I just kill them with Meteors instead?

It made sense and all. But it got me into a bit of a jam. I kept running, tossing Meteors, and casting Shadow Door until they were dead. It took forever. And by the time it was over, I was out of Level3s and 5s. And my buffs had run out.

That's when things got way worse: a Bone Golem came out of nowhere and joined the Skeleton Warriors in their
little kill Alastria crusade. Bummers!

Ok. 3 Bony things. No buffs. No Shadow Door. What do we do Tweedles? Air Control Ring! Yeah! So I disappeared. Good Idea right? Not exactly: the Bony things all surrounded me. The Tweeds and I were trapped! And Improved Invisibility was running out!

So I got buffed up as much as I could and figured I'd have to fight through one of the Skellies to get free. But with that Bone Golem there, and Draw on Holy Might used up, it seemed a little sketch- really sketch actually.

Then it hit me. Teleport Field! Yeah. I moved the Skellies out of my way. And I was free.

Even better, the Skellies got swept into another room so I got the Bone Golem all alone. And once it was just me and him, I gave him a beat down in my Flindy form. Ok, so it wasn’t really a beat down. It was more like this: “Ha! I’m a Flind with a +3 Halberd! Take that!” “But oh, you’re a really big Golem and I'm low on Stoneskins. Run away!”

Yeah. Well eventually the Golem died and I was able to take a nap. After that, I killed a bunch more chittery-critters. And then I met the head of it all: the Shade Lord.

The Shade Lord was no fun. He kept Blinding me, Level Draining me- all shorts of nasty stuff. I had to dig real deep in my scroll case. But in the end, the Tweeds and I prevailed. Lightbringer Alastria saves the Umar Hills! Yippee!

Yeah. So I’m back in Athkatla again. And this time I have coin! Hear that Tweedles! It's party time! And
we never have to go back to the Umar Hills again! Hooray! But...Oh! Damn! I just remembered why I went to the Umar Hills in the first place. The murderer! I totally forgot...

Oh well, it looks like I’ll be going back to the Umar Hills after all. That’s not so bad I guess. I can check up on
the mayor’s wife and see if she dropped some weight.

Btw. The battle descriptions were a little vague in this one because most of the screenshots didn't really come out. I could see the area, but the characters and spell effects were missing . I not sure what happened there. If you have any ideas, PM me.

Alesia, good thinking on the tele field while surrounded.

But what happened with the Lichs in the Ruins? Did you encounter them? Should have been one on your way to the Sun Gem, right?

The Lichs are only there if you have always toughest spawns installed. I didn't install that component because I wanted to do Umar early.

I'm trying to shield Alastria from tough stuff untill she's ready. I wasn't willing to put her up against SCS Lichs at level 12.

Urgo faced a lot more nastiness in the Temple then Alastria did. He's a brave one! Again, congrats!

Best,

A.

Wise move to avoid the toughest spawns for Alastria. Didnt realize that was what gave rise to the Lichs.

Urgo was also level 16, compared to 12. But, I suspect Alastria will go further in the end. Unlike Urgo, she thinks strategically and tactically about her battles (when she's not contemplating her next disco party)--while Urgo just blusters in and mashes everything with his axe. I suspect this will get him into trouble before too long, but he's a Dwarven Beserker, and that's his style. What can you do?

I respect that. To my mind, style should matter in RPGs. And if Urgo goes down in flames, swinging his axes: so be it.

Like wise, if Alastria gets squished in Spider Form when a simple Sunfire would have won the day, that's fine too.

It's the ride not the destination- even if I do hope they both end up at the Throne.

Cheers,

A.

Urgo just finished clearing level 1 of WK--all the statues are dead to my knowledge (I've searched everywhere) but the portal says some statues are still prohibiting passage. First time I have seen this bug. I may have to CLUA to the next level. If you feel that is inappropriate in a no-reload, let me know. Urgo will head to Spellhold in the meantime. He left the dragons, liches, and beholders in Atkatla till chapter 6, when he should have some HLAs.

Good luck in Spellhold Angiras!

Alastria's headed to Spellhold as well. Aran Linvail learned that a Thief/Mage with a Short Sword is no match for a Mustard Jelly in a Telefield.

I hate to inform everyone that Stephanie Kettles has just died to what seems to be a flesh to stone spell cast by the Dao Djinn in trademeet. I think that the Dao Djinns can see through improved invisibility.

I redid that battle, but this time casting the efreeti summon. It was indeed flesh to stone as I remember it.

Btw. In my install, the Djinnis did not seem to target through Improved Invisibility. I have SCS Smarter Djinnis installed though. I don't think Alastria went Jelly in that fight but she may have.

I'm running another F/M through, I will have that level 1 protection from petrification erected on my F/M when I kill the Dao Djinns along with my efreet summon of course. It would be my third F/M because I messed up my second one and got her killed too :P

They are easy after the initial flesh to stone burst. Both of them only have one such attack.

Sorry about your loss Shadow, and good luck on the new incarnation.

Urgo took out the Djiniis without much trouble, but I am not sure if enrage protects against flesh to stone, When he did the Slaver-Sewer quest he used a green protection from petrification spell to cross the bridge in the sewers just be sure, and had no idea that the Djinnis might cast that spell.

There is nothing in the enrage SPCL file about the flesh toi stone spell, or about immiunity to petrifoication, but there are multiple types of hold immunities, and probably flesh to stone is one of those hold effects. I can test it when I do the Unseeing Eye quest, because there is another petrification trap in front of the long walkway to the Temple.

Angiras I'm pretty sure Ribald(or someone around the promenade) sells potions which protect against petrification. Eventually your saves will be good enough anyways. I was just careless because I had done that battle before with my solo fighter and forgot the djinns used flesh to stone. And yes I initially believed improved invisibility would be enough.

Athos - Barbarian 12

Valygar - Stalker 11

Yoshimo - Thief 14

Athos and his group entered the vampire lair. That is, they went to the gates, where they fought a group of grimwarders, after which Athos and Yoshimo fell back. Valygar went in to scout the place and, one by one, picked off its inhabitants. Vampires tend to run around a lot after getting hit, so this took a while, but they posed no danger. Only for Tanova he got help: After waiting out her True Sight and PfMW, a summoned berserker warrior was sent in. Tanova stunned and then killed him with a masterfully placed lightning (it hit the warrior 5 or 6 times) while being protected herself, but her mislead went down as well. Since apparently she was already using fairly low-level damage spells, Valygar went in again to finish her off. She attempted to cast a few more spells, but each time started running around before they were finished (using SCSII's improved general AI, but not improved mages or vampires). Eventually she was out of spells and easy prey, just like the others.

The room downstairs was cleaned out with the help of Improved Kitthix. I had hoped she'd be immune to level drain, but wasn't - anyway, her AC was so good that she hardly ever got hit. She killed the 3 vampires one by one with help from Athos; at some point, each of them would fail their save vs web, then they're easy pickings. Kitthix fell shortly after, so the grimwarders needed to be eliminated in the traditional way - not a big problem anyway.

Athos found the Shield of the Lost in the blood pool and a katana+2 downstairs. Lassal and Bodhi are still left, but there's no hurry to do them now, I want to stay in chapter 3 for a bit longer anyway.

Instead, Athos and his group decided to head to Trademeet. They met Cernd and went to the druid grove, where they found a pair of stealthy boots in a troll mound. Between Athos and Valygar's backstab, those trolls didn't stand a chance, although they did manage to do some damage to Athos at times.

They had their first scary moment shortly after, when they ran into a group of druids fighting some trolls. One of the druids cast a fear spell, which affected Athos and Valygar - even though the druids were not hostile to them! Valygar didn't cause much trouble, but Athos ran right into the next group of druids, who proceeded to attack him. He was hit by multiple insect plagues and a few lightnings, fortunately he had used a lightning protection scroll beforehand. When the fear finally wore off, he and Valygar made their way back to where Yoshimo and his berserker warrior were attempting to fight off the 3 remaining trolls that defeated the first group of druids. The trolls were defeated, and after some healing and regrouping, so were the druids. They sustained a lot of damage in this fight (more than 200 between the 3 of them), all because of the unexpected fear effect in the wrong moment.

After that it went smoothly again. A few more druids were quickly killed, then Cernd challenged Faldorn for the grove and won. Ithafeer and her pals were killed on the way out, she starts out as blue circle, so Athos and Valygar got a few hits in before she 'woke up', that made things fairly easy. We got the Gauntlets of Ogre Power from her as well as Gnasher (for Item Upgrade's Fulcrum) from a druid, among other, less spectacular loot.

Back in Trademeet, Yoshimo got drunk on potions of master thievery and shortly after brought a present for Athos: the djinni lamp. After that they handed in Ithafeer's head and got their rewards from the Trademeet merchants. They got the Staff of Earth here, very handy as it gives them another summon (now: Berserker, Kitthix, Djinni, Earth Elemental).

To finish up the Trademeet quests, Raissa was saved and the circlet from the tomb returned to Logan. Both tasks were uneventful. Athos bought a few rare spell scrolls as a gift for Imoen when they'd finally meet again, then they prepared to leave Trademeet.

Good luck with Athos Thar!

Urgo continued.

Spellhold was largely uneventful. The lich died in a single hit from Azureedge--thats 3 lichs in a row that have been one hit destroyed! Seems unlikely but those are the facts. Collected the ring of freedom--which may come in handy if the SCS mages continue to use web after malaison. Didnt do any of the side quests in there---basically collected the horns and escaped.

Urgo's tactics for mages has relied upon ranged attacks from the Azureedge (he also has Hangard's axe), so that he can fight inside their tele fields, outside their webs, and away from their red and blue fire shields. He just continues to throw axes at them till their protections wear out, drinking a healing potion occasionally to counter their magic missles, sunfires, meteors, and wiltoings. With the belt of inertial barrier and 138+ hp, he can survive their magical attacks without too much sweat, and as long as enrage is up, he doesnt have to worry about their disabling spells. In between enrages he relies upon invisibility potions. These tactics were also used sucessfully against Irenicus.

Back in Brynlaw he collected the horn from Cayia, and soon found himself in Sahaugin City, where he solved the mephit puzzle to obtain the cloak of protection +2. The maze traps were foiled by enrage. He then collected the cloak of mirroring--the priestess fell to Greater Whirlwind ranged attacks from Azureedge, and drank an invisible potion to avoid fighting on his way to the Rebel Prince, where he accepted the fake heart. The King and his cronies were no match for him, and he soon made his escape to the Underdark.

Upon arriving in the Underdark, he fought a few earth and air elementals for xp, but was unable to free the imprisoned mage, because he cant use a freedom spell. He would have liked the Death Spell helmet, but I am not sure it is equippable by a fighter anyway.

The Drow group was dispatched, even though they summoned 4 Mordy swords, which Urgo had to avoid, unable to damage them---thats one of the reasons he wanted the Death Spell helm. He immediately donned a Drow Full Plate +5. which he will wear during his visit in the Underdark.

Urgo then helped the Duregar kill a demon, and cleared the Kua-Toa Dungeon, obtaining the Bracers of Blinding Strike and a vial of blood from the Kua-Toa Prince, and the Belt of Strength (for Croim Faer) from the Demon Knights. At first, he wasnt sure he could do the Demon Knight fight, until he remembered that he had Kithix--which worked at the altar.

He then visited the Silver Dragon, gained entry into the Drow City, and saved Phaere from the Illithids--none of the fights along the way were than difficult for him. He spent most of his coin at the Drow Merchants buying potions. Dwarves dont like drow much, and Urgo is having a hard time stomaching their tyrannical matriarchal society, and doesnt like taking orders from them on a timed basis. Finding no sign of Irendcus or Bodhi, he plans to get out of there as soon as possible.

Alastria's Journal: Entry 10

Ok. I guess I'm getting a little greedy now. Even though I have, like, a ton of gold. And even though I've already paid Bodhi for helping me find Imoen, I decided to take another job. This one wasn't just about the money though. I really wanted to help.

I dropped by the Copper Coronet to do a little shopping. While I was there, I met a girl named Nalia. She's really smart. We have a lot in common. Her braids are awful -she totally needs a makeover- but aside from that, she'd be a great girl to hang out with. She even dabbles in Polymoprhing! The Tweeds likes her too!

Anyhoo. Her home was overrun by Trolls and Yuan-Ti. And since I love killing scaly critters anyways, it made sense to help her. So I did.

She lives in this huge Castle out in the woods. I guess she's pretty rich and all- though you couldn't tell by looking at her. In any event, she helped me get in, and then the Tweeds and I took over from there- just like we always do.

We started running into Trolls as soon as we got in. Nalia wasn't kidding: the place was infested! Trolls were everywhere! The kitchen, the dinning room, the courtyard, the garden: Trolls all around. Try having a fancy nobles banquet with that goin' on. People would be, like, daintily picking devilled eggs off of Hor D'Oeuvres trays. And then: POP! They'd explode! Chunked by a Troll! That would make you totally unpopular. And can you imagine the laundry bill!

Yeah. So I could totally see why Nalia wanted help. Good thing she met me. Because I'm a whirlwind of Troll destruction in my Flindy form. They took a beating.

At first, we just cruised through- dropping Trolls with the Halbred all buffed up. The Banquet Hall was a bit of a problem though. The Trolls were havin' a little shindig there or something cause there was a whole bunch of them: 5. And worse still, 3 of them were Spirit Trolls. And yeah: they're no fun.

Ok. I should correct that. Spirit Trolls WERE no fun back in Trademeet. But I've learned a few things since then, and now they're a hoot.

The problem with the Spirit Trolls was that they wouldn't stay still. They'd keep hopping around, dodging my Halbred, going Invisible. And since they regenerate pretty fast, I just couldn't kill'em. Well, if the problem is that they won't stay still, then what's the solution? Like, duh: hold them in place right? Now that I have Globe of Invulnerability, I can do just that. Look out Spirit Trolls!

So yeah. This time I got all buffed up with my usual combat stuff and added in Improved Haste and Globe of Invulnerability too. And then I just laid down a couple Webs. Not so tough when you can't hippity-hop hey Spirit Trolls.

http://i1195.photobu...triaKeep009.jpg
http://i1195.photobu...triaKeep011.jpg

The next hurdle was this Yuan-Ti mage flanked by Trolls. Mages, I can handle- I just go Jelly. And fighters, they're easy too: I just go Flind or Spider. But when there's both around. Well that can get a little dodgy.

I've gotten pretty good at dealing with those sits though. I buffed up with Polymorph Self, Spell Shield, Shield, Blur, Mirror Image, Shadow Door, Spell Immunity: A, Spell Immunity: D, Spell Immunity: E, and Globe of Invulnerability. Then, I laid down a Web and took out the Trolly-Trolls while my spells protected me from the Yuan-Ti's magic.

Once the Trolly-Trolls, were gone, I went Jelly. By that time, my spell defenses where petering out and the Yuan-Ti decided to take the rest down. But I was a Mustad Jelly. So it's not like he could really do anything to me anyways. I just chased him around, Chilly Touched him through his Stoneskins until he was injured, and then finished him with my Bhaalspawn Vampiric Touch. Bye, Bye Mr. Ti!

Well, that just set up the big showdown: Flind versus Super-Troll. The Super-Troll's name is Torgal. Was I should say. He's totally dead now.

Same plan as with the Spirit Trolls really: buff, Web, and then Beat. The only difference here was that I decided to use some Meteors to pop this little Spectral Troll before shifting and finishing off the rest.

Now after that, I figured it was all over. Wrong! A bunch of Spirit Trolls ambushed me and surrounded me over by this dead guy. I was trapped!

But guess what I did? Yuppers: Telefield- followed by Improved Haste. And then I was gone.

I just love Alteration spells!

It was all just cleanup at that point. I slept, went back, killed the Spirit Trolls, took out some Golems, and then got into a tussle with this cranky Fighter guy. He did a disappearing act after I cast Telefield so I never did get to find out who he was. Maybe Nalia will know?

Yeah: Nalia. That reminds me...I should go to the Copper and get my praises. Maybe Nally and I can kick back a few Golden Sands too? You know- to celebrate and all? That could be fun.

Anyhoo. I'm not really sure what I'm going to do after I get all sorted with Nalia. Bodhi's been chomping at my bits about the Thieves so I'll probably have to help her with that. I'm not super-enthused, but sometimes you've just gotta do.

Btw. Good luck Wise! And Congrats on completing the BG1 leg.

Btw II. I'm glad to see that Athos and Urgo are still making progress. Keep it up!

Makes sense Angiras. That's a good plan.

Best,

A.
