Hard luck Corey, but an impressive attempt none the less. I'll look forward to reading about your backstabs!

Hmm, well before I can backstab, I will have to survive spells. That's a taller order for a human, without shorty saves. But thanks for the well wishes, nevertheless.

I also have to survive BG 1, again without shorty saves. But it will be fun and a challenge, which is what I am going for.

UD7;

The blind leading the blind:

Posted Image  Posted Image  Posted Image

I used my last ‘Clairvoyance’ scroll to reveal the cabin layout then cleared the elementals and a small party of Drow before playing with the weird detention apparatus... casting a fast ‘Heal’ on Raevilin returned his sanity and he gratefully rewarded Valando with a bastard sword.

Tip:  It’s not cricket but Alchra Diagott is MUCH * easier to kill if you target him before he completely materializes.

Fighting cheese with cheese:

Posted Image  Posted Image  Posted Image

The Demon Knights can be a tough fight for low-level parties so I like to set a large pile of “Skull Trap’s (7) then Mazzy drops her “Black Spider Figurine” and leaves the room... Kitthex sacrifices itself and then the Demons ran around the empty room casting spells ** and tripping over each other.  Viconia hit level 14 here and Jaheira claimed the STR belt.

Fish for dinner again:

Posted Image  Posted Image  Posted Image

My old tactic here was to flood the first room with ‘FireStorm’ but now I just reveal it with ‘Farsight’, then rest... The fish tend to move into the adjacent room to hide and now Mazzy can zip-in to deliver the tadpoles. I like this tactic better because when they follow her out the doorway bottlenecks them nicely... Once again ‘Detect Illusions’ proves its worth against the luckless Kuo-Toa Prince!

* Otherwise he typically has ‘SI: Abjuration’ (blocks ‘Dispel Magic’), ‘ADHW’, ‘Imprisonment’ and at least three ‘Time Stop’s.

** If they didn’t cast spells at me illegally whilst I stand behind the door then I would probably feel a bit guilty about using this ploy against them.

P.S. corey_russell, Good luck... This time for the win, yes?

While I hope so, I would not be suprised if it took a number of restarts. I just started the new character tonight, and am having fun, so it's all good for me when that's the case.

Grond0/Gate70 multiplayer attempt 8
We have to buy a diamond back to upgrade the berserk warrior horn - not something we'd normally sell so a bit of a mystery. Next we need some iIllithium. Jerla the ore merchant wants 24 hours to forge an alloy substitute so we visit her source for the genuine article. He is a duergar named Unger Hilldark and can be found at the Copper Coronet. His supply chain has been disrupted so we get to kill Neb the child killer, collect a bounty for Neb and obtain the illithium too. Cromwell lovingly expensively improves the mace of disruption then we deal with Anarg before returning to the vampire lair.

Tanova is first. It is a wonderful tale of careful planning, controlled execution and one summon at a time being sent in. Right up until the moment where she confuses us both. We're standing together, Pendal with MMM's and Thimble with ranged Azuredge. Luckily Thimble completes her spell, turning Pendal improved invisible and he wanders off towards the lower level while Thimble is attacked by Tanova. No real harm is done, and Pendal recovers a few seconds before Thimble. Tanova doesn't last long against Azuredge and the improved mace.

The fledgling vampires and grimwarders guarding Lassal are removed then a rest is called for before tracking Lassal down to the spike room. He asks who the devil we are; he was expecting to receive the well-to-do Pendal-Thimble's for dinner and turns hostile on us for gate-crashing. Pendal draws him towards Thimble and again Azuredge/Disruption do their job. After spiking him we are treated to Bodhi and persuade her to leave. On our way out a brief tour of the graveyard turns into regicide.

Slight problem again, had been relying on autosaves and towards the end of the session my keyboard commands stopped responding. I went to save as a precaution and all the save games had gone (seen the save game scenario before and lost about an hour that time). We called it a day and I saved anyway. Found that save in temp/mpsave instead of mpsave - also had a screenshot folder, another temp and tempsave folder within the temp folder. Have moved the relevant files across and a quick test appears OK but time will tell.

& while waiting for the restoration Pendal and Thimble skimmed through a few more pages of their Icewind Dale Ten Towns tome.

Tropp (gnome fighter / thief, Gate70) and Grouch (dwarf fighter, Grond0).

Grouch uses the Reckless ring to increase his attacks, not caring that he is easier to hit as a consequence. What is dead can't hurt him (other than the many undead perhaps). Dorn's Deep sees Fleezum (fighter), Flozum (fighter) and Seth (thief) killed. Marketh is allowed to leave with none of his equipment - but takes 500 of the party gold which wasn't expected and had no comeback open to Tropp/Grouch. Several trips to Kuldahar  are made to sell surplus goods, allowing Tropp to work out the easiest way back (without having to face spawning myconids).

There is a moment (couple of minutes actually) of hopelessness for Tropp but Grouch knuckles down to de-bone a pile of skeletons then cuts down a pair of mothers greater mummies while Tropp stands helpless. Grouch finally persuades Tropp to get his act together and stop staring at his boots.

Water elementals ignore Grouch (an effect of his shield!) but he doesn't return the compliment. Tropp decides he can't remain a passenger and stuns a series of fire giants including their mom and dad. He is having fun fighting four giants at once until Maiden Ilmadia joins in and badly wounds him. A running retreat is employed until Grouch has pinned her to the ground with arrows of piercing, then both adventurers use normal arrows to kill another four or five giants.

Grouch has done an excellent job (in avoiding the mummy/golem certain-death hopelessness) so Tropp decides to tidy up a few loose ends while the dwarf is resting (single player). Some excellent equipment (repeating light crossbow, the Argent Shield) is of no use and sold, others are stashed at the forge so Grouch can decide whether to use them later. Then at the Severed Hand a serious amount of XP is given before the journey back to Dorn's Deep is undertaken.
Some very valuable holy water
A daughter's journal is greatly appreciated
Plants are your friend
Holy water isn't the only water
Every arboretum needs birds
Safely away from bears of the sword coast
All this experience is in addition to the levels below so an unexpected starting bonus for Grond0 next time (he doesn't need it, having 50-100% more kills than me in these two games).

Tropp Fighter 13 / Thief 15. 711 kills (+29), Iron Golem.
Grouch Fighter 18. 1188 kills (+80), Malavon.

Pendal F9/I11. 212 BG1 kills. 115 BG2 kills. Durst.
Thimble F9/I11. 196 BG1 kills. 215 BG2 kills. Crypt King.

Reklan the level 8 Human Kensai (solo) - entering Trilogy no-reload challenge...

Reklan has defeated Sarevok and got captured by Irenicus. Here is is starting stats and proficienciens:
Posted Image

He intends to dual to thief at either level 12  or 13. Hope he can survive - without the shield of harmony though, it's going to be tough....

Edit: I SKed a bag of holding since solo. I made it out of Chateau Irenicus alive. I skipped Fenden to conserve on heal potions and the genie mephits since I had no way to deal with them, thanks to a HUGE blunder I did in BG 1. I should have NOT had the helm of balduran equipped against Sarevok -- as a result, the claw of kazgarath did not export over, and I got the helm of balduran which I can't use, ever I think, not even with UAI right (since I'm a Kensai)?

Actually Corey UAI over-rides even kensai restrictions, so you could potentially use the helm if your thief prospers.

Reklan the level 10 Kensai - FINAL Update

Reklan made great progress, including freeing Hendak, clearing the graveyard area (minus the crypts), and did well in the ambushes.

Unfortunately, he did a false economy and made a fatal error. I know the Dao Genies in trademeet like to do flesh to stone. So should have purchased a protection from petrification scroll, I had the money to do so too. I relied on improved invisibility, but it either got dispelled or wore off at a bad time, and an instant death spell killed him, which I'm sure was a flesh to stone.
Posted Image

Too bad, I was really enjoying him a lot in BG 2. Putting ***** in quarterstaff and ** in two hand weapons was really working out extremely well. I was proud of defeating Mencar's band too as a solo melee.

I made a starting save in BG 1, think will try him again - BG 1 was a bit boring, but since it's not very long that's okay - want to have fun in BG 2 again.

Condolences again Corey. I'm also worried I will not remember what specific spells I need to look out for. I usually use the djinn bottle to act as a distraction, sometimes the efreetis use the flesh to stone on it.

Meoru, dwarf kensai. Fresh from solo BGT BG1. 258k xp, haven't levelled up beyond 161k in BG1 and opting to level up now rather than console back to 161k. Final BG1 Stats.

Belt transports me into a woodland clearing but his spell flings me across it and into a tree. As I lie there stunned Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc and Dynaheir are chased by a group of thieves into the clearing. I am still almost comatose so can do nothing to help them, and we are all taken prisoner.

Our captor seems to take a special interest in me and I am relieved when more thieves attack his compound giving Imoen the chance to free me. Jaheira and Minsc are nearby so I give them the best equipment and make do for myself before telling them to find Khalid and Dynaheir while I create a diversion. Imoen seems uncertain after seeing me take 50 poison damage retrieving my pantaloons until I point out the need of their two missing companions is greater. & so I am alone once more.

Two minor healings and a DUHM are used before I melee a lightning mephit. I now have complete proficiency with a longsword but my offhand effort with a katana is entirely non-proficient but still 12 to hit so worth it against the likes of goblins. I save against a colour spray from a radiant mephit (DUHM save is 6, roll was 17) and grab a magical long sword so junk the katana. A mist mephit teaches me to fight blind then an ice mephit is dealt with before I kai two lesser clay golems.

Ilyich and his duergar are painful, and the mage mirror images before I can reach him. I turn and run - straight into a dust mephit. I run further and kill it before realing the duergar have killed their mage. I glug all my minor healing potions before returning with DUHM to finish the duergar. After resting I use DUHM kai on a hapless cambion.

Yoshimo is waiting for me and suggests four mephit portals ahead are a near-certain death without his assistance saves are 2:Death 4:Wand 5:Spells 8:Petrify/Breath so I decide to take him up on his offer.

Once the portals are de-activated I hand him a number of unidentified goodies so he can make his own way to safety. After dealing with a dwarf or two, some goblins, a final group of duergar and Frennedan I finish Ulvaryl too quickly for my own good but am able to resist my fear and kill a shadow thief mage.

I find out the hard way that I don't know how potions of explosions work I clicked on an enemy, should I have clicked on me and then an enemy when gulped?) I have run right up to them before it works. Two are dead but I am blinded in return and getting hit by various effects two saves vs breath are made so retreat. Two follow so I kill them as my vision returns then cast DUHM to kill the final one. A few minutes later I have the Sword of Chaos in my possession.

The final trio of thieves are no danger and I emerge to see Imoen and Irenicus fighting before they are arrested. Much of the items I have collected are stashed and I purchase a gem bag before heading into the circus. Kalah and his shadows are soon eliminated, then I purchase a scoll case from Lady Yuth and head to the slums. Gaelan Bayle wants 20,000gp before he will help me, and I've just spent the last of my cash on glasses of identification so jobs for money beckon.

Inside the Copper Coronet I wave to Yoshimo and Minsc, tell Anomen that I am a coward through and through before speaking to Nalia. She can travel with me I'd like to try the peaceful Glaicas option, tempted to recruit NPC's one at a time for their jobs, but the bad news is I have just sold a dozen or more scrolls she could have used. I have a look at her spell book - dear me the selections are dire so I circle the ones I'd like her to memorise instead. On the way out we accept another job from Lord Jierdan Firkraag and convince Lehtinan that we should like to check out the other entertainment on our return.

As we leave Nalia suggests I purchase the sword of flame until I point out it is ten times the price I can afford. She frowns, but I ty to cheer her up by saying at least we don't have to deal with trolls so there is no problem. We are ambushed as we leave, Nalia is too slow with her slow and disrupted. I have been blocked twice but finally reach the mirrored caster and kill her with a single blow, then turn to attack the slaver shooting at Nalia. Then I work around the remaining slavers finally dealing with Suna Seni.

Nalia is less than impressed when we arrive at Watchers Keep but sees the sense of purchasing a potion case, and of selling the unwanted slaver items. She will stand for no further diversions though - perhaps just this one then. As we reach the docks Nalia starts to whine. She whines even more when Renfeld is returned and Xzar wants us to do something else. So much whining in fact that she fails to spot a mad cleric and then upsets him. I am a long way away the gap from Xzar to the Harper HQ, so not quite at the Ships Bounty tavern so Nalia moves and aims her bow. She disrupts his first spell but not a second. I reach the cleric and kill him while wondering why Nalia has allowed herself to be held instead of switching from the ranged arrow to melee Arbane and become immune to hold person.

Anyway, we finally reach the de'Arnise Hold and make our way to a palisade. Nalia has confessed we are to fight...trolls. I slap my head, why did I not realise from her earlier comment. I turn to go but Nalia insists we continue and says she will kill anything that falls. We enter through a hidden entrance and I make sure our first task is to open it from the inside so there is a quick exit if needed. Then we kill two trolls and head upstairs. Nalia decides we need a key, and the trolls guarding it cause me to glug four superior healing potions.

After a rest we kill a yuan-ti mage and grab the Keep key. Glaicus is charmed by the ring of human influence but the effect is immediately dispelled so she runs while I glug potions then attack. Glaicas has removed the stoneskins protecting Nalia and injured her so we both glug potions of speed. I intervene and Nalia manages to slow Glaicas - but a troll has also joined in. Now we are able to take the fight back to  them and a few hits are all I need.

So much for the charm. He glugs a lot of potions too.
Edit, re-did this (outside no reload) to get a screenshot but doing a slow before the charm seems to help. Here is the charm and dispel followed a little while later by the realisation. Perhaps the haste effect gets another attack in first and messes the dialogue up?
Edit2, some tests.
  • Nalia only does the "charmed"  dialogue if she and charname can both SEE Glaicas. Best way I found to do this was to have her invisible and walk charname in once she can see Glaicas otherwise the conversation often starts with one of them outside (this with a party of 2 so with 6 people it would be worse).
  • Glaicas can save against the charm. A 2nd or 3rd charm can still work.
  • The charm can still work even if the dialogue doesn't happen.
  • The charm still works if he is attacking/hitting, if a troll is nearby, if he is hasted.
  • I now can't replicate what happened in my no reload. Oh well.

Reklan the Human level 9 Kensai entering the BG 2 portion of a no-reload challenge...

Reklan soloed Sarevok in melee combat, then soon after got captured  by some unknowns. He eventually got an opportunity to try to escape.
(11 days 7 hours later)
Reklan successfully escaped Chateau Irenicus. Thanks to generous resting, he managed to do so and have many more heal potions than his first incarnation. Here is his character sheet:
Posted Image

Note he's wearing the claw of Azgarath, which makes his HP bit worse than reality. It also boosts his AC and saves vs almost everything except death. Swapping the ring +1 for a neck +1 will be a high priority, to free up a ring slot for the ring of air control, our first purchase.

I think you're referring to potions of firebreath (explosions work just like a fireball).  Firebreath does require that you are adjacent to someone when you first breath, but you are then free to move round.  The two rounds of damage it does make this a very effective crowdkill device.

Reklan the solo level 10 Human Kensai - Micro-update

Reklan has successfully cleared the graveyard area (minus the lower crypts), using a protection from undead scroll. His main weapon as a Kensai is the Martial Staff. His auxiliary items is the Arbane, Namurra, ring of human influence, ring of air control. Suna Sune was successfully defeated, mainly due to the ring of air control's improved invisibility. The sick harper was successfully rescued due to the same thing. EDIT: When returning the harper, that cleric of Cyric tries to hold person Reklan. However, Reklan was ready for this, Reklan was dual wielding Arbane's (immune to hold) and Namurra, despite not being proficient in either, and that was enough for victory.

Reklan also successfully freed Hendak, though it did take quite a few heal potions. He's thinking about investigating the sewers next. EDIT: forgot to mention an important detail. When you go to the cell area where Hendak is being held, IF you kill the slaver on the platform before he can talk to you, the two slaver wizards/clerics who cast hold person do NOT appear. I approached via improved invisibility and one-shotted him.

EDIT:
The sewer enemies were successfully dealt with. Reklan got a scare when he attempted to fight the Otygh by itself and then goblins appeared. Furtunately, their first play was bless. Reklan's first play was improved invisibility, then quickly mowed down the goblin shamans while that was active. Rest were fairly easy after that. Lilacor is now Reklan's though he won't use it much.

Reklan decided he would deal with the Slavers in the moored ship next. Buffs were heroism, frost giant strength, DUHM. Then last was improved invisibility via ring - the enemy cleric was the first target. The lots of Kai was used to burn down the nearby enemies, with a final Kai saved for the Captain. Reklan looted everythiing and returned and barely had enough to buy a flame sword so that he can kill the trolls, which he did. The two Yuan-tis past the two child cells were beat by a single Kai.

For the next group of slavers with the two mages, the Namurra silenced them both! After that was smooth sailing, a few heal potions had to be used again though of course. Reklan is NOT reporting to Hendak, he's saving that for after he duals to thief.

Reklan thinks he should do either Umar HIills or trademeet next, he's not sure yet.

Thanks for the luck. I am definitely very experienced with melee toons, and somewhat solo, much better than a solo mage anyways. Not certain that skill transfers to solo Kensia, but so far it seems to. I would have thought you already learned your Kensai tricks from Grond0, the Kensai Master, but guess BG 2 is such a big game, I might come up with a trick or two.

Not sure, I can't remember his tactics!

Meoru, dwarf kensai.

With Glaicas dead Nalia loses interest and we part company - this is what she took. I'm going to miss her expertise with traps long-term but the Flail of Ages +2 (acid, cold) means I can clear the trolls out of the main hall as I leave. The rest of the keep can wait as I have an appointment elsewhere.

I plan to shrug off a lot of poison, having killed various spiders and ettercaps before casting DUHM for Pai'Na. She is the first to die but I require five extra healing potions before the end, worth it for the figurine or the ioun stone and certainly worth it for the two together.

Meoru, dwarf kensai.

As I equip my new ioun stone I realise I had the girdle of bluntness equipped against the spiders and that the piercing girdle might have been a better choice. My hypothesis is confirmed with the next group of the little critters. As I leave I have to chunk Uncle Lester for Nevin, dig Tirdir out of the ground with my long swords and help Kamir the paladin become the legal guardian of an orphan girl called Risa.

I have to run bloodied and battered from a group of orog slavers after they disrupt my DUHM. After a chat with Lt Aegisfield, Rampah, a merchant and Rose Bouquet I have my suspicions about a local tanner, but first I must deal with a kidnapping. Am'Si is murdered by his companions, but I have killed Reti while Kitthix blocks Camitis and turns him hostile. He kills Kitthix and I cast kai after my first attack barely wounds him despite 24 damage. I take two hits in retun but deal out another 25, 26, 26, 25, 20 to kill him. I grab a ransom note and stash it outside the Copper Coronet not travelling at night for the time being as no strategy against vampires yet - a few options I can think of but not a priority.

Posting often as I doubt my kensai abilities are up to BG2.

Gate70, Comparing Notes:
* I too ran away from the Orog Slavers - the difference in my game though, is I didn't even try to mess with them! I knew when I was outmatched. Thanks to my range two melee weapon, it MIGHT be possible to snip, run, snip, run etc. until all are dead, but that's a long fight that way...
* I plan to get the Ioun stone soon. For Panai, my usual plan for my solo melee characters is fire resistance plus a potion of exposions. My save vs death is horrible (10 I think), so will definitely be using a protection from poison scroll when I'm ready to get it.
* Remember to use the single target web abiilty/spell of Kithix! Holding an enemy mage or cleric could be super useful.
* I too am dong the ransom bit for the silver pantaloons, I think that's what you get.
* If possible, trying to avoid confronting vampires at all. Only when the last ambush triggers (4 vampires), will I then pay Galen Bayle. The vampires will not fight you if you haven't decided to join the thieves yet (though, ironically, you have to fight shadow thieves in one encounter). The AoP I'm holding onto - I can use once I have 3,000,000 experience (Use Any Item HLA).
* I would say your dwarven Kensai a bit tougher than a human one, such as mine. Eventually, my character will get more powerful thanks to dualing (hiding in shadows, snares, UAI etc.) but that's still a long way off. For a solo melee in BG 2, the keys are successfully dealing with traps and successfully defending against enemy spells.

Reklan No 2, the level 11 Human Kensai - FINAL Update (possibly)

Reklan decided he would get the Ioun stone in Umar Hills. His main plan was to use protection from undead scrolls for the trash mobs there, and the use his special resources for the bone golems and the Shade Lord. However, something unexpected happened.

Shades and Shadow Fiends are undead, aren't they? The answer to this is important, because if they are not, then I died to lack of knowledge, and therefore it's not a bug and I need to restart from Candlkeep. If they are, then please read further.

I was in the room with the light gem, which I must loot to proceed. When I did, almost all of the shades and a shadow fiend attacked me, even though I had protection from undead active! I had to use a lot of heal potions, but I was pretty sure I was going to win (HP is slightlly higher tha 100), lot of resources left, but then I was instantly killed when I was 1/2 life.
Posted Image
Not sure what killed me, either a stat got to 0 (strength gets drained from one of their attacks I think), or a massive critical happened.

In any case, is this a bug (shades and a shadow fiend seeing me though protection from undead active), which would allow me to reload? Or is this by design, and I'm missing an important detail? If so, could someone explain what I am missing?

Not sure what the answer to this is - perhaps if you took the sun gem that reset the area conditions? I agree it sounds a bit buggy, although I have almost never used protection from undead scrolls (just occasionally on liches before SCS2 made that tactic useless).

I don't know if this helps, but when Goodguy and Badgirl went through this portion of the game, Goodguy was doing turn undead, which should have made all the undead be destroyed or run, but many were completely unaffected. I think Badgirl died, though Goodguy managed to slay everything despite the turning not working. But all other undead in other areas of this map (including shades and shadow fiends ) WERE affected. I know there's a flag on creatures to say they are undead, I wonder if that was forgotten by the programmers, so undead items/spells/abilities don't work on the ambush.

In vanilla, for example, Tanova can't be killed by mace of disruption for example, because programmers forgot to set her undead flag. Perhaps worse, protection from undead doens't help against her, and she mazed a solo level 15 fighter I had and ended his run.

While I believe it's a bug, I don't KNOW it's a bug, so I am asking for community concensus and I will go with the majority opinion. I mean who knows, maybe the programmers WANTED to scare you with this large mass of enemies appearing out of nowhere, that were suddenly immune to the player's undead tricks! That could certainly suprise a player and cause a reload (in normal circumstances).

Thinking of past runs, this explains a lot, with daystar/sunrays and turning being ineffective, and causing much more resources being used with a party that is needed for most of the rest of the map.

1. They are un-dead.

2. IMO you got charmed = dead.

3. SCS un-dead (especially improved Shade lord) have very buggy targeting because of the way the targets are scripted e.g. they often target you through a closed door or my personal favourite is that vampires will fire their domination spell at you even though you have turned them to your own side... I would re-load here but the bottom line is how you feel about it.

The vampires are the charmers, not the shades. I've never in all my runs get anyone charmed fighting the shades, just hold effects. But that wasn't my question in any case, thanks for answering though.

Hi all!

Apologies for vanishing mid-run. I relocated to the Mideast recently and found accessing the internet awkward during Ramadan. Now that its over, it should be easier for me to play and post.

Anyhoo. Alyssa is still alive and well. I've become pretty bored with her game however. If and when I resume posting on her, she'll be in the Underdark. I'm tempted to retire her though and play the original Transmuter Alastria for a while.

Best of luck to everyone! Condolences to the fallen.

Cheers,

A.
