Ganger, assassin 11
Ganger noticed immediately that things were not going to be easy in the dungeon when he struggled to overcome the lightning mephit. All his skill points in BG1 had gone on stealth, which has made that passable, but by no means reliable yet even in dungeon environments. His find traps and open locks skills rarely work even with the use of DUHM, so he was strong-arming things (DUHM getting strength up to 19 and constitution to 17) in order to progress.
The first group of goblins posed a bit of a challenge, but picking up a shortbow allowed him to use stealth attacks with poisoned arrows which dealt with a lot of the opposition. One significant exception was the golems and Ganger had to work hard against them to find space to re-stealth for repeated attacks. In the portal room he dragged all the mephits to one end and then sneaked to the other. After surprisingly finding that the portals could be poisoned it took next to no time to clear the lot with arrows.
Talking to the dryads got him to level 11 and he put his miserly 15 skill points into find traps to try and get that up to a workable level over time.
A number of traps seemed dangerous to a character with basic 40 HPs. More than once he would have been killed by traps but for the extra HPs given by DUHM.
The only thing he didn't manage to kill was the doppleganger, which got caught behind the door somehow. Ganger could feel it (had to detour round space when moving), but couldn't see it from any location. Ulvaryl the vampire can be difficult for solo characters to kill before she goes gaseous, but a backstab / firebreath combination did the trick here. I thought Ganger might be in trouble at the last encounter when her backstab was a critical miss, but poisoned arrows successfully prevented the assassin caster from completing any spells.
After the dungeon Ganger expected the circus to be simple, but it was actually quite difficult. Having already shown his poor offense and defense against shadows Ganger thought it would be nice to have backstabs available in the final fight so led werewolves down to the bottom level to leave the middle bit available for hiding. That is clearly not my normal tactic as I didn't remember this . It's a point of principle with me to kill all the shadows before finishing the circus and I was also trying to avoid using any healing potions. However, I did start to wonder whether I would have to compromise this time. Even after the shadows were both dead from run and hit tactics there was still a little wrinkle as the werewolf hits began to do damage. However, a final hit just after Kalah was killed still left Ganger with a small safety HP margin.
This death is bad news - particularly for Trug, but not great for Ganger eitherTrug: Assassin 9 (Gate70)
I am stuck in a cage and contemplate my life to date. What if I had not used magical tomes to increase my strength, dexterity, constitution and charisma? I guess I'd still be stuck here anyway.
Imoen giggles as she unpicks the lock while looking the other way and talking - how annoying that her thievery skills are beyond my meagre efforts. I have to explain for the first time since Candlekeep that my skills are more deadly and I have little interest for searching out baubles. She calls ME a bauble as I struggle with another lock (can't detect or open the pantaloon / dagger +1 painting) and flounces off with Minsc and Jaheira so I'm on my own again. I grab a katana instead and vow to return for my pantaloons later. I can't even tear the painting from the wall (yes, I tried for several minutes).
The first few enemies make me realise how much I have been relying on my equipment. A group of goblins fall in a sequence of backstabs but by the time we're done I am standing by the accursed cage once more. Similar experiences are repeated with other groups of enemies until I rest and a voice in the back of my head mentions the "other bloke" is already out of this stinking place and gone to the circus 60fps Grondo? What other bloke? I look around, half expecting Imoen to be there playing another trick on me.
This is not good, and the tricks playing on my mind see me try to backstab a fidgety Duergar mage. Stand still. He fiddles so much I don't even get to attack and have to run, almost dying. Ilyich has taken two poisoned arrows though and they are spread out so I mount a clean-up opertation. Several chunky backstabs sort them out and I shut my mind to the voices. The last two duergar are near a cambion so I kill them and decide not to release it as I've read that hide in shadows is useless against such a foe. I move back to search for a large trap and accidentally tread on it. Poof, I've gone and all that remains is the strange voice.
