Ah : I re-read what I'd written. Grunn is still going as he "only" took 40 damage from the blob, I can see it reads more as if he died but afraid I'm going to have to find another embarrasing way to finish him off!

& no, this run doesn't have the improved shade lord as it originated with an assassin based on the same install as Grond0 (fixpack, BGT, Generalized Biffing so we had something that felt true to the original under BGT) . Hence the shade lord was easy compared to the last few goes against the improved one.

Alyssa v. Abazigal (Or The Big Payback)

As many of you know Abazgial -or more precisely Tamah- is the arch-nemesis of my characters. Recently my Stalker, Ashoka, and, more tragically, my Undead Hunter Alessandra have fallen to her.

Ashoka was a victim of Alesia's success. Since my Bounty Hunter breezed through the fight, I didn't take the threat seriously when Ashoka arrived. I clearly should have: Ashoka was demolished within a couple rounds.

Alessandra came prepared, however, a perfectly timed Remove+Breach+Tamah Sleep combo sent her into permanent night just like Ashoka. Was there a reason to expect anything different for Alyssa? Sure: Spell Immunity: Abjuration. Spell Immunity: Abjuration means locked in Greenstone Amulet based Sleep immunity. And Sleep immunity turns Tamah into just another Wyrm. Still: I was nervous heading in. Alyssa is glad it's over.

The Drakes

I hate the Drakes in Abazigal's Lair. Hate'm. They're almost always a hassle for my characters. Fully buffed, Tensered, Alyssa breezed through them though. No screenshots here.

Human Form Abazigal

This is never dangerous: just a playful game of tag where the PC is always "it." Prepping for the arrival of Tamah is where the real "fight" takes place. Alyssa got down a batch of Time Traps, drank a Potion of Clarity, activated the Greenstone Amulet, and filled in the rest of her buffs. A shot of the Time Traps- deliberately placed near Aliana's Hidey-Hole.
Image IPB

Tamah and Abazgial
There she is. AND SHE'S RIGHT ON TOP OF ME! :crying:
Image IPB

HELP! HELP!
Image IPB

But Alyssa wasn't just running: she had a destination. And she got there.

Carsomyr first.
Image IPB

This time you sleep. :)
Image IPB

Then Abazigal. Abazigal fought well here but, playing it safe, Alyssa took refuge in Aliana's Hidey-Hole. Abazigal really won this portion of the battle: debuffing, disabling, and otherwise out fighting Alyssa. He just had one problem: he couldn't hurt her.
Image IPB

His Mordy Sword -which shows up as if on cue when you enter the Hidey-Hole- was quickly dipatched.
Image IPB

"What to do" thought Abazgial? But after seeing this roll, Alyssa was wondering the same thing...
Image IPB

A stalemate? Not with Alyssa's scroll collection. Time Stop->Chaos Blade.
Image IPB

Fin!
Image IPB

I'll post on the Pocket Plane Challenges soon.

Best,

A.

@Grond0- Sorry for your loss.:(

@Gate70- Did that Acid trap kill your Monk? I wasn't clear on that. EDIT: Just read your prior post. Got it. :)

@Serg- Good to see you back in action!

Alyssa "v" Balthazar (Or Soft Power)

Players often talk about routes to endgame power in Ascension. There are lots of good answers. The best answer that you never hear is Wisdom, Charisma, Reputation, Shields, and Slings.

As many know, Balthazar is available as an ally in Ascension. Wisdom, Charisma, and Reputation are what get him.

For the curious who have never seen this...

Alyssa's character record before the encounter (her reputation is 20).

And here are a few of the dialog panels...

Fighting alongside Balthy is fun. It's one of my favorite parts of Ascension.

Alyssa v. The Ravager (Or Rock Fight)

Running out of time. I'll quickly cover the Ravager fight though.

First, I'll note that with SCS installed Pocket Plane Challenges 1 and 2 are by far the most interesting. I would be very pleased to see an SCS tactical component that spruces up challenges 3,4, and 5.

Alyssa dropped the Ravager using the Reflection Shield + Sling approach. He's pretty trivial this way but it does take patience. The basic idea is to stay ranged and let the Reflection Shield foil the Bone Blades. As long as you don't get boxed in -and as long as you have +4 bullets- you win.

Used some Energy Blades at first just so that foolish HLA choice wouldn't be a complete and utter waste...
Image IPB

The Sling did almost all the damage however. It's funny to hear the Ravager say things like "You will suffer before you die, I promise!" when he's helpless and getting jacked by Sling bullets...

Best,

A.

@Alesia: Grats on crossing the Rubicon (Tamah/Abazigal) . And best of luck with Melissan (I'll cross my fingers for Alyssa)!

Good result with Abazigal/Tamah.  Was Aliana your character when you found the hidey-hole (& did she find it from a wing buffet).

Grunn, LN human male monk

No amount of washing is going to remove all that acid. As I pass the Radiant Heart I remember Reynald de'Chatillon is waiting for a cup and tell Sir Ryan Trawl I must borrow one. He wrinkles his nose and hands it over just to get rid of me. Anarg and Reynald expire as do the other fallen paladins, and then I decide to put a stop to the skinner district murders. Progress is slow as the ring of Gaxx heals wounds caused by traps, then I buff and give chase to Rejiek Hidesman while still wounded but his head start is too much and I end up fighting his supporters. Vellin Dahn saves my quivering palm as he disappears in a cloud of smoke. Two rune assassins and two ghasts are defeated but having started with wounds I have to lay on hands before finishing a bone golem (Monk: 17).

Raelis Shai is relieved to see me and I confirm I am here for the boots of speed only too willing to serve their cause. I keep a young portal clear until bounty hunters arrive then buff to mount a rescue effort. A welcoming party greets me but quivering palm and stunning blows are too much for them, likewise their loot is too much for the bag of holding despite selling items moments earlier. I fiddle around to make room then rest and start inspecting the prison cells. North first where my pre-buffs include quivering palm and two prison captains succumb from this as does the first minotaur. I rest and re-buff for the next cell, then sneak south and east as the warden shouts and buffs - but he can't see where I've gone so I rest and re-buff.

A gish, knight and warriors are in the third cell. Quivering palm and a stunning blow takes care of them. Yet another rest is taken before a group of yuan-ti and thralls are tackled, and another before a wyvern (hmm what is that shimmering globe over there). I don't bother resting for the Master of Thralls, stunning and killing one air elemental before sharing another stun between the remaining elemental and the Master. I finish the Master of Thralls as a caster hits me with lightning. I glug a couple of potions and chunk in response.

The penultimate cell has a greater wolfwere (Monk 18) plus four wolfweres, and the final cell a trio of genies which prove annoyingly challenging - but I needed to glug fifteen or so potions away. Their repeated flame strikes, fireballs and fire shields have removed the acid or perhaps cauterised my sense of smell - either way it is a good result. A final rest sees me partially buff before I introduce the planar orb into the brazier and set the thralls free. As I rush towards the battle I add a mirror image before forcing the Warden to save against a quivering palm (this gains him an extra second or two of life), then clear up the remainder. As I start to loot the ground two more yuan-ti drop their invisibility and I bash away at their buffs before adding Kitthix and the berserk warrior to speed things up. I kill one but the other self-destructs with a skulltrap leaving me as the sole survivor. I release Raelis Shai and Haer'dalis then head back to Bel Delmark to lighten my load and enrich my pockets. Lt Aegisfield is informed of the Skinner situation, Sir Ryan Trawl has the cup of Anarg back in his possession, Maheer has upgraded the horn of Valhalla twice and I have stashed an unfeasibly large amount of potions with a few gems thrown in.

@Serg- Thanks for the well wishes.

Truthfully, I have mixed feelings about entering the endgame with Alyssa. I've never really connected with her in an RP sense. Additionally, I still don't feel like I have the faintest clue how to play an M/T. I've found cheesy/spammy/overpowered with her, and I've found ad hoc/wing it/nibble, but I haven't found a satisfying, stylish middle ground- I can't say I'm happy with her play so far even though she has had some nice battles.

On a number of occasions I've considered retiring her just because I don't want to see her run classified as a "success." Of my runs since returning from break, Alyssa's has been the least successful from my viewpoint. Alastria, Alesia, Ashoka, Alessandra -even Alana- were all cooler and more enjoyable to play. Alyssa has just won.

All that aside, I am looking forward to the battles at the Throne: those should be fun. And I do hope Alyssa wins.  I just wish there were a way for her to win without people thinking of her as a "successful" character, or -in the alternative- a way of redeeming her run with a sweet final battle.

Anyhoo. We'll see how it goes. Thank again for the well wishes!

@Gate- Sorry for the obscure, private reference. =]

Aliana was my Avenger Druid in the old Ascension Solo Challenge. I nicknamed the nook in Abazigal's Lair after her because it was the only way she could get past Abazigal!

@Alesia -- thanks for showing me the new dialog with Balthsazar, was interesting. And also for showing the hidey-hole (which I never knew about, Picenon didn't use it). Good luck for the final stretch...

@Grond0 - condolences. Any reason your assassin refused to use a sword of flame to finish off the troll? That is thief-usable. Then you wouln't have to make a stop at Roger's...you can get one from Bernard.

@Gate70 - keep it up! Vaquen should be with you in BG 2 soon...

It's there and it can help if need be. My preference is to not use it though.

In vanilla, I wouldn't consider it. In regular Ascension, I only used it with my Avenger Druid, Aliana (hence the name). With an SCS Ascension install, it becomes tempting with more classes.

An M/T really doesn't need it. I decided to use it here mostly because I wasn't interested in taking any chances. I'm eager to try the Ascension battles with Balthazar as an ally: I haven't done that in an SCS install yet.

Script: If first character of CHARNAME = "A"...

Grunn, LN human male monk

I treat myself to a sensate amulet before heading to Trademeet and on to the druid grove where I sneak straight to Cernd and agree to observe his ritual challenge. @Alesia - I ran this 5 times (didn't seem against the no reload rules when there is no benefit), he can do critical misses but I saw a roll of 3 and it hit. She has casts resist fire, resist cold, regenerating in one pop so I'd say her being allowed to cast again is highly unlikely in my install. On my way out I chat to Kyland Lind no xp for not fighting him.

Comparing the Dao store to that of the "old witch" helps me decide on a course of action. I buy a fire giant potion from the djinn and stash it before buffing. I start off badly but one miss won't alter the outcome here. I collect two rewards for sorting out the djinn and the druids (Monk: 19), sort out Rejiek Hidesman and Raissa then hand the mantle of Waukeen to the mayor with a first and final shop at Trademeet market.

There is only one thing I want from Windspear Hills. I work through orcs, kamikazee kobolds, a ruhk, golems, vampires (Monk: 20, whirlwind attack), a greater wraith, greater wolfweres and orogs before reaching Tazok and DigDag. Conster decides to hide and it takes Kitthix to draw him out, then I buff for Firkraag. DUHM, air control ring, ilbratha, Whirlwind and hide in shadows. I injure him and tear down his stoneskins as Kitthix, the genie and the berserk warrior all help (by looking more tasty than me). I half-outrun a wing-buffet should have kept running, thought I'd beaten it but at least by running he switched targets and glug a potion of healing before returning, then run around until he loses interest again. As he attacks one of my three distractions I try a quivering palm attack with no luck, but a subsequent stunning blow works. Firkraag sneers, trying to charm then attack Kitthix and I realise my stun is useless. I kick his rear-end in frustration and that does the job (Monk 21: GWW).

Yup. That idea was what motivated creation of the Ascension mod. From the readme:

Some people like the ending to Throne of Bhaal well enough, I guess.  I liked it well enough (I did a lot of the work on it, after all), but I remember wishing that we had had the time to tinker with it more...

(section omitted)

Consider this my offering of what might have been.  You might not necessarily like it better...heck, you might not even like it at all...but I think it shows off what the Infinity Engine can do when stretched to its limit and offers a bit more bite to Throne of Bhaal's climax for those who think that's not a bad idea.

The whole thing started on Black Isle's BG2 message boards.  A friend of mine, Kevin Dorner (who runs an excellent site called Baldurdash at http://members.home.net/mrkevvy/ ...definitely check it out), had expressed a bit of disappointment at the fact that he had had no choice but to fight the strongest member of the Five, Balthazar.  Balthazar was a Lawful Good monk, after all, and wouldn't a charismatic and heroic Lawful Good character be able to maybe talk some sense into him?  He suggested that it would have been better to offer a non-fighting alternative or, hey, how about getting Balthazar to fight with you in the final battle?

Another poster (alas, I forget who exactly) offered another idea that it would have been a great idea if the Five had been resurrected in the final battle...that it would be cool to face them all at once.  And I agreed...that was a very interesting idea.

So the Ascension was born.

@Alesia: it would be great to see the video of this SCS+Ascension Throne fight...

Unfortunately, I'm not setup for video right now. :( I had the proper software on my old computer but not this one.

I enjoyed making the videos for Alessandra though so I'll probably do videos again sometime in the future.

I see. Then that would mean an invisibility potion or ring would have done the same trick, yes? Sword of mask is also possible, to root the troll in place to give ya time to hide and return for another go.

I must admit though, Grond0, you do find creative ways to die! Must be very few no-reloaders to be killed while talking to a merchant...

Quick Note on Alyssa's Game:

Alyssa has completed the opening Ascension with Bodhi and Irenicus and is weighing her options heading into Demon Battle I.

I'll post more on the battle soon, for now I'll merely note that it did not go well- primarily because something glitchy/buggy prevented Alyssa's primary tactical move from working.

Regrettably, Balthazar was annihilated within a few rounds. I've never seen him fall in the opening of battle one. Perhaps that's common in the SCS version though?

Anyhoo. Alyssa will be moving on to Demon Battle I shortly.

Best,

A.

Alyssa v. Ascension Irenicus (or A Disastrous Victory)

Alyssa's opening Ascension fight went well in the sense that she prevailed without taking significant damage. It was a disater in every other sense. Her buffs stopped Irenicus cold as expected. And she took him down quick with a minimalist approach. Aside from that, nothing worked. She heads into Demon Battle I sans Balthazar and low on abilities.

The opening buffs were Alyssa's standards with some scroll and potion buffs layered in: Pro Evil, Blur, Mirror Image, Resist Fear, Minor Spell Deflection, Stoneskins, Improved Invibility, Spell Immunity: Divination, Spell Immunity: Abjuration, ProMW, Improved Haste, Spell Turning, Protection from Energy. The Level 5s were taken through Chain and were also loaded into a Spell Trigger for later use. Sequencers were also loaded but never used. The nonrenewable buffs included a full green scroll complement, Potion of Mind Focusing, Potion of Power, Oil of Speed, Potion of Invulnerability, and Potion of Frost Giant Strength. With the buffs and her items, she had +100% immunity to elemental and magical damage as well as immunity to all weapons. II+SI:A+SI:S+Spell Shield kept it all in place.

Here we see the opening. Irenicus and Bodhi on the left, a Fallen Solar on each side. Slayer Imoen on top of Alyssa.
Image IPB

As soon as the battle began, Alyssa headed North. A lot happened while she was running...
Image IPB
Image IPB

Her intent was to execute Improved Alacrity->Time Trap Stack-> Mislead->Blackblade of Disaster. This is one of the most devetasting moves that M/Ts have available to them. It can get you up to 18 or so rounds of 100-300 damage backstabs at 6 APR.  It's completely unreasonable- especially given that you can be completey invulnerable via buffs during the time it takes to set it all up. All you need to do is find some time to get off IA and some space to get down the traps.

Alyssa had her time. And she apparently had her space as well: she had tested for nearby enemies using Hide in Shadows first and as expected was able to lay down the traps without an enemy nearby dialog.
Image IPB

But when she went to lure an enemy toward the end of time, no traps were there.

Bummer.

Balthazar? How are you doing?
Image IPB

Blinded by Bodhi's Abyssal Darkness I see. Yeah. She tried that one on me too. Check back with me when you can see again ok?

He never checked back. Alyssa never saw him again.

Double Bummer. :(

At least Immy is free to go home...
Image IPB

Anyhoo. Depending on the circumstances, Alyssa is either obscenely overpowered or scrapping to get by. It was time for some scraping.

She started by trying Alesia's method for dropping Jon Jon: Dispelling Arrow-> Asp's Nest.
Image IPB

That worked. The Poison shut him down. The Sling finished him.
Image IPB

Onto Bodhi.

Bodhi, of course, was on Alesia's side when she visited the Throne. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect from her in SCS. With her regen rate, decent AC, and script, she proved to be a nuisance. Eventually Alyssa just got fed up and Imprisoned her. She'll need to be dealt with before Mel and the 5 arrive- they'll definitely cast Freedom. But at least she's out of the picture for now.
Image IPB

Finally the Fallen Solars.

This was a little odd. They Teleported Without Error down by one of the portals forcing a range fight which the Sling and the Reflex won of course. Not sure why they chose to do that...
Image IPB

Strange battle. But done. We'll see how the Demon Battles go. I can imagine then giving Alyssa grief- especially the first one since she's low on abilties. She may have to dig deep into the Bag of Holding.

Best,

A.

Grunn, LN human male monk
I'm ready for a quick look round Watchers Keep. Two vampiric wraiths attack but I'm buffed and quickly remove them, a pair of poison mists and five mephits. My buffed saving throws are -9, -5, -4, -8 and -4 with so no need for a potion of invulnerability when checking traps, just need to avoid anything with no save. I emerge a bit later at level 18 (level drain trap and wraith drain), but Sister Garlena restores me while I am selling the items I don't want from the entrance level. I have added a potion case, ammo belt and returning dart to my equipment.

Aran Linvail can vaguely remember me as I demand to leave for Brynnlaw. Parisa takes 1 kick, Del 3 and Valen 2. Goodnight ladies. About 45 seconds later Perth the Adept has an unfortunate accident and I flick his infinite spellbook to Spell Turning and leave. Another minute or two and I am talking to a co-ordinator about the chunked lizardmen and air elemental outside. I ask him if his name is Sucineri and he gets annoyed. I wake up in a jar, missing my special abilities so a good job I have some strength potions hidden away (Monk 22: Hardiness).

Bodhi wants to play cat and mouse. There's nothing here I want though so use a GWW to drop a bunch of umber hulks then drop a sunray in the middle of mummies and ghasts. A rest allows another sunray to hit another group of undead including a lich (I'm sure I hear hearty laughter from the rotting corpse of a nearby dwarf kensai - so this is the resting place of Kaxir). I run away and use a spell turning before returning to the lich but my fists cannot damage it. I carry on for another hit or two before realising this is not protective buffs but I need a +4 weapon and Daystar is used to do the job. I slip back into the shadows and tidy up the badly burnt undead that chased me away from the lich.

Dace Sontan fails to last my GWW and I stake him before borrowing a hand and a crystal shard. Bodhi doesn't fancy takin on a mirrored slayer with spell turning despite my earlier Sunray not doing anything to her or her vampires. Four minotaurs are the final enemies to fall before I leave (Monk: 24, Power Attack).

Oh no. I've opened a trapped wardrobe NO: NOT THE WARDROBE SEARCHING FOR THE PIRATE HORN - NONONO, instant death on way thanks to auto-pilot stupidity I manage to beat the orb-type of trap effect out of the door and wipe my brow. Can't believe I just did that. Anyway, should have got a screenshot while I was there.

Saemon Havarian is waiting for me at the inn. Fetch the pirate horn he says. Don't go near the wardrobe he adds. Right. Moments later I am standing by his side at the dock, having been quick enough to grab the horn without anybody calling the guards.

Felt like a quick Spellhold session there but would have had to hang my head in shame if that trap had got me for a second no-reload.

UD14;

@Alesia_BH, So traps aren’t allowed in the final Ascension?

Book keeping:

Nalia & I both needed a boost in order to learn all the scroll we had available... fortunately I just happen to know a potion girl.
Nalia: “How lucky for her I’m sure!”

I just stopped to ask him about a leather jacket for Nalia... honest:

Image IPB  Image IPB  Image IPB

The tanner got away while his good buddy (mage?) called in support but auspiciously for us he picked un-dead and Viconia just flipped them onto our side.

Rumble in the temple district:

Image IPB  Image IPB

I wanted an anti-un-dead weapon & yes, maybe we got a little cocky. The battle started ok but then powerful chaos sent most of us berko... only Nalia remained sane!

Image IPB  Image IPB

She figured that was probably it so just went ahead and fired her triple ‘Skull Trap’ alpha into the anarchy... desperate times and all that.

Image IPB

We got away with it (this time)... Nalia dispatched the last three while under attack from her own side and she even slapped a bubble on the BFF.

Valando: “What a woman!”

p.s I’ll upload some photos as soon as photobucket realises that flash 11 is out now and resets their server.

Edit: Yippee, My old imgur account leaps to the rescue.

They are allowed. Others have used them in the past and Alyssa was able to use a few later in that same battle. That's why I'm not clear on what happened.

I suppose it's possible that in the split when the game was unpaused in between the HIS test and Set Time Trap activation, an invisible Solar crossed the treshold. But then why no message?

Not sure.

Anyhoo. It's over now and Alyssa has made it to the battle with Mel and The Five. The only casaulty of the Time Trap episode was that Imprisonment scroll which Alyssa used on Bodhi. Had the traps gotten down she could have just shredded her instead.

I'll post on the demon battles once Photobucket is working again.

Best,

A.

Btw. Alyssa made what could be a significant strategic error just prior to Demon Battle III. It may be possible to work around it, but I am concerned heading into the final fight.

Just a quick note. Vaquen is battling his way through Irenicus dungeon with Jaheira, Minsc and Imoen. I thought YOu could rest by the dryads, but apparently not. We have tough battles with the druegars and needing a lot more arrows than we got, but managing. If Vaquen wasn't such a good tank, not sure where this little rag-tag group would be...

Made it to the 2nd level and recruited Yoshimo -- mephit portals our next target.

Using V21 SCS II. Same weidu log as last time.

Btw: Resting by the Dryads definitely works in prior versions of SCS. I wouldn't be surprised if v21 is different in that regard though. I didn't notice a note in the readme but it could be an undocumented change (either that or I didn't look close enough.:) )

Interesting. It looks like USSNorway can Photobucket now but I still can't. :(

Edit: Just saw USSNorways edit. Never mind...

Btw. I'm glad Nalia saved the day!

The d-heads turned off the old account server when they upgraded to their new trial one... the new improved bucket is currently working but a step back wards IMO.
