I'm sure I could just have the party run away, though the enemy did cast Chaos during the fight. But then, can someone please tell me what would be the point of adding content that doesn't get experienced?

I completely agree with you in that matter! Thats why I never leave unexplored areas behind in my runs. And if I installed SCS and Ascension I definitely want to experience all stuff that they can offer. Moreover if I installed pre-buffs for mages/priests I tend to wait for them to trigger (so no preemptive attacks on *blue* enemies). But as Alesia rightly pointed, traveling invisible allows you to be READY for the ambush and then continue to act in the circumstances. As for the scroll of Invisibility 10' Radius (if I remember correct) I bought it right at the start: Waukeen's Promenade (spell merchant, Adventurer's Mart), Slums or somewhere nearby.

And best of luck in your next run - SCS definitely worth an effort!

Someone approaches and I must prepare. This massive buff-fest consists of hiding in the shadows (lazy monk), although I could equip the amulet of Seldarine for 108% magic resistance. Illasera greets me with a threat but I am still almost in the shadows and she stands there all unprotected. There is a pillar nearby so I do a superhero loop (hiding in the shadows as I pass behind the pillar) and return to stand behind her. My WW blows hit hard and fast but she still manages to mirror image and summon a worg - what a quick caster. I add GWW to kill her, pick up her gear and finish the worg before I am teleported away by a huge blue solar. Once we have spoken she vanishes and Sarevok appears. I restore him and convince him to join me without an oath, then hand him the Sword of Chaos before releasing him from my service. An imp called Cespenar is annoyed when I refuse a number of equipment upgrades as all I want is an improved cloak of protection +2 to stash away.

Pocket Plane Trial 1, Gavid and the Retribution Horde. First commoners, then elven warriors. Followed by Aran Linvail, Ellisime and Duke Eltan. (Monk: 39, GWW). With the trial complete I find I am able to enter and leave this place at will, and throw a lot of my inventory into a handy container that only I (and Sarevok) have access to. I remove the cloak of cheese mirroring and save it for special occasions.

It appears I have no choice but to head to Saradush where Melissan and some Il-Khan soldiers are arguing, allowing me to cast hardiness then WW. to defeat them. Melissan tells me I must act quickly if Saradush is to be saved - I'm looting the corpses as quickly as is possible and you can't expect me to pass up this opportunity. I enter the temple (a magnificient structure larger on the inside than the outside) and speak to Sister Farielle. She refuses to help me poo in the sewers due to my alignment and turns to leave so I force-talk to her and purchase a scroll of raise dead. I can't find the words to help a child so back to my pocket plane for the rod of resurrection to use on his father.

I do a few minor quests (stopping fights, solving a break-in, finding shelter) then rescue Mateo and Ardic Santele. Vampires drain me to level 35 so I ask for healing at a temple rather than use a scroll and purchase 3 more as a precaution. The Saradush prison is next, then Gromnir. I tidy up after a soldier and Eler Had, but Melissan wants me to deal with Yaga Shura. I promise to consider it right after I've sold another bag full of valuable equipment.

Feeling very easy after my recent Ascension runs but trying not to be complacent - the black dragon has shown how quickly things can change.

The main thing I learned dealing with SCS2 ambushes was that party mages need to do what NPC mages do -i.e., protect themselves before casting offensive spells. You absolutely can't afford not to be stoneskinned if you're a mage.

The main problem with pre-buffed ambushes (particulary on long travels) is that you can't be as properly buffed as enemies can. And their mages (being well protected themselfs) immediately throw a disabling stuff like Chaos, Horror, Confusion etc. and stoneskins are poor consolation in that matter... Being Invisible on the other hand could provide you an opportunity to prepare, that's why I personally see it far more crucial.

Yup. I'm content with that personally. Ambushers should be better prepared for combat than ambushees- it's sort of the nature of the situation.

It also makes sense to me that invisibility would thwart ambush tactics and that there would be times when it was wisest to simply slip past.

I quite agree  with you :) That's why I run out that Orog's ambush - I was unprepared and with exhausted spellbook so little chance to survive. And my Wisdom is a bit higher then Minsc's...

Into ToB at the 3rd attempt - is it just me that auto-pilots into the left hand SoA button and then has to quit and restart as there is no back button to get to ToB once this is done. Anyway;

The North Forest soldiers are no longer pestering a friendly merchant. I sell a pile of loot then pick up their loot and sell that to the merchant as well. A Master Wraith (drained to level 37) and his mists are dealt with in the Forest of Mir. A bit further in and a skeleton cleric and skeleton warrior are down with another warrior badly injured when a skeleton assassin hits me. I'm badly wounded so move away and into the shadows. A face full of magic missiles proves the shadows are no help against the mage so I stand away and heal before moving in with Spell Turning and GWW. Moving away and summoning Kitthix lures the assassin out and a GWW deals with it. I speak to Nyalee and return to Saradush for a restoration before continuing on to the Matching Mountains.

I allow the group of Bhaalspawn  near the temple (Tibbit and co) to leave with their lives then use the girdle of bluntness, a potion of absorbtion, hardiness, Ilbratha and GWW. I enter the Fire Giant temple and drop two fire giants plus one elite fire giant (Monk: 40, GWW) then the same again - six in one attack without retreating those buffs worked well with AC -15 and -14 crushing, finished with 128/133hp). The next group do better as my images expire and I have to run after killing two. I try to use my sling but never seem to use it before the giants reach me, so I hide and wait. I glug potions of mind focusing and heroism, kill one elite and scare a second. I chase him and the game crashes so I will have to re-do the temple.

Load SoA. Grrr. Quit. Load ToB. Re-do. I cannot kill these fire trolls. After trying everything I find my genie has a Melf Acid Arrow which kills one troll, so have to rest and kill them one at a time. I grab a dagger to kill a magic golem and then plane rest. Two more fire trolls force another rest the second is immune to attack when I return having been knocked down before I left, so I hit it plenty, fire the Melf (and add a CTRL-Y when it should be dead). The other side of the temple is easier to deal with and I finally manage to power-down the force blocking the stairwell.

I kill five more giants, plane rest and return for Berenn and Imix, although the latter has excessive fire shields that badly injure me. I step back, lay on hands and deal with the two burning men. Then I am almost killed by a spike rising from the floor so cloakshift into a troll as Kitthix looks around. I have two burning hearts and a ton of loot so plane rest again and return to Nyalee via the friendly merchant Karthis al-Hezzar. A pair of shambling mounds resist my fists so I GWW Celestial Fury instead, having to step back once to heal and a second time for a berserk warrior to shield me. Another plane rest and it is time to find Yaga Shura. He runs, but my WW attack has eight more hits and a final miss - he is nearly dead assume he cannot die at this stage but is promising to return later.

I hide from his men and race to the south-west, no sign of him until I turn to go, at which point he arrives with his lieutenants. I move away to cast hardiness and mirror image before sneaking back. His mage is first but contingencies, so I kill the cleric and fighter as the mage casts a timestop. Once that is done I remove the mislead and GWW the mage to leave Yaga alone with me. I run, hide and return to loot his companions. He is chasing me but his army are blind to me so I can wait my time. I switch girdles and glug a potion of absorbtion and the game crashes again.

Load SoA. Grr. Quit. Load ToB. This time I glug potions of heroism and absorbtion, starting with the girdle of bluntness. I remove the mislead, drop the fighter and start on a thief - no sign of the cleric. I'm badly wounded as the timestop hits and take more damage when it resumes. I'm also blocked in so glug a potion of invisibility and run as everybody mills around 10hp, curse the crash. A true sight is active so I hide across the bridge this time. Yaga is followed by his cleric so I hit him with a divine bullet +2 and draw Yaga Shura away before returning with a GWW fist. As the cleric falls I move to a soldier and finish the GWW on him, then move to two more soldiers and use another GWW on them, adding five of the GWW to Yaga Shura and badly injuring him.

Back into the shadows to find the mage. She contingencies again so I remove her illusion then retreat to glug a healing potion and finish her off. With the four lieutenants dead and looted it is time to deal with the main man. Hardiness and mirror image are applied and then I run to finish him. First a solar then Melissan delay my looting of his corpse but I get there in the end.

Pocket Plane Challenge 2: Evil Grunn (the other evil one at least). He drains me (level 32) but I've killed him, and Tamoko doesn't last long either. Semaj and Angelo almost get me but Angelo stops to glug a potion so I lay on hands then hide to swap girdles. Angelo makes a mistake by trying to fight against my next GWW and Semaj has buffed to melee me - fool. Saradush has been razed to the ground so instead I head to Watchers Keep so Sister Garlena can remove the level drains.

That took a long time - both crashes were a fair way into extended battles.

Sorry about those crashes you are having Gate70. Nevertheless, your monk is looking good. I can't remember if monks can use axes, if so the Frostweaver axe (from Nalia's keep) can kill those fire trolls. Also, I believe the Blackblood club can kill it too, and that's definitely monk usable.

And that's a great tip about the Temple merchant at Watcher's Keep - I need to remember that, not many temples available in ToB.

No axes but Blackblood is a good thought, will have to remember not to sell that in future. Will look through the weapon list in more detail to see what else a monk could use - I tend to stick with fists and forget to keep weapons for special occasions.

The temples and stores in ToB are limited in terms of when you can access them, I try to keep a lot of money at hand so I can stock up on useful items (think I still have 7 restoration scrolls but will only use them if a temple isn't around for example).

Forrest the gnomish fighter/mage entering BG 2 no-reload challenge...
Traveling with: Minsc, Jaheira, Imoen, Misty
(note this is not trilogy run and is primarily to learn SCS for BG 2 and ToB)

There was a man in Faerun named Forrest, who had the Taint but was unaware of it. He lived a rather uneventful life, being full-time tech support for Farmer Joe's Shovel Store ("No, you put the other end of the shovel into the ground."). He had a beautiful friend named Misty who kept him in line with the occasional punch to the ribs. She realized she was pretty good at this and decided became a monk, a specialist in unarmed combat. Forrest realized too, he needed improved defenses if he was going to continue to be Misty's friend, so he decided to be both a fighter to wear armor and dabble in the arcane, so do some spells to protect himself.
Regardless, Irenicus somehow learned Forrest had the Taint, and captured Forrest. Misty was a witness and she was captured as well. The friends awoke in a dank dungeon and found three others who all claimed to know them, though Misty and Forrest have never seen them before. However, they WERE in a dungeon, a bit tougher than tech support for Farmer Joe's, so Forrest accepted their help. This is the story of Forrest's and Misty's adventure in Amn.

(note to those following my previous runs -- I made sure this character knew invisibility 10' and also is chaotic good so gets it too from his familiar and of course plain old invisibility too. He can't cast stone skin yet, as he's not high enough level, we'll see if that becomes a problem or not...)

Setup:
Throne of Bhaal Expansion
Official ToB patch
SCS II ver. 21 with improved encounters (it's the same setup as the last two runs. For some reason I paste the Weidu.log in here it loses all the carriage returns so didn't want to do that again.)

Forrest initial stats:
Image IPB

Misty initial stats:

Adventure of Forrest and Misty continue...
Traveling with: Minsc, Jaheira, Misty, Yoshimo

Forrest met a Genie. Genies aren't known for their kindness, so Forrest declined to play the genie's game. Numerous Druegar were encountered, which sucked down the party's heal potions as fast as they were picking them up. A big problem happened after the haste wore off after clearing the library of hostiles...the party was fatigued! And even though Forrest knew that if they tried to rest they would be ambushed, the entire party complained about being tired, despite knowing they cannot until they escape. Was a bit annoying...

For the mephtis on the Air Plane we had a few summons, and Imoen showed herself first, protected by Globe of Invulnerability. She withdrew then the summons and party defeated the mephits. Practically no heal potions at this point, but we needed the genie's sword for Minsc.

For the mephit portals, we still had no heal potions. Decided we better use a haste potion and heroism potion, we must succeed. Fortunately the party did in fact defeat the mephits and their portals without casualty, though Yoshimo was taking a beating.

In the next room a mage was fighting a thief. Yoshimo managed to throw one of his special traps. This didn't kill the mage, but it did allow the party to kill the mage before it could erect its defenses. Good thing, as heal potions are still in quite short supply.

We tried web against a group of druegar guarding the path to a large pipe and bridge. Wasn't real effective, but it did allow us to fight them piece meal so am sure that helped.

The party declined to fight the vampire and battle mage in a room. Forrest and gang did fight everything, else, using every spell the party had (really). Even Imoen was completely out of spells! Heal potions still in short supply...

For the last group before the exit, Forrest's familiar put the whole party invisible and turned off the AI. The party then ignored the backstabbing enemies and ran for the exit. Yoshimo was somehow seen, not sure how. So Minsc tossed him an extra healing potion, Yoshimo used it, ran out the door and hid and the party finally exited Irenicus' Dungeon without further incident.

Imoen was arrested by the Cowled Wizards, as was Irenicus. The party sold their junk and Forrest identified everything. Minsc and Jaheira have magical melee weapons (well so does Forrest but certainly don't want him in the front). Everyone has magical ammo, and saved the session here. Circus will be our next target and also our last party member will be obtained.

EDIT: Interesting side note -- despite having 95% chance of learning spells, Forrest flubbed at least 5 spell scribes! Guess the computer interprets 95% chance differently than I do...

Angus got through the Underdark OK. In Spellhold had to use a charge of our ressurection wand as Anomen got killed due to hold and cloudkill combination.

Keldorn needed to be ressurected by Anomen after meeting up with the Illithids. We had to wait for Anomen to recover in the same battle as he lost too much intelligence.

On exiting, realised that at some stage the party will have to return through the drow army as we forgot to visit a number of areas. :(

Grunn, LE human male monk (forgot his earlier alignment change).
At the Oasis Janis Tombelthen and his men seem able to trace my shadowy movement so after 4 or 5 GWW's I add a hardiness and then another 3 or 4 GWW's. Janis has equipped his men well and I unload their gear on the merchant before heading on.

Amkethran is a friendly place where Captain Erelon decides to use me for target practice, Saemon Havarian hardly has to trick a pair of mercenaries into attacking me and I have to rescue the daughter of the mayor. Marlowe wants me to help against Vongoethe, and after saving the girl I destroy the lich, then his skeletons There seems to be an issue with the Sling of Seeking - only hitting skeleton archers for 2 damage per GWW hit with strength 22.

Balthazar points the way to Sendai. I could look around but instead I ask the woodcutter about the graves until he sheds his disguise and attacks. One of my attackers stuns me twice (smite?) but I'm able to keep my wits together and kill them all. Once I find the enclave entrance a host of enemies fall before me. Thelynn'ss may be a drow kensai of some repute but a hardiness mirror GWW sees him dead without injury and I clear the barracks in relative safety. A slavemaster also falls in one GWW and then I am dealing with a lich called Odamaron.

Ogremoch almost has me but the old 'slam a door in his face' trick works. I glug two healing potions, re-cast hardiness and GWW the life out of him, then plane rest for Diaytha. Vampire first, then a demon knight followed by the hive mother and Abishai. Diaytha takes five hits then Captain Egeissag falls for a resurrected spectator geas. Sendai is running out of ideas about how to stop me (a poisoned meal usually does the trick but don't tell her) and sends mind flayers to their doom too - smite helping keep their tentacles out of my way.

Sendai1 falls to WW. Sendai2 casts fire shield and time stop but I'm over by Sendai1, checking on the fire shield. I get bored of waiting so start throwing the crimson dart at her. She casts Gate & Gate70 smirks since she isn't protected from evil but Grunn has the sensate amulet. Grunn switches to fists and kills the pit fiend, causing Sendai2 to query his compassion. Nope, just don't want anybody else stealing my glory.

Sendai2 moves closer and casts maze twice I really ought to look up if 98% magic resistance or the cloak of mirroring make me entirely safe or if I should add a Spell Turning. Her fire shield has burnt out so I slap her around until she expires. Sendai3 backstabs me twice as I fight her drow guard, forcing me to glug and run. She's slow so I hide and return to finish the guards although a fireshield there injures me again. Note to self, need fire resistance. Sendai3 takes a punch but hits me hard so I run, hide and glug. I fail to stun her but out-melee her and hide before the next guards arrive. I drop one as it is casting (true sight no doubt) then the other GWW's so I stun it. I'm reasonably wounded still so write in my journal before sneaking up on Sendai4.

She has a berserk state expire so I GWW her and hide from Sendai5. Her two drow cast GWW and Hardiness, so I stun GWWdrow and wear Hardinessdrow down. They've dropped potions of healing so I glug one and sneak up on Sendai5 between true sight activations. Her stoneskins fade so a contingency triggers and I remove the mislead before stepping away from her fireshield. Out comes the crimson dart to hang mid-air as Sendai5 casts timestop. A dart triggers mislead, fists then more darts fly as a banshee wail is cast. Sunfire is next, but the fireshield has gone so my fists make short work of Sendai5.

Sendai6 has two more drow. One dies immediately while the other casts GWW only to be stunned. Into the shadows again and I am running out of space so pack a lot of potions into a case. Sendai6 is a teleport specialist, allowing me to hide after each hit until she panics. I wait in the shadows until she stops and hit her twice more.

Sendai7 decides to help her two drow, hiding as they die. I run and hide too - what now! She poisons her weapon - I had to ask. Kitthix won't stand for that and I stand ready. A single hit kills Kitthix but I can add five hits in return and Sendai7 is dead. Would the real Sendai please step forward, I've saved a lot of abilities that I'd like to share with you.

Four invisible stalkers are no concern to me, but Sendai is hogging the centre of the room and I cannot hide. We'll see about that but first I need to kill a spider and skeleton warrior. I have almost done this when I get hit by implosion (60 damage and held), but moments later I have moved and glugged a potion. Sendai has mirrored and hasted, but the skeleton warrior is my priority. As I chunk it Sendai teleports to a pedestal so I hide on the opposite one and sneak up on her only to have a wand of harm used. I run and glug as another wand it used - resisted. I summon a berserk warrior and GWW another skeleton warrior but Sendai casts a death spell so back to me against her.

She summons two more skeleton warriors so I use the dirty aura to GWW her. She teleports away but I'm on her instantly. My GWW expires as she is badly wounded and I move away to prevent her summons trapping me in. She casts heal then malisons me so I use the ring of air control to restore my saving throws (-5 to -9). I've finished her summons but she has cast pierce magic. I cast spell turning as she FoD's, then I have her injured and two more summons destroyed. Another four summons and Sendai casts harm again, but I have hit her hard enough to destroy her essence and the harm doesn't register. The Solar speaks to me again, then as I have many abilities left I GWW the remaining skeletons and loot the corpse of Sendai.

Pocket Plane Challenge 3: The Slayer. Hardiness and 5 GWW's are enough to complete this challenge.

Sendai is a nightmare for my parties but a well equipped solo monk has very little to fear there, not sure I've ever had such an easy run (other than the one harm).

Interesting Sendai Battle Gate70. By the way, there is no save vs. maze, so it was your 98% magic resistance that saved you. That did mean you had a 1/50 chance each time she cast it of having your game end, but you beat the odds that time.

& the cloak of mirroring which was worn the entire battle just in case but doesn't block her harm though (although that might have been because it was from a wand?)

Grunn, LE human male monk
Draconis is blocking my way. I have hardiness and the ring of air control active and as he starts casting I use a WW with The Answerer in the hope of reducing his AC (by 2) with each hit. His spell is interrupted but stoneskin and invisible stalker contingencies save him. The stalkers cannot injure me so I ignore them and I have to laugh as he attacks with an ineffective weapon during a timestop. I'll beat seven shades out of him while saving my special abilities then. He contingencies PfMW so I dig out an old dagger and hit him for 16 then another 16. I switch back to my fists and pummel him some more. I think I've upset him as he transforms into a huge dragon and spits at me.

Brown dragon breath is acidic and I take huge damage so run to look at my green scrolls. Cold, electricity and undead but no acid - this is called preparation. He is summoning invisible stalkers so I glug potions of regeneration and extra healing, then invulnerability on the run as he chases me. I summon Kitthix in one corner, cast hardiness in another and prepare to GWW if Kitthix can gain his attention. Kitthix fails to do this and I immediately drop to 19hp. Glug glug glug (healing and a mind focusing), all the while Draconis is summoning (and injuring with his breath) stalkers. So long as I run I am relatively safe but I'm not confident about being able to fight him. I move in and land 3 hits with GWW and The Answerer before he stoneskins and buffets. I repeat this a few times then try with my fists in the hope his armour class is shot to pieces.

There are so many stalkers I am at risk of becoming trapped, but his attacks may clear them and I have to risk it (this is about 25% of them). He buffets me through the stalkers and I hide so they follow, and return to fight mano a dragono (and it is good to see stalkers taking collateral damage). He has healed somewhat but my attacks are punishing and I'm starting to enjoy it just as my next hit does him in. I decide to do a headcount on the stalkers and get to 12 (Draconis has killed at least as many if not more), no wonder I was having trouble running around.

That was tough even at the xp cap, had 2 1 GWW left out of 13 14. Not sure if The Answerer hit reduced armour class with stoneskin up, might have to check the effect. Had several solid hits with the sword and at least as many on stoneskins of which Draconis had something like 4 or 5 castings.

Grats on Draconis victory. However as to the above, I am not familiar with a harm "wand". However the harm spell targets the CASTER not you! All the caster has to connect with a melee hit in 30 sec (not sure exact duration but its pretty short). and it drops you to one, your magic resistance doesn't come into play as far as I know. That's why it's viable for Melissan (well if you have enough, and got rid of her stoneskins) despite her magic resistance.

Grunn, LE human male monk Final update :(

A GWW takes care of a greater wyvern then I melee several lesser earth elementals. Diving through a pools sees four frost salamanders killed and a potion of breath obtained. A second tunnel leads to an area guarded by kuo-toa and greater water elementals. An olhydra has a cold fireshield so after badly wounding it I switch to the crimson dart. For my efforts I retrieve an old rope and an older hand.

The third pool leads to a large dragon, so I take the fourth and am attacked by floating skulls. Their spells are ineffective so I remove them in safety before sub-contracting a job to Bondari, Tim and Nanoc. After a slight mis-understanding they return with an elder orb eye and some bronze pantalettes. The eye is exchanged for a scroll of reversal and I bargain my way into the lair of Abazigal.

He is aided by frost salamanders so I throw darts while watching Abazigal use a hardiness and kai (a kensai then). Once his salamanders are down I use Kitthix and a WW to barely injure him then GWW and The Answerer to injure him (5 hits, AC should be 10 less than it was). I trade a few blows and heal, as does he and then on our third encounter he hurts me but I've annoyed him enough to reveal his true form. I switch cloaks before glugging a potion and circling him, observing a stoneskin then a spell trigger (improved haste, righteous magic, armour of faith and heal). Should be fun.

We manage a few laps, me recovering then biding my time (waiting for the haste to expire) as he tries to reduce my electrical resistance and him chasing. After a minute or two I am close enough for one of his wing buffets to hit me and I am thrown into the north wall. He is on top of me and I must run around him to escape as I'm in a slight recess. Two hits are enough for me to bleed my last.

& that was about 15 minutes in human form plus 2 as a dragon. Once the buffet hit that was it from about 90hp, couldn't see any way out as his two attacks were done before I'd got half way round him.

Hard luck Gate, but a valiant effort. Sounds like you were using GWW as your staple attack mode, so should be interesting to see what you can do with a different set of monk HLAs.

Yes, difference between 4APR and 10APR is highly noticable but the real advantage of GWW for a monk is the 1APR to 10APR for a weapon like The Answerer. Something very wrong with the Sling of Seeking in ToB though, maybe I shouldn't have stuck it in a bag of holding.

For standard HLA's hardiness was good but only needed 2-3 of them to balance out GWW. Maybe I could have done more with critical strike but the monk hit/damage was good enough to make me think more attacks was better. Will be interesting to compare to Oversight HLA's next.

Nice work Gate70! Kept it up!

EDIT: I Just saw your last post. Condolences: It was a fine run nonetheless.

Best,

A.

Btw. The mechanics of Harm are a bit peculiar. There are different versions available to the player and foes. I'll note that in my fixpacked installs, a Harm cast by the player creates a +6 enchanted +2 to hit magical weapon which will last for 2 rounds (implemented as 15 seconds). Unlike most weapons, it does not ignore Magic Resistance but does bypass Stoneskins. ProMW can foil it.

I've seen foes use a variety of versions of the spell over the years. Sometimes, it behaves like the PC version. At other times, it is ranged and targeted. I haven't looked into the mechanics of the odd versions enemies get. I don't use the Cloak of Mirroring, but I'm not surprised to hear that it did not offer protection- that would accord with the magical weapon nature of the spell.

That was a great run Gate70! It was nice to see a solo pure melee non-thief kicking behinds. I don't know if Abazigal can see invisibility or not, but if not, invisibility potion may have been an option to fight longer.
