@Gate70.

I'd be interested in seeing either the K->T or the K->M. The Kensai duals are generally considered among the game's most powerful builds, but we've seen surprisingly little of them in our challenges over the years.

I've never dualled a Kensai, but both seem workable in the solo no reload context. I'd be curious to hear what problems Grond0 ran into with the Kensai->Thief.

EDIT: If forced to vote, I'd pick the Kensai->Thief- mostly because I'm interested in trying one someday.

And I'm happy to hear that!
Nice Jon-Jon fight and of course there is an interest on Alicia's prior battles.

Gate wrote...Still thinking at what level he would dual-class, and to thief or mage. Decisions decisions - post from Grond0 in BG1 thread is leading me down the mage path.

And I will push you even further in this direction :) Myself I use thieves mostly to unlock/detrap only and rarely the other their abilities. But what that could mean is: *you do not like thieves? - you just do not know how to cook them right...*. In any case - safe travels in Amn!

Not problems so much as I just found the equipment restrictions a hassle - in particular the difficulty of getting a decent AC.

I know that shouldn't really matter if you use thieving strategies (such as backstabs and traps) and use of the amulet / cloak of shielding can be helpful.  However, for me (and I suspect Gate70) it would be hard to remain patient long enough for that approach to pay off.  I don't think you would have the same problems and a ken-thief would no doubt be a power-house in your handsPosted Image.

@Grond0. Makes sense. A K->T would require care in the the dualing phase: It's not hard to imagine running into trouble with one.

@Serg. Thanks for your comments. I'll try to post a medley of Alicia's late SoA encounters in the relatively near future.

EDIT: For now, I'll just post a humorous aside.

Some of you may have noticed that I have an uncanny knack for screwing up the Underdark Dragon Egg quest. As a matter of fact, I can only recall completing it properly once in all of my playthroughs.

There have been some pretty absurd mishaps, but Alicia's takes the prize.

Alicia was trying to wish up a fresh spellbook before rendezvousing with Solafein and Phaere. After a few uneventfull failures, she had a particularly bad roll and was left with "Everyone in the area, both party members and enemies, become intoxicated" as the most appealing option. Seemed innocent enough, but apparently the denizens of the Underdark don't like free beer: Everyone on the map -from the drow to the duergars- went hostile and charged Alicia...
Posted Image

The ultimate party gone wrong...=]

EDIT 2: This wasn't a complete surprise. I recalled having read that the intoxication option has that effect, but I decided to try it anyway. No regrets: It was amusing. And I'm now one step closer to screwing up the Underdark in everyway humanly possible. Hooray! :P

Alicia v. Illasera: A Tale of Two Battles

Alicia has narrowly defeated Illasera. She has also mercilessly crushed her.

The two fights - the official No Reload battle and a subsequent side experiment to help me learn from my mistakes- do a nice job of illustrating how critical the minutiae can be in No Reload games: The line between death and dominance can be surprisingly thin.

To begin with, a little history may be helpful here. Illasera was my prior elven sorceress, Alanis's nemesis. The first encounter with Illasera was Alanis's most harrowing fight, and at the Throne, ending her was unambiguously priority one. As powerful as Alanis was, the cry "Red Slayers!" sent chills down her spine.

Since those days, I've fought Illasera many times -including a solo with a Transmuter which is among the absolute worst classes to face her with. Entering Alicia's fight with Illasera I found myself remembering those recent trounchings of Illasera rather than the many prior defeats without recalling the exact details that make the differnce between success and failure. That's a recipe for death of course. I'm fortunate that Alicia survived my folly.

Battle One

Alicia's plan here was relatively straightforward. Her intention was to buff under Improved Alacrity, fire up a Teleport Field, and then summon a horde. With the field and bunnies in place, the buffed and secure Alicia should then have been able to get a PI up and running with Improved Alacrity.

Here's the setup.
Posted Image

Looks fine, but Alicia is actually on the brink of death here. I had made two tiny but absolutely crucial mistakes by this point. First, I failed to recall that the cutscense is long enough for ProMW to expire if it had been cast early in the prep window. Second, I neglected to move Alicia out of the range of the Black Reaver Mage's See Enemy Wilting.

Not hard to guess what happened right? The Mage's chain disrupted PI Alicia's Improved Alacrity cast and Illasera hit the real Alicia with on of her deadly dispelling/miscat magic arrows soon after. A ProMw after the Miscast wore off got Alicia out of immediate danger...
Posted Image

but she was now forced to fight under far worse circumstances- with a major difference being that she did not have a PI around to disrupt the Black Reaver Mage's Time Stops.
Posted Image

A few poorly managed PIs later, and Alicia found herself face to face with Illasera (though with most of the Black Reavers out of the picture at this point). Anxious and overeager, I decided to unload her real book rather than replenish and use a PI. Big mistake: There wasn't quite enough umph left in her depleted book to finish Illasera.
Posted Image

Out of spells, and hunted, Alicia became desperate. And while ProMW (scroll)->Time Stop (scroll) -> Slayer Change won the day, this battle could have easily ended Alicia's run.
Posted Image

Battle Two: The Experiment

Ok. So what happens with two minor adjustments: ProMW in a See Enemy Chain and a slightly more northern position? A world of difference.

Setup looks the same huh?
Posted Image

North of Wilting range and with the real Alicia under a full four rounds of ProMW, the PI successfuly cast Improved Alacrity.
Posted Image

The Black Reaver Mage is disrupted and, soon after, killed.
Posted Image

Before long a fresh PI had a clear line of sight to Illasera.
Posted Image

Endgame.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Near death to dominance: Mind the minutiae.

Best,

A.

Regarding Kensai duals: I recently started my very first no-reload game with three characters. I had decided for a Fighter/Illusionist and a Fighter/Thief (Halfling) to start with. I had considered a Kensai>Druid as the last character (dual scimitars + Ironskins (and Barkskin, possibly) seemed like it would be a lot of fun, and I knew I wanted a divine caster). I intended to dual at level 13 for the extra 1/2 apr, but reconsidered once I took a look at the Druid's XP table. Level 14 is 1.5M XP while level 13 is 750K. That's still a considerable amount and I settled for dualling at level 9. Until I realized that at that level I would be better of with a Berserker, so a Bersker>Druid was where it ended.

They have so far greatly exceeded my expectations. I expected them to die without seeing daylight; playing very carefully to minimize even the smallest of risks is not something I have the patience for in the long run. They have just cleared one and a half levels of the watchers keep and have reached levels 10-11. The more battles they win, the more I seem to care about keeping them alive. I hope that they die with honor; surely, sooner or later, they will.

@ Grond0. I didn't see AC as an issue when the potion case is available, the game is full of shadowy corners and there must be some metagame knowledge I can abuse. Will have to check it out sometime.

@ Alesia. Nice write-ups on Illasera. I'm sorely tempted to look for trouble as a K>T.

@ Serg. You're a swashbuckler! I played like that for years, in a party it is hard to do otherwise without slowing things right down. When I started doing solo runs the assassin and bounty hunter suddenly became a lot more interesting but when I revert back to a party they just tag along.

@Ecoris (long time no hear?) I'm pretty sure I did kensai > druid in a party when SoA hit the shelves. My plan was to get ironskins, chaotic commands & something daft like staff of the woodlands for permanent barkskin. He must have been the most resurrected and reloaded character ever while the other 5 party members were far more effective. I've learnt a lot since then but think you're on the right lines as kensai skills for a powergame K>D would be regained very late in the game.

I'm going to stick with mage this time but line up a thief for a future run and then possibly a druid.

edit. & good luck with your runs.

Nael, human male kensai
Quote from journal: “I had a dream (Life... is strength.) Such power in magic, my dedication in the way of the sword is shaken and I am in crisis, at a crossroads.”

As Nael leaves the Graveyard still pondering this dilemma he is asked for help by Wellyn and Tirdir. Nael agrees to help them but Renfeld has even greater needs. He wishes to travel to the docks at night. Nael suggests waiting for morning but Renfeld is insistent.

Habib evolves from a deranged swordsman, beyond a ranged swordsman to become a dead swordsman. Hareishan kills three thieves and vanishes as Nael kills four ruffians. It’s all happening at the Docks, a mad cleric is next but a chunky DUHM/kai combo breaks his concentration and Renfeld can finally be returned.

Nael heads back to the Copper Coronet and soon has a Beastmaster and his animals defeated.

Nael has reached level 10 with 504k xp and is considering an early dual class (I suspect the wait for an extra 1/2apr isn't worth it in a no-reload).

Alesia, awesome reports. Drunken Duergar, getting hit by the Slayer in Hell, then becoming the Slayer yourself to narrowly defeat Illasera -- such drama! Well done!

Gate, I'm excited to see where your Kensai will end up! Good luck!

Nael, human male Kensai Mage
Kitthix stares as Nael puts away his swords and picks up a discarded quarterstaff after deciding to become a mage. Freeing a boy sees Nael improve his skills (level 2), freeing a girl (level 3) and freeing Hendak (level 4). Nael struggles to kill a few guards then observes as Hendak chunks Lehtinan (level 7).

Nael has a few scrolls in his backpack and some more left in a barrel outside the tavern. He returns inside and rests before summoning a pseudo-dragon for his backpack. Some interesting touch spells are also memorised (chill, ghoul and vampiric) then Nael casts a stoneskin before heading to the Promenade.

Orog slavers quickly punish Kiitthix and a charmed slaver then remove the stoneskins before Nael can finish a ghoul-touched orog. Nael departs with his tail between his legs but with his life intact. He has also learnt a valuable lesson - target the enemy with vampiric touch and not yourself.

A few more stored scrolls are memorised and a few cheap scrolls (invisibility, resist fear, mirror image, knock) purchased while Friends is active. (Just to remind; memorising scrolls in BGT gives diddly xp).

Back to the Temple district where High Watcher Oisig asks Nael to investigate the Cult of the Unseeing Eye and Guardian Telwyn asks for a sculpture to be commissioned. On his way to the Docks Nael picks up a job from the Order of the Radiant Heart too. At the Docks Nael speaks to Renal Bloodscalp then Mae’Var who describes an arduous job involving the retrieval of a gaudy necklace. As he finishes the sentence Nael hands the very item over (level 8) and is told to speak to Edwin.
Posted Image

Edwin wants Nael to deal with Rayic Gethras but another test is required first. Nael buffs in Valygar’s house and goes in search of Prebek & Sanasha only to discover that MGoI doesn’t work against confusion and doesn’t last long enough to beat horror or slow. Nael has summoned Kitthix but his summon monster spell was halted due to the confusion. Kitthix has quickly killed two goblins but is also scared and standing idle. The final goblin and two mages are left to attack Nael while summoning a rabid dog. Nael recovers before Kitthix and uses Magic Missile to injure the dog but Kitthix is killed and then the dog is unsummoned before Nael can kill it. Nael casts chill touch to kill the final goblin so the three mages can play a slow game of melee.

A long drawn out affair sees Nael chill both opponents but Prebek and Nael both re-skin so the battle extends further. Sanasha is paralyzed twice by a ghoul touch then Prebek is unskinned and killed. 3 more chill hits are too much for Sanasha.
Posted Image

(2 Stoneskins, ghost armour, mirror image and no big-hitters saved Nael there)

Rylock permits entry to the Harper HQ; casting knock to grab a helm of charm protection sees him save against a spell (11 against 9 and no idea what the trap was so need to be more careful). Once “Monty” is captured (level 9) . Ikert buys some trinkets before Xzar is assassinated by Montaron Lucette.

On to the house of Rayic Gethras. His mephits could be fatal, but Stoneskin, Ghost Armour, SI:Evocation, Mirror Image and Haste allow Nael the chance to melee with a staff spear +2. Three sets of Magic Missiles help to clear the room.
Posted Image

A rest at the Ships Bounty is taken before dragging two stone golems downstairs to play with a hasted lesser air elemental. Nael is the target for the first golem while the elemental is targeted by the second, but both are easily killed (thought they would be far more challenging than that).
Posted Image

No doubt Rayic Gethras will be made of sterner stuff so Nael retreats to the inn and considers what strategy to use (from memory he needs to neutralise fireball, horror, maze, hold, a lightning bolt and summons. Should be fun, thinking SI:Evocation, Kitthix as a distraction then summon an elemental  while out of sight).

Mage 9 (Kensai 10). 260 kills in BG1, 475 total, Ulvaryl.
* Quarterstaff, * Dagger (***** long sword, ** dual weapon style).

 Nael, human male Kensai>Mage
A badly timed sleep sees Nael wander back too early; the 4am thieves meeting with Salia attack. Nael decides to melee them and after killing them returns to the inn to rest until a more sensible hour, dreaming of the days when he was a Kensai and such enemies could be trivially brushed aside.

Rayic Gethras uses stun and PW:death to remove a lesser air elemental, fireballs Kitthix and uses an invisible stalker plus two sword spiders to kill a summoned phase spider. Nael uses some Magic Missiles to soften the sword spiders before skewering them on his staff spear. This has involved fighting on each floor and Rayic has cast shadow door, stoneskin, hold person and another fireball - Nael has been using the stairs regularly so only just sees each spell cast and avoids the effects of the last two.

The invisible stalker has removed the final skin from Nael so he retreats through Renal Bloodscalps HQ and returns with a final stoneskin to see what Rayic has left while the stalker remains outside the HQ. The Ring of Air Control is used for Improved Invisibility, then a Spell Thrust is used as Rayic starts with Lightning Bolt, Flame Arrow and 3xMelf Acid Arrows. Nael has switched to Chill Touch by this time and the 3rd Arrow is matched with a fatal 3rd chill.
Posted Image

Edwin has another job; Nael is unable to threaten Marcus until he casts Friends and immediately he can intimidate the merchant. Result (level 10, 1 more to go until inactive class is available again). The next task is for Mae’Var and Nael returns with a dagger retrieved via subterfuge. Back to Edwin who finally provides evidence of treachery on the part of Mae’Var, Renal Bloodscalp wants Nael to kill Mae’Var, which seems suitable payback for the earlier ambush leading to the capture for Irenicus.

The time is not right though (325k xp, would be nice to be at 375k and have the Kensai active). Instead Nael heads to the Government district where he speaks to Madeen, Tolgerias, Delon and Sir Sarles. An ambush sees Nael kill a mage, cleric and three thugs without injury so he is starting to feel confident about self defence. On to the Promenade to speak to Jerlia the ore merchant then the slums to meet a Duergar called Unger Hilldark. Back to Sir Sarles, Guardian Telwyn, Dawnbringer Sain, Lt Aegisfield, Reynald de’Chatillon, Rampah, Rose Bouquet, Bel Dalemark, Rejiek Hidesman then Am-si (turned hostile and killed), Reti and Camitis both of who are also killed with the help of Kitthix.

On the way to the slums Nael is ambushed and badly beaten, casting invisibility to move away and summon a lesser air elemental. He uses the elemental to badly wound each attacker then kills them with his staff spear. With two attackers remaining he remembers the swords in his backpack (level 11 + Kensai!)

The two remaining attackers are quickly cut down and the ransom is collected at 8pm. As Nael waits for Travin he deals with a slaver guard and  is then attacked by some thugs; without any spells left (& being outside) he takes some damage but nothing too serious. Eventually Travin turns up and suggests Nael investigate a house that is nearby but perhaps a rest is advisable first.

Mage11 / Kensai 10. 260 kills in BG1, 497 total, Rayic Gethras

It's a bit more worthwhile for a mage dual - the long-lasting improved haste gives you an extra 1 APR (up to 9), which is a good alternative to whirlwinds.

Hama, kensai

I decided to send another kensai after Nael.  Hama made it through the dungeon, although I decided the elemental plane was too much of a risk.

He did get knocked out by a radiant mephit, but with the rest of the portal room already cleared that wasn't much of a risk.  A more risky moment  was after Hama successfully killed Ulvaryl; he then had to save against a chromatic orb from the battle mage.

He used a potion of speed to help against the spell-casting assassin, but a single hit was more than enough for him anyway.

Here is his record on exit from the dungeon.

Hama's brief run came to an end after clearing the circus and Copper Coronet. He had just obtained the green ioun stone and popped into the Southern Tombs. I couldn't remember whether the vampire there used domination or not, so should have got Lilarcor before proceeding. However, I didn't and just found out the hard way.

@Ecoris. It's great to hear from you! Best of luck with your trio. And please do free to post reports here: I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to read about your adventures.

Btw. Ecoris is among the forumites who helped me learn how to play (He taught me a lot about range weapons in particular). Give him a big welcome back!

@Gate. Best of luck with your K->M!

(As an aside, I'll note that while many consider the K->M to be the most powerful build in the game, I've personally never been sold on it. I'm sure they're immensely powerful across most encounters, but they seem far from ideal for the Ascension battles. Anyhoo: Looking forward to seeing what Nael can do!)

@Blind Visionary. Thanks for your comments.

@Grond0. Condolences. Were you planning to go K->T with Hama?

 Illasera Revisited

Alicia has darted ahead of her posts again: She's actually in Sendai's Enclave now. Before covering Gromnir and Yaga though, I'd like to add one more footnote on the Illasera encounter.

Shortly after my earlier post, it occured to me that I may had actually erred again in the experimental replay by drawing inappropriately on prior experience. I had only faced Ilasera with 2 single class arcane casters before: Alanis -who was only at Level 16 when she started ToB- and Transmuter Alastria. Both differed significantly from Alicia.

Alanis, at 16, lacked the firepower to simply dump her book and prevail, while Alastria, lacking Abjuration magics, required a complicated Teleport Field based approach to shield her from weaponry. In drawing up a battle plan for Alicia, I basically ended up with a hybrid of the approaches used by Alanis and Alastria. That was arguably a mistake: The multi-HLAed and Abjuration school blessed Alicia isn't either of those characters. For Alicia, Illasera needn't be anything other than a standard buff and explode mission. Here's Illasera done the super simple way.

Standard pre-buffs and a Sunfire Trigger (Note the dead Black Reaver Mage).
Posted Image

Two LRs and a single target barrage.
Posted Image

AoE finish.
Posted Image

Planetar to hunt the stragglers.
Posted Image

Simple huh? Experience is incredibly helpful of course, but there are times when replaying old strategies can lead to trouble. The lesson? Draw on the past, but rethink too.

Best,

A.

 Alicia v. Gromnir

While I dupped myself into unneeded complexity in the Illasera fight, Alicia wouldn't let me make the same mistake against Gromnir. With a middling hp max, few damage resistances, and -importantly- a way out if something goes wrong and you end up with a tapped book, Gromnir invites straightforward obliteration. Alicia happily accepted: She took down Gromnir and his buds in 4 simple steps.

Step 1

Standard pre-buffs and then Improved Alacrity followed by a pair of LRs.
Posted Image

Step 2

A single-target barrage and a sprinkling of Skull Traps.
Posted Image

Step 3

AoE spells for the back-wall casters.
Posted Image

Step 4

A Planetar to clear the fodder.
Posted Image

Fin!

I'll post on the Fire Giant Temple soon.

Best,

A.

Alicia at The Fire Giant Temple

In the opening battle at the Fire Giant temple, I decided to take the opportunity to get some additional practice with Alicia's Teleport Field-Wish based infinte spell strategy. I'll post on this in some detail since I neglected to explain the mechanics and rational in Alicia's Irenicus post- instead operating under the dubious assumption that people had read and still remember Alanis's now ancient Ascension.

So: What's with the bunnies and Telefields?

The Teleport Field-Wish strategy that Alicia used in the Irenicus fight was intially designed for an Ascension Insane solo. In that fight -facing The Five and Mel along with an army of demons-  keeping a loaded book while evading harm can be tricky. The Teleport Field-Wish approach is one strategy that works, though it does have its disadvantages as well as its merits. In most battles it is over-kill and unnecessarily complicated, but it's a good thing to have in the tool kit for the few battles when it may be needed. Here's an illustration of how it works.

Alicia entered the temple with minimal buffs. Her Chain was Limited Wish, ProMW, Teleport Field.
Posted Image

In substantive encounters, Alicia would have been pre-buffed, but for the purpose of this exercise, I had her go Improved Alacrity->Buff after her Chain had fired. She broke Invisibility by firing her Teleport Field x3 Sequencer.
Posted Image

And then answered the Djinni by wishing up a horde.
Posted Image

This all begs the question: Why bother? In this fight there is no point other than to practice. But if you are facing a long battle against a balanced group of foes who detect the invisible via script, PIs become essential and keeping them around long enough to dump their books can be tricky. One approach is to have the PI cast ProMW as soon as it summons. But that leaves it vulnerable to a True Sight or Dispel for an entire round. There are similar issues with going SI:D or SI:A first of course. Having the PI open with Improved Alacrity, on the other hand, gets ProMW, SI:A, SI:D all in place in 4 round segments. That's better, but 4 round segments can be an eternity in dense combat. The bunnies and Teleport Fields can greatly increase the odds of getting the spell off while also protecting the real caster in PI stasis.

Here we see Alicia's first PI casting Improved Alacrity. With all the targets -and with all the Teleport Fields- the odds of disruption are pretty low.
Posted Image

The PI is now free to buff and dump its damage spells.
Posted Image
Posted Image

And once the damage spells are released, the PI can thicken the field...
Posted Image

amp up the bunny density...
Posted Image

and wish up a freshbook for the real Alicia so the cycle can be begun a new.
Posted Image

From that point on it's rinse and repeat: sort of. There can be challenges in the transition from one set to another -and a given PI won't necessarily wish up the Rest option- but you get the basic idea. And if all goes well, you can end up with infinite hurt and low risk in challenging situations: That can help.

Best,

A.

Nice going, Alesia! And it is good that your Planetar is wandering under your Ice Storm and doesn't turn hostile to you. The enemies (intelligent ones at least) are not that devoted - the Undercity party and Sarevok's buddies comes to mind...=)

Yuppers: That was a goof up. Alicia got the Planetar out before it was injured though. She wasn't happy with me for letting it get in there in the first place of course...

On a related note, I've noticed something disturbing in SCS: PIs can turn hostile if they injure themselves while leaving the caster in PI stasis. I'd be curious to hear whether this is a bug or not.

 Alicia v. Yaga Shura

The Yaga Shura fight can be tricky, I've heard. But for some reason, I've never had issues with it. Alicia's battle at the Siege Camp was no exception here: She cruised to victory and blithely moved on to Amkethran.

Feeling stingy with spells, Alicia used Everard to send Yaga packing.
Posted Image

She then waited out his army invisible (EDIT: This habit combined with typically having good path weapon immunities likely explains why I've found the Yaga fight unproblematic).

Hoping for a quick knock out of the Lieutenant Mage and Cleric, Alicia timed an Improved Alacrity cast for Yaga's arrival and chose to cast from her own book.

The Lieutenant Cleric fell instantly.
Posted Image

And while the Lieutenant Mage's prebuffs got her through the opening salvo, a Death Fog bottled her up while the Ice Storms did their work on Yaga.
Posted Image

Before the book was drained, Alicia pulled back and conjured up a PI. L9 had been left untapped during the real Alicia's casting phase to facilitate later wishing.
Posted Image

The first PI didn't get the Wish Rest option. She did get a Double Length Improved Alacrity Time Stop and some other goodies though.
Posted Image

(Those Wish double-length time stops are good for dumping Wiltings.)
Posted Image

After the Time Stop, Yaga knocked Alicia out of PI stasis with a Lava Bomb. Excellent timing Yaga! Thanks!
Posted Image

After a second PI unloaded without getting Rest, a third succeeded in refreshing Alicia's book.
Posted Image

By that point, Yaga was Near Death and Alicia opted to do the honors herself.
Posted Image

Fin!
Posted Image

Alicia has since reached Sendai's inner sanctum and will face off with her soon.

A.

I seriously doubt that. In my first semi-full playthrough, I nearly threw the game away in frustration after failing to get through the courtyard of the De'Arnise Hold.

(EDIT: I had been trying to stab the Greater Yuan-Ti to death with an unbuffed Diviner believe it or not...)

He has also learnt a valuable lesson - target the enemy with vampiric touch and not yourself.

If you want to use VT as a pre-buff, you can cast it on an item if you like (Drawing life-force from a quarterstaff does feel a bit dirty though...)
