Grumble - the mastery orb is still in Engor’s hands. Forgetful dwarf.
Mook is murdered while Engor can only fight Lassal from a distance, relying on the boots of speed to keep a safe distance and Adjatha (save vs domination made anyway). 3 hits with Azuredge is enough to scare Lassal away. Gracen and one deserter fall to an Improved Haste attack and the second deserter dies a moment or two later.
Lassal flees as his four grimwarders are defeated and Haz departs (alive) but leaves his golem behind. Engor switches back to Azuredge (level 18, * mace). Gellal survives one hit, and a golem blow but not a second axe. A greater ghoul is destroyed, a fledgling vampire takes longer (3 domination attempts), a clay golem falls to the Flail of Ages then another fledgling vampire takes 2 hits, a greater ghoul 1 and Durst 2. Engor grabs the Mace of Disruption from a blood-bath and heads towards his good friend Cromwell (greedily wishing he had more than 4 weapon slots).
Grumble - Cromwell is less of a friend than Engor thought; he ignores the mace completely so Engor heads to the Government district to visit Sir Sarles. The artist is complaining about a lack of illithium and clearly this is a matter of life or death.
To the Promenade - where Maheer upgrades the horn of Valhalla twice and suggests Jerlia can source illithium. Invisible rests for 24 hours grants Engor with the fake alloy and visits to Unger Hilldark then Neb sees the real deal backpacked too. Tolgerias tries to distract Engor with another job but that can wait. Handing in Neb’s head and fobbing Sir Sarles off with the fake alloy are easier to do.
Cromwell finally acknowledges the Mace of Disruption, and improves it. Engor seems pleased with the result (melee against level drain will allow offhand domination protection at the same time).
Engor, Kensai 18. 883 kills, Kangaxx.

Tyran, gnome berserker (Grond0), & Titas Adukaars, dwarf fighter/cleric (Gate70)
Brynnlaw didn't delay things long - Ginia helped and Perth persuaded to part with his wardstone. The route to the Asylum was marked by a spreading pattern of undead chunks as Titas demonstrated his turn ability was coming on nicely.
After Irenicus cast super powerword sleep, the duo left Imoen to find her own way out and proceeded to check out the best route themselves. No particular problems so far - the lich managed to hang around the longest, without ever being threatening. Tyran did borrow the Ring of Gaxx for a while to repair damage done by some umber hulks, but has now got his own ring of regeneration (though picked up an extra flame arrow in the proceess of answering riddles). The last action of the session saw Titas confused by a yuan-ti mage; no danger there from the couple of remaining yuan-ti, but a warning not to rely on shield of the archons against area effects.
Combat stats (continued from BG1):
Tyran, berserker 21, 122 HPs, 763 kills.
Titas, F 14 / Cl 15, 106 HPs, 843 kills, 1 death.
For the last few sessions Titas and Tyran have been pretty much level pegging for kills, but Titas won this session decisively. Tyran had been relying on Azuredging undead to keep up; now that Titas has started exploding them himself his higher APR should allow him to continue increasing the gap.

Ashanti, Elven Beastmaster
(Character record pic taken just after her victory over Sarevok.)

Personal Item: Call of the Wild- Helm, +1 Saves, Immune to Fear (new for BGII)
Familiar: Winston- Standard fairy dragon familiar with wolf animation
Proficiencies: Quarterstaves, Shortbows, Crossbows, Darts, Two-Handed Weapon Style
While this is her entry post, Ashanti has already successfully navigated early SoA. She has reached Level 11 and is reasonably well equipped. Her character record and inventory following the De'Arnise Hold quest appear below.

NW: The helm seen above is not the Helm of Balduran: It is Ashanti's personal item Call of the Wild. Likewise, the yellow pooch is not the Moon Dog Figurine: It is Ashanti's familiar, Winston.
I'll have more to say about Ashanti soon.
Best,
A.

The Beastmaster kit has a beastly reputation. But in BG1 -and to a lesser extent early SoA- it is far from: Beastmasters are powerhouses in BG1, and they are eminently capable in early SoA. It is only later when exceptional metal weapons become available that they are eclipsed by other classes. So far, it's been a fun ride.
In the Chateau, Ashanti's Beastmaster kit abilities proved helpful when her summoned animals ran distraction and took the risk out of destroying the portals.

Then a trip to the Circus...

followed by Ashanti's most enjoyable early fight: purported Beastmaster versus True Beastmaster- with True Beastmaster winning handily.

Finishing up the Slaver Quest proved slightly costly when Ashanti felt compelled to finish the Priest of Cyric quick with a Potion of Firebreath. The simmery disc at Ashanti's feet is, of course, from The Reflex. Ashanti made a point of collecting The Reflex, the Ring of Air Control, the Sling of Seeking, Tuigan, the Staff Mace, and the Bracers of Defense AC 3 early.

Ashanti evaded ambushes with invisibility untill after Trademeet. The RoAC, Harmony, and Call of the Wild made them safe from that point on. Ashanti still travels invisible however.

After paying Gaelen, Ashanti was reasonably well equipped. She had a potion collection to cover most magical threats -including the save or else defense triumvirate Potion of Clarity, Potion of Freedom, Potion of Magic Shielding- and most of the durables she desired. Note that with unenchanted Studded Leather (for the adjustments), the Bracers of Defense AC 3, the RoP+2, the Claw, and the Harmony, her AC is respectable even without buffs.

Ashanti's adventures will continue this evening.
Best,
A.

Some shopping and tomb-raiding fills the time until Travin shows up. Borinall and his thugs are dead in moments then Littleman the stuffed bear is returned to the ghost of Wellyn and his parents informed.
Tanova falls to a hasted invisible Mace of Disruption while casting true sight. 3 more vampires are destroyed by it (level 19) then Lassal takes an immediate distaste to it. Engor buffs to stake Lassal into his coffin and Maces Bodhi despite her immunity to destruction. He takes a slight pause to try another improved haste but Bodhi has had enough and swirls away.

Shortly after paying Gaelen, Ashanti visited Bodhi's Lair. Bodhi's guild was destroyed, but I'm sure no one will be surprised to hear that Bodhi herself proved elusive.
Ashanti opened her fight with Pai'Na with an Arrow of Biting- hoping to shut down her casting. This worked -as it often does- but I've resolved to refrain from letting Ashanti pop casters before their buffs fire from now on (EDIT: Quote me on that if Ashanti reaches ToB...).

Arrow of Dispelling-> Sling of Seeking finished her before she could cast.

In the Lair, Ashanti summoned some critters for style points- this was mostly a straightforward melee mission though. Call of the Wild + Shield of Harmony + AC handled the defense. Staff Mace + Potion of Frost Giant Strength + Draw on Holy Might the offense.

The batty-wats did most of the damage.

Not taking any chances, Ashanti over-buffed against Bodhi. The potions used appear in the bottom row of her inventory.

And the result. Note that Bodhi is a crusher.

Let's do this...

The animals were put to sleep -and later nixed with Touch of Death- but Bodhi had little hope of besting Ashanti and her -22 AC v Crushing in melee.

Ashanti's next move?

We'll see how long that takes though: I'm not happy with Ashanti's potion collection right now. Beastmaster Ashanti is nearly as potion dependent as a thief but doesn't have the luxury of stealing what she needs. Shunning the complexity of civilization and metallurgy is fine and all: It's just expensive and complicated...
Best,
A.

Having finished Bodhi in a few rounds -and with 10 Turns of -10 v Crushing in effect- Ashanti found herself in search of a nearby crushing foe. That was bad news for Mencar of course.

A Dart of Stunning on Amon gave Ashanti the early advantage, but Brennan's fat-stack of Potions of Invisibility kept him and his comrades in the game.

Soon after, Ashanti thanked Amon kindly for returning her cloak. Somewhere Gurke is howling.

Additional Darts of Stunning immobilized Pooky, Brennan, and Orcslicer in turn.

By the end, Mencar must have figured out the Potion of Absorption thing because he chose to flee. A Magic Missle from Mr. Efreeti struck him down on the run.

The Den of Seven Vales proprietor was miffed by the loss of paying customers. Roger, on the other hand, was pleased to hear Ashanti has gold in her pockets again.
Best,
A.

The next three parts of the master-plan (Windspear, Unseeing Eye, Watchers Keep) look long-winded and optional so Engor decides to race after Imoen (she only has a 46 day head start).
Del and Parisa are destroyed again, but Valen floats off (switched to Del too early), Sanik is assassinated and Ginae / Claire are both rescued. Perth the Adept discovers improved haste is too much for his defences and Engor is careful to turn an infinite spellbook to a spell turning page (this seems bugged, tried to do stinking cloud twice so unequipped and re-equipped, suspect you should wait a round before re-equipping).
On to Spellhold, where various shadows and mists are maced while Arbane is offhanded as a precaution (level 20, hardiness).
“Hello Engor, I am
A lich and greater mummy cause some serious wounds but Engor is wise enough (wisdom 3 thanks to -1 from dream) to retreat and kill them at his own pace. As the maze clears Engor learns new skills (level 21, * scimitar, power attack). He decides not to play the statue riddle game (5 minutes for a ring that won’t be used). Instead a group of yuan-ti are killed and the hand of Dace used to escape to the next area.
Engor, Kensai 21. 1014 kills, Kangaxx.
(missing DUHM but hardiness and spell turning are both very useful).

(Have built up a nice supply of potions now so may start using them for tougher fights - not sure how many a typical SoA run needs so won’t go mad. Also would appreciate any knowledge on what things I can rely on saving throws for, e.g. I know maze & imprisonment have no save but need to check on the likes of dominate (ok?), level drain (not OK?) and stun (not OK?)
It's not so much the status effect (ex- Stun) but rather the delivery method (ex- Symbol: Stun versus Power Word Stun).
There's really quite a lot to cover here, so I'll just restrict myself to a few important points.
Maze and Imprisonment: As you noted, Maze and Imprisonment are game enders that do not allow saves. They are both touch spells, however (setting aside the Demi-Lich version of Imprisonment), and can be foiled in the targetting phase by maintaining distance or running II via RoAC. The arcane spell Maze (though not the traps) can also be foiled by Magic Resistance.
Power Words: The Power Words (notably Stun and Kill) do not allow saves. They're also unusually dangerous because they cast quick and offer no counter window. Keeping your HP total out of the danger-zone (90+ for PW:S, 60+ for PW:K) can keep you safe however. With Free Action Protects Against Stun installed, taking Free Action when your HP total dips below 90 can be a good move. Ditto for upgraded Hindo if you're below 60.
Symbol Spells: The symbol spells have a penalty of -4. Keep that in mind heading into mage and or priest battles.
Malison and Doom: Malison and Doom affect your saves of course. Don't let yourself be blindsided by Malison->Symbol: Stun for example. A Potion of invulnerability or a Potion of Stone Form can a be reasonable counter to Malison or Doom.
Innates: Some of the innates have pretty nasty save penalties (Dragon Fear is a -4 for example). Again, keep that in mind.
Keep up the good work!
A.
One final note: Maintaining a clear aura and keeping a comprehensive potion collection on hand is an excellent insurance policy. Staying as far away from mages as possible helps as well since it widens your counter window. Note that this helps for damage spells as well as disablers. This strategy should be a back-up plan rather than a first line defense, however, because it's easy to screw up.

(Slight bug when retrieving pictures, one vanishes meaning Engor can’t get to the Mithril Token machine. He already has boots of speed so no great loss).
Engor is offhanding the iMoD with hardiness, mirror image and improved haste active. Bodhi doesn’t like this and runs off again to tittle-tattle some news to Irenicus.

A series of tests are taken and passed (level 22, critical strike) before returning to Spellhold and Saemon Havarian. Lonk the sane takes two hits and Engor releases the remaining prisoners so they can watch Irenicus in battle. Irenicus teleports away just as his Engor clone is chunked, then a berserk warrior and Kitthix are summoned but the various murderers all target their main threat - and are chunked in return.

Saemon Havarian offers an escape and Engor takes it, only to return briefly to loot the coordinators room. Travelling with Saemon means dealing with Desharik, his pirates, some githyanki and finally sahuagin. After chunking an ettin Engor is given a task, to help the sahuagin king.
Engor is neither intelligent, wise or drunk enough to confound a spectator so melees it to the ground. The way to the prince sees various sahuagin killed (level 23, smite). A sea zombie lord is overwhelmed by buffs while the sahuagin prince and his court merely require a hardiness. On his way back to the king Engor moves around until a final group of sahuagin attack and grabs a new magical cloak, backpacking the cloak of displacement.

Engor, Kensai 23. 1150 kills, Kangaxx.

The Underdark is quickly missing an illithid, kuo-toa, a group of drow priestesses (level 24, whirlwind) as well as relinquishing a number of creatures held in a portal device. An elder orb and one beholder are dead but the rest of the lair looks tedious (risky and the sword component has been grabbed) so Engor returns outside, only to stumble into an illithid lair. This is even riskier (but required for the Equalizer). Engor sets to work, only for Simyaz to escape first (level 25, greater whirlwind). A potion of mind focusing plus a potion of defence are used and Engor flays the flayers (level 26, greater whirlwind) and Simyaz gets more of the same once Engor returns to the Underdark.

After a quick run through BG1, Fertig has been plodding methodically through the start of BG2. She's done lots of preparation with relatively little progress so far, but should be ready to start accelerating now.
In the dungeon Fertig used stealth shots extensively. That's likely to continue for a while until her saving throws improve. She also did the circus to get an easy introduction to her new world.
After talking to Gaelan she bought some thieving potions and spent a while improving her equipment. While most was bought or stolen a bag of holding was also teleported in to help manage the rest of the stuff. Fertig also wanted a potion case, but got that the legal way at Watcher's Keep (arriving there after making Suna Seni regret setting an ambush). At the Keep she ransacked the top floor as well as buying the potion case.
Back in the city she paid Gaelen and went to collect her goodies from Aran Linvail - I'm hopeful that this time she will eventually be able to use the amulet. While in the guild she also picked up the ring of lockpicks, giving her 95% ability prior to using DUHM.
Fertig has just got her 9th fighter level - her final one with constitution bonuses.

The party:
Xaeron, Fighter/Illusionist, lvl 11/12 (341 kills, Statue)
Faffner, Fighter/Thief (halfling), lvl 11/13, 1 death, 2 petrifications (241 kills, Statue)
Aelywia, Berserker>Druid, lvl 9/13, 2 deaths (186 kills, Shade Lord (was Statue prior to that))
A few of the deaths could just as well have befallen my protagonist, but the gods have spared him so far. And yes, my thief has been petrified twice.
Let's begin in medias res (in the lair of the Unseeing Eye):

We had carelessly attacked a group of 4 or 5 Gauths in the lower part of the area. We might just have edged out has they not called their older brother (a nearby Beholder) for help. We were promptly slowed and Faffner was turned to stone. (And apparently, "a few restoration scrolls, just in case" was not on the shopping list).
Aelywia had died in the attempt to flee, probably buying Xaeron enough time to make it. But he also took advantage of Arbane's Sword. While gulping healing potions, he is currently browsing through scroll cases and other containers to come up with some plan. At this point it was Pro:Evil -> Cacofiend. Thankfully, he took a deep breath, counted to 10 and decided that SI:Necromancy + other buffs were the way to go.
I don't have any screen shots of that, but he cruised through, then resurrected Aelywia and restored Faffner.
----------
In contrast, the battle against Tarnor and co. was the most one-sided one I have ever fought. Faffner had snuck in with the Cloak of Non-Detection and had drawn out Gaius' Oracle (which just made the Rakshasa in the center of the sewers visible: 2-0 to the PCs

The five reamaining goons in plate mail were slaughtered in just a few rounds never offering any notable resistance.
----------
They are currently making preparations before triggering the encounter with the Eye itself. A happy end (so far).
PS: A had a pleasant surprise looting a Skeleton Warrior:

I don't think I've ever found a level 9 scroll as random treasure before...

I found a little time to play Ashanti this evening. She completed the Mae'Var Guild Hall quest and has nearly finished the Planar Sphere. I'll post on Mae'Var now. The Planar Sphere may have to wait untill I return from my trip.
Ashanti took down the mephits running Resist Fire and Resist Fire Cold. She used the Fire Mephit scorchers to kill the Ice Mephits and then dropped the remainders immune to their breath weapons.

After nixing the Golems, it was time for Rayic Gethras. Ashanti waited for his buffs to fire, and then went to work.

She spent the early phase of the battle observing Gethras, looking for an opening. Her first window occured when Gethras cast Mantle- leaving him vulnerable to Firetooth's +4 enchanted arrows.

Firetooth's low APR did, however, give Gethras a chance to get a spell off between hits. He chose FoD.

Potential danger here....

but since Ashanti had kept her distance -and reserved her aura- she had plenty of time to quaff a Potion of Invulnerability before the spell effect hit.

With that danger averted, Ashanti was free to peel his skins and take him down- though some Acid Arrows did eat into her healing supply first.

Onto Mae'Var.
Ashanti opened with some animals on the field. She let one of the Mountain Bears trigger the encounter by giving Mae'Var a little love tap- with the understanding that this wouldn't hinder him much.

The buffs fired. And once again, Ashanti chose to observe in the early stage of the battle.

Once it was clear that Mae'Var was focused on the animals...

Ashanti decided to slide east and pump his cleric full of spell casting failure with her Darts of Wounding.

A Mountain Bear finished him.

And with Mae'Var still focused on the critters, Ashanti leisurely took down the remainder of his support crew.

Once the last of the animals fell, Mae'Var vanished. Ashanti countered with a Potion of Invisibility of her own, and then drew out Mae'Var with Mr. Efreeti.
Opting to play it safe, Ashanti invested a precious Arrow of Dispelling in the finish...

as well as some less precious Darts of Wounding for casting failure.

I may find time to post on the Planar Sphere tomorrow. In all likelihood though, this will be Ashanti's last post for a few days. Best of luck while I'm away everyone!
Best,
A.
