Grond, this Tiamat looks formidable. And terrifying. Getting cowled wizards to unleash pit fiends in the bazaar? Nightmare on Athkatla street. I don't think the locals will forget that for a while.

Good luck!

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 16(11) - (update 1 - 1 hr 40 mins)
Nasha, half-elf shapeshifter (Grond0), & Charel, elf sorceror (Gate70)

Having belatedly made it through BG1 unscathed the girls have started their adventures in Amn.

So far they have just escaped from the dungeon.  No problems there, although Ulvaryl managed to avoid Charel's MMM long enough to make her bat escape.

Charel, sorceror L9, 40 HPs, 136 kills

Sharrde : Neutral Good human female bounty hunter
196 kills in BG1.
95 kills in the chateau (291).
7 kills in the circus (298).

A snarefest leaves one mage injured but active, while a second has been held so is cut down.Image IPB

Once mirror images expire Sharrde finishes the other off. Lehtinan and Bernard allow another rest (really?) so Sharrde backstabs a winter wolf, backstabs a panther and two mutated gibberlings. Two snares are laid in their cells and a slight movement allows Sharrde to spot two bears (snared while in their own pens).

One bear manages to survive but the beastmaster is held twice while Tabitha survives each and has to be fought - painful but not too dangerous. Backstabs finish the beastmaster, the bear, a minotaur and a leopard so Hendak and the slaves can be freed.

Sharrde is busy storing scrolls everywhere (think I will dual class at 15 if she makes it that far. Edit, although level 13 might be better, just doing some research...)

Bounty hunter 12. 321 kills Ulvaryl.

Sharrde : Neutral Good human female bounty hunter
Sharrde decides to use the sewers to reach the slaver compound. Snares deal with some hobgoblins while backstabs help against an otyugh (replicated when Sharrde has to flee back into the Coronet). An encounter with myconids sees Sharrde use an exit twice to avoid confusion but save a third (roll 18, save was 10). Not wise.

(Approaching level 13, now believe this is best time to dual)

Hendak asks if Haegan and his slavers put up much of a fight. No, of course not.

What about the trolls, and the tuan-ti. Don’t be silly.

Or the pesky mages. Not a chance, at least until Sharrde misses an easy backstab and is held. Luckily for her the mage casts skulltrap and kills himself, plus Sharrde saved against some of the damage and the hold person wears off in the nick of time (I don't know how she survived to be honest, not a no reload highlight).

Hendak rewards handsomely and the experience is uplifting for Sharrde.Image IPB

Sharrde : Neutral Good human female bounty hunter mage
After another rest Sharrde casts Shield. A dimension door starts to open nearby so she rushes away from the Slums and into the Docks - must remember to cast inside.

The journey to the docks is uneventful (good job too, level 1 mage with no spells or weapons would be fun). The mad cleric (look away)...

He is charmed using the ring of friendship and made to stop casting a spell.
Then he silences himself before the fairy dragon familiar helps Sharrde (she’s using fists).
He’s badly wounded when he gets his voice back, hold person is no good against the familiar.
2nd hold person likewise.
3rd hold person hits Sharrde as the badly wounded familiar moves slightly too close.
The cleric panics so the familiar chases him around the docks.
He recovers just as the familiar kills him.

(Sharrde resolves to stop larking about)

On to Renal Bloodscalp and Mae’Var.

A little more cash and Sharrde might be able to cut a deal with Gaelan Bayle, so she checks her map. The house of Valygar looks promising, only Hervo threatens to call the guard. He clears off so Sharrde breathes a sigh of relief and opens a container. Goody, a potion and a trinket. She moves to another container as a group of guards/wizards arrive and sentence her to death.

The exit is blocked so she runs upstairs but they are there too. Downstairs, only to be stunned as she steps foot outside again. They catch up within a moment or two and carry out the sentence.

(kind of boxed myself in with a poorly equipped character and wary of the Suna Seni ambush as not sure if it would trigger at level 1. Still, my fault for not thinking the dual-class transition out).

Consolations, Gate70 - I think the normal process for solo duals is to have a lot of quests that you have reported your success for after the dual, this way you get experience without fighting.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 16(11) - (update 2 - 2 hrs 10 mins, total 3 hrs 50 mins)
Nasha, half-elf shapeshifter (Grond0), & Charel, elf sorceror (Gate70)

Some more action today saw few problems from the enemies, though Nasha did attempt to kill herself on the odd trap.

First up was a quick trip to the circus.  The Copper Coronet was then handed over to a new owner before a trip through the sewers to Slaver HQ.  Nasha's fire elemental got a first outing here and proved a handful for all comers.  She also summoned a couple of nymphs and then proceeded to kill them by tripping over the prismatic spray trap near the wizards - fortunately making her own saving throw.  A replacement pair of nymphs did help pacify the wizards, although Charel's MMMs looked like being enough anyway.

A Suna Seni ambush gave Nasha an opportunity to practise her insect plague, though by the time it triggered the main target (the mage) had already been MM'd to death.  The duo then carried on their way to Watcher's Keep to pick up a potion case, ammo case and golem manual; Nasha benefited from a newly learnt spirit armour spell from Charel to help get her spell save safely into negative territory here.

With a bit of extra loot from the Keep there was enough money to satisfy Gaelan Bayle and go and get some improved equipment for Nasha.  While in the Docks area, killed a mad cleric, cleared a pirate hideout and started Mae'Var's tasks.  Hareishan also spawned here - her presence causing Charel to flee so quickly he left the game entirely (unfortunately Nasha shifting between human and werewolf shape or force-attacking sometimes seems to cause this type of problem).  Gate70 did manage to project his voice through the ether to guide the behaviour of Charel until he was able to rejoin (in particular getting her indoors in order to generate MMM).

Rayic Gethras was probably the hardest fight.  Without really strong spell defenses the primary weapon against her was summons, but Rayic was dealing with them while protected by his shadow door (this pointed up the need for Charel to learn an improved method of detecting invisible opponents - Rayic's globe defeating glitterdust).  Eventually Nasha managed to get an insect plague to bite on Rayic (via an invisible stalker) and moved into melee to finish him off.

After completing a few more tasks it was time to cleanse the guild.  With both characters having skins that was easy enough.

Renfeld, who had been clogging up Nasha's inventory for quite a while, was belatedly returned to the Harper HQ.  The final action of the session was near there - revenging Mook on Lassal.

Nasha, shapeshifter L12, 81 HPs (5 from Helm), 305 kills
Charel, sorceror L11, 46 HPs, 196 kills
- shield, sleep, MM, PfE, LMD; invisibility, resist fear, MI, knock, glitterdust; MMM, MSD, flame arrow, spell thrust; stoneskin, minor sequencer, spirit armour; breach, spell immunity

Tiamat - wild mage v6 (update 2)

Tiamat VI has started strongly, with few problems encountered in this session.

The first order of business was to clear the Copper Coronet in order to get access to the Sling of Seeking.  Tiamat had to be careful here to only buff where innocents were unlikely to get killed by a surge.

In the sewers he buffed to get negative spell saves and killed some myconids with MMM and a couple of blasts from the wand of lightning.  Cloudkill was used a number of times in the sewers and slaver HQ for crowd control and for finishing off unsuspecting enemies (usually in combination with web and malison).  The acid trap was negotiated by using vampiric touch on a summons to get HPs up (though mirror image prevented any damage anyway).  Releasing a troll captive got reputation up to 20.

Tiamat took the teddy bear back to the graveyard and decided to clear that up totally.  He risked a magic missile to finish off Uncle Lester when he looked like he might take revenge on his nephew.  The wand of lightning helped thin the spiders out, leaving Pai'Na exposed to MMM (couldn't find a space out of sight in the nest to use cloudkill).  In the southern tombs I made sure this time to kill all the rest of the undead (popping in and out of the tombs as necessary), before buffing up for the vampyre.  That effort was actually not necessary as Kitthix immediately webbed him before he even tried a domination.

For the time being anyway I'm operating without a bag of holding and was ambushed while returning to sell graveyard loot at the Promenade - the RoAC coming in handy there as Tiamat was carelessly not travelling invisible.  Also saw Hareishan leave a few goodies from some thieves on the ground before Tiamat returned to finish off the Southern tombs.

On the way to Watcher's Keep to try and address inventory problems Tiamat rescued Renfeld and ended up taking on Xzar's quest.  Prebek and Sanasha collapsed simultaneously with breathing problems allowing entrance to Harper HQ.  While looting that Tiamat exited to find Sansuki under attack - tough luck for him I'm afraid.  As he was in the area anyway Tiamat also opened up Mae'Var's quests and talked to Kangaxx.

A couple more ambushes were safely negotiated allowing Tiamat to finally arrive at Watcher's Keep.

Tiamat - wild mage v6 (update 3)

Tiamat VI had another untroubled session and the main danger of surges is now behind him - it's much more likely he will die to a mistake in future rather than a random surge.

At Watcher's Keep a couple of vampiric wraiths were waiting for Tiamat.  They are hard for an ordinary caster to kill, let alone a wild mage with no protection from drain.  Tiamat did manage to clear the left hand side rooms, but the vampiric wraiths always knew where he was so he couldn't sneak round them to get the ammo container and had to settle for the moment for the potion case and golem manual as the main prizes.

Back at the Promenade he purchased wands of fire, cloudkill, lightning and monster summoning which make killing enemies in close combat a lot easier.  He still had just enough funds left to get the Robe of Vecna as well.

On to the Bridge District.  The berserker horn was acquired using spell immunity (fortunately I was paying attention and noticed the first attempt to put this on had failed).  Then tracked down a kidnap victim and got the ransom for her.  Reputation was partly repaired by solving the skinner murders - the first uses of wand of fire here took down the rune assassins before they could dig through stoneskins, but the bone golem was resistant to that.  A few standard summons were topped off with a first use of the wand of monster summoning to finish off it (getting to level 13 in the process).

In the temple area started the Unseeing Eye quest to get access to the lich there.  Then did the Fallen Paladins (nearly all damage done with the fire wand).  While selling the paladins' equipment Tanova pounced, but she was sent away with an assurance that Tiamat had nothing to do with the thieves guild.  Back in the temple area Tiamat reported to the paladins (getting reputation back to 20) and looted the temple of Talos - getting 20,000 XP for picking up a necklace.

Bought some scrolls from Cutpurse in the Bridge District, including improved haste.  After resting in preparation, read a protection from undead scroll and went lich hunting.  A potion of speed and phantom blade quickly accounted for the city gates lich and the elemental lich.  A second phantom blade splattered theshade lich.  The potion of speed ran out as Tiamat arrived at Kangaxx and wasn't renewed; as a result it took 2 more phantom blades to kill his original lich form.

After a further rest came back to try and kill the demi-lich form.  I knew that MMM could potentially wear Kangaxx down, but couldn't remember how easy that was.  In the event the 15 MMM available (6 spells, 1 contingency, one cast the previous day and  7 scrolls) were plenty when added to the other resources consumed (another scroll of protection from undead, 2 potions of mind focusing, potion of power, improved haste).  That took his THAC0 down to 1 so that he only missed with a roll of a 1 or a 2.
First MMM - barely injured.
Second MMM - injured.
Third MMM - badly injured.
Fourth MMM - badly injured.
Fifth MMM - near death and panicking.
Sixth MMM - near death and panicking.
Seventh MMM - did the trick.
With better planning it would have been possible to do Kangaxx as well with a single scroll of undead protection and DUHM could have been substituted for one of the potions of mind focusing.

I will substitute the Ring of Gaxx for the Claw of Kazgoroth next time and go and get the ring +2 from Aran Linvail as well.

Tiamat - wild mage v6 (update 4)

Tiamat started off by bringing the Talos necklace to Mae'Var before going in search of Rayic Gethras.  The mephits there provided him with a protection from magic energy scroll, which might be handy if he's ever forced to skull trap himself.  Some ogres occupied Rayic until his PFMW wore off and MMMs could disupt his spell (though an ogre finished him off).

Reporting Rayic's death got Tiamat to level 14 and a couple of level 7 spells.  After completing Mae'Var's tasks Tiamat invaded the guild. The wand of fire was used a number of times upstairs, while there was a first outing for a Mordy sword downstairs.  After getting rewarded by Renal went back buffed up to loot the rest of the guild, though that proved to be a poor bargain - now need to get more money to pay Gaelan.

Did the Sir Sarles quest, though forgot to drop the real illithium so Sir Sarles took that (not that the IMoD is any good to Tiamat anyway).  Then recovered a relic for the temple of Lathander.

Eventually decided Nalia had waited long enough and journeyed to de'Arnise Hold.  No problems there.  A first use of the wand of lightning did most of the damage on the yuan-ti mage - that taught Tiamat enough to get to level 15.  Only 1 umber hulk survived a cloudkill ambush, while Torgal fell to web / cloudkill.

It was too much hassle to bother looting much in the Keep fully, but Tiamat did carry back a few high-value items to store in case of future surges destroying gold.

Finally signed up with the thieves guild and picked up the improved equipment.  Immediately went to see Mook and revenged her on Lassal.  Then discovered the location of the vampire HQ from the guild contact.

Made a serious error there, letting a fledgling vampire see Tiamat when he only had a saving throw of 0 (he's never had any potions that could boost that), but he saved against the domination.  He had another surge hold while buffing for Tanova, so rested and started again.  Another surge with 4 effects this time, but the spell cast anyway, so no problem.  Tried to web / skull trap her, but she ran away after one lot of damage.  Killing a few other things got Tiamat level 16 and he rested before looking for Tanova again.  She was nowhere to be found, but the rest of the crew were soon slaughtered before Tiamat rested again in preparation for Bodhi.  She worried too much about the sword in front of her and not the phantom sword Tiamat was hitting her with from the rear.  Tiamat let Aran know what was happening, but declined to take ship to rescue Imoen just yet.

Tiamat, wild mage L16, 79 HPs (7 from ioun stone), 609 kills

Tiamat - wild mage v6 (update 5)

Tiamat's latest escapades started by clearing out a pirate nest.  Before setting off for the Umar Hills I decided that a bit of belated discretion was in order and bought a few potions for emergencies from Roger.  While there did a few other chores:
- Roger's troll and a rakshasa got mordy swords.
- Tarnor and his gang were all killed with a web, confusion & cloudkills combination.
- Mekrath was more trouble than I expected.  He initially went hostile before Tiamat had buffed up and then shrugged off a first use of a power word: silence (unusually Tiamat risking a surge in combat there) with vocalize.  In the end MMM beat down his defenses and the golem finished him off.  Out of most spells Tiamat attempted to gate in a demon to play with the yuan-ti mages. That failed, but he got his spells back instead and a few webs, a cloudkill and a couple of skull traps later the way was clear.

In Umar Hills found out the source of the killings and arranged a truce with Madulf (level 17).  MMMs and sling cleared out most of the initial undead at the temple ruins entrance, though there were a couple of rare uses of the lightning wand to send shadow fiends on their way. Inside Tiamat had no trouble with the first set of enemies, but used a couple of MMM scrolls on the first lich rather than going away to rebuff.

For the second lich tried sending in a fiend, but that didn't seem to be doing anything and Tiamat had to use another MMM scroll to finish the lich off.  He was also surprised here a bit earlier when the lich apparently saw him through the wall and sent a finger of death at him.  However, his saving throws were safe against that.

The Shade Lord was a bit more trouble than usual.  He survived the initial barrage of MMM to get his buffs up and Tiamat resorted to an oracle scroll and sling to finish him off.  Beating up the Shadow Altar got him to level 18 and the ability to summon a dark planetar.

Thaxy wasted his death spell on an ogrillon before Tiamat buffed up.  As he intended to use combat spells here he cast improved chaos shield for the first time and then opened hostilities with a lower resistance.  A further one of those was used while Tiamat was occupied with mordy swords, together with a few magic missiles and a couple of skull traps.  That got Thaxy to near death before he started chasing Tiamat and a wand scorcher (first of those for a while) finished him off.  Tiamat's mage heritage was apparent in that fight - most enemies he's pretty happy to go toe to toe with, but I'm not sure he hit Thaxy even once there with several dozen MMMs.  Things might have been even easier with a planetar, but I had forgotten they needed to be memorised as 9th level spells (as opposed to being used as abilities with SCS2) when resting in preparation for the fight.

Spoke to the mayor and Madulf before saving some adventurous boys from a dragon (rather weaker than Thaxy!) and collecting Valygar's body.  While buffing for the latter encounter there was a reminder that wild surges can still be a problem, even if that is no longer likely.  For a moment I thought this one had both held him and summoned a demon, which would not have been good!
Image IPB

Back in Athkatla Tiamat has opened the Planar Sphere and is considering what to do next.  I'm minded to go and get a bag of holding Imoen.

Tiamat, wild mage L18, 81 HPs (7 from ioun stone), 702 kills

Tiamat - wild mage v6 (update 6)

Thanks Corey.  Tiamat has continued to make good progress, but has just hit a potentially game-ending problem which I would appreciate guidance on.

Arriving at the Docks to report in to Aran Tiamat tried to get some MMM ready for the journey.  That could have been nasty as, unsuspected by him, a couple of thugs with the follow script had locked on to him.  If he had been held by this surge, that might have been fatal (theoretically his invisibility contingency should have saved him, but I'm not convinced it always fires reliably).

At Brynnlaw he buffed up to see off some ambushing vampires and then helped Ginia before persuading Perth to hand over his access wardstone.  His book provided fireball, PFE, farsight, lightning bolt, farsight (again), stinking cloud, lightning bolt (again) before sticking on burning hands - the book got thrown away!

On to the Asylum and Tiamat dreamed he made a first use of a Dark Planetar against Bhaal before telling Imoen to get lost.  The Dark Planetar disappeared just before finishing off a lich and his companions, so Tiamat had to complete the job.  I got a bit blase with the summoned enemies, forgetting that a beholder would target Tiamat; he was hit with an anti-magic ray to make his spell saving throw 2, but fortunately was not targeted with an instant-death attack before the Planetar finished the beholder off.  Got to level 19 here - taking energy blades.  Shortly after that a cow plummeted down on him, but appeared to make no impression on his stoneskin.

No further problems getting out.  Tiamat met Bodhi with a planetar in tow, but managed to keep it away while the Slayer made an appearance.  Picked up some boots of speed and boots of the north from the machine.  The experience for escaping got Tiamat to level 20 (improved alacrity).  Before leaving I also thought I would test whether level 10 spells can be cast through Nahal's reckless dweomer - looks like they can, though it was a costly experiment.

For the final Spellhold battle Tiamat immediately silenced Jon and hit him with MMMs.  Jon didn't cast vocalise, but that didn't stop him from quickly replying with a wilting that took a toll of Tiamat's allies.  I don't think I've ever used a planetar before this run, but a check of its spells showed insect plague, which caused at least one of Jon's spells to fail.  Meanwhile Tiamat was unleashing energy blades which soon had Jon at near death.  An efreeti summoned by an ally decided to use a fireball on Jon, which annoyed the planetar and he attacked Tiamat, but Jon fortunately collapsed at that moment.  Tiamat then ran round keeping out of the way of the planetar, while using wands to damage the murderers until the planetar disappeared and he was able to finish off the last few at his leisure.
Image IPB

Tiamat accepted Saemon's offer of a ship and soon found himself in the city of Caverns.  Moving rather incautiously he triggered his contingency for the first time in a long while (on an acid trap).  Just in case of accidents while doing the imps' game Tiamat ran spell immunity against maze there.  Took a cloak from a princess on the way to see the rebel prince.  Then killed the prince and reported back to the king.  That got Tiamat to level 21 and, so long as he keeps his protection rings on, he no longer has any chance of being petrified by a surge.  He took an extra L6 spell as his HLA.

The problem is that the king gave Tiamat gauntlets of crushing and rod of lordly might, but no rope (although he conducted him to the exit and his dialogue suggested that Tiamat should be able to depart).  The only thing I can think that might have affected this is that Tiamat initially told the Prince he would side with him, but then killed him anyway.  I can't really see why this should have changed things though and, as the king intended Tiamat to depart, I'm minded to treat this as a bug and console the rope in.  Any views on whether this is reasonable?

Tiamat, wild mage L21, 84 HPs (7 from ioun stone), 845 kills

Edit:  king's dialogue was as follows:-

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 16(11) - (update 2 - 2 hrs 10 mins, total 3 hrs 50 mins)
Nasha, half-elf shapeshifter (Grond0), & Charel, elf sorceror (Gate70)

The session started with a viewing of Prebek's house.  Unfortunately that seemed to be suffering from a plague of insects and the duo only stayed a minute or so.  A bit longer was spent searching Harper HQ before reporting back to Xzar, who was (briefly) pleased with their efforts.

On to the Bridge District where Nasha was (a)mazed to find a valuable horn sitting unguarded in a chest.  Then taught a lesson to a Guild Contact in an inn - Nasha learning enough in return to get to level 13 and an upgrade to a greater werewolf shape.  This makes her much stronger in defense (standard AC lowered from -8 to -13, 45% MR, 50% elemental resistance and regeneration 6 HP / round).  Also an upgrade offensively, though not so extreme (strength boosted from 19 to 21, 3 attacks instead of two, damage slightly higher and attacks as +3 weapon rather than +1).

Nasha's upgrade was given an immediate test in dealing with the skinner's creatures.  The ghasts managed to hold Charel, but before they could begin feasting on her Nasha chunked one and burnt the other to a crisp with a first use of a wand of heavens.  The Rune Assassins quickly followed the ghasts into oblivion.

Moving on to the Graveyard Uncle Lester was given a fresh burial, in the course of which a man buried alive was rescued.  Going downstairs a few groups spiders were removed before Pai'Na was rapidly chunked.  Nasha benefiting here from Charel's newly learned improved haste spell (only increases attacks from 3 to 4 as one of her standard attacks is due to the permanent haste effect on her).  Nasha is not actually immune to poison, but wasn't too scared about being hit by the remaining horde of spiders.  That might have something to do with the fact that most of them were sleeping of course.

At vamp HQ Nasha should have had chaotic commands up constantly, but forgot to renew it after resting when tackling the group guarding the MoD - fortunately none of them targeted her with domination.  Apart from mistakes the only problem seemed likely to be Tanova.  A series of 4 nymphs, Kitthix, berserk warrior and a fire elemental drained her of offensive spells though and she soon became another victim of Nasha's claws.  As expected, Bodhi didn't stick around long, allowing the duo to report their success to Aran Linvail.  They declined his offer of immediately shipping out and are currently considering what to do next.

Nasha, shapeshifter L13, 83 HPs (5 from Helm), 362 kills
Charel, sorceror L12, 51 HPs (4 from ioun stone), 226 kills
- shield, sleep, MM, PfE, LMD; invisibility, resist fear, MI, knock, glitterdust; MMM, MSD, flame arrow, spell thrust; stoneskin, minor sequencer, spirit armour; breach, spell immunity; improved haste

There is, but there's no way for Tiamat to get it - the king has the key, but he disappears as soon as he's given you your reward for killing the prince (I've just opened the game to double-check that the treasury door can't be knocked).
