The Spear of the Unicorn is a +2 weapon but it requires +3 to hit a Planetar. What am I missing?

The Spear of the Unicorn couldn't have been the damage dealing weapon, but it would have let her reliably make her save against the vorpal effect. That would have been useful in the round(s) where she needed her Aura to counter the Lich's spells (notably the Malison and, to a lesser extent, the Comet). Once her Aura was clear, she could have immediately equipped The Defender, activated, GW, and taken out the Planetar within a round. As it was, with no way of reliably making the save, I found myself desperately trying to micro-manage her movement which crowded out effective action against either the Lich or the Planetar.

Anyhoo none of this should have been necessary really. Had she left her unenchanted leather on and moved away from the sarcophagus, she wouldn't have found herself in that situation to begin with.

Once again, best of luck with your runs everyone!

A.

Grond - kensai (update 3)

The next destination was Trademeet.  The main reason for going there was to complete Grond's primary selection of weapons with Belm, but there were other things on offer as well.  The first was the efreeti bottle - a kai assault doing the trick there.  The djinn in the tent got treated to a Gaxx haste each.

In the Druid Grove a combination of 3 giant trolls and a spirit troll did a reasonable amount of damage to Grond, but also provided him with level 13 and a welcome improvement in his APR and saving throws.

The efreeti got a first outing against Kyland Lind, though it was Kitthix's web that made sure he would not be able to escape.  Grond picked up Belm and tested his new capability of 9 APR by chunking both spore colonies before they could produce any myconids.  Dalok was hacked down, but the rakshasas left alone for now.  Cernd punished Faldorn, while Grond looked on admiringly.  Back in Trademeet Grond reported in and then bought the Dwarven Thrower, Ras, Cloak of Displacement, Belt of Inertial Barrier and Necklace of Missiles.

Just for the hell of it he used a daystar sunray in clearing the tomb.

Back in Athkatla Grond bought a few potions and scrolls and the rod of resurrection.  He has now got most the things on his originally list.  One still outstanding is Ilbratha, so next he took a quick trip to Umar Hills.  Did the quests around the town, including getting Ilbratha and picking up Valygar's dead body, but didn't bother travelling to the ruined temple.  There was a pathfinding problem getting round one of the rangers that spawn to protect Valygar and, as a result a few seconds were wasted.  That was enough for Grond, who only had DUHM on, to take severe damage (down to 23 HPs) and be forced to retreat.  Gaxx healed him as he ran, meaning there was no problem in picking off the enemies with Azuredge.  Just a reminder there of the need to be careful with a kensai - Grond learnt a lesson though, achieving level 15 there.  Incidentally his unbuffed THAC0 is now -6 with his main hand, so he doesn't miss most things very often.

Back in the city again Grond opened the Planar Sphere and then went to pay Gaelen Bayle. That gave him immediate access to one of the few desired items now missing (a +2 ring of protection - which soon replaced the Claw of Kazgoroth) and led toward another.  The route started with Mook; Grond got drained by Lassal there pointing up the need to get some protection against that.  Then on to the Guild Contact in the Bridge District and finally to vampire HQ.  To avoid any more embarassment in that area Grond used another protection from undead scroll.  I wasn't sure what would happen if I killed Lassal before he could talk, so left him alone, but killed the rest.  The Grimwarders ignored the undead protection, but were no threat on their own - Grond got to level 15 here.  After resting, Lassal was Azuredged using Arbane haste and Grond went to confront Bodhi.  Kitthix and the efreeti occupied her attention for the short time needed for Grond to go to work with the FoA.

On the way out of the Graveyard Grond found a paladin a new daughter and agreed to track down some kidnappers.  After reporting in to Aran that's what he did and he kindly told the noblewoman that she was free to go ... just as soon as a ransom had been paid.  Fortunately for her that was done almost immediately.

There was a bit of unfinished business with the mace of disruption.  However, Sir Sarles was soon packing to leave the city in disgust, while Grond was left with some illithium courtesy of Neb (who got one backstab in, but didn't manage to hide again).  The mace got an early workout when I decided to help the temple of Lothander recover a sacred item and ran into Tanova (level 16).

The last item on Grond's list of desired equipment was the berserker horn.  The only way to get that was to use a scroll or potions of magic protection, which seemed like rather a waste, so he decided to stretch the scroll a bit further.  First he picked up the horn using scroll and potion of speed.  Then he went to confront the Twisted Rune, adding storm giant strength, heroism and defense to the buffs.  Shangalar took his time in arriving so the efreeti had already disappeared.  Grond followed him, courtesy of II, before the beholder could target him and went back to confont Shangalar.  Revanek followed and soon died.  A sunray hurt Shangalar, but didn't finish him off, so Grond had to wait until his buffs died down and Azuredge could take effect.
Image IPB

He then summoned Ras for the first time - it didn't last long, but caused enough of a distraction for Grond to finish off the beholder without being debuffed.  Shyressa saved several times against Azuredge strikes before expiring from one of Layene's spells, while the pit fiend and Layene were successfully Azuredged.
Image IPB

Deciding to maximise benefit from the protection from magic scroll Grond headed immediately for the Guarded Compound.  He ran past the spawning enemies on the ground floor to tackle the main group immediately.  Ketta missed his first backstab, but got the second - though paying with his life.  Meanwhile Grond had been debuffed by Sion, so took another potion of defense while running away.  Koshi followed him - to his death.  Olaf also walked in - straight into Grond's last Gaxx haste.  That lasted long enough to also get through Sion's stoneskins and he only lasted a second or two more.  Maferan took another round or so, leaving Stalman to be Azuredged past his blade barrier.
Image IPB

You might notice in that sequence that his HPs are staying stubbornly low.  That's because I'm aiming to do this run without using any healing potions (or rod of resurrection) if possible.  That does of course introduce a certain element of risk.  Here, with the job pretty much done, I carelessly walked the wrong side of the pillar when heading back downstairs and into an acid trap (going down from about 70 HPs to just over 30).  However, the enemies downstairs didn't have any range attacks that could hurt him so he continued down immediately and used a potion of speed and Azuredge to finish them off.

Finally Grond took ship for Spellhold.  At Brynnlaw the opening ambush by vampires was a trivial annoyance.  Grond helped Ginia and then a single critical blow persuaded Perth to give up his wardstone.  The book of infinite spells went straight from fireball to true seeing and Grond happily left it there.

He beat up various undead on the way into Spellhold, getting to level 17 in the process.  He's just lost his Bhaal powers and given up a bit of wisdom in order to be able to meet Imoen again.  Grudging those losses he immediately told her to get lost!

Those are his standard, unbuffed saves, though occasionally I might forget to re-equip a ring and drop below them.  For tougher combats he would also use improved invisibility, though that's actually pretty rare now.  For ordinary purposes I regard those as safe.

Having started with axe proficiency in BG1 he's been slowly building up knowledge of how to swing his Flail of Ages properly and will have fully sussed that next level.

Looking impressive Grond0, a bit of care and you could go a long way with that approach.

Indiana Jones Kronk & the Tears of Bhaal
Dragon /  Pride. Good: Immune to +1 weapons or less.
Beholders / Fear. Good: +20% resistance to fire, cold and electricity.
Nalia /Selfish. Good: -2hp, -1 dex, -xp. 10% magic resistance.
Genie / Greed. Good: +2 to saving throws.
Wrath / Sarevok. Evil: Chaotic Evil. +2 to strength (23, need to check as thought should be 22?).

After placing the fifth tear Kronk is strong enough to open the huge doors. Out bursts Irenicus to summon a group of demons. Kronk and Mazzy soon remove them and two true sights, two warding whips, two ruby rays and two pierce shields are used as Irenicus transforms into another slayer and starts to take damage.
A breach is used and Irenicus is returned to his normal form. He doesn’t last much longer.

No DUHM for Kronk though (not that he really needs it)

Kronk, Berserker 21. 1194 kills (433 BG1, 761 SoA), Bodhi. Image IPB

Mazzy, fighter 19. 253 kills, Niz.
Nalia, thief 4 > mage 18. 186 kills, adamantite golem.
Imoen, thief 7 > mage 18. 85 kills, Ulitharid.
Viconia, cleric 21. 89 kills, Shangalar.
Jaheira, fighter 14 / druid 14. 195 kills, Unseeing Eye.

Nalia is fortunate that Kronk wanted elemental resistance as her time with the party is drawing to a close.

@Gate70: Are you just dropping Nalia, or swapping her out for Sarevok? Certainly Imoen can take over the mage duties...

And grats on taking down Irenicus! Sounds like you had a good plan for him.

It is sad to hear that Azriel's run has ended... If only she had put on some nice dress instead of Shadow Armor back then maybe it would have distracted the lich from casting those nasty spells...

Grats on beating down Irenicus, Gate!

ToB Kronk
Travelling with Mazzy, Nalia, Imoen, Viconia and Jaheira.

Illasera needs to improve herself, but she won’t find a chance today.
Her three reavers are killed first and then she is overwhelmed.
Image IPB

The party is teleported to a pocket plane where a solar explains very little to Kronk. Sarevok explains a bit more and suggests he can be restored and is willing to travel with Kronk. Nalia reluctantly returns her gear and starts tidying the pocket plane up.

Sarevok immediately decides to become a mage (dual at level 18!) and retrieves the ring of Koveras. After completing the first pocket plane task Sarevok memorises spells from levels 1-3.

Looking good Gate and Grond0!

Btw. I'm re-configuring my installs now. I'm upgrading to SCS v.21, adding Hard Times to BG1 and DEFJam to BGII. I'll likely have to do some testing before starting a new run.

If nothing else this setup should be stable enough. Looking forward for your next run :)

Yes. It should be stable. The thing I'm wondering is whether I'll be able to no reload it...

I'm expecting BG1 to be much more difficult with Hard Times and the Smarter Mages Pre-buffs + BG2 spells option (previously I was running with BG1 spells only).

SoA should get harder as well with the DEFJam experience progression nerf installed.

I'm also wondering whether the updated scripts will be tougher on my characters: David did spend sometime reading posts here.

Anyhoo. I'll sure I'll work things out and get back into the fray soon. Again: Best of luck to all the active challengers!

Best,

A.

@Alesia - Sorry to hear about your Barbie's last manicure.

Your new setup sounds much harder. I'm curious to watch how you deal with Hard Times. If you want to spice things up a bit further, use the Item Randomizer. Although one could argue that these two things just make BG1 more tedious. For you, however, it might just be a minor annoyance. Maybe you'll be able to simply skip all the items and just go bonk Sarevok over the head. Looking forward to your next attempt!

It should be. BG1 had become a formality due largely to the wealth of early gold. And setting aside my recent mishaps with Ashanti and Azriel, SoA had become a formality as well due largely to the wealth of experience. Hard Times and DEFJam should solve both problems.

I'm curious to watch how you deal with Hard Times.

As am I. I've recently noted that my standard route though BG1 relies heavily on early gold access. I expect Hard Time to completely change my routing and potentially my strategy in key battles. We'll see how it goes.

Looking forward to your next attempt!

Thanks. Hopefully it won't be too far off. :)

Best,

A.

That's the crux of it. The prices at the key early stores were jacked so high that I couldn't imagine ever being able to buy the wand of sleep, for example, or any of the artifacts of Kazgoroth. You're tempting me to switch back to Hard Times, too! If Alain dies on Ice Island that is. That's not clear yet... back to the fight.

Grond - kensai (update 4)

Grond had no problems escaping from Spellhold and is currently trying to find a seaworthy ship to get off the island.

He was pleased at the start of the session to finally find a bag of holding to simplify his inventory management - he might even be able to carry a few luxuries, like different belts, in future.  None of the enemies were able to make much progress against him, even with minimal buffs.

A series of summons occupied the attention of the lich while Grond stole up and Azuredged him.  Kitthix webbed the gauth, though it would have struggled to do enough damage to keep Grond away anyway.  He produced some boots of speed and boots of the north from Grophinet's machine.

For the final battle with Irenicus, a Gaxx haste killed Grond's clone.  He then moved back and made a first use of his book to cast true sight while Irenicus concentrated on the inmates.  The berserk warrior got a rare outing as a distraction while Grond threw Azuredge until it had beaten down Irenicus's stoneskins.  A final Gaxx haste with Axuredge then saw Irenicus on the run.
Image IPB

Two of the murderers ignored Kitthix, an efreeti and Ras to backstab Grond, but their backstabs are pretty pathetic and only caused minimal damage.  He agreed to take ship with Saemon.

Grond, L19 kensai, 155 HPs (-9 from Claw, +14 from ioun stone), 842 kills

Setben the fighter/thief continues his adventure...short update
Traveling with: Minsc, Jaheira, Nalia, Aerie

Setben's gang tackled the problems in the Umar Hills area. To keep the front-liners safe from the Shadow Fiends hold ability, I had Minsc off-hand the Arbane while Jaheira used the Spear of the Unicorn. This setup did not work well, at least not for Jaheira. For one, Jaheira gulped down every extra healing potion we owned in an effort to stay live. Two, Jaheira nearly died twice (like 3% health). And three, she DID die. Setben finally admitted this wasn't working, and relinquished the shield of harmony and let Jaheira use it with her Belm (1-hand). She did tank much better with this setup.

However, despite massive buffs for the final fight with the Shade Lord, Jaheira and Setben were stunned, and thus Jaheira was slain once more. The other three managed to win the fight. When we returned to Umar Hill battled some belligerent rangers. Plague of Insects and silence was too much for them.

Since we had no heal potions, the party made a quick stop by Watcher's Keep for a gem bag, all their extra heal potions and the potion bag.

Nalia had to go to the graveyard for her father's funeral, so the party cleared the enemies here since they were already here. Dogdancing was ready to continue her MP run, so ended the session here.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 18 - (update 1)
Quash, dwarf barbarian (Grond0) & Berud, dwarf barbarian (Gate70)

Having seen off Sarevok, the barbarians have joined the throngs in Athkatla.

Things have been pretty safe so far, with no alarms in the dungeon, the circus or freeing the Copper Coronet.  One of the slaver mages lasted long enough to cast skull trap; that didn't do enough damage to really trouble Quash, though he did let Berud finish off the last couple of guards.

On reporting back to Hendak about the demise of the slavers we were told to go and do the job properly - probably didn't release the girl near the trolls, so that will be a task at some stage.  However, the immediate priority was to improve inventory capacity.  Watcher's Keep helped with that - yielding up a potion case and ammo container among a few other things.  Quash expressed a desire to own Foebane at some point, but Berud told him he should practise a bit more before taking on those fast-moving statues.

Disgruntled at his continued lack of a magical weapon Quash firmly steered the duo to de'Arnise Hold (saving Renfeld on the way).  There was one scare there against Glaicas.  Quash initially tanked him while Berud raged in behind, but when he got down to 30+ HPs he attempted to pause the action in order to disengage.  That didn't work, so he tried again ... didn't work again (oh, the joys of multiplayer).  On the third attempt he did manage to pause, but by the time he eventually broke contact he had been hit again and I think would have been in danger with one more hit.

The golems were attacked individually - even the iron golem going down pretty quickly against a newly forged flail of ages.  With Lilarcor available as well as rage, the umber hulks were no problem.  Torgal and the giant trolls were again tackled individually.  The final one managed to make Berud retreat - not that that would have provided it with too much consolation as this time the transfer to Quash tanking worked seamlessly.

Stats
Quash, barbarian L10, 103 HPs (including 5 from Helm), 353 kills
Berud, barbarian L10, 117 HPs, 311 kills
Berud clawed back some of Quash's lead in kills (brought forward from BG1) in that session thanks to having better weapons for most of the time and being the main troll killer.

Grond - kensai (final update)

Grond heaves a big sigh as he joins the victims of my incompetence.

Before leaving the Asylum Grond went back inside briefly to check for loot.  He had to clear more undead from the exit route, getting him up to level 20 (hardiness).

A party of pirates attempted to co-opt a sturdy dwarf, but didn't find it easy to hit even AC2 and soon were decorating the wharf.  Grond safely boarded ship, but there were soon cries of 'dwarf overboard' and he ended up in Sahuagin city.  After my last solo run was interrupted by the king failing to provide a needed rope I decided to help the prince this time.

The lich tooth was recovered (carefully moving past those maze traps) using a kai hasted assault to kill the spectator before it could react.  On the way to find the prince he cleaned up a number of groups of Sahuagin, picking up the Cloak of Mirroring from one of them.  The king and his guards were soon chunked, though Grond had to keep moving to avoid them concentrating on him.  In retrospect I should have used hardiness there, but have probably got too used to doing without buffs (level 21 - whirlwind).  Hardiness was added when killing the prince, leaving Grond with a selection of ropes to choose from for his descent into the Underdark.

In the Underdark Grond dealt with a group of kuo-toa, separating them into groups of no more than 3 to avoid concentrated damage attacks.  With them accounted for he attacked some drow ambushers on a bridge - Azuredge doing nearly all the work here.  Another group of drow fared no better - near them a giant soul gem disgorged various enemies (along with a confused gnome).  Dealing with them got Grond to level 22 and greater whirlwind, which was immediately put to use on some myconids.

In the deep gnome village Grond stuffed a Balor back into its hole and was told how to get to Adalon.  The dragon gave him access to the drow city, where he picked up Firetooth (in case the elemental damage is useful; THAC0 is -11 even non-proficient), the Staff of Earth, a few more potions and an amulet of magic resistance.

After meeting Solaufein Grond was told to go and help to rescue Phaere.  He was watching out for an ambush on the way and pulled attackers back to avoid any concentrations.  However, after killing the backstabbing thief I didn't react to the presence of a caster and ...
Image IPB

I was well aware that maze or imprisonment were by far the things most likely to kill Grond and just before that had started the combat with the intention of engaging at range.  However, I got distracted by dealing with the thief, who was much more easily accounted for in melee and just lost concentration for a few (vital) seconds.

Oh well, back to the drawing board.

More that Foebane +3 is nothing special and it's a long time before it can be upgraded.
