Agreed. And that makes it a good kind of nuts. :)

We're fortunate to be able to find renewable pleasure in so simple a thing. And even more fortunate to find others who share our interest.

As I said: It's a good kind of nuts.

Alisa, Half-Elven Jester: The Underdark

As many of you are aware, I am on a personal crusade to screw-up the Dragon Egg quest in every way possible. Kudos to Alisa for discovering yet another way to get Solaufein killed and executing one more mad dash through the Kuo-Toan route.

Alisa arrived in the Underdark with the aid of the now deceased Saemon Havarian.
Posted Image

Seeing as how he was dead and all at the time, I suppose he can't be faulted for making the last stop Fish-ville rather than the previously agreed port of call. There is an Ettin, however, who was most displeased with Saemon's error.
Posted Image

(Not to mention a Fish-King.)
Posted Image

Little worthy of note happened in the City of Caverns all told- though Alisa did put her tactic for dropping high HP/high resistance foes to use for the first time.

Time Trap-> Improved Haste->Chaos Blade + Scarlet Ninja To
Posted Image

On to the Underdark.

In party battles, Alisa typically takes down priests first followed by warriors. They usually get the Scarlet Ninja To and Belm, but with the Drow stunning bolts in play, Alisa opted to go to The Reflex once Avoid Death expired.
Posted Image

For mages it's Chaos Blade + Scarlet Ninja-To (The dex drain works throuh Stoneskins, saving time)
Posted Image

FYI: Alisa's current buff regiment is Contingency: See Enemy- ProMW, Stoneskins, Rogue's Potion of Frost Giant Strength, Resist Fear, Spell Deflection, Spell Shield, Spirit Armor, Minor Spell Deflection, Protection from Cold, Protection from Fire, Protection from Evil, Blur, Mirror Image, Fireshield:Red, Fireshield:Blue, GoI (via Magic Flute) Improved Invisibility, SI:Abjuration, SI: Divination, Improved Haste, Greater Evasion, Tensor's Transformation.

The Myconid battle was actually quite fun. Here Alisa had the pleasure of darting around singing while playing fiery notes on her Magic Flute. This battle plan will appear again: it's cool and bardy.
Posted Image
Posted Image

The Balor's Stoneskins protected him from Alisa's blade, but, interestingly, his Aura of Flaming Death caused Alisa's Fireshield:Blue to kick in on each hit. The Cold damage killed him and got all the damage in fact.
Posted Image

The second Drow battle was a medley of the tactics seen in prior fights.
Posted Image

First some dancing...
Posted Image

then some song- with the Magic Flute proving handy once again.
Posted Image

(Opps! I need to get going. I'll try to finish up the Underdark soon.)

Best,

A.

 Russell II and band of Paladin friends
Areas Battled: D'Arnise Keep, Mencar Pebblecrusher's group

Russell II and friends cleared out D'Arnise Keep. There isn't much to say with the front-liners -7 AC and good Thac0/weapons, the result was never in doubt. Umber Hulks pulled by Joshua since he has confusion immunity with Lilacor. Nalia gave us 650 gold for our efforts.

Illlustrative Battle
Below illustrates the paladins "getting the drop" on opponents via sanctuary. You can see two melees by Amon, and Hanna by Brennan Risling. If she connects she will slow him, while Misty and Joshua try to take out Amon quickly.
Posted Image

It works exactly as planned - Hanna does slow Brennan, and Misty gets a critical for 40 damage killing Amon outright!
Posted Image

Misty and Joshua then work on Pooky. Ranged paladins take out the berserk warrior with their best ammo very quick. Hanna gets confused by something. Mencar pursues Hanna. Ranged paladins then switch to melee (with Paja staying at range for safety) and successfully wipe out Brennan Risling. Pooky doesn't last long, and finally Mencar by himself has no chance and falls last - success!
Posted Image

Team is level 9,  long way to go for level 10. Trademeet problems is our next quest to do.

Alisa, Half-Elven Jester: The Underdark (Cont.)

Following the second war party fight, Alisa paid her respects to Adalon and then entered the Drow city. She immediately buffed her pickpocket skill up to 220 (PoMT, PoP, Techno-Gloves) and then cleaned out the potion seller's inventory. Importantly, that meant she was essentially done with the Drow city: she had no real need to enter again after that.

The good party ambush was handled with Alisa's standard buffs and items with only one adjustment: the Pale Green Ioun Stone was shelved in favor of Jan's Spectroscopes for the Blindness immunity. Delayed Blast Fireballs from the Magic Flute and melee strikes did most of the damage.
Posted Image
Posted Image

N'ashtar, however, was dex drained to death through his skins with the Chaos Blade.
Posted Image

Damien's massive stack of Invisibility potions made him a nuisance, but with Alisa's AC, Stoneskins, and Mirror Images, he had no real hope of connecting. Jester's Song->Detect Invibility (via Spectroscopes) ultimately finished him.
Posted Image

That leads us to the question on every attentive reader's mind: how did I screw up the Dragon Egg quest this time?

Well, oh so curious ones, here's how it happened. Remember that Mordy Sword from the Chandrilla fight? It followed Alisa on her way to meet Solaufein. Sola, in his infinite wisdom, decided to attack it.
Posted Image

Right. Sola had no hope of injuring the thing of course. And since Alisa was Tensored, there was little she could do- save summon Mr. Efreeti and let his Magic Missles take care of it. That plan worked in the end, but by the time it did, Sola was down to Badly Injured.
Posted Image

Which is not a good way to start a fight with Umberhulks of course...
Posted Image

Phaere was not pleased to say the least. The Mind Flayers were pleasantly surprised though: they never imagined they'd be buffed by their hostage.
Posted Image

Before long the Flayers were dispatched. And after a brief amulet hunt in the southern tunnels, Alisa found herself desperately dashing through the Kuo-Toan route (Btw. In case anyone hasn't figured it out yet, all these Underdark "mishaps" have been largely intentional: I find the Dragon Egg Quest overlong and not particularly enjoyable. Opening the city, scoring the high value potions, and then getting Sola killed is a good way to move the plot along.).
Posted Image

Final encounter. Improved Haste->Time Trap->Chaos+Scarlet Ninja To for the Demons.
Posted Image

Then a few taunts directed at the Drow party...
Posted Image

before riding the Drow Wizard's Telefield to safety.
Posted Image

Alisa should finish up SoA relatively soon- likely tonight or tomorrow.

Best,

A.

SCSII reduces chunkings quite a bit.

It can reduce chunkings, it can also increase them- it depends on your install options.

There is a particular optional component which is expressly designed to limit chunking: Make Party Members Less Likely to Die Irreversibly. If you prefer to play without that component, you can of course. And if you were to do so while running, say, Potions for NPCs and Mage HLAs in SoA, for example, you'd likely find permanent deaths harder to avoid than in vanilla.

The Story of BlackStrider & The Motley Crue (Update #14 - Umar Hills):

While Alisa steamroll through the Amn the Avatars slowly trailing in her wake. Back to the City to uncover Umar Hills location (and sell some loot) we were ambushed by yet another bandits. Being invisible we separated thiefs from the mage and then engaged her. Alas she managed to Emotion me, Cassia and Grond,  then Dominated Pot (after he stripped her protections with Spell Thrust) and Feebleminded Krimlor. Krimlor countered with potion of strength while Alesia finished the mage with Vampiric Touch saving the day. With mage dead the remaining enemies were no big threat.

In Umar Hills we made all village tasks (Krimlor with Skellie vs Mimic were unstoppable) and headed to the Temple Ruins. There Krimlor with Fire Elemental cleared outdoors and we descended into the Temple. Much work for Azuredge there but not that difficult. Mazzy donated her sword for me for the future use and departure to the Trademeet. We sneaked past Shadow Dragon for now and engaged the Shade Lord. Krimlor destroyed the Altar with sunstone bullet and while the Shade Lord has high magic resistance that doesn't saved him vs Azuredge.

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

I don't know at the moment how to bring Valygar to the City with full custom party without killing him (and not loosing party member permanently). With Mazzy I joined with her (leaving Pot) and quickly took her sword before Pot talked with me but with Valygar that will not work I presume. The only way I think is to leave one party member in the house, remove him from the crew, open the Sphere and join him back. Either way we are now back in Athkatla considering our next move.

Current state:

BlackStrider: Blade(12), 70 kills (Shade Lord);
Alesia The Curious: Mage(10)/Thief(11), 12 kills (Khan Zahraa);
Grond The Pathfinder: Archer(10), 67 kills (Mencar Pebblecrusher);
Cassia The Furious: Shapeshifter(12), 84 kills (Cohrvale);
Krimlor: Fighter(9)/Cleric(9), 67 kills (Bone Golem);
Pot The Selfless: Mage(11), 30 kills (Sorcerous Amon).

to be continued...

@Serg - I've been in your situation before, and I think simplest is to kill Valygar, RP or no. After all in RL you would have a 7th member to your team, but the game prevents that, so I think an action that isn't consistent with RP should be fine, since you are only trying to get around a game limitation that isn't realistic in life.

A good idea 99% of the time. One of my multiplayer characters is trying to tell you not to do it against Kangaxx (not sure his thought waves can reach you from the imprisoned area) and my variant of Krimlor suggests not to do it at the ToB swamp against the skeleton cleric & mage.

Edit - Blinkin' cheek below, Tiax Krimlor knows all!

This baffled me for a moment, but I assume you're talking about the ray of enfeeblement spell, as opposed to feeblemind.  If it was the latter I don't think Krimlor would have had the intelligence to know what to do with a potionPosted Image.

If you aren't comfortable with killing Valygar, you could perhaps CLUA his body in (You could imagine that he's napping in your pack or walking alongside you). The code is MISC7L.

I personally wouldn't be opposed to that at all. As Corey said, you are working around an engine limitation in a sense.

Anyhoo. I hope you find a solution that suits you.

I'd be fine with that since you can't pickpocket his body, although finding imprisonment/freedom scrolls to temporarily occupy another party member might be an option in a modded game. I wouldn't recommend flesh to stone as I'm sure I've seen party members chunked as a result of that.

I won't be doing it EVERY fight, just where it makes sense. Also, I already know not to do it vs. creatures that see through invisibility innately - Kangaxx, Unseeing Eye, Firkraag, etc. Thanks for the caution nevertheless. I have inquisitors and undead hunters I don't need to be subtle vs. the skeleton enemies in ToB area e.g., sanctuary unneeded there.

Ouch... :blush: you are right of course.  That was a strength drain. Now I remember Jaheira was feebleminded in my previous run (Int drain) and she just stood still in place taking free beating.

You are right - I'm greatly uncomfortable with killing Valygar (or any other NPC). CLUA-consoling his body is indeed a simple solution but I think the way I'm thinking about (leaving someone in the house temporally) while being more time consuming is less *cheesy* so to say. BTW now I remember in your run with Avatars through BG1 you stormed bandit camp with only four of them (if I remember correct). How you managed to left the rest  out of the group (without them leaving permanently) back then?

Good question. In my BG1 install, released multiplayer characters will approach and initiate dialogue after discharge. If you leave the area before the dialogue, they'll be waiting for you when you return.

Coral, LG female elf stalker
The third attempt to escape sees Yoshimo offer to carry the heavy items everything of value, then he vanishes. Coral uses her stealth (level 8, 115%)  to retrieve the sword of chaos and shut down a radiant mephit portal. Only a few mephits are left in the area after Ulvaryl escapes, then Imoen makes a second appearance to get herself and Irenicus arrested.

Coral steps into the circus, dealing with a troublesome gnome called Kalah before purchasing a gem bag and scroll case. On to the slums where Gaelan Bayle cuts a deal before Cohrvale and Bregg take a couple of backstabs.

Salvanas has a change of heart after Coral teases him, and Amalas wants to fight. Coral has hidden before he attacks, and casts DUHM in the shadows before backstabbing him. To his credit he takes five more hits (& I accidentally clicked for her to drink elixir of health as control was passed back and forth before the fight commenced).

Yoshimo sulks as he is forced to hand back the items he stole, then Coral can afford to purchase the glasses of identification.

Leery - human wizard slayer (first & final update)

Unfortunately Leery's brave attempt came to an end thanks to a combination of bad luck and carelessness.

After escaping from the dungeon he did the circus, Copper Coronet, slavers and virtually everything in the Graveyard.  He used a green scroll to protect against petrification to kill the djinn at Trademeet and received the shield of harmony as a reward.  Having already killed quite a few sword spiders in melee under the Graveyard  with an AC of -2, I didn't expect any problems with one in the Druid Grove when his AC was -5. However, it hit several times early on taking HPs down to about 50.  I tried using vampiric touch as a way of restoring HPs (rather than the safer potion) only for the spell to be interrupted.  I still was not worried, but should have been - while Leery's aura was clouded the spider hit 3 more times to kill him.

Edit: couldn't resist loading the autosave to check how lucky the spider had been.  It needed a 17 to hit, so was extremely lucky to get so many hits in a short space of time.  The damage done per hit was also high by spider standards.

@Grond0 - Drats. Sorry to hear Leery left the party in Amn so soon. I hope you have a starting save for that character, as a character with Leery's stats would be worth starting in Candlekeep once more. Regardless, I wish you the best for your next attempt, whatever character you go with.

Wizard Slayers CAN be hard work, and I grant you they are for you since you heavily prefer solo play. However in a group, there's no reason a Wizard Slayer can't get through BG1, BG 2 and beyond. I wouldn't think group play with a WS would be any harder than any other class.

This is how I got out of Irenicus' Dungeon the first time, only to find out that Deidre was missing and the world map was screwed up. :(

That run through went far better than the subsequent one with a good installation. What's more a salesman turned up in the dungeom and I was able to buy a good crossbow string. He didn't turn up on the subsequent run. :(

Thanks for all the help in getting the installation right!!  :) Much appreciated. I'm pretty sure that it was the shortened cut scenes plus a reinstallation of a mod that caused the problems.

I probably will not use most of the extra merchants other than Deidre, but I like to have the option as to whether to use them or not. :)

This is how it went with an unmessed up set-up!

First Azengaard warned me of the up coming battle with Sarevok.

Killing Angelo was easy. All that was needed was to ensure that he didn't have any friends around.

Then I had to ensure that Sarevok did not join in the subsequent battle, so diverted him with a summoned monster. Tazok and Semaj fell out with each other. :)

Semaj was disabled usiong summoned insects. The chaos spell was wasted on another summoned monster. Jaheira was protected by chaotic commands. Semaj was foolish enough to stay in a poisoned area, though that did not have much effect.

Tazok was a bit more of a problem, but Jaheira's heal spell soon put Yoshimo back to full strength.

Sarevok actually killed Imoen, but after resting Jaheira brought her back to full health.

The time assassin killed Yoshimo, so harper's Call had to be used again.

Azengaard offered his congratulations.

Another time assassin killed Imoen. Using Harper's Call is getting to be a habit!

In contrast Amalas was no threat.

Some bullies in the promenade were largely made safe by the use of web.

A lich was disposed of by use of a sword that was in the chest.

I saved the servant by using web. Far more satisfying than letting him die.

Same again.

Saving Glacius was also more satisfying than killing him.

Separated Tor Gal from his mates by shutting the door. After that, it was easy.

In the Copper Coronet a number of slaves were freed, and Littleman, bear was found.
He was then returned to his owner and nearby a man buried alive was found. His attackers were found and killed in the Bridge District.
We found out that other murders are taking place there. We have also discovered that there are more slaves under the Copper Coronet. It looks like the party is going to be busy. We now have an additional party member called Anomen.

 Russell II the Inquisitor - team's first loss

I knew eventually it would get harder, and it did, but more on that in a bit. First though, the team took care of the Trademeet problems. We assisted the Genies and found their Rakshaksha (or however it's spelled), and defeated almost all enemies in the grove with simple protection from evil x6. Cernd won his duel with Faldorn once again while we watched.

We wanted the Rod of Resurrection of Mekrath's, so we headed there. The mephits were no trouble. With dispel magic and true sight, Mekrath didn't last long and success, the RoR is now ours. We only had to fight just a few Yuan-tis to get the planar gem.

I was pretty sure we could take on the planar prison, so we headed to the bridge district and did just that. And well, we did succeed, but at what cost...for the first time, I did NOT take the gnome's advice and we headed straight up the path. The first prison cell wasn't too hard, but yikes the 2nd one was tough, clay golem, stone golem and two mages, we got our first deaths of the game...
Posted Image
So we use RoR to get everyone up to speed and was time for the Warden! Boy this was a mess too, lots of deaths here as well. With all the thralls assisting him this was indeed a tough battle. Screenie below some of our problems - everyone chaosed except Hanna, and Paja and Misty are dead. Hanna is running out of heal potions too...
Posted Image
I suppose it had to happen eventually - Forrest got chunked! The chaos finally wore off Russell II and he resurrected Paja so she can dispel the mages protections and assist with her sun bullets - she used her arbane haste and this indeed did make a difference. The screenie below shows the dire situation just before resurrecting Paja.
Posted Image
With Paja's help, the tide finally turned and the team succeeded, but we lost most of our extra healing potions - we now only have 1 per team member.

After using RoR to bring the dead team members up to speed, Russell II decided tackling the remaining planar prison enemies would be unwise...well the team made it out of the prison, but Russell II made a huge gaffe - they forgot to loot Forrest's equipment! Doh! This is what was lost:
* shortbow +1 with the extra 1 attack
* martial staff
* full plate
* ring of protection
* Rod of Resurrection
* Charm Protection Helmet

The RoR is what we will miss the most, but the team must press on...we did the Harper Hold quest, not much to say, other than we got more heal potions which is what we wanted. Prebek's house was pretty clean with a single dispel magic carrying the day. We paid off Galen Bayle - sad the AoP will have to go to waste, so we sold it.

We decided to get Keldorn to fill our last spot, and next session we will help him with his quest.

Sorry to see another one go Grond0.

Wise, good luck (with the mod stability more than anything else!)

Corey, the Planar prison can be a real pain for a low level party. Solo you can just scoot around, with a party it's too easy to step into a cell or not be able to get into a fighting formation. I tend to grab the potion case early and have charname carry it just in case someone else is chunked.
