For now i want to finish my normal play of SCS2, it will be my first time, otherwise i just played with tactics and ascension. As for this chart, i checked it many times but i was sure things are different in SCS2 as it would appear it makes no difference. I even tried casting 3x spell thrust and it still said spell ineffective. Same with secret word and other such spells.

I have SCSII installed as well and Spell Thrust work just fine...

I just thought of 1 thing that could explain why spell thrust and secret word has no effect. Maybe they had Globe of Invulnerability running. That would explain a lot ..

Praden the solo level 9 fighter/level 11 thief continues his adventure - Update 1

Praden has escaped Chateau Irenicus - he fought everything except the mephitis on the outer plane. He also solved a circus problem. He used a little bit different technique than normal - he would kill a shadw - the werewolves would attack - Praden would do nothing except detect illusion - his skill is only 30% - however, he could just wait all day and this worked in clearing that tough circular area. As for Kalah, DUHM and direct attack with a +1 sword was a bit much for him.

Praden had conserved many of his heal potions from Chateau Irenicus because he did so much backstabbing - as a result, a stop by Watcher's Keep was imperative for the potion bag. On the way Suna Sune ambush triggered - simply improved invisibility (via ring) was enough to get Praden the victory.

Next task was to free Hendak. Praden hid in the shadows and backstabbed the one visible guard - this prevented the calling of the mages, which was a big help. Then Praden charmed the beastmaster via ring of human influence - the beastmaster was slain by his own pet, Tabitha. Praden than did a lot of running and backstabbing and a few fling shots - area cleared. The remaining guards could put up no appreciable resistance and Hendak was installed as the new proprietor. Praden then obtained sword of the roses and sling of seeking. Upstairs he got a protection from undead scroll.

Praden went to the graveyard, activated his undead scroll and cleared the enemies here - this got him the Namurra, his new weapon for a quite a while probably. Going back to the slums triggered the sick Harper - Praden then went to docks. Praden then backstabbed a cleric of Cyric, but then a shadow thief talked to Praden and the game crashed - reload from the graveyard. On the repeat, the cleric died and Praden returned the sick harper.

Next up was to obtain the horn of Valhalla, no sweat - at the same time obtained the boots of avoidance from the would-be killers of the man in red. Upgraded the horn ASAP - at this time purchased a scroll of protection from petrification.

Praden then went to Trademeet. He used his PfP scroll, frost giant potion, haste potion, and DUHM and attacked the genie with the genie lamp - success! Praden then went into the Genie temp and summoned his berserker friend and genie friend - together this team was victorious. This got Praden the important shield of harmony, which he will use for quite a while probably.

Praden now had enough to get the sword of flame. He can now solve the moored slaver ship and Trademeet since he can deal with the Trolls now. Ended session here.

In case anyone is curious, here is his equipment at this point:

Corey_Russell/Dogdancing Multi-player no-reload - attempt #5, Update 2
Coretrue - level 8 Inquisitor (protagonist)
Wewa - level 11 thief

Coretrue and Wewa continue to make progress. They solved the Circus problem pretty easily - with true sight, that removes much of Kalah's bite.

The duo then immediately headed to Watcher's Keep to get the potion bag - we got hit with the Suna Sune ambush. Wewa used 2 rounds of magic missiles on the mage, Coretrue did true sight then charged the mage - the mage died very fast, and thus the duo won the battle - AC 2 armor was upgrade for Coretrue.

At Watcher's Keep, Coretrue bought a gem bag and potion bag. Next up was to get a summon - so we headed to the bridge district to get the horn of Valhalla - Wewa's thief skills came in handy here. Wewa equipped the Horn.

Next task was to get Coretrue's full plate from Droth - he went down very fast, the horn of Valhalla didn't help really, as Coretrue was hitting hard and also Wewa got a nice backstab of 33 points. Forgot to mention, most of the time, Wewa's melee weapon is the Arbane.

Wewa looted the thieve's guild and we finally had enough to get her armor upgrade - AC 3 bracers. But on the way we got ambushed by a sick harper - we returned him to his friends, promised some mage named Xzar that we would help him, then finally got her AC 3 bracers from Ribald. This allows her to keep her protection ring and also the bonuses from wearing the studded leather, putting her AC to -2.

We then freed Hendak from his slave masters - was no trouble, with both Wewa and Coretrue being immune to holds. The duo managed to kill 3 of the cell occupants without the Beastmaster noticing. Coretrue then charged the Beastmaster with Wewa supporting with her "excellent" short bow - success! The Tuigan short bow was a huge upgrade for Wewa, she noticed the difference immediately.

We had time to do one more quest, so we battled the enemies in the Copper Coronet Sewers - this netted an upgraded sword for Coretrue - this makes him immune to hold, charm, and confusion - good defences. Corey_Russell decided that very soon the duo will get a ring of air control for Wewa, to protect her from spells, since she doesn't have all these immunities that Coretrue has - Coretrue also almost has double her HP anyways.

Ended the Session here.

Thanks Gate70! Coretrue is proving to be a monster (80% of the party's kills), and Wewa handles the weaknesses of an inquisitor - traps and locks. He often kills enemies before Wewa can even backstab.

Whether Spell Thrust and Secret Word bypass and or remove globes depends on your fixpack status. In vanilla, Spell Trust and Secret Word are both set at PL4- allowing them to bypass or remove MGoI but not GoI. With G3 v1-v9 installed, Spell Thrust is set to PL0 allowing it to bypass both the globes and remove MGoI but not GoI. With G3 v10 installed, Spell Thurst is set to PL4 and Secret Word is set to PL5. In this case, Spell Trust behaves as in vanilla but Secret Word will bypass or remove GOI.

Best,

A.

EDIT: You should find the above provided link to XYX's spell guide helpful but remember that describes vanilla- not SCS+G3. Be sure to keep track of the distinctions.

EDIT2: I just lost a long post I had composed on the spell defense method I use in my install. I'm not inclined to rewrite it. The upshoot of the message was this though: when is comes to spell defenses, the details matter. You need to have a thorough understanding of how the mechanics work in your install and also need to conscientiously keep track of what -exactly- your enemy is doing. The method I use is adapted to the particulars of my setup -a seemingly subtle change in my install such as the G3 version or my SCS install options could change things significantly. Additionally, it requires active monitoring of incoming attacks on magical defenses and the deployment of appropriate counters. Whatever method you end up developing, it will likely need to have those features to be fully successful.

Praden the SOLO level 12 fighter/level 15 thief - Update 2

Praden has made tremendous progress since last update. Other than Watcher's Keep and Windspear Hills Praden has completed all quests outside Athkatla. For Umar Hills Temple, he did lots of backstabs, and tanking when necessary. One particular group of was nasty - bone golem, two skeletal warriors and a Greater Mummy. Praden got down to 20% health - he ran for his life. Luckily for him, his enemies got caught on the walls, and he was then able to pick them off piece-meal - even individually, these enemies were hitting him hard. Shade Lord dealt with via Undead scroll and his two summons, Efreeti and Warrior of Valhalla.

By using all his resources, he defeated the trolls in the druid grove - Namarra silence solved both druid groups.

Somewhat surprisingly, Praden managed to clear the entire 1st level of Watcher's Keep including the statues. He did maximum buffs, most important being haste, to backtab/run/hide and repeat - took quite a while but this was a success.

Mencar Pebblecrusher's gang was taken out via a combo of lots of snares and backstabs/run/hide and repeat. Praden has bought quite a few haste potions from the potion merchant in the druid grove.

Praden did maximum buffs once more and engaged Tarnor the Hatchetman's gang - he opened with a backstab on Gauis - this one-shotted him for 100 damage.
Image IPB

Praden then quickly ran away - the enemies were so stunned, they didn't even follow, so then Praden returned and one-shotted Gollchobhair for 100 damage as well.
Image IPB

Praden then ran to the right - the melees tried to follow - Praden hid, returned to the casters who didn't move and backstabbed then meleed the survivor - easy-peasy. Tarnor was the next target - it took two backstabs of 85 and 95 but then he gave up the ghost - the sole survivor at this point could then not survive simple melee.
Image IPB

This cleared a path to Mekrath's Lair - as his buffs from Tarnor fight was still running, Praden tried to quickly wipe out Mekrath and his minions. It went smooth until Praden had to deal with 6 Yuan-tis, 3 of them being  mages. Long, long battle..oh forgot to mention, scary moment when Mekrath cast Finger of Death at Praden - Praden's saves at that point were only 2 vs. spells, so that could have been it - can't rely on luck for sure, but very soon Praden's saves will be very negative.

Praden decided to use a Pro Magic scroll for the Planar Prison, believing the haste boots to be worth it. Some easy battles, but a huge group of Yuan-tis appeared - Praden just slipped past them. Praden used two rings of air control to take the Master of Thrall's pets - this made the Master Ok, but dealing with the pets afterward was tough - I forgot to use the air elemental staff oops.

The battle with the Warden was insanely difficult as he had 6 Yuan-tis helping him. Several RoR heals were necessary or it was over. Sunstone bullets and the scimitar from Watcher''s Keep finally killed the Warden - the Namarra silences were also vital here. But success! Here's a screenie with the many dead from that battle:
Image IPB

The Kangaxx demi-liches with the body parts were both defeated with 7 snares - Praden is using a nice trick - ring of invisibility then keep resting until success - this way he can lay snares down repeatedly - his skill is only 65% right now so he still often fails - this way he doesn't have to make the trips to the Inns. This technique also took down the Kangaxx lich form - so Praden then just used his pro magic scroll and haste potion and DUHM to get Kangaxx's ring. Praden did try to pickpocket Kangaxx ring before combat but failed to do it in time.

Here's a screenie of his current equipment - if I missed any encounters, you might be able to tell from that.

This run is using the lessons learned form both Dentan, my solo Kensai-Thief run, and Picenon, my last solo fighter/thief in BG 2 - it's serving Praden well.

Praden the solo level 14 fighter/level 17 thief - Update 3
3.44 million experience

Praden has continued to make progress - incidents of note:

* Maevar problem solved. Key fight was Rayic Gethras - somewhat surprisingly, all it took to bring him down was Kithix, improved invisibility and +1 bullets...Maevar himself was easy, as Praden had previously laid down 6 snares near Maevar's position...then a lesser air elemental and Praden picked off the survivors.
* Fallen Paladins - once again, snares laid before hand, made the battle rather straight-forward. A lot of them survived, since they didn't go hostile at once, but it was no matter, Praden easily meleed those guys down.
* Praden paid Galen Bayle primarily for the +2 ring - lots of vampire ambushes - some were no problem thanks to the IMOD - however, the Sunsuki ambush was tough, as that was before the IMoD. Praden ran all over Waukeen's Promenade, backstabbing/running/hiding, etc. Even with his haste boots, he had to run quite a distance to get enough lead to hide, thanks to those fast vampires, but he did end up the victor, taking only a single level drain from the beginning of the fight - Sunsuki sadly did not survive.
* Sarles given the fake illithuim, while the real stuff used to forge the IMoD. Somewhat ironically, shortly thereafter Praden got the UAI, so now Praden just uses the Amulet of Power for level drain protection. The mace is still useful for clay golems and when tanking undead. Now that he does have level drain protection, the shadow dragon doesn't have much longer to live....
* The Dawn Ring obtained, very easily.
* Tried to return Xzar's friend, but Xzar had to take an assassin instead. Too bad, but lots of heal potions obtained during this quest, so was still quite useful for Praden.
* All of Linvail's tasks were done, except Bodhi's lair not quite finished out - Praden had only done enough to get the mace of disruption

Now that Praden has UAI, his equipment has changed a lot, see screenie:

Praden the Figthter/Thief - FINAL Update

Praden was working in Firkraag's Lair and was deciding if he should skip the wolfweres or not. He thought with haste, Frost Giant Potion and 133 HP, it should be OK right? Well no - Praden only got one of them to barely injured, and his HP was disappearing very fast and then he got boxed in - he tried a RoR heal but it didn't kick in time - back to the drawing board.

Well I could stealth past or use my rings of air control or ring of invisibility..plus I have potions, but yeah skipping them if solo seems like the best idea. I'm not sure how Picenon knew to do that...

Khrang, dwarf barbarian (update 1)

Having made a quick trip through BG1, Khrang is off and running in Athkatla.

He had no problems in completing the dungeon.  Rage immunities were an effective protection, but once he hit level 9 he could also get to a spell save of -3 (using Claw & Horn of Kazgoroth), which will be handy against some other spells / traps.

His main weapon is a 2-handed sword.  He also has short bow specialism, but didn't use that at all in the dungeon.  Here the sword is put to good use against Ulvaryl.

Here's his record on exit from the dungeon.

Corey_Russell/Dogdancing Multi-player No-Reload (Trilogy) - attempt #5, Update 3
Coretrue - level 10 Inquisitor, 103 HP, controlled by CR
Wewa- level 12 thief, 58 HP, controlled by Dog

The duo got some more done today.

First task was the slavers in the moored ship. We had completed almost the entire thing, when due to a mis-communication Wewa died to the blob trap near the stairs. Her portrait was visible. HOWEVER, when we went to the Temple, the temple would take our money...and NOT raise her! An obvious bug. We tried a raise dead scroll but that wouldn't work either - whatever happened, her character is bugged and forced to reload - 2nd time was actually a bit rougher, but no bugs this time and we completed the quest, taking a lot of damage along the way.

The duo decided to pay Pa'naii a visit for a "helmet" for Wewa. For safety, Coretrue used a protection from poison scroll to tank the spiders to get to Pa'naii's abode.

We didn't have any fireballs, so was strictly melee. Coretrue tanked great, however Wewa had a heck of a time. Pa'naii fell fast, but Wewa was dying, and had to RoR twice, extra heal and cure poison twice. During all of this, Coretrue was whacking the enemies blocking Wewa from the door - eventually she gets out. The game doesn't let Wewa stay outside, so instead she gulps an invis potion, while Coretrue finishes the enemies without further incident - Ioun stone Wewa's. Kithix went to Coretrue.

Next up was the graveyard battles - what a mess! Coretrue took massive damage, lots of heal potions gulped and and a RoR charge - he needs higher AC, will switch to axe and shield after graveyard finished. No deaths though...for the Crypt King, Wewa couldn't even hit it, but Coretrue used a haste potion and did the job. After graveyard, Coretrue switched to medium shield +2 and Stonefire axe (+3).

Wewa loves to loot, but having a heck of a time with all her ammo. So the duo decided to pay 1st level of Watcher's Keep a visit, despite their low level. Corey_Russell knew this was risky, so insisted that they used a protection from undead on Coretrue to make sure he pulled through - good thing they did!

Why? Because when they opened to the door to the statues room, ton of undead, poison mists, and vampiric mists and mephitis poured through the door! Wewa got to near death in couple of seconds - Coretrue suggested ring of air control but either that didn't work or the enemies saw through invis - Wewa died! Coretrue finished the enemies that he could see, raised Wewa via RoR..and she immediately dies while naked! Apparently there two vampiric mists waiting for her while invisible! Coretrue spent his wrath on these turkeys and activated true sight and cleared the general area - finally Wewa comes back to life and can loot her things.

The rest of the keep went very, very smoothly. The duo did not do the statues, nor battle those massive golems by the lich, but did the rest. Ammo belt for Wewa! Big help for her, plus quiver of plenty that will see use. Paladin bracers found, much appreciated.

The duo started the Maevar quest but still lot to go, so ended the session here...

Well done for surviving Watcher's Keep Corey.

Khrang, dwarf barbarian (final update)

Unfortunately, Khrang wasn't so lucky at the Keep.  He had skipped through the circus, Copper Coronet and slavers without trouble before going to look for more containers.

I was wary of the possibility of vampiric wraiths there and indeed they soon turned up.  Khrang immediately ran away before buffing and coming back in.  After a couple of tries a potion of speed, DUHM and rage was sufficient to kill one of the two wraiths.  I thought the second would be not too difficult, so initially tried it without the potion of speed.

At the point Khrang was down to about 50 HPs I decided to retreat, but couldn't get out of the door.  Initially I thought I must have mis-clicked and tried a couple more times before concluding that the vampiric wraith was actually sitting on the transition point.  It's unusual for that to happen - being blocked is common enough, but normally transition points are large enough that a single enemy wouldn't fully occupy one.  By the time I had decided Khrang wasn't going to get out like that he was down to about 15 HPs, i.e. a single hit would have a good chance of killing him.

I was, as usual, avoiding the use of healing potions, but I could have used a potion of speed to run the wraith round and unblock the exit.  However, I tried to do the circuit without the potion and the wraith proved to be faster than even a speedy barbarian!

I'm not quite sure what you mean by her portrait being visible - is that on the normal screen or in the temple?  In our setup raising is only possible when both characters are controlled by the same person, i.e. if Gate70's character had been killed I would need to take control of them before the temple will recognise that they are available for raising.

Normal screen. Ah, I didn't know that, we will keep that in mind if we need to do a temple raise again. Thanks for the info.

@Everyone: Does this mean Coretrue's run is over, since we reloaded, to what we thought was a bug but apparently is by design?

I say carry on, the reload wasn't because Coretrue died and what was perceived as a bug.

& vampiric mists see through invisibility in a similar way to Kangaxx, other demi-liches and at least some dragons and demons. Some of these ignore sanctuary too which I think is unfair.
