 Alisa, Half-Elven Jester: Madness Reloaded

Alisa the jovial jester is now cavorting madly in the marching mountains. It seems reasonable to anticipate varied responses to that bit of news with possibilities including: "It's about time!," "She's still alive?,"  "Meh: I hope Tamah is hungry..." and finally, "Who's Alisa?"

For those in the latter camp, here's a reminder:

Alisa is one of my core characters: I've been playing her for ages now. Interestingly though, I've never come remotely close to finishing a game with her. Alisa has historically specialized in cameo appearances. Every now and then, I find myself wondering whether a level 1 character can win this or that SoA battle. When I do, Alisa gets the call. She began her career by taking down Tree of Life Irenicus at L1 and has since dropped a surprising number of SoA foes while staying south of L2's lofty heights.

While Alisa has thrived in bit roles, her career as a leading lady is less impressive. I started a couple coventional games with Alisa as PC over the years but, for whatever reason, I lost interest each time- leaving our heroine stranded. Her SCS-Ascension No Reload attempt -which was started a couple months ago- was suppose to be her chance to finally shine. She did herself proud, but her achilles heel (AKA- Me...) nearly did her in once again: As she approached the SoA endgame, my interest waned and Alisa was left waiting in the ToB wings.

But no more: Alisa's run has been revitalized and she is now back on the trail to The Throne. And while I'll have to screen some back episodes to get you caught up with the storyline, she'll be ready to blaze on soon enough.

In the interest of saving time, I'll omit coverage of Kangaxx and Bodhi and jump straight to Suldanessellar. That will be followed by posts on Jon, Illasera, and Gromnir, bringing us up to date. From then on, I'll cover major fights and a sprinkling of minor enounters as per usual.

Anyhoo. Best of luck everyone. Alisa is happy to rejoin you.

Best,

A.

@Alesia_BH: Welcome back! It's good to see you posting once again. You've come back at a good time, as you have company in this thread as Zacner II has recently defeated Sarevok and is making his way through Amn.

Zacner II the level 9 Conjurer continuing his Trilogy No-Reload Challenge - Initial BG 2 Update
Traveling with: Jaheira, Yoshimo, Minsc, Anomen, Jan

Zacner II and friends made it safely out of Chateau Irenicus. Here he is:
Posted Image
The only thing unusual about this portion of his adventure is he told Yoshimo to dual immediately - this way Zacner II can shape Yoshimo as he wants. Thus, Jaheira and Yoshimo are in the front lines with their shields, Minsc supporting with Sword of Chaos currently, and with Anomen, Zacner II and Jan supporting with ranged fire/spells.

Circus solved simply with haste and true seeing.

Mencar Pebblecrusher's gang defeated as well - Zacner II did most of the initial work, with web, stinking cloud, cloudkill (x3), greater malison and fireball out of sight. Jaheira helped with a single entangle. This killed everyone except Mencar and Brennan Risling. Since we know Brennan likes to run, We concentrated attacks on him, except Yoshimo kept Mencar busy protected by Improved Invisibility (he tanked well in this regard) - Zacner II managed to get 2 sets of magic missiles on Brennan and foiled Brennan's escape. Group haste then finished off Mencar. Full plate a huge upgrade for Jaheira, Yoshimo will get the next full plate.

Anomen was recruited at the Copper Coronet. Somewhat surprisingly, he can cast a level 6 spell right at joining! Fantastic! Ariel servants are awesome...

Next, we recruited Jan in the government district. Zacner II had a potion of genius and many spells for Jan to memorize.

Freeing Hendak was super, super easy for this party. There were so many ways to do it, it wasn't even funny. Haste took out the guards by the cells, and then Zacner II took out the Beastlord using same strategy as vs. Mencar. The party then singly took out the survivors, and defeated the last of the slavers.

No Suna Sune ambush yet, guess we will try to the full plate for Yoshimo from Droth next.

Welcome back Alesia - I'm looking forward to seeing Alisa in action against the Five.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 23 - (update 3)
Rue, human inquisitor (Grond0) & Murl, human monk (Gate70)

Murl & Rue have continued to make pretty serene progress in Athkatla.

They started off by paying Gaelen Bayle.  That was well worth it for Rue, who took the Amulet of Power and ring +2.  On the way to Mook Rue tested out her new level drain protection when saving Sansuki, although Murl's ability to stun the attackers was the biggest contributor to the combat.

GravyGracen pointed out the location of vampire HQ and the duo quickly trod on a few spiders while making their way there.  As expected, most of the enemies there were no threat (Rue has natural immunity to both hold and charm).   I had been less certain about Tanova, but even she went down surprisingly easily.  Her simmy avoided a dispel by the simple method of standing in front of one of Tanova's lightning bolts, but Tanova herself found her protections stripped.  Enter Murl: he made use of a potion of invulnerability and RoAC before engaging in order to protect against disintegrate etc.  However, the protections became redundant once Tanova became the latest victim to stand still in amazement at the monk's stunning blows.

Bodhi, by contrast, was slightly more difficult than I expected.  She became the first enemy for quite a while to make Rue use a healing potion, although she ran away almost immediately after that.

Stats (continued from BG1):
Rue, inquisitor L10, HPs 127 (incl. 5 from helm, 10 from bracers), kills 384 (+24)
Murl, monk L11, HPs 73 (incl. 6 from ioun stone), kills 250 (+32), 0 deaths

Welcome back Alesia.

Grimwald Wyrmslayer has killed the Green Dragon south of Nashkel and has thus finally earned his name. :)

Sadly the person he was supposed to meet north of Nashkel didn't turn up, so he headed straight for the final battle.

Sarevok was weaked by backstabbing before the party homed in on him to slaughter him.

Alisa, Half-Elven Jester: Suldanessellar (Or What I Did On My Summer Vacation)

Aw, sweet Suldanessellar. Or so the brochure said.

Seeking respite from the hustle bustle of Athkatla, Alisa was understandably enthused when she spied images of an elven city replete with hot-tubs, garden patios, forest clearings and recreational activites to suit every taste. Alisa’s stay in the Suld City proved less than soothing however: bad management was to blame.

Following the recommendation of her peers, Alisa had booked the House of the Horn. She was pleased with her accommodations, but mildly put off by the oversized stony cockroaches wandering about. Happily, they were readily dispatched with an Age old remedy.

After tipping the elven staff and stowing her belongings, Alisa paid a visit to the resort’s recreation coordinator, a priestess named Demin who was, at the time of Alisa’s arrival, engaged in a calisthenics session with some fury headed guests. The guests were displeased with the interruption and insisted on a fight to the death. Alisa reluctantly obliged.

Alisa has long been aware that her self-defense methods are somewhat lacking. Sure, SI:A, SI:D, II, Spell Deflection, Spell Shield plus combat and specific protections is a good starting formula but that just cries out “Please! Please! Tag me with RRx2->Spell Thrust-True Sight->Breach!” And since Alisa is typically Tenser locked in while fighting it’s not like she can refresh her Spell Shield after that first Ruby Ray lands. Alisa has noticed that her Spell Shield gets a little stubborn from time to time and refuses to play by the rules. And she has also noted that the locals here in Amn tend to underutilize Spell Thrust. But she has nonetheless been surprised that her defenses have held up as well as they have. Suldanesselar’s Rhakshasas proved just as accommodating as Alisa’s earlier foes: Alisa’s passive defenses kept her safe, leaving her free to punch through the skins of her assailants at her leisure.
Posted Image

With that bit of unpleasantness dealt with, Alisa’s eyes scanned the room in search of the recreation coordinator. Eventually she found her: on the floor. Dead. Fortunately, she had dashed off a hand written itinerary sometime before exiting the mortal plane. Noting she had missed morning Qi Gong, Alisa moved on to the second item on the list: “Nature Walk with Nizidramanii'yt (crumpets and hibiscus tea).”

Always a nature lover, Alisa promptly scampered over to the rendezvous point. She was immediately enthralled -so enthralled that she chose to stop time to and drink it all in.
Posted Image

Even the curiously quick death of her suddenly clumsy host couldn’t spoil the moment. She munched her crumpets, sipped her tea, and then moved on to her next engagement: “Afternoon Meditation with Suneer (light lunch).”

Humming a soothing tune as she made her way to the temple, Alisa was rudely interrupted by yet another group of unruly furry headed guests. The exact cause of the disturbance was unclear but it had something to do with the volleyball nets being down. The elven staff’s explanations were not well received. Hoping to diffuse the tension, Alisa composed a humorous ditty on the spot: “Why the Cats Can’t Play Volleyball.” Her rouse worked- causing the furry guests to collapse in mid bluster. Alisa deftly settled the dispute soon after.
Posted Image

Cheery lass that she is, Alisa, had managed to look on the bright side up until this point. But while the grounds were lovely -and the nature walk splendid- those hulkying cockroaches and uncouth furry ones where starting to get her down. And the fact that staff members were dropping dead left and right was getting increasingly hard to overlook. Creaking open the temple door -and seeing yet more cockroaches- was the last straw.

Granted, the Leaflord Extermination Service promptly arrived on the scene, but by this time, Alisa had a bone to pick with management: It was time to pay a visit to the back offices.

Slipping through corridors unseen, Alisa made her way to the head-honcho’s office. To her surprise, Alisa saw none other than the man responsible for previous unpleasant stays: the one behind that atrocious Chateau and that grim island with nary a fruity beverage. It was none other than Irenicus: reigning king of resort ripoffs.

Having learned long ago that subtle reasoning was wasted on the fellow, she chose to make her point concisely and forcefully: like a Spike.
Posted Image

Though usually fond of words, Irenicus had no retort and instead apparently concurred- uttering naught but “Ahh!” His offer of a free weekend at a new theme resort down under was eyed with suspicion, but Alisa in the end followed. Some lessons are never learned it seems.

Best,

A.

Thanks for the warm welcome back everyone!

@ Alesia - really looking forward to your ToB no-reload tactics :)

That's kind of you to say. You shouldn't expect anything innovative or refined though. Strange as it may seem, I've never run a bard before or even an F/M (save my F/M/C in IA). I'll essentially be winging it.

a little nostalgic on the Ascension mod myself.

It has the merit of being fun while also accomodating a wide range of playing styles. It can be trivialized by pushing the envelope and or experimentating, but I find that if I impose restrictions and play with moderately powered characters, it works out reasonably well for my purposes.

If I could add in the Defjam 50% or 75% EXP progression nerf, I'd be happier with my setup, but, sadly, I haven't been able to install it. That's a pity because while I enjoy my games presently, rapid EXP progression does spoil the fun in SoA.

Anyhoo. It's good to hear from you Saros. Know that I've been enjoying your IA run!

Cheers,

A.

Zacner II the level 10 Conjurer - update 2

So the group heads for the docs. We meet up with a Cleric of Cyric who tried to convert us - we refused and he attacked. We didn't do anything special except Jan tried his flashers. The flashers were always resisted and Jaheira got held - however, that's not too much trouble when the opponent is dead. Immediately muggers attacked. Since Jaheira was still out of action, the rest of the party handled this. Anomen summoned an ariel servant and that was more than enough to tip the scales heavily in the party's favor.

Next up Droth in the Seas Bounty - oops, there's Ployer waiting for us! Jaheira got cursed...While there, we attacked Droth, doom and hold were too much for him. No rep loss, and another full plate for the party, went to Yoshimo this time.

We then hit the slums and buffed (cleric buffs only, no license) and proceeded in. For safety, Jan and Zacner II opened with improved invisibility on themselves, Yoshimo and Minsc attacked Ployer, Anomen does something (I forgot) and most important of all - Jaheira does insect plague on Ployer, hitting his mage buddies and giving us victory. Protection Cloak +1 and AC 6 bracers were found in the loot. Jaheira got the cloak while Zacner II got the bracers. He can now forget his armor spell and put something else there.

We then started the Lilacor quest but qucikly realized we were full inventory! Oops, went and sold. Since we had the cash, we springed for sling of seeking for Anomen and +2 medium shield at Ribald's for Yoshimo. We have encountered numerous vampire ambushes along the way, We've kept our noses out of those encounters when possible, we are in no shape for vampires, especially with no magic license.

Next session will try to get the Lilacor quest finished and deal with the slavers in the moored ship.

Corey_Russell/Dogdancing Multi-Player No-Reload Update 2
Loki - gnome, level 7 fighter/level 8 cleric (protagonist)
Bait - Human level 7 berserker > level 9 thief (dual)

Loki and Bait got out of Chateau Irenicus OK. Bait unlocked her berserker abilities and she has ***** in Long Swords, so she should be able to do some great damage with that config.

Loki and Bait also solved the circus problem, basically ignoring the werewolves and beating up the shadows. We had some pathing issues but we managed.

Next session will talk to Galen and get our glasses of identification to save us some cash, then potion bag.

Zacner II the level 11 Conjurer - Update 3
Traveling with: Jaheria Yoshimo (dualed to fighter), Minsc, Anomen, Jan

The team has continued to make progress. They solved a little riddle in the sewers and got a nice sword for Minsc.

They then attacked the slavers from the Sewers entrance. The battle went just fine, no problems at all. But for the blob trap, Jan detected it and tried to de-trap it, but he set it off instead...first party death. So the team trudged back to a temple to get Jan back to speed...Anomen decided maybe he should memorize raise dead spell after all. The return was much smoother..poor slavers got hurt bad by Zacner II..he crept up invisible, then backed out of sight and cast cloudkill and booked it back to the party...a single slaver mage survived, but with concentrated fire he had zippo chance. Hendak was pleased by our success.

Next up was the Suna Sune ambush. They attacked from the rear, so Jan went invisible and Zacner II tried to go improved invisible, but got interrupted. So Zacner II ran away and did mirror image instead. Jaheira's call lightning was rather devastating to Suna Sune's team and they fell rather fast.

Next was helping the people of Umar Hills. The party bought magical ammo with what little funds we had, and then proceeded to kill many undead. In a rather pleasant surprise, when the undead ambushed us at the mirror, Anomen's turn undead destroyed those shadows! Very safe this way...

The team played it carefully, using all their resources they had, and took out the enemies, mostly shadows, shadow fiends, and skeletal warriors and a single bone golem - complete victory in this respect.

Even though the party is only levels 9-11, we did have an ariel servant and fire elemental available. Also, we have two lightning wands - combined Zacner II was pretty sure the team could win with this. He was right! When anyone got hurt they would run and heal, otherwise spam the wands and this succeeded - Zacner II even got the kill shot. We had some trouble with our summons going hostile from our bouncing bolts, but magic missiles sorted them out.

Posted Image

We did a few buffs for the shade lord, but he was overwhelmed, though Anomen's true seeing sure wasn't helping the Shade Lord. Success! We reported to the mayor, and Minsc was very pleased with our reputation.

We needed a potion bag so stopped by Watcher's Keep - Anomen then got summoned to his father's house. Long story short, Zacner II encouraged Anomen to follow the lawful path and Anomen relented. Getting a little low on heal potions, will check out the thieve's guild next and see if they can help us out somehow.

Alisa, Half Elven Jester: Irenicus in Hell

It didn't take long for Alisa to figure out that accepting Jon-Jon's offer was a mistake. She had been through figurative hell before, but this was literally hell. That's right: literally. Umistakably, undeniably: hell- proper and true. And what, you ask, is the best course when you find youself in hell? To Alisa the answer is simple: sing, dance -savor the moment- and fillet the punk who dragged you there.

But first, why not kill his friends?
Posted Image

Six traps -set before resting- granted Alisa all the time she needed.
Posted Image

Ok: not quite all. This fella had narrowly escaped the Time Trap assault. A Spike Trap fixed him.
Posted Image

All that remained was to finish off Jon-Jon. Alisa slipped off, laid down another stack of time traps, decked him with Carsomyr, and then finished him- quickly and mercifully.
Posted Image

And that was that: simple-dimple. No injuries, no sweat. Alisa is on to ToB.

Best,

A.

Congrats Alesia on getting through SoA - best of luck in ToB. Lot of enemies there, are buffs all you need there too, or you going to have summoned friends?

Lots happening here so good luck. I have two characters ready for SoA, not sure which to break out first as a brief respite from the death thread.

Trog the barbarian arrived on his own but could quickly hire Edwin/ Korgan and un-fire Viconia for some lawfully chaotic neutral evilness.

Mayhem the wild mage can't see Ajantis, Kivan or Khalid; Jaheira is nearby and Imoen can be heard somewhere.

Thanks.

They certainly won't be used extensively.

As with my other characters, you'll likely see occasional tactical use of summons in specific circumtances (ex- use of Ras to draw a foe out of invisibility while remaining invisible) but little dependance on them.

Alisa, Half Elven Jester: Improved Illasera

Improved Illasera can be deadly. Or completely irrelevant. It all depends on the character and the strategy used.

Care to guess which one applied in this case?
Posted Image

I'll give you some time....

...

Need more time?

...

Ok ready?

If you picked deadly, then you were totally, completely, 100%...

Wrong.

Illasera and her not-so-merry band did not survive Alisa's opening Time Trap melee barrage. They might as well have been kobolds...
Posted Image

Doot-ta-dooh...Yeah. Not much more to say about that really. For the record, the buffs -which ended up being irrelevant save Improved Haste- were cast before touching the statues. The three Time Traps were put in place after the warning.

Gromnir is next.

Best,

A.

Btw. Alisa's standard buffs at this point are Contingency: See Enemy- ProMW, Stoneskins, Spell Shield, Spell Deflection, Minor Spell Deflection, Spirit Armor, Resist Fear, Protection from Magic Energy, Protection from Electricity, Protection from Fire, Protection from Cold, Pro Evil, Blur, Mirror Image, Fireshield: Red, Fireshield: Blue, Improved Invisibility, Improved Haste, Globe of Invulnerability (via Magic Flute), Spell Immunity Divination, Spell Immunity: Abjuration, Tenser's Transformation

Nice, the best way to stop improved Illasera is to not let her start.

I thought a sneak preview of one of my runs was in order. Low level start - less than 65k xp apiece.

Jaheira (fighter 5 druid 6) / Mayhem (wild mage 7) / Imoen (thief 7)
Imoen takes advantage of the confusion to rescue Mayhem, and Jaheira is released a few moments later. Minsc tears the bars of his cage apart but Boo takes a dislike to the ferret familiar (which Imoen has snaffled and refuses to hand back to Mayhem until it is released and re-acquired) so the ranger hamster symbiant leaves the three women to fend for themselves.

As the session draws to a close Mayhem decides a dweomer can’t be that dangerous...Posted Image

@Gate70: Nice, Sunfiring your party. Good thing Imoen and Jaheira are fairly loyal...though Zacner II's Imoen did something similar in Durlag's Tower lower level, where she skull-trapped the party to try to survive ghasts, which worked, but left the party battered...

Out of curiosity - do you run Spell Deflection and Minor Spell Deflection simultaneously? What the point in that or am I miss something? If say spell up to lvl 7 hit you which one of those two absorb it?

& here's Trog on his way out with everything he can carry (plus a few bits that he told Yoshimo to hang on to).

Edit: No ring of protection, so back he goes from the exit to pick it up (was busy dumping wands and forgot to add it - good job I checked the screenshot before leaving).

Since Alisa is typically running II, SI:A, and SI:D she rarely has to worry about direct targetted damage spells. What she does have to worry about, however, is protecting her Spell Immunities from in coming attacks on magical defenses which target through II. She primarily uses Spell Deflection for that purpose: it provdes a second layer of protection for her SIs. Just to clarify, if an enemy hits her with Ruby Ray, her Spell Shield will catch it. And if a second Ruby Ray is cast, Spell Defection will intercept that- leaving her SIs un touched.

MSD, on the other hand, is there as a Breach stopper in longer fights. The duration of MSD exceeds that of Spell Immunity. If Alisa is in a long battle and SI:D+II has run out, she can become vulnerable to Breach. MSD, however, will be in place to intercept that.

Best,

A.

Corey_Russell/Dogdancing Multi-Player No-Reload - Update 3
Loqi - gnomish Fighter/Cleric, controlled by CR (protagonist)
Bait - Human Berserker/Thief (dualed), controlled by Dog

The party made good progress this session and got several important objectives accomplished. We first had to talk to Galen and purchase the glass of identification.

Next up was to try to go to Watcher's Keep for a potion bag - as expected, we got hit with the Suna Sune ambush. The duo killed the enemies fast, main play was firebreath potion on the mage. Plate +1 went to Bait so Loqi can keep using his magical ring.

At Watcher's Keep, we got the potion bag and rested, preparing Loqi's spells for Trademeet. We need the Shield of Harmony for Bait, since as human her saves aren't as good. When we tried to go there we found Remfeld - we saved them silence and hold person doing most of the work - the hold person caught all 4 enemies surrounding Bait, which worked out real nice.

Once we actually got to the docks, lots of fighting, two shadow thieves talking to a vampire attacked us as well as 4 muggers - but before doing anything, Loqi had summoned 5 skeletons, so they paved the way for the team rather easily. Loqi didn't have the skellies for these guys, but for the Priest of Cyric - eventually Priest was taken down. Bait got yet another level on returning Remfeld to his Harper friends. We sold out junk at the shadow thieve's guild and finally headed to Trademeet once more.

Once there, Bait laid down 7 basic snares around Taquee (genie bottle guy), by resting/laying as needed - we got several dream sequences out of the way by doing this. Loqi had Bait gulp a frost giant potion and hast potion. Next Loqi went into the tent BY HIMSELF, cast 5 skeletons and sanctuaried. He then had the skellies attack the genies. This drew out the flesh to petrification spells on the immune skellies, triggered the snares outside. Bait then moved in to assist Loqi, and Loki cast protection from evil and defensive harmony - success!

Now Bait has the Shield of Harmony - next session we can deal with the Copper Coronet issues and get the Sword of Roses for Bait.
