Alisa, Half-Elven Jester: Gromnir (Or The Tears of a Clown)

If there's a smile on my face
it's only there trying to fool the public.
Because when it comes down to the sordid truth
of this fight well I really botched it.

Don't let the screenshots convince you
honey that I blithely breezed through.
'Cause really I'm mad, I'm madder than mad.
I ignored Berena Elkan
And her spear dispels: I'm a peon.

Now there's some sad things in BG land
but ain't too much sadder than
a speared, dispelled jester

I feel dumb like Uncle Fester.

Image IPB

Doot. Doot. Doot. Do-ta-do-ta-do-ta-doot.

Yeah. That's my way of saying I didn't get this one right. I didn't futz it terribly, but I didn't handle it particularly well either. Fortunately, whenever I offer up a Plan F, Alisa improvises a Plan B. And she's getting pretty good at it.

So: What went wrong? You can guess from the little ditty right? I allowed Berena Elkan's spear to dispel Alisa's buffs. And when Alisa is buff-less, she's weak and vulnerable. What was her saving grace? Her song: you needn't be a juggernaut when your foes are all dozy.

To the play by play...

In prior runs, I've explained the basic logic of the Gromnir fight in military terms. You essentially have an infantry position to the west (Gromnir and Ramazith) supported by a pair of artillery batteries to the west and east (casters) and a flanking unit to the northeast (Berena and Elder). If you head west, charging the infantry position, then you take artillery fire from both the eastern and western batteries while inviting the flankers to flank- all while slugging it out with the infantry: That's not good. In the alternative, if you head east and eliminate the flankers -while staying clear of the western artillery battery- and then sweep further east to wipe out the artillery battery there, then you can supsequently enage the now unsupported infantry without ever having to deal with the wesstern artillery at all: Life gets simpler that way.

The problem is that it gets too simple. And that's something I wanted to avoid: I deliberately sent Alisa west in order to draw Gromnir's mages into the fight. That was fine- I don't regret that decision. What I do regret was ignoring Berena Elkan and her dispelling spear.

For a character like Alisa -who is formidible when buffed and difficult to debuff through conventional means- dispelling weapons are one of the greatest threats faced: they should be taken out of the action promptly- preferably under ProMW. I was well aware of this heading into the Gromnir fight, however, I felt like attempting a quick Chaos Blade based take down of Gromnir nonetheless, mostly for kicks. This wasn't a terrible idea: it just didn't work. Here's why.
Image IPB

A string of Time Stops interupted Alisa's Chaos Blade assault -preventing her from getting the full two rounds of contact needed to dex drain Gromnir to death. And since the dex drain only lasts 30 seconds, the progress Alisa had made soon went to naught. Failing to take Gromnir down in 2 rounds isn't much of a tragedy in and of itself. The problem was that Alisa's failed gambit caused Berena to out-live Alisa's ProMW. And while Berena was taken down fairly soon, she did land a dispelling blow before falling.

Touche.
Image IPB

So: time for Alisa's Plan B: run and sing.
Image IPB

Alisa kept on the move, singing while countering spells, and then looked for opportunities to attack. Karun the Black was the first to fall victim to Alisa's beguiling song.
Image IPB

Gromnir's Battle Mage stayed on her feet, but an Arrow of Dispelling created an opening for Alisa to end her with the Magic Flute .
Image IPB

Ramazith was lulled to sleep by the song soon after and was dispatched before regaining consciousness.
Image IPB

The rest of Gromnir's lackeys were then dropped in straight forward fashion leaving just the big fella himself. And how was he taken down? Slow footed and now devoid of trap foiling friends, Gromnir was cut down in black and white.
Image IPB

While I do feel a bit foolish for letting Berena strip Alisa's protections, utimately Alisa prevailed and I had fun putting her bard skills to use in the process. My sad song aside, that's nothing to cry about. Alisa is off to the Marching Mountains.

Best,

A.

Alisa, Half-Elven Jester: The Improved Fire Giant Temple

Alisa's jaunt through the SCS Fire Giant Temple was pleasantly uneventful: she swept in, felled her foes, grabbed the hearts, and moved on. I'll cover this quickly in the interest of bringing Alisa's reports up to date with her progress.

The Welcome Party

Alisa's plan in the opening battle was pretty straightforward. Roranach's + Adventurewear + The Defender + Pro Fire, makes the hammer wielding giants essentially irrelevant- leaving the axe wielding Elites as the only threat. Taking those blokes down under ProMW (Chaos main, Scarlet Ninja-To off) , allowed Alisa to finish the others at her leisure (Scarlet Ninja To main, Defender off).

The Elites...
Image IPB

And then the hammer punks.
Image IPB

Didn't I Just Leave this Party?

The opening battle was followed by a fight with a similar crew. The tactical considerations here were essentially the same, however, since Alisa's Tenser's was by now tapped, she put her Time Traps to use. The traps were set near the entrance, and the giants were lured in.
Image IPB

Returning to the encounter area, Alisa was surprised to find a laggard. Trapless and still Tenser-less, Alisa turned to her song.
Image IPB

Time Stand Still

The triggered battles were all fought in black and white.

Golems.
Image IPB

Lichy-poo.
Image IPB

Radiskull.
Image IPB

Intruder Alert!

Next up was the temple intrusion.
Image IPB

The dangerous fellas were taken down in black and white (Chaos Blade main, Belm off).

Berenn
Image IPB

The Brimstone.
Image IPB

The Elites.
Image IPB

Finally the hapless hammer wielders under Tenser's.
Image IPB
Image IPB

Imix

Who calls Imix Prince of Fire? The Wave Blade calls...
Image IPB

And that was that: Yaga Shura is next.

A.

Zacner II the Half-Elf Conjurer - Update 4

Zacner II decided it's high time the team solved the Trademeet problem. So his team headed into the grove - some initial trolls, no problem with Jaheira's Iron Skin and Yoshimo's -8 AC. Next up was some spiders - we did this part carefully, but success once more. Then lots and lots of powerful trolls at the mount - we used buffs like protection from evil 10' and group haste and took all the trolls outside and inside the mound.

Next up group of shadow druids fighting trolls - we helped the druids at first, but they still went hostile, and paid for that mistake with their lives. Zacner II decided he wasn't going to be so generous with the next batch of druids. Zacner II went invisible, moved up and out of sight fired web/stinking cloud/cloudkill x2 then backed off - this killed all the druids without the party even being attacked. This worked so well, that the trolls guarding Belm were also given a cloudkill - this only killed 1/2 of them but still every little bit helps. For the moment, decided Jaheira would tank with the Belm.

Next up, lots of Spore Colonies - since Yoshimo and Minsc are the only people with immunity to confusion, they charged those enemies - Minsc had to retreat and heal then dived back into the action - spore colonies will no longer be a threat.

Last major enemy the party had to face were three powerful druids - Anomen said he would take care of this. Anomen cast two ariel servants, went into sanctuary and moved up - while still hidden, Anomen waved the servants to attacked and then moved back to the party to wait results - yes the servants won the fight!

Jaheira decided to take on Faldorn - we didn't have many buffs left, but Zacner II gave Jaheira a very nice buff - Improved Invisibility! Sure enough when the fight starts, Faldorn just stands there as she can't target Jaheira. Meanwhile, Jaheira casts insect plague, fire elemental and nymph - Jaheira then changes into black bear and whales on Faldorn - success! The Mayor of Trademeet was happy to hear of our progress.

Right about now, a messenger told Jan his old flame was home, with her sick little girl. So we go to the Slums and basically, Jan's uncle says we need to find the hidden to help the girl. So first we go to the Jysteev estate and the Lady there then referred us to the hidden in the sewers of Copper Coronet - then we had to go to Seas Bounty and tell Thumb we were a seeker - he referred us to the Five Flagons at the Bridge District. So then we go there and battle some dangerous Githyanki - however, we did max buffs before the encounter, and that allowed us to the kill the mage before he could get off his mordy sword (whew! I like using mordy swords, but facing them not so much) - success! We report to the Hidden, he says the girl is cured and in fact when we return to Jan the girl is fine. His old flame leaves Jan, Jan rejoins the group and we continue on.

Since the party is so adept at troll-killing and both Yoshimo and Jaheira have troll killing weapons (sword of flame, blackblood club), we decided to pay a visit to D'Arnise Keep. We are working our way through, just beat Glaicas. For the Yuan-Ti mage, Yoshimo defeated him via Improved Invisibility cast by Zacner II (never knew this spell was so effective on so many BG 2 enemies).

After seeing Imix Waved I am thinking the jester has a Ravager +4 halberd that is nothing special, are you intending to upgrade it?

Jaheira / Mayhem (wild mage) / Imoen
Yoshimo scurries away just as Mayhem has a wild surge, congratulating himself on not joining the party.Image IPB

Four mephit portals are quickly shut down then Jaheira makes a gruesome discovery. Imoen tries to comfort the party widow “It would have been quick with the girdle of gender tightened up that far on him...or her”.

Is that your way of asking whether Alisa is headed to Watcher's Keep? :P

Probably not. I've never really been fond of either of the mega-dungeons: they just feel like insanely long detours to me.

I sometimes find myself thinking that I should do them, but I rarely feel that I want to. At the moment, I'm not feeling the urge this time at all. I suppose that could change though.

Alisa, Half-Elven Jester: Yaga Shura

A riddle: What's red and white and dead all over?

I'll give you a hint: It's not a jester.

Alisa entered the Yaga Shura fight with a simple efficient plan. She exited with a simple efficient kill. She is now one step closer to The Thone.

Upon arriving at the Siege Camp, Alisa cast Invisibility and then headed north to a little frequented nook. Once there she put down a stack of Time Traps.
Image IPB

After taking her long duration buffs, Alisa cast invisibility again and headed west to great Yaga. She nicked him with the Wand of Frost, and then slipped from sight once more.
Image IPB

Unseen, she layered on her short duration buffs and then put down one last Time Trap in the southeast corner of the map.
Image IPB

Yaga and friends arrived.
Image IPB

And then went nowhere: fast.
Image IPB
Image IPB

The casters were nixed in black and white, but the Lieutenant Fighter and Lieutenant Thief were iced live in technicolor.
Image IPB
Image IPB

Alisa then withdrew invisible, refreshed Improved Haste via the Improved Cloak of Protection +2, and fed Yaga some Chaos.

Fin.
Image IPB

Not exactly a daring plan, but effective. Alisa is off to Amkethran.

Best,

A.

Trog (Barbarian: 9 >10)
First things first, the wench (Viconia: Cleric 9 > 10).
Next, the hired help (Korgan: Berserker 9).
Finally the difficult Thayvian, meaning Viconia and Korgan must help me do some chores.

Suna Seni and Eldarin are swept aside on our way to the Temple district where it is 6pm and a gaudy necklace can be collected in a boring fashion. Rayic Gethras has a bad day with Korgan hurling axes as I use a shoddy longsword and Viconia alternates between bullets, a dispel and two skeleton summons.

Edwin wants us to get some documents, fortunately Korgan is stood beside Marcus. He refuses to play ball, demanding money. Korgan lets his axe do the talking (reputation drops from 18 to 9) and Edwin mumbles about the 5 seconds it took to complete his job before sending me downstairs to MaeVar. He wants Embarl dead, and 5 seconds later he has the dagger - quite how the waiting Viconia passed it to me is beyond comprehension. Back I go (Edwin: Conjurer 9 > 10).

I suggest he change his spells as we grab the evidence and depart. Renal Bloodscalp asks us to dispose of MaeVar so I add it to my to-do list, realising Edwin and Korgan are itching to visit the Graveyard district (only 3 hours have elapsed since Korgan has joined but want to get it out of the way as I hate these hanging timers).

We rest after killing some spiders then clear a small horde of undead or two before Edwin retrieves the Nether scroll and Korgan finds a tomb has been looted. Renfeld delays us just long enough for the Pimlico estate to also be looted before we can get there. Korgan and Shagbag exchange a few unpleasantries and then we set about each other.

14 hours have passed without rest, and the poor equipment and lack of experience combine with the various traps to leave us in a ragged state. Edwin is refusing to cast spells outside but Viconia lands a hold / silence / doom combo that leaves Shagbag somewhat exposed and Korgan with a massive “halo”. Image IPB

(Thus the party of 4 are formed and their timers de-activated so we can settle down to some serious looting and obnoxiousness assuming I can remember the evil side to tasks from now on. If Imoen is unlucky she’ll have their company and that of Sarevok in ToB).

Zacner II the Half-Elf Conjurer - Update 5 - Disaster strikes
Traveling with: (Yoshimo), Jaheira, Minsc, (Anomen), Jan

The team handles the problems at D'Arnise Keep with no problems.

Zacner II wasn't sure what to do, decided to work on the Maevar Task. It was night, which allowed us to pick up the necklace from the Talos Weathermistress easily, and also allowed Anomen to get his knighthood status.

We reported our success to Maevar, and get our next task for Rayic Gethras. We should do OK with that task...

However, we go down the stairs...and get hit with the 4 vampire ambush! We paid Galen so they WILL attack. Jan happened to be in the front - he will get level drained to nothing, so I turn off AI and have him go invisible - of all characters, he must survive after Zacner II. Zacner II was far away from the team, so it cost him precious seconds before he  could lend support.

Since Jan hid himself, Anomen was targeted with his bad AC - in desperation, I had try to turn undead, but it didn't seem to do anything. Jaheira and Minsc used their melee weapons, but Minsc was getting dangerously low - Anomen getting hit and paused it - he was level ONE! He's going to get level drained to nothing - in Vanilla BG 2, if you die by level drain all equipment other than quest items disappear forever. He didn't have much that was important but he did have 5 extra healing potions and sling of seeking, I took those off - and sure enough, action resumed and Anomen was CHUNKED (dead forever).
Image IPB

Meanwhile, Zacner II trying to help with things like haste, slow and magic missiles but he got caught on a railing and lost precious seconds before I realized that. Jan shows himself and fires off some magic missiles as well. Minsc runs away, he's level 3 almost dead - Yoshimo gets hit rapidly in succession and Yoshimo is CHUNKED!
Image IPB

The mages in the party are finally pumping out their magic missiles, Minsc tries to help, despite the extreme danger to himself - fortunately by this point, Jaheira has the vampire's attention and since she has the AoP she tanks fine and the ambush has been repelled, though at great cost....

The Damage:
Losing Yoshimo as a character wasn't too bad, as we eventually lose him anyways - losing Anomen hurts though, as I love his turn undead > destroy ability. The real severe losses, however were in equipment:

* Shield of Harmony
* Blade of Roses
* flame tongue
* mace +1
* cloak of non-detection
* ring of human influence
* ring of protection +2

Minsc has put away the Lilacor and donned a +2 shield, and using the Frostweaver, replacing Yoshimo in the line-up. Our biggest need is a cleric, so Zacner II decides he will recruit that drow in the government district after all, think she's still being burned at the stake...

Painful. Would you have done better by letting Anomen have the AoP at the start so he could glug potions to counter damage without danger of level drain?

 Alisa, Half-Elven Jester: Draconis

I've never really found Draconis threatening. Nonetheless, I understand why many players do. Once you have your disabler defense down, enemies need to either fight well ranged or fight well close and force you to get close. Draconis can do both: he has a great breath weapon, and he can get on top of you due to his speed.

Fortunately for the player, he can be deprived of both abilities quickly and he can't really get them back. That can make him an easy kill ultimately.

Against Alisa, Draconis faced an opponent well positioned to trivialize him. But he played his hand unusually well this time, and with the help of a freak occurrence, managed to force Alisa to consume a valuable scroll. Kudos to the Brown One I suppose.

Upon arriving at the lair, Alisa put down a Time Trap stack and then proceed to buff. Unsurprisingly, she worked Protection from Acid into her regiment this time and also layered in a few potions- including Mind Focusing, Invulnerability, Heroism and an Oil of Speed. Aside from that, her regiment was the same as usual.

In SCS, human form Draconis is a poweful caster. He typically opens with Wish->Time Stop->Demon Brigade. He took the same approach this time. Here we see his Wish cast. He went with I wish for my enemies' magical defenses to be utterly destroyed. Alisa, however, had prebuffed with I wish for my enemy's wish to be utterly foiled (AKA: Spell Shield). Alisa got her wish, Draconis didn't.
Image IPB

Draconis's unanswered wish was followed by a Time Stop. Having heard praeses, Alisa took a shot at disrupting via her Magic Flute, but Draconis's magic resistance kept the chant going.
Image IPB

The demons came next, predictably. But Alisa -Tensered with an APR of 8, highly negative saves, and an effective AC in the -20s- had little trouble dispatching them. They were nixed almost as quickly as they were summoned.
Image IPB
Image IPB

Perhaps exasperated, Draconis neglected to refresh his ProMW- granting Alisa an early opportunity to dispel his junk.
Image IPB

He responded well, however: pulling a ProMW Stoneskins Trigger.
Image IPB

Alisa replied by switching to her unenchanted darts- allowing her to quickly cut through his skins. Draconis countered with a timely Absolute Immunity cast. Well played Draconis: you're still going to die, but well played...
Image IPB

Draconis's savvy use of Abjuration school weapon defenses kept him in the action long enough to see off Alisa's SI:D+II That and prior use of Ruby Ray and Spellstrike had earned him an opportunity to get a Breach in potentially, but Alisa hedged against that threat by going Invisibility->Minor Spell Deflection before he could say manos.
Image IPB

With MSD back in place, Alisa was in a  position to safely reveal herself again. She then began a range weapon based assault.
Image IPB

Draconis wisely decided to vanish.Image IPB

But was quickly enticed to break with Mr. Efreeti.
Image IPB

That spelled the end of human form Draconis- giving Alisa the chance to finally meet the real he.
Image IPB

With Draconis running ProMW along with a Breach stopper and Haste, Alisa felt it best to counter his ProMW with one of her own. In retrospect, that may not have been the best move: Alisa still had the movement rate advantage and could certainly have evaded Draconis for four rounds instead- allowing her to reserve the ProMW in her book for emergency use. As it turned out, her early use of ProMW ended up costing her.

A Secret Word from Draconis forced Alisa to re-erect her Breach stopper, MSD. And that pause in movement let Draconis get a Wing Buffet in.
Image IPB

The Wing Buffet, in turn, ended up trapping Alisa creating a potentially dangerous situation. With Draconis running GoI, the emergency Teleport Field scrolls that Alisa keeps in reserve for box-ins would be off little use. And with Alisa's single in book ProMW having already been consummed, she was forced to go the high value scroll route- opting for ProMW which could be expected to induce Draconis to go Invisibility->Retreat thus freeing Alisa. That worked- though you can see she had readied a Time Stop scroll in case Draconis instead chose to stand his grounds.
Image IPB

With her mobility restored, it was time for Alisa to put her traps into play and go for the finish. Draconis had tripped them invisible -a potentially effective move- but a True Sight via scroll revealed him, setting him up for death by Chaos.
Image IPB

Fin.
Image IPB

Alisa will face off with Tamah and Abazigal soon.

Best,

A.

I appreciate your input. However, in this case, I don't see how that would help - Jaheira just would have got level drained dead instead of Anomen, and I do want her more than him. Because of his not so great AC, Anomen may have gotten chunked even with the AoP. Going to get the Mace of Disruption ASAP so we that we can get some level drain immunity for Minsc (IMoD).

Alisa Half-Elven Jester: Abazigal

While Tamah is no longer the threat to my characters that she once was, the Abazigal fight remains one of the more significant hurdles for my Trilogy aspirants. But with Spell Immunity available to lock in Greenstone Amulet based sleep immunity -and UAI granting access to crushing damage resistance items- Alisa was a safe bet for success here. And while I had some residual fears throughout the fight, the only real drama, ultimately, was whether Alisa would prevail without consumming high value resources. Happily she did.

The Plan: Enter running long duration buffs along with Tenser's and Improved Haste. End the drakes first, and then clear out the Frost Salamanders. Before engaging Abazigal, check the inventory and make sure all the mission critical items are on hand, most notably Roranach's Horn, The Defender, and the Greenstone Amulet. Set a Time Trap batch near the hidey-hole, take some potion buffs (Mind Focusing, Heroism, Oil of Speed) and then re-shuffle the inventory with a focus on THACO. Engage Abazigal with the Sling of Seeking equipped and the Wand of the Heavens at the ready- being sure to keep him away from the Time Traps.

Wear down Abazigal at range and then -when he approaches the critical HP level- start layering in the short duration Abjuration spells and potion buffs for the dragon phase. Be sure that Spell Shield, Spell Deflection, SI:A, and the Greenstone Amulet are active in addition to Oil of Speed, Potion of Absorption and some flavor of save buff.

Once Abazigal flips, equip Roranach's and The Defender. That pair when combined with Jan's Armor will grant 95% resistance to Tamah's breath weapon, while the Potion of Absorption will handle Abazigal's. Above all else, be sure that the Greenstone Amulet remains active for defense against Tamah's Sleep. And beyond that, be sure that the Greenstone Amulet charge is protected by SI:A with SI:A, in turn, protected by Spell Shield and Spell Deflection.

Trip the Time Traps at the earliest convenient time -though preferably when neither Abazigal nor Tamah are running ProMW. If Abazigal is vulnerable, forget Tamah and take him down with the Chaos Blade under Improved Haste with the Scarlet Ninja To in the offhand. If Abazigal is under ProMW however -as is likely- drop Tamah instead and then plan to finish Abazigal later- perhaps with the aid of a Time Stop scroll. In either case play it safe -don't take risks- recall that you always have the hidey-hole and a massive scroll collection to fall back on if all else fails.

Execution: The battle went more or less according to plan: Alisa succeeded in finishing Abazigal without resorting to her scroll collection or the hidey-hole. Here's the summary in three phases.

Phase 1: The Drakes and Salamanders

Alisa's buffs kept her cozy-safe against the onslought of drakes. And while they did eat through her Stoneskins at the end, her Tensered HP total of 270 and excellent AC made that a minor concern.
Image IPB

+100% cold resistance took the chill out of ending the sallies.
Image IPB

The traps were set, the potions were quaffed, and the sling was equipped: time for phase 2.

Phase 2: Kensai Abazigal

This was the most tedious portion of the fight and simultaneously the most nerve wracking.

Alisa's un-Tensered THACO remains less than stellar leading to a whole lot of misses. And given Abazigal's missle damage resistance, each hit did little damage even when she managed to land: hence the tedium.
Image IPB

Layering in the buffs -and timing them properly for the flip- was the nerve wracking part.
Image IPB

All went well in the end however. A Wand of the Heavens blast (not this one) ultimately flipped him.
Image IPB

Alisa entered phase 3 buffed and ready.

Phase 3: The Dragons

Here's where things went a touch flooey. Abazigal predictably opened with ProMW amongst other spells.
Image IPB

Unfortunately, I didn't feel confident enough to leave Alisa on the field with both dragons full buffed and the clock running, so I sent Alisa towards the hidey-hole to trip the Time Traps.  That in and of itself wouldn't have been much of a problem, but since Abazigal had tripped the traps ProMW -and Tamah was far to the east- attacking the only vulnerable target would mean placing Alisa between the dragons -and far from the hidey-hole. I wasn't entirely comfortable with that, but I sent Alisa off after Tamah nonetheless. To my chargin, the risk yielded little reward: Alisa's assault on Tamah was foiled by a ProMW: Hit Contingency.
Image IPB

Right. So now Alisa had a whole lot of stopped time and nothing to do with it. Fortunately, Alisa had prepared for this possibility by setting her Time Traps in two distinct though nearby batches- giving her a chance to hit Abazigal with Ruby Ray->Breach and then allow time to resume -letting the spells take effect- before triggering the second batch.
Image IPB

That worked splendidly. Abazigal was stripped, time stopped again, and Alisa was free to finish him.

Fin.
Image IPB

Alisa is now headed back to Amkethran- singing a happy tune.

Well, here we are - The Avatars are back in action.

Our primary task for now was to collect funds to make maximum investment in our new theatre. After much deliberation we finally decided that the loot from Tarnor the Hatchetman's Mercenaries should be the nearest source so we headed to the Temple sewers. First we killed Rakshasa there as we not wish to have an enemy behind our back - Cassia nearly soloed that fight with ease. Then we made some preparations for the mercenaries (I was a bit nervous about them as I had bad experience here in the past) - buffs, Fire Elemental, Aerial Servant, Skellies and Alesia laid two traps (failed to place third). Then Cassia approached them to initiate a dialog and when the situation turned bad rushed back to the main group. Tarnor and Draug Fea rushed after her and were severely injured by Alesia's traps. Pot hit with Death Fog but that was quickly countered by Zone of Sweet Air. While Cassia with summons occupied the fighters, Grond worked with clerics, Pot, BlackStrider and Alesia were engaged in the main villain - the fearsome Gaius. First Pot dispelled his Spell Turning via Piece Magic followed by Spell Thrust and Breach. Gaius answered with Spell Trigger - Spell Deflection, ProMW, Spell Shield. Alesia hit with yet enother Spell Thrust to break Spell Shield and Pot hit with Remove Magic. But being protected with Spell Deflection Gaius has enough time to hit Alesia with ADHW - she ran away from others to save them but took the damage herself (no Protection from Magic Energy prebuff on her - forgetful Yakman...). The last Gaius' contingency was ProMW, Fireshields (Red) (Blue) so Pot and Alesia finished him with old good Magic Missiles. Exciting fight!

@Alesia: Nice work! Here's hoping you can keep it up...
@Serg: SCS Tarnors? Nice defeating them...isn't avatars supposed to be 6 characters? But I only see 5...I must have missed something...

Thanks, Corey. And they are indeed 6, full and well.

Hi Alesia,

I'm not sure I understand the semantics of time traps -- apparently you're able to stack them, cast true sight, but have to wait for ruby rays and breaches to resolve between sets of time traps? Is this the same for time stop?

Zacner II the Half-Elf Conjurer - Update 6 - micro-update
Traveling with: Minsc, Jaheira, Mazzy, Viconia, (Jan)

Since the last update, Mazzy has joined and Jan got kicked out to make room for Imoen. We haven't done everything, saving some things for when Imoen is in the party. Mainly what's left is the Guarded Compound, Planar Sphere, and Windspear Hills.

The fights have been pretty smooth. We forgot to buff when we entered the planar prison - however, most of our initial plays were defensive buffs, and careful play made the team win without any casualty. We didn't clear the entire area, but just worked on finishing this quest and that was a success.

We forged the IMoD, and this weapon has served Minsc very well - Minsc even killed Kangaxx with it. Jan used his sticky fingers to pick us up an extra Gaxx ring - one went to Vacner II to complement his claw of Kazagarath - immune to disease/poison handy for a character with poor saves vs. death - and the other to Minsc, so that Minsc can feasily dual-wield.

The party however is dirt poor (3000 gold), however, we won't be able to buy hardly anything in the Underdark. We may have to skip areas, will have to see...

Micro update; Mayhem and Jaheira recruit Aerie, and Kalah is quickly dealt with.

Agreed. Well done Serg!

Btw. What were my saves when that Wilting hit me? Would I have croaked if I had had a lower roll?

Once True Sight is cast, it's a scripted action which will take place during Time Stop. That said, illusions will not actually be dispelled until time resumes. It works the same way whether time is stopped by a trap or by a spell. Note that as a thief facing a foe running True Sight this is a huge boon: you can fire off a Mislead at the begining of a Time Stop and then backstab away secure in the knowlege that your Mislead will remain safe from True Sight for the duration of the time stoppage.

That of course begs the question: How was Draconis revealed? Alisa set her Time Traps a short distance from each other casuing a fraction of a round to elapse between them. Draconis's invisibility was dispelled during that sliver of time.

As for Breach and Ruby Ray, those act just like any other ranged spell cast during Time Stop. Once they are cast, they will leave the caster's hands and then travel a short distance before freezing. They'll continue travelling after time resumes and take effect once the animation reaches its target. Getting as close to the target as possible reduces travel distance and, therefore, minimizes the amount of time required before the spells take effect. If you look at that screenshot where Alisa is Ruby Raying Abazigal, you'll notice she's standing right in front of Abazigal with the Ruby Ray animation enroute- it has very little distance left to travel before reaching him. To guesstimate the amount of time that elapsed between time stoppages, look to the left behind Alisa's back. You'll see two remaining Time Traps and one of the little knife animations in the air heading towards Abazigal. Now look at the next shot: you'll see no remaining traps and three of the knives heading towards Abazigal- with the lead knife having travelled about 10 feet from it's position during the prior time stoppage. That should give you a sense of how much time passed.

They were 7 vs Spells and you have 79 hp at the moment (with Girdle of Fortitude and Pale Green Ioun Stone). As Gaius is 17lvl Necromancer so yes, I'm very lucky here that he rolled only 6 on damage side and you made a successful roll vs... My first thought back then was to give Alesia my Belt of Inertial Barrier on the fly but we were too far away from each other... Lesson learned.

Ok so even though true sight applies the effect every round, you still managed to dispel Draconis' invisibility because it applied the effect during a previous time stoppage in the fraction of normal time? ie you don't have to line up normal time and true sight ticks?

Zacner II the Half-Elf Conjurer - FINAL Update
Traveling with: Minsc, Mazzy, Jaheira, Viconia, Imoen

The team made it to spellhold and were working on the spellhold trapped statues. No one has fantastic saves, but I can guarantee a save vs. disintegrate for Zacner II if he buffed with blur and improved invisibility, since his save vs. spells was 4. Unfortunately he clicked the wrong one and triggered the cloudkill trap first. He quickly triggered the distingrate and saved - but he got impatient and triggered the last fireball trap and got to about 25% health. He was running out of the cloudkill area effect, but died before could - I could have potioned first, but not sure that would have been enough. Better play would be to withdraw after triggering disintegrate and let someone else trigger the fireball trap. Minsc and Mazzy had huge HP, would be no sweat for them..

No clue on what's next, will have to think about it.

Sad news this morning, Corey... I never trigger those traps by PC. Usually Mazzy or Jaheira buffed with Potion of Invulnerability do that.
