Cathy - halfling swashbuckler (Update 1)

After a quick trip through BG1 Cathy has started the longer road to the Throne.

So far she's survived the dungeon without any particular problems (though she failed to finish off Ulvaryl), restored the circus to normal operation and overseen a change in management at the Copper Coronet.

Currently she's at the Graveyard searching for some headgear to wear.  However, looking at her inventory she's ill-equipped to deal with lots of spiders (only 16 arrows and no area effect potions), so will probably play safe by going back to loot the Promenade before proceeding further.

Anomen / Mazzy / Mayhem (wild mage) / Aerie / Nalia / Jaheira
Jaheira has renounced her harper status. Anomen has lost his sister, and his father too but so far has been convinced not to seek revenge. Aerie has been raised once after a fire elemental summoned by Pai’Na incinerated her and Haz has been killed by Grimwarders. Anomen has fished the mace of disruption out of a blood pool and rescued a man who has been kidnapped and buried alive.

Sir Sarles and Neb are dealt with while Cromwell upgrades the mace of disruption. Jaheira is given a harper pin as we head back to the vampire lair. Anomen (amulet of power and flail of ages) and Mazzy (mace) are foiled by Tanova until Aerie fires in a breach and Mazzy immediately lands a destructive blow.

Lassal has assembled a welcoming committee but the flail and mace are backed up with the arrows +1 from Nalia and dart +3 from Jaheira while Mayhem and Aerie are trying out some minute meteors for the first time. Lassal flees upstairs, only for Anomen and Mazzy to deal with him in the spiked room.

Bodhi is less than impressed and Anomen glugs a couple of potions while we add magic missiles to take care of her, and a crypt king forces Anomen to glug two more potions then we have to resort to our remaining healing spells as his morale breaks (which I can't remember happening before...what is he, uomo or mouse?)

Mazzy takes both the ring of human influence and party leadership from Jaheira and Anomen. We can’t be having mr morale-break wimping out on us again and he needs both ring slots for protection and earth control.

Mayhem exits as she realises breach was a silly idea, leaving Mazzy and Anomen hitting the city gates lich to no avail. Aerie moves in with a remove magic cast just as the lich casts timestop. She exits as a meteor swarm starts. Mazzy and Anomen are protected from fire, fear and evil so stand their ground and as soon as the remove hits so does Mazzy with another destructive blow. A pit fiend is cornered and battered to the ground while PfE keeps the party members safe.

Aran Linvail charters passage to Spellhold for us, but we are not ready (also, dilemma about who to drop for Imoen). Instead we head back to the abandoned temple, despite everybody else having major concerns. Anomen insists on talking to Thaxxy - we have buffed but no starting summons to spice things up.

Mayhem Pierce Magic allows Anomen to critical for 36 with the flail of ages. Aerie has added a breach so switches to Magic Missiles. Jaheira has called up a woodland being then lands a doom. Thaxxy has killed Nalia’s berserk warrior so she fires in a magic missile.

Anomen is buffeted away as three sets of magic missiles land, taking the dragon to badly wounded. Mayhem adds a lower resistance as Aerie fires another magic missile and Nalia is down to an acid arrow. Anomen is returning as Aerie is buffeted away but Thaxxy is looking past summoned insects towards Jaheira. She and Nalia step back from the near-dead dragon as Anomen arrives.

Anomen has to glug two extra healers, Mazzy one. More magic missiles and acid arrows land, then some more. Anomen sees his flail bounce so Mayhem re-breaches and finally Aerie claims the kill.

Mazzy, fighter 10. 57 kills, lich.
Anomen, fighter 7 > cleric 11. 153 kills, bone golem.
Mayhem, wild mage 12. 92 kills, Gellal.
Aerie, cleric 9 / mage 11. 42 kills, Thaxll’ssillyia.
Nalia, thief 4 > mage 12. 32 kills, stone golem.
Jaheira, fighter 9 / druid 12. 149 kills, Del.

Thanks Serg. This has been a fun run so far. In the interest of gettting more challenge out of SoA, I've been restricting Ashanti's use of hit and run tactics. I've also been preventing her from resting mid quest. Both adjustments have unsurprisingly led to an increase in potion use and that had made budgetting decisions more interesting. I'm also considering having her skip most of the chapter 2/3 quest in order to nerf her exp progression. We'll see how it goes.

Anomen and Mazzy have buffed against fire and cold, so the mephits are brushed aside. Two stone golems don’t last long and Rayic Gethras suffers the ignominy of pierce shield / remove magic / breach. He did serve a reminder to buff against the right type of magical fire (& Mazzy's has either run out or been removed).Image IPB

Renal Bloodscalp is given the evidence of treachery and Mae’Var is duly eliminated. Mayhem has enough cash to pay Corneil, promising not to set the city alight (well, too much anyway). We check our licence against Reti and Camitis before souring our reputation (18) so the ferret familar can have two pairs of pantaloons to nestle in.

A haste/slow combo is far too much for the beastmaster and his animals, allowing us to release Hendak. He wants us to deal with another group of slavers so we step into the sewers. Andorian the minotaur is rescued but unable to speak so we leave him where he is.

Anomen is mazed by the shade lich after we fire in a series of dispels (removing his chaotic commands just as the maze is cast). Mayhem casts breach as Jaheira re-applies chaotic commands to Mazzy but the halfing adds another destruction to her tally. Anomen returns after a minute or so.

Tanova and two vampires attack us in the Bridge district so we make full use of our magical licence to deal with them. An elemental lich is next, plenty of buffs and a remove magic proving pointless as Mazzy claims yet another destruction through improved mantle and mirror images.

Kangaxx next (following a brief discussion with Grond0 I opted for a single PfM scroll instead of 6 PfU scrolls or SI’s, worked a treat in this standard-ish game).Image IPB

Quick Note on Ashanti's Game:

I've always felt that in the absence of EXP nerfs the balancing of SoA works out best if you do no more than two or three of the major chapter 2 quests. Trying that again for the first time in years has only confirmed that opinion: doing less is making life more challenging for Ashanti. 

Ashanti is currently finishing up the Bodhi's lair quest. And while I haven't finalized my decision, I'm leaning heavily towards sending her to Spellhold soon after she does.

I'll post again when Ashanti finishes her quest.

That's kind of true: beastmasters can't use many of the game's sought after baubles. But beastmasters are unusually dependant on consumables and that, counter intuitively, can turn them into item hounds. 

Think of it this way. Due to the armor and weapon restrctions, beastmasters end up with a poor AC and a less than optimal APR while also lacking the ability to Slow foes via Ages. That means more time in melee contact while simultaneously being more vulnerable during engagement: healng potions consequently go quick. On top of that, you have to factor in additional consumption of defensive potions due to inability to equip immunity items and, in Ashanti's case, the need for strength potions. Tallying it all up, and the cost of living can get pretty high for a beastmaster. The fact that I'm restricting resting and hit and run tactics this time through makes things even rougher. Ashanti may have little use for, say, Namarra, but she'd sure like to sell it and buy some potions.

Thanks. If I send her off to Spellhold as is she may need it: I'm pretty worried about her resources. I'm feeling semi-tempted to let her do one more quest so she can pick up the Girdle of Hill Giant Strength and fill out her potion collection a bit. We'll see I guess.

Mazzy suggests the remaining time on the PfM scroll is put to good use so we head down into the temple sewers. A small party of beholders and gauth are there so she sets to work but some shadows arrive so she offhands the mace of disruption to prevent level drains. We send in a series of summons to help her - and Mayhem is held with an over-the-horizon (about 3x the field of vision) gaze. Anomen casts remove paralysis and we move back further.

After a minute or two the scroll collapses so Aerie retreats and we feed more summons in, casting improved invisibility on a pair of nymphs. Eventually there are no summons left and Nalia sneaks in to see a lone beholder remaining. Her cloudkill and an Aerie fireball are enough to cleanse the area then Jaheira heals an empathic manifestation so we can speak to an avatar of the temple.

We drop the rift part as Mazzy wants to go shopping. Mazzy purchases the shield of Balduran and the helm of Vhailor - handing Mayhem a stoneskin scroll when the wild mage starts to ask how much those items cost. Mazzy has thought of everything, even remembering to pick up the rift component on our way back.

The feeder pit sees a MMM turn into area silence, affecting Mayhem and Jaheira. The very next spell sees magic missile turn into blue fireshields for Mayhem and a mummy. Two sets of magic missiles are wasted against a ghoul lord - the first from Mayhem surging into invisibility and the second by Aerie unable to be targeted as a result.

There is no lich in the feeder pit today but the large group of undead still look fearsome until Anomen and Aerie make short work of them. We head into the lair of the Unseeing Eye where Mazzy equips the new helm and shield together with Anomen’s armour and magical ring / cloak (bringing her AC to -13). After a brief “Mazzy Attack” she decides to forgo the simmy and clears the remaining stalkies on her own, including the Eye itself. We are about to leave when Anomen announces it is time for his test. Hold on fella.

Gaal joins the Unseeing Eye before Anomen is knighted. Then on to Trademeet and the druid grove - Jaheira besting Faldorn at the first attempt. Polymorph other fails on party members so only 5 of us can get suitable statues, Mazzy having to be herself (there must be something else I could have tried; will have to check).

Couldn't you have just had Anomen pass the Cloak of the Sewers over to Mazzy after he had used it? The troll and jelly forms would have still be available.

Saerileth was honoured to be given Carsomyr after this encounter. A couple of lower magical resistance spells plus removing magical protections was enough to deal with Firkraag though it was well that a good cleric was in the party to raise Minsc afterwards.

I then ran into a bug when I tried to solve the kidnapping of Boo quest. Every time we confronted the boy who had stolen Boo, the game crashed. Anyone know how to solve the problem, or do I just have to avoid doing the quest?

Cathy - halfling swashbuckler (Update 2)

Cathy decided to return to the Promenade to get better equipped before taking on Pai'Na.  On the way she triggered the Suna Seni ambush.  A rare use of the ring of human influence cut the odds against her slightly and the ring of air control let her lead most of the enemies to one end of the area while she returned to deal with the mage - a first use of her detect illusion skill dealt with the mage mirrors and allowed a one-shot attack.

She then used some thieving potions to help her shop before returning to the Graveyard rather better equipped.  Bodhi decided she couldn't trust a thief to desert her comrades (a bit surprising considering the number of other shadow thieves the vampires try to recruitImage IPB), so Cathy continued on to confront Pai'Na.  Her support troops mainly went up in flames, while she failed to complete a spell through a hail of poisoned arrows.

After getting Kitthix as her first summons Cathy also picked up the berserk warrior before setting off for Watcher's Keep.  On the way her summons got a first workout to rescue Renfeld - Kitthix proving decisive by webbing the mage.  Watcher's Keep was lightly defended, so the only need for caution was avoiding close contact with shadow fiends while looting the first floor.

Back in the City Cathy opened up access to the lich in the temple sewers; while there she also took care of a sea troll for Roger.  The City Gates lich, the Shade Lich and the Elemental Lich all died quickly, but Kangaxx was more of a problem when he panicked and Cathy was unable to chase him quickly enough to finish him off.  Eventually her scroll of undead protection ran out and she had to hurriedly run out of the tomb before Kangaxx could imprison her.  With scroll renewed she tried again and this time managed to complete the job, though it again took quite a bit of chasing (using a potion of speed) before she eventually landed the fatal blow.

Cathy watched Sansuki being drained before wielding the rod of terror on some ambushing muggers - that quickly brought her charisma downup to 25 (I made sure there were no remnants of SCS left in the installation before attempting that this time!).

Back at the Temple Sewers Cathy picked up a sweet-smelling cloak - with a little help from her friendly spider.

I am not sure where these thugs are. Billy is about to take us to Smethy but when the area loads, the game crashes. Which area are we meant to be going to?

They are alive and kicking, though it is Minsc who actually threatens to do the kicking. :)

It looks like it is another bug.

Done so, :) and upon going there found another friend request as well. :):)

At the Pocket Plane there is someone else with an identical problem, but that person hasn't had any reply over there other than me saying that I have the same problem. :(

Just wondering if you know how to fix the variables etc. as if I had done the quest so I can finish the game.

In future I'll just avoid Boo being stolen, but can't do that in this game.

EDIT

Have found a saved game before the kidnapping of Boo, I can therefore carry on with the game.
Since it is to avoid a bug, I think that using that saved game is within the spirit of the challenge??

Raissa has been rescued from the skin dancer and the mayor of Trademeet has the mantle of Waukeen. Mayhem is finding it difficult to spot a slacker (so by inference it’s probably her) which means Imoen may be asked not to travel with the party if we can find her (particularly as she is low level single class thief and I’ve done a fair amount of jobs).

Captain Dennis and his gang go down with a fight - Mazzy being immolated. Anomen performs a wondrous recall raise afterwards and we sell their loot for more profit (at least until the next time it is surged away by Mayhem).

Watchers Keep beckons, the first level quickly cleared before Anomen (PfE) and Jaheira (harper pin) clear out a guardian of air. A huge poisonous snake is kept at bay by Mazzy (Gaxx poison immunity) as we kill it. Anomen melees an ice golem then a fire giant. The chromatic demon is up to taking a beating, Mazzy is standing her ground but after a minute or two the demon is only barely wounded despite a malison > doom combo. Nalia adds an emotion and we switch to melee for a serious pounding that it doesn’t survive.Image IPB

Yakman turns out to be Tamorlin, departing without looking back. A party vote sees us follow him (not going any further without a pocket plane rest ability).

Valygar briefly joined to open the Planar Sphere, then made way for Nalia again. We decided to rest at the Copper Coronet before tackling the Sphere, and our usual pre-rest buffs (3 stoneskins and an ironskin) went slightly awry with Mayhem casting her spell first. Her final thought is that the party reputation will take a knock, then she realises the synapses in her brain are operating purely because of electrical overload.

& maybe photobucket will deign to show the screenshot at some point...if not the lightning bolt hit a wall and killed Mayhem before doing the same to some innocent sat having a quiet drink :whistle:

Nice going, Gate! BTW what are your party levels now? My Avatars just cleared the first WK level but I didn't took the risk to fight the statues for now (tried the save with Priest of Helm->Mage preliminarily and loads of gated demons scared me...:blush:
