Mazzy was 13, Anomen cleric 14, Mayhem 13, Aerie 11/11, Nalia 13 and Jaheira 10/12. Back to Candlekeep at some point. (& annoyingly, Sir Anomen had just snaffled Valygar's armour for elemental battles).

Gate, sorry to hear about that electric surge! My hair is standing on end all the way over here. And allow me to express my sympathies for Trog. He may not have been well loved in Athkatla, but I will miss his particular brand of problem-solving. Evil runs seem to be harder, perhaps?

And Alesia, good luck with Ashanti! May her potion case always be full.

Cathy - halfling swashbuckler (Update 3)

Cathy has continued on her fairly untroubled way.

The first outing of the session was to the de'Arnise Hold.  That was easy enough; Cathy still has a few problems in killing trolls in melee due to her relatively poor THAC0, low APR and lack of strength compared to a fighter, but could manage them one-on-one (and has plenty of other options available if necessary).  I'd left the staff of Rhynn behind so had to resort to traps to kill the clay golem (daystar and stealth were sufficient for the iron one).  Torgal was separated from his giant troll guards to make his disposal easy.

On to Trademeet.  The efreeti bottle was grabbed early, but not identified until Cathy levelled up in the troll mound.  The only real problem encountered in the area was when trying to fight a spirit troll in troll form: Cathy's strength was drained so she couldn't move - forcing her to go invisible to regroup.  Belm was picked up, though it's not yet been used (waiting for a second proficiency point in two-weapon fighting).  There was also a slight hiccup when clearing the Trademeet tomb.  On first entering I realised I should have done that under stealth, but after going out and re-entering found the inhabitants had gone outside.  Attacking them there Cathy initially fought the wrong skeleton warrior, so had quite a lot of fodder to deal with by the time the correct one was killed - though Gaxx regeneration was all that was needed to do that.

Is her base THAC0 10 (13 for thief of level 15 + 3 bonus for swash) ,so at that rate she will pass a Fighter at levels above 50.

10+ 4 +(6*5) =(30 +20) or am I out a bit?

The Story of BlackStrider & The Motley Crue (Update #19 - The Windspear Hills):

Before going to the Windspear Hills we made a short side-trip to the Watcher's Keep. Cleared/looted first level (except Statues) - Alesia now has Crimson Dart and that greatly increased her killing score (doubled naturally from previous session), Grond has nice Firetooth Crossbow and we have a wonderful anti-mage summon (Flesh Golem).

In Windspear Hills Cassia ripped lesser foes and proved that Greater Werewolf is much cooler than Greater Wolfwere. Krimlor soloed a vampire's nest under Pro vs Undead scroll (that took a while due to their fast movement, regeneration, good saves vs mace' of disruption instakill effect and Krimlor's constant misses) and Cassia dealt with Guardians under Alesia's Pro vs Fire (last a lot longer than cleric's version). Samia's wasn't that hard since we placed the main forces behind them and sent only quick-footed Cassia to loot the treasure. Tazok hit hard and forced Cassia to drink some healing potions - that was the only notable obstacle.
Conster - we made a heavy buffs (mandatory Prot vs Fire and Magic Energy for both Alesia and Pot; Improved Invisibility for all), left a pack of summons (Aerial Servant, two Fire Elementals, a Nymph) before talk with Firkraag. The fight was flawless - Pot hit with Piece Magic (for Spell Turning)=>Spell Thrust (MGOI)=>Breach (not needed as Nymph held Conster and Fire Elemental smashed him into the ground). All has ended withing three rounds and I think Conster doesn't cast a single spell except his pre-buffs.

Firkraag himself was left alone until later visit and we now intend to make a Planar jump withing the Sphere.

Just wondering if you know how to fix the variables etc. as if I had done the quest so I can finish the game.

In future I'll just avoid Boo being stolen, but can't do that in this game.

snip...

I have tested the quest on a basic install so that you can use it to see what should happen.

You can download the files and screenshots here.

Thanks. I will look at them in due course. Sadly however Grimwald Wyrmslayer is now dead. He completed the Planar quest and whilst awaiting the creation of a new dagger he visited the Twisted Rune. All was going Hunky Dory. All but one enemies were dead when suddenly Grimwald was no more. I assume it was Imprisonment or a Death Spell or something similar. Most frustrating as in seconds the party would have won. He was level 12/ level 13 at the end.

Usually I let the summoned demon kill the lich but positioning was wrong and had to fight fair. :(

However I have had other problems with the installation too. Cromwell wouldn't make items for me other than one item that I didn't want. I did want red dragon armour. With that I might even have won, but you never know.

It's the first time that I have met Edwina. Quite dishy! I was quite tempted to comment on her rack but exerted a bit of self restraint.

Just wondering, is it possible to romance Edwina?

Hard luck Gate. :(

See you in Candlekeep?

Looking good Serg, well played once again.

Condolences Wise. I believe the Twisted Rune mage casts maze in the standard game although that may be beefed up with modded behaviour. I try to keep chaotic commands active for that reason.

Edwina has some nice lines. From memory: Speak to the lech in the Copper Coronet, Salvanas. A couple of party members have comments, believe it is Anomen and Haer'dalis but not certain. A 1 night fling after too much mead would be fun but unfortunately not the case.

I'll be back in Candlekeep once my Fortean jester oversteps his mark.

The mind boggles!

You would have thought that the situation was custom made for Romantic Encounters which IMO should be renamed to Lustful Encounters as there is very little in the way of romance.

FYI Everyone, Corgrunt's run is still going - I haven't posted a few days because I was out of town playing a chess tournament at the Oregon Coast - got a chance to spend some time at the beach which was nice, even won the tourney somehow. Corgrunt will resume his run soon...

Fighter base THAC0 goes down to 0, compared to 8 for a thief - so at level 40 the swashbuckler bonus would equal that.  However, a swashbuckler is limited to 2 stars with a melee weapon, while a fighter could put in 5 (giving them 1 extra off THAC0).  If a swashie could go above L40 then yes they could get a better THAC0 than a fighter.

My impression is that a high-level swashie is a better fighter than a high level fighter anyway in most encounters as THAC0 can get low enough to pretty much hit anything anyway.  Unless they're in an extended encounter where whirlwinds run out the lower AC and damage bonuses of the swashie give them the edge.  If they are in a long encounter they can of course resort to using scrolls & items, traps, stealth etc ...Posted Image

Congratulations!   Did your pawns have dispelling arrows to shoot at the other side? Or maybe a potion of firebreath or two?:D

Thanks but nope to your question. Instead every game I sacrificed material, and the sacrifices destroyed the opposition: (Game 1) Sacrificed a pawn and two knights - the opponent after the game told me he was very confused about the pawn sac (it opened lines) (Game 2) Sacrificed a rook for a knight - it wasn't much of a sacrifice, as really the combo netted me an extra knight and thus the game. (Game 3) Several sacrfices, but the key breakthrough was an initial pawn sacrifice (opened lines) (Game 4) Both bishops were sacrificed, but in reality they were just tactics that won me material back in the end - I had a vicious attack for the whole game, my opponent never got a chance to attack me back.

As for Corgrunt, he's ready to beat up stuff with Minsc in the front-lines, just need some time, possibly tonight but depends on family schedule, we'll see.

Cathy - halfling swashbuckler (Final update)

Grats Gate70 and Grond0 (x2 - for single player success as well). Hope you guys can last a while in Amn (read: no dieing to traps)

If only I'd read your instructions earlier Corey ...

Cathy paid Gaelan Bayle and quickly ran through his tasks on the way to vampire HQ.  The enemies there were attacked using traps or summons / missiles to avoid the danger of level drains.  With only Tanova and a fledgling vampire left on top Cathy sneaked past Tanova to search for the fledgling.  She had just found her when this happened.

I was conscious of the danger of being caught by a spike that far round the edge of the room, but I thought Cathy's 71 HPs would be enough to avoid being one-shotted - wrong again.

Sorry to hear that Grond0 - by the way, I've been doing what Alesia recommended in the spike room (hugging the wall), and just let the enemies come to me, and this has worked well, maybe that would have worked for you too. It's possible it was a critical, or did you have a helmet?

I had a helmet, though I didn't think traps did critical damage anyway. I was hugging the wall all the way round, but that won't necessarily protect you once you get to the north wall.

The Story of BlackStrider & The Motley Crue (Update #20 - The Planar Sphere):

We hired Valygar to get access to the Sphere (Pot traveled to Copper Coronet by himself). While we approached the entrance Sanzuki plead our help vs Del. Her companions were just ordinary Vampires (not the Elder or Ancient as in Windspear Hills) so Krimlor soloed them easily and Sanzuki was saved.
Within the Sphere we used Fire Storm and Cloudkill vs Halflings to disrupt their castings and even though they somehow managed to Dominate Cassia (she ripped our own Aerial Servant and Fire Elemental and then chased her fellow party members) the fight was quite smooth. The duel with Lavok was mostly the lingering exchange of debuffs and right at the moment when he finally hit Krimlor with his first heavy offensive spell (ADHW) Pot stripped his last defences with Breach via scroll and a moment later Lavok surrendered.
Then we cleared the abyssal outskirts of all inhabitants - nice exp burst with not much difficulty (Cassia with Aerial Servant and Fire Elemental tanked great).

Tolgerias, the arch-villian of my previous Priest of Helm=>Mage no-reload run...his demons are in my dreams nightmares still... To prevent him gated them now I loaded the area with Cloudkills disrupting most of his castings and without his Abyssal minions he is just a puppy.

In fire chambers the Effreti was the primary target (due to his ability to became etherial - quite annoying) and after clearing the engine area we are finally back in Athkatla. Alesia now has one more pretty ring (of Acuity) and Higgold once again need our interference in theater affairs.

Thanks, Corey! I'm pretty fond of them all. And while Pot hasn't Spell Immunity in his book at the moment (and therefore often deprived of all his protections) I'm quite confident in their abilities (but still perform a very cautious approach).

And Cassia is the Star!  She is really fierce!

Grond0 wrote...

That may be the case. I always stick to the southern hemisphere so I can't comment on that.

When meeting Lassal, my characters hug the wall moving counter clockwise and then return along the same path. They don't set off traps using that route.

Retrieving the gauntlets, they hug the wall a quarter of the way around and then go straight north. Traps haven't been a problem on that route either though I do make a point of using some means of insuring survival if a trap is unexpectedly tripped. There are a lot of options here with choices depending on class and level. In general, you can take an HP based approach (innate plus item, spell, and potion buff as needed), a resistance based approach (Hardiness, Armor of Faith, The Defender, Adventurewear, Cloak of the Sewers: Rat, Polymorph Self: Mustard Jelly) or an immunity approach (Stoneskins). Mirror Images -including those supplied by Ibratha- can increase the odds but are best not relied on exclusively.

Anyhoo. Best of luck with your next run Grond0!

Best,

A.

Btw. Ashanti is still alive and well. I haven't been playing for the last few days though since my old AC adapter went on the fritz and I've been waiting for  a new one. I'll try to post on Ashanti's BG1 adventures and BG2 encounters up through Bodhi fairly soon.
