Rue, human inquisitor (Grond0) & Murl, human monk (Gate70)
The third incarnations of this pairing have started the second leg of the trilogy.
Early signs have been encouraging as the duo breezed through the dungeon with few problems. The steam mephit in the elemental plane managed to stun Murl twice, but inflicted little damage. The most disappointing aspect was that Murl & Rue both flailed away pretty ineffectively while Ulvaryl killed all 3 assassins, licked her lips and disappeared to digest her meal.
A typical opening sequence in Athkatla took in the Circus and the Copper Coronet before pounding Suna Seni on the way to Watcher's Keep - where the session ended.
Stats (cont. from BG1):
Rue, inquisitor L8, HPs 103 (incl. 5 from Helm), kills 238 (+52)
Murl, monk L9, HPs 68, kills 190 (+71), 2 deaths

Rue, human inquisitor (Grond0) & Murl, human monk (Gate70)
Some good progress yesterday started off at Watcher's Keep. After dealing with a few mephits Murl used the RoAC to get his saving throw down to 4 against the FoD trap - and saved with a 4! The remainder of the goodies were also picked up though Rue wasted a strength potion in the process of doing that - using up one DUHM to see if he could open a container unaided, then using the potion and trying to cast his second DUHM while the first was still active.
Back in the city the next target was the graveyard to get a ioun stone for Murl. Pai'Na's spiders were mainly dealt with by Murl running round them breathing fire - Rue forgave the fact that Murl's speed got him all the way round to catch her in the flames as well! Up top again the duo came across Uncle Lester, but were unable to act fast enough to prevent him punishing his nephew and leaving.
On the way to pay Gaelen Bayle Renfeld was rescued, so there was a second reason to go to the Docks. On arrival the mad cleric managed to survive long enough to hold Murl, but he was already nearly dead so Rue just sent off one more arrow rather than bothering with a dispel. After reporting to Aran (and receiving his gifts) the duo made a neat job of Prebek to get access to the Harper HQ. After finishing there Murl watched in horror as Xzar was cut down and couldn't resist kicking out at Lucette. He managed to stun her, but (possibly fortunately for the game) she was able to recover and give her speech.
After starting Mae'Var the duo moved on to the Docks to rescue a kidnap victim. While there they braved the dangers of a maze trap to get the berserker horn. This time Rue kept her hands firmly in her pockets while waiting for Murl to reappear!
On to the sewers. While waiting for nightfall to get the necklace Mae'Var wanted, the sewers looked an attractive place to visit. Rue had no means to kill a troll, so the first target was the rakshasa (and the kobold commandos accompanying him). Then on to open up the Unseeing Eye quest to get access to the lich there. Back in the Docks Edwin commanded a murderous assault on Rayic's house. The mage's protections were stripped by a dispel and he was quickly cut down.
The next target will be Mae'Var himself.
Stats (cont. from BG1):
Rue, inquisitor L9, HPs 123 (incl. 5 from Helm, 10 from bracers), kills 294 (+56)
Murl, monk L10, HPs 77 (incl. 7 from ioun stone), kills 243 (+53), 2 deaths

Traveling with: Minsc, Jaheira, Anomen, Yoshimo, Nalia
So the team decides to stop the genies from usurping Trademeet's trade by engaging them (buffed before hand) - we attacked the genie with the lamp first, then took out the ones inside - success! Shield of Harmony went to Anomen so he can remove paralysis when needed without being disabled himself.
The enemies in the grove were little trouble...Minsc and Corgrunt pump out massive damage. Nalia soloed the first group of shadow druids with web and cloudkill (each x2). For the 2nd batch Minsc and Anomen silenced the druids - all failed their save! Easy pickings after that...Belm went to Minsc.
One last group of druids, but our skeletons were suitable distractions while the party whaled on them and success. We then buffed Jaheira and she dueled Faldorn - with Nalia's improve invisibility, Faldorn couldn't do much. Jaheira won the duel and Trademeet problems are solved.
I really needed the ammo belt at Watcher's Keep, but I had a hunch I would need the RoR. So we head to the Temple district and enter Mekrath's lair. We take out the mephitis and did an unusual strategy - I had the party engage Mekrath directly - we did have a few buffs on Corgrunt, but our secret weapon was Corgrunt dual-wielding his "excellent" axes (Corgrunt has ***** in axes) - this way no matter if Mekrath did PfMW or PfNW we still were going to put a huge beating on him - yes success, no deaths. For the Yuan-Tis, used summons then attacked once they were out of their mean spells.
Okay, we are ready for Watcher's Keep. I knew the initial battle can be real dangerous, (have had a no-reload end there), so had Pro-Undead on Corgrunt - good thing, as it was a bloody battle - many characters got close to being level drained to nothing, and Jaheira got level drained despite our AoP because something feared her and she dropped the AoP. So had to RoR everyone, rest outside, and re-enter once more...

The rest of the 1st level, however, went much smoother. We didn't actually do the ritual or fight the statues, don't think our team is ready to deal with those problems just yet....We got our ammo belt and the unlimited arrow ammo, golem book and +3 returning dart for Yoshimo, so we are happy with the end result.
Corgrunt's team also took out Mencar Pebblecrusher and his gang. Nalia did most of the work with her mass of area effects (web, emotion, cloudkill, fireball, etc.) but Minsc and Jaheira helped each with an entangle. Mencar's gang never even got a single hit or spell at us.

Rue, human inquisitor (Grond0) & Murl, human monk (Gate70)
Most of the session yesterday went smoothly, though the latter stages were rather hairy. Things started off with a comfortable victory over Mae'Var - his thieves were neutered by true sight and he himself is no problem in vanilla. Then on to take revenge for Mook on Lassal, collect a kidnap ransom and follow-up a Guild Contact. While in the Bridge District we also went to solve the skinner murders.
The next target was a few liches. The cost was 2 protection from undead scrolls, 2 potions of speed (both for Rue as Murl can't use them), 1 storm giant strength and 1 potion of invulnerability (protecting against trap on Bridge District door). That made taking out the Shade Lich, City Gates lich & Elemental Lich simple. We have had problems before with Kangaxx running away scared; he tried that again this time, but our positioning seemed correct to block him in and a final blow from Daystar proved decisive.
Pleased with his new ring, Rue suggested taking on Mencar's gang in order to get an armour upgrade. However, this was where things went rather wrong. The initial aim was to stop Brennan from running away with his ring of invisibility, but he saved twice against Kitthix's web tangle. Then Murl's stealth broke and the attack commenced before the duo were in position. Murl managed to stun Pooky, but Sorcerous Amon targeted Rue with a confusion. She ran and managed to get behind a wall before it took effect, but Kitthix and the berserk warrior fell within seconds to leave everyone attacking Murl. That was unlikely to end well, but Murl was shocked at how quickly his HPs disappeared as both warriors got a good smack in before the mage finished things with a cone of cold. That was actually a blessing in disguise as, with no enemies visible, the mage became the next target.
Rue fortunately stayed stuck against the wall until he regained his senses and sneaked in invisibly to pick up a few things for Murl and go and get him raised at the nearby temple. On their return Brennan was the first target. He attempted to run, but wasn't quite quick enough. That left a pretty easy clean-up operation as the warriors were targeting Rue and made little progress against his lower AC and Gaxx regeneration.
After the problems caused by confusion against Mencar it seemed sensible next to go and pick up Lilarcor for Rue. On arrival at the Copper Coronet they were greeted by Hendak asking impatiently when they would deal with the slavers - the answer to that was immediately after clearing the sewers. One point of interest there was that we realised both characters were immune to the poison trap on the stairs in slaver HQ (Murl from L11 monk immunity and Rue from Gaxx). Normally when we've done that neither of us would be immune, so perhaps Hendak had some reason to be chasing us into action.
Stats (cont. from BG1):
Rue, inquisitor L10, HPs 126 (incl. 5 from Helm, 10 from bracers), kills 345 (+51)
Murl, monk L11, HPs 79 (incl. 7 from ioun stone), kills 290 (+47), 3 deaths

Rue, human inquisitor (Grond0) & Murl, human monk (Gate70)
A short session last night saw further progress in Athkatla for the duo.
Things started at vampire HQ. As Rue was immune to level drain, domination and (via Arbane) to hold the ordinary vampires and greater ghouls were no obstacle. Tanova potentially was, but her buffs were stripped by 3 inquisitor dispels and Murl needed no further invitation to put his kicking boots on. There was a potentially nasty moment when Lassal turned away from Rue to attack Murl - he had to leave the edge of the room slightly to run away, but managed to get back past Rue (who then stopped Lassal in his tracks with a Daystar sunray). Bodhi was a bit more difficult than I expected - Rue missed several times early on and took about 50% damage before Bodhi decided to make a run for it.
After providing a paladin adoption service the duo did the Sir Sarles quest, in order to get some illithium, and went to upgrade the mace of disruption. Aran Linvail got the good news about Bodhi's downfall, but agreed to let Murl & Rue wait a bit longer before going to Spellhold.
Like a true goody-goody Rue was keen to complete the Fallen Paladin quest and added to his good deeds by recovering a relic for the Temple of Lathander (a MP bug in the version of BGT we used to use prevented the latter, so it was nice to be able to do it this time).
Stats (cont. from BG1):
Rue, inquisitor L11, HPs 129 (incl. 5 from Helm, 10 from bracers), kills 364 (+19)
Murl, monk L12, HPs 81 (incl. 7 from ioun stone), kills 316 (+26), 3 deaths

Loqi - gnomish fighter/cleric, controlled by CR (protagonist)
Bait - DECEASED (chunked)
Gum - human level 7 berserker/level 9 thief, controlled by Dog
The duo made some more progress. There weren't a lot of areas left for Chapter two, so the duo finished the trademeet quest without much trouble, we let Cernd duel Faldorn and he won.
We also matched wits against Tarnor's gang. Strategy? 4 skeletons and Ariel servant were to act as distraction, while Gum spammed slience via Namuraa and Loqi cast silence and hold persons - this took almost everyone out of the action except Gaius. The duo ranged, Gum with the boomerang dagger, and Loqi with his trusty sling. Once our summons died, Gum brought up the berserker (via horn) and Genie. Gaius then spent some mean stuff against them (like FoD I think) - then the duo ranged him and he was out of his good stuff by this point and he fell - easy pickings after that. Bait got some nice upgrades here (throwing axe, full plate +1).
In the bridge district, we battled the warehouse party - we tried to kill the mage quickly but we failed and he one-shotted Gum (skull trap? not sure it was an area effect that affected both party members, but Loqi saved), so Loqi had to do all the work. After putting Gum's equipment in a nearby barrel, he rested and raised Gum and she came back and got her stuff and de-trapped the trapped containers in this warehouse.
The team also matched wits with Captain Dennis - we won, but Gum was using heal potions like they were going out of style, maximum buffs including potion buffs were used.
We solved the skinned murders - the battle with the Rune Assassins wasn't too bad, as Loqi was running True Seeing - he had free action too to protect against the ghasts. Some summons were used to assist and success.
The lich in this area was defeated via pro-undead scroll as well. We will battle the lich in the Unseeing Eye area next session,

Dael, human male stalker fresh from Candlekeep. Points of interest in the chateau;
- Some dialogue errors on my part. No xp from Minsc, told the genie to naff off.
- Dropped by the first radiant mephit as it was killed.
- Stunned by the nearby steam mephit which had moved to the door (caught me out).
- Retrieved the sword of chaos under stealth.
- Handed Yoshimo some trinkets to make him leave.
- Tried to open the other doors in the mephit portal room. Locked.
- Drew the mephits away, hid and shut the portals down in safety.
- Backstabbed Ulvaryl, chunked her in 1. Mage landed 2 horrors, a Melf Arrow and chromatic orb.
Now standing at the exit ready to step outside (another day).

Upon further consideration we decided to complete the Stronghold quests before departure to the Spellhold so spent a couple of weeks idle in Five Flagons Inn. Then we completed the limited wish adventure and made some more shopping (Robe of Vecna for Pot, Robe of Good Archmage for Alesia and Vhailor's Helm for Cassia). Finally arrived to the Brynnlaw where we helped Ginia, purified Galvena's guild and engaged Perth the Adept. He refused to be reasonable so fight ensured. We had no means to remove his buffs quickly (especially Spell Trap) so just filled the room with Cloudkills, blocked him so he couldn't escape the area of effect and used Wands of Frost to speed-up the process. Then we tried to test BlackStrider's abilities of persuasion on Pirate King - success. So now we are inside the Spellhold.

Current state:
BlackStrider: Blade(18), 185 kills (Shade Lord);
Alesia The Curious: Mage(12)/Thief(14), 48 kills (Shade Lich); (1 death);
Grond The Pathfinder: Archer(14), 199 kills (Master of Thralls);
Cassia The Furious: Shapeshifter(14), 343 kills (Greater Wolfwere); (1 death);
Krimlor: Fighter(11)/Cleric(12), 261 kills (Kangaxx the Demi-Lich); (1 death);
Pot The Selfless: Mage(15), 42 kills (Koshi); (1 death).

Dael duly loots Watchers Keep (1) and the four liches.
Umar is next, with a Shade Lord defeated then a fake witch eliminated - moon dog figurine collected. The shadow dragon is next; surviving a buffed attack then a rat-form attack. A troll-form attack doesn't work very well and the jelly-form is a terrible idea. Plinkety-plink with Tuigan arrows +1 takes the dragon to near death and a melee attack takes it nearer. A second melee finally does the job.
The temples have a tarnished sculpture and a dawnbringer ring while the paladins have the cup of Anarg back. What is left of Neb merits a decent reward and Dael purchases the helm of Vhailor because he can. Two Dael's are far too much for the vampires guarding Lassal and he is duly staked - Bodhi wisely running away from the real Dael and his improved haste.
Trademeet next - the combination of Corthala armour and inertial barrier is calling.

Dael has lots to do but decides it is time to search for
The wardstone to Spellhold is taken cautiously (moon dog, Kitthix and efreeti) and Imoen is soon retrieved, choosing to abandon Dael and return to the Copper Coronet. Dael picks up a bag of holding, clears the yuan-ti near a huge carved face and slices some umber hulks apart. He iMoD's a lich as it tucks into the rotting bones of an ancient dwarven kensai called Karix and plays hit/run with two greater mummies.

Thanks, Gate! Quite so. SCS keeps in tone though and prevents unnecessary relax...
Even though Dael cleared the Spellhold maze recently it is repopulated again so clean-up operation was on schedule (Imoen was sent to Copper Coronet on her own... again with the pain in my heart...). Nothing special but Yuan-Ti mages are nuisance as usual. Portal Pit Fiend was chunked in first round, Beholder in second and lich fell to Alesia's Cloudkill. Dace last a bit longer and forced Amulet of Power swapping between party members to prevent level drain. Second level was uneventful (aside from Yuan-Ti mage of course with his summoned Efreetis). Tests were passed so now we are out of the Maze on fresh air and preparing for Irenicus.

Kitthix is too fragile to last long against Irenicus. The efreeti lasts long enough in fact to turn all the other inmates hostile. The moon dog is unperturbed though and gives Dael time to dispel against Irenicus before stalking over to land a single hit on Irenicus.

Hack hack slash. Dael gets two silver sword parts from Saemon after killing everybody apart from a gith captain. A slight bug but never mind.
The first part of the sahuagin city cavern is cleared (Sekolah tooth, both fighting pits, cloak of mirroring) and the final group of sahuagin seem easy enough. Dael lets down his guard and trades blows at will. Four or five are down and only two remain, drawn in to melee from the sides.
With the game running at double speed I suddenly realise he's taking a lot of damage and before I can pause the game is over. A lapse on my part, complacently thinking there was no danger against a couple of fishy fighters.
Edit, & it looks like the golden lion figurine is ranger with 20 reputation (pass) and 18 charisma (fail)...
Edit2, nope, it is druid and not a patch on the moon dog.

Rue, human inquisitor (Grond0) & Murl, human monk (Gate70)
The dauntless duo are still going, though yesterday's session was a bit of a trial.
Things opened up gently enough at the De'Arnise Hold. The yuan-ti mage there became the first victim of Murl's quivering palm, while none of the other opponents managed to put up much of a fight. Torgal did successfully resist a number of fire arrows in order to get up from his first nap, but was soon put down again - for good.
On to the Umar Hills. The initial quests there were rattled through on the way to the ruined temple - where a reality check hit. Murl sneaked in to the first major group of undead and confirmed there was no lich there. Buoyed by that discovery, he didn't pay enough attention to hiding and came out of the shadows before Rue had finished buffing round the corner. In the few seconds it took for Rue to get into the room, all the opponents hit Murl and he lay dead. I thought Rue would probably be able to fight them on her own, but a second bone golem came calling and she had to run away for a bit and regenerate. Once healthy again she dispatched the remaining golems and stashed Murl's equipment in a container before making the trip to an (unruined) temple.
Back again Rue took the lead against the second group of undead and they were easily killed. The Shade Lord also went down quickly. He survived an initial sunray, but was destroyed by an iMoD follow-up. Meanwhile Murl wondered briefly why the Altar hadn't collapsed, before quickly switching his ammunition to sunstone bullets and finishing the job.
There were problems again against the Shadow Dragon, who is often a difficult opponent for us. That partly reflects the nature of its attacks, but also that MP tends to run slowly in that area making it difficult to keep out of melee. On this occasion Murl tried using a quivering palm on Thaxy; that had no effect, which worried Murl so much he started running round in terror. Rue did manage to target him with a dispel, but it failed to remove the dragon fear. On her own in melee Rue was no match for Thaxy and soon had to run away, leaving Murl to its tender mercies. Fortunately Thaxy seemed to miss Murl with one breath and a couple of chomps left a visible corpse on the ground (albeit hidden by the dragon's body). Rue retreated into the alcove and mainly used her bow from that point on (she tried regular melee attacks in-between regenerating, but never had much success). That was a long process, as Thaxy decided to use healing when nearly dead the first time, but eventually it was done and she was able to go through the routine of finding a container / finding a temple again.
The session ended with a trip to Trademeet. The genies were killed on arrival and the duo stormed the Troll Mound without incident. The first group of druids has just met their end as well, leaving Kyland Lind first on the agenda for next time.
Stats (cont. from BG1):
Rue, inquisitor L13, HPs 135 (incl. 5 from Helm, 10 from bracers), kills 466 (+102)
Murl, monk L14, HPs 85 (incl. 7 from ioun stone), kills 376 (+60), 5 deaths

Chateau Irenicus was cleared other than the group of mephits near the Sword of Chaos which Chud sneaked past. Ulvaryl got a longsword +1 backstab and a non-proficient bastard sword +1 killed her.
Quayle and Aerie are back at the circus while Valygar is back in his cabin wondering where his armour is and thinking he should have closed the door of the planar sphere before returning.
Lurking until Suna Seni arrives pays dividends and Renfeld benefits in the same manner. A mad cleric is foiled by Arbane as are Prebek and Sanasha. After witnessing Xzar's untimely death Chud uses acid arrows to deal with Rayic Gethras and pay Mae'Var back for his misdemeanours. Roger the fence is back in business too.
Anarg and his fallen paladins are a brief diversion, as is Neb the child killer.
The Dao djinn are sent packing and a few items (crimson dart, ammo belt, quiver of plenty) are picked up from Watchers Keep. Once Chud can afford to meet Aran Linvail he deals with Lassal then diverts to a lich hunt. The Umar troubles lead to Chud becoming a guardian of the community with his own moon dog.
First job for Cerberus is to help deal with a shadow dragon - not much help but Chud wounds it in melee then a wing buffet countered by a dispel of stoneskin and the two combatents are each near death. Chud blinks first, as he casts a minor heal he sees the dragon cast a full heal. Chud has minimal buffs left so shoots away, racing in for a final attack only to see Thaxxy collapse from the first Daystar blow.
Time is called on ownership of the Copper Coronet and captain Haegan is shown the error of his ways. Chud heads to the druid grove, slowly working his way into the troll mound with fire arrows. At this point the game crashes and the thought of having to re-do the trolls is irritating in the extreme.
edit; last save is an equipment drop at Watchers Keep so Chud coughs up for a Copper Coronet flame sword rather than repeatedly switching to his bow.

Rue, human inquisitor (Grond0) & Murl, human monk (Gate70)
The duo are marching on, though the sword of Damocles continues to hover while fighting dragons.
There were no problems finishing off the Trademeet area with Cernd given the task of tearing Faldorn apart. A crash after killing Dalok saw Murl deprived of the XP and kills earned from Kyland Lind to there, but we didn't bother adjusting (as can be seen from the kills at the end Murl more than holds his own now anyway). A tomb clearance sale and a spot of skin grafting saw their reputation soar from 20 to, um, 20.
Murl was complaining about the smell from his backpack so asked to return to the Slums where Valygar's decomposing body was used to grease the lock on the Planar Sphere.
Rue then decided it was about time he upheld the paladin's code of honour and steered a course to Windspear Hills. There was rapid progress through the dungeon there with a group of vampires being decimated by Daystar before various golems reported back to their constructors that they need longer arms to reach attackers. Samia was stunned to see her friends melt away under a monkish assault.
After dealing with Conster Rue reported back to HQ and was sent to stem an invasion in the Umar Hills. That proved a bit tricky as she wasn't actually notified of the assault until all the defending paladins were dead. However, the Order of the Radiant Heart seemed happy enough with the outcome and asked her to act as a bodyguard. It looked as though that would prove problematic as an assassin moved swiftly for the stairs, but fortunately Murl's foot once more proved it's effectiveness. Rue was left with the easy bit of detecting the evil intentions of a disguised assassin before the duo returned to the Windspear dungeon (dropping off some acorns on the way).
The initial stages of the fight with Firkraag went to plan. Murl & Rue were potioned up, but didn't close with the dragon until his remove magic had been tempted out by some attacking summons. A wing buffet gave Firkraag a moment's respite, but Murl was quickly back in and slugging away at the rear took the dragon to badly wounded in quick time. However, there was a heart-stopping moment when Firky took a deep breath - and Murl revealed that he had no fire resistance. Rue chucked him a bottle, but that would probably have been too late to take effect before the breath and even 50% resistance would not necessarily have saved him anyway. However, the breath targeted on the berserk warrior missed Murl by the narrowest of margins.

Even after that escape Murl was not out of trouble as Firkraag now started attacking him and two rapid bites took the monk down to a single HP. Fortunately the dragon then turned to fend off the 2-handed sword poking him from behind, allowing Murl to take a potion and rejoin the conflict. Again taking damage rapidly the dragon duly keeled over before Rue's HPs got to the point of danger.
Stats (cont. from BG1):
Rue, inquisitor L15, HPs 141 (incl. 5 from Helm, 10 from bracers), kills 550 (+84)
Murl, monk L17, HPs 92 (incl. 8 from ioun stone), kills 503 (+127), 5 deaths
