Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (update 8)

An early morning session saw Hardy almost up to his level cap and making progress in the Underdark.

A single time trap saw the end of Perth, allowing Hardy access to Spellhold.  Hardy rejected fireball, wyvern call, stinking cloud and burning hands before settling on the dustbin as his best choice from the book of infinite spells.

He rapidly made his way through Spellhold - the bag of holding being the big prize there, though he also got some spare pairs of boots.  Also picked up his penultimate level there.  A Carsomyr WW finished off Jon before he had time to summon clones or buff (although he took a few seconds to admit his defeat).

The sahuagin didn't seem to be sure whether to treat Hardy as an enemy or not - though things might be clearer now that he's wiped out their royal family.

Going down to the Underdark Hardy cloudkilled some drow before clearing a giant soul gem.  In doing that he wanted to make use of Carsomyr, but found he didn't have it - I guess inventory must have overflowed when the Sahuagin king gave a reward.  Oh well - easy come, easy go.  I realised as a result of that fight though that Hardy had briefly been vulnerable to imprisonment while finishing the lich off.  He needs to be more careful in future - and did that by using cloudkills against Vithal, though the mage dimension doored away and disappeared anyway.  Also at this point Hardy produced a familiar to get a bit of a HP boost.

Stats (cont. from BG1)
Hardy - swashbuckler, L39, 144 HPs (incl. 13 from ioun stone, 12 from familiar), 1,352 kills

Gadzooks, a swashie is stealing a march here. Go Grond0.

Xarik realises he's forgotten something and uses invisibility to add Belm to what is becoming the finest collection of blades in all off his backpack. Aran Linvail pays Saemon Havarian and after a relaxing journey the sights of Brynnlaw hoves into view. That's right, Parisa, Del and Valen. Parisa is destroyed with a single swipe of the mace, the next moment sees Valen destroyed too but Del then saves twice to become the first of many to be Belmed.

A couple of pirates and Chremy take a dislike to Daystar, as does an assassin. The front at the guildhall is fooled for a moment but Xarik decides to silence him anyway. A few guards later the guildmistress and her sidekick are dead, so Xarik makes a couple of trips to the smithy. With sufficient funds raised he decides it is time to demonstrate some dwarven throwering. 3 shots seems a fair effort, now about this blasted book.

True Seeing > Lightning Bolt > Wyvern Call > True Seeing.

Xarik stops momentarily, deciding to see what the previous record with the book involves.

Lightning Bolt > Wyvern call > Lightning Bolt > Lightning Bolt > Lightning Bolt. Burning Hands. Ah well, at least he'll have toilet paper handy if he is mazed or imprisoned.

The Spellhold reception areas are looted before meeting all the guests, then Irenicus drops his disguise and drones on until Xarik nods off. He awakes in a maze, trades insults with Bodhi and suggests Imoen finds somewhere safe to hide.

Bag of Holding > Pulpit > crystal shard > lich. He sits down to toast the memory of Kaxir.

Dace is maced and staked then six umber hulks are diced and sliced. Two different statue games are completed and a portal door emptied before Xarik kills a group of yuan-ti and exits the maze.

The next area sees trolls, minotaurs, yuan-ti, an ulitharid, a djinn prince and golems dealt with before bagging boots of the north and wearing boots of speed. Xaric finally feels at ease, helped by the potion of cloud giant strength he used to open one of the containers.

The calm doesn't last long, an encounter with Bodhi turning ugly - enough for her to flap away. Xaric completes the sanity tests and two-shots Lonk the same before confronting Irenicus. The usual few moments of melee sees Irenicus badly wounded before Xaric moves away and summons Kitthix as Wanev timestops. Irenicus teleports away and Xaric uses mirror images to foil several murderers (and once more Kitthix also survives).

Saemon Havarian comes up with a plan to help him more than help Xaric and numerous pirates join their leader in the throes of death upon his fine ship. Saemon casts off and Xaric finds himself fighting gith before sahuagin scuttle the ship. Xaric looks the sort of person that the sahuagin have been waiting for and accepts the first job that is gifted to him.

Kensai 19. 833 kills, Kangaxx.

Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (update 9)

Hardy has completed 3 bloody areas and entered Ust Natha.

For the beholder lair Hardy started off with a WW on the elder orb, while protected by spell trap from his staff (that seemed to survive the beholder anti-magic effect).  The other elder orb was mainly killed with cloudkills, as were the larger groups in the hive.  Strays were just meleed.

The kuo-toans didn't last long.  A time trap saw the end of the prince just before standard traps could hit him, but the original variety did nearly all the damage to the Demon Knights.

The illithid were able to do nothing to Hardy, unless you count gifting him his final level.

After some drow ambushers teleported into traps, Hardy talked to Adalon and moved on to the drow city.

Stats (cont. from BG1)
Hardy - swashbuckler, L40, 146 HPs (incl. 13 from ioun stone, 12 from familiar), 1,477 kills

Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (update 10)

Hardy has emerged from the Underdark, sent Bodhi packing and arrived at Suldanesselar.

Boz and some would-be ambushers walked into a couple of cloudkills while Hardy was on his way to rescue Phaere.  The remainder of the required tasks (and no others) were done without mistakes and Hardy left the city before anyone realised the matron mother was dead.

Some pre-laid standard traps failed to kill Adalon and his time trap didn't trigger initially - that meant Hardy had to survive a breath attack before retreating to regenerate.  I looked for Firetooth to use that for follow-up attacks, but couldn't find it.  That seemed odd as I really didn't think his inventory was ever full in Ust Natha.  However, he perservered anyway using the other Firetooth (dagger).  There was quite a long game of cat and mouse with Adalon using breath and spells while Hardy jinked in and out using his dagger keeping out of range of the breath attacks.  However, eventually the dragon started moving forward and the second time it was caught in a time trap proved too much for it.

Back in Athkatla Hardy got some items forged and then headed to Bodhi's lair, where the IMoD got a good workout.  Then on to Umar Hills to pick up some new armour.

With his backpack sorted Hardy returned to Watcher's Keep and trashed a couple of statues in order to get Foebane before returning to Elhan for the final stage in his SoA adventures.

Stats (cont. from BG1)
Hardy - swashbuckler, L40, 146 HPs (incl. 13 from ioun stone, 12 from familiar), 1,548 kills

p.s. how are the saving throws now Grond0, will that armour be in regular use.

Xarik dishes out a double regicide in the city of caverns, having grabbed two cloaks, some boots and created some undead sushi in the ampitheatre. He is about to toss one of the two magical ropes down the Underdark well when he notices one already there. Them swashbucklers don't appear to tidy up after themselves...

He finds time to stoneshape a hole on top of a fallen balor before heading west. Beholders and gauth are no match for the shimmering cloak Xarik has picked up, and the five demon knights by a statue of Demogorgon are no match for the dwarven thrower.

A few more kuo-toa are down, then Xaric buffs. A WW > GWW thrower is enough to kill an elder orb and Xaric swaps amulets (his Shield amulet remains unused to date so all 42 charges left). Xaric melees the nearby beholder to the floor and considers his options.

(why do I suspect the dwarf is going to say stuff discretion and go for valour against the other elder orb...)

You just can't resist can you - you should learn to avoid danger (like mePosted Image).

It is, yes.  The MR is also useful (particularly in Carsomyr's absence).

Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (update 11)

There were no problems in Suldanesselar in opening up the Tree of Life.  Nizi wasted his insects on the efreeti and then got caught in a Crom Faeyr time trap.

Moved on to confront Jon and immediately got in trouble when he managed to target Hardy with a maze just as an initial time stop trap wore off.

I searched in my bag of holding for the Flame of the North - to get MR up to 100% - but that seems to be another item that's gone walkabout; fortunately the 90% achieved with a quick potion gulp was sufficient.  After that Hardy ran round throwing the Firetooth dagger until Jon decided he'd had enough.

Hardy - swashbuckler, L40, 146 HPs (incl. 13 from ioun stone, 12 from familiar), 1,590 kills

Close escape there Grond0.

"My name is Xarik...I mean Veldrin...oops". So you want to fight eh?

Careless; although the fight to the eggs and back is easy for Xarik but he'd intended to stock up on potions and grab the Firetooth dagger as a spare ranged weapon.

That's a shame- though I suppose the potions as less essential for a high strength dwarven kensai.

I'd personally miss Firetooth since it is a kensai's best option for ranged disruption of stoneskinned mages, but I'm sure others would happily go without.

Hadn't considered the additional fire damage, that would be nice and disruptive.

Losing 3 each (invulnerability, absorbtion, magic protection and defence) is painful. Magic protection in particular. Will just have to try & do a couple of fights another way to keep the potions in reserve. Also means the +4 halberd wasn't available from Boz but not essential this run.

Xarik has returned to Amn and taken a few more potions from Roger & from the druid grove. He now needs to work out what else that is left should be done. Shopping list will be Crom Faeyr, Wave and Celestial Fury which means other items such as Dragonslayer can be picked up. No need to do the Twisted Rune so might skip that to avoid 2 maze opps.

Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (update 12)

Hardy has seen off Gromnir and is approaching Yaga-Shura's temple, though he has another near-death experience to ponder on.

Completed the Tears tests
- +20% resistance to fire, cold & electricity
- immunity to normal / +1 weapons (killed the beholders here using shield of Balduran and spell trap to protect against the elder orbs).
- +10% MR (though the loss of dexterity is a bit painful)
- +15 HP and Blackrazor sword
- +2 strength

The balors were killed in a time trap before Irenicus was meleed (using spell trap for protection) until he finally agreed to return Hardy's missing soul.

Illasera lasted only moments against a WW and Hardy made his way to the Pocket Plane for the first challenge there.  That was easy, with just a couple of Blackrazor WWs being used to keep HPs high.

In Saradush Hardy blackmailed a priestess to provide a key to the prison. The vampires were no obstacle, but Hardy did get backstabbed once by a thief and used a potion of invisibility for safety.  Also at one point mis-clicked on the slayer change, but recovered his wits before completing it.

In the palace the first group of enemies were cloudkilled from the shadows.  The visibility radius in the throne room was abnormal, but that didn't stop Hardy from successfully hiding and using a cloudkill again.  Gromnir was able to track him down and alert the others, but Hardy used spell trap and ran the fighters round in melee, while cloudkills finished off the mages.  Gromnir was left to last.

Back in the pocket plane Hardy upgraded Foebane before setting out in search of Yaga-Shura.  That took him to the Forest of Mir.  Some opening traps made the Master Wraith and his crew pretty easy, though Hardy did get drained a level by a devil shade when I forgot to switch his amulets over for the undead.  The undead inside the temple proved more of a problem.  I dragged some of them away, but forgot there was a skeleton assassin and his backstab added to skeleton warrior attacks almost killed Hardy when I wasn't paying attention - I suddenly realised here that Hardy only had 8 HPs left, but fortunately he was able to break contact without being attacked again.  He used a potion of invisibility (which put the skeleton warriors off) and ran the assassin round while he regenerated enough to finish it off in melee.

There were no further problems and, after a side trip to Saradush to get his missing level back, Hardy has arrived in the Marching Mountains on Yaga-Shura's trail.

Stats (cont. from BG1)
Hardy - swashbuckler, L40, 159 HPs (incl. 13 from ioun stone, 12 from familiar), 1,751 kills

Xarik has cleared the Umar temple ruins this morning, no real difficulty but took a lot of damage from the greater mummies as he saved buffs for liches.

Grond0, have you got a plan for Melissan - seem to remember you burnt out early last time and had nothing left after the initial confrontation.

There is no need for Xarik to be here :)

Vaxall won't give up but Xarik has ignored him to run Shangalar around the smaller room, and once the thrower shows various protections have expired so does the lich. Revenak is already dead, having tried to interfere.

Vaxall collects the thrower next, then Shyressa only lasts two strikes into a GWW. Layene is baited into a futile timestop and her incendiary cloud is drawn right to the entrance steps so Xarik can melee the pit fiend with a cool head. Once that is down the thrower is used to test and breach the defences of Layene.

That was with a berserker and not having done the fight before.  Hardy has far greater offensive and defensive options and shouldn't really have any trouble if he gets that far.

"What a great lesson that was" thinks Xarik as he backpacks Daystar and  heads out to Windspear. Chieftain DigDag is boomstunned with a Celestial Fury blow and doesn't recover - the dwarf is a trifle overwhelming.

(the next level sees a final pip in katana, THACO drops to -20)

The way to Firkraag is relatively painless, then the entire battle is captured. 50% fire resistance, speak to him first and take the wing buffet as usual. Text order is top two boxes, box on right, bottom 2 boxes.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 25(4) - (10th and final update)
Tensor, human blade (Grond0) & Roche, human blade (Gate70)

A potential objective for today was to get our MP run into ToB at the same time as we both had single player runs there.  Regrettably though it was not to be.

The duet managed to get through the tasks in the drow city without too many problems and returned to Athkatla.  The vampire hideout briefly resembled a steak-house as they moved on to Suldanesselar.  Most of the initial enemies there were despatched before they took a little trip to a dragon's hideout.

Initially Roche was facing Nizi, but his stoneskins and mirrors were battered down and he moved away to rebuff while Tensor found herself with a rare posting in the front line.  I was thinking that she would be able to survive for a while until Roche could recover, but in fact she lasted only a few seconds - just enough time for Nizi to kill her with a single breathPosted Image

Loading a save and checking the effect the breath seemed to be doing about 60-80, with a save for half damage.  Often though the breath seemed to splash and hit twice as in this example from our subsequent testing:
Posted Image

In the run itself Tensor simply died with no explanation on my screen, but Gate70 did briefly note text on his screen confirming that Tensor had been hit twice by the breath and had failed one or both of her saving throws.

So many things we could have done to kill the dragon quickly before it could breathe, e.g. spike traps, time traps, high level scrolls, minor sequencers, contingencies.  Then of course we could have used acid protection, or sent in skeleton warriors on our behalf.  The trouble with having lots of options is the tendency not to use any of themPosted Image.

Sorry for your MP loss, guys... Nizi's breath indeed hurts - in my Avatars run he killed Planetar, Skelli Warrior and two fighters. And he was the first dragon who forced me to think hard whether I like SCSII triple health dragons or I want to uninstall that component in my next run...

& so Xarik plods on, fitting in a planar jaunt in the sphere of necromancy. The direct path is taken and Lavok thanks the dwarf for helping out. Cromwell forges Crom Faeyr and Xarik decides to try it offhand instead of Belm for a while.

The Planar Prison is simple, although the yuan-ti mages and their stoneskins are slow work even with a multitude of GWW's. The warden took two hits and died before he could buff and his yuan-ti refused to turn up until Xaric moved away and returned. The game crashed so the warden got to die a second time - again succumbing before his buffs could activate.
