Bodhi screams for mercy but gets another mace blow instead. Xaric follows up with a stake and does a bit of shopping before heading back to Elhan and from there to Suldanessellar.

Crom Faeyr is used to clear the area of golems & trolls, Xarik is now considering his options around using a single set of buffs for an extended sequence.

Final SoA update
Xaric uses Protection from Magic > Protection from Acid (1) > potion of invulnerability > oil of speed. Starting with a recent grudge, and taking damage because only 1 WW was used at the start and no GWW's.
Posted Image

On to Suneer with buffs still active and without healing. Entered with a GWW and 2 hits killed the mage, remainder of GWW and a 2nd cleared the room.
Posted Image

Ineffective Maze x 2, both cast within a timestop. n.b. the Tree of Life seemed reluctant to grow from the nuts, suspect PfM was obstructing it and I took 5-6 rounds longer than expected just getting to the 2nd and 3rd parasites. Invulnerability and speed had worn off but no point re-buffing as neither were required at this point.
Posted Image

Irenicus. Switched to the Dwarven Thrower to stop fireshield damage until improved mantle expires. A nicely timed critical hit knocks him for 64 and means the plan to return to melee doesn't happen.
Posted Image

Slayer Irenicus. 2nd oil of speed and invulnerability used, plus 5 good tear effects. Killed the balors with ranged thrower and the cornugons with Crom Faeyr. Started on Irenicus with Crom then switched to Thrower when the PfM expired mid battle.
Posted Image

That sort of worked, but would have been better dealing with the dragon properly (earlier approach of Hardiness > II > Mirror > WW > GWW) then resting to use these buffs. Or keeping buffs inactive unless Suneer survived the initial attack, then using them after the 3rd parasite.

Kensai 40. 1510 kills, Bodhi.

Well done Gate - Hardy is looking forward to the next dwarven reunion bash in Saradush.

Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (update 13)

Hardy has seen off Yaga-Shura and survived the second pocket-plane challenge, though I'm still not really happy with the approach used for the latter.

At Yaga-Shura's temple Hardy buffed up before entering.  However, after that fight I decided buffing was unnecessary and he just stood in flames (wearing red dragon scale and ring of fire control) and used foebane to keep HPs up while chewing through attackers.  For the fun of it Berenn was taught the need to make proper sized doors, while Imix was Waved.  I knew there was a maze trap somewhere, but wasn't sure exactly where so progress was a bit nervous.  However, he made it through in the end.

Nyalee died in some traps immediately after extinguishing Yaga-Shura's heart, leaving the way to the Siege Camp open.  On arrival there Hardy went straight for Yaga-Shura with a WW to make him run.  When he returned Hardy found a bit of space to hide and then got Yaga-Shura to chase him on his own.  That should have allowed a routine WW kill, but I forgot again I had equipped a weapon providing extra APR - wrapping attacks round from 10 to 2.  With Yaga at near death - but Hardy down to 38 HPs - he ran a bit and set a trap to finish the giant off.

For the second pocket plane challenge Hardy took some potion buffs initially and then used his helm simulacrum for the first time immediately on entry.  I was hoping that with 2 attackers using WWs Hardy's clone would die quickly, but he seemed to get stuck at near death for a long time and Hardy was forced into running.  While doing that he tried to get the clone blocked by the others momentarily - releasing cloudkills when he had created a bit of space like that.  He also got off the occasional sling shot and eventually the clone keeled over - the others swiftly following.

Stats (cont. from BG1)
Hardy - swashbuckler, L40, 159 HPs (incl. 13 from ioun stone, 12 from familiar), 1,822 kills

Congratulations, Gate! Two steps passed, only one remain - I wish Xarik to stand firmly on his dwarven feet (be careful with Ale!).

And keep it up, Grond0!

The awkward thing about fighting Draconis with a kensai is that you can't use the Shadow Dragon Armor. Potion of magic shielding + protection from acid + shield + oil of speed should still fix him though.

The only thing that concerns me is that your potion of magic shielding supply is probably pretty tight given that you missed out on the three in Ust Natha. Do you have one to spare on Draconis?

No magic shielding, might be oversight. By shield I believe you're thinking amulet, I'd probably go invulnerability instead and get saving throw boost that way.

I have 3 potions of magic protection and 1 PfMagic, believe that was all I could get in my install after missing Ust Natha. 2 acid protection scrolls (think I could have picked more of them up). Hoping I stored potions of absorbtion in Watchers Keep as there are none in the scroll case, and suspect I have a few more scrolls stashed there too.

I'm not certain but think I can easily do 40% magic resistance (amulet, Gaxx, hell trial, Balduran sword). If I can work out another 10% that means I only need 1 potion at a time but the only other item I can think of easily is a 2 handed sword.

I'm not too bothered about Draconis yet, there are enough places to hide to try a plan b, plan c and so on. I'm far more likely to mess up before, or against Abazigal with his buffets and (I think) imprisonment. I would dearly like to get to Melissan though so her three pool guardian groups can be tackled with some interesting equipment for the bottom two, not sure about anything special for the top pool yet.

(why does this feel like my plan is starting to crumble - heh, should be fun)

In vanilla there are three in Roger's inventory and three more in Ust Natha.

As a reminder, in addition to the massive save bonuses they offer 50% resistance to all energy attacks (acid, cold, electricity, fire, and pure magic). Paired with a pro acid scoll, a potion of magic shielding would have granted Karix immunity to Draconis's breath weapon.

By shield I believe you're thinking amulet, I'd probably go invulnerability instead and get saving throw boost that way.

I mentioned the shield amulet because of the magic missle immunity. In my install Draconis is fond of MM.

2 acid protection scrolls (think I could have picked more of them up).

I'm glad to hear you have those at least. They can be life savers against Draconis- especially for a warrior sans Shadow Dragon Armor and magic shielding.

Hoping I stored potions of absorbtion in Watchers Keep as there are none in the scroll case, and suspect I have a few more scrolls stashed there too.

Understood. Fortunately there are a lot of ways of getting electricity resistance. The -10 to crushing AC is nice, but not relevant against the dragons.

Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (update 14)

Hardy is still going, though he needed another slice of luck to make it past Sendai.

At the Oasis he just kept running round picking off opposition with dual-wielded Foebane.  The mages were dealt with late on with a time trap just in case they had any nasty contact spells.

In Amkethran I couldn't resist fighting Vongoethe again.  This time successfully - the lich dying during a second time trap.  He didn't have any decent treasure on him though and I couldn't work out how to open his treasure store, so there was no real gain.

In the smugglers cave picked up some gargoyle boots.  Also spent a while trying to work out how to get in to see Balthazar, until Gate70 pointed out gently that that couldn't be done until some other work had been completed.  So ...

On to Sendai's enclave where a hive mother got a series of WWs.  Some traps were then laid for the woodcutter and his mates.  They killed the captain, but I nearly got caught out against some others as I couldn't believe how easily the drow were hitting against Hardy's AC of -21 - I realised belatedly that was the effect of critical strike HLA.  Hardy had been wearing the Gargoyle boots to protect against backstabs, but switched back to speed at that point and broke contact to hide again.  Once regenerated, he picked the drow off in ones or twos with WWs as necessary (such as with the drow wizards).  That was probably not necessary (as the death of the drow captain had already revealed the enclave), but good practice.

Hardy worked his way through the enclave without any particularly nasty moments.  It amused me to pick off all the drow around Thelyn'ss.  Odamaron died of traps.  Ogremoch got one hefty blow in, but didn't seem to like being drained 16 levels during successive WW attacks!

For the Sendai clones Hardy used his crossbow to avoid touch spells and killed the drow between clones rather than letting them build up - also put on the Gargoyle boots again against potential backstabs.  I thought Sendai herself would be easy enough and didn't bother pre-laying traps.  However, she held Hardy with an implosion that almost killed him.  I tried running him round to regenerate, but the summoned monsters were coming out at too great a rate and true sight prevented him stopping.  So Hardy eventually took the offensive and managed to finish Sendai off with a staff of magi / blackrazor WW.  The remaining monsters were then no threat allowing Hardy to return to the pocket plane to prepare for his next challenge.

Stats (cont. from BG1)
Hardy - swashbuckler, L40, 159 HPs (incl. 13 from ioun stone, 12 from familiar), 2,110 kills

Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (15th and final update)

The third pocket plane challenge put Hardy up against the Slayer.  That was a bit of a mis-match - a few WWs taking care of the business, though it took rather longer to go to Watcher's Keep to get back the 2 levels drained.

Abazigal's Lair was next on the hit list.  Draconis' human form was finished off, but after our last MP experience I suppose I should have used some protection against the dragon form's acid breath!  I relied on the use of a hidey-hole intending to use a time trap to deal with the dragon.  I don't know if I chose the wrong spot to stand - Draconis didn't seem to have a direct line of vision to Hardy, but it didn't prevent him from breathing ... leaving behind yet another charred corpse.

Condolences Grond0.

Nooks and hidey-holes can be helpful against dragons but they are best used as protection from physical attacks. Breath weapons should be foiled with resistances.

Acid resistance is comparatively hard to come by, but UAI rogues have a number of ways of reaching 100%. I usually choose Shadow Dragon Armor + protection from acid (green scroll).

Anyhoo best of luck with your next run (and or your multiplayer game).

@Grond0 - sorry to hear of your demise - guess my Draconis warning should have sent to you instead of Gate70! That was a great run, nevertheless.

Corethief II the level 14 Half-Assassin Update
Traveling with: Yoshimo (dualed to fighter), Korgan, Mazzy, Viconia, Jan
Permanently gone/dead: Minsc, Valygar

Corthief II and gang got a lot done. They have survived all the vampire ambushes, but the last one was extremely dangerous. Both Mazzy and Yoshimo got level drained to level 2. In my install, if someone dies to level drain they are chunked forever, including their equipment. Mazzy at one point had attention of 3 vampires - I was going to run, but thought better of it, and turned off AI and gave her an invis potion - this saved everyone, though 4 party members ended up drained. This experience encouraged Corthief II to get a level-drain immunity for at least one front-liner.

To that end, we did the Temple tasks (except Unseeing Eye, or rather we didn't finish it, though we got the quest), got the Illithium, gave the fake one to Sir Sarles. We then did Aran's tasks up to the last one - Viconia used a haste potion and sanctuary to get the the mace of disruption and Cromwell was happy to upgrade it to the improved mace of disruption +2.

We then battled Tarnor's Gang - or rather, I should say Jan did! Jan did all the work here: web x2, cloudkill, greater malison, emotion, fireball, and another cloudkill. The enemies never even got a shot off.

Then Yoshimo soloed the lich in the sewers and Bridge District with an undead scroll. Time for the main event,Mr. Kangaxx. Yoshimo will use the IMoD and scroll of magic protection and Jan will use thieving potions to get up 205% pick-pocket - yes Jan did get the Gaxx ring from Kangaxx's left hand - Jan ran away while Yoshimo took care of business. Then Yoshimo picked up the Gaxx ring from Kangaxx's right hand. Corthief II will use one of them to get to save vs. spells at 4, while Korgan will use the other to get his save vs. spells to 0. Front-liners AC is -8, pretty decent.

While the PfM scroll was still active, we also ran to Mekrath's Lair so Yoshimo could solo Mekrath easily.

The hostile party in the bridge district was handled via bolts of biting and assassin poisoned arrows on the mage - the rest could not resist the team.

We found evidence on Maevar and then had to battle him and his goons. Interestingly enough, Corthieff II got a lot of backstabs himself here, chunking the thieves. Maevar and pals took snare damage, Korgan enraged and Corthief II backstabbed the cleric - complete victory. Corthief II took control of the thieve's guild.

Karun the Black is badly wounded in the moment it takes to get his buffs activated, but Xarik switches to the battle mage, soldier, Berenna and Gromnir instead. Then back to Karun. Melissan arrives, asking about Eler Had and Xarik couldn't remember if the thief had shown up or not (got a bit carried away with the killing spree).

Cespenar is guarding a huge pile of gear transferred from the Watchers Keep cache while Xarik sells off the less interesting items and picks up one or two bargain scrolls and potions.

The Demon Wraith attacks but Xarik concentrates on his minions, and once they are dead a single thrower GWW deals with him too.

The buffs are still active so on to the super-skeletons. Two warriors are down by the time Xarik loses his mirror images. The cleric and mage are one-shotted and a GWW is wasted when the remaining assassin is also one-shotted. Nyalee directs Xarik to a fire giant temple.

Chinchilla is too fast for Xarik but his three Bhaalfriends are not so lucky, or fast. Five fire giants fall to Crom Faeyr as two burning men are Waved. Xaric is almost out of time today but decides to see how the temple defences are organised.

A group of fire giants are waiting inside, including two elites. Xarik stands his ground for 3 GWW's but the lack of armour class starts to show and he runs around the small area using GWW thrower attacks. As the final enemy collapses Xarik checks his reserves; 9 GWW's and 2 Hardiness' left.

(tempting to see what potions of defence & absorbtion would do here but think I'll stick to a series of smaller battles with rests in between)

Corthief II the level 14 assassin

Corthief II takes on the Twisted Rune Hide-out. It was a bloody battle but Korgan does great. The plan was for Yoshimo to kill the vampire with his Improved Mace of Disruption, but he got killed before he could do that. The vampire requires +3 to hit, and not many of the team could do so, so therefore Viconia did wand of heavens and MMM from Jan - yes, once the vampire goes down, the remaining mage and pit fiend are defeated, though we took lots of damage. The lich was defeated via many snares and poisoned bolts/arrows from Jan and Corthief II. Success!
Posted Image

Time for the Twisted Rune Guarded Compound. The summons were simple enough, lots of buffs on Corthief, including improved invisibility. We attack. The key spell here was chaos and silence, also again the poison from Jan and Corthief II took out the mage quickly. Lots of heal potions gulped, but no deaths. Yoshimo will use the Celestial Fury.

Xarik decides to do the top left area of the fire giant temple first. 4 fire trolls are Crom'd then 2 fire salamanders are Waved. Then he tries the girdle of fire giant strength and a series of thrower GWW's on the fire giants to the right followed by using an unadorned katana against a magic golem and Crom against clay/adamantite variants.

Centre left room next. Wave takes care of a burning man, 3 fire salamanders and a flaming skull (GWW was still active so no urgency to switch). Two fell cats do a reasonable amount of damage despite the next Crom GWW killing them so Xarik PP-rests. Two burning men and two greater fire elementals are Waved and Xarik continues his buffs to the remaining right hand side of the temple area. Both the initial group and subsequent reinforcements fall to either Wave or Crom and Xarik opens up the huge stairwell to access the inner temple.

Two fire giants guarding the stairs are chunked then Xarik considers how to proceed, wary of a maze trap that must be somewhere (think I remember where and also only going to loot minimal containers).

It's over to the left. If you enter through the right passageway and stay on that side of the hall, you'll be fine.

Edit; thanks. I stuck to the bottom and right side then the top to the first heart and back to the right door.

Xarik decides to use the Inertial Barrier belt and hurl the Dwarven Thrower at an unfeasibly rapid rate. 3 fire giants are down before he switches to Berenn who has just cast True Sight. This no doubt helps him see the tail end of a GWW arrive for 42 + 37 + 41 + 40 and a second start for 40 + critical miss + 39 + 2 hits on his dead corpse.

Imix and his two buddies are GWWWaved goodbye before Xaric PP-rests and heads back to the swamp.
Posted Image

Another group of undead are Maced then Nyalee and her guardians are treated to a Celestial Fury attack with Crom Faeyr offhanded (since I'm using GWW Belm is bagged for a while).

Xarik arrives at the siege camp after another PP-rest, casting hardiness as he spots Yaga Shura. His first blow hits and Yaga Shura disappears so Xarik starts his II > Mirror > WW > GWW buffs. Yaga Shura is back almost immediately so Xarik has only just become invisible. He adds mirrors and kills the lieutenant mage, then adds WW before killing the lieutenant cleric and lieutenant fighter.

Xarik runs around for a while but no more lieutentants (thief/assassin) show themselves, and this has given Yaga Shura a few free hits. Xarik fires in a GWW attack with Celestial Fury and Yaga Shura is stunned (he was dying anyway so no real difference).

Sendai has left an "out to lunch" note on her enclave entrance so Xarik clears the outside area and goes to test the Runehammer +4. Vongoethe is duly destroyed, but a fireball claims the life of Marlowe. Xarik hands Malla her soul and a large sum of gold to start her life anew.

Anyway, time for some dwarven revenge, hopefully.

Neither the stalkers or the enemy can do any damage and Xarik has a few buffs in place.
Posted Image

Draconis the dragon is a different matter. After the third remove magic Xarik gives up trying to buff, and hides away to recover after being hit by a dragon breath. Draconis is taunting Xarik, pointing to a melted blob behind the next pillar and asking if he knew Hardy. Bad idea fugly - although it takes a bit of effort to kill enough invisible stalkers to get out again and adopt a different plan of attack.

Xarik uses a series of feints to drag the invisible stalkers around the dragon breath perimiter until Draconis loses patience. Each time a dragon breath is released Xarik moves out of range but the stalkers may not be so lucky. Xarik then uses a GWW to run and attack from one side while Draconis is out of breath, staying until;

a) A wing buffet is used (these sometimes follow quickly after a breath).
B) Draconis causes heavy melee damage (40-50% of hp lost).
c) It looks likely that a wing buffet or dragon breath are imminent.
d) The stalkers look like trapping Xarik in.

10-15 extra healing potions are used during the combat and Xarik uses all 17 GWW's. Draconis has been badly wounded once (healed) and near death once (series of cure serious wounds). Repeated stoneskins and wing buffets mean most GWW's are cut short. Xarik has tried the Dragonslayer sword and the Answerer sword but switched back to Celestial Fury with Belm offhanded after the first half dozen attacks.

Xarik uses a Gaxx improved haste and runs in to one side again. With only two hastes remaining his luck turns just as options b/c/d above converge, strongly suggesting a retreat is called for (and no doubt would have been followed by another stoneskin/heal action to extend the battle further).

Well that was tough, had hoped to not hidey-hole but one use wasn't too bad.
