 Corey_Russell/Dogdancing Multi-player No-Reload
Loqi, gnomish level 16 fighter/level 17 cleric (protagonist)
Gum, Human level 7 berserker > level 23 thief

This session, the duo decided to take advantage of Ribald's special stock. We didn't get much, other than the helm of brilliance and some potions of invulernability for Gum. Gum's saves vs. spells is 2, so this potion can make up the difference.

We also forged a lot of weapons and such from Cromwell. The only one we can't forge that would be nice to have is the Crom Fayre. Ah, I see why we need to make a stop by the Planar Sphere. We also need to get the thunderbolt hammer from the illithid, so we did that first.

We go the Temple Sewers, go into the Illithid hide-out, rest and create some summons. Loqi ordered Gum to use an invulernability potion, as this will make her immune to the illithid psionics. The initial fight with the human fighters/mages and one mind flayer was chaotic, but the duo got the job done.

The next area was much smoother, with our mass of summons leading the way while the duo assisted with their ranged weapons. For the final area, we put chaotic commands on our Deva - she was devastating, unsuprisingly, since one needs +3 weapons to hit her, but the mind flayers weapons only count as +2. The duo did tank at different times we tanked well. The hammer of thunderbolts is now ours.

Next up, we go collect Valygar and let him join us. After he opens the door to the Sphere for us, we kick him out and then begin our adventure here.

Killing the golems in this area very slow, because somewhere down the way, Loqi must have accidentally sold his Staff of Rhynn! Oops...and thanks to cleric's range weapon restrictions, Loqi had to wait many times while Gum used her dart +3 or firetooth dagger +3 on the golems. Sometimes Loqi would cast summons to speed up the kills of the golems.

For the dangerous halfling mages we meet on the bridge of whatever to the golem building room, we had two skeletal warriors lead the way, with the duo assisting with range weapons - this worked out well.

For Lavok, we again had a single skeletal warrior lead the way with the team using their ranged weapons - this got him to surrender. We cleared out the nearby rooms, including a rare use of the horn of blasting.

Time to get us a demon heart! We had two ariel servants leading the way. The enemies here fell quickly. We did fight both demons here, but Loqi's GWW with his sling killed each one quickly. The summons got stunned/held, but Loqi protected Gum with chaotic commands to protect her from the stun (her shield of harmony protects her from the hold effect). The duo then left this demon plane.

Back inside, Loqi got singed a few times, while he tried to unlock the door to the engine room. Our plan for Tolgerias wasn't particularly deep - we just sent in two skeletal warriors first while the duo assisted with their ranged weapons - success once more. Loqi also used Storm of Vengeance to quickly kill the mass of summons Tolgerias and his buddy were summoning.

We ignored the ice room. We switched our equipment around to get maximum fire resistance and charged into the fire room. We had our skeletal warriors assist - yes success!

Last task, the golems in the engine room. We defeated two sets of Stone Golems (x2), Adamantite Golem, and 1 clay golem. While Loqi can assist with the stone golems, he had to stand by while Gum took on the Adamnite Golems. Loqi did cast some summons to try to speed up the kills. Finally, Gum looted the trapped container, Loqi re-energized the engine room and they reported to Lavok. We ended the session here.

Gains: Loqi gained two levels and Gum got THREE!

@ Serg. Good to see the Avatars still making progress.

@ Corey. Impressive stuff - looking forward to hearing about your summons swarming all over Irenicus!

Serg I hope I live to see the Avatars conclusion

Having got so near with the last kensai I decided to experiment with him and the big metal unit. Findings posted here in case it helps others (or me when I eventually crack and roll another dwarsai up).

Sendai died at the 2nd attempt (big metal unit) as previously mentioned.
She also died in the best of 3 (big metal unit plus the big metal rod with scorcher ammunition was awesome). 5 scorches and then run up/down or left/right to scorch the skeletons and spiders.

Can't remember if I covered the slayer pocket plance challenge before but no danger there.
The Favoured of Cyric challenge was a careless reload2 as I tried scorching them. Melee worked.

Balthazar died twice in a row, even after allowing him a special hit that stunned.
The Ravager got reload3 as I used Celestial Fury +3; immune. Just got him on 2nd go.

& on to the Throne.

The staff of air killed the greater air elementals but Yan-C-Bin had to be killed with other weapons.
Melissan added reload4 after the first pool. Had tried to save a hardiness, got her on 2nd go.
2PfCold, Crom Faeyr (Blizzard Trolls), Wave (Frost Salamanders) and Crom Faeyr/Belm gets Cryonax.

Melissan added reload5/6/7 with a timestop and two near-death encounters. Non proficient FoA+3/Crom Faeyr finally works (forgot how good flail was at slowing and disrupting her).

Vorpalled by
No, reload8/9 dire charmed by a succubus or alu fiend. Thrower them > FuryCrom Solar & mariliths.
Melissan adds reload10 after disrupting 2 GWW's. Adding improved invisibility and mirror image is enough to return the favour.

So 10 reloads. Using the FoA (and upping it to +4) should help at the end but I've added the Ravager and Melissan to my list of concerns even if played well. That's just those two and the poxy brown Draconis.

My intention was to only fight one demon, but the 2nd saw my summons (and stunned them!), Gum of course couldn't resist fighting another enemy, but she was taking a beating, so GWW the 2nd it was. I only have 2 GWW so far...

Also Gate70, looking at your results with the BMU, I don't understand why your FoA +3 would be of any use against Melissan - I thought it required +4 weapons/ammo to even injure her?

Good question, I had to load the game up again to check. She's immune to the elemental damage, but once her stoneskins are down she's fair game for the main damage but more importantly is the slow slow slow. From memory the +4 increases the liklihood of slow and +5 makes it a certainty.
Posted Image

With GWW available the +5 would be a fair choice and the first upgrade isn't that far into the Keep.

When I used a different weapon her quicker actions caused more problems, the flail seems to be a good option for a kensai.

FoA +5 doesn't increase the 33% chance of slowing above the +4 (+3 is 25%). The change for the +5 is to provide free action. That's probably a bad idea for a main weapon as it prevents potions of speed, haste, etc, but would be OK if it's just being used tactically.

They woke up from slumber now and all have some kind of *speedy* equipment already so I hope the progress should be a bit more lithesome from now on  I'm definitely not going to abandon them so their adventures will conclude in one way or another. Eventually... .

BTW, FoA is by far my favorite weapon. And I always upgrade it to the max (Free Action effect is not a problem if you equip it after applying speed, haste, etc. Much like Ring of Free Action Krimlor now wearing). So I'm looking forward for your next Karix' clan *Flail Saint* run!

I think this is vanilla behavior, Grond0. I do the same thing quite often in BG 1, what Serg is describing. The important detail is to equip the free action item AFTER haste is already applied and active. You are probably thinking of hasting a character that has free action - a rather redundant action.

Yes: It is.

In vanilla free action prevents further adjustments to movement rate but does not cancel previously applied bonuses. So, for example, equipping boots of speed followed by a ring of free action permits you to enjoy a movement rate bonus and free action simultaneously. This behavior is well known and well documented, and is viewed in different ways by different players. Many players -particularly those with PnP backgrounds- view it as a bug and see taking advantage of it as an exploit. As an example, UserUnfriendly's cheese guide listed it as the first entry under the heading of "Game Engine Exploits". Quoting:

Stacking Free Action with boots of speed, haste and improved haste!

Here is an oldie but goodie...if you equip the ring of free action, or cast the spell on a npc, they are immune to web and hold and stun effects, but you cannot improve haste them, or haste them for combat...but if you improve haste them, or haste them, THEN cast free action or have them equip the ring, they are free AND hasted....

G3 similarly views the vanilla haste/free action behavior as a bug- basing their decision on PnP 2E rules but also the BG in game description. Quoting again (this time from the G3 documentation):

Free Action: Free action is supposed to provide immunity to haste, slow, hold, change in movement rate, entangle, web, and grease effects. It's also supposed to remove any of these effects (and their icons) that are currently active. You'll notice that these files also get patched in other batches to round out their full protections.

In setups with the referenced component installed, activating free action will cancel previously applied haste effects and movement rate bonuses. In this case, equipping a ring of free action will prevent boots of speed from working -irrespective of the order in which they've been equipped.

Not everyone was entirely pleased with this change unsurprisingly. Some players took it upon themselves to undo the G3 fix, opting to restore the vanilla behavior- accepting it as part of BG mechanics irrespective of the PnP 2E rules. Still others composed and released mods that permit free action and movement rate bonuses to be enjoyed simultaneously regardless of order of application. Spellhold Studios, for example, hosts a somewhat ironically entitled mod called PnP Free Action which does the following:

This component ensures Free Action does not cancel or prevent movement bonuses - it only negates penalties such as Hold, Web, Entangle, Grease, stunning, etc. Among other things, this means you can now equip Boots of Speed and the Ring of Free Action to gain the benefits of both, as per PnP descriptions. It also fixes various bugs and inconsistencies related to Free Action, Haste and Slow in both unmodded and modded resources (creatures, items and spells).

According to SHS's stats, this mod has been downloaded over 180,000 times. It's also worth noting that Demivrgyvs went the same direction with IR and SR. With those mods installed, a player can use haste and movement rate bonuses in conjunction with the various forms of free action.

For the record, I prefer the PnP 2E/G3 Fixpack behavior and play that way.

Best,

A.

Corthief II the half-elf assassin - Disaster finally strikes!
Traveling with: Korgan, Mazzy, Jaheira, Viconia, Edwin
Permanently killed/lost: Minsc, Valygar, Jan, Imoen, Yoshimo

Up to this point, this run has been extremely smooth. We did all the "monster" areas in the Underdark without a problem. We assisted the good dragon, but only to buy things we needed from the drow merchants. We also talked to Soulafein so that Boz and his buddies would spawn - Mazzy will use the +4 halberd, I've been grooming her for this. We had the foresight to lay down 7 snares so the enemies died instantly when we zoned in. We left Soulafein waiting, while we then took out Adalon. We did lots of prep, but it didn't matter as the 7 snares killed her instantly. We killed her so that we can make the flesh armor for Viconia.

We then left the Underdark and battling our way was simple enough. We were pretty poor, so only had enough money to forge the Gesen bow for Corthief II. We decided to hit Firkraag's lair to get some more cash. There was indeed, an amazing amount of cash here - we had no trouble in the 2nd area of the lair.

Unfortunately, I was a bit over-confident due to our easy win over Adalon. While I did put down 7 snares again as well as 5 good summons, this initial assault did NOT kill Firkraag, but only got him to badly injured!

I reacted quickly - Corthief II immediately got some distance and put fire resistance on himself. I was pretty sure Firkraag would not last overly long before dieing. Well I was right about that, BUT what I failed to foresee was that Firkraag did a firebreath attack - and it CHUNKED Jan and Imoen! Ow!

Note that all thieves in the game for BG 2 are now permanently lost. In ToB I could dual Sarevok if needed. However, I am a thief myself, so it's not as bad as it could have been. However, losing two mages too is quite a blow.

So we recruit Edwin and Jaheira. Jaheira's quests immediately triggered, but with our current equipment and saves, we did excellent at the Harper Hold and vs. Ployer. We also freed Yoshimo from his geas/curse, as well as reported our success to Garren Windspear.

Sad to hear of your losses, Corey... The more so that both Jan and Imoen could easily protect themselves vs Firky' breath with their Pro vs Fire spell which lasts much much longer then priest' version.
In any case best of luck with the rest of your run!

Twerp - dwarf swashbuckler (update 1)

Twerp managed to complete BG1 while restricted to passive magic only (except that he was allowed to read the tomes).  He will continue with the same restrictions in BG2, i.e. no potions, scrolls, summons etc.  Where an item is both passive and active the passive effect will be allowed, i.e. Twerp could equip Arbane to benefit from hold immunity, but could not use the haste effect.

Here's his character record on arrival in the dungeon.

Corthief II the level 22 half-elf assasin - Planar Sphere, final confrontation with Bodhi
Traveling with: Korgan, Mazzy, Viconia, Jaheira, Edwin
Permanetly lost/killed: Valygar, Minsc, Imoen, Jan, Yoshimo

We want to have Cromwell make the Crom Fayre for Korgan. So we investigate the illithid hide-out in the sewers. Some summons lead the way, but Korgan and Mazzy tanked pretty well, when INT drained they woud just gulp potions of genius - no deaths here. Ok hammer of thunderbolts is now ours! We have Korgan use it in the off-hand giving him 4 attacks per round.

Next was the Planar Sphere. Golems were easy with all our +3 ranged ammo, plus Mazzy's Halberd +4. For enemy mages, we would normally have 1-2 skeletal warriors lead the way, then Korgan and Mazzy give our summons a hand. Honestly, it seemed like Korgan could solo this entire place if he wanted to...

We had two ariel servants helping us in the demon plane. Also, apparently for the first time ever, I killed the 3rd demon (thanks Gate70 for pointing its location). That third demon had a lot of friends, so Viconia and Edwin summoned reinforcements to help. Success!

Tolgerias was no problem at all. We did clear both the ice room and fire room. We are trying to get every scrap of experience we can, so Edwin and Jaheira can try to catch up, so to speak. Golems in engine room were again fairly easy with our +3 ranged ammo and Mazzy's Halberd.

We reported our success to Lavok, and immediately after going outside in the slums Revianne appeared! And she was out for blood, the 5 enemies were all on the little ledge just outside the Planar Sphere door. This apparently was to enemies' disadvantage, as they were destroyed quickly (not that Edwin's chaos helped them any). Edwin now has two wizard rings and his amulet - he can cast an insane # of spells...he definitely makes up for Jan and Imoen's missing spell power. Oh, forgot to mention I had difficulty opening containers, Corthief II's lock picking isn't that good, he'll work on it now that he is the main thief.

We forged the Crom Fayre for Korgan, and decided Bodhi was to be our next target. When we arrived in the Graveyard, Bodhi kidnapped Viconia - hey we need her! The battle with the remaining vampires went badly, Jaheira was killed but she's lucky she wasn't chunked (she was level 1 before her death). After using RoR on Jaheira, we proceeded into Bodhi's lair. In the initial fight were were getting level draiend, so we used our sole lesser restoration scroll on Jaheira. We press deeper, past the vampire crypts and meed Drizzt. The initial battle here by the blood pool went fine, however, Korgan got over-eager and attacked a huge # (8 I think) vampires, but problem was he was winded so he couldn't go berserk and get level drain immunity! Sure enough, he's drained to level 3! And so is Jaheira! They back off, and Mazzy keeps the vampires busy with her Improved Mace of Disruption (not that she has any skill with maces...). Edwin did a chaos and that helped turned the tide.

The party withdrew, fixed our level drains at a temple and purchased 3 scrolls of lesser restoration - we apparently need these things. Korgan was dual-wielding, he went to his axe and shield to be harder to hit. We returned the graveyard, rested and pressed in once more. It was time to confront Bodhi herself. We didn't do many buffs, group haste and improve invisibiilty on Corthief II being the most relevant. We enter and start the battle. Edwin was probably the MVP here - he summoned 4 mordy swords and they turned the tide of battle. Even Corthief II took out a few vampires with his equalizer...

Time to restore Viconia from her vampire condition - we go to Umar Hills Temple and restore her without incident. Edwin about this time wants us to go get his Nether Scroll. So we go to the Graveyard District and get it for him without any trouble. Ran out of time so ended session here.

Twerp - dwarf swashbuckler (update 2)

Twerp made his way successfully through the dungeon.  He wasn't wounded often, and never seriously - with the exception of incautiously opening one chest without properly disarming the trap.  Without any way to quickly damage Ulvaryl I didn't expect to be able to kill her - and was correct.

Restored the circus easily, though at the cost of Quayle's life.

On to the Copper Coronet, where Twerp was soon able to buy the light crossbow of speed and blade of roses at a discount from the grateful new owners.  There was an interesting fight there with Amalas - Twerp successfully managed to lay a trap in the confines of the arena.

Straight on down through the sewers.  Most of that was straightforward, but Twerp should have been more cautious against the otyugh - the continuing damage from its diseased touch took Twerp down to 11 HP.  He was on his way to the temple to get healing, but I'm not sure he would have made it if the damage had kept going a bit longer.

The slavers caused no problems - most of them being lured into traps by stealth attacks.

Off to the graveyard to confront Pai'Na.  Annoyingly the pre-set traps only targeted the druid and not the spiders who appeared fractionally after she went hostile, so Twerp had to do lots of running in and out to kill the spiders (a poison bite would have been fatal to him, so he had to be careful).  To help ensure I didn't make a mistake with my pausing and movement I turned off auto-pause on enemy death.  While in the graveyard I returned a teddy bear and helped a paladin - getting up to level 13 in the process.

Travelling back to the Promenade Twerp triggered the Suna Seni ambush - he used Bhaal horror in conjunction with his traps to deal with that.

Thinking about what's to come I've realised that I've got no way to do the Unseeing Eye quest with my restriction on active magic items (as Twerp has 2xLMD rather than CLW Bhaal powers he can't heal the avatar).  Oh well - I don't think there's anything particularly useful there anyway.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Twerp, swashbuckler L13, 72 HPs (incl. 6 from ioun stone), 381 kills

Quick Note on Ashanti's Game (Final Update):

Sadly, Ashanti's run has ended. It happened in Demon Battle 1 at The Throne. A balor telekinesis ball had pushed Ashanti to the edge of the battlefield. The demons then converged and trapped her. Ashanti tried to break out using her smite, but the knock-back effect didn't kick in- perhaps due to the heavy traffic. She was ultimately finished by power word:stun->melee.
Posted Image

If there is interest in Ashanti's prior ToB battles, I'll make a point of posting on them nonetheless. I'm also considering letting Ashanti play out the rest of her game just to see how she'll handle the battle with Mel and The 5. Again, I can post on this if there is interest.

Anyhoo. Best of luck to the continuing challengers.

Best,

A.

Twerp - dwarf swashbuckler (update 3)

At the Bridge District Twerp recovered the berserker horn - and promptly sold it.  Used large quantities of traps to deal with the Rune Assassins and their creatures to solve the skinner murders.  The reputation gain for that was immediately more than negated by collecting a ransom for a kidnap victim.

A few tasks for the temples started with the Sir Sarles quest - though left Neb for now (backstabs are too much of a threat at the moment).  On to recover Lathander's ring and then spent a while running the Fallen Paladins round (got to level 14 there).

While travelling for Sir Sarles Twerp had rescued Renfeld and he went back to the Docks to deal with Prebek & Sanasha (by going in and out of the house) before clearing out Harper HQ.

Took a trip to Watcher's Keep to buy a potion case and Firetooth.  He investigated inside, where 6 traps only appeared to scratch a pair of vampiric wraiths.  However, after resting and going back inside Twerp found the traps had actually done their job - this has happened to me before, but seems very odd as the vampiric wraiths are immune to the ongoing poison damage from the traps.  The other inhabitants of the top level were no problem and Twerp picked up an ammo container and a case of plenty to keep along with various stuff to sell.

Back in the city Twerp undertook Mae'Var's tasks.  The golems in Rayic's house got him to level 15 - Rayic himself was shot up from the stairs; despite huge numbers of hits his stoneskin remainined unbreached, but the fire damage from Firetooth was eventually too much for him.  Left the final assault on the guild for now in case the thieves get lucky with backstabs.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Twerp, swashbuckler L15, 77 HPs (incl. 7 from ioun stone), 448 kills

Corthief  II the level 24 Half-Elf Assassin - final BG 2 update

@Alesia: Sorry to hear of your demise. Still, being solo and SCS, getting as far as you did is still a great achievement...

So Corthief II and gang make great progress. In fact, we clear absolutely everything except past level 1 of Watcher's Keep.

Time for Suldanessar! We actually didn't use many summons, as we have good anti-golem weapons, plus Korgan is just so good against enemy mages. We did use some for the Rakshashkas though and the Temple. Even the dragon Nizi went pretty well, we did protection from evil 10', group haste and resist plus 5 decent summons (no ToB summons though). Nizi didn't last very long and no one died, though of course with that insect attack lots of heal potions used.
Posted Image

Corey_Russell realized he forgot to purchase two very important items - the other Rod of Resurrection and also the Robe of Vecna. So he leaves the elven city and then returns to deal with Irenicus.

For the Tree of Life fight we didn't have many buffs, but they were unnecessary as Corthief II's 1 spike trap and 5 snares were enough to kill Irenicus instantly.

As for Hell, we spared the dragon. The beholders did a problem though - they imprisoned Mazzy! And no, Edwin doesn't know freedom but he can't cast level 9 spells anyways. Missing herself is not a big deal really, as that opens up a spot for Sarevok. But what IS a big deal is she had several very good pieces of equipment that we wished we had back:
* Cloak of Mirroring
* Red dragon armor
* fire resistance ring
* Melium gauntlets
* haste boots

The quest must continue though. For the next trial, the demon tried to hold Viconia but her MR (75%) resisted it! But I didn't know which door she should walk back with, and chose the right door and she died - oops. Well RoR got her back to speed...

For the Genie, we killed him for the Blackrazor. I'm an assassin, what do I care if my alignment changes to evil? The sword was immediately equipped.

And for the last one, Sarevok was pretty easy with Ariel Servant/Air Elemental who can't be damaged by Sarevok's weapon...

Time for the Battle Royale. As is my usual tactic, I had a single summon in the center to draw out Irenicus death spell, with 2 arieal servants and 2 fire elementals (druidic) far away, who came and helped once the battle started, this way only one summon dies.

Once the battle starts, Jaheira takes a lot of damage, and Korgan has a single WW to use. Corthief II decided the best way he can help his team is, to well, assassinate! So he uses invis from Gaxx ring and invis potion to backstab two different demons, who quickly fall with those 70 pt. backstabs.

Time for Jon boy himself. Korgan's enrage wears off and he gets mazed. We refresh our summons, including a Fallen Deva, and everyone range attacks with Jaheira tanking (keep in mind she very under-leveled as she joined the team very late). It was taking too long, so Corthief II did a 66 pt backstab on Jon Boy, and he fell shortly there-after - we are on to Throne of Bhaal!

I realized I made one blunder - I never finished the Unseeing Eye quest, so we never got the DEX gauntlets! Oops, Korgan/Anomen/Keldorn all could use it. Just have to adapt I guess. As stated earlier, Sarevok will fill our last slot.

@Alesia: Sad to hear that Ashanti's impressive run has ended in such gruesome manner... She will be missed... We all will remember her fondly.
And yes, I'm definitely interesting to see how she fared in prior Throne major fights.

@Corey: Congratulations! Try not to lose the remaining NPCs in ToB - there are plenty of opportunities for that there...
