It's dangerous being a buddy to Corthief II (do you choose to be chunked, fireball-chunked, imprisoned or let out to play without the correct gauntlets), still the end justifies the means. Edit, just seen the Viconia hell door comment, hilarious and no doubt she's painted L and R on his boots.

Alesia, with you being so close I'd be interested in seeing how Ashanti fares. Hopefully better than I did but appreciate the alternate ending changes matters substantially.

Sorry to hear that Alesia - I was counting on you to reduce the list of classes that haven't got past Mel!

That's right: We still haven't seen a ranger make it, have we?

That's not for lack of ability in my estimation though: rangers are well suited to no reload play, I believe.

I would certainly be interested in Ashanti's capacity to finish things off.

I'm curious as well- though I don't expect it to be a problem, really. It may require infinite patience and she may have a narrow margin for error, but I definitely think Ashanti is capable of taking down Mel. We'll just have to see I guess.

@Alesia: Sorry to hear of your demise. Still, being solo and SCS, getting as far as you did is still a great achievement...

That's kind of you to say. And for the record, I'm not disappointed with the outcome. I'm not particularly pleased with it either, however. Ashanti met my expectations- neither exceeding them nor falling short.

Sure. Ashanti was solo. And she was a beastmaster. And she was facing a whole lot of ugly. But none of those things -together or in isolation- precluded success. Ashanti the character could have made it in theory. There was only one thing that held her back: me.

I'm not saying that as a self critique- more a statement of fact.  I haven't to date done the research necessary to safely pilot a beastmaster through the endgame: I've actually never even attempted to solo the SCS-Ascension battle with a warrior of any kind. The odds of me getting it right on a first try with Ashanti were pretty low.

(Btw. Congrats on finishing SoA Corey!)

And yes, I'm definitely interesting to see how she fared in prior Throne major fights.

Ok. So that makes one vote to see the endgame, and one vote to see her ToB battles. Noted.

Two votes to see the endgame.

So here's the plan. I'll try to finish up Ashanti's game this afternoon. If and when she succeeds, I'll post on all her major ToB battles.

Best,

A.

Btw. Ashanti has just completed the demon battles. They required one additional reload.

Both deaths were caused by failures of threat identification. In the first case, I had underestimated the danger posed by telekinesis. In the second case, it was the backstabbing babaus that I overlooked. Making the balors and babaus priority targets and insuring that hardiness was in place while the babaus were on the field solved the problems.

Twerp - dwarf swashbuckler (update 4)

Twerp is moving on strongly and looking forward to getting HLAs - just the one near-death experience so far.

Travelling to the de'Arnise Hold Twerp had to do lots of running round to see off an orog ambush.  The trolls at the Hold proved no problem, but the clay golem saw Twerp's closest shave so far - he was unable to break contact with the hasted golem and only belated trap damage saved him.  Given that a bad experience is the best teacher it was no surprise that the golems got him to level 16.

Off to Umar Hills where a few preliminary tasks were enough to get Twerp to level 17 before he moved on to the ruined temple.  Most things there were meleed (off-handing Arbane protected against shadow fiends, while the bone golems were stealth attacked).  There were no liches, but the groups of undead headed by greater mummies caught a few traps - Twerp got to level 18 there.

Thaxy seemed heedless of danger even after picking up an opening critical and found himself in a trap.  I decided to leave the Shade Lord alone for now, as Twerp would currently have no chance of killing him before his buffs fired and he started pumping out dangerous spells.

After forging and equipping the shadow dragon armour Trademeet was next on the list.  A selection of traps there quickly ended the genies' tyranny as Twerp moved on to the Druid Grove.  Clearing the troll mound got Twerp to level 19.  Traps and Bhaal horror accounted for the groups of druids, while traps also stopped the rakshasas in their tracks (the periapt of proof against poison being a major gain there).  After watching Cernd wipe the floor with Faldorn, Twerp returned to Trademeet and cleared the tomb.  He also killed the skin dancers, but with scrolls prohibited he had no way to save Raissa.

The last of the external areas currently available was Windspear Hills and Twerp found his way there next.  Returning some acorns got him to level 20 before he entered the dungeon.  Doing the vampires safely took a while because they move around quite a bit and Twerp has no protection against level drain.  However, they were eventually all trapped and Twerp moved swiftly on.  Some more golems and werewolves brought up level 21 and ambushing the ambushers level 22.  With Twerp now over 90 HPs at least the significant danger from PW:stun has reduced.  To round things off in the area both Conster and Firkraag failed to survive initial trap damage.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Twerp, swashbuckler L22, 92 HPs (incl. 8 from ioun stone), 727 kills

Corthief II the level 25 Half-Elf Assassin - Initial adventures in Throne of Bhaal
Traveling with: Korgan,Sarevok, Jaheira, Viconia, Edwin
Permanently lost/killed: Valygar, Minsc, Jan, Imoen, Mazzy

For Illsaera, we laid down a few snares, some summons - our team handled her well, and a pierce shield by Edwin really hurt her. Corthief took the opportunity to backstab some of her cohorts, while Korgan was messing with her.

Next up was Saradush. The initial fight on entering it was very helpful - a level for Corthief II. He used it for UAI and took the helm of brilliance from Korgan - it would be embarrassing for Corthief to die to the random fireballs that arrive in the city. Corthief II also equipped the paladin bracers. The rest of the quests/minor battles were unremarkable.

Okay, time to get into Gromnir Castle. The Temple Priestess didn't trust me, so can't directly through the jail. Then I looked for some courtesans, but none were to be found, time for plan C. We crashed the barracks - Edwin's emotion was quite powerful, and the enemies never got a chance to summon their usual reinforcements. We used the sewer key to try to get to the castle from there. Lots of battles in the sewers, but poor Jaheira, her being under-leveled sure bites her - she died a few times in the sewers and in Gromnir's Castle too.

I usually use AI and control just Corthief II, except when I need specific spells, such as pierce shield or horrid wilting. And of course enrage for Korgan. For the group that guards to the door to Gromnir's Castle, we used AI and Corthief II did a few backstabs to clear things up. We buff up what we can and enter Gromnir's level.

Korgan does Whirlwind (he doesn't even know Greater Whirlwind yet), Edwin does horrid wilting on the enemy mages, Viconia casts a fallen deva to distract enemy mages, and Jaheira gulps extra healing potions until Gromnir kills her. Meanwhile, Corthief keep popping invis potions and backstabbing Gromnir - Gromnir was taking huge damage and died shortly after he slew Jaheira. Only a singe mage left and yet again a pierce shield from Edwin ended the enemy mage's resistance.

We return to our plane and craft a few items. I would like someone to use the Foe Bane, but no one has any skill with bastard swords, will probably have Korgan do so next chance I get. Exploring the wilderness area on the path to the old Bhaal Temple will be our next target.

Twerp - dwarf swashbuckler (update 5)

Twerp got the red dragon armour made and then tracked Valygar down in Umar Hills - his body opened up the Planar Sphere.  Twerp didn't venture into the sphere proper, but trapping a clay golem in the antechamber got him to level 23.

In the temple sewers he smacked down Roger's troll and the rakshasa before having a go at Tarnor.  Some back-up traps were laid, but all the important work was done with stealth shots from Firetooth.  In the illithid lair lots more stealth shots were used to clean out the first room, which took a while.  The second room was far faster - 5 traps were placed behind the door before Twerp opened it killing all but one illithid.  A similar approach, though with more melee mixed in, finished off the final room - getting Twerp to level 24 and his first HLA.  Mekrath and the yuan-ti were more stealth shot / trap victims.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Twerp, swashbuckler L24, 96 HPs (incl. 8 from ioun stone), 803 kills

Hmm, I just now belated realize that Mazzy took a very important item with her when she got imprisoned - she took the improved mace of disruption with her. That might be an issue with the level drains at the ToB Throne battles and not being able to rest - guess I will just have to either adapt or die, as they say.

@Corey: there is a Runehammer +5 (you'll not miss it - Yaga Shura and Woodcutter's cabin, outside of Sendai's Enclave are en-route the main plot) which could easily replace the Mace of Disruption and even better.

Other NPP options are Spectral Brand and Angurvadal but they are off-plot. I thought you had a vanilla install, only a couple of level drainers at the end with that and they are easy to pick off (edit, although I'm not sure if the slayer shadows drain - didn't notice it with my kensai but maybe they just didn't hit or were ineffective due to +1 or less weapons).

They indeed drain. Don't know if immunity to +1 or less weapons will stop that though - they were the ones who dropped  my cleric-illusionist...

The level drainers I'm pretty sure occur at the pool battle at the left, which is the pool I usually start with. I am a vanilla install.

I had forgotten about the warhammer, that helps a little, but that still means 2/3 the party can be drained.

Seeing as I have saves before each part of the ToB battle with the last kensai I loaded that one up. There are 2 vampiric wraiths, 2 greater air elementals and Yan-C-Bin. I killed the elementals and Yan then gave the wraiths a fair time to strut their stuff.

Their attacks, and therefore the level drain, are ineffective. So the immune to +1 or less weapons tear of Bhaal will work, as would the Aslyferund armour. PfMW might be an option. By the time your party are there I'd have thought you could get the wraiths fairly quickly and there are likely to be other options to present them with (planetar... deva...)

Hope that helps

edit, Viconia can turn them - Melissan then wasted an action with "Undead things begone".

No, because he is the one who will be using Yaga's Warhammer. Still, If Gate70 is right that being immune to +1 weapons prevents level drain, then only 1/2 the party is exposed.

EDIT: I prefer destroying undead instead of making them join us, but maybe I should do that, have Viconia turn - don't think that would have an effect on the slayer shadows though.

Tired now. Feet hurt. Mel can die tomorrow.

Corthief the level 27 half-elf assassin continues his adventure - dealing with Yaga-Shura
Traveling with: Korgan, Sarevok, Jaheira, Viconia, Edwin

We pay the North Forest a visit - lots of Yaga Shura soldiers here, but they are all slain rather simply.

Next up was the large group of undead guarding Nylee's Temple - for safety, Cothief II used pro undead scroll here - good thing he did that actually, as Sarevok and Korgan got level-drained a lot,and Viconia killed. She was brought back to speed with Rod of Resurrection, and we pressed into the temple, wiping out some more powerful undead then talked to Nylee. She said she could help us remove Yaga's invincibility but she needs his and her hearts from his temple. Got it.

So we go to Marching Mountains and battle the giants here. Sarevok in particular taking massive damage, but no one got chunked. Big thanks to Serg - I used his tip of arcane pro fire spell on everyone - this saved deaths AND likely prevented chunkings, as Corthief II set off a lot of traps accidentally while we were here.

We enter the temple and do the big battle with the large numbers of giants. Korgan and Sarevok using hardiness, Edwin doing wilting, and Corthief II hiding in shadows, backstabs and repeats - the giants are defeated with no deaths. Escorted by summons, the team wipes out the large number of enemies here. Thanks primarily to our fire protection, no one died. One scary moment was when Corthief II accidentally set off a trap - looked like a save or die type trap - he made it, but not happy that I needed luck.

For the next area, we pulled the giants to the small opening they can't get through and attacked from range. Then we got the hearts we needed. We also battled Imix and his friends. He managed to fear two party members, but it was irrelevant, as the rest of the party destroyed him - Corthief II's backstabs weren't helping him any either. The amulet was welcome upgrade for Corthief II.

Time to deal with Nylee. When we were last here, Corthief II had already laid down some snares and spike traps - they destroyed Nylee instantly when she went hostile - the team and summons were eventually able to take out the remaining shambling mounds.

We then buy anything we might want from Saredush, rest and go to Yaga's Siege Camp. We open with our 5 best summons, group haste, hardiness, and of course Corthief II is stealthed. We then press forward. For the most part, I let the party AI handle most of the stuff here, except Jaheira did plague of insects and call lightning and Horrid Wilting from Edwin. Cothief II, on the on the other hand, concentrated his attacks on Yaga-Shura. We had some difficulty as Yaga was so far away and behind some structures. Only Korgan was nearby, but more and more enemies were being spawned so the party AI not quite working - not only that, Viconia and Jaheira are dead. Finally I turn off AI and set everyone still alive to directly attack Yaga-Shura. Corthief II does his Gaxx haste and attacks Yaga and Korgan uses his Greater Whirlwind and attacks Yaga - yes finally success!

Our money is pretty toast at this point, but Oasis will soon change that. We rest and prepare to do the 2nd challenge and travel to Amkethran.

Twerp - dwarf swashbuckler (update 6)

Twerp has finished his current round of equipment collection and will make progress with the main quest next time.

The session started with the Unseeing Eye quest.  With no healing ability I don't think it's possible to progress the quest too far, but a group of beholders attacked using stealth shots and a few back-up traps got him up to level 25.

Followed Haer'Dalis to the Planar Prison.  Hiding before entering it allowed Twerp to trap the first mage and his newly learned WW killed 3 others.  The thief successfully backstabbed him, but too late to change the result of the battle.  I was cautious in making progress (stealth shots and traps) and the only additional times when Twerp was attacked were by the demons who could see through his stealth - a vampiric touch by the Master of Thralls and a PW:stun by the Warden both proving pretty ineffective before they walked into traps.  There was one interesting moment when a wyvern followed to where he thought a stealthed Twerp was heading - looks like a long way to fall there.  Finishing off the yuan-ti mages after the Warden got Twerp to level 26.

Twerp considered what other resources he might want.  He bought the Defender of Easthaven and Scarlet Ninja-jo and then killed Jan for his armour (don't think I've tried using that before, but it might be helpful somewhere); also bought the bracers of AC3 as a companion to the armour.

A Carsomyr WW persuaded the City Gates lich to hand over Daystar and the Rod of Terror.  The Rod was put to use at Windspear to give Twerp a properly godlike charisma.  A quick return trip to Watcher's Keep saw various statues destroyed to get Foebane and Usono's Blade (also level 27).

I decided then to also have a go at the Ring of Gaxx.  The Shade Lich and Elemental Lich died in pre-laid traps, but I allowed Kangaxx's lich form to survive until it chased Twerp to the stairs.  He then used Daystar to kill it, running upstairs to avoid any spells.  When the demi-lich form turned up Twerp used a Daystar WW on it.  That hit 3 times, but without any spell disruption, and I cautiously ran away as I wasn't sure how long imprisonment took to cast.  Coming back again, 2 attacks from a second WW were enough to finish the job.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Twerp, swashbuckler L27, 104 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 903 kills

IIRC the slayer shadows have +2 or higher weapons, but the level drain effect offers a save v death at -2. I'm guessing Karix would have made the save hence no level drain. Some of Corthief's companions may be able to use that angle as well. Viconia won't be able to turn them however: they're demonic, I believe.

As a reminder, devas and planetars are immune to level drain (as are high level familiars, interestingly enough, though I wouldn't recommend sending you fairy dragon after slayer shadows). Item based options are, as has been mentioned, AoP, iMod, Runehammer, Angurvadal, and Spectral Brand. Korgan's enrage will work -as would barabarian rage- and if Viconia suddenly saw the light, boon of lathander would work for her as well. Slayer change and avoid death also confer level drain immunity. And while the cleric spell NPP is only marginally useful due to its short duration and single target, limited wish: I wish to be protected from undead can be helpful; the duration is brief, but it at least covers the entire party.

Have fun slaying slayer shadows Corey!

Best,

A.

Twerp - dwarf swashbuckler (update 7)

Twerp is motoring along now on the main quest and it won't take him long to get to ToB at this rate.

Paid Gaelan Bayle (level 28 and first time trap).  Used the +2 ring from Aran Linvail to replace the Claw of Kazgoroth - taking death saves nicely into minus territory.

Aran's tasks were swiftly completed.  By now most things were simply meleed using dual-wielding, though Tanova picked up a couple of Daystar WWs (first being interrupted by PFMW) - Twerp got level 29 there.  Bodhi failed to survive a single Daystar WW.

Didn't bother upgrading the MoD, but just took ship for Brynnlaw.  On arrival there some more vampires and Perth were brushed aside as Twerp headed for Spellhold.  Out of interest he checked the book of infinite spells and discovered it didn't have spell turning in anyway, so his restrictions on active magic are no great loss there.

In Spellhold the experience of being captured got Twerp to level 30.  Smacking down the inhabitants up to thelich got him to level 31 and those up to Bodhi to level 32.  A Carsomyr WW did enough damage to deal with Irenicus, though as usual it took him a little time to realise it (level 33).

Minutes later Twerp was boarding a ship and soon ended up as a guest of the Sahuagin.  Killing the king got him to level 34 before he balanced things up by killing the prince as well.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Twerp, swashbuckler L34, 113 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 1,146 kills

Corthief II the level 28 half-elf assassin - Oasis, Amkethran, Sendai's Lair (Surface)
Traveling with: Sarevok, Korgan, Jaheira, Viconia, Edwin

I noticed something troubling - the game says my save vs. spells is 5 - but when I go to my info page, it says my items only give -2 vs. spells. But I have the Claw of Kazagaroth and Gaxx ring, it should be -5. Tonight, I will try to have the WK Temple lady, remove the curse and re-equip the claw to see if I get my save vs.spells where they should be.

Our first stop this session was the Oasis. While some spells were cast, it was mostly melee here. Corthief II didn't backstab much as the enemies were falling so fast. He did however, equip the Answerer, a nice long sword. Looting took a while, as usual. Corthief II's lore is excellent, he can identify almost anything just by looking at it.

We didn't do much in Amkethran. For the first time ever, we did forge the Nymph's Ring for Jaheira - I finally found where the nymph's tears were, which is why I couldn't forge it before. An extra 6th and 7th level spells is well worth it. We rescued the priest from the belligerent monk, but that simple enough. We rescued Saemon too, not that we wanted to, but that was simple as well. We didn't interfere with the smuggling operations, and we didn't bother messing with Van Goethe either. And nor can we forge the BMU. Thus, it's on to Sendai's Enclave!

Since we do want the experience, we talked to the "woodsman" and then went where he said - the team handled these threats well - I let Sarevok use the Shield of Balduran, since Korgan's saves should protect him pretty well. Lots of summons escorting us, and we refreshed when-ever enemies did things like death spell.

We returned to the woodsman and he pointed us to a grave-site. But before going, Corthief II laid down 4 spike traps and 3 snares. We checked out the grave site - another battle, but Korgan is just devastating with Yaga's warhammer and Crom Fayre in the off-hand.

We return, and sure enough the "woodsman" shows his true colors and attacks with some friends. Viconia was getting hurt but we kept her alive. Yet again, Edwin cast protection from fire on everyone before this fight began, so that helped no one to die from fire damage.

Corthief II, Sarevok and Jaheira then do the laborious task of looting everything - this took quite a while, especially with the all the identifying that Corthief had to do. Corthief made sure to investigate the woodsman house and got all the items there.

I want to get my save vs. spells fixed, so will go to Watcher's Keep and see if we can't get the Claw's protection to work.

The save bonus was probably dispelled. The equipped bonuses of the Claw of the Kagaroth were erroneously flagged as dispellable in vanilla. The G3 Fixpack addressed this.

Removing and re-equipping may restore the bonuses, but keep in mind that a dispel could remove them again in combat. Personally, I would not use the bugged Claw.

Twerp - dwarf swashbuckler (update 8)

In the Underdark killed some drow, but left the victims in the giant soul gem.  Clearing most of the kuo-toa enclave got Twerp to level 35 - I fancied the 2-handed sword on one of the demon knights, but couldn't generate a summons to activate the altar, so left them.

A Balor was time-trapped and walled in to its hole again before Twerp moved on via Adalon to the drow city.  Pre-laid traps killed Boz and the ambushers with the exception of the thief - Twerp ran round dispelling illusions to avoid the danger of backstabs.

A time trap set for Phaere's captors failed (one of them must have appeared on top of it), but a couple of Usuno WWs did the job neatly anyway (level 36).  The remainder of Phaere's tasks were quickly completed.  I hadn't actually intended to kill Solaufein, but clicked on the wrong conversation option.  That meant that before admitting to the Matron mother that Twerp already had some blood I sent him to put some traps round Adalon.  I wasn't sure what would happen if Phaere was killed at this stage, so swapped the eggs anyway (using WW to get away quickly).  At the ceremony Twerp killed Phaere, but the Demon lord went hostile.  Firetooth wouldn't touch him, but a couple of Carsomyr WWs sent him back to hell.  The city was hostile, but Twerp managed to get out before they shut the gates; stealth prevented those chasing him from following him away - though they wouldn't have stood a chance anyway.

Twerp attacked Adalon before talking to him - the combination of a time-trap WW and pre-laid snares proving too much for the dragon (level 37).  He ran out of the Underdark and, after interrogation by Elhan, made his way back to Athkatla.

In the City Twerp made Kruin wild before picking up all his old equipment.  A bit of upgrading later (Gesen, the Wave and the flesh armour) he went to deal with Bodhi.  The vampires were just meleed (level 38), while WWs were used to deal quickly with Bodhi and her supporters (level 39).

Twerp returned to Elhan and has just been shown the way to Suldanesselar.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Twerp, swashbuckler L39, 123 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 1,271 kills

Grond0 - since you killed Adalon you can make the flesh armor, are you going to make it? +4 to saves and 20% magic resist kind of nice. And yep, that demon needs +5 to hit - good thing you had the Carsomyr. Black Blade of Disaster maybe work too? Not sure...I think MMM can work too. You obviously would have to cast all these things from scrolls...

Alesia, no flip-flops of beach trekking?

Corey, any reason Viconia doesn't cast remove curse.

Just tried another save & yes the slayer shadows save vs death was no threat to a dwarf kensai even after dumping rings/amulet and getting malisoned. Bone golems couldn't beat the +1 resistance either.

While I was there I tested the Big Metal Gun. The Frag ammo and scorcher ammo were no use but then I tried the pulse ammo. Straight through her stoneskins for 4 damage per hit and chance to disrupt casting. Handy to know, if you ask me.
