The Story of BlackStrider & The Motley Crue (Update #33. Yaga-Shura):

Thoroughly pondering on Alesia's tips about Keep's level 3 anti-demons strategies I suddenly realized that I never even tried an Enhanced Bard Song. It has most essential anti-demon immunities - fear, stun, confusion but above that it greatly increases the fighting qualities of the Crue. Eager to try that we headed to the Forest of Mir. Undead fell quickly to Corey's Azuredge and Krimlor's IMoD, then two our Skelly Warriors + Planetar made a short work of local Bone Party. But the main fun awaiting us in Marching Mountains - under BlackStrider's Song buffs the Avatars just steamrolled through the whole area causing death and destruction over here and there. I'm so impressed with that Song and with Blade's tanking capabilities that now seriously considering to find a rightful place for Haer'Dalis in my future parties.

Nyalee and her pets fell to our pre-laid traps and we arrived to the Siege Camp. The first wave of Yaga-Shura army was a test of our endurance and patience - first to dispatch them all, then to pick up the loot...

Then Alesia trapped heavily the Bridge and Grond scouted ahead to find Yaga-Shura. He spotted him near the town wall and shooted with fire bolt causing him to yell in anger both for being hit at all and more so being hit by fire... Yaga then called for reinforcement, we left Planetar on the Bridge to entertain them and lured Yaga away to deal with him in safety (lieutenant mage was our main concern here). With all his damage resistances Yaga lasted quite long but was unable to deal enough damage in turn so finally fell (Corey claimed the victory but all the Avatars have contributed).

@corey: you may also consider a Cloak of Sewers Rat form to tank those Giants.

I can relate to multiplayer hide in shadows failing Corey, has happened to me with nasty results a few times. Never noticed when I was hosting the game so suspect it is the client player that suffers.

Edit. How many wands of frost can you get your mits on?

@Gate70: We could have 1,000,000 wands of frost. It would make no difference - no one can use it! When Gum got chunked we lost UAI and thus lost access to things like Wands of Frost. Loqi is a fighter/cleric so he can't use wands of frost either...will be about 3,000,000 experience before Chunky gets UAI again...
@Serg: You say Corey got the kill shot on Yaga-Shura, yet you say the most powerful enemy Corey has killed is a balor - how can that be? Surely Yaga is more powerful than a mere balor...

I belatedly realised I'd used the Namarra silence on Rayic (it failed hence the punchfest). As I write I even more belatedly realise Namarra has 3 silence charges and I'd only used 1. A post mortem indicates Gaius was unlikely to be affected by it anyway, his unbuffed save vs spell is 1 (another lesson filed away for attempted recall later).

Hard luck Gate.  Don't give up on Namarra though.  In addition to multiple attempts, saves vs silence are also at -5, so you have a pretty good chance of success even against someone like Rayic Gethras.

@Corey. I don't normally bother with trying to get healing from the hammer-wielding giants, but I have on several occasions supplemented a low AC strategy by standing in a fire-pit with high fire resistance - you might find that a useful addition or alternative to using blunt resistance.

That can work too. Do whatever you feel comfortable with Corey.

Btw. Here's a shot of Ashanti using a Roranach's + Hardiness + Armor of Faith based approach against Demogorgon.
Posted Image

As you can see, she has surrounded herself with demons. But while she appears to be imperiled, she's actually completely safe. By combining the White Dragon Scale Armor with the Shield of the Order she has gotten her AC low enough to insure that the crusher, Demogorgon, will hit far more consistently than the flanking slashers. Between the regen off of Demogorgon's crushing blows and the additional healing taken from whirlwinding into an Aura of Flaming death with 127% fire resistance, the slashers have no hope of harming her.

Anyhoo: Best of luck against those giants Corey!

Just checked it out once again and there is indeed a Balor as a most powerful vanquished in his statistic record. I can't say that Balors are *mere* enemies at all but browsing through NearInfinity I found a lot of creature files for various Balors. Some worth 26000 exp value while another worth 46000 (Irenicus' in Hell ones in particular and I think thats the one Corey has in his stats page). Yaga-Shura worth 45000 exp so looks like he is less powerful than those Irenicus' Balors.

Grale - dwarf kensai (update 3)

Some orogs tried to prevent Grale getting to Trademeet, but a Bhaal horror split them up enough to make them pretty easy.  At the town some genies handed over an efreeti bottle (though Grale had to go invisible during the combat to avoid accumulating damage) and opened up the shops to provide Blackblood and the Dwarven Thrower.

With an acidic weapon to hand Grale proceeded to the Druid Grove and cleared the trolls.  The efreeti's stinking cloud was handy against Kyland Lind and Dalok.  Left the rakshasas for now and let Cernd snack on Faldorn.

Back in Trademeet I was surprised to find that the main shopkeeper had disappeared - Grale now has money to spend again, but no BoIB, cloak of displacement or Ras.  Leaving the area and returning didn't help, so Grale just cleared the tomb before travelling back to Athkatla.

A quick trip to the graveyard netted a ioun stone - daystar sorting out most of the spiders and the RoAC making the poison of the few remaining no threat.

On to de'Arnise Hold.  The first group of trolls proved too strong for an unbuffed Grale and he had to run to find a door he could slam on his pursuers.  After that he got low on HPs a few more times, but never had to retreat again.  He accepted leadership of the stronghold from Nalia.  He's now at level 13, with saving throws sufficiently low to protect him from most threats.

He only appears at certain times of the day Grond0, can't remember offhand. He'll be back, or should be.

The third incarnation of Carthusian the monk has squeaked past Sarevok (or more precisely the lightning trap in the temple of Bhaal got him down to 1hp), and only rested to pick up his six Bhaalspawn abilities. BG1 was cleared in 30 days and 6 hours.

He woke up in a cage on day 31 and 0 hours. 9 hours later he stood at the dungeon exit without resting. He had used only 2 Bhaalspawn abilities (slow poison to grab his golden pantaloons and slow poison to grab the portal key from Jon's room), so 2 cure light wounds, 2 DUHM's and the usual lay on hands & stunning blows remain. Various healing potions were used but quickslots still full of them.

Notable events.
The sewage golem radiant mephit managed a colourspray but Carthusian had anticipated and moved away.
The otyugh was too slow to deal with shadow attacks.
The two lesser clay golems were meleed without buffs and went down without landing a hit.
Ilyich and co should learn from his acorns - stick together at all costs.
The globed cambion took 3 unbuffed hit / run combo's without landing a hit.
The walkway mephits were killed in the elemental plane, the others failed to spot the Sword of Chaos float away.
The mephit portals were easy, mephits drawn away and sneak back to de-portal.
Ulvaryl was badly wounded and a firebreath potion finished her off.

The Jon and Imoen show lasted from day 31 hour 9 to day 32 hour 7. They've gone on a world tour.

Edit: Monk 9. 207 kills (112 of which were in BG), Angelo. 61 / 75hp.

@Grond0 - I think the main shopkeeper is supposed to appear after dealing with the Genie problem, which sounds like you didn't do. Also, sometimes he hasn't appeared until I did the druid grove problem as well, I'm not sure what the rhyme/reason that is. Finally, he's not there at night, so resting until you see him can work sometimes as well.

I've just loaded my last failed attempt and moved the timer an hour at a time with CTRL/T then rested 3 times after each move.

He turns up at 7am and clocks off at 6pm.

Corey might be right too, you've dealt with the djinn but have you spoken to the guildmistress?Edit, at least he does in my install and since we've got the same setup so should yours.

edit (reading below). doh!

He's already acquired Blackblood and the Dwarven Thrower so presumably he's already done that.

I'm guessing Grale just arrived during off hours.

Best,

A.

Carthusians obviously aren't meant to play in the Temple sewers. Although C3 is still alive he's seen a kobold witch doctor bounce a lightning bolt off him and onto Roger the Fence. Thankfully Roger survives (together with the supply of some vital potions) and kills the witch doctor with arrows. C3 finishes off the rest of the kobolds and makes a start on the Rakshasa, only for it to disappear at near-death (think it was punched into the nearby wall - can't hide in that area but no sign of it). There goes the cloak of the sewers, unless it returns later?

I rested half a dozen times in between shopping / clearing tomb and again after going to the Grove and back - so it's not just that I've missed his normal opening hours. However, I'm sure Grale will survive without the missing equipment ... or not.

Edit: reading Gate70's last post was interesting - Roger was also just hit by a lightning bolt in my game and started shooting at the witch doctor (though it was Grale's hammer that finished him off).

If you're certain you've arrived during business hours, then it sounds like you've encountered a bug. If you'd like to remedy that with the console, you should feel free, in my opinion.

Best,

A.

The only other thing is perhaps Grond0 battled that guy that kills the guy arguing about whether war makes us strong, should bend with the wind, etc. That happens right by the merchant, maybe the merchant ran somewhere. Also I know Grond0 often likes to run and shoot - if he was run and shooting anywhere around there when Grond0 was battling the genies, again the merchant could have ran somewhere to get away from the red circles. So to find him, Grond0 may have to search the entire town (inn perhaps?)

Grale - dwarf kensai (update 4)

Back in the temple sewers Grale bought up some potions from Roger and helped him out with a troll problem.  Also nabbed a cloak from a rakshasa before his sword proved too quick for Gaius' buffs - none of the rest of the party were able to offer any defense.  Mekrath was helpless after a Kitthix web, while a Bhaal horror split up a group of umber hulks for easy disposal.

After that Grale went back to Trademeet again and, to my surprise, found the merchant waiting.  I hung around and travelled a bit to confirm he was still there at the same times as I had visited earlier, so am not sure what happened to him before.

Back to Athkatla, where DUHM + efreeti & Kitthix proved enough for the Fallen Paladins.  A first outing for Ras then made solving the skinner murders easy (thus wasting a first use of the shield amulet).

Tried to fob Sir Sarles off with some sub-standard illithium, but with no success.  By the time Grale had recovered the real stuff from Neb Sir Sarles had departed in a huff so Grale will hang on to it in case it proves useful for anything else.  Recovered the Dawn Ring for Lathander before teaching Neb a lesson, receiving a ransom and watching Sansuki play with some vampires.

Grale - dwarf kensai (final update)

On to the Planar Sphere, where a kai assault under RoAC made the initial battle easy.  However, Grale came a cropper taking on a large group of umber hulks unbuffed.  I consciously took a slight risk by trying to go invisible by ring when down to 22 HPs, thinking he would be able to survive 1 more hit - he couldn't (probably didn't help that I think he still had the throwing hammer equipped!).

Posted Image

He had taken similar types of risks while on low HPs a number of times before in the run, so I was actually slightly surprised he made it that far.  The next run I will be more careful.

Loqi - gnomish fighter/cleric, controlled by CR
Chunky - human berserker dualed to thief, controlled by Dog
Permanently killed: Bait, Gum

@Grond0 - sorry to hear the end of your run. I really don't like item invisibilities in combat as a number of times I have been interrupted it and my character never did them.

Yes, the run is still going! We used all the suggestions from the board (Alesia_BH, Grond0, Gate70), and we made it past the initial 8 giants in Yaga's Temple.

So Loqi did Armor of Faith, Hardiness, something like 200% fire resistance, equipped the ronarch's helm (or however you spell it), and stood in the fire pit to tank and use his GWW/WW that he had. Chunky did 3 backstabs via item invisibilities then she tried the rat form and she tanked OK with that form. Took a while to kill the giants, and ran out of Hardiness as well, and the rat form even expired too. But by then only two fire giants were left, so Loqi ran to the side and summoned a Deva, while Chunky distracted them - yes, opening area clear.

We basically did the same thing for all the other areas on the first level, except we didn't bother with rat form, as Loqi tanks great using Alesia_BH's strategy. To clear the first level did require a few stops in the pocket plane, but even full parties I need to do that, so no suprise there.

Forgot to mention, Chunky tried to loot in the initial fire pit when Loqi's fire protection expired on her and she managed to kill herself. Loqi got her back to speed...what's also interesting is after two days in the party, the most powerful enemy vanquised is...no one!! Apparently Loqi and all the summons have made all the kill shots. Thus, the only person Chunky has managed to kill is...herself. Or should I say himself? Dogdancing made Chunky male, she says her female characters just weren't getting it done....

8 more levels and chunky will unlock her berserk abilities...

Last night...
Carthusian is getting to seriously dislike the temple sewers. A sneaky jaunt to Gaal is completed but on the way back he gets locked into a poisonous chamber with two vampiric mists. He manages to get to the control wheel (an achievement when returning from Gaal) and opens the door but the mists have blocked him in. One extra healing potion is used to kill one mist then he runs out of the cloud and kills a second with another potion glugged. A shadow has joined in, and brings several friends so 2 more potions are glugged (down to 3 potions left).

Once that lot is all done Carthusian is drained back to level 9 (could have been much worse). He forlornly tries to DUHM bust open the entrance to a door in the Docks district (trying to cross off another level drain) but 22 strength isn't enough to achieve this. After paying 750gp for a greater restoration he frees Hendak then reluctantly has a first rest in Amn.

Day 33 hour 12. Monk 11, 79hp. 319 kills (112 of which in BG1), Angelo (BG1).

Carthusian (3): Day 33 hour 18
A six hour slot (about 1 hour game time) sees a fair amount packed in despite the level drain and restoration at the start meaning the remainder is all under fatigue.

Liches: Shade > City Gates > Elemental > Kangaxx. Twisted Rune door opened.
Neb: Protection from Undead was still running and the child spirits stood idle. Handed his head in.
Cloak of the Sewers: The Rakshasa and Roger had returned to their usual places, thanks very much.
Sir Sarles: Gave him the alloy (not sure which gives more XP as the illithium is of no use elsewhere).
Gaelan Bayle: Paid his 15k.
Pai'Na: Grab the ioun stone and melee everything in sight.

Have you ever tried taking the pure Illithium to Cromwell along with the Mace from the upper level of Bodhi's hangout? And have you ever taken the alloy to Radiant Heart HQ? Posted Image

I assure you, Gate is well aware of Improved Mace of Disruption forged by Cromwell. But I'm curious about taking the alloy to Radiant Heart HQ... - priests always took it from me. What about Paladins in that case?

Some news of the Avatars' recent adventures.
We fought our way through the Oasis and into the Amkethran. There we got rid of some impudent mercenaries, helped Asana , Cleric of Waukeen and got some shiny ones from local smugglers. After selling our numerous (and hard earned) loot we could afford to fill our mage's books with all essential spells. Before engaging Vongoethe we buffed over the top but he fell instantly to Alesia's traps and the rest of his supporters were dispatched withing a round.

Posted Image

Now we are en route to Sendai's Enclave.
