Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 26 {2} - (update 3)
Stiel, halfling assassin (Grond0) & Andal, human bounty hunter (Gate70)

Today's session began with a lich hunt.  As the Shade Lich had already been trapped last time, scrolls of undead protection only had to stretch to the City Gates, Bridge District and then the Docks.  That meant no potions of speed were needed on the way to finish off Kangaxx.

After paying Gaelan Bayle the duo quickly used a sunray to see off Lassal and some traps on the Guild Contact on the way to vampire HQ.  Plenty of traps were used there, though the grimwarders were not susceptible and were treated to backstabs instead.  Andal was dominated once, but the vampire responsible didn't take the opportunity to press home its attack, so no great problem.  Bodhi survived her initial allocation of traps, but Andal got just enough space when running away round a corner to throw back a special trap to finish her off.

After reporting to Aran Linvail the duo started Mae'Var's tasks.  Moving through Rayic Gethras' house wasn't entirely straightforward.  The mephits and golems both handed out significant damage, while Stiel found PW:stun beating him in a race for the exit.  Stiel had an automatic save vs FoD, but Andal still had to expose himself as a target for a few rounds while Stiel recovered to send a series of poisoned darts that eventually pierced Rayic's stoneskin.

On leaving Rayic's house the duo also got exposed by Parisa.  She survived a number of traps and the duo found they were no match for her in melee.  Stiel got drained to level 4 before going invisible: a firebreath potion combined with a nice critical from Andal eventually seeing off the danger.

Andal had pre-laid a number of traps in the guild, but (as usual) they failed to fire.  However, the duo had no problems in dealing with the thieves anyway.

Stats:
Stiel, assassin L14, 77 HPs (incl. 7 from ioun stone), 246 kills
Andal, bounty hunter  L14, 72 HPs, 289 kills, 2 deaths

Yep, my comment meant the mace was no use to a monk, improved or not. Having checked a guide it sounds like handing over the real stuff gets far more XP but I've more of that than is essential anyway. & I always hand the alloy in to the temple of Helm, at least in the runs I remember. Do the paladins take note of it too?

Better to overdo the buffing than the alternative Serg. Many of my early games with many reloads were due to that.

Several bitty sessions today, Carthusian (III) is still alive and kicking. He's on Day 38 hour 11 and the below is what I remember (tricky as there was a multiplayer session in the middle covering the same ground - just seen Grond0 has posted on that). Was fatigued from the last session.

Stamped out the slavery racket and informed Hendak. That got us to dusk so down to the Docks. Kitthix died just as Carthusian booted Lassal off Mook, briefly thought it took longer than expected. Jaylos, Caehan and Gravy-Gracen were kicked into touch, again thought Gravy did well.

Went into the vampire nest, used a green scroll of Protection from Undead once Lassal challenged to head downstairs. Killed the upstairs group including Tanova but had to chase them round and kept missing. Decided the fatigue must be reducing THACO by a lot so glad to decided to rest instead of wait out the scroll expiry. Lassal challenged to fight upstairs so used a second green scroll to deal with him, Bodhi and two strays (one went back into the spike room so left that one).

Used the remaining PfU to deal with the easily accessible undead in the Graveyard, and scattered Uncle Lester as he refused to become ashes. Give late chase to Rejiek Hidesman and deal with his rune assassins, ghasts and bone golem.

To Watchers Keep for a potion container. Left the main room unopened, stoned a golem then dealt with wraiths and shadow fiends before grabbing the Crimson Dart.

To Trademeet. Shut the genies down using the Improved Invisibility RoAC. Sneak through the Druid grove killing spiders, ettercaps, spore colonies and Dalok (spores confused Carthusian twice, down to 18hp at one stage and mentally preparing Carthusian IV). Observed Cernd eating messily.

Bought plenty of potions from Adratha (handy for ToB). Arrived back at Trademeet overnight so dealt with the Mantle of Waukeen and Rejiek Hidesman / Darsidian Moor. Rested in the tavern after scaring Viekang to remove another restoration fatigue and for the main merchant to set his stall out. Bought Blackblood (ToB fire trolls), Cloak of Displacement, Belt of Inertial Barrier and Ras (had to sell some emeralds for Ras).

Thanks for good wishes, friends!

BTW, what is the second ring Carthusian is wearing, Gate? Of Human Influence or Regeneration? Think you maybe just from shopping so that is of Human Influence as wearing Ring of Regeneration along with Gaxx has no point at all (I'm sure you know that already).

edit: oh, you can't have the Ring of Regeneration yet...

Yep, influence. A mod to gently change identical item appearances would be nice. Also the effect of multiple regenerations was covered 3-4 weeks ago and a suggestion it depends on what install/mods people have as to the actual effect.

Carthusuan (III), Day 40 hour 9.

A visit to Umar Hills has identified trouble at another ruined temple. Carthusian decides not to investigate without negative plane protection, and departs with another sword in his backpack - Ilbratha. Valygar accompanies him far enough to open the Planar Sphere up then it is left open as each person departs in an opposite direction.

Various potions and scrolls are stockpiled before Rayic Gethras is treated to 3x Namarra silence (failed), Kitthix, Ras and efreeti the last of which survives thanks to the whirling crimson dart. Mae'Var has been thumped and dumped, meaning there is little left to do in the city. Carthusian needs a final fund-raising, cost is one potion of magic shielding (which proves to be the belt and braces when magic resistance kicks in anyway). Screenshot shows that text but action is several seconds later when the mage buffs are about to be bashed apart.
Posted Image

With a couple of turns of automatic saving throws Carthusian goes to remonstrate with Mekrath - forgetting he caved in to the mage earlier. So he heads for the yuan-ti nearby only to find umber hulks. A round later he runs & hides after determining an armour class of -7 doesn't cut it with them.

The lack of level drain protection is becoming more of an issue (in my mind, although green scrolls continue to be an option). The amulet and mace aren't options, nor will Runehammer be. That leaves the likes of Spectral Brand and Angurvadal but both require Cespenar so will have to work around it. Hindo's Doom would help with restorations but it's almost at the bottom of Watchers Keep.

Gate70, the way I see if you have 3 main options, some one like Alesia_BH can correct me if I'm wrong.

1) For certain enemies, like vampires, often very high AC is enough protection
2) For level drain enemies you cannot avoid melee, undead green scroll
3) Range attack the level draining enemies if room to do so.
And the last, desperate thing you can do:
4) Use restoration scroll and fight fatigued

That's about my plan Corey, just doesn't feel great in no reload.

The Item Pack number 5 sounds like it Grond0. Some (many?) of the other options seem overpowered, I might have a look next install and see if that part can be added without the rest. Number 8 sounded nice, a store in the pocket plane but then mentions duplicate unique artifacts...

Carthusian went in search of a lesson tonight. Firstly, don't summon a glabrezu with ogres, ettercaps, efreeti, nishruu, etc. else your student might stand at the door until everything else is dead and then dart it.

Second, try to stick together. Sure, you may get an area effect spell but your student is a monk so he won't be doing much of that. Koshi's quick but he ought to wait for backup. Maferan and Olaf are tough but they're easy targets when hit run and hide can be done twice a round. Sion really ought to keep all three of these idiots in his sight.

Stalman ought not to cast after being punched because a second punch or a kick usually disrupts his thoughts. Sion almost had it with repeated (not cast - infinite?) true sights but losing track of Ketta leaves him red and black as the darts hit double top.

Ketta certainly knows how to inflict pain but a target that hits back twice then hides to regenerate before returning with a single weapon armour bonus means she's only hitting half the time.

Oh, and you should lock us all in otherwise the student will nip off to the shop to sell the equipment of your fallen comrades.

Carthusian (III). Day 40 hour 22
The Unseeing Eye is next. Running out of the prismatic spray trap range, sneaking past beholders and shadows to yet another ancient temple, skirting a petrification trap. Tripping the petrification trap on the way out (oops but magic resistance handles it).

Ghoul town is cleared apart from one pedestal with a visiting lich, Carthusian has no need to risk his life or limb there. A couple of stray gauth are beaten up before every container is looted (many under watchful eyes because anything on the floor can be right-clicked). The Unseeing Eye is rodded and kicked, providing Carthusian with an amulet of 5% magic resistance.

Roger is cleared out of potions and the temple of Helm sell many green scrolls. Unger Hilldark will be asking for a pay rise to guard this amount of gear, meanwhile Borinall has been visited to retrieve a ring for the temple of Lathander.

Carthusian decides the Planar Sphere and Planar Prison will have to wait until he learns to carry more (bag of holding) and the Twisted Rune feels way beyond his capability. This leaves Umar temple, Firkraag, de'Arnise and Brynnlaw (I think).

Carthusian, day 43 hour 14 19
Firkraag can wait, his prisoner has been released and Carthusian has what he came for - the Dragonslayer sword and a ring of fire protection. More shopping is piled onto a table at the Copper Coronet and Unger Hilldark  is convinced to look after it by setting up a mead tab for him.

There is plenty of spare cash even after purchasing a couple more swords (one with fire damage and Balduran for +10% magic resistance), and Carthusian trys to figure out which items to take on holiday to Brynnlaw. Has he forgotten anything - still got a bit of spare room.

Carthusian
It was a long trip, docking at Brynnlaw on day 51 hour 0. Bats can fly faster than that...

Perth the Adept takes four poisoned throwing daggers then immolates himself trying to fireball Kitthix. Carthusian turns at least 30 pages and should have stopped at several of them (true sight, far sight, wyvern call, stinking cloud, protection from evil) but ends up burning his hands.

Vampire drains and wraith drains result in another lesser restoration. Together with the Yoshimo rations he drops off while talking to the Spellhold co-ordinator and wakes up in a supersize jam jar. He had a strange dream about Bhaal being unable to hurt him (monk weapon immunity has kicked in) and Imoen helping to wake him up.

Irenicus dumps Carthusian into the grasp of Bodhi and then Imoen. Carthusian is still fatigued so rests again and everybody is gone so he makes his own way out, grabbing a nearby bag of holding to lighten his load.

Pulpit > Crystal shard > yuan-ti > Dace Sontan (read a green scroll after dialogue) > lich, mummies & skeleton warriors > umber hulks > item statues > riddle statues > genie portal > more yuan-ti. Even the greater yuan-ti has the problem experienced by Bhaal - weapon ineffective, and the only spell that three yuan-ti mages land is one set of magic missiles.

The second part of the Spellhold maze is safely negotiated and the Carthusian Slayer scares Bodhi off. It is day 51 hour 16 as the exit doors are prised open.

Carthusian. Monk 24, 115hp (including 10 from ioun stone).
72% natural magic resistance.  +10% Gaxx +5% amulet = 87%.
Sword of Balduran could add another 10% so can reach 100% when needed at next level.

Question;
Is there a list of spells that ignore magic resistance. Imprisonment and sphere of chaos are 2 I remember.

Day 51 hour 18
Irenicus falls for the old GWW > 7-8 hits, retreat and summon Kitthix as Wanev timestops. As soon as time resumes Jonny boy makes his escape. Carthusian gets his next level and checks he can reach 100% magic resistance. He can, but the cost is that of using weapons instead of fists - good job he has GWW's available for such emergencies then.

Don't remember seeing a simple list.

I'm not sure that the Spells Reference spell descriptions are fully comprehensive, but they list the following as ignoring magic resistance:
arcane - chromatic orb, sunfire, imprisonment and dragon's breath
divine - bolt of glory, firestorm & implosion.

Thanks. Suspect there are one or two more. Bolt of Glory for example (doh, been Grondo'd).

Into the Underdark. Only the two non-hostiles were freed from the captured souls device, the balor has been stoneshaped and all enemies apart from the portal elementals cleared (so just Boz later barring mishaps).

The demon knights managed one level drain between them, so a rest there. Cleared the kuo-toa prince and the party guarding the exit.

The Elder Orb took 3 Crimson Dart GWW's, a GWW and a few rounds of running around. Scooted and looted everywhere else in the shadows apart from the area where the other Elder Orb resides with his ranged imprisonment.

Monk 28, 936 kills, Kangaxx. Day 53 hour 5.
(running with 93% magic resistance and the Cloak of Mirroring and the Belt of Inertial Barrier)

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 26 {2} - (update 4)
Stiel, halfling assassin (Grond0) & Andal, human bounty hunter (Gate70)

The nefarious couple had another session yesterday.  That was fun, although they were taking on stiff challenges and got a bit of a kicking as a result.

Things started with the Fallen Paladins.  They didn't notice the vicious traps set in their midst and didn't last long as a result.  Reynald did manage to survive both traps and an initial backstab of 52, but a follow-up of 57 was too much for him.

Neb was another trap victim and Stiel used DUHM to be able to carry his illithium to Cromwell.  Andal could just manage to carry the 50 lb lighter alloy and, after Sir Sarles turned it down he tried to pass it off at the Radiant Heart and the temples of Lathander and Talos.  Despite rumours to the contrary, only the temple of Helm was interested in decorating their front porch with it.  While on temple business the Dawn Ring was also recovered for Lathander.

So far so good then.  However, Andal then decided to stretch his abilities a bit and invade the Guarded Compound.  He wasn't quick enough to run back after the glabrezu gated in and all the enemies started chasing him.  The aim then was for him to run them round while Stiel used the Crimson Dart on the demon.  However, before he could kill him Andal fell down from a PW: stun and was swiftly killed. Stiel ran away and tracked down a potion of power at the Temple of Helm in the belief that would get his HPs over 90.  Unfortunately the bonus to base HPs from that was not cumulative with his ioun stone, so he was still short.  That meant that Andal was revived again to act as a staked goat; he performed that function admirably - another PW: stun got him immediately on entry and he died within seconds, but lasted just long enough for the glabrezu to go down as well

After another visit to the temple the duo came back to finish off the rest of the enemies.  The efreeti turned gaseous to avoid death by poison, but could not avoid death from the nest of traps constructed by Andal.  Upstairs, the duo disarmed the traps on a first visit before coming back down.  Up again, the idea was to set some traps in a side room.  However, Sion produced a true sight (scripted, not cast) before they could get there and they went back down again.  Stiel used a potion of speed to run Koshi round and dart him to death.  The other potential danger left downstairs was Ketta.  Stiel ran round for a while, allowing Andal to set traps to deal with her.  Sion and the cleric were still upstairs, but left alone as the duo had primarily been interested in getting Celestial Fury.

With that challenge out of the way the duo immediately moved on to another one in the Planar Prison.  A bit of mis-communication meant they were spotted laying initial traps and Andal had to use a number of healing potions while running enemies round before they could be finished off (mainly with poisoned darts).  A few thralls, lots of umber hulks and a wyvern were safely negotiated, but there was more trouble in store from the Master of Thralls.  His elementals were highly resistant to trap damage and chased the duo round for quite a while before expiring - in the meantime Andal got paralyzed by the demon's gaze, requiring Stiel to resort to a potion of magic shielding to protect himself.  After Stiel picked up the rod of resurrection and got Andal back in business, several traps were laid for the demon, which took him to near death.  However, he refused to die despite being hit quite a few more times - his vampiric gaze doing just enough damage to counter-balance the damage he took.  With not much in the way of resources left to try the berserk warrior eventually helped out and simultaneous hits from him and Stiel did the job.

Stats:
Stiel, assassin L15, 79 HPs (incl. 7 from ioun stone), 271 kills
Andal, bounty hunter  L15, 74 HPs, 318 kills, 5 deaths

Huron defeated Sarevok. However, he forgot to buff when dealing with the mephit portals and his save vs. spells at 9 really hurt this time. He was put to sleep and never woke up.

It's a cut & shut paste from a screenshot, a customisable UI would be nice. The enhanced edition has some changes but "everything on one screen" would be my preference.

Carthusian clears the illithid lair as quickly as he can (not sure if some effects could stun him), taking 4 minor brain injuries which soon recover.

Edit, & forgot to mention Simyaz. He cast maze, was slow in spotting it but 93% magic resistance was sufficient. Didn't remember he was a mazer.

Hard luck, Corey... I understand that buffing every now and then could be quite tedious (much simplier when solo though) but looks like even mere enemy could be fatal when you alone. Be more careful next time.

That's a shame Corey. How about trying a straight mage next time? If you don't mind regular resting (easy once you've learnt invisibility) they can progress through the game just as quickly as a fighter type.

Day 56 hour 16
Carthusian has helped Adalon at the expense of the Matron Mother and Phaere, is now back at the Copper Coronet after transporting all manner of items to Watchers Keep.

He's considering the jobs that are left (whether there are any nice-to-have items for a monk to collect) before heading over to the Graveyard. Hmm?
- Firkraag.
- Planar Prison.
- Planar Sphere.
- Shade Lord / Shadow dragon.
- Twisted Rune
- de'Arnise Keep.

Don't think there is anything that he'll need from them. Machine of Lum the Mad is tempting though.

@gate70: what about the drinker? monk usable charm immunity, planar prison.

@Grond0: Solo mage is very frustrating for me. I remember one time it took me like 15 min. to kill 6 gnolls with my mage thaco and with no spells hardly at low levels...I'm sure I'll do mage one day once more but it will be with a party...if there's a fast way to kill things with a solo low level mage I certainly don't know how to do it...

Monks are immune to charm at level 9 & he's got the Equalizer bagged (charm & confusion).

For low level solo mage I suspect Grond0 would kill Shoal, probably with blindness > daggers or darts. I'd probably go Candlekeep > Marl > Firebead > Brage (edit: Noober > Oublek) > Samuel > Basilisks with Korax, although Shoal would be tempting.

Have fun whatever you do next.

Bodhi is not amused. Carthusian has turned up without a significant other and moved far enough away from her minions to safely use a green scroll (had switched to long sword so AC dropped from -12 to -13 as a precaution). A short while later his work is done but at some point he has become fatigued so rests.  By Day 58 hour 2 he is standing outside Suldanessellar.
