The golems in Suldanessellar pound away at Carthusian (I always find them hard work). At least the other enemies are easier, including GWW Firetooth dagger attacks disrupting Raamilat. He eventually manages to cast meteor swarm so Carthusian switches to the Balduran sword and runs to attack. Raamilat is dead by the time he arrives though and as he stops another dagger passes by (high level monks with boots of speed really travel fast).

The GWW's run out before three rakshasa are dead and Demin the priestess is in mortal danger. Time for a first use of smite, and the felines are thrown against the building walls. On his way out Carthusian notices steps leading down and smells the unmistakable odour of something nasty.

A black dragon. The plant growth is avoided and insects are unable to bite through magic resistance, but Carthusian is covered in dragon spittle. He retreats upstairs and reads the fultiplayer manual ( 25(4) Tensor and Roche.  Charname is dissolved by a single black dragon acid breath ). Acid eh, no doubt there is something for that in the scroll case.

Sigh, some genuis has left the acid protection scrolls at Watchers Keep (was thinking Draconis, forgot Niz). Carthusian decides to return to Suldanessellar to see if he can find a merchant, failing that he'll have to do a quick trip.

Off for a scroll then. Purchase 4 from the temple district and pick up the 3 from Watchers Keep stash before returning. One is used against Niz, together with hardiness > RoAC II > Ilbratha mirror. A Balduran WW followed by a Balduran GWW is used until Niz takes damage them Carthusian switches to fists mid GWW. A couple of wing buffets are used to great effect but the monk eventually grabs the dragon by his/her tail and yanks hard enough for Niz to expire.

The Avatar of Rillifane sends in some spirit guardians while Carthusian rests and shops. He then grabs some spare nuts from a small tree and fixes two statues. Three parasites later it is time to be double-mazed in a timestop. Or not.

The Sword of Balduran is just fine thank you. Carthusian swats Jon with it every so often, not bothering to buff but instead using regeneration to keep his health together (not sure about <90hp even with 100% magic resistance). After a while the fireshields drop and Carthusian waits for a spell then switches to fists. As the next spell incantation starts he switches back to Balduran.

I can still see ways that a monk will be vulnerable. I just hope not to demonstrate them...

4 good choices and then Sarevok forces the Slayer change (only with 100% magic resistance the change doesn't happen and there is no special ability to do so). The alignment change and strength bonus both take effect though.

Irenicus teleports around as a pair of balors are GWW'd with Firetooth, then Carthusian closes in to melee a pair of Glabrezu. They can hit him fairly easily and as his health wanes he retreats to avoid paralyzation attempts. They are finished with GWW Firetooth and then the slayer Irenicus is taunted until his fireshield expires. Hardiness > GWW is enough to knock the Slayer taint out of him.

Carthusian wakes up in a woodland glade, wondering what the giant stone faces are for.

Edit. I suppose the cloak of mirroring is now superfluous. At least 3 choices - Displacement, Sewers and +2 in bag. Have an invisibility scroll but don't think I picked up an improved haste one.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 26 {2} - (update 4 - addendum)
Stiel, halfling assassin (Grond0) & Andal, human bounty hunter (Gate70)

I missed one odd incident off the earlier report.  We've noted on various occasions differences between what enemies are shown on our computers, but this was the first time we've been aware of differences in our own attacks.

When attacking Neb I thought he went down easily, but checking back through my text only Stiel had got a backstab.  However, on Gate70's computer Andal had also stuck his sword in.

The improved cloak would be no use to you anyway - neither protection from normal weapons, nor improved haste, would help Carthusian.

Fair point (also, have PFNW, invisibility scroll is for something else - Aslyferund at a guess). The +2 cloak could free up a ring slot (e.g. fire control) but the sewer cloak may get another outing as Displacement feels less useful now.

Or are thee spells that ignore magic resistance but offer saving throws. Must look.

The Improved Cloak of Protection grants +2 to saves and +2 to AC. It also allows the wearer to cast Improved Invisibility and Improved Haste (each once per day). The Improved Haste cast would be less helpful to Carthusian than to a non-monk, but the rest of the cloak's abilities could be helpful. Personally, I'd keep the Improved Cloak around.

Gate70 wrote...

Implosion and Dragon's Breath both offer a save for half damage. And as we've noted before, the petrification effect of Sphere of Chaos ignores magic resistance. In addition, there are on hit effects and special abilities to consider.

It's also worth remembering that there are spells that lower magic resistance in the game. And while I imagine Carthusian will take Jamis down quick, watch out for The Answerer.

Best,

A.

Btw. Congrats on finishing SoA Gate!

@Gate70, Does he have the "Kachiko's Wakizashi" & "Scarlet Ninja-To"?

p.s. the lossers are still going... slow going but they have two dragons under their belts and I'll try to post something soon.

Cusp - dwarf swashbuckler (hour 5)

Cusp made it through BG1 with one alarm.  My intention is to take him all the way, so need to try and minimise risks.  As part of that I'm restricting gameplay sessions to no more than an hour.  In the balance of that time left after defeating Sarevok Cusp made a start on the dungeon, working his way through to the library.  He did get stunned by a steam mephit, but there was no danger there - the mephit dying in traps when it tried to approach him.

Not got either of those ussnorway, no Joluv. Was the suggestion to make a fool of Draconis or Ogremoch?

& the improved cloak will be kept Alesia. If something is remotely useful to a CHARNAME I tend to bring it to ToB. You never know when you might need a plan d...

There is a ton of stuff in Watchers Keep but the essential overkill packing is as below;

Carthusian
Illasera decides she doesn't need any Black Reavers to help her. That's the sort of mistake you only make once.

The first Pocket Plane challenge (Retribution) culminates in Aran Linvail and Ellisime being knocked out while Duke Eltan bounces around with a trio of Smite blows.

Saradush
Raise a dead father via RoR, clear the prisoner, buy a 2nd potion container and bag of holding, upgrade the Cloak of Protection +2, re-home the elves, stop various in-fighting and abuse of tavern wenches. Clear the barracks out, get level drained by two Devil Shades, unable to bash the sewer door so get restored at the temple. Get level drained by one vampire despite two potions of Mind Focusing. Clear out the prison, get restored at the temple again. Get to Gromnir with 1 GWW left and still fatigued. Pick off his support then try a Quivering Palm before finishing him with the GWW.

A Protection from Undead scroll works against the Master Wraith, but two vampiric wraiths remain hidden (must remember for later). Nyalee tells Carthusian to retrieve two hearts from a nearby temple, the monk discovering exactly how hard fire giants can hit on the way.

He switches to the Fire Control ring and Improved Cloak +2. 3 potions are used, Fire Resistance > Heroism > Absorbtion then he casts Hardiness and enters the temple under stealth.

Sneaking over to an elite fire giant doesn't work as planned. Time to use a couple of GWW's then hide before standing on the firepit. A second elite fire giant is GWW'd from the start, and then four lesser giants are meleed without further ado. The entrance is now clear.

On to the top right area, again the two elites are GWW'd and the others are bashed apart. At one point Hardiness wears off and Carthusian is easily in 1-hit territory as he runs to hide before returning to finish the job. Grabbing a skull wardstone sees a trio of golems arrive. These are meleed on a firepit to preserve HLA's for later, with a trusty katana used against the magic golem.

The top left area has fire salamanders and fire trolls. Both meleed on a firepit, but after killing the salamanders and finishing one troll off with Blackblood Carthusian has to run and hide before returning to kill the final three.

The first of two central areas is quickly cleared but during the second Carthusian realises he is taking serious damage. 10 turns have passed and his fire resistance is down to 70%, so he glugs another potion and completes the task. The main staircase is now accessible, and two more fire giants fail to survive a slug-fest but half kill the monk so he searches out another firepit further into the temple. A brief check, 3x Hardiness and 7xGWW so good defence but the attacks may not be enough for a room full of enemies.

Berenn and a fell cat fall to the first GWW, a second fell cat falls to normal attacks and then Carthusian has to run to a second firepit. An elite fire giant survives a GWW attack so another run/hide to apply a second Hardiness and then the two elites are GWW'd. Very low HP (16) means running again, then the remaining enemies are killed.

After looting the area (no risk of maze today) a slave woman is freed and Imix is casually kicked around (and snuffed out) without using either remaining GWW on Day 67 hour 8. It seems a good result - clearing the entire temple without a rest (possibly a first for me).

That looks a lot like my standard packing list, expect the potion totals look low.

(I'm typically also lugging a whole lot of useless junk: Bodhi's heart, for example.)

(Although Bodhi's heart seems something other than useless when my characters confront her for the last time at The Throne. I imagine them saying nothing to her- instead responding to her taunts by casually drop her heart on the floor.)

Cusp - dwarf swashbuckler (hour 6)

Through the first level of the dungeon without any trouble.  Getting to level 11 means Cusp now has 100% in open locks and find traps - let's hope he remembers to use the latter.

For the mephit portals recent characters have tended to use Bhaal horror, but I didn't bother manipulating Cusp's reputation to get that.  He used the portal to get away from gathering mephits before coming back stealthed and locking them in.  That left the radiant mephit on its own and Cusp saved against his colour spray anyway.

No more problems getting out, though he didn't manage to hit Ulvaryl even once before she had finished snacking on the assassins.

There was just time in the session for Cusp to put things straight at the circus.

Russell IV and his band of level 8 paladins entering Trilogy No-Reload Challenge (B2 portion)

Russell IV and his friends defeated Sarevok. The group made it out of Irenicus dungeon. We skipped Fendan his his area, but otherwise did everything else. We have also solved the circus problem. Only paladins will be used is the intent, all the way to Melissan. This is the same team as prior Russell incarnations, except Russell himself is quite different - he is much smarter than prior ones (4 INT vs. 16), and this is to role-play passing by tough encounters until the team is capable (yeah shadow dragon looking at you). The prior Russells were a bit too gung-ho about crushing evil and got killed.

Cusp - dwarf swashbuckler (hour 7)

I was limiting myself to an hour at a time, but decided to carry on with another session this morning to get inventory preparation out of the way.  Cusp got some thieving potions after talking to Gaelan Bayle and stole / resold equipment to Jeyes to give himself enough money to not need to bother picking up treasure in future.

Here's his inventory at the conclusion of his initial gatherings:
Posted Image

There are also various items in store that he can't use yet.  I've got a couple of tweaks in my installation that allow unlimited stacking and introduce a few more hard-to-find cases (Mrs Cragmoon at the Bridge provided the potion case and Perter in the Promenade the ammo case).

The only fighting in that session was late on with the Suna Seni ambush.  Cusp was travelling stealthed and had no trouble beating them up.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 26 {2} - (update 5)
Stiel, halfling assassin (Grond0) & Andal, human bounty hunter (Gate70)

Some more decent progress yesterday - this time without any additional deaths.

The session started in the Planar Prison trying to pull the Warden into pre-laid traps.  He was reluctant to come - preferring to cast spells from a distance.  A PW: stun took effect on Andal and he had to make several saving throws before coming to his senses.  Eventually, though, the Warden did move forward to his doom  - just leaving a few umber hulks to be cleaned up before the duo could escape the prison.

Next up was the de'Arnise Hold.  The duo did pretty well here in using traps, backstabs and poison to sidestep their poor performance in melee. The yuan-ti mage managed to survive traps and used up just about all his spells before eventually falling.  Andal took advantage of his MP ability to backstab as well as having a chance of holding golems with Celestial Fury.  Gaining a level was a mixed blessing for Andal as his revised special traps (casting Otiluke's on opponents) can be a bit of a pain to wait out.  On the other hand the normal traps now do fire damage - one trap nicely putting one of Torgal's giant trolls down, while killing the other one.

The final destination was Windspear.  After returning the acorns the duo moved into the dungeon, where they had fun with both groups of hobgoblins at once.  Andal got held and sat most of the fight out while Stiel practised his run and shoot tactics with poisoned darts.  Feeling impatient to get into the action Andal headed straight for the kamikaze kobolds daring them to do their worst - fortunately that was not quite enough to kill him. After the duo were chased by golems for a while Andal finally managed to get a couple of traps down to deal with the clay one.  Stone ones were crimson darted from the shooting gallery and the iron one targeted through a gap in the wall.  The vampires could have been a pain, but were pretty well handled with traps and a touch of daystar.

The greater wolfweres regenerate quickly, so were hard to take down with missile or poison attacks.  One survived 4 backstabs, when those were low damage or not sufficiently close together - eventually Stiel rummaged in his bag to pull out the staff of striking to do the job.  Traps were laid for Samia and her crew with the intention of turning them all hostile at once through the use of an oil of burning.  However, that was unsuccessful and it took a while of running, hiding and backstabbing to finish them off.  There was no mistake with Conster though - the duo coming back into the area to find just a pile of burning clothes where they had left some traps.  With normal trap damage now largely fire based and special traps that do no damage, Firkraag seemed a pretty formidable obstacle and was left for now.

On the way out Andal couldn't resist using a special trap on some hobgoblins.  The animation seemed to take a while so it was amusing watching them being sealed up in bubbles one by one.

Stats:
Stiel, assassin L15, 79 HPs (incl. 7 from ioun stone), 271 kills
Andal, bounty hunter  L15, 74 HPs, 318 kills, 5 deaths

I'm glad you guys found a way to have some fun with the Otiluke traps. (I fracking hate those things...)

I'm looking forward to seeing what Stiel and Andal will be able to do together once Andal gets his maze traps. I've always thought an assassin and a bounty hunter would make a great pair.

Best,

A.

Btw. Whenever I see Stiel's portrait, I feel like I'm looking at David Johansen...

Cusp - dwarf swashbuckler (hour 8)

The first objective for the session was the pale green ioun stone.  Pai'Na and all but one of her spiders died from trap damage.

Next on the list was the Ring of Gaxx.  Renfeld was rescued on the way to the Temple District where Cusp made his way to the Shade Lich.  He survived the first round of damage, but not the follow-up; the Elemental Lich didn't even make it that far.  The City Gates Lich was confronted with a scroll of undead protection, a potion of speed and a beating with the Staff of Rhynn.  For Kangaxx Cusp switched to Daystar (non-proficient, but bonus damage is handy) and his lich form and demi-lich form both went down quickly.

He celebrated by trying to wrap charisma round to 25.  The minotaurs in Kangaxx's house provided the opportunity to lose 2, taking him down to 0.  I wanted to find some more enemies quick (to avoid the risk of absent-mindedly removing the ring of human influence) and picked on a pirate hide-out - they soon did the trick.

Russell IV the inquisitor and his band of level 8 Paladins - Update 2
Traveling with: Misty (Cavalier), Hanna (Undead Hunter), Joshua (Undead Hunter), Forrest (Paladin), Paja (Inquisitor)

Russell IV's first major quest was freeing Hendak. The paladins played carefully, but they outclassed the opposition. Next they got the Lilacor sword. While fighting some hobgoblins doing that, Misty got held. But a Lay on Hands by Forrest kept her alive long enough for the party to slay her enemies. The rest of the quest went without incident.

Since the DEX of Russell IV and Paja are so bad, we need to get them good shields ASAP. We also needed better amor, much of the party is still in splint/chain mail. So first we fight Viconia's fanatics to get their plate mail. Next we talk to the boy from Immesvale and go to Immesvale. The reason is if we talk to the mayor twice, talk to Maduff, the mayor once more and finally Maduff, Maduff will give us a +2 medium shield (Shield of the Lost). Paja will use that.

Next task was taking out the slavers in the moored ship. This is always a very tedious task, as the paladins have to carefully walk on that board in the sewers or get petrified. The actual combat went pretty well for Captain Haegan and his men. By this point we had the Stonefire and sword of flame, so of course the trolls were  no problem.

The next group with the 2 mages and the repeating prismatic spray trap is another matter. The party decided to wait in the hallway with the two cells and have Joshua pull the enemies to us, so we wouldn't all have to cross the trap. Joshua is immune to hold, confusion and charm, so seemed pretty safe to do so with him - this worked OK, but Misty got held again - we really need to get her some hold immunity. Once the slavers were dead, Hanna and Paja looted what they could. I've decided that if don't remember what trap is on a container, Russell IV will never open them - if no one can will just do without. We reported to Hendak and he was pleased.

We badly needed heal potions so we stopped by Thieve's guild - but no, the potions are in a locked chest and even with frost giant strength and DUHM Russell IV couldn't open them. However, we did make enough money that we could afford to buy all 10 of Watcher's Keep extra healing potions, so we did, and of course the potion and gem bags.

Now that we got some potions, we still need to get Misty hold immunity, so we tried to go to Trademeet. We got hit with the Suna Sune ambush - AI was more than enough to finish these guys, though Russell IV did do a true sight too.

Tried to head to Trademeet once more but then got the Remfeld ambush - well we helped him as well and returned him to his friends at the Harper Hold. On the way to the hold, got the vampire ambush where the two thieves attack as well as 4 muggers - all were defeated, and after selling the loot our gold is not bad. While here, we also defeated Droth for his full plate - finally the whole party is at least plate mail. We also defeated the pirates in the Sea's Bounty. So we got the sling of seeking for Russell IV. We also got stone to flesh scroll and protection from petrification, in preparation for our confrontation with the Trademeet genies. Ran out of time, so ended session here.

Carthusian made good progress last night, killing some lieutenants (cleric, fighter, thief, mage) before doing the same to Yaga Shura.

A Pocket Plane alter-ego Carthusian went in two GWW's while Tamoko and Angelo followed soon after Semaj held on a fair while before running out of stoneskins.

Jamis Tombelthen is the sole casualty at the oasis (enough cash and gear so saved time) while anything involving mercenaries or monks in Amkethran is rapidly sorted out. Vongoethe is left alone.

The final part of the night sees Carthusian run away from an Elder Orb. Despite 100% magic resistance the cause wounds ability is quicker than Firetooth GWW's. Plan b involves the cloak of mirroring and that proves entirely effective (so reflecting back is better than 100% in this instance).

A much briefer run tonight sees the drow woodcutter and his companions killed, not before getting Carthusian down to less than 30hp though; forcing him to run and hide while using lay on hands. The hidden enclave looks less than appealing - but the alternative is a brown dragon which is far worse.
