I'm glad Carthusian made it through. Onward to Balthazar!

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 26 {2} - (update 6)
Stiel, halfling assassin (Grond0) & Andal, human bounty hunter (Gate70)

A short session last night started with reporting in to Garren Windspear - at which point Gate70's game immediately crashed.  That meant that Andal was deprived of his 44,500 XP, but a dose of PW: console soon put that right.

After selling / storing items in Athkatla, the gruesome twosome made their way to Trademeet.  Two genies died in traps before the Khan ran round after Andal until he collapsed of an overdose of the Crimson Dart.  That allowed the purchase of the Cloak of Displacement, Ras and Belt of Inertial Barrier.

On to the Grove where the duo made rapid progress:
- the trolls outside the Troll Mound all collapsed as they chased Stiel through a string of traps.
- inside, Andal managed to make proper strategic use of his Otiluke traps - splitting up giant trolls for easy disposal.
- Kyland Lind & co got a few spells away, without posing any real danger.
- left the rakshasas for now.
- Dalok's pet druid caused the most problems by managing to target a call lightning on a stealthed Stiel (I think he originally saw him before being held by Celestial Fury and didn't lose focus when Stiel stealthed while he was inactive).  In response to a quiet plea from Gate70, Stiel made a very rare use of a healing potion.
- Andal went to talk to a druid friend, but entered a report of a missing personCernd.  Stiel told him not to be daft, but Andal couldn't be convinced he was there and eventually had to be shown the tattered rags remaining of Faldorn's body before admitting perhaps Cernd had been in the neighbourhood.

Back in Trademeet Raissa didn't have long to wait to get her skin graft reversed.  The tomb caused slightly more trouble - initial backstabs didn't do too much to the skeleton warriors and melee against them proved pretty fruitless.  Finally, Andal asked Stiel rather plaintively where Daystar had got to: moments later a sunray lit up the tomb ... and left only a few heaps of bones behind.

Stats:
Stiel, assassin L18, 85 HPs (incl. 7 from ioun stone), 376 kills
Andal, bounty hunter  L18, 80 HPs, 421 kills, 5 deaths
That last level means Stiel now has the option of using a potion of power to protect against PW: stun.

Just a quick note - Russell IV and his level 10 pally friends are still going. We were having an issue with heal potions, so our first level spells are sanctuary and heal. Interestingly, the lich in the City Gates was very easy for this team - apparently level 10 is high enough to dispel its buffs and of course with 6 paladins attacking the lich died pretty much instantly, despite his stoneskin. I distinctly remember being in here with a level 9 Keldorn, and he COULDN'T dispel its buffs, so it's good know that if level 10 inquisitor, then this lich is fair game.

We tried the same trick for the elemental lich in the bridge district, but our dispel had no effect - hmm, too high level. I turned off the AI and ran for the hills. We bought a undead scroll at a nearby temple, rested (to get rid of the gated fiend), and then Hanna took down this lich with said undead scroll by herself.

We finally got the D'Arnise Keep and solved the troll problems there. Due to our high AC and melee output, we didn't need anything other than a few heal potions and protection from evil. The hardest fight was in fact Glaicas, Misty had to run but right then Glaicas morale broke and he fell. While we were here, Russell IV finally got a magical melee weapon (Flail of Ages).

We are carefully considering our next move. With our save vs. spells at 8, we aren't particularly anxious to do the Tarnor fight or Guarded Compound just yet, but we are starting to run out of things to do. So going to fight the undead and spiders in the crypts, we need every scrap of experience we can get.

Cusp - dwarf swashbuckler (hour 11)

Cusp continued his journey through the Druid Grove:
- in contrast to the giant troll outside the Mound in the last session, those inside failed to cause any problems.
- Kyland Lind died of complications caused by the efreeti's stinking cloud.  His companions managed to catch Cusp in some insects, but none of them were able to complete a call lightning.
- Cusp bought the pick of Adratha's potions before going rakshasa hunting.
- talked to Cernd only to find that Cusp had not yet received a warning from Pauden of trouble in the Grove.  After tracking him down near the entrance, Cusp returned to Cernd and watched him tear Faldorn apart.
- back in Trademeet cleansed the tomb, though Cusp has not yet done the skinner murders so Tiris will have to wait a while for help.

There was still time after sorting out inventory to make a start on the de'Arnise Hold.  The trolls downstairs and outside caused no problems against the Blackblood / Belm combination, while the yuan-ti mage has just become a victim of a couple of traps.

Cusp - swashbuckler L16, 79 HPs (incl. 7 from ioun stone), 488 kills

Russell IV and his band of level 10 pally friends - update 5
Traveling with: Misty (Cavalier), Hanna (Undead Hunter), Joshua (Undead Hunter), Forrest (Paladin), Paja (Inquisitor)

Russell IV managed to find some things to do after all:

* Completed Maevar's Tasks, including slaying Rayic Gethras. The inquisitors were able to dispel his buffs, which translated into a quick death for him. When we took out Maevar, we encountered NO enemies ground level? All I could think of is somehow our protection from evil stopped them from spawning.
* Tried to find Montaron, but found an assassin for Xzar instead - tough luck. We also destroyed Prebek and his minions, an inquisitor dispel magic once again being devastating.
* A few battles in Crypts got us Kithix - we didn't fight all undead here, because Russell IV doesn't know the nature of the traps deeper in and he doesn't want to risk himself or his team unnecessarily.
* We obtained the illithium alloy for Sir Sarles, but he didn't like it. The Temple did though, and the helm of glory was a welcome upgrade for Misty, putting her CHA at 21. We also obtained real illithium from Neb, though we couldn't use it yet.
* Completed the first two tasks for Aran Linvail, and started the last one to obtain the mace of disruption.
* We can finally can forge the Improved Mace of Disruption for Misty, so we did so.
* We had to destroy the Fallen Paladins - we were clearly the superior force, though we did have 3 summons assisting us (Kithix, Berserker, Genie)

If possible, would like a level to possibly improve our save vs.spells before we engage Tarnor the Hatchetman. So next session will probably need to visit Windspear Hills.

Cusp - dwarf swashbuckler (hour 12)

There were no problems finishing off the remainder of the de'Arnise Hold. Most of the golems were helped on their way with the help of a trap each; Torgal got treated to three of them.  The iron golem's resistances meant traps didn't do much and it was primarily killed by repeated stealth attacks, while trolls and umber hulks were isolated and meleed.

On to Umar Hills where Cusp did the initial quests - being careful not to get into melee with a couple of shadow fiends who could hold him.  Helping protect a mage from a rogue golem got him to level 18 (he can now get over 90 HPs with a potion of power).  Before returning to Athkatla he picked up Valygar's body.

Back in the City Cusp headed to the Temple District, where it was quickly apparent that the inhabitants were blaming him for the glabrezu's earlier rampage.  With traps not working he had to rely on melee to kill the demon - a couple of criticals made that pretty simple though (thought I had a screen shot of that, but it appears not).

Inside the Guarded Compound the efreeti was still waiting.  Cusp threw up the berserk warrior just with the aim of setting a series of traps, but was surprised to find the warrior had made the efreeti run - a single arrow finished him off.  Time was then up for the session, so Sion and his gang will have to wait around a little longer.

Cusp - swashbuckler L18, 83 HPs (incl. 7 from ioun stone), 526 kills

@Grond0 - it must be so nice to have traps of your own! Russell IV and his band have no traps of their own, so instead they must walk bravely INTO enemy traps and just bash opponents heads in, but that's not very subtle.

Indeed - thief traps are pretty vicious. For other thief classes that helps to compensate for their difficulty in melee fighting, but swashbucklers have the option (at least at higher levels) of standing toe to toe with opponents as well - you're always spoilt for choice with a swashie!

Carthusian tries on the Big Metal Unit. Nice. Then he takes it off again.
(note, the big metal gun can't be used as monks are unable to use 2 handed weapons).

The death of a monk
It was all going so well. Balthazar was almost dead, and then he healed before popping over to the east.

Carthusian is foolish enough to follow, despite his injuries. Into his third GWW he feels another tug on his soul

Time for some Ravagering. Vague recollection it is immune to +3 weapons, not sure if +4 or +5 required.

Gate70 - Yes +4 weapons/ammo required. I recommend running and using a sling (takes a while) - you'll need ton of heal potions without the reflection shield. If you get into melee you can get into a no save unconscious, and of course that's bad with all those wandering bone blades..Since Corthief II did it surely Carthusian can too...

Hmm. All your predictions come true Corey. Well, the watch out for trouble ones.

Ravagered. Suspected as much before starting, managed not to get blocked in but went unconscious after a few minutes. Not sure I have a safe tactic for him without the reflection shield. Was only hitting for 4-5 damage each time so going to be a drawn out battle. & he was saving Mask at -2.

Candlekeep at some point...

Sad to hear that Gate70 - but all in all, I would say you had a great run. I was getting the same damage, but eventually I gulped a strength potion and used sling of seeking and that sped up the kill some, but yeah Corthief II battled for literally like 45 minutes real time before he won...lot of pausing too, to be sure he avoided both the bone blades and the Ravager melee

Afraid not - the last minute recollection of +4 was key. I had no +4 missiles, having not bothered to loot or purchase any. Another lesson to file away.

Presumably the Greenstone Amulet would protect against the sleep effect, so if you made sure you had it fully charged before combat it might give a monk a safe® option if you wanted to melee.

Nonetheless, that was a great run!

Oh Serg, I packratted everything apart from missiles. Still, next time...

edit1...
got myself trapped in 2nd time.
3/4/5 all had him near death with only 5 healing potions used but caught each time. Greenstone amulet and potions of magic shielding either do nothing or are dispelled, PfM is not dispelled but doesn't help.

I reckon using 1/2 of each GWW would be fairly safe. More experimentation later. Or maybe no GWW's, just in and out with a single hit.

edit2...
Good idea with the sling Serg, think that is a bonus merchant but could always console him in.

edit3...CRTL'ing it into the party
Neither bone blades or Ravager do anything on hit so it must be a scripted effect, same with the blade barrier as that is recast under AI but not when in the party.

edit4...
Just defeated him. GWW then in for 3-4 hits with a brief out-back taking about 1/2 a second for another 3-4 hits seems to work. Not sure how consistent it will be though.

That's an interesting thought. Gate70 you mind loading a save and seeing if the Greenstone Amulet does in fact, protect against the sleep effect? Whether it does (or doesn't) would be very useful for everyone on the board to know, if it's not too much trouble.

I believe he tested this already.

And I can't say the results are a surprise. The Ravager dispels on hit without a save. Were it not for the dispel, Greenstone Amulet charges and potions of magic shielding would both work. Because of the dispel, neither of them should.

The Ravager is a tough opponent for monks. They can fight him at range, but without The Relflex they're destined to take a beating. Melee is an even worse proposition, however. The Ravager's melee weapon applies Sleep (39) with a save v breath at -10. Monks have pretty good saves on balance, but breath is their weakness. Even a good path monk wearing BoIB + CoP+ Gaxx + Claw + Seldarine won't be able to make a -10 reliably.

Were I fighting The Ravager with a monk, I'd stay ranged: the bone blades are the lesser of evils here. I'd buff to 127% cold resistance, maintain my save v spells below -2 to prevent stun, and wear the BoIB for the 25% missle damage resistance. I'd keep Hardiness up as often as possible and get my missle AC as low as possible (Cloak of Displacement, Claw of the Kazgaroth, Cloak of the Shield, Shield Amulet, Gloves of Missle Snaring, Boots of Avoidance). I'd line up my extra healers and then wear him down at range with +4 bullet launched from the Sling of Seeking under potion of storm giant strength. That's a win. (Arriving at the battle with neither Everard nor +4 bullets , on the other hand, would call for a double quivering face palm in my opinion...)

Anyhoo: lesson learned, huh? Here's hoping the next monk makes it!

Best,

A.

@Alesia: I posted soon after Gate70's and at the time he simply said he packratted everything except +4 missiles. He's edited the post quite a bit since I read it the first time, I see his tests now. Still good to know. My response was of course based on his initial post, which had no tests...

Also thanks for the extra info - dispel on hit is nasty and save vs. breath at -10!! No wonder my melees don't do much against it. Maybe some paladin should hit it with Carsomyr and give the Ravager some its own medicine and dispel its buffs, see how it likes it...
