As usual, a fairly hectic start to BG2. Picked up Nalia, Anomen and Jan to fill out the initial party. The aim this time was to do a bit of gentle exploration in the city and get better equipped before taking on too many fights. Began by talking to Drini who I hadn't seen before; he sent me to fetch some drinks. I had most of them when a pickpocket, Scam, turned up and pinched one of them. If that was random it's a real pain. If not then I guess he will make another appearance in due course.
In the course of moving round the city overcame two sets of ambushers, rescuing Renfeld from the second - returned him to the harpers. Also got Jaheira cursed, so will need to deal with that fairly soon. Then will get Jan to test out his light fingers on a shop or two before setting off for the D'Arnise hold.

I am not in romance with Saerileth, probably due to the fact that she is Racist/Sizist?
I am wondering if the tomes that Tyr gives after helping at Watcher's Keep are still given if in friendship with Saerileth.[/b]
"Saerileth is a 15-year-old human paladin of Tyr. She hails from Mount Celestia in the Outer Planes. She is young, romanceable (for good-aligned humans, elves, and half-elves), and beautiful. She is complete through ToB, and she has quests and a flirt/chatpack. She brings with her three new areas for SoA, two SoA quests, and a ToB quest. Saerileth is a young woman of deep religious conviction and certainty. She has extensive voicing, banters, and interjections. And Saerileth will love you like no other. We hope you will play her mod repeatedly."

You forgot the bit about the charisma requirement, Iroumen.
Yes, I think that is 15. By using the ugly stick, Fugit's charisma is currently 25, so I don't think that charisma is a problem. Further playing of the game has made me certain that she is besotted with Eldoth.
There is still the question of whether I get those tomes after completing Watcher's Keep. Obviously the charisma tome is of little value, but being a cleric, Fugit would really like the extra wisdom.
If anybody knows, please inform me.

Never tried to 'not' meet the standards for this mod. Kind of because it was fun once, but some of the initiators make no sense: You meet in front of the Order of the Radiant Heart (well, that makes sense). You go inside and she says, 'finally we get to the Order of the Radiant Heart' or somesuch (which makes no sense because you met right in front of it) and when you go outside again you immediately get a cutscene where you have to slay something really big (which makes no sense again). The voiceover was a bit stuttery on my pc but the overall content was quite alright except for some other petpeeves I guess. Good for one run through at least.

Completely different feel in frienship mode. A bit more believable.
The instant love in romance mode is not quite right, and since I got engaged after going out with my then girlfriend after a month, I do understand almost instant love.
(Coming up to Pearl Anniversary this week)
The interaction between her and Eldoth makes me nervous that she might run off with him, taking equipment with her.
What I am wondering is whether she is worth a place in the party as a friend. Obviously you don't know, but thanks for your feedback.
Does anyone know the trigger for Jan's quest. The messenger hasn't turned up!
Edit (Just had to wait a long time)
Is there a trigger other than time for Amber to get kidnapped?
Diary of Fugit
I have been travelling in the countryside gaining gold from the keep and installing another Battleguard of Tempus as the cleric there! (Pity the Divine remix didn't anticipate that happening, conversation with him didn't fit the facts), but I suppose it could only happen with a number of mods installed.
Dermin picked a fight and died. Later Elminster turned up with a harper pin.
Jan had a family problem which we tried to solve, but only made a temporery fix unfortunately.

Marcia is still struggling to find her feet in this version of BG2. Intention was to use some thieving skills to upgrade equipment. However, one of the mods appears to have introduced the possibility of failure into stealing from shopkeepers (as with pickpocketing). In principle I agree with this restriction, but it came as a bit of a shock for someone with 250 skill. Still, made some judicious acquisitions before setting out for the De'Arnise Hold.
On the road survived the ambush by orogs, slavers and trolls unscathed, but on arrival at the hold area was accosted by a group of 7 or 8 trolls even before I entered the castle. Did manage to kill them all, but Yoshimo was toasted by a flame strike from the spirit troll accompanying them. Decided to return to the city to get him raised - damn forgot to pick up his equipment and it had disappeared by the time I returned.
Before going back to help Nalia thought I might indulge in a bit of cheese and get a familiar for Marcia. Probably would have been better not to do that in the city as the cowled wizards arrived in strength more vicious than ever

I'm not sure to be honest - I have less experience with BG2 than BG1 as a whole and much less with a modded version. My feeling is that SCS II is certainly at least partly responsible (the spirit trolls for instance at the De'Arnise Keep are listed as one of its attributes). However, I wasn't sure if there was something else, e.g. Solaufein, responsible as well - for instance for the fact that all bandits can cast spells and all muggers start off invisible.wise grimwald wrote...
Is it SCS II that is making your enemies so much more powerful?

I've got a bit of an ethical dilemma here. I assumed that Jaheira's failure to talk to me was a bug following stoning (which used to be quite common, particularly on unpatched games). Therefore I felt justified in force-recruiting her back into the party. However, at this point I discovered that she had actually not just been stoned, but feebleminded as wellGrond0 wrote...
unfortunately Jaheira was stoned in the original attack and now won't talk to me. Fair do's with losing Yoshimo's equipment - no-one else to blame there, but I'm reluctant to see Jaheira's go down the pan as well. Need to think about how I might recover that in the next session.

Obviously I can now heal her, but is that breaching the spirit of a no-reload game given that I have effectively cheated in order to find out that she needed healing?
It seems to me that you are not breaching the spirit of a no-reload game. Roleplay your characters: they can clearly see Jaheira is a drooling vegetable, the game engine should let you gather the same information.
Tweaking the software to correct for tactical/role-play errors (oops I forgot to do X, let's just fix it) is not in the spirit of no-reload; tweaking to correct for an imperfect engine (I want to do X, I should be able to do X, but I can't) seems no different than tweaking via a mod.
Play on! I enjoy reading this thread.

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't continued previously, but since people are suggesting I should do what I want to do I can only give in gracefully
Heading off to the De'Arnise Hold again there was an initial bandit ambush, but the word seems to have gone round that Marcia is not to be messed with and they ran away without even attacking. On arrival the party was greeted by 5 trolls together with a couple of spectral trolls in support. The latter didn't seem to have any particular abilities and the ambush was beaten off without much trouble. Finally - a chance to actually get inside the castle!
Worked through the trolls without too much trouble - even a couple of spirit trolls didn't quite manage to cause any casualties. Unfortunately decided to go down to the cellar before completing other things. In the final battle Jaheira's chaotic commands wore off at the wrong moment and she was confused by the umber hulk elder. Leaving her to her fate the others got Torgal and a giant troll into the adjoining room and shut the door to kill the opposition in detail. While gently healing the party went onto the roof, but this triggered a map alteration so that all the remaining treasure and monsters disappeared (including 2 of the flail heads, a nice axe etc). Also missed out on the opportunity to play tag with golems - Marcia would have particularly enjoyed hiding, giving the iron golem a clout and ducking back out of the doorway.
Edit1: Back in the city helped Hendak at the Copper Coronet. Having been conscious of limited raise dead ability at the De'Arnise hold walked up to the temple on the roof only to be attacked by a bunch of invisible muggers. With an unfortunate reflex cast a purge invisibility spell and then had to leg it sharpish as those spoil-sport wizards teleported in. Feeling a bit tired went for a rest and then warmed up for the new day by taking out the obstreporous party in the inn next door before a relaxing trip to the circus. Back in the slums visited the temple as before, but let the muggers attempt their worst this time without trying out any spells. Then undertook a head-on assault on the remaining slavers (slightly more controllable than using the back door).
Returning via the sewers picked up a nice big sword (pity no-one in the party can use it) then headed off for the temple district to see Anomen knighted. Coming back from there was ambushed by a large group of bandits. Nalia was fried by a flame strike, but although a couple of unholy blights caused some concerns, everyone else survived. Then Jan had a little family difficulty and we spent a bit of time sorting that out for him.
Edit2: Spent a while trying to find the ingredients for Drini. This involved taking out the mercenaries in Delosar's inn and quite a bit of walking round. In the course of that Nalia was summoned to her father's funeral and the party explored the graveyard. That could have been painful as I momentarily forgot the danger giant spiders can pose in SCS II, but fortunately Yoshimo was the only one they had time to chew up. After being raised decided to have a night's rest before returning to Drini, but were intercepted by Isaea before we could get there and had to take time out to rescue her!
End of Marcia
Regrettably I did eventually manage to finish the quest for Drini and took on the consequences. I won't describe the battle in detail to allow others to savour it for themselves, but suffice it to say I needed far more magic protection than I had (and also didn't use what I did have very effectively). Rather annoyingly Marcia was finished off by magic missiles despite using the amulet of shielding - which clearly does not do what it says on the tin!

Nalia is being kept as a conjurer. Her thieving skills are useless, but her mage skills are great.

I have upset the folk in the Umar Hills, probably by not being there at the right time!
Amber pas kidnapped eventually, and did not need rescuing. I wonder, is there anything that I can do with the soul gems?

Jan has far less thief points and probably won't become more than a utility thief for traps/locks and detecting illusions. In a large party, the extra firepower he provides as a mage may be useful, in a smaller group I'd say one single-class mage is enough. In a small party, on the other hand, you might often use a more tactical approach, which is where Amber as a stealthy thief can shine. I've played a duo (R/C plus Imoen later) with her once and greatly enjoyed setting up ambushes, traps and backstabbing with her. In a large party, however, you might not want to focus on one character that much, hence it might be hard to play out her full potential there.
Regarding the soul gems, take a look around the basement of where you found them.

I have already picked up everything that looked useful.
Are you refering to Ymmyrt's Journal?
If so, the problem that I have is where to put the soul gems?
Edit
Problem solved. Thanks for the help.
Have left the area, dropped off Jan and am picking up Anomen. Then went to the Windspear Hills, and defeated every enemy that we met up to Firkraag. Was amazed at how easy Conster was. Must now decide whether to take Firkraag on now or later.

True, I am a sucker for punishment. I haven't actually ever completed SOA, even on vanilla settings, which does sort of complicate things. However, I must admit I'm thinking of using some cheesier tactics in future, e.g. making use of scroll of magic protection (if I'd permitted that it would have saved my last run). Just to warm my cheese up I'm currently going through BG1 with Drizzt in my party. I haven't used him before other than a brief abortive attempt at the Drizzt saga itself - having a one-man army on your side certainly speeds things upoyzar wrote...
Grond0 you keep trying to play through without actually having done a full playthrough with your current modset (at least it seems that way as you are continously surprised by new things popping up), that is nothing sort of amazing persitence.

I decided to take on Firkraag and won head to head.
Nalia reduced his magical resistance and used pierce magic etc whilst Anomen used smite evil.
I just used summon insect swarm as did Jahiera later on.
I had to get Saerileth to keep out of the fight as she is far too fragile.
On exit, I was asked to deal with flooding problems at the D'Arnise keep and to go to see Anomen's father. As the keep is in the right general direction, I decided to sort that problem out on the way.

Caddy has completed BG1 - using Drizzt in the party made this pretty simple. This time managed to get all the Bhaal powers I wanted and completed his collection of tomes - transferred in with 19 Str, 20 Dex, 20 Con, 20 Int, 19 Wis, 4 Cha.

I was thinking of starting with an inquisitor + aerie from bg2 only. I have not played any non-reload before, so was wondering if this was possible. Maybe i should include immoen too for traps and locks. What sort of proficiencies do you need for this? 2 handed sword at some point, but is it really the best until you defeat firkaag? The vampires in firkaags dungeon are going to be rough... I was thinking about longbow two stars in addition to 2 handed weapon style and 2 handed sword, but some form of dualwielding might be better until firkag is down, as belm is rather easy to aquire, however that require at least 5 stars, another alternative is axe for azureedge... Stonefire is also available early and it is possible to use that + shiled or something. Azureedge should be able to take down iron golems.

Hmph, Corey got there first.
With a small party, you will level up quickly, so it is possible. You have Aerie and so have immunity to level drain which will help against the vampires. I would advise doing a few easy quests first to build up your experience. If you do D'Arnise Keep early on, you can give Aerie the Flail of Ages and a decent sling. Imoen is not the best choice as a thief, though by all means have her for completing the dungeon. I would recommend Jan, as that way you have both a decent thief and a magic user. A fire weapon is needed for the keep. Crossbow from watcher's keep, flame sword, or suchlike.
If on the other hand, you use a two man party, then use Aerie to locate traps, then your character will have to lead the way to spring traps. Make sure that Aerie is well out of the way at that time. (Fireballs, lightning etc) Aerie has low constitution and so is not good for springing traps.
Forgot to give link for death of Firkraag.

It is indeed very easy if you pick him up early on. By choice I pick him up at the end so as not to make it too easy, but if you're wanting a quick run through, that's the way to do it.

Also Jan vs Imoen, isn't your sister a better 3rd wheel than some random gnome? I have not actually completed the Aerie romance before so I don't actually know...
As for daystar, getting that very early on a non-reload seems rather risky, though i suppose it would just cost one protection from undead scroll... Also turn undead will not be so high since i plan to do this quest as one of the first ones...
Also why is there a mind shield icon on my character? Because he is protected from hold and charm?
