Thanks, I meant the Ring of Regeneration though, not the Rod of Resurrection... I'm pretty sure you can only get the ring once in Spellhold.

Edit, you were right about Ribald having one though, he wears a ring of regen that can be pickpocketed in vanilla, guess I'll keep this new one.

Lucky the Wild Mage - Update 4

Lucky has solved Trademeet problems - however, it came at great cost to the party. When battling the genies, Korgan got petrified - we had just killed the head genie and the genies disappeared then Korgan's body exploded (possibly melf's arrow). Korgan is permanently killed. We also lost his items. This is what we lost:

* Full Plate and protection ring +1
* Helm of Balduran
* +2 small shield
* Stonefire (+3 axe)
* Haegan's Axe (I think that's what it is called, it's Tarnor's axe, the one that returns after each use)
* Giantkin Warhammer

Lucky wants more meatshields, so he will probably recruit the Halfling fighter in the Umar Temple ruins.

It's how he'd have wanted to go.

& the axe is something like Hangards.

Lucky the Wild Mage - Update 5
Traveling with: Jaheira, Mazzy, Minsc, Yoshimo, Aerie

Lucky's choice of having Mazzy replace Korgan is working well so far. The team solved the Umar Hills Temple problem with little difficulty, though they did skip the shadow dragon for the moment.

Some quests were done for the Temple - we gave an alloy to Sir Sarles who refused to use it, so we gave it to the Temple instead. We wanted to use the real illithium for the IMoD instead, so we did the necessary steps to do that and forged it.

We've been in a number of ambushes, including vampire ones, but have done well so far. Jaheira nearly got leveled drained to death but we had her pull away so she's OK now. We've in a number of possibly hard fights, but every time Jaheira's insect plague has won the battle decisively for us.

We failed to find Montaron, but we did find Xzar an assassin, not that he wanted that...we obtained the berserker horn, pretty easy with a now good thief like Yoshimo. We also obtained Kangaxx parts, but we haven't tried to get the ring yet, as we were waiting to forge the IMoD (Improved Mace of Disruption) first. In fact, after resting, obtaining the Gaxx ring will be our next stop.

Party Status:
Jaheira - level 9 fighter/level 12 druid, 76 HP, 83 kills, Shade Lich
Mazzy - level 10 fighter, 91 HP, 21 kills, Shade Lord (pretty fitting she got the kill shot on Shade Lord, considering what he had done to her and her former party)
Minsc - level 11 ranger, 95 HP, 178 kills, Bone Golem
Yoshimo - level 14 bounty hunter, 84 HP, 62 kills, Glaicas
Lucky - level 12 wild mage, 70 HP, 76 kills, Mencar Pebblecrusher
Aerie - level 10 cleric/level 11 mage, 17 kills, Skeleton Warrior

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 28 - (update 2)
Focus, human totemic druid (Grond0) & Diffy, human invoker (Gate70)

A couple of mini-sessions has seen this duo make a bit of serene progress in BG2.

The circus was followed by the Copper Coronet.  A trip through the sewers then led to more slavers.  Captain Haegan and his guards were assaulted by totemic summons and insect plague.  Diffy then took over - using vampiric touch and 4 lots of LMD to get HPs high enough to eliminate risk from the acid trap; then stinking cloud, web, cloudkills and skull traps ensured that the slaver mages and their archers would cause no trouble.

Stats (incl. BG1):
Focus, totemic druid 12, 63 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 67 kills
Diffy, invoker 11, 44 HPs, 63 kills, 0 deaths

Making good progress, Gate, Grond and Corey.

Salek and party do a few tasks for the shadow thieves, but Aran has no amulet of power to help us against the vampires; instead he gives us the cutthroat short sword and golden girdle, which are good, but we need a way to protect ourselves from level drainers (we haven't found a scroll of ProMW, even though I doubt vampire claws should count as "weapons").

As if to drive home this point, an encounter with Parisa the vampire gets Salek drained of 3 levels (more on this later) Anomen started casting NPP on him, but the vampire's dialogue interrupted it, arrrgh!. Lassal is beaten off before draining anyone, but there are certain encounters in the vampire lair that will be problematic without AoP or ProMW (i'm thinking of a hasted Tanova and Improved Bodhi herself...). Alas, Salek needs two more fighter levels before he can cast Boon of Lathander again which is a great combat boost and protects from level drain.

Well, since vampires are on hold let's take on the slaver lords in the temple district (I was a little overconfident here). Failed to interrupt Sion's timestop (he's prebuffed with spell trap and we'd need a 14th level mage with ruby ray to remove that, Keldorn's dispel wouldn't have worked even if Sion wasn't running SI:Abjuration).

Posted Image

Keldorn gets turned into a squirrel by Sion's sphere of chaos (had time to drink a potion of invulnerability, it didn't save him), which everyone else has run out of the area of. Fortunately squirrelification from the sphere only lasts one round, and our Paladin is soon back in the fight. The tide seems to turn when Nalia's Chaos spell successfully confuses Sion!

Posted Image

Again, I do something silly: Rather than seize this opportunity to finish the wizard off I concentrate on the Cleric whose Aerial servants are beating Anomen up (they move really fast with aTweaks and also entangle on hit).

Posted Image

Stalman managed to heal the Minotaur in spite of being zapped with the wand of frost (Sion took no damage from the wand, Protection from Energy in his buffs I guess). I kept my fighters out of blade barrier range because we were all malisoned. Just after we'd finished off the cleric and minotaur, guess what happened?

Posted Image

Sion's confusion wore off! Worse yet Salek's Chaotic Commands and Death Ward also wore off (I shouldn't go into a major battle with buffs half expired), now Salek has only 86hp (I didn't turn the difficulty down for hp rolls), thus he could be disabled by a PW:Stun and finished off while helpless.

This brought out an unexpected cowardly side in the holy crusader Salek, who stayed out of Sion's sight range as the encounter wore on: Sion rebuffed with a spell trigger and cast a meteor swarm (prompting us to move to another corner of the room), two horrid wiltings - one on Valygar and one on Keldorn (they were both lucky to save and survive) and summoned a mordy sword before we finally got him.

Posted Image

And then Salek stepped into the acid trap. :pinched: It's my first playthrough this year and it shows...

I was wondering why Salek took so much damage from the trap (3/4 of his hp) then realized he was fatigued from his trip to the temple to get his levels restored... fatigue imposes a luck penalty which, among other things, increases the damage you suffer.

The moral is: Don't fight when your character is tired and don't play when you're tired.

Guarded compound treasure: Belm, Tuigan bow, helm of Balduran (which gives Salek exactly 91 hp,  just out of PW:Stun range), robe of the evil archmagi from Sion (we'll keep this, who knows, Edwin might end up in our party someday) the wand of paralyzation, and other sellable stuff.

After a rest in the late Pimlico's home (not even gonna risk an encounter with bandits, with the state my party's in). Ryan Trawl appears and informs Anomen of his knighthood test in two days, well that's time enough to return this gem to Haer'Dalis...

Planar Prison, I carelesslly killed the slave gnome while interrupting one of the mage's casting with my wand of frost (I was too lazy to go through the rock-scissors-paper debuff this time). Strangely enough, no reputation lost.

Posted Image

Karma might be on it's way though! Valygar scouting ahead finds three Yuan Ti mages (15th level with SCS, so Keldorn only has half a chance of dispelling their buffs, and they've got a 70% chance of dispelling ours) accompanying a mage thrall (don't know her level, higher than us I'll bet) and it's an awkward narrow passage to approach them by... this could be my last entry.

In a short update (sorry for all the novel-length posts), disaster strikes (it was the Yuan-ti mages, I knew it would be).

Battle opens with Keldorn using a crossbow bolt of lightning to disrupt one of the snakes casting true sight.

Posted Image

He immediately follows with a dispel magic but only one mage is affected (these snakes use mantle, only Valygar and Nalia - but she's no fighter - have +4 weapons and these won't remove the stoneskins quickly enough).

Tried out the horn of blasting, didn't realize it was centered on the user and affects PC's, Nalia got stunned for two rounds (I knew things were about to go pear-shaped here).

One of the snakes shot a prismatic spray at me, which I run out of the radius of (one of the reasons to leave the boots of speed on the PC). Keldorn has already slain the one who got his stoneskin dispelled, but took a lot of damage from the fighter Yuan-Tis (these guys are also improved, but not nearly as annoying). Nalia's stun wears off and she casts Chaos, successfully confusing one other mage.

The remaining mage casts flesh to stone on Valygar (I saw this coming and I could've dropped all his inventory items, but that would be an abuse of the pause button), then shatters him with a melf meteor.

Posted Image

Not only have we lost a good NPC here, we lost all his equipment. Notably, helm of defense, both rings of regen (I'd put them on him for healing), cloak of sewers (the other source of regeneration), staff of fire (it's nice to give fighters fireshields), Namarra, Dwarven Thrower (if we'd wanted to recruit Korgan...) and dragon slayer. Also, we will never be able to do the planar sphere quest.

Screw memorizing magic missiles (they're good for spell interruption, but globes are always the last spell protection remaining, so no mage can be interrupted anyway), I need protection from petrification on all frontliners.

I'm kinda hoping the warden ends my run now. I'll try but I can't see it succeeding from here anyway.

@Polytope - I'm sorry to hear of Valygar's destruction. I'm surprised you didn't open the planar sphere when you had Valygar in your party - that's what I do, even if I don't intend to go in right then...

@Polytope - several months ago, I lost Minsc in this very same battle against the very same spell (it's still in the records here I think). And Warden did end the run for me 5 minutes later - he also died, but I was so shaken with the loss of Minsc I really didn't want to continue.
Afaik aTweaks elemental shouldn't Entangle you on hit - it's Grab what they use - they're terribly annoying to deal with.
Anyhow, regardless of what you choose to do, it's (was?) a wonderful run. (I'm waiting for next IR and SCS25 to start my own).
As for Randomizer + Ring of Regen - Randomizer afaik removes the one from Ribald. I'm not sure about the other, iirc when I used it last time it was in Spellhold statue challenge.

I agree with others while feel sorry of your loss, Polytope. I know, it's hard to lose a character you like but Corey, for example, has vast experience with NPC's chunking and nonetheless succeeding in the end... Just don't give up, aside from Korgan there is Mazzy - a wonderful NPC if you ask me and, I think, Valygar wouldn't object of such substitute (they are in good terms with each other if in the same crew).

And keep a Wand of Cloudkill for those Yuan-Ti mages at the ready from now on... They just don't deserve a fair fight, imo...

btw... why you put both rings of regeneration on Valygar? I'm sure you know that regeneration rates from items don't stack...

My sympathies on the loss of Valygar. But like the others, I see no reason why this should end Salek's run. Don't give in to despair: seize the day, embrace life, and continue to kill people.

Best,

A.

Btw. Don't apologize for the length of your posts, Polytope. I'm enjoying them, and I'm fair certain I'm not alone.

Thanks all. I should have opened the sphere, but entering the sphere and "knowing" not to touch the instrument panel yet was too much metagaming for me.

I wasn't meaning to quit after the loss of Valygar, I just doubt this run will last much longer. We beat the Warden anyway, he was kinda easy for a high level F/M.

With the planar sphere closed to us we basically have no choice but to do Vamps or Firkraag next (I want Carsomyr before tackling beholder cult).

Vampires: PC and Keldorn have no protection from level drain, Nalia has no protection from magic weapons spell, Korgan is immune to level drain when berserk, but we haven't got a +3 axe or hammer that he could hit the more powerful vampires with... Also, we need to join Viccy to have Korgan in the party (current rep 19).

Firkraag: Without the helm of defense and ring of fire resistance (I was wrong in my last post, I actually lost the RoFR, still got one ring of regeneration) I have no way to give our fighters 70-90% fire resistance (by potion) after Firkraag dispels their protection from fire (which he will). Keldorn has the dragon helm, but couldn't do this fight alone.

Also it's no longer really a "no-reload" since I didn't save before quitting in the Inn last night, I've got an autosave from moments before, but it's a technicality. Might give Firkraag a shot anyway...

@Polytope: This kind of thing has come up before - the general consensus is that since you aren't reloading to get a different result (e..g, your character didn't die, no one got chunked, etc.), you just forgot to save, it is acceptable to re-load from whatever save you DO have and go from there.

Best of luck against Firkraag...

Lucky the Wild Mage - Update 6

By selling the spear of the unicorn, we had just barely enough to buy the shield of balduran. This left us with less than 1000 gold, but we will get lots of loot from a successful completion of the Unseeing Eye Quest, so we headed there.

When doing this quest, I was extremely careful this time to NOT take the rod out of the sewers and give it back to the avatar of amaunator. Absolutely everything went according to plan this time, and thus no deaths. The large group of undead by the dexterity gauntlets, Minsc soloed with a pro undead scroll. For the blind priests, Yoshimo scouted their position and we threw everything we had a them: silences, stinking cloud, cloudkills, fireballs, web, greater malison, etc. - the priests never even saw us since we started this attack just out of their range.

As is my usual preference, I am hanging on to the dragon halberd. The reason why is I usually prefer to make Mazzy a halberd user, as you don't get a natural one until Sarevok. But I'd like to get some use of halberds in SoA. Next level Mazzy can get a proficiency in halberds and use that instead of Tasheron's Bow.

Solving the Skinner murders and helping out Dushai should give Mazzy level 12, so we will try those next session.

This may refer to a bug in vanilla that items with an identical regeneration rate do stack, even though others don't.  I don't know whether this has been fixed recently, but I expect polytope doesPosted Image.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 28 - (update 3)
Focus, human totemic druid (Grond0) & Diffy, human invoker (Gate70)

The session started by using the proceeds from the slaver ship to pay off Gaelan Bayle.  After reporting to Aran Linvail the duo started the Mae'Var tasks and then went to avenge Mook.

On the way to the Bridge District the Suna Seni ambush was quickly dealt with.  The items from that came in handy when Focus found he'd been rather more generous than usual to a bunch of muggers, as well as some more left behind by Hareishan snacking on some thieves.  Diffy demonstrated his superior intelligence by coming out of maze within a round of picking up the berserker horn.

The Guild Contact should have been easy, but Jaylos got scared and ran out of the area.  There was no sign of him - possibly he'd actually died from spirit snake poison, but the game wasn't recognizing that.  A replacement Jaylos was consoled in and killing him resulted in the Contact appearing to tell the duo where to go next.  Before going there the duo relied on their stoneskins to keep the Rune Assassins at bay while solving the skinner murders.

Up to this point Diffy had been far more disciplined in her use of magic than my characters tend to be.  However, to allow her more freedom to manoeuvre a magic license was paid for before reporting back to Aran.

Then on to the Graveyard District.  The first stop was with Pai'Na.  Entering invisibly Diffy was able to fireball one group of spiders appearing, while the other was quickly eaten by insects.  Then on to vampire HQ, where a series of summons dealt with the vampires and their companions.  One of them did demonstrate the nasty vampire domination on Diffy, but Focus had taken the precaution of using chaotic commands this time, so just had to persuade the summons to stop attacking Diffy.  The only real problem was with Tanova; summons depleted her spells and would have taken care of her easily enough, but she managed to disappear into the wall at one point.  Diffy's cloudkill got her to reappear, but at the cost of killing or enraging various summons.  As a result Diffy got attacked and drained and Focus ended up having to finish the job himself in melee.

Bodhi will be seen off at the start of the next session.

Stats (incl. BG1):
Focus, totemic druid 12, 63 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 99 kills
Diffy, invoker 9 (under level drain), 43 HPs, 76 kills, 0 deaths

Misclicks are awful (especially if you're talking to Mae'var )

I thought an in-character way to lower rep would be for Korgan to drunkenly punch a nobleman on his way out of the coronet; it didn't work, no rep lost and Joluv also turned hostile (doesn't really matter, he doesn't sell the defender of Easthaven in my game and I've already brought Everard's morning star).

Salek returns to the windspear hills; this is my first time facing the vampires with their new abilities, they're interesting. Keldorn is really useful here because they regularly turn invisible.

Relied on AC buffs against the Vamps (potion of absorption for PC), only Keldorn got hit and drained. The ancient vampire, whom Korgan couldn't hit, was stunned with the wand of paralyzation.

Result of the attack on Firkraag (lol):

Posted Image

If you think I got two characters perma killed... you're wrong, I dismissed Viccy after she was done casting some buffs because I knew she wouldn't survive (she's only 9th level, and no girdle of fortitude for her either, Valygar had that).

I could've saved Anomen (and maybe prevented any deaths) by using the rod of resurrection as a healing wand, but that's too cheesy for me.

The problems started when Firkraag interrupted Nalia's breach, he then turned out to have several stoneskin spells (I haven't found any arrows of dispelling even if we had a bow user). Made his save against feeblemind too. The dragon had plenty of time to debuff us all with remove magic and breach, potions of fire resistance were used but without other buffs I kept getting my (mostly low level) party knocked out with wing buffets (used a potion of magic shielding for Salek here).  Lost Nalia when her stoneskins run out letting Firkraag hit her once and then finish her off with a 2*melf minor sequencer. Korgan died (even though I ran him out of melee range when injured) from the delayed damage when enrage wore off. Keldorn got wing buffeted unconscious into a corner and killed.

However, when it was only PC and Firkraag left standing, he turned out to have run out of remove magic and breach spells, without any ranged attacks except magic missile and melfs (and his breath, which I was immune to) I was able to finish him off with hit and runs.

Conclusion: My party composition sucks (the NPC's themselves are fine, but not effective as a group), I really should have two arcane casters for the tougher Ch 2 encounters - last game I rolled over the packs of Yuan Ti mages and suffered no deaths in any of the dragon fights. Think I'll restart and take Aerie along this time. Oh, and if I use Valygar I'll change his racial enemy to Yuan-Ti (not that a hit or damage bonus vs mages is useful since they die quickly anyway when debuffed, it just seems... appropriate).

First of all I disagree there are no good halberds - the dragon halberd is +3 for example and does 13 base damage, that's pretty decent. The halberd is range 2 - this means in tight areas like dungeons, having the 3rd melee use a halberd will actually work, as the halberd user can reach right over the melees using 1-hand weapons. If Mazzy were using a 1 hand weapon, she often wouldn't be able to reach enemies in tight areas. Also, in BG 2 and ToB, melee does more damage than ranged, so with Mazzy using the halberd, we will just kill things faster than if she were using a bow.

I"m sorry to hear the end of your run, good luck with your next one.

Lucky the Wild Mage - Update 7
Traveling with: Jaheira, Minsc, Mazzy, Yoshimo, Aerie

Lucky solved the skinner murders, but he failed to capture the murderer. He also decided to help Raelis Shai. Our first challenge was dealing with Mekrath - Minsc was given the honors of soloing the dangerous mage, after being properly being buffed of course. Next dangerous group was a large group of Umber Hulks - luckily a cloudkill from Aerie left only a single one - not too bad to deal with now. We got the bard's gem and returned to the playhouse.

Once we got there, we found out this gem is actually a planar gem - but the troop gets kidnapped, so we have to rescue them. This planar was very strange and dangerous, but there was only one death in the entire area, and that was our initial arrival, Mazzy got killed by a finger of death spell - Minsc was very upset, guess he forgot we have rod of resurrections to deal with this kind of problem - and yes Mazzy returned and the rest was clockwork.

The group also dealt with Panaii - only a single fireball was needed to greatly whittle down the spiderlings - success! The ioun stone went to Yoshimo for now, but it will eventually end up on Imoen - the spell immunity was memorized by Lucky.

Lucky decided that the shadow dragon needed to be taken care of, so the team headed to Umar Hills to change spell sets, rest, and proceed to Thaxy's lair. While we did snares and summons, we lost most of our snares due to a summon that went hostile. Lucky was certain the team could could still win. His plan was 4 x lower magic resistance, 2 x doom and enfeeblement - this worked! Yoshimo died (not chunked though), and Aerie was both confused and heavily level drained, however she wandered away from the battle so that was OK. Lucky then tried a blind - it worked too! Fantastic! He quickly brought the people left away from Thaxy, and switched to range wewapons - Thaxy could do nothing.

Aerie eventually lost her level drains and also regained control of herself - she was furious at Thaxy and used her lightning bolt wand for the first time - killing the foul beast!
Posted Image

The team also took care of Bodhi. Summons weakend Tanova, Minsc soloed Lassal (by staying off the traps and using improved mace of disruption), the ambush at lower level defeated by a heavily buffed party, and Bodhi herself wiped out by Yoshimo's traps and snares.

So we will be headed to Brynnlaw next session with 1800 gold to our name...Lucky has a hole in his pocket so that if he loses his gold in a surge it will only do minimal damage. We won't get much in Ust Natha but I think that's okay for this run.

Jaheira, level 10 fighter/level 12 druid, 77 HP, 111 kills, Shade Lich
Minsc, level 13 ranger, 101 HP, 277 kills, Kangaxx the Demi-Lich
Mazzy, level 12 fighter, 97 HP, 43 kills, Shade Lord
Yoshimo, level 15 bounty hunter 86 HP, 83 kills, Bone Golem
Lucky, level 13 Wild Mage, 78 HP, 104 kills, Mencar Pebblecrusher
Aerie, level 11 cleric/level 11 mage, 42 HP, 40 kills, Thaxxllyssyia

btw, I'm a bit confused by this: //Aerie eventually lost her level drains and also regained control of herself// Does that means that Thaxy's level drains are temporal and no need of restoration spells to deal with?

Just a quick note that Lucky the Wild Mage has made it out of Spellhold, and will shortly leave Brynnlaw with Saemon Havarian. Things were pretty straightforward here, with our only death being Jaheira got killed by the mindlflayer guarding the book. She wasn't chunked though, so a RoR charge got her back to speed. We were able to persuade Lonk not to hurt us. The battle with Irenicus lasted for a little while, and he did a horrid wilting which badly hurt the party, but we spent a round to heal then finished him up. The murderers and Yoshimo ended up being no trouble.

Killian - gnome barbarian (update 1)

After a quick trip through the sword coast, Killian has started his adventures in Athkatla by surviving the dungeon - that's not hard for a barbarian willing to rest as much as he wants (as Killian did).  The use of a potion of firebreath allowed him to finish off Ulvaryl before she could decide to flap away.

Here's his character record on exit:
