Killian - gnome barbarian (update 2)
Killian put the circus to rights and gave Hendak the keys to the Copper Coronet - buying Stonefire and Azuredge from Bernard.
He thrashed the Suna Seni ambush on the way to Watcher's Keep. There were no vampiric wraiths there, so Killian had no real problems in clearing the first level - there was lots of running and shooting against the statues, apart from those too large to fit through doorways who could be picked off at leisure.
The loot from there was enough to allow Killian to pay Gaelan Bayle off.

While I could recount how Lucky's party did in the City of the Caverns, or the few Underdark battles including killing a Balor (used finger of death after lowering magic resistance), all that really matters is when the party explored the southern cavern.
I did put protection from petrification and death ward on Lucky before entering, but thinking about it now maybe an anti-magic ray got rid of his buffs, in which case he would easily die to the petrification/death rays of the beholders. Maybe I could have done a Spell Immunity to protect his buffs, abjuration perhaps? Not sure...in any case, a beholder kills Lucky and there goes my first and last Wild Mage.

RIP Lucky. Aerie will miss you.
What's Next: I've never been a F/M/C so thought I would give it a whirl. I'm not too keen on soloing that class, but certainly don't want a full party which would slow down his leveling drastically. So instead will do a compromise and roll two friends to travel with him, to protect him at the same time maybe letting him level at a bearable rate. Coming soon...

Sorry to hear that Corey, but well done for getting him that far.
Thanks Grond0! I was surprised how far he got on my first attempt, and he didn't appear to die from a surge so that's all well and good. I ran into another nasty surge, at least it could be one if I were solo, horror. I was in the gnome village, buffed with stoneskin and the surge made Jaheira run in fear. Wasn't fighting, so all was well then.

Bannen - dwarven fighter/thief (protagonist)
Wewa - dwarven berserker
Bannen and Wewa have both made it past Sarevok and also escaped Chateau Irenicus, so we are continuing our trilogy no-reload challenge. One interesting fact of this run is that neither player has died yet. For most of the dungeon, the duo dual-wielded, Wewa dual-wielding axes and Bannen long swords. Bannen would switch to his long bow anytime they duo fought mages, just to press the attack on the mages, rather than trying to approach in melee. We did/fought everything here, except we didn't fight the mephits guarding the genie lamp because Corey_Russell thought the duo didn't have stun immunity...later he realized there was no reason Wewa coulidn't have enraged with him assisting with his bow..oops...no biggie though we just don't need the Sword of Chaos.

Focus, human totemic druid (Grond0) & Diffy, human invoker (Gate70)
Yesterday saw the duo make some decent further progress, although Diffy suffered her first death.
At the vampire hide-out it didn't take long to finish off Lassal and then Bodhi - though she survived longer than I expected surrounded by summons.
On the way to report to Aran Renfeld was rescued and Prebek & Sanasha soon showed the way into Harper HQ to loot that.
At the Bridge District the kidnappers were punished, but the loss of reputation was immediately cancelled by speaking to the guard outside the circus tent and Lt Aegisfield.
An invasion of Watchers Keep was met by a couple of vampiric wraiths, but they had forgotten to bring magic weapons with them, so were soon accounted for by summons - allowing the top level of the Keep to be fully looted.
Back in the City, the Temple Sewers were cleared of a rakshasa and a sea troll on the way to take on a Shade Lich. For a change we didn't use green scrolls here: summons proved sufficient, though Focus lost all his spirit summons to an initial death spell.
Moving on to the City Gates area they came across Sansuki when spells were a bit low. However, they still had enough to save him. After resting the lich was attacked, butDiffy's saves proved insufficient to ward off a symbol death. The fire elemental provided revenge before immediately turning hostile (I think as a result of damage from the efreeti).
Diffy has learnt spell immunity and Focus acquired the Staff of Rhynn with a view to doing Kangaxx next time. While travelling doing that they got ambushed by Tanova - again with spells depleted. As a result Diffy got drained, before Tanova disappeared somewhere.
Stats (incl. BG1):
Focus, totemic druid 13, 65 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 126 kills
Diffy, invoker 8 (under level drain), 40 HPs, 80 kills, 1 death

An early morning session saw Killian make plenty of progress, before eventually grinding to a halt.
He'd completed Aran's tasks, done the Harper HQ, cleared the Graveyard, solved the skinner murders and helped out the 3 temples.
Taking on Rayic Gethras he started off well with the berserk warrior and Kitthix soaking up lots of spells. With Killian immune to save or else spells I assumed he would be able to finish Rayic off easily. However, it took quite a while to batter down stoneskins and in the meantime none of Rayic's acid arrows and magic missiles got interrupted by Stonefire's elemental damage.
I did see the potential danger a long way off, but I was getting a bit bored by that stage and decided to see whether Killian could win the race. He did, but with nothing to spare and Rayic's dead hand reached out to pull Killian into eternity with him.

I quite like Killian's picture, so might give him another go, but will take a break for a few days first.

@Grond0. Condolences on the loss of Killian. I hope to see you back in action soon.

I will be playing with 2 parties, one with 6 (for getting expierience with different kits I haven't played before) and one with 4 (gonna kick Viconia and add Keldorn) which goes from Normal to Core rules to make it more a challenge also the lack of a Cleric (will still have Jaheira) wil force me to getting injured less and thus making me strategize more before a fight.
This time no no-reload challenge yet. But probably the next run!
I wanna thank all of you for sharing your experiences and wisdom and making others enthousiastic about BG.

Speaking of knowledge - you'll never have it too much and picking a bits of it every here and there is a way to go I think. For example, myself recently decided to dig even more deep in spell system and Specialist Mages in particular and after all those years with the Game I discovered some things that I wasn't aware of before - some spells are belong to two schools at once and moreover they could be even within an *opposite* schools (Lower Resistance or Spellstrike - Abjuration/Alteration). And while normally Specialist Mages can't learn spells from the opposite school they could learn and use those *dual-school* spells. That inspired me to try an Abjurer specialist mage in near future, think he could be quite powerful as abjuration spells are the key ones in SCS setups, IMO.
All the best with your runs and looking forward to see you here with us!

F/M/C is viable in a party in BG1 in my opinion, provide you do the first couple of levels with just Imoen and maybe one other character; the lag in exp isn't hugely noticeable at low levels although cloudkill will be a concern.corey_russell wrote...

Such a character can never get 9th level spells though.
Shame about the wild mage. As far as ending runs go, beholders must be right up there with Draconis, mind flayers and ghasts.
I'm only delaying the inevitable if I continue with that run I'm afraid, we've done all the do-able chapter two quests. Still haven't found a +3 axe for Korgan, Amulet of Power or a scroll of ProMW (I bet they're all inside the planar sphere). Salek needs another level to re activate his cleric abilities (not possible without xp exploits, improved Bodhi without NPP or ProMW would be... interesting).Alesia_BH wrote...

Restarted with a Skald because I remembered I can't stand Aerie (don't like any of the divine casters except Viccy, but can't keep her in a party with Keldorn, Anomen it is then). I'll update once I've done the important chapter two stuff (I'll try to fight Tor'gal more legitimately this time).

Bannen - dwarven fighter/thief
Wewa - dwarven berserker
Initially, the goals for the party was to get equipment, either picking it up off the ground so to speak, or getting quick cash to buy said equipment. Thus, what we did:
1) Bought Ring of Air Control for Bannen, for safety in ambushes primarily.
2) Obtained +2 axe in graveyard for Wewa - just had to pick a lock and dis-arm a trap, no problem for Bannen
3) Tried to get to the Copper Coronet, but got ambushed by Suna Seni - was no problem at all. Loot and armor upgrade were welcome.
4) Once Hendak was freed (Beastmaster solved by a Bhaal Horror), we purchased the Stonefire for Wewa - weapon-wise, she's good for a while now - can't afford sword of roses for Bannen, so we need more gold. But before that, we need a potion bag, we were overfilling with them. So we head to Watcher's Keep.
5) We don't make it to WK - got ambushed by Remfeld - so we return him to his friends - THEN we get to WK and get our potion bag
6) We then return to the Docks - it was the vampire ambush, one vamp vs. 3 shadow thieves - we waited it out and picked up the loot - yes now we can afford the Sword of Roses - did some looting of the nearby thieve's guild.
7) We go to Copper Coronet, get the Sword of Roses for Bannen, and also purchase some pro undead scrolls from a nearby temple.
8) We arrive at the graveyard once more, and this time Wewa takes out the Crypt King protected by pro undead scroll. The loot, the Namuraa, is a nice long sword for Bannen's off-hand.
9) One more armor upgrade - we kill Officer Dirth at the Sea's Bounty, full plate went to Wewa and Bannen took the AC 2 plate mail. We are finally ready to get a real quest going, we choose the Circus for the Ring of Human Influence.
10) Circus was no problem, not surprisingly. Bannen did detect illusion when helpful - Kalah got wiped out by a vampiric drain by Bannen
11) Last task for the session was obtaining the glasses of identification, though not before slicing through Bragg and his friend on the way.
Wewa is leading the kills, probably with her 19 STR.

Focus, human totemic druid (Grond0) & Diffy, human invoker (Gate70)
Dodgy planning combined with poor execution saw the end of this run yesterday.
The intention was to try and take on Kangaxx without using protection from undead scrolls - with Diffy using spell immunity to protect against imprisonment while keeping up a MMM barrage.
The initial stage worked fine as a few summons helped take down the lich form. However, things started going wrong when Diffy's attempted spell immunity was interrupted by Kangaxx's dialogue as he shifted to his new form - at that point the duo ran away to rest.
Coming back, Diffy had expected to buff before going down into the tomb, but Focus headed straight down in the expectation that Kangaxx would still be in the far corner of the tomb where his lich form was killed. However, it looked as though the golem had followed Diffy out previously - and Kangaxx had followed the golem to a position quite close to the entrance. The duo immediately ran upstairs again, but not before Kangaxx had imprisoned the golem.
It would have been sensible of course to use a green scroll or leave at this point, but the intrepid pair ventured down again to see if Diffy could attract Kangaxx's attention - she failed ...

Stur is continuing his run from BG1 with the restriction of only casting his spells through the medium of NRD (or special abilities).
In the dungeon there are initially no helpful magic items, so Stur was mainly using melee - trying to isolate individual opponents and then ganging up on them with his familiar. That required quite a bit of fancy footwork, e.g. taking advantage of the Cambion's slow weapon speed to get most attacks in without reply.
- the golems were locked in their room by an invisible familiar.
- for the traps he just relied on his 56 HPs - the closest he came to losing those was this spike trap that took him down to 12 HPs.
- I didn't initially fancy the steam mephit in the elemental plane, so bypassed that invisibly to get the sword from the genie. That got Stur to level 10; after starting well his later HP rolls were generally poor and his 59 HPs ended up just 0.5 above average.
- for the portal room Stur attracted the mephit's attention before going back to be made invisible. That allowed him to lock 2 mephits in the room and destroy their portals. The magma mephit didn't want to move so Stur took running pot-shots at its portal - finishing it off before needing to use any healing potions. The familiar then occupied the radiant mephit, while Stur trashed its portal.
Problems came when I forgot that the clone could cast detect invisibility. That allowed her to get the drop on Stur and his familiar and a lightning bolt made no mistake.

Stur did take revenge, but with HPs now down to 37 and no mobile ally, I didn't fancy his chances of completing the dungeon without casting.
- his NRD attempts held himself (out of visual range of enemies) and gated two demons among lots of other effects, but he survived them all. One surge even produced the huge bonus of a spell trigger scroll in his backpack.
- with the wands acquired, Stur went back to the air elemental plane and used cloudkill on the remaining mephits there (killing all but the air mephit - who then fell in melee).
- a critical from a summoned air elemental helped kill Ulvaryl - the elemental then went on to kill the assassins guarding the exit.
Having escaped bloodied, but unbowed, Stur moved on to the circus. I set the spell trigger up, but decided that using that would make things too easy for the time being. He initially spent some time darting the peasants, but I decided he needed to go for melee against Kalah. That was done after putting on spirit armour via NRD - he reached level 11 in the process. Incidentally, the spirit armour was double-cast on him and I noted that he'd got the improvement to spell saving throws twice. I tested that this can be done by normal sequential casting as well, though it's not something I would intend to make use of myself.
He's now at the Copper Coronet, having bought the ring of air control. By using that he can get his saving throw vs spells down to 1, which gives him a decent chance of buffing in safety - so he does now have a realistic prospect of keeping going for a while.

Stur's still plodding on, though progress is slow at the moment.
His first act was to liberate the Copper Coronet, though that was complicated when a summoned Nabassu turned the patrons hostile, meaning Stur couldn't rest in the inn. It took a couple of rests outside before he eventually managed to summon an air elemental to deal with the Beastmaster.
It seemed clearly necessary to improve the chances of spells casting correctly, so went to the Bridge District to learn minor sequencer (to put chaos shields in). Also learned spell immunity there and used that to get the berserker horn.
On the way back to Slums the Suna Seni ambush triggered. Taking a potion of mind focusing allowed Stur to identify the berserker horn and use that and he also used a potion of speed, but still needed to save against a horror spell before running and sniping allowed him to put the opposition down. The loot was used to buy a magic license.
Back to the Copper Coronet and down into the sewers. Typically he's used NRD for stoneskin and spirit armour and then tried getting an air elemental, used skull traps from out of sight or meleed individual enemies. That was pretty slow going though as spells only had about a half chance of casting successfully and Stur only has 5 NRDs a day - so typically he didn't get as far as trying to get an elemental (and when he did some of them went hostile). Therefore he went to beef up a bit by buying a sequencer and simulacrum from Bernard and successfully learnt those (I'm not allowing him to use intelligence potions to make certain of spell learning).
With his slightly increased spell capacity he killed the trolls and managed to get HPs up with vampiric touch to walk through the acid trap. However, I still think he's a bit too exposed to spell failure, so will be looking next time for some items to boost his combat strength a bit before going back to deal with the slaver mages and the remaining guards.
He's had far too many surges to keep track of, but this one was notable as being a rare example of a 5-in-1 surge.

1. The use of Feeblemind on creatures such as Firkraag.
2. Repeated memorization of spells (memorizing and deleting from spellbook) with or without temporary party disbandment to boost xp.
3. Is starting from BG1 a must for this challenge? BG1 does not run on my machine.

There's no specific rule against using cheese (besides, I don't feel it's cheesy to feeblemind Firkraag provided you challenge him first). I believe other runs have made use of exploits like that steal scroll -> learn it -> erase -> repeat trick for unlimited xp or gold (though you might as well use the console imo).WaterMane wrote...

Of course, it's more satisfying to play fairly and will get you more, um... e-cred, I guess.
Plenty of people have started in BG2 as opposed to doing the whole trilogy. Although if you want to play BG1 and can't get it working on your computer you might consider EasyTutu - a conversion of BG1 in the BG2 engine.3. Is starting from BG1 a must for this challenge? BG1 does not run on my machine.

Stur continues to survive. It's still hard work, but he has made some perceptible progress this morning by acquiring a few goodies from the City Gates lich.
He finally got around to beating up Cohrvale & Bregg. Then travelled to the City Gates in search of plunder. On the way he encountered Renfeld - all NRD's were already gone, but stoneskin/spirit armour, together with the berserk warrior, allowed Stur to easily finish off the ambushers.
At the City Gates a knock scroll was used to open up the lich's hide-out (to minimise the chances of a surge with innocents nearby). After resting, he used a protection from undead scroll and a phantom blade to kill the lich, with an NRD knock getting Daystar. With the green scroll still up he went to find the lich in the Bridge District; he failed to produce another phantom blade, but his staff proved sufficient there.
Travelling back to the Promenade, Stur was ambushed by orogs - fortunately he managed to get an air elemental active, which soon dealt with them. After selling surplus equipment he returned to the slaver ship for a date with the mages. A cloudkill (from wand liberated from the City Gates lich) killed one and left the other nearly dead - he was finished off with the Rod of Terror; Stur's charisma taking a hit there. Another point of charism was lost to a guard (down to 1, so Stur needs to prepare carefully before using the Rod again).
Finally got around to returning Renfeld - a very slow-acting poison meant he was still alive! Preparing for Prebek more of Stur's hard-earned gold went up in smoke. He used the RoAC to sneak into the house and a wand cloudkill won the contest for him. After looting the Harper HQ, Stur has just reported in to Mae'Var for duty.

Bannen - dwarven level 9 fighter/level 11 thief
Wewa - dwarven level 12 berserker
When we last heard of our duo, they were in the graveyard - while there, they went ahead and took out this skeletal warrior/mummies nearby. Pretty easy with help of the Daystar.
Since we had some cash, we also got the sling of seeking for Wewa and sword of flame for Bannen so that he could kill trolls. We then decide to help Trademeet with their animal attack problem. The duo did well, including the Troll Mound. We have bad memories of the troll mound, as here Goodguy and Badgirl had the fight of their lives. Bannen and Wewa are notice-ably tougher and hit harder. For the shadow druids, Namuraa was enough to sway the battles our way, although the team did have to take a few lightning bolts. We got the Belm for Wewa. Our last fight for Wewa to charge some spore colonies, being protected from confusion with the Shield of Harmony - once she had their attention, Bannen assisted with his bow. Cernd then dueled Faldhorn and won. We reported our success to the mayor and he was pleased.
Bannen decided he needed a decent shield too - thinking ahead to when we fight thieves (the duo intends to help Bodhi). So we do the necessary talking in Umar Hills with the Immesvale mayor and Maduff, also obtaining the Ilbratha and a Bejuril gem while we were here.
Dogdancing was getting pretty tired, so we did the first Maevar task (get the amulet from the Talosians), reported to him and ended our session here.

The long story short - Abazigal and his family are all cold dead now!
The whole lair is pretty straightforward - pure hack-n-slash. With Planetar tanking the Drakes fell pretty quick and before engaging Abazigal BlackStrider set some Time/Spike Traps, then we took a pocket plane rest and rebuff. Abazigal's human form is quite sturdy and hit hard but eventually he got enough damage and flip. Tamah *dropped* near the party and right onto the Time Traps, Alesia and Pot tried Pierce Magic/Breach via wands on her but the time has freezed so BlackStrider hit her with the same sequence but only managed to deliver some free hits with Chaos blade afterwards (or rather I think so as the screenshot shows that Chaos is not *equipped* - the consequence of switching dual-wielding weapons with Infinity Animations/ restored BG1 vanilla animations installed and my inattention). Nonetheless she then stepped into the Spike Trap and got some ranged GWW from our fighters. Somehow I didn't noticed that Krimlor was hurt in the process so with her dying breath Tamah took him with her into oblivion... Oh well, it's been quite a while since when any of us died... Meanwhile Abazigal was occupied with Planetar, Earth Elemental and some Mordy Swords so we used our time to hit him with another Pierce Magic/Breach followed by old good ranged GWWs. Alesia raised Krimlor with RoR so he could share an experience of our victory while BlackStrider sang an inspiring song. History is silent on who owns the coup-de-grace hit as Abazigal pre-dying speech activated after Grond's one but Corey's one was right before the *quest reward* message (and none of both has Abazigal in *most powerful vanquished* record). In any case we prevailed *nearly* unscattered and really happy with that.

Onto Balthazar!
to be continued...
