Also is there a post somewhere describing common acronyms such as CI, SCS and NPP?

There are quite a few listed on http://social.biowar...79176/1#7779176.

Just a quick update - Avenger the Gnomish Fighter is still alive. He is traveling with Korgan, Minsc, Aerie, Yoshimo and Cernd. We've taken down Shagbag, much to Korgan's delight, rescued Cernd's kid, solved Trademeet's problems with the druids and dealt with the slavers in the slums once and for all, and did a short quest to get a talking sword.

The only interesting bit of all this is that Cernd failed his challenge vs. Faldhorn and was killed. He had tried to do insect plague but Faldorn resisted , Cernd was getting interrupted so tried wolfwere form but the form couldn't get the job done, and despite Cernd's many buffs he was killed. So we went back to Trademeet, resurrected him and returned. Cernd did a re-match, this time, summoning a bear to assist, and Cernd got hit with insect plague - nothing to do then except switching to wolfwere form once more. With the bear's help, Faldhorn finally fell.

I know what you mean DeekayNL. Although I've too just started the no-reload challenge I've come to realize how much I would reload in my past runs through the game as I would frequently neglect to account for a potentially devastating aspect of an encounter.

Same here, I never went into a fight with that much on the line so never really thought about the available options :D
This it its a real challenge.

polytope wrote...
I think DeeKayNL is using SCS? My experience with SCS - in my current game anyway - is that the entire ship (except Haegan) gets aggroed if you go through the front door and you can end up fighting the pair of mages before you intend to.

Yes indeed I do have SCSII (Sword Coast Strategems II) installed. I also chose for the option of clerics and mages buffing when the see me. So no real prebuff but one step higher as normal.

I am thinking about uninstalling SCS for the time being, just to get used to the no-reload on vanilla and then reinstall SCS.

Probably tonight I'm gonna make a new party for a no-reload run.

 Avenger the Gnomish Fighter Update
Traveling with: Korgan, Minsc, Yoshimo, Aerie, Cernd

The team decided to work on Minsc's quest (Umar Hills). We buy some magical ammo in Umar Hills and press into the Umar Temple area. We did OK here, except with the initial shadow ambush, somehow a shadow one-shotted Cernd, who was about full health - not sure how the shadow did that. So we had to go to Trademeet and resurrect Cernd and return.

Once inside the temple, the team did very well. Korgan, Avenger and Minsc, who all have AI standard attack, did great here. Guess Yoshimo's excellent thief work should be mentioned too. Only Skeletal warriors and shadow fiends were present, so pretty minor opposition. We decided to leave the shadow dragon alone for now. AI was also enough for the Shade Lord, except I did have Cernd use some sun bullets on the shadow altar.

When we returned in Umar Hills, a fire elemental and Yoshimo crept forward. Yoshimo backstabbed the ranger then ran away. The fire elemental then soloed the rangers. The Mayor of Immesvale was quite happy with our success.

Now that Cernd has two fire elementals he can cast, it's time to get a full plate for Avenger. So we return to Waukeen's Promenade and go to the Seven Vales. We don't even bother buffing. Instead, Cernd casts, in order: two fire elementals, farsight, nymph and genie from lamp. He then has the genie distract enemy mages, one fire elemental attack Brennan Risling, the other fire elemental attack Mencar Pebblecrusher, and then the Nymph tried to charm (which worked) Orcslicer. The summons did great and Orcslicer was killed by his own mages. Risling and Pebblecrusher were near death so the party finally showed themselves and finished them off. Now the fighters all have full plate.

Now that I know it's not hard to break the Harper quest (as happened to Bannen and Wewa), I decided to do that first before headed to D'Arnise Keep. We we loot Harper's Hold, give the bird to Xzar, which ends up killing him. Tough luck guy. We sell and get a few odds and ends from the Temple area and head to D'Arnise Keep. During all of this we got a number of ambushes. But the fighters do excellent, so just have to get Aerie and Cernd out of the way, cast a spell or two and that's that.

At D'Arnise Keep, things work smoothly, most trolls being killed either by Korgan's Stonefire or Yoshimo's fire/acid arrows. Glaicas got doomed and held. Golems were pulled on at a time. We used Azuredge and the +3 throwing hammer to take out the iron golem. The Frostweaver was a welcome upgrade for Avenger, as well as the giantkin warhammer for Korgan, his anti clay golem weapon. Even the magical long bow was an upgrade for Minsc.

The party was just about to enter the dungeon (bottom level) of D'Arnise Keep when Dogdancing wanted to spoon, so the duo ended their session here.

I thought I would mention the party's primary weapons:

Korgan: Stonefire
Avenger: Frostweaver (but most of the game was the +2 axe from the graveyard)
Minsc: Lilacor, or mace +1/Arbane if fighting shadow fiends or enemy clerics. At the end of the session, Minsc's primary 1 hand weapon is now the Flail of Ages.
Yoshimo: Tuigan's Bow
Aerie: Dragon's Bane sling (+3)
Cernd: +2 sling

Stur - human wild mage (update 9)

At the Druid Grove Stur bought a few potions from Adratha, but left in her in peace (for now).  He watched on enviously as Cernd tore Faldorn apart with 3 blows.  Reporting in at Trademeet got him to level 16.  That would normally give him level 8 spells, so I feel comfortable now about using his spell trigger.  His spell save has also reduced (down to a standard 2 when unbuffed), which is helpful for occasions where I fail to practice safe spell-casting.

Saved Raissa and moved on to the tomb, where Stur tried out a triple skull trap trigger.  Both skeleton warriors made their saving throw there, but Stur still had no trouble finishing them off with a bit of help from the golem (he'd buffed with improved haste outside).

Next up was the Unseeing Eye. Stur tried to use a skull trap trigger on the group of beholders by the bridge, only to damage them with the rather less effective falling cow - got the animation that time!  Stur had taken the precaution of buffing with protection from magic energy and spell shield, so wasn't in immediate danger and cloudkills killed the beholders while the golem and efreeti took care of a couple of chasing gauths.

Took a risk with the Empathic Manifestation in the temple by using Bhaal healing on it.  I'm not sure what attacks it has, but didn't find out this time.  The healing did actually surge, but cast normally anyway.  The first lot of undead downstairs were quickly killed with triggers.  A couple of skeleton warriors lasted long enough inside to kill most of the lich's allies and drain most of its spells.  That allowed Stur to shoot it up from behind further summons - got to level 17 there.  Skeleton warriors also did the bulk of the work on the beholders, though a trigger was used on a group of gauths and an incendiary cloud on the blind priests.  The Eye itself was finished off by a skeleton warrior.

Stur remembered to drop off the Rift Device and then went to make a bit of inventory space before coming back for Gaal - a couple of skeleton warriors and the golem quickly accounted for him.  With cash building up again Stur used that to buy the Sling of Everard.  He's just travelled to the Umar Hills for the next stage of his adventures.

Load a save into ShadowKeeper. Sounds like your charisma is 0, any stat zeroed means instant death.

@Watermane - if you were using the rod of Terror your CHA will do down, that's what the rod does per description. And if the rod gets your CHA to zero you are dead (unless RoHI is on). No bug, just D&D rules that say a player is dead if any stat gets to zero or below. This is also why mind flayers can slay someone even though they might be full health, by getting their INT to zero.

You can abuse that as if you keep the ring on your charisma can be drained below 0 - the game implements this by wrapping it round to 25!

Stur - human wild mage (10th and final update)

Stur's hard graft eventually came to an end at the hands of the Shade Lord.

At Umar Hills he provided some equipment to get a few young lads into trouble.  Then he tracked down Merella's journal.  He got to level 18 as a result of that and learnt to summon a planetar; that got an immediate outing and quickly killed a killer mimic and a couple of umber hulks.  Stur sorted out a rogue golem with his staff and then moved on to the ruined temple.

Worked through the undead, with the planetar twice trumping the resident liches.  I didn't prepare much for Thaxy, hoping that the planetar would do a job there as well.  However, it proved inadequate, even when getting some shielding interference from other summons.  In the end Stur resorted to hiding in one of the alcoves while his wand of fire (and the occasional critical bullet) wore Thaxy down.  Got to level 19 for doing that (energy blades).

For the Shade Lord Stur put in the flesh golem immediately hoping for a quick kill.  He should have gone in pre-buffed with energy blades, but hadn't done so and that proved costly when the Shade Lord managed to get his buffs going while at near death.  He hung on in there while Stur tried to bury him in summons from his wand.  I didn't think there was too much danger at that point - but I was wrong.
Posted Image
I couldn't see what killed him, but I think the Shade Lord's aura must include an instant death attack as well as level drain.  By that stage of the battle RoAC protection would have worn off, so Stur's saving throw against death would have been a very vulnerable 4.

I don't think it's attacking first per se, but killing Lehtinan before Hendak starts attacking - I assume that this represents him taking out his annoyance at someone depriving him of his chance for revenge.

Adaes Half Elf Mage/Thief  with Keldorn and Jahira in party update 3:

The next order of business is the De'Arnise Keep. All went well with Adaes making many of the deathblows on trolls with fire arrows. Torgal went down but not before taking out Jaheira's fire elemental and Keldorn taking heavy damage.

Posted Image

As the group reaches the roof of the Keep to clean up the last of any monsters, they are confronted again by the Harpers. This time its Reviane and company. Keldorn was taking heavy hits from Reviane and had to dance around chugging potions before he could engage in combat again. Adaes hit the group with a charge from his wand of monster summoning to act as meat shields after which he cast Chaos and Emotion to disorient and disable the enemy. Victory was had in the end.

Posted Image

Next stop is Trademeet to finish up the Skinner Murders quest. Raissa is restored, that quest line completed, and the groups reputation raised to 16. Since we're in town and with the coin to spare Adaes picks up a Belt of Inertial Barrier and Cloak of Displacement. Jaheira wouldn't mind a couple of upgrades of her own so we make our way to the adventurer's mart to get her the Shield of Balduran then to the Joluv in the CC to grab her the Sling of Everard. All these purchases bring the party's liquid assets down to <5000gp. In an effort to replenish this the group looks to plunder a few well equipped groups around Athkatla, beginning with the group in the Den of the Seven Vales then to the Delosar's Inn, the sewers below the Temple district then finally the guarded compound also in the Temple district. The first three were taken care of without much issue, the first fight in the guarded compound proved difficult however as Keldorn was slain, leaving Adaes and Jaheira to retreat into a adjacent room. Luckily the Glabrezu could not fit through the doorway so Adaes was able to land a final blow to take him out. At around this time I discovered that I had drained my Cha to zero as a result of using the Rod of Terror (I did not realize this would happen) so I changed my Cha back to 3 using Shadowkeeper (thanks Gate70), I won't make that mistake again. After reviving Keldorn we prepare for the battle to come in the upper level of the compound. Adaes hastes the group then each member goes invisible via rings of invisibility. We ascend to the upper level and quickly dart into the left room where we prepare some sacrificial summons. A charge of monster summoning is used and a ghast is brought into being, hasted then sent into battle in hopes of softening up the enemy. This didn't work out too well as these summons died within seconds and dealt very little damage. Jaheira was up next to summon in a couple of fire elementals (one of which ends up being a higher hit roll one :D) and two nymphs. These are also hasted and otherwise buffed and sent in. This time the group follows, bow, crossbow and sling in hand. Insect plague, chaos and emotion do the trick as far as disabling the room long enough to take everyone down. Aftermath of the battle:

@Grond0: I'm fairly certain the vanilla Shade Lord has FoD in his script, I vaguely recall that from one of my runs - in parties I always use death ward on my PC to counter that. As a mage, guess you could use spell turning and such.

Avenger the gnomish fighter - FINAL Update

Avenger and gang had done a ton of things, but it ended up not mattering. The party was outside Dulasar Inn, buffing before dealing with Captain Dennis once and for all. However, Aerie, Avenger's love, forgot that we hadn't paid for our  magic license yet and have already been warned. So when she cast SI:evocation we were boxed in by the Cowlies. With his save vs. spells being 3, damage wise he was doing good. However his party was getting stunned and held, so they weren't doing well. And his save vs. spells doesn't help vs. maze and he was mazed. Once his party was slain, he couldn't find his way back and his run ends.
Posted Image

I think I've had enough of party play, be back with some kind of solo character.

It is a bit of a pain early on to shell out 5000gp, I'm always afraid of being swarmed by coweled wizards so thats usually where my first 5kgp goes.

Corey_Russell/Dogdancing Multi-Player No-Reload
Bannen, fighter/thief, controlled by CR
Wewa, berserker, controlled by Dog

So the duo took on Umar Hills this session. The initial ambush was OK, but the level dependent spawns were extremely difficult for the party. For one, these sucked all our heal potions - we have zero now. Our only source of healing other than 2 bhaal heals is our Rod of Resurrection (which we did recharge afterwards).

We had to fight bone golems, greater mummies (tough cookies these things) and skeletal warriors. It didn't help that a great many heal potions were lost when Bannen was tanking - he didn't realize until a long time he wasn't using a +3 weapon and thus was doing no damage to the Greater Mummy. The duo was forced to run everywhere, throwing our range weapons while running - took a long time and we got shadow adds too. The team did, eventually prevail. We had to kite the next group, though a few snares helped weaken the groups some. We ran everywhere for the next group too.

So no heals, but we must press on - a single shadow was no match. For the Shade Lord, Wewa enraged and dual-wielded, while Bannen worked on the shadow altar. Shade Lord cast a single target spell at Bannen - FoD perhaps? But Bannen saved and Shade Lord didn't live much longer. After winning this final battle, we reported the to the mayor, getting Wewa a level, sold our juink and recharged the RoR and decided to call it a night - that's enough excitement.

Adaes Half Elf Mage/Thief with Keldorn and Jaheira in party update 4:

It's about time to pursue fixing Keldorn's Dex problem, especially with the Shield of Balduran in hand, so we're off to eradicate the Cult of the Unseeing Eye. The Shade Lich proved to be remarkably easy, three traps and couple of good initial hits and he was nearly dead already. Another tick of damage from the traps and he was history. Fast forward to the Ghoul Bridge Area and Ghoul Lord Room. Mummies and ghouls alike go down with ease with assistance from a trusty fire elemental. Sometimes theres a lich that spawns in the Ghoul Lord Room but this time I did not run into one (maybe it depends on character level?) so Keldorn got his Dex gloves with little resistance. Jaheira roamed about the beholder area clearing it with the help of a few summoned ghouls to speed things up. Big bad unseeing eye beholder went down easily as usual.

Adaes has been itching for a new staff ever since his run in with the rod of terror so the group decides to go enter the Twisted Rune to grab the Staff of the Magi.

All went pretty well zerging with summons, we got the staff hurray!

Posted Image

I guess the pitfiend wasn't too happy about that...

Posted Image

Ouch! After everyone quickly chugged a potion we darted for the exit and made it out safely, though barely. Now for something a little more tame we'll help retrieve Haer'Dalis and rescue the performers from the Planar Prison. The Planar Prison wasn't terribly difficult and yielded lots of loot worth a fair bit, boots of speed are nice as well. The only tedious part was switching to a vs. giant kin hammer and saving grace shield on Keldorn to take care of the clay golem. Also, Renal Bloodscalp had us run a few errands for MaeVar and Edwin which were completed without incident.

Hard luck with Avenger Corey - those Cowled Wizards are a pain. If you've got Yoshimo in your party then you can easily profit from them by putting down traps before casting a spell (for extra safety make it invisibility).

Incidentally, the death wasn't due to a bug, so technically your run is no longer a no-reload attempt according to the rules in the initial post on this thread. You may of course wish to continue it anyway in order to get knowledge of what tactics work well for future attempts ...

Will you be running another WM? I think you've had the most success out of any player with them, I'd never have the patience for it though.

DeeKayNL wrote...

Well, it's your game, so do what you want, but making Viconia into a magic resistant fighter/cleric with better physical stats is overpowered. In the vanilla game her poor strength and constitution and less useful single class are a trade off for her innate magic resistance... although I once entered a party with Mazzy kitted as an archer, so perhaps I shouldn't talk.

Anyway, good luck with your party, looks strong.

Fairly short Aleks update: After saving Raissa (sp?) in Trademeet and returning the mantle we have the best possible reputation. Returned to Athkatla for Nalia's father's funeral and brought the plate of Balduran and harmonium halberd - these aren't randomized - the halberd helps with the party's strength issues, since Keldorn has 19 str with this item and a strength spell from Nalia.

Went to investigate eyeless cult, accidentally electrocuted Sassar's friends while zapping the wraiths with the wand of lightning (didn't want to melee them because it's really annoying walking all the way back to the temple to get undrained). In spite - or rather, because - of my best efforts innocent people keep dying horribly shortly after meeting Aleks, it's the curse of the Bhaalspawn.

Luckily, even if Sassar is hostile he still talks to you and tells you about their plant in the cult when you walk back past him with the piece of the rift device.

There's an adult beholder with the gauths across the bridge, we need death ward before facing that, so go and recruit Anomen.

I hadn't tested it yet in the most recent versions of SCS; but my beholder killing strategy still works: Surround the beholder with invisible, hasted fighters, use a mage with MST to attract their anti-magic ray (they can't resist using it on the first spellcaster they see), chop the beholder up before he can use it again (one round).

Posted Image

Well, the beholders try to fly away when attacked which might be a problem in conjunction with their slow ray, fortunately PC and Valygar made their saves. Also had the cloak of reflection to protect from their lightning bolts.

Went through the undead town, nothing interesting here.

Quite a few adult beholders in the lair, I will probably end up alerting others if I attack one of them ("better calls for help"). Grabbing the items from the... um, polyp things... here under sanctuary isn't an option because of the tendency of SCS enemies tend to follow sanctuaried characters. I might leave it for later... as in, four chapters later.

Tarnor's gang in the sewers, really easy, Keldorn's first dispel failed but his second try removed the blade barrier from one cleric and all the buffs from the mage (fight was over about 2 seconds afterwards, don't know why I even screenshotted it). Found dragon scale shield and ring of human influence here.

Planar prison next, as of now I've done everything except fighting the warden and it's been pretty easy without the extra Yuan Ti spawns. However, the Yuan Ti mage in the first room managed to bring Valygar down to 7hp with a 3x flame arrow sequencer.

Posted Image

The only reason it didn't kill him instantly is because he has 50% fire resistance with his armor and dragon helm. I keep my PC Improved Invisible in every fight with high level mages precisely to avoid getting fried by this kind of sequencer.

Aleks reached 9th level in this battle and became a grandmaster of flails (I'm playing with semi-nerfed GM - 5 stars in a weapon grants an extra 1/2 attack rather than a full attack).

Found gauntlets of dexterity on one of the thralls guarding the Wyvern.

Keldorn got level drained by the master of thralls, who also has an annoying tendency to go etheral when attacked, I think the best tactic is to wait until just after he has used one of his other powers (so it's another round before he can turn etheral) and pile on.
