Corey quick question, how is it that as a human you have 19 str and dex but appear to be penalized in constitution?

He has 19 (18 initial + tomes for each Str, Dex, Con from BG1 - he is on a Trilogy no-reload run) and -2 penalty via Claw of Kazgaroth took along from BG1.

I can see them, the res does look pretty high, everything must be tiny when playing!

@Watermane: I started Theen in BG 1 and imported him to BG 2. In BG 1 there a number of tomes that increase stats of characters. There aren't any such tomes in BG 2, so that explains the 19 DEX and STR. He actually has 19 con for the same reason, but the Claw of Kazagarath was imported in from BG 1, so he takes a 2 point penalty to his constitution.
@Gate - not sure really. If I don't need immunities was planning martial staff. But if I need hold immunity then something like Stonefire with Arbane off hand, etc.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 29 - (1st and final update)
Blagg, dwarf priest of Helm (Grond0) & Aubrey, human stalker (Gate70)

After cruising through BG1, a comedy of errors saw this duo fail at the first hurdle in BG2.

Things all seemed very straight-forward in the dungeon, which probably accounts for the loss of concentration there.  The sequence of events went something like this:
1)  The duo found they did not have the key to the magic missile trap.  Back to rummage under the clone's body to get this.
2)  The duo found they did not have the key to the fire trap.  Back to the portal; searched a few containers to find the portal key; found the key on the otyugh's body.
3)  Aubrey heads to disarm the fire trap while Blagg and his skeletons move forward.
4)  Despite being right next to the console Aubrey receives a message that he's too far away to activate it.  Meanwhile I'm not paying attention and the skeletons are continuing to move forward, with the result that a couple of scorchers / fireballs lick out.
5)  Noticing the bursts of fire on the screen I broke off my Skype conversation with Gate70 and clicked at the bottom of the screen to try and send Blagg back out of danger.  Unfortunately it appeared that Blagg was not selected, but the skeletons were.  As a result he continued on into the heart of the trap zone, while the skeletons walked back over the trap line.

And the effect of that little lot ...

I've died to god knows how many traps in this game, but I think that's a new one for my listImage IPB.

Sorry to hear that guys. Dogdancing and I are hesitant to play our run, as we have zero heal potions and Corey_Russell is not aware of any place to easily get more - I know Guarded Compound party has some, but that's hardly an easy fight...

Theen the solo Human Kensai - Update 2

Theen has weathered quite a few ambushes...he wonders what he will do once his heal potions run out. But for now here are some of things he did:

* Hendak freed - improved invisibility via RoAC against the casters and careful pulling/attacking against the beastmaster and his pets.
* Theen tried to do the Lilacor quest, but was getting repeated poisoned by the hobgoblins, despite RoAC being active. Good thing he looted those antidotes in Irenicus' dungeon...once the hobgoblins were clear, he realized he needed to change his priorities. Namely, improve his missile defence and also get extra antidotes.
* Theen went to the Graveyard district to rescue a man buried alive, then tried to find the perpetrators. But he got ambushed by ambushers of Renfeld, so used RoAC Improved Invisibility once more and rescued the man. Renfeld was returned to his friends. Back to the bridge district...
* Theen would like to get the Valhalla horn, but can't think of a good way - he certainly doesn't want to waste a pro magic scroll for that. So he passes for now...
* Theen attacks the man in red but should have talked to the guy first...hmm door is locked tight and not even 24 STR can bash it - drats. So need to something else other than the boots of avoidance...
* Theen gets another RoAC, to help in case of a long battle or also multiple ambushes in a row. He also gets boots of grounding since boots of avoidance won't be available for him.
* Theen tries to assist Xzar, but only helps an assassin to kill Xzar. Theen also defeated Prebek by going invisible and then one-shotting Prebek, which broke Sansha's script. The trapped chests were left alone.
* Theen gets to Trademeet and battles the genies - even with STR 22 and haste and improved invisibility, was a very hard fight. Was worth it for the cash and the genie lamp though...had to sell the shield of harmony what a waste...
* Using an invisibility potion he found on the High Merchant's shelf, Theen solved Trademeet's druid problem. Basically, he talked to the initial shadow druid, went invisible all the way to Cernd, and then had Cernd challenge without being in Theen's group (Cernd always wins in that case). This worked, mission success.
* Theen gets an undead scroll and uses it to battle the Crypt King - now he can silence casters with the Namuraa, this might come in handy...
* Theen takes Gate70's advice and obtains the Ilbratha in Imnesvale.
* Lilacor obtained finally.

Theen rests and is about the enter the slaver ship from the sewers...

Roger the fence has some for sale, so does sister Garlena and there are some in the chest in the room to your left upon entering WK (you can avoid the vampiric wraiths) - unless of course you've already got those.

We use the NE entrance and get down and... WHAAAT!!! Four earth elementals, all of them uninjured! Hizkiah is dead in seconds and Hayk badly pounded. Off we run to the streets, but this time the elementals follow. So we run to the Government district to pay magic fee and to think of a new strategy to solve this situation. Maybe we should buy a Death spell to deal with them?

Are you running patched ToB? The creature duplication bug usually happens in an unpatched game. Congrats on running a randomized party anyway, that takes guts.

If it makes you feel any better, I just got Keldorn killed by orcs in the Windspear hills..

There was a little foreshadowing to the fateful event, when fighting the orogs in the well room the nearby golems were alerted and attacked, of course Aleks and Valygar both failed their save against the golem's slow spells (I usually use Keldorn with his armor to soak these up), because terrible luck with saves is something that happens in a no reload game. Nalia took a couple of golems out with the rod of smiting - we found that in the Planar Prison too. (Did I mention these orcs and orogs do nasty damage in spite of their poor THAC0 and with SCS are barbarians/berserkers hence immune to most crowd control spells?)

Now what else happens when playing Ironman? Strings of criticals: 3 orcs crit Keldorn, combined with two hits from Tazok he falls - no time to drink an invisibility potion.

Image IPB

Tazok also had an oil of speed (I think), hence the flail of ages didn't slow him, only reduce him to normal speed.

Tazok was eventually taken down with a (mediocre) backstab from Valygar. First time I've ever lost a party member in this fight or had to retreat from Tazok. Never underestimate an opponent...

Conster was really easy, he didn't have any spell immunity/illusion trickery, just used a dispel from Keldorn and a breach of his contingency:stoneskin, he didn't manage to cast anything (over-prepared and wasted 2 potions of clarity for Aleks and Valygar)

Image IPB

Samia's party was also really easy, to avoid getting stuck in the door by their warriors and unable to reach Kaol, I had Valygar hide in the room where the last genie guardian was and cut down their mage immediately after Keldorn dispelled his protections. Well, we had reason to be suspicious, our paladin detected Samia's evil intent.

Image IPB

Items found: Dwarven thrower in well, robe of evil archmagi on Tazok, saving grace shield in prison room, ripper longbow in adamantite golem alcove (all useless to my party)... and Ilbratha and the ring of wizardry in the tomb! With the ring of wizardry Nalia is a better caster but an even worse thief (can't equip ring of lockpicks/danger sense without losing slots) oh well, we have enough money for master thievery and mind focusing potions.

Brought some scrolls in trademeet (ruby ray, Bigby's clenched fist, protection from cold, remove magic - might come in handy in close quarters where Keldorn's dispel would be inappropriate) and go on a scribing spree getting our mage to level 13.

Keldorn also detects the evil of the druid grove Rakshasas - yeah, before entering their house, but starting this encounter unbuffed is a nice way to get a TPK. Joined Cernd here to provide a few buff spells although he can't do anything useful in this fight (or almost any fight, for that matter).

Nalia attracts the raks attention, protected with minor globe, SI:Abjuration and SI:Evocation. Is it an exploit to stack multiple spell immunities? Maybe, but since SCS mages do it, so will I. Keldorn has a couple of stabs at dispelling Ihtafeers buffs (failed), and Nalia casts remove magic at the lesser raks near Keldorn (succeded).

Image IPB

Eventually Nalia's spell immunities wear off (most of the raks AoE spam - telefield, death fog, web etc. - has also expired), so Valygar and Aleks join (Aleks is buffed with ProME against a possible 3x skull trap spell sequencer, and wears cloak of reflection in case of a 3x lightning bolt sequencer... I've learned from bitter experience here).

Valygar gibs one of the raks with a decent backstab. Oh, but I did something dumb here, I gave the ring of fire resistance and dragon helm to Keldorn before facing the raks (so that he would have 100%+ fire resistance with the staff of fire fireshield), meaning Valygar has only 25% fire resistance from his gear rather than 90%. Guess what happened?

Yep, 3x flame arrow sequencer and we're up to party death #4.

Image IPB

Well, Aleks bludgeoned Ihtafeer with the flail of ages to slow her and interrupt casting, then switched to Everard's morningstar to drain her uncast spells. The threat from raks is their spells rather than their melee attacks, which usually miss unless ofc they web/stun you first. Keldorn (whose buffs were dispelled) had to use a few extra healing potions.

Randomized items; duskblade halberd and strong arm longbow. NOT worth the effort considering an NPC death, a charge of the RoR (I'm not going to "recharge" this) and the potions I used.

Made a detour to Walmart... uh, Watcher's Keep on the way back to Athkatla, to get the potion case, obsidian ioun stone and quiver of plenty... oh, and to help the knights of the vigil... or something (My PC's absentminded tendency to get sidetracked and leave quests unfinished would suggest a lower wisdom score, but I have to play it safe).

Have you really gone through all the temples' stocks?  From memory there are the 3 in the Temple District, but also others in the Slums, Promenade & Bridge Districts.  Mrs Cragmoon also has some.

I think there are 8 standard potions in the entrance hall to the Radiant Heart that you might possibly have missed.

Nosferatu Half Elf Mage/Thief update 1:

The party is formed with the addition of Keldorn. While exiting the sewers from grabbing Keldorn I noticed that the kobolds down there were backstabbing my party, very interesting! After making it out of the sewers safely we did the circus quest then went to get a magic casting licence and Keldorn's family quest out of the way. We also saved Haer'Dalis but have not yet done the planar prison. Freeing Hendak and infiltrating the slaver compound wasn't too difficult though I notice a lot more potion chugging by enemies. We've assisted the temple of talos with acquiring materials for Sir Sarles and have retrieved the Dawn Ring. Next up is the Cult of the Unseeing Eye.

Storkeep near Jan's house has some lesser healers.
Enge in Promenade has lesser healers.
Cutpurse near Mrs Cragmoon has lesser healing & regeneration.
Temple of Waukeen in government district is easily overlooked. Lesser healing & elixir oh health.
I usually leave the rakshaka in the druid grove alive, she has all sorts of potions.
Each of the Trademeet merchants has potions in addition to those at the temple.

If you progress the de'Arnise stronghold the cleric will set up a temple in the golem hall.
Bannen can concoct potions when HLA's arrive. I have started using this for other potions.
Have you picked up Gaxx & Umar temple ioun stone - saves a ton of healing.

If you see the need continuing there are plenty of stores to empty later. Brynnlaw, Saghuagin, Underdark, Ust Natha so try & keep the potion container and bag of holding ready to hoard these.

New update on Anthal:

We did the following quests:

-Give the ghost boy his teddybear and killed his murderer.
-We found Lillarcor
-Defeated the cryptking
-Defeated Tirdis killers
-Did the Sir Sarles quest (we kept the real illithium)
- We were ambushed by the party that poisened Renfeld. We brought him back to the Harpers and also were duped to aid in the assasination of Xzar.
-And finally killed everyone (except the kids :D) on the Slaver Compound.

Seems when you have +3 and +2 weapons it's easier to do then with normal weapons like last time :D

Corey_Russell/Dogdancing Multi-Player No-Reload
Bannen, Fighter/Thief controlled by Corey_Russell
Wewa, Berserker, controlled by Dogdancing

So the duo takes the board's advice and gets all the blue potions from the Bridge District Temple and also Mrs. Cragmoon - Cragmoon has a lot of useful potions, we will need to remember that...

For our first target, we decided perhaps we should take out Tarnor's gang, with our save vs. spells pretty low. But first we got invulnerability potion from Roger, this way Wewa's save vs. spells would be <0. We summoned our 3 pets, and since our save vs. death is negative I had the efreeti cast stinking cloud. This helped some, but Wewa still needed RoR a few times. Bannen assisted by using his bow vs. Gaius until Gaius died. Success!

Since we were close, we also used a pro undead scroll vs. the nearby lich in the Eye of the Behoder's sewers. We quickly ran to the bridge district and took out the lich there as well, with the pro undead scroll still active.

Then we went to Ribald's and got a pro magic scroll and also Staff of Rhynn and went after Kangaxx. The battle went a long time, partly as it took us so long to get rid of the efreeti. Also, Kangaxx absorbed like 1000 damage but despite being near death, we couldn't even get him into his demi-lich form, not even with Wewa's help. We might have ran into the "regen" bug, but not sure. Regardless, the battle went so long that our pro magic scroll wore off - hmm, that would be our cue to retreat! So we do, and it was getting pretty late so we saved here.

You could use a protection from undead scroll on Kangaxx - if you're hitting a helpless target it would be a lot easier to judge how much damage you've done.

Nosferatu Half Elf Mage/Thief update 2:

The beholders encountered during the Unseeing Eye quest were quite dangerous and had to be dealt with using Cloudkill. Once this was complete the group made its way around Athkatla wiping out a few other parties in the Promenade, Bridge and Sewers beneath the Temple district. With the addition of SCSII theres a large increase in potions being dropped so we stopped by Watcher's Keep to grab a potion bag. We've completed the Mae'var quest line and have assumed authority over the small thieves guildhouse. On our way to the De'Arnise Hold we are stopped by a hostile group with a poisoned Renfeld. We deliver him to the harpers immediately and help Xzar out with getting killed. Onto the De'Arnise Hold while we wait for the harper hold quests to progress. The De'Arnise hold went smoothly and after that we aided the people of Trademeet with their druid problem. With SCSII the druid grove is quite a bit different in that there are a lot more monsters to slay, the added xp was nice. From here we did the first part of the Umar hills murder mystery quest and hacked down Valygar to entry into the Planar Sphere. Before this we decided to give the Twisted Rune a try. With the buffs to beholders I should have waited until I had time stop available as the attempt did not end well.

Image IPB

Although no longer eligible for the no reload challenge I'm going to play through more of the content to see what exactly the mods I've applied entail. I'll be back in a few days or so with another attempt at no-reload.

@Watermane: Yeah, the twisted rune hide-out can be real rough. One thing important to remember is the vamp takes +3 weapons/ammo to hit - I forgotten that a few times and it makes it rough if you forget that. Good luck in your next attempt. I usually leave this alone until chapter 6.

Hard luck, Rune should be a post underdark battle with SCS (unless you're willing to use cheese, a lot of traps, maybe project image + skull trap). It'd also probably be easier to kill Firkraag first and have Carsomyr for this encounter.

The usual cause with this bug is that Kangaxx was unable to give his opening dialogue, did he talk to you before the fight?

Adventures of Aleks (long update): Back in Athkatla, found the hideout with Dracandros and co. another easy fight, randomizer gave us the sword of flame and book of infinite spells here, got Farsight on my first page turn, nice.

Completed the thief guild tasks, Keldorn recently made level 12 and dispels at 18th level - as did Valygar who can now cast MSD and hopefully avoid a repeat of his death with the trademeet raks. With these levels Rayic was easy, as was Maevar. Found ring of spell turning in Maevar's chest.

Keldorn also has a paladin-y interjection about Embarl which makes absolutely no sense:

Image IPB

Why is he congratulating me for sparing someone that he thinks "deserved his death"? Why does he even say "deserved" and "death" when Embarl is still alive and going to escape?

Also paid Gaelan Bayle (Aran gave us robe of the neutral Archmagi - which we sold - and boneblade dagger) and fought the last group of ambushing vampires. Tanova could not be lured into attacking Nalia with ProMW and fireshield, but fluttered away in bat form and returned later, clever!

Well, a slow spell helped reduce the threat of the other two vamps (though Keldorn got hit and drained once) and when ProMW wore off Tanova concentrated on attacking Nalia, but our mage has a good AC with spirit armor, blur, II and a +1 buckler so the vamp missed her repeatedly, allowing the fighters to dispatch her quickly.

Image IPB

Time to take on the slave lords, I recruited Anomen to have some casts of death ward and CC available - Sion is likely to get off a few save-or-else spells in my experience.

Image IPB

I used the wand of cloudkill on Sion to interrupt his initial spell - this isn't fair but I can't think of any other way for a mid level party to get through his spell trap/spell shield/spell immunity combination - note that he had a self targetted wilting in his initial chain contingency, a good reason not to rush into this fight.

Sion ended up breaching/dispelling most of our buffs anyway, although the enemy fighters were already down and mages aren't usually able to do enough "burst" damage to kill you by themselves except for sequencers and ofc save-or-die spells (have 3 potions of magic shielding on PC just in case).

Rebuffed Nalia with some scrolls while Sion was killing our summons and had her cast Chaos on him a couple of times (we've got one memorized spell and two scrolls), the second attempt was a success and the fight is basically over now.

Image IPB

However Sion's mordy sword chased us down stairs and we had no magic missiles memorized to destroy it... memorizing protection from petrification might seem pointless with improved invisibility and the ring of spell turning, but there are a few AoE's causing petrficiation (Prismatic Spray and Sphere of Chaos, both common for SCS mages). Played chasey with the invulnerable sword for a while.

Loot; Helm of defense, hammer +1/+4 vs giants, fortress shield (might come in handy against the hordes of Kuo toa/Drow archers in underdark), adventurer's robe (good against vamps, their hands are crushing weapons) and some +1 full plates and other gear that we sold.

Have 75000+ gp, so buy the sensate amulet and some potions - Aleks can wear this when he gains one more level, and the amulet's protection from evil stacks with the spell of the same name. Also bought Protection from Fire from the merchant at the city gates - Nalia failed to scribe the scroll we found in the catacombs and I think this guy is one of only a few who stock it.

Took revenge on Saerk as per usual for my games - it annoys me that Anomen will still flip out when rejected from the Order even if you tell him beforehand that he has to choose between revenge for his sister and becoming a Knight, oh well, he's not going to be a permanent NPC.

Assaulted Bodhi's lair, discovered that improved vampires respond to NPP spells the same as ProMW i.e. by turning into mists/bats and fleeing until it wears off, I guess AC alone has to do the job. Found frostreaver axe here.

Tanova has apparently learned a lot of mage spells since we last met, particularly dangerous is Improved Haste (6 level draining attacks per round, would kill any of my characters in seconds...). Buff Nalia's AC as much as possible + cast spell immunity abjuration and have her attract the vampire mage's attention, then dispel the vamp's buffs (too difficult to aim this if she isn't standing in place):

Image IPB

Naturally Tanova has a contingency:stoneskin and recasts ProMW but that's breached immediately (had a scroll handy in case Nalia got critted and lost her slots) and she falls easily.

Also found the night's gift leather here, might keep just in case Imoen or Nalia ever need to HiS; they have a reasonable chance with this item + boots of stealth.

Didn't fight Bodhi herself yet, want to regain my Lathander abilities before I do so.

The planar sphere: Anomen buffs us with DW and CC before he leaves our party and we enter the mysterious sphere. The cannibal halflings were pretty easy, although CC wore off before fighting the shark men, who managed to stun Valygar, wand of fire to the rescue, and Improved Invisibility for Aleks (save vs death is exactly zero with this, helm of defense and protection rings).

Randomized items on the halflings, shield of the lost, Mana bow on Togan (with this and his armor Valygar is 45% resistant to skull trap and wilting) and Adjatha the drinker (nice weapon, but Keldorn is innately immune to charm, Valygar has his armor and PC can't equip it). Also collected a few potions of freedom and clarity. Valygar got level 13 around here.

First really challenging battle of the sphere, Tolgerias and his apprentice:

Image IPB

Did it the cheap way and used the wand of cloudkill on him, as we can't remove his spell shield/spell immunity and interrupt him before he casts TS and starts gating in balors (as he did in my last game). Keldorn's dispel magic removes his mislead clone and the other mage's buffs, Valygar with arrows of biting quickly destroys the simulacrum.

Image IPB

The elf mage has a contingency:stoneskin and recasts ProMW - doesn't help against two improved hasted fighters with normal weapons - while Nalia targets Tolgerias with Spell Thrust (to remove SI, although the first cast is absorbed by spell shield).

Keldorn's third attempt at dispel magic works! Good thing too, as Tolgerias was halfway through a slow casting conjuration spell - probably a balor. Needlesss to say, he didn't finish it.

Image IPB

Found flametongue longsword and scroll of simulacrum on Tolgerias.

Well, I've used up my wand of cloudkill (I don't sell wands to recharge them), but Nalia is only about 10,000 xp from lvl 14 - and able to cast ruby ray, then we can fight high level mages more "legitimately" - hopefully clearing the fire/ice rooms and the golems in the core will get her the level.

Thoughts on this party, Aleks has been a cleric of Lathander for 1/3 of chapter II, a fighter for 2/3rds and is still not a fighter/cleric... maybe I should've used a party of 3 up until the planar sphere. Valygar's stealth and backstabing abilities are useful though not essential. However, some fights would be noticeably tougher with only two warriors and I'd have collected less unused potions if my party took longer to kill enemies...

Yes, he talked to us just like he always does. I did a lot of pausing in order to try to pick-pocket him, which I failed to do in time before he went hostile, maybe that messed him up somehow though I don't know why it would. By the way, nice work on the harder areas you got accomplished.

Nice going so far, Polytope!

... memorizing protection from petrification might seem pointless with improved invisibility and the ring of spell turning, but there are a few AoE's causing petrficiation (Prismatic Spray and Sphere of Chaos, both common for SCS mages)

Sphere of Chaos doesn't have petrification effect (afaik), it has disintegration (Cassia permanently died via that back in the Ust Natha) and I don't think Pro vs Petrification will be useful in that case. It's way better(/easier?) just to keep your saves vs spells in safe area (imo).

Did it the cheap way and used the wand of cloudkill on him, as we can't remove his spell shield/spell immunity and interrupt him before he casts TS and starts gating in balors (as he did in my last game).

He ended my no-reload run exactly that way once... so I'm stick with *cloudkill approach* vs him since then as well. Yes, it's cheap but I can't find proper valid way to deal with him early on (and I'm always early here to have my stronghold).

@WaterMane: feel sad of your demise... With SCSII I leave Twisted Rune after Underdark as well.
Better luck next time!

Hello everybody!
I have to say that this is wonderful forum. I am studying here your approaches to beating no-reload game and it is thrilling reading, to be honest. I am a big fan of BG trilogy and here I see others which is great.

I am playing F/M/T solo and try to find out some aspects for future no-reload try. Perhaps I will join some day.

One question for polytope: which mode are you using for different look of your spell effects (clouds, spell immunity, etc.). Thanks in advance.

Theen the solo Human Kensai - FINAL Update!

With no more extra healing potions, Theen wasn't sure what to do. Since he was in the area anyways he tried to find the skinner murderer. Well he found them, however, despite his -7 to piercing and Improved Invisibility active, a quadruple backstab got Theen so low his basic blue potions were of no use - the bone golem wasn't helping things either and Theen was slain.

I'll likely be solo again, just need a concept.
