--------------------------- Chapter 3 ------------------------
Even though Oberon is only level 11, I decide to go for the planar sphere early so I get Aerie the ring of wizardry sooner. I swing by umar hills (doubling back once to return Rengfeld to the harpers) and pick up valygar. I use him to open the sphere then boot him from the party and grab yoshimo from the copper coronet as my thief. He's only got 160 000 xp though, so I buy two potions of mater thievery just incase.

The sphere turned out to be a cake walk, the battles went as follows:
1) Clay Golem was killed by tanking with spiders and shooting it with Melf's Minute Meteors.
2) Shauigan were killed by a cloudkill from aerie with a few extra damaging spells from Oberon.
3) The separate halfling warriors were hit with hold person and bashed to death.
4) Before the big group of halfling fighters Aerie and Oberon pre-cast Polymorph Self then stepped up to start the battle, Oberon flinging out a sequencer with 2 Webs and Aerie casting her other Cloudkill. They then immediately polymorphed into mustard jellies. Kayardi was the only one not held (protected by her globe of invulnerability) but she just threw all her spells on the mustard jellies as Anomen and Yoshimo were waiting back with the knights in the circular room. Oberon then just launched a bunch of volleys from the wand of lightning until only Kayardi was left. Still in mustard jelly form Aerie and Oberon bashed on her until she started running out of spells then transformed into sword spiders to finish her off.
5) The sword spiders and ettercaps were killed with help from some buffed skeletons.
6) The next group of halflings was just rolled over. Some spiders and skeletons were summoned outside the room to lead the charge, Oberon started by spell thrusting one of their minor spell turnings whilst Anomen cast true sight. Then it was just a general melee with some minor spells to speed things up as I was resting after that battle.
7) The fire elementals were killed by some Aerial Servants (and some skeletons to suck up damage) which stuck around long enough to kill the golems too and help get me the kill shot on the elder orb.
8) I thought from previous playthoughs that Lavok summoned some annoying monsters so I rebuffed Oberon with a bunch of protections and a number of spell Immunities so he wouldn't have to resort to mustard jelly form, but I did pre-cast it just incase. Turned out Lavok didn't summon anything and my spell immunities wore off fairly quickly so I just polymorphed and attacked him in mustard form whilst he wasted his spells.
9) Chaotic commands + melee for the mycanoids after having cast blindness on the spore colonies to stop them summoning more. Grease + ranged weapons + melee Anomen with free action for the lizard men.
10) Buffed Oberon with everything I had for the fight with the Tanar'ri and sent him in alone with 2 Aerial servants and 3 skeletons to back him up. His first move was to cast glitterdust to blind the little dudes, he got lucky and blinded the Tanar'ri too. Been a while since I've done this quest but I thought he was heavily magic resistant with good saves. Anyway, with him blinded for 4 rounds right at the start the battle was basically over before it began. I decided not to kill the other Tanar'ri, they are kinda dangerous and it's unlikely i'd get that lucky again.
11) Went mustard jelly form for Tolgerias and his buddy with an initial cloudkill from Aerie. Turns out it's Tolgerias with the summoning spells, which would have been quite dangerous (only 22 hp in mustard jelly form) if they weren't all killed by Aerie's cloudkill immediately after being summoned.
12) The fire room was rather annoying as the efreeti kept coming back but luckily I managed to blind him every time.
13) The Ice room wasn't so bad, a cloudkill, a Grease spell and a bunch of melf's minute meteors did most of the work.
14) Decided to rest before taking on the golems in the next room so I'd have Anomen's 2 Aerial Servants to fight them. Using the Aerial servants as blockers on the thin walkways with Minute Meteors for Aerie and Oberon took them all out fine.

Overall I got some great xp and some really useful items from the quest like the staff of fire and ring of Acuity all without any real danger. With the Stronghold mine I do some quick errands for Aran Linvale killing the vampire on the docks and the traitors in the Five Flagons to push Anomen into level 14 and Oberon into level 12 with his first level 6 spell Contingency. I also had enough money at the end to purchase Oberon the robe of vecna.

I decided to do the Umar Hills shade lord quest next. I won't bore you with the details other than to say a level 14 cleric makes the whole quest rather trivial. Anomen couldn't destroy the skeletal warriors outright so they had to be killed with summons, and two Aerial servants were needed to take out the bone golem but that was basically it, the rest were turned.

The only really interesting things that occurred were
1) a level 12 Mazzy joined the party and
2) I took the risk of attacking the shadow dragon. It actually went rather well. I summoned a bunch of fire elementals using the staff I got from the planar sphere, hasted and resist fear'd them then surrounded Thaxll'ssillyia and had Anomen cast firestorm on the top of them and then stood back until the firestorm was over and he could safely summon his Aerial Servants. All the while a heavily buffed Oberon and Aerie pelted him with Melf's Minute Meteors from the sides whilst Oberon re-summoned more fire elementals as they were killed and Aerie stripped his protections with Breach. It was all over in about 8-9 rounds. Pitty you can't use Firestorm on Firkraag too.

By the end of the quest Mazzy had levelled to 13 and Aerie levelled to 11/11 getting her first level 6 cleric spell allowing the party a third aerial servant.

4) I agree, grease doesn't get much use but there's little else of interest at that level and I do occasionally toss it out to slow groups full of melee enemies. Now that I think about it, Shield would have been a better choice considering I haven't bothered taking Stoneskin.

I have an irrational liking towards Grease, even though I find it difficult getting much mileage out of it. It can be fun pairing it with Web or Stinking Cloud in the early- to mid-game.

The animation on Grease is fun, but the save bonus and lack of true disabling is not.

Protection from Evil and Shield are both excellent L1 Sorc picks.

I might also recommend Chill Touch, which can be very useful against enemy spellcasters in the early to mid game.  Forget the spell description.  It does cold damage and gives +4 Thac0 unenchanted, which will go through stoneskins and PfmW.  Put it in a Minor sequencer with Strength and then polymorph to spider before activating the sequencer to have it instead of the spider claws, but keep the spider's poison.

Caddy's Calendar
After stopping the Talassans in their tracks went off to take over the planar sphere.  The initial halflings were more trouble than I expected - intended that Drizzt would do the hard work, but they were throwing damaging ballistic spells at him and a general melee ensued (in which Aerie was killed).  After that things were fairly straightforward - Drizzt redeemed himself by killing all the demons single-handed.  During the course of the exploration Drizzt actually gained a level - his first since being recruited lo those many moons ago at the beginning of BG1.  The disadvantage of the level was that his saving throws became significantly worse, but he is now able to cast any of the normal ranger spells, rather than being restricted to his original choice.

Finally decided to get on with the main quest and signed up with Aran Linvail.

I had no idea about the +2 save bonus, since there's no mention of it in the spell description. Little wonder the spell's so ineffectual most of the time.

Caddy's Calendar
While waiting for dark to carry out the first task for Aran Linvail went to explore the graveyard dungeons.  Found a broken sword to placate Pai'Na and gave Viconia a bit of practice at controlling undead.  While visiting the temple sewers in this quest foiled an illithid plot to disrupt the city.  Viconia's 3 skeleton warriors were just enough, although Drizzt was killed at one point.

Caddy got to level 20 in this session and gained a higher level ability - my first everPosted Image.

Edit: took a side trip to Watcher's Keep.  The first level was a bit harder than the last time I did it, but managed to finish off the statues eventually.  Then back to the city and invested all my surplus cash in Cromwell upgrades before taking ship for Spellhold.

Back in town I did some shopping. Didn't bother getting the shadow dragon scale.
Picked up a rod of resurrection and a +2 war hammer with electric damage bonus for Anomen.

Did the trademeet quests next. The trolls weren't a problem with summons to tank and Melf's Meteors to finish them with. The druids were killed with web and spider spawn like most human enemies. I was kinda afraid of the Rakshasa as they always seem to be immune to everything so I took no chance and had Anomen cast protection from evil then summoned a Pit Fiend with gate to kill them. Back in trademeet I picked up the belt of inertial barrier, cloak of displacement and tasheron's bow for Mazzy. Back in Althaka I rest a few time so I can finally give my students the task of making my ring of Wizardy.

With just under a million xp on Oberon and several days until my ring of wizardry is completed I decide to do one more quest before heading out to spellhold. The Cult of the Unseeing Eye quest. Unfortunately I don't have the shield of Balduran right now so it could be tough. I stop by the copper coronet when leaving the slums to pick up Yoshimo for traps.

I pick up my cloak of the sewers from a rakshasa and add Keldorn to the party even though he's only got 800 000 xp. None of the undead in the following areas present much of a problem. I debate using the protection from undead scroll I found a while ago to kill the lich with kangaxx's body part but settle for having Anomen cast firestorm along with Keldorn's dispel magic which wipes him out fairly easily. In the next area I look at the screaming face a bunch of times so it summons sword spiders and wandering horrors for xp before moving on. Anomen ends up getting killed by sheer carelessness on my part, I sent him too far ahead and the Gauth's saw him before I was ready. Oberon saves the party by throwing out a sequencer filled with 2 webs then summoning 2 sword spiders while Anomen is brought back to life with the rod of resurrection. Right before this Aerie gained another mage level and memorised Globe of Invulnerability as her first level 6 spell which I was planning to use to kill them :D.

All the undead in the undead area before the beholder nest are killed by Anomen's turn undead except for 1 bone golem, 1 greater mummy and 2 skeleton warriors which are mobbed by 2 hasted Aerial Servants.

The gauths and beholders in the beholder nest aren't any trouble for a properly buffed Oberon and the cultist group in the centre is taken out with the usual 2xWeb minor sequencer + spider spawns. The blind beholder is a pushover with the rift device + melf's minute meteors but for some reason the rift device disappears without being replaced by the depleted one so I have to CLUAConsole it in to return it to the dying god avatar.

Before leaving the sewers I stop by Mekrath's lair and free Haer'Dalis and as Oberon is still only level 12 after this I do the Tanner quest in the bridge district. This gives him enough for sorcerer level 13 where he picks up Stoneskin, Lower Resistance and Protection from Magical Weapons.

His spellbook now looks like this:
Lvl 1: Magic Missile, Identify, Spook, Grease, Blindness
Lvl 2: Mirror Image, Acid Arrow, Glitterdust, Web, Invisibility
Lvl 3: Skull Trap, Slow, Spell Thrust, Melf's Minute Meteors
Lvl 4: Polymorph Self, Spider Spawn, Minor Sequencer, Stoneskin
Lvl 5: Spell Immunity, Spell Shield, Lower Resistance
Lvl 6: Contingency, Protection from Magical Weapons.

I decide to finish the Kangaxx quest before going to spellhold so I head to the bridge district and attempt to replicate my previous fight with the cult lich, this time adding 2 fire elementals from the staff before having Anomen cast Firestorm while Keldorn wakes the Lich. It was a good thing too, because this Lich got off a Gate spell and a summon Efreeti spell but thankfully my constant stream of summons kept them busy during what turned out to be an unexpectedly long fight.

I repeated the process for kangaxx's lich from which was a slightly easier fight even though he hit Anomen with a Horrid Wilting. His demi-lich form wasn't a problem as I simply hid everyone else in the corner whilst Aerie and Oberon tanked him with Spell Immunity Abjuration and Melf's Minute Meteors after Anomen launched the ring of the ram at the start.

With Kangaxx dead I head to the graveyard to confront the vampires.

Entering BG II (and maybe ToB) no-reload challenge:

Here is my character:

Quint, Human, True Neutral (like I get a choice), Totemic Druid
STR 9 DEX 18 CON 16 INT 11 WIS 18 CHA 15

Been playing him for a while, wasn't sure he would get taken out early but he's done a lot of stuff and is still in one piece. His party (and tanking order) is Minsc, Korgan, Anomen, Yoshimo, Quint, and Nalia.

We have completed all of the NPC quests for my party members, except maybe Minsc and the Immesvale quest. Anomen dealt with his loss of his sister in a lawful way.

Chateau Irenicus was ridiculously easy with spirit animals. A lot of enemies couldn't even damage them (it appears you need +1 to damage them). Being immune to normal weapons would make spirit animals pretty powerful in BG 1.

The circus problem was solved without incident. Using spirit animals made the endeavor pretty safe.

Once I got my party in the Copper Coronet (had to kick out Jaheria to get the party I wanted - she was a bit redundant since Quint is a druid), I immediately started on Korgan's quest. Didn't want him complaining when we work on Nalia's quest. I wasn't sure how my party would do in the lower crypts. A lot of potions used up, but we managed to clear them. Fire elementals, airiel servants and spirit animals made this a lot safer. We also finished the rest of the graveyard tombs of undead without incident.

We eventually met up with Korgan's old gang. Call lightning and spirit animals guaranteed his old cronies would have no chance, especially since most of them didn't even have magical weapons. Minsc has really been tearing things up with the Lilacor sword, and Korgan doing great damage with the Frost Axe.

We then headed to D'Arnise keep, though not before saving a poisoned harper. Minsc and Korgan tanked great here, and both Anomen and Quint doing suprising damage with their slings.

We then dealt with the slaver problem at the Copper Coronet and the moored ship with slaves. With the proper buffs and good use of summons, they went down without a problem. Hendak was quite pleased with the freedom of the children.

Docks area quests were our next target. We successfully inflitrated Maevar's guild. As usual, the only question mark (read: run ending possibility) was fighting Rayic Gethras. I made sure quint was protected by every conceivable buff then we battled him. We were succesful. Taking out Maevar's guild went pretty smooth, though by this point the 3 front liners are wearing full plate so am sure that is part of it. Quint always runs around with iron skin active.

We then checked into a missing thief supposedly at the harper compound. We didn't find him but did find an assassin for Xzar. Sorry about that Xzar. What's interesting is that even though Jaheira is not in the party, when we go near the Harper Hold her romantic dialogue comes up - guess the romance is still active, heh.

Found some pirates at the Sea's Bounty. Minsc was immune to charm due to Lilacor, and of course Korgan used his berserk ability to be immune. The party's melee is actually pretty considerable, the pirates went down faster than usual.

Back at the Seven Vales, Mencar insulted the wrong dude (Minsc). Minsc was firing away with his long bow, while lots of summons mostly spirit animals, airiel servant, and fire elementals were keeping Mencar's gang busy. Rest of the party didn't even have to help.

We picked up the daystar at the gate district, using Anomen. Anomen casts Holy Power + Righteous Magic + Draw Upon Holy Might + Sanctuary, then just bashes the chest, grabs the daystar and heads out, the lich being none the wiser.

We directly attacked the Dao Genies in Trademeet. We were successful, even without Nalia who was arrested at this point. We got Nalia back and then solved the druid grove problem. Korgan and Minsc continued their great tanking. Once we got our reward in trademeet, got the Tasheron's bow for Nalia and Blackblood club for Quint. Minsc is now using Flail of Ages + Belm, unless he needs mind immunities in which cases he switches to his Lilacor.

Party is currently trying to rescue Garren Windspear's daughter.

Caddy's Calendar
Went through Spellhold fairly easily until the final battle.  I hadn't remembered the trigger for this and the party were all fatigued and short of spells, which made it harder than it should have been.  A few ADHW were a particular problem and only Caddy and Viconia survived.

Worked through the Sahuagin city without problems, although I haven't been here before.  After finishing I read a walkthrough of the area to see if I missed anything and was annoyed to find I could have had some rather nice gloves for Caddy if I had supported the king (serves me right for looking rather than continuing in blissful ignorance).

The party are currently in the Underdark.  Caddy has just made his first use of greater whirlwind ability to hammer a Baalor into submission for the deep gnomes.

The same thing occurred in my game, just a few days ago. It happens when a character protected by Spell Shield uses the Rift Device. Since the Device's ability is flagged as a magic attack, Spell Shield prevents the depleted version from being created in the caster's inventory.

Alas, Oberon has failed due to a mistake on my part. I was in the Asylum dungeon at the monster summoning book when I reached the beholder. I protected Oberon with everything needed except something to stop Cause Serious Wounds rays and unfortunately he was already slightly wounded giving him low enough HP that two quick Cause Serious Wounds rays took him out before I could do anything.

Sorry to hear the end of your run Blobsy. One thing you could have tried is turn off the AI, and put yourself invisible that way the other guys take the heat (if you don't fight yourself). And as long as you have stone to flesh scrolls on yourself you can fix anyone who gets petrified.

I don't think the spirit animals are immune to +1 weapons. Reason why is the goblins you first encounter doing the Lilacor quest can damage them with melee, but they don't have any +2 weapons. While I did see a lot of so & so immune to my weapons, the spirit animals were also damaged repeatedly. I found +1 arrows on some of the goblins so assume that is what did the damage.

I would have been fine if I'd remembered that last spell immunity.

I definitely think I'm going to keep that spell list in the future though. I usually pick up Stoneskin right from the start but after several run throughs with Cleric/Mages I found that having Polymorph Self and Web+Spider Spawn just made so many fights so ridiculously easy. Pity they would have been almost useless by ToB.

After helping out the gnomes released a few trapped souls and helped a mage take items from the elemental planes - he refused me a fair share of the loot, so I had to take it by force.  Carried on to the east and entered some tunnels I thought led to illithids (where a previous no-reload ended).  However, I was surprised to find myself next to beholders.  A hasty retreat and new approach took care of them and I thought I might as well take out the beholders while I was there.  This was more difficult than I expected - intended for Viconia to do the work with protection from shield of Balduran and cloak of mirroring, but she wasn't up to it.  She was unable to do damage quickly enough to kill the hive mother and was also rapidly depleting my potion stock, so Keldorn had to step in to kill her.  After a couple of imprisonments from elder orbs I was also down to my last freedom scroll so Caddy took his life in his hands and cleared out the remaining enemies (even buffed up and with 100% magic resistance I was a bit fearful that I would discover the hard way that beholders had been given a new ability by one of my mods).

Trying again. Had a fantastic roll on the stats, 88 points and only had to re-roll twice. Kind of a waste for a bounty hunter though :(.

Erica : Elf Bounty Hunter
18 Str, 19 Dex, 16 Con, 11 Int, 10 Wis, 14 Cha
points in longsword, katana, short bow and single weapon style.

Thief Skill Points:
45% Open Locks
45% Find Traps
90% Pick Pockets
35% Move Silently
30% Hide in Shadows
0% Detect Illusions
100% Set Traps

Chose Female3 for the voice for that delightfully cheerful "Yep." when you select her.

Decided to free Jaheira but not Minsc. The starting dungeon was no trouble. My main killing methods were:
Protection From Fire (Jaheira) on bait + Fireball from Imoen
Traps from Erica
Summoning nymphs from Jaheira for nice save or else spells.

The only thing of note was that just about every kobold group I came across had a scroll of identify or two. I had around 6 overall. Got the Ulvaryl kill again too for that nice 8000xp.

Quint FINAL Update:

Quint and company rescued Garren Windspear's daughter successfully. However, when we tried to take Firkraag to task we ran into a problem. Firkraag was near death, but he first managed to do this:

Posted Image

I was thinking yikes losing two characters that is bad enough but looking like Firkraag will die soon he is still near death. But despite being protected by a protection from fire scroll this happened to Quint:

Posted Image

I will re-roll a new character in BG 1.

Managed to get my revenge on the illithids.  With 2 greenstone amulets + several chaotic commands available it was pretty straightforward.  Only problem was in getting through the locked doors after escaping from the arena.  I spent ages trying to bash them open and looking for potential other exits - eventually, after resting, the Githyanki came through one and let me in to the rest of the city.

Moved on to the Drow city and done a couple of little tasks there.  Unfortunately, Aerie has just decided to leave the party; after ruthlessly sleeping with me she seems to want to move on.  Not sure if this is automatic or if I just chose the wrong dialogue option.  I think the Solaufein mod is supposed to allow him to join the party, so I'm hoping he will give me this option at some point in order to get back up to strength.

Yeah Grond0 if you sleep with Aerie it "rattles her cage" and she needs some space. Woman thing I guess. She would have stayed in your party if you had told her now wasn't the time (and she would have agreed with you in the morning). Hopefullly Imoen is still in your party for some mage power.

I think that you have to wait until she rapes you if you want to keep her. At least when I was playing a paladin and wanted to wait until marriage, she did that and was happy.

Successfully completed the drow city and escaped without loss.  Checking the walkthrough (as I'm now beyond any previous gaming experience) I only missed a few minor things in the city, but annoyingly failed to get the girdle of frost giant strength on the way out.

Back in the city intended to prepare for the reckoning with Bodhi with a visit to Cromwell to see what upgrades he could offer.  However, on the way Caddy was waylaid by some Githyanki.  They shouldn't have been much more than a nuisance, but after so long on the road Imoen absentmindedly cast a spell and the leaders of the cowled wizards teleported inPosted Image.  In the ensuing melee Imoen paid for her mistake as she was petrified and then blasted.  I would actually have had time to enflesh her during the battle, but there was so much going on that I didn't get round to it and more equipment was lost for good.

Nalia was also killed, but rose up from the dead.  After a bit of rest the reduced party went after Bodhi.  She snatched Solaufein, but the remaining 4 were determined to press on.  The upstairs crew were fairly easy, but Solaufein himself caused much more trouble and the 2 remaining characters had to retreat upstairs to hide before sneaking back down and using rods of resurrection to get the party back together.  After another retreat (and use of nearly the last of the restoration scrolls) the party was buffed up a bit more thoroughly and this time won through.  Bodhi herself was deprived of support by discharging an entire wand of fire into the final chamber and she went down relatively easily.

A handily placed book gave guidance on how to restore Solaufein from the dead, though with his original equipment also disappearing he's now rather sparsely kitted out for the trip to the elven city.

Edit: Solaufein became my downfall in the elven city.  Lolth apparently sent Archcryssa to punish him and just for fun said that if he died in a solo fight so did the rest of the partyPosted Image.  With few spells and not much equipment he was outclassed in a power fight and the teleport function preventing him from running away didn't help!  Archcryssa hit him with a triple contingency lower resistance at the start of the battle and he soon failed against a power word stun (the cloak of mirroring not helping against this) providing some nibbling practice for the revenge spiders.

Still - made a significant advance over previous maximum progress, so not a bad run.  I wasn't really getting the most out of the characters by the end as buffing up was too much hassle - I think I might try a solo run next time.

Please don't abuse that word, wise. It doesn't make you look cool. There's a pretty significant difference between one needing space until one feels ready, and rape.

I wasn't given the option of saying no.

If it had been a woman who hadn't been given the option, it would have been considered rape, certainly in most western countries. They call it date rape.

There have been numerous cases just in the UK where I believe that people convicted of rape should have been found not guilty. I know one person personally of whom that is true.

Probably you and I have the same opinions as to what should constitute rape. I was however using it in the sense that it is used (wrongly in my opinion) by our courts.

Diary of Fugit

I cleared the floor where the chromatic demon resides, not including him.

When I went outside to raise the fallen and heal them, (Nalia and Amber) I was told to return to the D'Arnise keep as it was being invaded. I did so and killed Lord Roenall without any injury whatsoever. Posted Image

I went to the Docks and added some horns to a helmet.

(I am wondering if I missed out on some goodies by only killing Lord Roenall. Does anyone know if his cohorts had anything of value and if killing them has a detrimental effect?)
