Miseri's Musings No. 10
Cohrvale was looking for a fight; no way he would put us to flight.
Waiting at the City Gates; Kagain will share the party's fates.
The next to join the party's Jan; if you like stealing he's your man.
Pickpocketing can get you mauled; so only tried it on Ribald.
It was a race against the clock; but managed to return Rylock.
The harper's carried out a check; our mission: take out Prebek.
Montaron used to be one of the party; the harper's stopped him feeling so hearty.
Galvarey did not seem fair; now he can no longer care.
Ployer had a score to settle; but Jaheira's now in fine fettle.
Now you see it, now you don't; Kalah is one who won't.
The one who liked to take human skins; is on the run for his sins.
A party in the Seven Vales; found an elemental hard as nails.
Nalia joined us a bit too late; to pick some locks she'll have to wait.
The gladiators at the Coronet; were glad the party to have met.
It only showed on the screen as text; but it's a talking sword: whatever next!
The slavers compound is closed down; it must be time we left town.

As Imoen is a bard in this game I set Nalia up as a thief (she immediately dualled to a mage, but now will be able to open locks and detect traps later in the game).  She was level 11 when she joined so it will take a while for her to get her thieving abilities back.  One death thus far - Yoshimo mis-counted the number of invisible thugs and didn't take a potion (and died to a 3rd backstab). Jan's light-fingered touch has helped provide the party with good equipment for the road and they've just arrived at the de'Arnise hold.

Party is now:
Miseri - L10 berserker, 99 HP (will dual to druid at L13)
Kagain - L10 berserker, 92 HP
Jaheira - L9 fighter / L11 druid, 74 HP
Jan - L10 illusionist / L11 thief, 46 HP
Nalia - L9 mage / L11 thief, 53 HP
Yoshimo - L12 bounty hunter, 80 HP

The de'Arnise hold is free; or at least it's held by me.
To find yourself in waters deep; try a trip to Watcher's Keep!
If you're in need of a flying dagger; Delosar's is the place to stagger.

After seeing off the trolls (spirit trolls are less of a menace when only one character in the party is affected by unholy blight) the run nearly came to a grinding halt at Watchers Keep.  Inventory management was being a pain and several items on the first level would help with this.  The first batch of statues caused problems, though no casualties, but the second were clearly too much for the party.  The reserve plan was activated to leave the Keep and rebuff, but unfortunately a gated demon teleported in and blocked the way.  A couple of bone fiends then appeared (not sure if the demon or one of the statues summoned them) and proceeded to wreak havoc.  Despite chewing up huge numbers of potions the apparently unlimited cones of cold took down 4 characters before Miseri and Jan managed to run away.

After raising the party, courtesy of the handy cleric outside the door, they came back and got their equipment and then tried to start the fight again (I didn't want to rest as this would presumably allow the statues to refresh all their spells and abilities).  This time was very similar - a cacofiend and 2 bone fiends teleported in and 3 NPCs kicked the bucket.  Now down to a handful of gold pieces the party had one more try.  This time the summoning spells appeared to be exhausted and Yoshimo managed to drag the statues to their doom one by one.

Back in the city Miseri was keen to get a magic throwing dagger and the mercenaries of Riatvin obliged by being obnoxious enough to justify their removal.

Remember Grond0, for us both to be posting here, you gotta stay alive, kapiche? Trying to die in Watcher's Keep doesn't follow this guideline...

Sorry about that - I'll lay off Watcher's Keep for a whilePosted Image.  I've done the top level a couple of times before and didn't remember it being that difficult. I think my settings on SCS this time may have boosted it's difficulty a bit.

Those statues can be a bit tough even without SCS. I usually use a lot of trap cheese before triggering them to make them a bit easier and of course lots of summons.

Miseri's Musings No. 12
Uncle Lester opened his mound; but he's back safely underground.
An orphan girl in need of care; now has a paladin's life to share.
A town in dread of druids dark; and starved of goods to sell,
now has my statue in the park; and extra tales to tell.
A sea troll Roger seems to hate; has met a rather nasty fate.
If of beholders you're not a fan; then get the shield of Balduran!
Rakshasas and bandits in the sewer; of both there now are rather fewer.
Kagain has been getting much too scared; but there's nothing Keldorn has not dared.

A couple of nasty moments in completing the Trademeet quests.  Firstly Miseri's berserking ran out when under attack from a host of myconoids and he was immediately confused - fortunately the fungus warriors don't like fireballs and Miseri had taken the precaution earlier of swigging a fire resistance potion.  Secondly when Miseri ended up fighting Faldorn in the druid pit - the dialogue choices had all referred to Jaheira, but presumably these were over-turned by the SCSII tweak to allow any character to complete the druid stronghold.  I don't normally cheat here, but Miseri would have had no chance against Faldorn with no equipment so I did let the party throw Miseri a few things (potions of antidote against spider poison, speed to stay ahead of Faldorn and her fire elemental, stone form for the saving throw bonus and regeneration to keep hits up under pressure of creeping doom - as well as her throwing dagger).  With these the fight was pretty straightforward, although I winced every time Miseri was hit by a chromatic orb (she had a negative saving throw against this, but I still worried).

Back in the city I traded in Kagain for Keldorn.  Kagain was great in BG1, where I made substantial use of his personal regeneration to avoid resting, but he has performed poorly in BG2.  This is largely because his morale seems far worse than in BG1.  The last straw was in Watcher's Keep when he started running away while he had 68 HP (admittedly 2 other NPCs were already dead at this time, but that's when you need your remaining party to hang tough).  The party now has no evil characters, so we'll see how Keldorn fits in for a while.

With Keldorn being an inquisitor, and the most deadly enemies being mages, it's hard to see how Keldorn will NOT be an effective member of your group. Good luck and yeah Kagain does have morale issues.

Lissa's child was very sick; but an illithid's help did the trick.
Keldorn's marriage is going wrong; he needs time off, but not too long.
The next to leave the party is Nalia; but Isaea's plans end in failure.
A child's spirit is obsessed; a teddy bear will help him rest.
A genie in thrall to rakshasa; I wish for him to have no master.
The innkeeper says no room for me; I evict a lich to make one free.
A fallen paladin is such a disaster; a little push and they fall even faster.
Gave Pai'Na a broken sword; wish I'd killed her for her hoard.
Those slaver ambushers are far too keen; their backstabs can be really mean.
Boys will be boys the saying goes; a sword apiece and they'll stay on their toes.
That must be a valuable pullet; it's got a gem stuck in its gullet!
A mage assaulted by his golem creation; we prevented his trepidation.
The guilty party must have been a wolf; it wasn't us said Madulf.

Not too many problems this time.  One amusing battle against the City Gates lich.  He cast remove magic on Jaheira to get rid of her protection from undead and I thought I would probably have to haul out a freedom scroll, but instead the lich concentrated on summoning swords.  Fortunately he had already cast web and the swords obviously had very poor saving throws against this - I'll have to remember that for the future.
Posted Image
Only other slight difficulty was the slaver ambush with all their backstabbing thieves.  3 NPCs went down there, although the overall battle was never in doubt.  However, I really must concentrate on ensuring magic users always travel protected, e.g. by stoneskin or invisibility.

Miseri's Musings No. 14
The Shade Lord wasn't feeling too well; after Keldorn used dispel.
Darcin Cole failed to leave the map; but no friends appeared in Yoshie's trap.
The shadow dragon started fast; and of the party 4 breathed their last.
A hoard of mithril in the ground; but just one medallion was all we found.
The planar sphere can no more roam; now it's just another home.
Miseri has dualled at last; and goes up levels very fast!
The child spirits can now sleep; Neb's head is buried very deep.
Lathander's ring stolen away; but the thieves were made to pay.

The shadow dragon caused a bit of a problem when he took the initiative and attacked before I had done any buffing.  His first breath killed two NPCs and 2 more breaths instant killed another each.  Meanwhile Miseri was hiding behind NPCs and summons and taking a toll of the dragon with his throwing dagger.  Fortunately Nalia actually managed to save against instant death and survive being breathed upon (or Miseri would probably have had to run away) and an ogre from her wand delivered the coup de grace, just before Miseri's dagger could strike home.

The planar sphere was pretty straightforward, although Miseri did have to save against a demon death gaze (when the demon meanly picked her out over the heads of 4 meleeing summons and a further 4 NPCs including 2 casters).  Although Lavok said the sphere should now be my home the cowled wizards don't seem interested in providing any apprentices, which is a shame.

With Miseri reaching L13 at the end of the sphere she dualled to druid.  Then spent quite a bit of time tidying up inventory and watching Nalia learning spells.  As a result of that Miseri crept up to L13 as a druid.  Still needs over 800,000 XP to recover her berserking abilities, but avoids that period where her contribution is restricted.  Jaheira left the party in a huff, which I hadn't really intended at that point (though as the dialogue pointed that way I had fortunately already relieved her of equipment), but with Miseri now a druid Jaheira was always going to go fairly soon anyway.  Anomen has been recruited as a replacement.

Miseri's Musings No. 15
Ruhk likes to play with fire; Jan now has no such desire.
Those ancient vampires were a pain; had to return again and again.
With Firkraag feeling under par; traps on the run were the coup de grace.
A pirate cave behind the inn; whose members will no longer sin.
Sold my websack wand - oh dear; it now has just 1 charge I fear.
A graveyard cult obsessed by blood; has been reduced to stones and mud.
Paladin quests have an untimely end; 'twas no imposter, but a friend.
The sewer liches liked teleport; some of them in traps were caught.
Beholders using telekinesis!; ranged attacks are my new thesis.
Finally the Eye is dead; in the temple I find a bed.
A cleric's necklace has just flown; from under the nose of a clone.

The hardest fight in this series was with the vampires in Firkraag's dungeon.  The multiple clouds of bats inflicted significant damage while their regeneration made them hard to hit.  Eventually I was reduced to popping in and out of the area to pick them off one at a time.  Firkraag himself was not going down easily, so I set traps at the ends of his cave and dragged him back and forward until he collapsed.

Annoyingly the websack wand has a bug and is sold by merchants with only 1 charge - the forum said that this was corrected in an earlier version, but not for me apparently.  I had only actually used it once in anger, but thought I would get it recharged at the same time as refilling my rod of resurrection in order to check how many charges it had.

I had never done the paladin quests before and thus was unsure how the last one should go.  I used Keldorn to try out all the paladin powers (detect evil, dispel magic and true sight), but there was nothing obvious happening and eventually I killed what I thought was an imposter - this seemed to be confirmed when I did not take a reputation hit.  Unfortunately that proved not to be the case and I got thrown out of the Order.  Having now googled the quest line I can see the logic of the encounter, but it would have been fairer if there had been some change of dialogue to indicate the expected result, e.g. a statement to the effect "you can see I'm not evil, now let me take the girl".  On its own detect evil is not a reliable indicator of how a human is going to act - just look at Jaheira and Yoshimo.

One of the beholders stole the shield of Balduran in my first encounter with them.  Although this wasn't entirely unexpected as I remembered this possibility from the readme, they then moved much quicker than I expected and continued to fire at Miseri even after she should have been well out of sight - fortunately she saved against a flesh to stone attack.

After that I thought if they were going to be cheesy so would I be and killed all the remaining beholders with fireballs / cloudkills guided in by invisible scouts.

If you think the beholder shield-stealing is cheesy, you might want to turn it off - there's a console option to do so (see the readme).

Thanks - I did think about it when I loaded the mod, but concluded it was a reasonable response to the overwhelming power of the shield and it would not be a bad idea to force me to use different tactics.  My comment was not intended to imply that the shield stealing per se was cheesy, but was pointed at the ability of the beholders to continue to target my main character once he was out of sight (to provide a justification for using cowardly tactics myself - if any more justification than a no-reload is required).

No-reload challenge continued from here
Intending on doing a trilogy noreload run, so far so good with bg1 out of the way but i think im going to hit some serious headaches from now on, i found this recent run of bg1 (through bgt) somewhat easier mainly due to playing through it 20 odd times with a few of them with scs1, where as with bg2/tob i've only ever beat the game once modless, i've tried to play it in the past with a ton of mods before but i usually get either just out of the starting dungeon or just into chapter 2 before i i just stop bothering with it.

First time using BGT with a ridiculous amount of mods running so heres hoping i can finish a trilogy noreload run.

At the moment i've got out of the starting dungeon and i am currently just exploring the surrounding area with minsc, jaheira and yoshimo, iren's dungeon wasnt too hard but there was a serious moment in the furnace room when the mage started summoning tons of monsters and had my pc feared and posioned, luckily managed to get to him before he got an early grave, also seemed to have found an extra item thats not usually in here, semjas cloak that i picked up from his corpse in baldurs gate nice little momento go along with the sword of chaos.

Congratulations and best of luck in continuing your run.

This is introduced by BGTTweaks.  The same component also lets you bring in Koveras' ring of protection from BG1 and also upgrades it so it is seriously worthwhile having.

In vanilla the ring is a +1 ring of protection. With the tweak it's now +2; also has 5% MR and is not bound by the normal AC restriction, i.e. it can stack with magic armour or another ring etc (this is a major benefit for me, although it won't mean anything if you've removed this restriction anyway).

Miseri's Musings No. 16
Miseri has finally lived down to her name,
An end to her search for fortune and fame,
Into the blackness her soul doth merge,
While Imoen pipes a tuneless dirge.

After completing nearly all the chapter 2 quests Miseri had finally regained her berserking abilities and the party set off for Spellhold.  After being dumped by Bodhi they were working their way back out when they came across a party of undead.  No-one had any buffs (must stop doing that) and they quickly retreated into another room to prepare for battle.  Unfortunately the lich summoned a baalor, who teleported into the midst of the group and instant-cast (I thought I had set SCS not to allow this, but it appears not) a symbol stun.  All 6 of the party were stunned, which seemed unfortunate to say the least.  Miseri had 65% MR and a saving throw of 2, Nalia had 30% MR and a saving throw of 1.  The rest of the party were rather worse off, but even saving at -4 I would have only expected 2-3 of the party to be affected.

The baalor started off by chopping Edwin's head off with a vorpal attack.
Posted Image

He then spent quite a while attacking Keldorn, mixing physical attacks in with symbol deaths (which everyone saved against repeatedly - too late he cried!).  Eventually Nalia was cut down and then Anomen soon followed to another vorpal.
Posted Image

I was just starting to hope against hope that the baalor would take so long that Miseri would come out of her stun when a Glabrezu teleported in.
Posted Image

And it didn't take long for the ample lady to start exercising her vocal chords.

Does that mean you didn't make it Grond0? Grats on making it so far with hard settings. I thought I remember someone saying they always walked around with chaotic commands on them, could have been handy here.

To clarify - this is undocumented (the spell doesn't list stun as something it protects you from), but Chaotic Commands does protect against opcode45 (stun) that would protect against Symbol Stun, chromatic Orb, and psionic stun.  There's older posts that it does NOT protect against Power Word, Stun but i haven't run into that much.

I hardly ever use buff spells for general walking around - pretty much the only one is stoneskin and even that is used inconsistently.  I dare say this is one reason why I keep dyingPosted Image.  However, it was probably at least as much the enemy use of teleport as stun that caused me the problem.  As noted much earlier in Miseri's journey I had real difficulties in Watcher's Keep as a result of this - the enemy is not only teleporting, but going to an unseen destination (presumably they have a wizard's eye spell permanently up or something like that).  Most of the SCSII tactics are similar to those in BG1 and I therefore have experience in them, but I need to think a bit more about how to counter teleportation.

CC will protect against the stunning, but the demon is likely to dispel it (improved Balors cast at 24th level) and ofc vorpal hits are very bad. They can be beaten at low levels with some luck, but for an Ironman game I try to avoid them (and Wizards that summon them) before the Underdark.

I think the XP threshold for a lich to spawn in spellhold is 2,000,000 for the PC. A lich and his summons are not fun to fight without any of your magical gear.

Update on Candar the dwarven Berserker:

Hey yeah he is still alive. Been spending time working, with wife and kids and Everquest, so not a whole lot of time for BG. But got some time so here's an update:

Was hard to decide to keep Haer'Dalis or Minsc. Decided to give Haer'Dalis another chance. So the party (Haer'Dalis, Candar, Jaheira, Yoshimo, Nalia, Aerie) decided they were prepared to go after Imoen. But first the Shadow Thieves insisted on helping them with their guild war.

We were to be backup for one of Aran's agents, Mook, but she took a foolish gamble by getting too close to an unknown person and got killed. Haer'Dalis is using the +3 dagger that has a sleeping proc and the +2 katana that gives extra spells - somehow the sleep proc made the vampire sleep. We hit him with massive damage but the vampire didn't die, Haer'Dalis managed to put him to sleep several times. Eventually the vampire woke up and ran away.

We reported to Aran Linvail. He said two members were trying to defect and we should pretend to defect with them and find out the enemy's hide-out. Why his own men couldn't do this is beyond me. And do we really look like thieves with our full plate? In any case we did as he asked and had to kill the defectors and the contact. We did get the information Aran wanted.

Got a messenger to that Candar urgently needed to return to the D'Arnise Keep. We did so, and found Lord Roenall demanding that Candar hand over the land. If his son is any indication, Candar thought that would not be doing any favors for the people in Candar's land. They had to put up with a troll invasion, shouldn't have to put up with an inconsiderate leader. So Candar held his ground and told Lord Roenall to get off his land. Lord Roenall said he would be back with an army. Well if they are led by people like Isea, it shouldn't be too much a problem.

Returned to the docks and reported to Aran Linvail. He said he needed us to deal with the vampire's lair directly. Really? The six of us are more powerful than his entire guild? We see like 40 thieves running around. Candar didn't like it, but Imoen was worth the trouble.

So Candar and the gang head to the vampire's lair. Candar and Haer'dalis did get level drained a few times, but Aerie was nice enough to help restore them. She kept complaining that she never walked so much in her life, but Candar said to grin and bear it.

Most vampires fell pretty fast. Haer'Dalis was using the drinker to be immune to charm. For the ambush at the lower level, the party buffed to the max and did Sunray via the Daystar - took minimal damage. Lassal threatened the party, but couldn't not last long at all when the party concertrated fire on him.

Tanova was a different matter. We sent a ton of summons after her and tried to stay out of visual range, but she just slaughtered our summons. Enough was enough, plus she saw us and we charged her and she fell, thanks partly to a true seeing by Aerie.

Candar had a bad feeling when we were staking the vampires and had Yoshimo lay a few traps. Yoshimo managed to hurt himself a lot, but did get 2 traps laid. The last vampire was staked and Bodhi appeared. She had things to say, but we didn't believe her then we fought. Haer'Dalis got level drained pretty bad so fled while the rest of the party unloaded on Bodhi. Bodhi wisely decided to retreat after a short battle. No one was killed.

We reported to Aran our success, and he sent us off to Brynnlaw to spellhold and hopefully Imoen. We got ambushed by some vampires when we got off Saemon's boat, but daystar again made the fight trivial. Some pirates tried to engage us, one at a time. Predictably they did not meet with success.

We obtained Ginia and and her brother's freedom. Was a sad story. Tried to meet our contact Sanik but he got assassinated. Ended up breaking up a prostitution/slavery ring and saving Sanik's fiancee. She knew a Captain Golin that could give us some info on how to get to Spellhold. He said there's a Cowlie who has a wardstone which allows him travel. We tried tot talk to Perth the Adept, but he wasn't himself and we had to cut him down.

Finally we make the trek to spellhold. Just before entering, Candar asked if Yoshimo would like to be able to wear full plate so he takes less a beating. He agreed and dualed to fighter. Candar convinced Yoshimo that Yoshimo is so powerful now he doesn't need any of his equipment except for his non-magical arrows. Then we entered the asylum and met it's coordinator. The voice sounded oddly famliar, but didn't seem hostile so the party continued inside.

Turned out it was a trap! The party was helplessfully put to sleep. When Candar awoke he found himself in a glass cage. Irenicus said Candar wouldn't live and cast a spell and put Candar in a dream state. An avatar of Bhaal was there who was out for blood, but Candar managed to both outwit and outfight Bhaal.

When Candar came to, Yoshimo the traitor was gone and Imoen rejoined the party. So we have Imoen now, just have to get our souls back and repay Irenicus for what he has done.

Any of you guys got some tips on the bes way to deal with scs2? I'm just hanging out in the copper coronet now trying to figure out how best to proceed with the quests I'm picking up, party level is 9 with basic equipment and very very little cash, i figure the keep is out of the question at this time, so is any of the stronghold quests, thought about korgans quest but theres probably a ton of highly resistant undead down there.. pondering the actual coronet take down quest maybe the slavers.. im honestly just crippled with indecision and just right out fear ill wander round a corner into a lich and its game over man.. im thinking maybe just explore the city and do the little quests (or the ones that seem little) to build up gold/xp? its not helping that im trying to roleplay here and im urged to go the de'arnise keep asap.

The slavers are not much affected by SCSii, so that would be a good place to start. I've not done it myself, but remember someone saying they tend to start Aran's quests very early in order to acquire the amulet of power. That makes vampires a bit less deadly.

One thing I do sometimes do, depending on my personal integrity settings, is allow stealing from shops.  It makes a huge difference to your combat readiness if you take advantage of this.  I've only once gone one step further and allowed resale of stolen items before selling them again - you can build up more gold than you need in a lifetime within a few minutes of doing this.  You might want to consider this as a one-off, although I found it detracted from the point of doing quests too much to want to do it regularly.

If you also convert stolen spell scrolls into XP you can easily double your starting XP to give yourself even more of a boost.

A Candar the dwarven berserker update: Spellhold/City of Caverns/Underdark

So Candar and gang (Haer'Dalis, Candar, Jaheira, Imoen, Nalia, Aerie) work out the puzzles in spellhold. Most of the battles were like clockwork, no one died. For the encounter with Bodhi only Candar faced but but she quickly fled. Once out of the maze we met Sameon Havarian. We don't trust him, but he suggested we use the inmates. More help is always welcome. We had to bribe Lonk, but we had plenty of cash so that wasn't a problem.

So finally battled Irenicus. Imoen Breached, the other arcane users fire off magic missiles, Jaheira threw her dagger and Candar proceeded to put the beat down on Irenicus. He quickly had enough and fled, though not before sending some assassins after us and Yoshimo. Yoshimo, being the level 1 fighter that he is, wasn't much of a problem.

We had to help Saemon get a ship for travel by stealing the Pirate Lord's horn. Once that was done and fought off some pirates we were off. But after a while we got boarded by Githyanki, and while that battle was going on got boarded by Sahuagin. We arrived in the City of Caverns, and helped a king put down a rebellion.

We went went down a rope and found us in the Underdark. There were 3 mind flayers north of us. We sent a single mordy sword, with haste and chaotic commands, and it pwned the mind flayers. Lot of battles here, trapped souls, Drow war parties, spore colonies, and tons of elementas. These battles got both Haer'Dalis and Nalia to 15, they can cast skeletal warriors now.

We felt confident enough to try some of the tunnels. We explored the Kao-Tao lair. Pets and Haer'Dalis did most of the fighting. The party buffed to the max with the best summons possible and took down the shadow demon knights.

I avoided the beholder's lair, mainly because my last run ended there. But I think I figured out how to the "squid" city no-reload, and so went there. I cleared the city without dieing. Haer''Dalis died once but all things considered he tanked great.

So we are off to sell and then talk to Adalon. Am sure that will be an interesting conversation.
