Been exploring Athkatla for the past few days, picked up anomen for awhile then replaced with viconia, did abit of the dungeon crawlers mod but not left for the island yet, took out the slavers and let hendak take over the coronet, got a ton of quests for out of the city and such, did some misc quests from quest packs and such like the loan shark.

Explored abit of the graveyard too, did some graverobbing, at night, as you do, for any thing to help me out at this stage, found a talking corpse wanting to say goodbye to his wife, and came across a crypt king, he said he was about to kill us for disturbing his rest but we just ran for it, luckily he didnt follow us out (he had a lich animation so i figure im not getting into a fight with this guy just yet) this kind of thing happend twice after, in the docks i went upstairs in valygars home to discover a gnome mage and two familliars, remembering this was a tastics boss i just legged it out of the house, again he didnt follow me, then i entered a trapped door in the bridge district, went downstairs, saw a huge crypt and remembered who the hell was in there and ran for it.

Currently doing the quest for the theatre looking for their actor, im in the sewers of the temple district and have just fought a rasksasa and his kobolds, and a large party of bandits who had some nice equipment.

Weird thing was that the full plate mail +1 the dwarf had on him had a different white icon and different colour scheme to that of a normal dark full plate mail +1, yet same description? i checked the files and the normal fpm+1 is plat05.itm and this one is plat14.itm never came across this before.. the icon looks tob-ish and i never did play through soa with tob installed so maybe they changed some of it, same stats tho.. very weird.

I'm entering Oberon, a Chaotic Good elven Sorcerer just recently arrived from the city of Baldur's Gate, where he rather easily defeated Sarevok, vanquished Aec'Letec and generally kicked ass and took names. Stats are 10/20/16/15/18/19, and he finished BG1 at level ten and 280k exp.

I'm looking forward to being utterly crushed by SCS2 mages. Or possibly aTweaks fiends. PLACE YOUR BETS, FOLKS!

Haven't gotten around to doing much yet: went through Irenicus' dungeon, where another Ogre Mage fell to the power of the heart, a number of duergar were slaughtered by Minsc after being slowed by Oberon, and a terrifying vampire demonstrated her awesome powers against some hapless Shadow Thieves.

Or she tried to, anyway. Go Shadow Thieves!

Posted Image
"Didn't see that coming."

Also took care of Kalah and his illusionary minions at the circus, after which Oberon hit level 11 (and finally got that sweet, sweet Stoneskin); now wondering what to do next. So... many... choices...

Hi All,

I'm glad to see that there is still some activity here. I wish all the current challegers the best of luck!

I'm feeling semi-tempted to play BG again.

Some of you may be wondering what happened to  my Melee Sorceress, Alastria. Her run was put on hold when I became busy and then held further still when I started fearing SCSII Slayer Irenicus. The thing that gave me pause was Angiras's report that his Warrior couldn't hit the Slayer without using Critical Strike. That seemed  an ominous sign for my girl so I decided to hold off for awhile. Then, I basically chickened out entirely.

She's still alive in the sense that she hasn't died in her No Reload. But since it's been so long since I've used her -and her build isn't exactly user friendly- I'm pretty certain I'd end up marching her off to her death if I resumed her game. And I don't want to see her die.

I'm still tempted to give her a chance, but I'm leaning towards starting a new game. If anyone has any clever ideas for a character, let me know. I'm definitely open to suggestions.

Anyhoo. Best of luck to the current challengers once again. I hope to join you soon.

Cheers,

A.

Welcome back!

I'm afraid I have no clever ideas, as my future runs mostly include builds you have already done (bounty hunter, avenger). Early testing on a no-reload of my "Evil" sorcerer have gone nowhere, for the following reasons:

1. "Evil" spells are not strong enough. In particular many important creatures in the mid to late game are protected from Death magic.
2. Picking too many evil spells leaves you weak defensively (and offensively, as you often can't do enough damage to win since direct damage, with the possible exception of Skull Trap and ADHW, is not very evil).
3. Demons are powerful, but it's hard to make them attack your enemies effectively. Too often, they stand around doing nothing, and enemies do not attack the demons (after I go invis, they follow my position). This may be an issue with my current build.

I hope you will consider completing Alastria's quest.  I think that character is quite interesting.  If you don't what will become of her?

My PC and Valygar could hit the Slayer more often than not, and Mazzy hardly missed him at all, I don't think either of my fighters even had critical strike HLA for this battle (though we could dispel his protections, which Angiras's solo fighter could not). No one died, although the teleporting demons made it messier than I liked...

I'd play through it again, but I want to try v16 of SCS (and perhaps the next version of Item revisions and Spell revisions).

I have similar feelings here Alesia. It's been awhile since I've had "Baldur's Gate" time. I've been thinking about going back in especially since now I came across a computer with microsoft excel, I can now randomize everything in a character set up. No more rolling a dice....

Interesting.

My main concern at this point is that I'm out of practice with Alastria. Her build works, but it's labor intensive and doesn't allow much margin for error...

Here's an idea. Maybe I can setup a parrallel save and run her through Watcher's Keep as "exercise". Then -when I feel ready- I can boot up her No Reload game and send her off to Suldanessalar.

That makes sense to me.

In any event, I'll be around. I'll let you know what I decide.

Best,

A.

I've also been reading up on this thread while going through BG1, and Alastria was an interesting concept, so if you decide to pick her up again, I for one would be interested in seeing how far she makes it (and if she survives through ToB, even).

Failing that, full party runs with unusual combinations (either with edited BioWare NPCs or completely original ones) are also something I enjoy reading about.

The randomization process wasn't perfect however plenty better then the dice rolling I had done in previous runs. On the thief skills I chose to pick what attribute to input points and then I took the entire amount of points the thief had remaining and randomized that sample size. I did get kind of annoyed by the process so the thief points are not entirely randomized a few points here and there.
Another thing I should mention. Whenever I created a new random cell, this reset all the other cells I had in the spreadsheet. What I did was if I had finished with a character, I'd just use all the rolls that the cells had in them instead of rerolling them again(something I found was pointless to do). In any case, here is my party

For thieves I'll post skill point allocations and not the weapon pips, if anyone wants to know them I'll gladly provide. I'm lazy...

Comments: I'm surprised I even rolled a mage what with the crazy way I was rolling this to begin with. A surprisingly well rounded party to get into the meatgrinder. I'm pretty tentative on expectations right now, we'll see how it goes.

A little progress.

Went to the Slums District, made our pact with Gaelan Bayle, headed to the local dive for some refreshments. As soon as we enter, Oberon is challenged to a fight by a local brawler. This keeps happening to us a lot, doesn't it?

Posted Image
"At least one of the two combatants thought this was a fair fight."

Before taking doing anything more than that, we get one more member to our party roster:

Posted Image
"Oberon hides far away like a coward. Damn magic cops."

Once we're back at the Coronet, we butt our  heads into more local business. Guards attack us by surprise at the back, which get Jaheira held and Minsc charmed. Oberon is fast enough with a dispel to save the latter, but not the former.

Next up, we go get Hendak's cell's key from the Beastmaster. He is unpleasantly surprised by Minsc's Charm Animal ability:

Posted Image
"Et tu, Tabitha?"

As a favor to Hendak, we take care of the rest of the slavers in the slums, which takes care of our business there for the moment. Minsc is left behind after he almost killed Yoshimo while in a berserk rage at the slaver hold. The remaining four of us quickly pop into the Government District in order to buy the spellcasting license, and then take up an assignment from Renal Bloodscalp to infiltrate Mae'Var's guildhall, steal the Weathermistress' pendant and so on. Nothing all that interesting happens, other than that on our way to the Temple District, we get attacked by slavers:

Posted Image
"You have been waylaid by enemies and must defend yourself."

They are a bit annoying, actually, the thief managing to kill Yoshimo with the help of his endless Invisibility Potions, but we manage.

Then we get waylaid by enemies for a second time. This time it's ruffians harassing a Harper. Geez, the crime problem in this town is ridiculous. Oberon uses his remaining spells to take care of these ones, but we still manage.

AND THEN WE GET WAYLAID AGAIN.

This time, we just run away, making it to the area transition just before a Hold Person hits us.

We return to the docks without incident, where we decide to go do Edwin's quest and deal with Rayic Gethras.

Posted Image
"Divine Wrath: I had this new Bhaalspawn ability in BG1, but never used it. It's actually pretty cool."

Viconia beats up Stone Golems with Stoneskin, Mirror Image, Flind Form and Strength.

Gethras himself turns out to be a lot tougher than we expected. Viconia turns into a Jelly and hoes up to soak up the mage's spells, and it works fine in the beginning. He tries a dispel, which doesn't work. Oberon pops up quickly to summon some skellies and then runs back down again. Gethras throws a Teleport Field, which still doesn't worry Viconia too much.

Then he summons a fiend.

As the ominous portal to the lower planes opens, Viconia quickly turns into a wolf and runs like, or in this case from, hell. In the end, we have to resort to somewhat cheesy tactics to win. Yoshimo sets up a few traps at the bottom of the stairs and we lure Rayic down, but the traps do nothing to his defenses. So we run back down and then up again while Rayic chases us, until finally we manage to get him to waste most of his spells on the skellies. He does stun Jaheira and almost kills Yoshimo with a Flame Arrow, but then his defenses fail and a skeleton kills him.

We really need to buy the Master Thievery Potions at Mae'Var's and pump up Yoshi's pickpocketing enough to go on a stealing spree. Then we can sell/recharge/steal the wands from Irenicus' dungeon: a Cloudkill castable by a Jelly would certainly help against these annoying spellcasters.

I successfully completed this challenge on core rules a couple days ago w/ a Sorcerer.

Core rules all the way (including the random hp and spell memorization failure)
Dungeon-Be-Gone
Minimal mods for convenience only (no game balance changes at all) : Unlimited ammo/potion stacking and bottomless bags of holding
I had throne of baal installed, but I stayed under 2.95m xp and didn't use watcher's keep or anything. I don't like TOB, so this was SOA only.

I took an Elf Sorcerer : Sorcerer because I can keep them protected and out of danger, Elf for +1 Dex and charm resistance. Also, sorcerer is the most fun to play because you have to choose your spells and this gives you something to look forward to at level ups.

I kept imoen and jaheira through the dungeon-be-gone so that I wouldn't get unearned xp from imoen untrapping/unlocking. I used Jaheira for the whole game--iron skins+summon fire elemental is an awesome combo. I didn't use insect plague for some reason.

Early on I did the skinner quest and a few other xp gainers with just pc and jaheira to increase pc's level for purposes of npc recruitment. Aerie joins at 7/7 or 7/8 I think if you do the circus tent right away, but if pc is levelled enough you get her at 8/9 with only 40,000 xp to go till 9/10. Some npcs level up a lot in response to pc(Anomen, Jan, Aerie), but most don't really level up much at all unless you gain a ton of xp first. This trick is more exploitable in bg1 for no reload runs on core rules.

My final party was Jaheira, Aerie, Imoen(Jan pre-spellhold), Mazzy, Valgyar. I originally had Keldorn, but I accidentally petrified Fiirkrag(thus losing carsomyr) and was too irritated to use him any more after that, so I replaced him with Valgyar, who luckily I had left alone so was L12 when I got him and not L9 if I had generated him too early.

Aside form losing Carsomyr, my other big screwup was making the entire drow city hostile by choosing the wrong response at the entrance. I had to do Ust Natha the hard way and kill every damn drow and hear the phrase "in the name of Lloth, WE FIGHT" 5 million times on my way to the eggs.

My PC was never really close to death as far as I remember. I just kept him way out of danger, often near the entrance to an area later in the game although this felt a bit cheesy. Speaking of cheese, I went out of my way to avoid cheese -- no using foreknowledge to set skull traps, no laying down webs and cloudkills into fog of war, no simulacrum/project image abuse, no feeblemind, no fake talk, no pick pockets, etc etc. I wanted a very pure win. Just good old fashioned tactics whenever possible. I did use robe of vecna and shield of balduran even though these items are broken imo. Robe of vecna is just too cool and beholders are too annoying (plus Id have just ended up killing them with skeletal warriors anyway).

Jaheira died twice -- once to the unseeing eye and once to the duergar balor. I just started playing bg2 again after not playing for ~8 years, so I didn't remember how a lot of the areas went. I sent Jaheira ahead to complete the rod against the unseeing eye, but when jaheira picked up the parts, the thing was placed in my PCs pack instead of Jaheira's even though he was way back at the entrance! Jaheira ran around a corner, but the unseeing eye can apparently cast horrid wilting through walls and killed Jaheira pretty quickly. I sent Jan in to take his protections down with the rod. Jan was killed too. Finally sent in some summons to soak up spells and then killed him with Keldorn/Aerie. After this I was really nervous about unforeseen occurences because my metagame knowledge was so weak and I tried to avoid fights where I didn't have remember the tactics I needed (so I skipped kangaxx, twisted rune, mind flayer area in underdark and sewers).

The deurgar's balor with the stupid hold/stun effect would have killed my entire party except for the skeletal warriors I had summoned beforehand. Summons were critical to my strategy because I could send them in to eat the first enemy spell onslaughts and keep my party relatively protected since I didn't remember the details of every encounter and what protections I needed.

Besides Jan and Jaheira, Aerie died once in the first Irenicus fight to a power word kill. I ran away and regrouped at this point and to my amusement when I came back a skeletal warrior was still alive and pounding on him. I sent Mazzy in with improved haste and arrows of dispelling (I kinda regret using these because they're broken) and she basically soloed him to dead with tuigan bow. As an aside, Mazzy is really underrated... she doesn't require much micromanagement to be effective, which is nice in a no reload run where you need to focus on your main character more closely.

Final battle was easier than the first for some reason and we just completely manhandled Jonny and then it was on to the ending sequences.

More random stuff in Athkatla.

We meet up with Xzar, kill his apprentices for the Harpers, and then recue "Montaron" before reporting to Edwin on Rayic's demise. He tasks us with getting some documents off a merchant, but having a bad feeling about that, we take a trip to the Promenade first. Yoshi drinks up five Potions of Master Thievery and robs the spell merchant blind - but not before selling him all of our wands. Also, he pickpockets Ribald for his Ring of Regeneration. Now we're ready to continue with the Shadow Thief tasks.

Jaheira gets cursed by Baron Ployer while we're doing our business with the merchant, forcing us to take a break from thievery and deal with him in the slums. We manage to kill the former baron before his wizards can do much and run outside, after which Viconia casts Polymorph Self and returns inside as a Jelly. Being immune to magic, she feels entirely comfortable filling the room with Cloudkills. Only one of the wizards escapes death by running outside, and he even manages to Breach Oberon. However, Viccy returns from inside the house, turns into a giant spider and mauls him to death.

We return to the docks to run the remaining errands, and are attacked by some would-be Shadow Thief defectors. One of them drops a Find Familiar scroll, which is convenient: soon, Oberon has another Fairy Dragon. I think his name will be Rabbit.

Now we're about ready to take down the treacherous Mae'Var. We sneak invisibly into the basement, where we summon a "few" reinforcements.

"There's no kill like overkill"

We then charge Mae'Var. As soon as he goes hostile, Oberon casts Slow, Viconia casts Chaos and Edwin casts Emotion. The battle pretty much ends there, as all but one assassin are incapacitated in one way or another.

"Tell me why this is a land of confusion "

Renal Bloodscalp rewards us handsomely. That means it's SHOPPING TIME!

Frustrated and angered by the loss of Rabbit (and ten hit points), Oberon heads to the Den of the Seven Vales to get sriously drunk.  Not wanting to drink alone, we invite everyone for a night of unbridled revelry.

Posted Image
"This party needs some GIRLS. And OGRES. Also DEAD PEOPLE. Dead people don't hog the ale."

Of course, our good time is ruined by some rude and mouthy adventurers. Their leader, a dwarf called Mencar Pebblecrusher, is being particularly vile, so we very politely suggest that he go **** himself. He takes it badly. Dwarves, no sense of humor.

BAR FIGHT TIME.

The summons charge the room under Haste, their purpose largely being to cause confusion among the ranks of our enemy. Their mage dispels the Haste almost immediately, but Edwin's Chaos confuses their thief - always a good thing, given their irritating tendency to go invisible a zillion times per fight. Now he won't, and I'll get to loot his potions afterwards. Somewhat surprisingly, Jaheira's Nymph also manages to hold Mencar Pebblecrusher himself.

Posted Image
"Not quite so tough now, are you?"

A Glitterdust spell reveals Brennan, and now the battle is essentially won. Amon of the Purple Brotherhood does manage to confuse one of our Ogres, but it does him little good.

Posted Image
"LET'S SEE HOW YOU LIKE IT WHEN YOUR FAMILIAR DIES"

After selling our loot, we buy a Girdle of Hill Giant Strength for Jaheira and Bracers of Defense AC 3 for Oberon. I think now is a good time to make good on our promise to Nalia, whose keep we promised to save a few days prior. We head for the City Gates.

On the way, we're again ambushed by slavers, who put up a good fight. Much better than Mencar, actually - these random spawns are fairly challenging, even though my SCS installation only improves them slightly. Once we finally make it to the gates, Oberon has used up almost all of his spells.

Which makes it a perfect time for a Shadow Thief fleeing from some vampires to beg for our help. Not being completely heartless, we give it, of course, but it's not going to be easy. In the end, our remaining skeletons manage to keep the vampires busy long enough for Edwin and Oberon to fry them with Wands of Lightning.

He beat Sarevok. He killed Aec'Letec. How ironic that in the end, it was the humble slaver ambush that proved too much for him. :(

Sorry to hear it, I liked reading Oberon's story.

The bandit ambushes with SCS are some of the hardest fights of chapter 2, imo. I only fight the first and second groups (to get the sword and save Renfield), then use invisibility 10-radius when travelling between areas; the bandits almost never have worthwhile items, give little experience, and are not worth the risk.

I have a huge problem with my current game, bwp is pretty damn buggy, i noticed it abit during the portion of bg1 where some mod characters just didnt spawn or didnt exist at all and i had to hunt down their cre file and put in the override then spawn them, only had to do this twice during bg1, now in bg2 it seems to be random as ****, like ill get given the quest for a mod and then the person im meant to meat doesnt exist, or parts of a mod are installed and other parts are not, its really starting to annoy the hell out of me, the biggest one came last night where im doing the dungeon crawl mod quest, the characters were not there in the coronet so i did the usual trick of putting the cre files in override and spawning them, and as usual none had names but their dialouge and quest seem to take and i get through to the island dungeon, now im doing this (very ****ing hard at level 10 btw, iron golem and two stone golems almost ended the run right there) and i follow the dungeon along going into a room, now the room as no exit as you enter, you can see the door but there is no clickable exit, its a small room with just one container with a limited wish and 3 high priced gems.. i figured a scripted event would happen but nothing does.. im just stuck here, it made an autosave before going into the room and using that puts me back in the dungeon and there is no other way out, most annoying thing i can't seem to find anyone who as actually played the damn thing so i dont know what is suppose to happen.. but that coupled with the ton of really annoying bugs is making me want to just reinstall bg2 on its own with the mods installed manually.

i think the main problem was how bwp installs things automatically or its the generalize biffing, not sure, in terms of the no reload challenge am i allow to do this? i cant see my bgt save games working correctly with a fresh bg2 install, the dialogue strings would be all messed up so it means starting again from jons dungeon with the character i had at the end of bg1.. goes against what i had in mind for this trilogy noreload run but i really dont think i want to carry on coming across more and more bugs and missing content.

Indeed, and had I not so foolishly gotten my familiar killed, I would have been traveling invisibly. Such a minor misjudgement, such major consequences.

Oh well. I'll be starting over with a different character at Candlekeep.

update, after spending pretty much all day installing bg2 and the same mods plus some (separate install to my bgt game) and after thinking i had everything perfect the game decideds to become unplayable slow for me, i have no idea why nor do i longer care, i wiped the damn thing from my hdd.

so now im going back to my mod buggy install bgt, which means im having to use a movetoarea console command just to get out of the dungeon crawl areas, so i teleported back to the docks leaving that quest unfinished forever, bugs be damn ill not let them stop me.

should be interesting to see which kills my run first, unfixable bugs or scs2 death.

And Congrats to Jeff W!

Thanks. I'm thinking of starting another run with Sword Coast Strategems II and a couple NPC mods if I can find some that don't annoy me too much.

Ran into a bit of a snag computer-wise and had to reformat the computer(again). This time I forgot to backup my files so...I'm going to have to re-roll everything. That's all.

Hmm I think I may start again. Haven't played BG in a while because I've been playing to much of another game and school is really busy right now.

I'm putting this run on hiatus since I now have da2, I'll pick it back up once again after I'm done with da2.

I did all the misc and some mod quests I could find in athkatla, also did the bard stronghold quest and the thief guild quest (bard one came very close to ending it all but I managed to use portals to regroup) party is around lv11ish with minsc, jaheira viconia yoshimo and edwin, using the Edwin slot for noc quests and such, prior was anomen, just got to nalias keep and had her replace Edwin for the duration of this quest, I'm well kitted out so hopefully the ace trolls won't be too much of a problem.. Just waiting outside in te camp now until I'm done with da2

SCS II is really hard. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but it's extremely hard to kill anything at the beginning of the game... every enemy seems to have a million potions to turn invis or heal to full health. Fighter npcs seem to be outclassed by simple slavers in 1v1 combat and each mugger requires about 2 full minutes to kill when I'm soloing my sorcerer at the beginning. Aerial servants are the only thing working for me right now.
