Noywad III the level 36 solo dwarven fighter - update 6

Noywad III was wondering what to do when the mages showed up when he got the flesh armor - he hasn't a clue about their scripts and Noywad doesn't want to waste a pro magic scroll on them - so he just left Immesvale immediately - he no reason to return so should be OK.

Time to deal with Bodhi! All allies were recruited, Noywad III doesn't need experience after all, though for sure Noywad III could have done it himself. Noywad III sent Ras to the left then bee-lined to Bodhi and did GWW with IMoD and the Foebane - she said she was dead, but took a few moments for her to register it - rest of the enemies didn't last long.

NoywadIIIdefeatsBodhionceandforall_zps16

For Suldanessar, Noywad played carefully here. One of the huge challenges was the mage guarding the Priestess. If he has mazes it could be game over again. So Noywad III sent his summons, what few he has, one at a time. If the enemy would summon a summon himself, Noywad III waited them out, as they would often go hostile and the mage would waste his good spells on his own summon. I'm glad I did that as I saw TWO mazes cast....eventually, though, the drow mage started casted Melf's Arrow - oh really? Time to attack! Even so, Noywad III attacked with is bow  with acid arrows - the drow mage responed with Protection from Magic Weapons - Noywad III responded with getting 90% fire resistance via equipment changes (the drow mage had a fireshield up), equipped "excellent" axes and charged and GWW - yes the mage died quick. I've done this trick a few times this run...

Time for Nizi! I didn't think range attack would work, as Nizi would just advance. So buffed what I could and charged into melee. Nizi did remove magic and fear - oops forgot to put up a clarity potion! Noywad III got wing buffeted, gulped the potion, and charged once again. Noywad would alternate with GWW and RoR heals and extra potion heals, it took a while and at one point Noywad III was near death (as was NIzi), fortunately Noywad III's aura was clear and used a RoR heal - a singe follow up hit ended the fight. This was one of the closest calls it's been the entire run.

NoywadIIIdefeatsNizi_zpsdae6de6a.png

I ended session here - Wesorc wanted to adventure with Neequan.

Do you not have the staff of fire / staff of earth?  They can be sold and repurchased to give you effectively unlimited summons if you want to use them.

I wish I did. I passed on the Planar Sphere because there's a mage who does maze at least once (and maybe even more than once) and I didn't have a defense to that yet, without a pro magic scroll which I wasn't doing since that was reserved for Irenicus. As for the Staff of Earth, I forgot that summoned monsters - I rarely buy it, so usually gloss over it. I did have the money, but too late now for that too.

Hi everyone. Today Serene the Beastmaster entered the BG2 No-Reload Challenge. I've been trying to post here, with pics, but apparently the image extension (.bmp) is not allowed on the forum. If you don't mind you could read my installment, under the heading "In Amn" here. Next time I'll make sure to post images with the .jpg or .png extension. Anyway, I'm afraid I'll have to consider the run as ended (even though, as you can read, due to a glitch I'll never know).

Btw, thanks Corey for your advice re: Dragons. Really appreciate it. I'm indeed playing SCS, so it might be a bit different. But I'll keep your tips in mind anyway...

Sorry to hear about Serene. Technically speaking, if you didn't actually die and you did in fact encounter a game-ending bug, you can reload, but I understand why you believe it was effectively over for Serene. I'm done similar things, as have others on the forum.

Oh no, poor Serene!

My Beast Master Eileth just ran from that ambush. I quickly understood that it would be impossible to win when Jaheira failed to get her Iron Skins up. Fortunately, we were not surrounded and could all reach the map edge together.

Hard luck Blackraven.  It makes a huge difference in those early BG2 ambushes if you arrive all invisible (one advantage of having Jan in the party is he knows invis 10').  Also remember that there's only one chance for an ambush between each area (though you may pass through more than one area when travelling).  That means it's always possible to travel to an area safely after you've encountered an ambush (in order to rest before risking another one) - all you have to do is remember where you were travelling originally (something I admit I find difficult ).

Grit - elven wild mage (update 7)

Grit has returned to Athkatla from the Underdark and is considering her next move.

The session started with her removing the royal family from the City of Caverns, although the Prince's priestess did manage to run away in the final fight.  The important encounter there though was getting the Cloak of Mirroring to protect against spell damage.

In the Underdark a project image produced some summons and a couple of incendiary clouds for the drow.  Topped up with a new planetar and mordy swords they went to kill a balor for the svirfneblin (level 20 - extra L7 spell) and collect a spellbook for a mage newly released from prison.  After protecting Vithal from various elementals Grit demanded more of a reward and attacked.  The mage successfully resisted dispel magic from both Grit and the planetar, which allowed him to get into his full spell repertoire - Grit having moved away before that.  However, he failed to imprison the planetar during a time stop and paid the price.

Summons cleared the giant soul gem and did the same to some demon knights, although the last one managed to send the planetar running with a symbol: fear.  I didn't bother with the remainder of the kuo-toa.

For the beholders Grit just entered invisibly and used a planetar to kill the elder orb while she collected the Greenstone Amulet.  That got her to level 21 (extra L8 spell), while she also received her final saving throw improvement.

She didn't bother with the illithid at all, but just went to the drow city - summons having no trouble forcing a path through a drow ambush.  After visiting the shops she left again on the way to rescue Phaere.  Summons took care of another ambush and I made a mistake in taking them on to talk to Solaufein.  The result was the planetar unsummoned just as the enemies teleported in.  On their own the 3 skeleton warriors would probably have been insufficient and Phaere could have been in trouble.  Fortunately there was no surge as Grit produced a replacement planetar and Phaere was saved

There were no mistakes with the remaining drow tasks and Grit watched as Phaere erupted into flames before leaving the city.  She let Adalon do all the work of clearing the exit (using apparently unlimited lower resistance, FoD and flame arrows) before leaving invisibly.  The only glitch there was that I tried to go invisible initially using NRD rather than bother going into inventory to get a ring - that was a 25,000 gold mistake.

Meh, I didn't really get much "into" him. I made a new install, including many things mentioned herehere, and here. :D

Needles to say, I'll play a berserker. :P

If he gets to level 5-6, I'll post on his progress.

Multi-Player No-Reload

Neequan - gnomish fighter/thief, controlled by Corey_Russell

Wesorc - elvish sorcerer, controlled by Dogdancing

The duo decided to get some boots for Neequan - we get the boots of avoidance. We also de-trap the nearby trapped doors.

Next, we paid a stop to the first level of Watcher's Keep. We didn't do the statues but we did everything else. This time we put a protection from undead scroll on both of us - last time we had it just on Corey_Russell's character and it was a disaster for Dogdancing's character. Neequan did good thief work and de-trapped the place safely. The Crimson Dart was a great upgrade for Wesorc. The battle with the guardian golems, we stood in the room with the strange statue in the glass container, and Neequan pulled the golems. Neequan then borrowed Wesorc's Crimson Dart (Neequan doesn't have a +3 ranged weapon of his own yet) while Wesorc used MMM to kill these things - this worked. Wesorc accidentally clicked on a door, but fortunately the golem died a moment later. The ammo belt is the real reason we are here, we want this before we attempt D'Arnise Keep.

After selling we headed for D'Arnise Keep. The trolls were mostly killed by Neequan's Sword of Flame, Blade of Roses and/or Wesorc's crimson dart or MMM. Most of the fights went pretty smooth. One upgrade found, the ring of earth control for Neequan, putting his AC while dual-wielding at -6. Glacais was webbed by Kithix, so that went well. The battle with the Yuan-Ti Mage was a bit chaotic. Wesorc stayed behind a door and Neequan was protected by the shield of harmony. Neequan tried to silence the mage with Namurra and it worked! So Wesworc came in to help. But then the Mage cast some spells - oh I see it vocalized somehow - Run Wesorc! And so she did. Fortunately the only thing the Yuan-Ti mage cast was a spell thrust on Wesorc - but Wesorc wasn't running anything a spell thrust would remove, so no harm done. Neequan did eventually kill this thing.

The duo forged the FoA and were trying to resume their quest but then the game did a hard crash. Fortunately the last save is only a bit back. We did in fact save to a permanent save and will deal with the golems next session.

Thanks everyone for your sympathies. I've considered reloading, and removing the gold of five raise deads and all the equipment from my party members, and continuing after that. Maybe I'll do so, without posting on the forums if you think it would still be an unacceptable reload. It would be good to get a bit more experience again with BG2. Most likely I'll roll a new charname though.

Serene had used her Fairy Dragon for Invisibility 10' Radius which was very useful in a previous ambush, but the Fairy Dragon doesn't always memorize its spells in one resting session (maybe they need 24 hours for their spells to be refreshed?).
Anyway, if it hadn't been for poisoned Renfeld the party would have continued to Nalia's Keep, so the second ambush wouldn't have happened.

Just a quick note about Noywad III - belatedly, he forgot an extremely important item (the Reflection Shield), and also the silver pantaloons, so had to leave Suldanessar and returned. He will battle Irenicus at the Tree of Life and in Hell tonight, wish him luck...

Noywad III the Solo Level 38 Dwarven Fighter - Update 7

Noywad III successfully battled and found Irenicus at the Tree of Life. Noywad III still doesn't have any sure-fire maze defense - so he used his last protection from magic scroll and easily defeated Irenicus.

NoywadIIIdefeatsJonIrenicus_zpseed61512.

While the scroll was still active he defeated the beholders for the 4th Hell Tear. He did the good route for the 5th, evil for the 4th (kinda wish I had done the good route, apparently I missed out the immunity to +1 weapons or less by doing this), good for the 3rd, good for 2nd and evil for the 1st Tear.

I noticed that having the pro magic scroll active prevents the bonuses from being applied - being solo, need all I can get. Therefore, rested buffed and tried to trigger the fight with Irenicus - but forgot still 1st Tear left! Doh! So used several GWW to burn down Sarevok quick as I could and returned...

Here is Noywad's stats and resistances before triggering the fight with the demons. Most important buff is probably potion of magic protection, combined with equipment makes Noywad unkillable by magic (I think). At the very least, Mazes won't end my game, which was my intent.

NoywadIIIsstatsbeforetriggeringfinalbatt

The demons were killed super quick and did little damage, took just two GWWs (Greater Whirlwinds). Ok time for Irenicus himself. Since Noywad III was immune to magic attacks, he would wait until his weapons were hurting Irenicus, and when a Protection from Magic Weapons would activate, Noywad III just stood off a bit to wait 4 rounds and then return to attack once more. I also made sure to back off when Irenicus was near death to make sure he had a chance to surrender - and yes worked exactly as planned - Irenicus is DEFEATED!

Noywad III will be solo in ToB as well. Blunder made! I forgot to buy all the arrows of dispelling off the fletcher in Waukeen's Promenade! Anyone know if any in ToB?

IIrc, Irenicus isn't immune to normal weapons.

Arrows of dispelling - there may be a few in WK, Chromatic Demon level, room just before Fire Elementals respawning pit. Am not sure so don't take this for granted.

Congratulations anyway!

Noywad III the solo level 40 dwarven fighter - update 8 - Saradush

The battle with Illysaera was pretty straightforward - since Noywad III's Reflection shield blocked her ranged attacks, he just had to GWW a few times and that was that.

Some GWWs solved the initial battle with Gromnir's soldiers when arriving at Saradush. Incidentally, Noywad III is using the Foebane as primary weapon, since GWW + Foebane pumps his HP a lot which is handy when surrounded by many enemies. If any ranged enemies also using Reflection Shield. After killing the soldiers pestering the waitress at the tavern, this got Noywad III his final level of the game -  upgrades and main story line from here on in.

Since at the experience cap, fighting trash enemies is a waste of time, so he didn't want to venture into the sewers, or bother with Gromnir's barracks. The lady at the temple won't give him a key (Noywad III is evil now thanks to the Hell trials). So he decided on the most direct route - rest until there were courtesans and let them escort him to the jail - this worked. Fortunately once again the Improved Mace of Disruption was too much for the vampires - this weapon destroyed them all.

As for the interior of Gromnir's castle, Foebane and Reflection shield was used against most of them. Noywad III found a powerful mage and two fighters near her, and Noywad III thought there were mazes in her script - so Noywad III ran a short distance - only the fighters came! The mage did their time stop when she couldn't see Noywad III, thus wasted it. Excellent, the fighters were burned down. Then Noywad III attacked the mage at maximum distance using acid arrows. Noywad III was watching carefully to see if she would try to come into touch range - she started approaching! Noywad III ran a short distance and used an invis potion. He then went down the hall and summoned his summons, one at time to see if they could draw out her maze - she never did it, hmm. Once out of summons, Noywad III had no choice to finish this pest and used some ice arrows - it didn't take too many shots and she falls!

Another room cleared of trash enemies - ah here's what I need to forge the Foebane +5! Noywad III went to the Pocket Plane to forge it immediately - he returned and cleared out two more rooms of trash enemies. Now for the party underneath Gromnir's level. Noywad III approached with Hardiness and Improved Invisibility but the enemies could still attack! Noywad ran to a corner - ah good the mage didn't follow - just and an archer (who is harmless thanks to Reflection Shield) and a few melees - some GWWs once again cleared the out nicely. As usual for Noywad III, he then used Ice Arrows on the mage - took a while had to burn through some misleads and such but success!

Noywad entered Gromnir's floor under hardiness - his first action was an invisibility potion - but it was quickly dispelled and  Noywad III couldn't get any separation, he will have to fight all of them at once - ok here goes. Two GWWs of Foebane +5 burns down Gomnir, which also boosts Noywad's HP. A thief keeps trying to backstab but isn't doing much damage, think he is missing. Some more GWWs burn down the thief, two melees and finally the archer. Okay, only the mages left! Noywad III had to burn down some mislead images - while he was doing that the enemies both summoned a djinn - thanks guys! Noywad fired ice arrow after ice arrows into one mage - he dies! He repeats for the 2nd - this kills the 2nd mage as well. A single GWW with Foebane +5 finished the djinns.

I don't see Melissan. I ran out of time so ended the session here - sometimes reloading fixes this and she appears like she is supposed to. Will try that when I resume my session later.

Grit - elven wild mage (update 8)

Grit just had time this morning to follow Noywad III on the trail to ToB.

I decided the only real equipment she was missing in Athkatla was the staff of the magi.  At the Twisted Rune she watched Shangalar spawn and then retreated and used a scroll of undead protection before killing him with missile fire (level 22 - improved alacrity).  She then sent the planetar to do the important job of killing Vaxall and it also finished off Revanek and Shyressa before disappearing.  A series of other summons then worked their way through Layene's defences before another planetar finished the job.

Back at the vampire hideout a single lot of summons from a project image cleared the top level.  Downstairs, some more summons attacked Bodhi without warning and her support troops failed to get to her before she exploded into chunks (level 23 - energy blades).  It only took a few seconds for the rest to die and Grit staked Bodhi to get the Lanthorn.

She successfully persuaded a doppleganger ambush that she was not Grit and went to report to Elhan.  In Suldanesselar she again relied mainly on summons to fight, though invisibility was used to avoid the majority of enemies anyway.  Nizi was assaulted by a first lot of summons by project image and taken to near death before managing to heal.  Further progress was complicated as Grit was informed she was up against the summoning limit, even when there only appeared to be 4 left alive in the area (possibly I hadn't noticed one being mazed).  She also had no luck with 3 lots of dispel magics - meaning Nizi's stoneskins allowed him to survive a time stop relatively unscathed by energy blades. Later on, Grit had an unfortunate entangle surge and had to hurriedly produce more summons as distraction before Nizi would turn on her - a mordy sword working well there.  A simmy and Grit herself then both tried NRD lower resistances.  The simmy's landed, while Grit's surged, but with a burst effect that did 85 HPs to Nizi itself!  Now almost dead, it only took a single skull trap to finish the dragon off (level 24 - dragon's breath).  That was the first fight for a long time when I felt there was a potential problem - I really need to take dragons more seriously!

At the temple Grit attempted to let the Avatar do all the hard work.  However, it didn't bother killing the golem there, which nearly resulted in death when the cutscene ended (the iron golem successfully attacking her despite her just having re-established staff invisibility - possibly the cutscene counted as her taking an action).

Moving on to the Tree of Life a project image produced some summons before dispelling itself to allow Grit to attack the parasites.  She left Jon for the summons to handle - the planetar landing a juicy finishing blow on him there.

The hell trials produced +20% elemental resistance, immunity to +1 weapons (used a resist fear scroll), -2 AC, -2 saving throws and +2 strength.  With immunity to Sarevok's weapon, Grit started just beating him up in melee, but lost patience and summoned a planetar - which showed how it should be done.

For the final fight the slayer used a death spell to clear away most of the initial summons, but the planetar was ready-buffed and defeated all the demons by itself.  It disappeared before it could get through the slayer's defences, but a replacement was produced and, despite Jon's protestations, he had to go on a one-way trip.

@Grond0 - Congrats on making it to ToB! Interesting fight against Nizi - Noywad III had exciting fight vs. Nizi as well. Nice to see a surge work for your advantage for once. Best of luck for the end stretch - would be nice if both Grit and Noywad III took down Melissan.
