Guttax the half-elf cleric/ranger - Chapter 6

So Guttax does in fact try to get the flesh armor for Viconia. We defeated the mages when we got the armor, but Imoen died and so did my love, Viconia. Viconia dying was rather unlucky as she had 75% magic resist at the time. Imoen dying was rather silly. She had SI (spell immunity) in her spellbook. If I had did SI:N I she would not have died. Nalia had SI actually memorized so she used it and thus didn't die to the mass of horrid wiltings. Guttax two Gaxx rings at that moment (magic resistance) and also his belt of inertial barrier kept him in one piece.

GuttaxgetsflesharmorbutViconiaandImoenar

Guttax reluctantly parts with his spare Gaxx ring so that Viconia can get 105% magic resistance.

Next, we gather Valygar to work on his quest. We had to temporarily kick Minsc out. The planar went really smooth, most mages were handled by mages out of sight, with Valygar scouting for all fights except Tolgerias. The only fight of difficulty was in fact Tolgerias. We played this extremely cautious. I had Guttax open the door to Tolgerias' room in the shadows...then he backed off and we sent in various summons, starting with two Mordy swords. Now and then summons (but not the mages) would find the party - we would kill the summons, but staying careful to remain out of the enemy mages' sight. We threw a great many summons into the fire...a huge number of game ending spells were witnessed (distintegrate, FoD, etc.). Eventually though, the enemy's summons were killed. This was Viconia's cue to attack with her sling. Eventually Tolgerias emptied his spellbook on Viconia uselessly and entered melee with his staff. Korgan then came up to speed up the kill.

Viconia also soloed Lavok. When Lavok entered melee, she did DUHM and also improved haste (via the Kua Toa haste bracers) - good thing as he actually got some hits on her despite her -7 AC.

The rest of the sphere was handled without incident.

The team also battled in Firkraag's lair. We had done everything up to Tazok, but not Conster or Firkraag yet. Nothing out of the ordinary happened for this section. We used a pro undead scroll for that large mass of undead, with the party safe behind closed doors while the hunt was going on. Samia's group was overwhelmed by our summons and buffs. We gave Guttax 127% fire resistance and then the genies were easy to defeat in the area.

The final objective of the session was the de'Arnise Hold.  That was all straight-forward,

In the hallway leading to the courtyard, Iskvael pumped Yuledan with magic missiles! I'm not sure I would call that straight-forward...

Guttax Update - Chapter 6 stuff continues...

I normally wouldn't post for such a small detail, but it does greatly affect my game and plans. Some people may find it amusing as well...

Well, we were just about to have our conversation with Firkraag - we were at the entrance to his lair and paused - I had just got back from getting a drink from the kitchen. Being quite ready to get things going, I almost simultaneously unpaused and clicked to move. However, we did NOT move - why you ask? Because that very moment Viconia brought up her "Big" conversation about her concerns for the relationship - I didn't even see what the question or options were, the click registered on some option that made her leaver...FOREVER! I had some serious plans for her 100% magic resistance, drats....

MisclickmakesGuttaxloseViconiaforever_zp

She was nice enough to leave her Gaxx ring and ammo belt with Guttax before storming off...This means we lost all her skeleton warrior and ariel servant summons too...Guttax can do that too, but that means less druid spells if doing that. Choices, choices...the rest of the group will have to pick up the slack.

I will probably leave her spot open for SoA and fill it with Sarevok...with 3 melees in front, I can finally put Guttax in the back to be a bit safer, and you know, actually have him cast spells!

Guttax the half-elf cleric/ranger - Firkraag update

Perhaps as compensation for losing Viconia, the battle with Firkraag went very smooth. Firkraag only got a single hit on Guttax before he went down. Most important buffs were probably the arcane version of protection from fire on everyone. We had two mordy swords making trouble too. We did try a few spells, like spell thrust/breach/blindness x2, but really Firkraag fell in 3-4 rounds so the magic I don't think was too important. Minsc was using the Dragon Halberd, I doubt Firkraag like that either.

FirkraagthoroughlydefeatedbyGuttax_zpsc3

Nalia leveled as did Guttax. I got an HLA again even though I don't have 3 million total experience yet. As I mentioned before, I won't use any of these HLAs until I actually do reach 3 million total experience.

Guttax the half-elf cleric/ranger - final chapters

Traveling with: Korgan, Minsc, Nalia, Imoen

The team has successfully defeated Bodhi and her minions. Things were fairly straightforward, although the mass of vampires was pretty scary...

We also defeated all enemies in Suldanessar except Irenicus. No problems here either, except Minsc got killed fighting the guardians to the entrance to the Temple of Rillifane. Belatedly, I realized I had forgot to do some things so we had to leave the city - I forgot to forge the Red Dragon Scale for one.

So we leave the city and forge that item. We also crash the Twisted Rune HIdeout. We did good here, except Shangalar kills Imoen (not chunked though). Since Imoen died, we gave her the Staff of the Magi as compensation.

Imoen still needs lots of experience, so will crash the Hidden hideout next session.

We defeated Nizi pretty much by range attacks, we had mordy swords and a planetar as distractions. Somewhat suprisingly, Guttax somehow managed to make plague of insects land on Nizi - and it was hurting Nizi too! Success!

Thank you. I'm not playing SCS, so it's a little easier to make progress than some of the other runs. However, if I am successful, will move the difficulty slider bars a notch (hard) for both BG 1 and BG 2. Even with the Helmet of Defense, 2 Gaxx rings (you can pick-pocket the 2nd one in vanilla), and +2 cloak of protection, this still only puts Guttax's save vs. spells at 3. This means if anyone debuffs he could still die to a save or else type spell. He can't lock down his buffs either with no SI.

Therefore, he's still quite mortal. His team works well though and that makes a difference. His druidic spells rarely have been relevant.

Guttax the Half-Elf Cleric/Ranger - FINAL SoA Update

Guttax battled Irenicus at the Tree of Life. He used a protection from magic scroll on himself and some buffs on his allies to try to keep them alive - the buffs worked and Irenicus dies without slaying any of Guttax's friends.

Guttax of course had to do all the good routes in Hell so as not to become a fallen ranger. The protection from magic scroll was still active so Guttax and Korgan took out the beholders in Hell Tear #4 challenge.

Lots of buffs used of course for the final battle. Some GWWs and Horrid Wiltings were thrown around, ton of healing necessary on the frontliners - Minsc would have died except Guttax used our only RoR to keep Minsc alive (Viconia stole our other one when she stormed off). Basic and direct attacks were too much for Irenicus and Irenicus falls!

GuttaxdefeatsIrenicusinHell_zps0d5e66a5.

We also battled Illsaera - our mages both used chaos and that was too much for the enemies. Sarevok has joined the party and we will attempt Pocket Plane Challenge #1 next.

Agreed. Now if I can just do the same to Melissan. With her unlimited healing, summons she has a few more tricks than Irenicus. I'll give it a shot though of course....

SCS or not, there are so many ways to die in BG.....

As for saves, try considering Shield of Archons for defense, it's a decent anti-spell buff.

Oh, and gratz on Irenicus!

Multi-Player No-Reload

Neequan - level 11 fighter/level 13 thief, controlled by Corey_Russell

Wesorc - level 14 sorcerer, controlled by Dogdancing

The duo got a chance to make some progress today. Our first task was to work on the sub-quests to gain Maevar's quests. They went pretty unremarkable. The question mark, as always, was dealing with Rayic Gethras. Our strategy was to approach with improved invisibility then spam summons right next to him - hopefully he will be annoyed by our summons and target them - this is in fact what happened. The party then attacked with ranged power.  Wesorc's MMM's in particular were devastating to Rayic and he didn't live long. Wesorc showed an amazing amount of restraint and did NOT loot the table, though she wanted to. Good thing, that's an acid trap that probably would have killed her.

Next challenge was Maevar and his goons. We decided we had no interest with the invisible guys on the ground floor, so we went invisible ourselves and prepared for Maevar himself. Neequan has already laid 6 snares in his coming and goings, so that wasn't good for Maevar, we sent some weak summons and a fire elemental and relaxed out of sight - Wesorc leveled to 14 here. Dogdancing thought it was quite cruel that the Fire Elemental was immune to anything below +2 weapons, yet Maevar's gang didn't have that, thus had no chance. Once we looted, we went invisible once more and reported to Bloodscalp our success.

We are now flush with gold (44,000), so perhaps it's time to get some big ticket items. Neequan used his 20 CHA (via items) to buy Shield of Balduran, Robe of Vecna, and sword of balduran.

Next we reported to D'Arnise Hold, someone was stealing with the Keep and had to be dealt with. Neequan paid for the thief's wife's medicines, but expelled the thief from the guard.

Wesorc got Mordy Sword for her level 7 spell - this should come quite handy in Temple Sewers. So we head there. First up, Wesorc summoned 4 fire elementals then did resist fear on the party and summons. Then Neequan crept up to help Wesorc try to target webs out of sight. Wesorc then did cloudkill and greater malison. The duo ranged attacked for a moment, then Gaius the mage was seen! Retreat to our waiting summons...The fire elementals were in fact great distractions, and managed to kill Gaius. The duo ranged attacked until all the enemies fell - success! We used the fire elementals on all the trash enemies in the sewers as well while we had them. The cloak of the sewers was a minor upgrade for Neequan, but it does mean he can stay in leather most of time now, since even with leather his AC is 3. We sold the junk at Roger and now we can pay off Galen whenever we are ready.

Since we were already in the sewers, we rested and charged into Mekrath's Lair. The mephits were no problem. Then Neequan scouted ahead and Wesorc sent summon after summon after Mekrath - Dogdancing was impressed at the vast array of spells Mekrath displayed. She thought it could end bad for an unprepared party. Indeed. Eventually though, Wesorc's summons did get the job done and Mekrath falls. Now both party members have RoR wand, if needed.

Neequan scouts to the right and there is a large group of Umber Hulks. Wesorc does the best summons she has left, then fires a single cloudkill into the room and backs off - it kills all the enemies except a single Umber Hulk which managed to confuse a fire elemental before it was killed. Wesorc used her rarely used dispel magic spell to get rid of the confusion, which worked the 2nd attempt. Corey_Russell was getting sloppy though and nearly tripped the lightning bolt trapped chest (he unlocked it). He remembered to detect traps in time. The planar gem was obtained the the duo ended their session here for now.

Sounds like it would be worth investing in the AC 3 bracers.

Heh...well Wesorc is already using those...also that was a typo - his leather is AC 3 (night's gift +5), but his TOTAL AC is actually -7 - a bit better than you were lead to believe...sorry about that. Nice catch of my typo...

EDIT: I also can wear the shadow armor whenever appropriate which would boost my AC to -9. Wesorc can put spirit armor on me as well, if I didn't want to search for the shadow armor...

Alac - dwarven fighter/thief (1st and final update)

Alac's been continuing his test run to develop a script with the aim of completing a no-reload trilogy in a day.

He's currently in Spellhold and hadn't really had any problems up to that point.  However, he has just died at the hands of the lich there.  I rarely make use of spell trap from the SotM, but relied on it for protection in this case (in order to speed things up by attacking in melee).  That proved foolish as Alac was stunned by a symbol and failed to recover before a summoned efreeti beat him up.

I'll continue the run outside no-reload to develop the script.  Thus far I haven't been keeping track of time, so I might do another run with Alac after that in blocks of a few hours each to check how long it would actually take him to make progress.

Grond0, I recommend a protection from undead scroll for that encounter. Just rest before you get Dace's hand (though you can use the scroll for Dace too).

For the script I would suggest a comment/note section. e.g. Spellhold Lich: Symbol Stun, or Protection from Undead. That way you won't have to focus so much on remembering what to do or face which is significantly harder to do in a timed situation. Likewise, a shopping list of items before events such as Spellhold.

Indeed - I've concluded I need to be even more ruthless about only picking up equipment I really need and will specifically list what should be picked up or purchased.  I'll aim to run through the game again at some point to do that and will also put in a separate section for level ups (weapon proficiencies, thieving abilities, HLAs) rather than leaving those in the main notes.  I'll also aim to estimate the time each encounter should take (which I haven't been keeping track of this time) to check how realistic finishing the game in a 24 hour period is.

I did a BG:EE Blackguard no-reload in 2h45 on Tuesday night s normal speed without notes, could have been a fair bit quicker with them. I hit the level cap somewhere around Rahvin-Angelo (138k at start of Thieves Maze) and had just under 20k gold by the end. ToB pathing should be fairly straightforward as the only real decision is whether to do Sendai before or after Abazigal and a solo character will start with enough XP to burn through the early part.

I'd say SoA is the trickiest bit. Is it worth doing sidelines for equipment (e.g. a lot of effort to get some items but those items can then save significant time or risk). Then again, even largish plots like De'Arnise or Planars can be whizzed through if you have sufficient levels and gear.

Agreed.  I should be able to do BG1 in about 2 hours even allowing for taking the time to build up levels a bit in preparation for BG2.  I expect SoA to take a good deal longer, but I'm minded to think I should be doing enough of SoA to get a reasonable number of HLAs - which should make ToB quick and easy. However, I might be being over-cautious taking that approach ...

Guttax the Cleric/Ranger - ToB progress

Traveling with: Korgan, Sarevok, Minsc, Nalia, Imoen

Guttax and team have infiltrated Gromnir's Castle, defeating all enemies in our path, including Gromnir himself. Nalia and Imoen both opened with chaos (aimed at Gromnir) - this made the fight pretty smooth.

For once, I used the arcane protection from fire spell for all party members - this made Yaga's Temple fighting much safer. Korgan was doing incredible damage with the dwarven thrower in  melee mode (thanks Grond0, Gate70). No serious problems here.

GuttaxwinninginitialfightinYagastemplebu

We had lots of summons and did horrid wiltings to assist against Nylee and her friends. The only hiccup was Minsc got charmed - this could have been bad (summons attacking him), but Nalia did a dispel magic which worked and thus the problem was resolved.

We did buffs and summons then proceeded to search for Yaga-Shura. Eventually Yaga-Shura returned after being wounded by Nalia's magic missiles. We opened our attack with a call lightning by Guttax, horrid wilting by Nalia, and a spell sequencer by Imoen of 3 sets of magic missiles (e.g. 15 orbs) - Yaga was killed super quick, not surprisingly.

GuttaxdefeatsYaga-Shura_zpsf1c26370.jpg

With summons assisting us, the fight at the Oasis was smooth. We will likely press into Abizgal's Lair next.
