Sorry to see the end of that run. Planning another duo?

Good question. My "partner in crime", as it were, hasn't said anything yet. While she learned a ton about spells this run, a caster is not her style at all, so I suspect she is relieved she can choose something more to her liking. We will likely start another duo, soon as there is time...we are hampered by the fact that BG  is WAY too slow on her windows 8 computer (like molasses), so slow in fact it's completely unusable. The reason this is a problem is this means we can only play when Hanna is in bed, so we can use her laptop. But in the summer, Hanna is staying up pretty late, so that ends up being almost never...

If anyone knows how to make BG work in Windows 8 let me know, otherwise, we'll get to it when we have time.

@Corey: I have a laptop with Windows 8 and have no issues whatsoever with running BG or BG2 on it. I didn't installed them on it but just copy/paste the whole game folders from my Windows 7 *big* PC, tweaked the baldur.ini in [Alias] section (or not if copy them on the same drive letter/folder, i.e. d:\games\...) and just run them via bgmain.exe

edit: One more thought... From the readme for a *tweak* for running the game Gothic2 in window mode I discovered that *quote //In  Windows 8 (8.1 preview) all games, which use DirectDraw (DirectX 5,6,7) have low FPS (no higher than ~30). This is the problem of the system itself and not of drivers etc. Possible solution - run those games in *window mode* (if that is possible at all). // end quote*.

So you could try that to see if it will help - I myself always run all games in window mode so that might be a reason I had not those *slowdown* problems you have mentioned.

@Serg: I play vanilla BG 1 with Dogdancing. "windowed mode" is far too small (640 x 480). And you probably play with the big screen mod, and if so, you wouldn't have these issues. From what I have researched, windows 8 gets the big slow downs for any program that requires a low resolution, but also full screen. I get the same problem with Birth of the Federation, which is also 640 x 480 res. The game itself installed fine and plays fine per se, just the slow down is the issue. Thanks for trying though...

No, I have not any big screen mods, just EasyTuTu and modded SoA/ToB on *ingame* 1024*768 resolution. I agree that window mode for 640*480 is too small so you could try to add just widescreen mod for your vanilla setup. Or maybe try to run them in compatibility mode.

Edit: I dug out my own pure vanilla BG1/ToSC installation and checked it out on Win 8.1 x64 laptop (on build-in video card, not on nvidia' one) starting a new game in fullscreen and running around the Candlekeep - no any slow downs, the game runs pretty smooth...

I play on 1280x1024 on windows 8. No problem. Haven't tried with BG2 though. However nowadays usually Tutu. When I played widescreen I had problems though.

Do you mean that you (*play on 1280x1024 on windows 8. No problem....When I played widescreen I had problems though.*) play on 1280*1024 without widescreen? How??? Or you just run vanilla 640*480 BG1 in fullscreen being stretched on 1280*1024 monitor?

I have the screen resolution as 1280x1024 and play full screen. No mods at all. It's been a while since I played it, but it was Ok.

I've just tried vanilla BG1 & TotSC & official patch at 640x480 on my Windows 8 laptop, works fine although I wouldn't want to play at that resolution and would use the widescreen mod so it could be native at 1366*768 if I were to use it frequently. Multiplayer mode seems to behave itself too. No performance difference between windowed mode and fullscreen that I observed.

The unmodded game shouldn't really be that slow so maybe it is something on the computer such as lack of free memory, disk space, wifi hogging the CPU or a graphics card not designed for gaming.

You could try generalised biffing, it is normally used for modded installs but I have a few files in my override folder so expect it may help in that regard.

Well it's definitely not the techy things you mentioned - Dragon Age: Origins is a much more intense resource hog than BG and it runs great on her windows 8. I think I read somewhere turning off video hardware acceleration might make it work, just have to find the setting in windows 8...It's a new computer with very little installed....

Well I found something that worked - if I use EasyTutu and turn on all special video settings, it works fine - so can use her windows 8 now. Can be helpful to play our next run. First though, I am attending a family reunion this weekend at the Oregon Coast, should be a good time. We might be able to work on a new run Tuesday.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 51 - (update 1)
Amend, dwarf cleric (Grond0) & Tenju, half-elf skald (Gate70)

The latest of our hostages to fortune are up and running in BG2.  Things were generally pretty simple for them in BG1, but they've already struggled a bit more in the early stages of BG2 - indicating we probably need to plan our encounters a bit more!

So far they've:

- made it out of the dungeon, despite Amend making the fight with the duergar rather more difficult after annoying his skeletons with a holy smite.  He also had some control problems, resulting in walking through the fireball trap before Tenju could disarm it with the key.

- restored the circus to normal operation.

- struggled to subdue Cohrvale & Bregg (having to resort to running and shooting to finish them off).

- cleared the Copper Coronet of undesirables and bought a few things from Bernard.

- used a potion of firebreath to put a quick end to the Suna Seni ambush.

- found only mephits guarding Watchers Keep, allowing them to quickly loot that.  The statues were left untouched after they found the guardian golems a problem (not helped by them ignoring Amend's sanctuary).

AmendL9.jpg

TenjuL11.jpg

Stats (cont. from BG1):

Amend, cleric 9, 68 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 166 kills

Tenju, skald 11, 54 HPs, 161 kills, 1 death

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 51 - (update 2)
Amend, dwarf cleric (Grond0) & Tenju, half-elf skald (Gate70)

There was a bit more progress yesterday for this pairing.

The action started at a fairly hectic pace as they saved Renfeld in an ambush, then ran into some ambushing orogs on the way to the Docks.  On arrival another ambush by a crazed scimitar thrower was no trouble and nor was watching Hareishan feed on some thieves.  Amend did get held by the mad cleric, but his morale had already broken by then and he couldn't take advantage.

After that things proceeded more calmly:

- Amend removed some decent armour from Officer Dirth's corpse.  Amend sanctuaried into Prebek and Sanasha's house and silenced them from the shadows before going to loot the Harper HQ.

- at the Bridge District they picked up the berserker horn and had a surprisingly easy encounter with the Rune Assassins (Tenju fully buffing to act as target for them).

- paid Gaelan Bayle and got some baubles from Aran Linvail.

- there were several more ambushes, with Amend making good use of holy smite on some occasions.

- arrived at de'Arnise Hold to find that the ammo container had mysteriously disappeared from Amend's inventory (probably a result of both of his moving things in his inventory at the same time).  It's not crucial though so we'll do without it.  The castle was cleared, largely with the help of skeletons.  They proved sufficiently robust to allow Torgal and his 2 giant trolls to be meleed all together.

Stats (cont. from BG1):

Amend, cleric 11, 72 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 186 kills

Tenju, skald 13, 58 HPs, 198 kills, 1 death

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 51 - (update 3)
Amend, dwarf cleric (Grond0) & Tenju, half-elf skald (Gate70)

This duo are feeling a bit lonely in Amn at the moment, but did take the opportunity yesterday to make some decent progress.

They started off at the Temple sewers where they helped Roger and gave a rakshasa some skeletons to chew on.  They went further underground to get a godly rod, using area spells and skeletons to clear the gauths by the bridge.  Amend also had fun watching shadows explode around him.  Back in the sewers they helped Mekrath retrieve a mirror before looking to retrieve the portal gem.  A yuan-ti mage hit Amend with a number of magic missiles and he called in Tenju to help share the pain and finish him off.  Tenju then wondered whether there was a way round the acid blob trap and found the hard way there wasn't.  As he hadn't yet knocked open the container with the rod of resurrection (and Amend doesn't routinely carry raise dead) a trip was required to one of the local temples.  Once back in one piece the duo laid their plans for Tarnor's gang.  Area spells inflicted some early damage before buffed summons led the attack.  That all progressed very nicely and their equipment was swapped for a selection of Roger's potions.

The next major activity was around Mae'Var's guild.  Rayic lost out to a group of summons produced from the shadows by Tenju before the only slightly dodgy moment in the session when trying to save Sansuki from Del and a couple of ambushing vampires.  Without Azuredge and with only 1 APR it was taking a while to kill them and Amend took a leaf out of Corey's book by using a wand of heavens on Del.  However, the odd hit on Amend had been taking its toll and he ignored the pleas from Tenju to compromise his principles and use a healing potion.  So eventually (with HPs down to 10), he took a potion of speed and ran round shooting to finish the vampires off.

The duo also had to resort to a bit of running and shooting to finish off the Fallen Paladins - only their leader was evil so holy smite proved less effective than in many of our recent encounters.  During that quest there was a potentially dangerous moment when I mis-clicked on a conversation option with Ryan Trawl and told him we were taking the cup whether he liked it or not - fortunately he proved more forgiving than paladins are normally known for.

The final activity of the session was chasing after the Athkatla liches.  A scroll of undead protection and a potion of speed each allowed them to be chopped down.  The potions of speed ran out as the duo were attacking Kangaxx's demi-lich form, but wielding Daystar allowed Tenju to make the kill with no trouble even at 1 APR.

Stats (cont. from BG1):

Amend, cleric 13, 76 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 258 kills

Tenju, skald 15, 62 HPs, 247 kills, 2 deaths

Quad multiplayer attempt 1 - (update 6)
Grond0, Dogdancing, corey_russell, Gate70

After receiving a couple of weeks off for good behaviour the Quad team were back with noses to the grindstone today.  The details are all (well, almost all) in Dogdancing's post above, so I'll just briefly summarise:

- returned some acorns

- did Aran's tasks to get access to vampire HQ (surprisingly the XP for helping Mook was sufficient for all 4 characters to get a level at the same time).  Tanova was drained of spells by summons before Bodhi found that standing on traps is a bad idea and lasted only a few seconds longer.

- completed the Sir Sarles quest and upgraded the MoD.

- Yuledan quaffed intelligence potions to put that up to 25 for the illithid enclave.  They failed to reduce it back down below 17 as Yuledan led the assault.

The final action was at the Guarded Compound, which proved a sterner challenge.  The ground floor was no problem, but the main group upstairs posed a significant challenge.  Iskvael fell victim to chaos immediately and failed to disarm traps, leaving the remainder of the group struggling to deal with the attackers - here Iskvael is out of control, Yuledan fallen victim to the acid blob trap and Wewa just died under backstabs from Ketta.  Ratic used the rod of resurrection a couple of times, but his unprepared companions were unable to make much impact.  To give them more chance Ratic got out of sight while Yuledan bravely sacrificed himself and brought back both Yuledan and Iskvael with time to do a bit of summoning and buffing.  With that preparation the fight turned and the enemies were vanquished - Sion's contingencies shown in the screenshot kicked in after his death and Olaf is about to die.  A 5th use of the rod for that combat (equalling the total previous number of party deaths in the BGT run to date) brought back Wewa to join in the celebrations.  One downside was that the Helm of Balduran disappeared during the looting and re-equipping (probably a victim of MP issues where 2 people try to put things into the same inventory space at once).

Stats (cont. from BG1):

Grond0 - Ratic, barbarian 14, 108 HPs, 690 kills

Dogdancing - Wewa, berserker 14, 113 HPs, 416 kills, 3 deaths

corey_russell - Yuledan, fighter 11 / cleric 11, 103 HPs, 332 kills, 4 deaths
Gate70 - Iskvael, mage 12 / thief 13, 54 HPs, 146 kills, 3 deaths

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 51 - (update 4)
Amend, dwarf cleric (Grond0) & Tenju, half-elf skald (Gate70)

A short session yesterday saw some pretty comfortable progress.

After reporting to Ryan Trawl on the Fallen Paladins the duo set off for Trademeet.  With Amend now having regeneration and a good AC most of the enemies struggled to make any impact - though a pair of giant trolls in the Mound did manage to make him run briefly when both hit in quick succession.  Cernd was given a good feed and left to gnaw Faldorn's bones while we returned to Trademeet.  After helping Tiris and clearing the tomb (and even talking to Neeber) a bit of shopping produced a new hammer, club, cloak and girdle.  There was one potential nasty moment when Tenju took some damage during an ambush before being targeted by a lightning bolt from the mage - fortunately he saved against the full potential damage.

There was just time to journey to Umar and help a mage dismantle his golem.  Amend was pleased to see that his turn undead was able to explode some shadow fiends near the ranger's house, so that should speed up progress through the ruined temple next time.  On the down side Amend mis-clicked on Fael's conversation options, so there will be no flesh armour this run.

Stats (cont. from BG1):

Amend, cleric 14, 78 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 307 kills

Tenju, skald 16, 64 HPs, 269 kills, 2 deaths

Datron the Solo Fighter/Illusonist entering Trilogy No-Reload Challenge (BG 2 Portion)

SETUP:

Vanilla BG 2

Core Rules at all times including level ups/spell scrbes

"gore" on (enemies can be chunked)

TOB and offical ToB patch

No mods

Datron has made it out of the dungeon, so decided to officially enter him into the BG 2 portion of his trilogy no-reload challenge. His tactics, using ranged/melee/spells as needed to deal with enemies/traps worked so well, he got out of the dungeon with a huge stack of heal potions. The only enemy who escaped was the vampire - she shouldn't have got away, she was hit with a scorcher, but I targeted the mage with magic missiles automatically, forgetting the vamp would run - I had resist fear up so the mage really wasn't a threat. Oh well.

One hiccup he had was he tried to cast friends so he could buy some spells he needed but the Cowled Wizards appeared and gave him his warning...woops...gotta to be careful about this.

First priority was containers - bag of holding was SK'd at beginning of BG 2 adventure, and gem bag and spell scroll container were bought. I then talked to Gaelan Bayle, and then summoned my familiar by going into a back room at the Copper Coronet - 103 HP with the familiar, not bad at all for a caster type...

Datron then headed to Watcher's Keep, but of course got hit with the Suna Sune ambush he was unbuffed and tried invisibility and got interrupted. So he tried firebreath potion and scorcher on the mage, hoping his gnome saves would keep him one piece and they did - whew.

Once at Watcher's Keep potion bag and other spells missing bought and selling - low money but expected that. Changed spell sets to better survive ambushes (trying Shadow Door) and ended session here. Here is his initial stats at the beginning of the dungeon:

Datron the Solo Level 9 Fighter/Level 11 Illusionist - Update 2

So Datron is in the city of Athkatla and needs to decide what to do. First priority was weapons - to that end, he went to the graveyard and used knock on a tomb to get a +2 magical axe - this will work for a while until he can get Frostweaver. But before he could do that he got the Renfeld ambush - Datron tried out Shadow Door - worked awesome, he buffed to max and destroyed the slavers easily. Renfeld was returned to his cronies.

But before that, two ambushes at once - the two shadow thieves who saw us overhear their treachery (and thus a fight with them), plus 4 muggers at the same time. Fortunately most of the buffs from the Renfeld ambush were still active, and Datron won the fights pretty easily, even without casting spells. One more quick fight a Cleric of Cyric - while Datron did use the Arbane off-hand it didn't matter as the Cleric's spells were interrupted and he died in 3 hits.

Ok, next weapon, the Stonfire - gotta to free Hendak. While maximum buffs were used, it was a bit over-kill. The first group of guards had no chance. As for the Beastmaster and pets, Datron opened with a scorcher (from spell) and ran away, trying to catch as many as he could in its wake. Then melee it was. The buffs protected him well - the missile protection buff in particular was rather a mean thing to do to the beastmaster. A few more guards easily killed and Hendak is the new proprietor. And Stonefire is now Datron's...

Next order of business was more armor. The ghost armor isn't bad (can't use spirit armor as an illusionist), but can be dispelled. Also, I might find myself out of spells at some point, so having decent armor would be nice, not to mention for the weaker enemies can skip spells altogether. Thus, the absolute best person to pick on to get full plate for a solo character, Officer Dirth was next. I used blind then Azuredge until he fell, here's the kill shot.

Baldr206_zpsf3908034.png

I immediately equipped it. Next, I needed both some easy experience and cash, and an undead scroll would allow easy killing/looting of the graveyard. So headed to Waukeen's Promenade. I immediately got to test this new armor - only buffs active stoneskin and DUHM - here's the fight at the start with Datron surrounded.

Baldr207_zps1a0d7a83.png

As it turned out, the new AC/buffs were so effective, Datron took no damage, even though in melee the entire time. Not a single potion was used. I like it.

The undead scroll was finally obtained and the graveyard district cleared out (though not in the lower tombs). Only loot of note was the Namuraa - could be useful to silence enemies - I especially like using it on the druids in the druid grove. I rested a few times to get knock to open some chests and thus battled some graverobbers (the dialog is kind of funny - you are outraged at them robbing the graves, though by this point I had looted them all myself...) and of course helping Wellyn and Risa.

I find myself casting friends all the time, but always have to be wary of the Cowlies - so decided to get the ring of human influence so I can do that less. (eventually will get license, no money at the moment). So headed to Promenade to battle some shadows and crush Kalah - was simple, nothing really to note here. I did get level 11 illusionist here.

I memorized flame shield and thought - hmm, there a strong group of enemies I can test up the "buffed up" fighter/mage setup? Yes, Mencar and pals! So I eschew my normal "AoE out of sight") tactic and instead the direct route. Absolutely all buffs that make any sense at all were used, putting my AC to -9. The important buffs were improved invisibility and the fire shield. I opened my attack on the mage, who died in two hits. I must have looked like a juggernaut to Mencar and friends.

Baldr208_zps9c0d8509.png

Brennan escaped, not that I was counting on his ring, but otherwise all enemies fall easily. By the way full plate was equipped at start of battle - not a single offensive spell was cast, just two axes all the way. Amazingly, Datron took ZERO damage and used ZERO potions, despite being in full melee range entire fight.

I thought about taking on Tarnor with same setup, but decided against it for the moment. I would have to counter a dispel with a potion of invulnerability (don't have automatic save vs. finger of death yet), which I don't have yet. He's feeling really powerful and flexible. Once he gets SI to lock down his buffs, he's really going to be insane.

Which reminds me, there's one Panaii is holding onto, so will head there next update I think to get it.

EDIT: typos fixed

Datron the solo gnomish level 9 fighter/level 11 illusionist - Update 3

So Datron put his plan into action. He needed a poison scroll to do the spiders in the crypt safely. Hmm no money. Any quick money anywhere? Yes, the Genies at trademeet! So Datron buffs to the max before engaging the genie with the lamp - the genie's morale broke and he ran inside the main tent. Fortunately going in and one more whack means the genie lamp is now Datron's. The genies can do nothing except delay the inevitable - yes victory!

Report to the guildmistress and sell - okay bought the cloak of displacement while here. Next, get poison scroll in Waukeen's Promenade. After that, go to crypts and engage spiders - easy. As for Panai, lots of buffs but important ones were probably fireshield and improved invisibility - she didn't last long. Datron opened with a scorcher (from spell) and ran around a bit then axes finished Panai. The fireshield was helping, though the spiders rarely hit anyways. Success! Even though INT at 20, used a potion of genius to make sure the spell scribe worked - yes it did - SI now castable by Datron. Time to change spells memorized.

Corey_Russell vaguely recalls Alesia_BH mentioning two SIs were actually needed to keep buffs. First though, Corey remembered that Gauis likes True Sight, which would dispel the improved invisibility, possibly Corey's most important buff. So Corey did, like RESEARCH and went to Internet for spell school - ah divination. And abjuration I think stops dispel/remove magics. Okay let's try it!

Headed to sewers, rested and did the buffs. I made a HUGE error here - in my rush to get things started, I forgot to put on my full plate! The missile/slashing defense would have been a huge help. As it turned out, once the improve invisibility wore off naturally, the melees had no trouble at all hitting me with my -7 AC. Drats.

Baldr209_zps43e34a18.png

However, the main goal of shutting down the mages/clerics worked! Once cleric and Gauis just stood there, with me being untargetable/undispellable. The cleric and Gauis were killed before buffs wore off. When II wore off though, lots of hits coming in, even dropping Datron to less than 1/2 health so he had to run a bit to heal. He used his quick summons as distractions while he healed up. He then did a flame arrow and scorcher on Tarnor. He put up Ghost Armor (didn't do this because was supposed to put on full plate before battle) and attacked - all 5 extra healing potions used this fight, and wounded, but victory after all! So the strategy kind of worked.

Baldr210_zps02a0ead4.png

However, forgetting to put on my armor (AND not even casting ghost armor) for such a dangerous fight was a huge error - going to take a break from BG tonight, am too tired/rummy to continue. I am having fun with Datron, don't want to lose him to lack of concentration.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 51 - (5th and final update)
Amend, dwarf cleric (Grond0) & Tenju, half-elf skald (Gate70)

Regrettably today saw the end of the road for this pairing.

They had struggled with poor quality connections, as well as undead opponents, to make their way through the ruined temple at Umar.  Thaxy was left alone, but a combination of a Daystar sunray and a holy smite finished off the Shade Lord.

Windspear Hills had gone reasonably well, with skeleton warriors now offering a bit of extra punch from the summons, while Amend used a level 7 spell for the first time to produce a sunray of his own for the large group of vampires.  After talking to Firkraag the duo came back into the room to face Conster.  Both of them were low on spells at that point and had no summons left.  Amend failed with an attempted silence, before badly wounding Conster with a pair of smites.  Meanwhile though the mage had buffed up and targeted Amend with a finger of death - which failed to penetrate his death ward.  Amend used invisibility and thought that Conster had switched to targeting Tenju, but that proved not to be the case as a lightning bolt sizzled towards him.  The game was paused just after it hit, so there might have been time to use a potion of absorption - if only he had one.  However, the lightning bolt was already bouncing back from the wall just behind him and Amend demonstrated by his death an instant later that there was no time to dodge it.

I loaded up the autosave to double-check that protection from lightning was in his memory :(, though it's a long time since he had last used it.

Amend, dwarf cleric (Grond0) & Tenju, half-elf skald (Gate70)

I loaded up the autosave to double-check that protection from lightning was in his memory :(, though it's a long time since he had last used it.

Just so you know, in our quads, when I anti-mage buff up Wewa for her to solo a mage type, protection from lightning I always cast on them. Too bad you guys didn't follow the same. Nice run though.

Gist - human monk (update 1)

Gist made it through the dungeon without alarms - resting regularly to heal damage and this time using stealth attacks on the golems.  He got a nice critical to achieve level 9 and gained 5 HPs (finishing 3 above average).  He used vampiric touch to get a further HP boost before setting off nasty traps like this one.  Ulvaryl was one of many stunning victims.

Here's his record on exiting the dungeon.  Looking at that I've only just realised that I never got around to looting the pirate treasure in BG1, so Gist didn't make use of the constitution tome .
