I couldn't tell from your description: Are you using PfMW? It's basically an "I win" spell against all melee foes. It's quite possible that it would have been enough in this situation.

Oh, and another thing to consider: Contingency on 25/50% HP: PfMW + Imp Invis + Imp. Haste (for running away if possible).

Good idea, yes, the 4 rounds of PfMW would probably been enough to finish Yaga-Shura, as he was badly wounded. I had a clouded aura though so not sure can get it off in time...

There was no running away, was completely surrounded. But no I don't use PfMW, mainly because I have so few 6th level slots, I also only learned the spell for Datron just recently in ToB.

EDIT: Woops that's right I was using armor, so couldn't cast any spells anyways. I had a helpless contingency but perhaps should have low life contingency instead...

Possibly, but in that situation where you are receiving multiple attacks at once I doubt very much if a contingency would have fired in time - even one on one it doesn't reliably do so.  For a mage a contingency that operates when you first take damage would make much more sense ...

A bit of news about Impish Face & Co.

En route to the city from Windspear Hills we paid a visit to our Keep to sort out some business and have met a punish-eager Reviane but due to our high reputation we were able to talk her out of fight. In the City the very same high reputation and numerous loot for sale allowed us to buy a full stock of 80 arrows of dispelling. Eager to find some decent +3 weapon for Jaheira before entering Planar Sphere we paid yet another visit to the Temple District sewers to check if Tarnor & Co have any. Gaius death-spelled our Aerial Servant and Fire Elemental (though the former managed to hurt him once), Viconia hit with Greater Command (disabling Zorl and Rengaard) and we made a tactical retreat. Gaius spent some time wandering out of sight so we took that opportunity to deal with Draug Fea, Tarnor and Gallchobhair in relative safety. Eventually Gaius made an appearance, Breached Jaheira and launched a Sphere of Chaos. While he was busy with Kittrix and Berserk Warrior we took a route around and punished napping Zorl and Rengaard. Just as we finished with them Gaius appeared and started some kind of necromantic chanting. Mazzy hit him with dispelling arrow and at the moment he launched ADHW on Impish Face Valygar backstabbed and poisoned him. He immediately fired Stoneskin/Fire Shield Red/Blue contingency which was promptly dispelled again by Mazzy and Impish Face splitted his skull with Throwing Axe. We haven't found any decent weapon for Jaheira as intended but at least got Wave Shaft, Ring of Lock Pick, Glasses of Identification, Hangard’s throwing axe +2 and Dragon Scale Shield +2 along with some high-priced armors for sale.

Now we are going to enter a Planar Sphere at last.

to be continued...

Nice to see Impish Face underway again.

Chimera {2} - human monk (update 2)

This morning's session opened in Trademeet where Kitthix webbed Taquee at the 3rd attempt in order to get the efreeti bottle.  The RoAC then protected him from petrification against the genies and, though Faafirah hit him with a meaty blow as he died, the Khan's attempts to run were forestalled by another Kitthix web.

After purchasing Blackblood, Ras, cloak and Belt, Chimera's inventory was looking a bit tight so he returned to Athkatla to do the kidnappers, in order to dump the red material picked up in the Graveyard (Kitthix showing his worth again there!).  While in the area he also solved the skinner murders in order to set up the Rejiek encounter in Trademeet - the efreeti and Kitthix providing a distraction for the Rune Assassins before Ras lasted just long enough to see off the ghasts and bone golem.  Immediately after that some ambushing thieves got Chimera to level 13.

There aren't that many items to buy for monks so Chimera used some of his remaining funds to buy the Sensate Amulet that I don't normally bother with.  Then he made his way to the Druid Grove to work through the enemies there.  That caused no problems, with Kyland Lind becoming a first victim of his quivering palm.  He left Adratha alone at that point until he got a bit more money to buy her potions later on.

After watching Cernd eat Faldorn for breakfast Chimera returned to Trademeet to clear the tomb and help Tiris.  With the extra funds from that he went back to buy the remaining potions of power from Adratha and kill the rakshasas (his summons performed poorly there and he resorted to running in and out of the house to stay safe).  One final little piece of action in Trademeet was successfully saving the philosopher, which tends to be difficult to do for a solo (level 14).

Back in Athkatla Chimera went to the Temple Sewers.  A rakshasa and troll were no problem after all his practice dealing with them in Trademeet.  Gaius then survived an initial assault and Chimera reverted to a run and stealth battle with Tarnor's gang.  Unfortunately I had forgotten that Roger would go hostile on sight of them, though at least Chimera had already bought some of his worthwhile potions.  After finishing off the gang with stealth shots Chimera went to sell the pick of their equipment before returning to get access to the Unseeing Eye.

The session ended with Chimera using a PfU scroll to go and kill the liches - finishing off with Kangaxx - and then getting restored for the effects of the level drain traps guarding the liches.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 52 - (update 9)

Barbra, half-elf jester (Grond0) & Demaclyne, elf archer (Gate70)

Holidays allowed a rare Monday session for this duo to emerge from the Dark.

The session started with talking to Adalon and brushing aside a few drow on the way into their city.  The first real action was the N'ashtar ambush where Barbra buffed up and blocked the path while requiring any attackers to wade through a cloudkill.  Those being targeted by Demaclyne's arrows didn't last long - here Chandrilla is on his own and about to die.  Phaere's ambush provided another opportunity for missile fire to take its toll - Demaclyne, ably assisted by some hasted skeleton warriors, destroying the opposition in the time it took Barbra to release a single magic missile spell.

The remaining tasks for Phaere were whipped through without any trouble - other than Phaere who realised too late she'd been the subject of an egg con.  We had already missed the chance to get the flesh armour so left Adalon alone and just ran out of the Underdark.  Back in Athkatla equipment was checked and Barbra spent not wisely, but too well on a number of spell scrolls.  As a result she couldn't afford to pay Cromwell to upgrade weapons.  To generate some funds the duo went to the Guarded Compound.  Upstairs, Barbra put one of her scrolls to good use - a triple skull trap sequencer killing 4 and wounding another of the 6 opponents and making the mop up a formality.  Their equipment paid for the purchase of the Robe of Vecna and the making of the Gesen bow.

Some more funds were generated from attacks on Captain Dennis (buffed Barbra, plus cloudkills again) and Dracandros in the Bridge District allowing Cromwell to put the Wave halberd together.  We'll be moving on to tackle Bodhi for the last time in the next session.

Stats (cont. from BG1):

Barbra, jester 27, 126 HPs (incl. 11 from ioun stone, 12 from familiar), 519 kills

Demaclyne, archer 20, 133 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 858 kills, 3 deaths

Valeria Karinor, human skald, update 1

Valeria is continuing her previous BG1-adventures (which you can read about in the BG1 no-reload thread) in Amn. She started as a level 11 skald. Also, Imoen is a single-class thief in this playthrough.

I have a problem with some strange mod interactions. I am using the BG2 Fixpack, BGT, Hard Times and Item Randomiser. After leaving Jon's Dungeon, I realised the music playing was still from BG1, so I changed it to BG2 music via setup.bgtmusic. Now, for some reason, this means my Item Randomiser doesn't work anymore (or, at least, its core feature doesn't). The bad thing here is: Since they were "randomised away" before this change, I can't seem to get the Helmet of Balduran, the Equalizer, and some items from the Adventurer's Mart, including the Belt of Hill Giant Strength, the Shield of Balduran and Vecna's Robe (so - pretty much the most powerful items one can buy)! Now, I still hope it's possible that they might instead be found somewhere else, but my general feeling is that they're lost forever. Any idea what I should do?

Anyway - the party started with Minsc joining Jaheira and Imoen (I plan to keep him). Notable battles include Ilyich, Imoen backstabbing the Otyugh, a large group of mephits, the mephit portals (Yoshimo joined the party here, I am keeping him until - well, until I can't anymore), Ulvoryl and the shadow thieves.

At the promenade, the party bought some items (including a staff mace for Jaheira), saved Aerie (my fifth party member) and encountered the aforementioned bug.

Next, the party visited the government district to trigger Delon's quest and also helped Jan and Viconia. At this point, I was rushing to get Mazzy, so I stole Daystar from its chest, left for the Umar Hills, fought some rangers, did the minor quests in Imnesvale, destroyed some undead, a bone golem and the Lord of Shadows.

Now, my plan for this playthrough was basically rushing to complete my party, including Imoen (I've never done a spellhold rush before), so I just payed Gaelan Bayle, fought Lassal, was ambushed by Suna Seni, killed the guild contact, was ambushed again, helped Renfeld and entered Bodhi's Lair.

Doing things as quickly as this without getting any significant items or experience isn't really recommended, especially in a no-reload run. While the general vampire fighting wasn't much of a problem with an ironskinned, immune to level drain Jaheira and some buffs, the real trouble started with Tanova, the vampire mage. My mages had no breach spell yet, I didn't have enough summons to make her waste her spells, so I foolishly charged, and the moment I did, most of my buffs from the previous battle expired, so I retreated with a pretty much dead and stunned Yoshimo, a barely alive Aerie and a level drained Mazzy and Minsc. Of course, Yoshimo was killed, and an attempt to use an enraged Minsc resulted in his death as well, due to losing control over him while he tried to reach Tanova and walked into a wall instead, doing effectively nothing (very, very strange).

I wasn't ready to give up yet - I realized Tanova propably only had some aggressive evocation spells left, so I used SI:E and shadow door with Aerie, hoping to be immune to everything the vampire mage could do (she had already used like 3 true sight spells) - this strategy, finally, worked, and Aerie killed her foe with 3 holy smite spells. Next, we went outside, and my cleric/mage resurrected and restored the other characters before the party continued.

Lassal was pulled to the others by Jaheira, and the divine spellcasters summoned elementals and skeletons for Bodhi. With a heavily buffed party, the vampire quickly gave up. Since the buffs were still active, I decided to take out the crypt king as well.

Before going to Brynnlaw, I wanted Valeria to reach at least level 13, so I quickly helped Xzar, fighting Prebeck and Sanasha first. Now, this battle was harder than it should have been. At first, everything looked fine, although Minsc and Yoshimo got confused, but Prebeck managed to fire a lightning bolt, almost killing several party members, including Valeria (though it luckily didn't hit her a second time, otherwise she might have been dead). Lightning bolts continue to be the bane of my existence. Anyway, after Xzar was assassinated, I followed Jaheira to the Harper Hold, but not before buffing with several spells and potions in Kangaxx's house. The hostile mages were killed first, and the battle was rather easy.

In Brynnlaw, a protected party fought Bodhi's vampires, defeated Perth and a lot of pirates. Valeria also closed Galvena's brothel for good.

Now, in Spellhold, Imoen rejoined the party, and the first level was cleared, though not without problems. I'm talking about the pit fiend you can fight at the gem portal there. I didn't realise I needed +3 weapons to hit it - and besides Daystar, I had pretty much nothing. Well, first, Aerie cleared the area with holy smite. The pit fiend was hitting often and hard, and I was able to deal damage with some spells at first, since its magic resistance only blocked some of them. Soon, no spells were left, and Valeria with her Daystar wasn't a good front line fighter - Mazzy died, the others were wounded, though the skald managed to score a few good hits against the demon (should have given Daystar to some other party member anyway). Then, I remembered I had just found a spear +3, took it from the bag of holding and gave it to Misnc who finished this tough opponent.

Well, at this level, Spellhold seems to be actually somewhat challenging. So far, the only relatively useful thing anyone in my party can do is summoning fire elementals and casting holy smite. The lack of the Shield of Balduran doesn't give me high hopes for the following beholder battles here and in the Underdark. I will gladly listen to tactical suggestions when it comes to dealing with them. We shall see.

I rarely use the Shield of Balduran nowadays, not even buy it - with SCS it's quite unreliable as Beholders will detect it (as well, as Cloak of Mirroring) and steal it. Polymorph Self > Mustard Jelly + extensive wands using (Cloudkill, Fire, Frost) is far more easy and safe approach (especially for Bard).

@Enuhal: Sorry I don't use mods, so I don't have any answers on what you should do about the randomizer issues.

Jelly form is a good approach vs. the beholders, just make sure to kill the elder orb quick, as the MR of the Jelly form doesn't stop imprisonment. Although I think SCS scripts don't use imprisonment? So maybe it doesn't matter in your install.

Thank you both for the suggestion :)

Valeria Karinor, human skald, update 2

In the next Spellhold area, Valeria turned some book pages, while Aerie used cc on Jaheira to deal with the mindflayer. Next, the group charged the kobolds, with Aerie casting holy smite. Now it was time to use jelly form for Valeria, which made dealing with the beholder quite easy.

Some fire elementals were sent ahead into the umber hulk trap, though they quickly died. The umber hulks were in turn defeated by a well-buffed party, with Jaheira tanking. Valeria used Daystar's sunray to deal with the undead spawn further south.

I didn't actually know that Dace isn't just a regular vampire and needs +3 weapons to hit him. My surprise allowed him to hit Valeria and dominate Mazzy, though I quickly switched some weapons around (now I have 3 +3 weapons). Imoen had to drink an invisibilty potion, or she would have died, but Dace was defeated a few seconds later with the help of some magic missles.

In the next area, I used some fire elementals and holy smites to deal with yuan-ti, minotaurs and the gauth, while cc took care of the ulitharid. With extensive buffs, summons and blunt magical weapons for everyone, the clay golem room was no problem. Got boots of speed for Jaheira here.

Some more summons helped with the trolls, and soon, it was time to buff up for Irenicus. I used tons of spells, including extra death wards and cc's due to wondrous recalls, and some potions to protect my party as good as possible. When it was time to fight, Mazzy fired away at Irenicus, using arrows of dispelling, while the others dealt with their clones.

With Irenicus' protections gone, Jaheira summoned an insect plague, the others fired their arrows and bullets, and the wizard soon had to flee.

Valeria quickly sold some equipment in Brynnlaw, got the horn for Saemon and is now ready for the City of Caverns.

Chimera {2} - human monk (third and final update)

Stubbornness and lack of concentration proved Chimera's downfall ...

He had a good session this morning before work, completing the following encounters:
- Prebek (improved invisibility).  He got to level 15 doing Xzar's quest.
- an ambush allowed him to test out his quivering palm: three bandits in a row going down to that.
- Mae'Var tasks (Kitthix and efreeti both survived spells while Chimera threw darts at Rayic).  Got to level 16 when reporting to Bloodscalp.
- used a potion of magic protection to get the berserker horn.  While the potion was still active he went to beat up Dracandros and then Captain Dennis.  In the course of that I absent-mindedly used the RoAC outside and was warned by the Cowled Wizards - so went to pay for a license.
- cleaned up the Fallen Paladins (level 17).
- provided Sir Sarles with some genuine illithium (killed Neb before he could disappear, though the acid blob trap in his room was pretty painful).
- recovered the Dawn Ring for the glory of Lathander.
- during that lot Chimera had talked his way out of the last of the vampire ambushes for the moment, so went to pay Gaelan Bayle and then ran through Aran Linvail's tasks.  In the vampire lair Tanova was palmed after waiting out true sights and there was enough time left on the attack to get Durst as well who had run into the spike room.  Most of the vampires upstairs were attacked by sling as they move around too much to make repeated standard stealth attacks easy.  Chimera got to level 18 on the top floor, before summons helped deal with the bottom floor.  He rested to get those back for the confrontation with Bodhi.  She killed the standard summons and survived a sunray, but was kicked to death while concentrating on Ras.  Reporting back to Aran got Chimera to level 19 and his final saving throw improvements.
- at this level the de'Arnise Hold should have been easy - and it was!  With nothing really to buy any more Chimera didn't bother looting so made rapid progress.  He got to level 20 by planting some food for the umber hulks (they killed Chimera's first incarnation, but he took no risks this time).  Torgal stood no chance even before he was webbed!  Chimera turned down the chance of a stronghold.
- he moved on to Umar Hills, but got a nasty discovery when he arrived there and found Ras was not in his inventory.  I've been careful not to have a full inventory, but Ras is easy to lose by exiting an area before it unsummons and reappears in your inventory - although I've been trying to avoid that I would guess that's what happened here.  With monks being able to make use of so few summons that's a serious blow.  He picked up Ilbratha as a replacement sword and made his way to the temple, getting to level 21 on the way there.  For the large undead groups he showed himself to pull the other undead away, before using summons to drain spells from the liches before going in for the kill - that included a critical for 74 on a bone golem!  The Shade Lord died to a sunray and a follow-up strike.

I was aware that Thaxy wouldn't be easy, but Chimera had a go at him anyway.  He initially tried summons, then mirrors, then quivering palm and then WW, but without much success and the 8 levels drained per breath were always a danger.  Eventually he settled for running up and down the stairs, doing a couple of attacks each time.  That still wasn't without danger, particularly due to the constant threat of being buffetted away from safety, but Chimera persisted and twice got Thaxy to near death (but he healed and refreshed stoneskins each time).  The combat lasted too long for me to finish this morning, so I came back to it after work.

I was wondering whether Chimera should rest to make things easier for himself, but while considering that sent him down for a look round.  However, unlike this morning I wasn't concentrating properly and Chimera's intended movement immediately got stuck for a moment when the pathing tried to take him too close to Thaxy - that was all the invitation the dragon needed for a fatal chomp.

Yikes! I hope Coremonk III doesn't become dragon food...can a monk use the AoP? If so, you could kill Thaxxy from a cove safely. Otherwise, taking on the shadow dragon alone is big risk indeed, especially solo. Perhaps summons like earth staff or fire staff could have made a difference in that encounter.

Dragons are hard to deal with for monks - sad to see Chimera die again.

@corey: The AoP can indeed be used by monks.

Valeria Karinor, human skald, update 3

In the City of Caverns, the group summoned fire elementals and aerial servants, first getting the Cloak of Mirroring, dealing with some undead and finally the king and the prince.

Now, it was time to enter the Underdark. Fist, Jaheira + cc + ranged weapons took care of some mind flayers and myconids, next, summons were added to fight the drow and kua-toa. FYI, I decided to skip any Underdark encounters if they are potentially dangerous and can be done later (so, anything outside of Ust'Natha) for now. After the general area was cleared, the group rested in the svirfneblin city and fought the balor, using their ever growing arsenal of +3 weapons.

Next, it was time to help Vithal. Since I needed the death spell-helm to save Phaere, Valeria drank a potion of master thievery and stole all of his treasure (not interested in fighting a high level mage right now). Valeria also entered the kua-toa caves, with Jaheira's fire elementals easily taking care of the creatures. The prince was soon slain and his blood and bracers taken.

Now, Valeria met Adalon and entered Ust'Natha. First, the party bought a ton of useful items and received their quest, next, they were attacked by a hostile party outside of the city. I forgot about the death spell, leaving Valeria without summons. Minsc and Jaheira got confused, but the enemies were incapable of really hurting them because of Jaheira's ironskins and Cloak of Mirroring and Minsc's mirror images (thanks to Ilbratha). Eventually, Valeria was victorious. To rescue Phaere, Aerie was buffed and cast death spell via her helm.

Back at the city, Valeria fought some arena battles, including a beholder in her jelly form. She and Jaheira also summoned skeleton warriors (bought the spell in Ust'Natha) and fire elementals to help Aerie win the wizard duels.

Jelly form was used again for Phaere's next quest. Valeria also had to kill Quile and her mages for an aboleth. She asked the svirfneblin captain for his helm and let Solaufein escape. Summons took care of slime cultists. So far, so good.

Things started to go bad again when it was time for Deirex. I was dreading this fight - my party isn't really equipped to fight a lich head on (and all protection from undead scrolls are removed via mods). Everything went even worse than expected, though I also got a bit lucky: First, Deirex' time stop was disrupted via Daystar's sunray, but he still managed to dispel most of the protection spells (though luckily not Valerias!), stun 4 party members and kill Aerie. Things went from bad to worse: Wail of the banshee killed Imoen, and flesh to stone affected Minsc. Luckily, the efreet summoned by Deirex had already used his fireball and attacked Jaheira, so Minsc was not permanently killed. Since Deirex' last PFMW ended, it was up to Valeria to kill the lich with +2 arrows, and she succeeded before any more harm could be done. She (and the no longer stunned party members) also lured the efreet far away before killing him so that he wouldn't fireball near Minsc, should he return.

Now, luckily, you can buy the Staff of Earth in Ust'Natha, and it has Stone to Flesh charges, so Jaheira could resurrect Aerie and Imoen and Minsc was saved and rejoined the party. However, I didn't realise that this quest is on a timer - the "one day" Jarlaxle gave Valeria was already over, so I couldn't reenter the lower part Deirex' tower. Luckily, Jarlaxle also didn't reveal Valeria's real identity to the drow (despite having threatened that he would do so). Still, it was possible for the party to loot the upper part of the tower and kill everyone inside house Jae'llat with the help of some summons.

Minsc switched the eggs and the party soon escaped from the Underdark.

Back in Amn, they were immediately ambushed, and Aerie only survived thanks to Jaheira throwing the Cloak of Mirroring over to her. Mazzy's sidequest in trademeet started, so the party also dealt with Barl. Valeria gave Kruin the silver blade, mainly because she has no magic license and wasn't prepared for a fight. The group also bought all of the remaining items from the adventurer's mart (though still no Robe of Vecna, Shield of Balduran or Belt of Hill Giant Strength (or Bracers of AC3, RoAC and propably some other items, for that matter)). Mencar and his party were taken care off, Yoshimo's heart was delivered and the party freed Hendak, but not before Mazzy fought her duel.

Next, I will start doing all the quests people usually do in Chapter 2 and 3 :)

Can't use the AoP (though as Enuhal notes this can be affected by mods) and also can't use a staff - that's a large part of the reason for the restricted summons available to monks.  Ras would have made a big difference to that combat as if it could engage Thaxy between buffets it wouldn't take long for a high level monk to batter the dragon to bits.

I'm 99% sure that monks can use the AoP in an unmodded game. However, most fixpacks remove this option since it's intended to be used only by spellcasters.

Yes, I think that's right.  I believe monks could also use a range of wands in the unmodded game that are not available in BGT.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 52 - (update 10)

Barbra, half-elf jester (Grond0) & Demaclyne, elf archer (Gate70)

We squeezed in another session today to get close to the completion of SoA.

The first task was to take on Bodhi.  The problems with our save referred to earlier in the run meant that the back door to the vampire lair was locked.  The console let us in to find where Bodhi was hiding and she didn't last long.  However, on the way out more vampires generated and Demaclyne was drained.  Then on exiting the lair there was Bodhi again, summoning yet more vampires to drain him further down to level 13!

After a restoring trip to the temple the duo reported to Elhan and moved on to Suldanesselar.  Trying to battle the golems there without any buffs remaining resulted in Demaclyne getting badly wounded and Barbra resorted to acting as an invisible blocker to allow him free rein with his shots.  After a rest some skeleton warriors were summoned to help with Nizi - acting in support of Demaclyne's improved hasted called shots they took the dragon down in very little time.  At the temple the Avatar was summoned to deal with the opposition to make things easy.  Our intrepid friends are now at the palace and have opened up the passage to the Tree of Life ready for next time.

Stats (cont. from BG1):

Barbra, jester 30, 133 HPs (incl. 12 from ioun stone, 12 from familiar), 538 kills

Demaclyne, archer 22, 139 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 889 kills, 3 deaths

If you look at a D&D description of monks, it says that monks are supposed to use Cleric hit dice, can use Cleric scrolls AND WANDS. They goofed in vanilla and made it arcane wands too.

Valeria Karinor, human skald, update 4

In the slum sewers, the party obtained Lilarcor, entered the slaver's base, killed captain Heigan and freed the slaves. Some mages were dealt with as well.

There was a second of dread when Valeria accidentally triggered a flesh to stone trap in the bridge district (Imoen should have detected it, really - she was hanging around long enough). I don't have much equipment to improve saving throws, but in Ust'Natha, the party obtained 3 potions of magic shielding, making sure that nothing happened.

The party also solved the murders, obtaining the second part of Gesen's bow for Imoen, killed Tidir's kidnappers and the fallen paladins and started Mae'Var's tasks. Rayic was breached, some pirates were defeated and Mae'Var himself didn't stand a chance.

Next, Jaheira left for Harper Hold, so the party fought some mercenaries to get her back. I had so many potions at this point that I decided to travel to Watcher's Keep, buy some stuff (including Firetooth for Valeria and the Short Sword of Mask +4 for Mazzy) and clear level 1 (though not the statues).

The group also did the Sir Sarles quest and obtained the iMoD, killed Borinall, the hostile bridge party and the guards in Saerk's estate.

Now, it was time for Trademeet and the Druid Grove. Jaheira was attacked by Harpers, and Valeria used the Harp of Pandemonium to give her allies more space. The party cleared the troll mound next. Ihtafeer and her rakshasa were quickly slain, and so were a couple of shadow druids. Jaheira summoned fire elementals to deal with Faldorn in a surprisingly close fight.

Back in Trademeet, two sunrays took care of the undead in the crypt, and Rejiek was defeated. Valeria bought all the relevant items with her remaining gold. Then, she travelled to De'Arnise Keep.

After dealing with a couple of trolls, Glacias was killed, and some golems destroyed. Imoen distracted the umber hulks, and while Tor'Gal summoned many allies, they all stood no chance against the party.

So far, so good. Most of the quests should be relatively straightforward, but I want Aerie to reach cleric and mage level 15 before doing the really dangerous stuff, if possible. Next is propably the planar sphere.

Phantom - human monk (1st and final update)

I quickly took a monk through BG1 this morning and had enough time left before breakfast to:

- complete everything in the dungeon
- set the circus to rights
- put in new management to the Copper Coronet
- clear the Graveyard tombs

However, my no healing/antidote restriction caught Phantom out while working through the spiders on the way to Pai'Na.  He was poisoned by an ettercap, which initially I wasn't too worried about.  However, his 61 HPs were being drained away fast and a LMD on the ettercap didn't make much of a dent in his losses.  When he successfully laid hands on himself I thought that would surely be enough to survive - but unfortunately not.

I'll have a break for a few days and restore a bit of patience before having another go ...

With such a huge restriction in your own survivability, you should at least wait until level 11 before going after Pai Na with a monk. It's not that long of a trip to get there when you're by yourself.

There's lots of protection from poison scrolls - that would have worked well.

I agree and I have sometimes purchased those.  The reference in my original post to patience was partly a reflection on not having bothered to get one this time - or just avoiding any chance of being hit (easy to do against ettercaps using speed and stealth, but takes slightly longer).

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 52 - (update 11)

Barbra, half-elf jester (Grond0) & Demaclyne, elf archer (Gate70)

This morning saw the duo safely through to make a start on ToB.

At the Tree of Life they killed the parasites, while leaving a skeleton warrior behind for Jon to target with his spells.  A couple more then appeared to help finish him off.

In the hell trials a mis-click meant we fought the dragon rather than settling things peacefully - though as Demaclyne has dragons as his racial enemy it could have been a Freudian slip!  Barbra resisted the temptation to sacrifice Demaclyne to get revenge.  After letting Sarevok flail ineffectively at Barbra for a while it was time to face the Slayer.  Some pre-positioned skeleton warriors provided a distraction to allow the demons to be taken down.  The Slayer was able to finish those off easily enough, but had more trouble making progress against Barbra and ultimately was shot down by Demaclyne's hail of arrows.  I did notice that the Slayer seemed to be doing a bit of damage in revenge - I guess that was spell turning reflecting the called shot additional damage portion of the arrows.

Moving on to the Throne of Bhaal we were initially caught slightly napping by the appearance of the Black Reavers in support of Illasera.  However, a swift retreat to buff and produce a few more summons then produced a quick victory.

The first pocket plane challenge went off fairly well.  The only slight problem was Duke Eltan at the end, whose physical mirror prevented Demaclyne's missiles.  Gesen went through them for Barbra, but the amount of lag made it impractical for Demaclyne to run him round.  Instead Barbra produced a skeleton warrior to occupy him while being meleed.

In Saradush Squip received 5 gold for information that enabled the opening of a magic shop.  The final action of the session was to horrify Viekang causing him to commit a messy suicide.

Stats (cont. from BG1):

Barbra, jester 31, 148 HPs (incl. 12 from ioun stone, 12 from familiar), 562 kills

Demaclyne, archer 23, 142 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 906 kills, 3 deaths

Valeria Karinor, human skald, update 5

Valeria and her party killed Valygar, using his body to open the planar sphere. Inside, summons took care of the halflings.

With Tansheron's, Gesen's and Firetooth, Mazzy, Imoen and Valeria shot an adamantite golem. Jaheira, protected by the Cloak of Mirroring, distracted the cowled wizards, absorbing their ADHW spell while the rest of the party breached and killed them. With the remaining buffs, the group also cleared the ice and fire rooms before going back to Lavok. The necromancer was helpless against Jaheira's cloak. With some buffs, including improved haste, a demon heart was quickly obtained (had another game crash, so I had to reload here, only redid a single demon battle though, nothing changed). Some more adamantite golems were killed and the sphere was back in Athkatla.

Next, the party travelled to the temple district, buffing for the guarded compound. Imoen detected traps while the others used ranged weapons and summons, soon charging into melee after the traps were disarmed. The battle was quick and easy, though Imoen got backstabbed.

Summons and the party now attacked Tarnor and his friends, and after Aerie breached the mage, the enemies were quickly dealt with. Valeria also killed Mekrath to start her stronghold quest. In the planar prison, both mages at the entry point were defeated before they could erect their protections, and the other slaves stood no chance. A lot of summons drained the Warden and his yuan-ti mages of their dangerous spells, and eventually, Imoen dispelled his mirror images, allowing the remaining skeleton warriors and elementals to kill him.

The party also hunted down two liches: In the bridge district, the elemental lich wasn't killed by the party's three sunrays thanks to his MI, but he, in return, couldn't kill any party members during his initial timestop, so +4 weapons allowed Minsc, Imoen and Valeria to hit him despite his improved mantle.

The city gates lich was slain before even casting timestop, since his script didn't use protection spells first because Yoshimo had already entered his chamber weeks ago.

Now, Valeria completed all of her stronghold quests, including an invasion of the theater, the optimal way (with charisma 25 thanks to "friends" and intelligence 25 thanks to potions, she could rewrite the script and write her own score as well). Next, she will explore the Windspear Hills.
