Oh goodness, those restrictions! So what items are there with those passives that you need that you can get? Ring of Gaxx is impossible, I think, since there's absolutely no way for you to become immune to his imprison ability. You have immunities to charm, hold, poison, disease and the useless normal weapons... Level drain's an issue; are Monk's allowed to wear the AoP in your setup? Also no way to get straight-up immunity to stun, to my knowledge: how are you planning to, well, not die to the first mage that casts PWS in your direction? You need 84 HP with the pale green Ioun stone to hit 92, which is all of 7 levels away; I know BG2 gives experience like crazy, but... Really, how do you plan to do this?

Bg2ee run update 1.3,

Hear text as mp3,

edit: audio is now the correct one... sorry guys!

Stamping out slavers by Jaheira,

"It is about time" these slavers are dealt with and our party could use the exercise… both physical and moral but I digest. We entered the Copper Coronet looking for nothing more than a good night's rest and found it under the new ownership of a sleazy man named Lehtinan… we pretended to be interested in his sick little games, so as to gain access to the back rooms. Obviously the local cowled wizards turn a blind eye to what goes on in here so we cut loose with spells and put a swift end to this affront to balance.

The new owner… Hendak told us of yet more slaves and I almost refused because of the sad state of our gear however we could again use spells so that would give us an edge, so yes, a quick rest and we set off to right this wrong. Unfortunately as soon as we entered the sewer tunnels beneath the slums we encountered some peons and Imoen dispatched them with a fireball that also killed a human… he must have run down here during the previous bar fight but despite feeling wretched there was nothing for it so we pressed onwards. The next encounter was a slime that we had considerable trouble even hurting until Puk remembered his skeleton and Yoshimo tossed in some of his traps… so much for being mighty adventurers.

baldr103-crop-u3814.jpgbaldr104-crop-u3882.jpgbaldr105-crop-u3891.jpgbaldr106-crop-u3900.jpg

We stepped up into the main meeting area and set about weeding this garden of its parasites… poor sweet Imoen became an avenging ware-cat as she unleashed a tempest into the room… single handily decimating the left passageway as the rest of us concentrated on killing their leader, Captain Haegan.

baldr107-crop-u3909.jpgbaldr108-crop-u3918.jpgbaldr109-crop-u3927.jpgbaldr111-crop-u3945.jpg

After freeing the children with an extra 100 gold for their new beginning, we still have enough gold to purchase a magic licence as seems wise and also a new mace (18 str) for Imoen… I still feel the accusations coming from people's eyes as we walk past but at least they don't want to attack us openly any more.

Spectre can't use the AoP, but there is an amulet providing constant PfE for sale that he will pick up quite soon.  Level drain is a small issue, but not his biggest problem as things will find it hard to hit him if he uses stealth attacks.

I agree the lack of the Ring of Gaxx will be his biggest obstacle - missing out on the bonus of 2 to saving throws is going to make him far more vulnerable for much of the run and losing the bonuses to MR and AC are also both significant.

He has no immunity to hold, only slow (normally I would use Arbane to avoid hold person, but that's not an option for Spectre).  Essentially he needs to avoid combat with mages, except where he is able to run away quickly after attacking (hiding after attacking will also be a viable option at higher levels, but only in unlighted areas), as he will be vulnerable to spell attacks throughout the game.

Spectre {3} - human monk (2nd and final update)

Spectre failed to get very far into BG2, although once again he was the victim of pretty cheesy tactics by the AI ...

Kalah was stunned into submission before Spectre went to report to Gaelan Bayle.

At the Copper Coronet he used stealth & stun to kill the prison guard (meaning no mages were spawned).  The animals were killed from stealth, leaving the beastmaster pretty helpless on his own.

Spectre travelled to the Graveyard and handed back a teddy bear to get to level 10.  He started attacking a skeleton warrior in one of the tombs, but after being hit for a 36 HP critical decided perhaps he'd better prioritise getting a ioun stone.  I'd originally planned to wait until level 11 for that so that he had poison immunity, which would have made things easier.  However, using stealth and horror Spectre successfully worked his way through various spiders and ettercaps without giving them any chance to attack.

Inside Pai'Na's nest Spectre's first stun worked, but Pai'Na saved twice against a reactivated ability and produced her spiders.  Spectre immediately ran to be able to get away from the entrance before emerging spiders blocked her in, but it appeared that they didn't want to leave the nest anyway.  I thought that would make the battle relatively straight-forward and things appeared to be going well when he used a couple of horrors to scare most of the spiders (preventing lots of them from clustering round the exit point to block his exit).  Things quickly turned sour though when he ventured further from the exit.  First he appeared to go over a one-way section of web and suddenly found himself unable to retreat back to the exit - movement the other way was blocked by lots of scared spiders.
Blocked_zpsbfcff3bf.jpg

Second he found all the spiders started attacking him despite the horror (that's not an unusual bug with horror, which is why my spellcasters never use it, though it's still pretty useful as a Bhaal ability).  He frantically retaliated and killed several while saving against poison at least 3 times.  However, eventually his luck ran out and he was poisoned - this screenshot was taken a few seconds after the actual poison hit, so he's already taken a fair bit of poison damage.  He did finally kill enough spiders to be able to move towards the exit just after that, but normal spider poison is exceptionally vicious and he didn't even make it out of the nest before collapsing.

Snip...

He has no immunity to hold.

The Slayer is immune to hold.

Sorry Grond0... Death by poison... I was hoping to see a Monk at the finish line, what a bugger!

I just can't really figure Grond0's hugely debilitating restrictions when most of the normal runs end in failure already. Why handicap yourself when you're already getting slaughtered without those handicaps?

I've played the game a lot and without restrictions it tends to feel too easy (despite the fact that I die a lot to mistakes ).  Using restrictions helps maintain the feeling of challenge in order to keep things interesting ...

Quad multiplayer attempt 1 - (update 8)
Grond0, Dogdancing, corey_russell, Gate70

After another couple of weeks break due to real world commitments the Quad resumed their progress towards hell today.

Starting at the kuo-toa tunnels they made a confident start while working through beholders and drow as well as the kuo-toa and their prince.  However, a reality check hit when Yuledan took on a couple of demon knights by himself and became a victim of the vorpal sword used by one of them.  He was quickly revenged though and the rod of resurrection soon had the party up and running again.

A drow ambush on the way to Adalon was no real obstacle and the Quad were soon investigating the drow shops.  On their way to rescue Phaere they looked to see what impact traps left by Iskvael earlier would have - but were not surprised when the answer was none (traps left by non-protagonists tend to evaporate in multi-player when you rest or leave the area) and were quickly able to put down the opposition.  That was even more true when Phaere's kidnappers appeared.

Running through Phaere's tasks saw Ratic get the first HLA for the party, but the others soon joined in the fun.  Yuledan used sanctuary to swap round the eggs and Phaere and the Matron Mother suffered the consequences.  Yuledan delayed slightly on the way out of the city to buy a few last potions - that resulted in the drow going hostile, but they didn't have time to bar the city gates before the Quad left.  Adalon was given her eggs back on the way out of the Underdark.

Back in Athkatla a bit of equipment sorting out took place and Cromwell was asked to forge Crom Faeyr, the Equalizer, Gesen and the Wave.  Fully equipped, the party had no problems clearing the top level of the vampire lair.  Downstairs, Yuledan belatedly realised the drawbacks of meleeing Bodhi without drain protection and was reduced to level 4/4 as a result.  Wewa threw herself into the fray as a distraction and took something of a beating as a result, but succeeded in sending Bodhi on her way.

After visiting a temple and reporting to Elhan, the final destination for the session was Suldanesselar.  Progress there has been pretty smooth to date, with a fitting end to the session as a full cohort of summons (including a deva for the first time) occupied Nizi while he was blasted with attacks.

Stats (cont. from BG1):

Grond0 - Ratic, barbarian 21, 129 HPs, 901 kills

Dogdancing - Wewa, berserker 21, 134 HPs, 534 kills, 4 deaths

corey_russell - Yuledan, fighter 14 / cleric 15, 115 HPs (incl. 5 HPs from amulet), 503 kills, 6 deaths
Gate70 - Iskvael, mage 14 / thief 17, 60 HPs, 192 kills, 3 deaths

Haha, well, I guess it was only time before overconfidence and inexperience did me in. :P

Platt, Human Cavalier, 4th and final update.

I actually made it to Jon's first death at the Tree of Life quite easily due to Nishruu abuse, but I miscalculated during the hell trials; I thought myself completely safe from Beholders with all-negative saves, and didn't realize that there was an Imprisonment spell mixed in with the lot. On the plus side, this is the furthest I've ever gone with a team... And my grasp of mechanics has definitely improved, despite that shaky performance with Imprison. I might try a fighter -> druid next; I'm getting a tad sick of taking ~30 HP of damage every single time I go in to melee something. Or archer again.

Thoughts on Cavalier: it's definitely an improvement over vanilla Paladin. The lack of ranged weapons is so easy to overcome, and free immunity to poison and fear (charm's not as important in 2; I had to keep Chaotic Commands on him anyways to avoid Confusion. Saved some time in 1, no doubt) is just neat. One of the better pure-melee classes, in my opinion, but I definitely wish I had one of the skin spells to avoid damage. A Pro. Abjuration at the end would've been nice as well :D

Sorry to hear that Epsil0

Elder orbs use one ranged imprisonment as do a few other enemies, I've had several of those too over the years.

Hard luck Epsil0, but it sounds like you had a good run.  You could consider trying a ranger / cleric if you want ironskins.

For those elder orbs there's always a berserker to laugh at imprisonment while enraged.  Alternatively of course you could just leave them alone and go down the other side to collect the tear - remembering your fear protection if you're not a cavalier ...

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 54 - (update 1)

Jackie, halfling thief (Grond0) & Pariah, dwarf cleric (Gate70)

After finishing off Sarevok in BGEE, this pair were imported into BG2EE yesterday and made a bit of initial progress in between crashes.

The dungeon was pretty easy given the availability of a skeleton army to help out.  I just got the one screenshot, illustrating a spot of lag as the clone demonstrates how the dead can talk.  Ulvaryl managed to flutter away in bat shape.

After sorting out the circus the duo moved on to talk to Gaelan Bayle and oversee a change of management at the Copper Coronet.  Both of them took significant damage from the animals there, illustrating their potential difficulties when just fighting rather than using their special abilities.

Some stealthy travel provoked a couple of ambushes, but they were no problem with skeletons available.  Pariah couldn't find a sweet spot in Prebek's house to cast without Sanasha seeing him, but was able to silence the opposition anyway.

The final action of the session was assaulting Officer Dirth to provide Pariah with rather better defences in melee.

Stats:

Jackie, thief 11, 62 HPs, 36 kills

Pariah, cleric 9, 61 HPs, 13 kills, 0 deaths (2 in BG1)

Spectre {4} - human monk (update 1)

As with his previous incarnation, Spectre is limited to the use of his fists as weapons and to the use of passive only magic items,  i.e. no wands, potions, scrolls, summoning items etc.  He is able to use his monk and Bhaal special abilities.

He made it through BG1 with few alarms and has started his progress in BG2 this morning by escaping from the dungeon.  Unlike his earlier namesakes this one is low on HPs, so made use of vampiric touch to boost them before triggering dangerous traps.  The golems could potentially have been dangerous, but his HPs were boosted there as well (and both were stunned anyway).  The cambion was also stunned (incidentally, one point of interest there is that the cambion can see through invisible, but that doesn't prevent an attacker from getting the +4 to hit when attacking from stealth / invisibility).  Just for fun I stunned this mephit portal, though I didn't experiment to try and see if that would stop it producing new mephits (monk stun only lasts a few seconds anyway).  Ulvaryl once again got away - surprisingly surviving a vampiric touch when already at near death.

Spectre got to level 9 on exiting the dungeon and picked up 7 HPs - thus finishing his die rolls 7 below average. He quickly stealthed through the circus to stun Kalah before going to talk to Gaelan Bayle.  At the Copper Coronet the Beastmaster failed as usual to take revenge for Tabitha and Spectre handed control of the place over to Hendak.

Returning a teddy bear got Spectre to level 10.  He did the other Graveyard quests before travelling under stealth to trigger the Suna Seni ambush - horror helping defeat that handily.  A bit more travelling saved Renfeld.  After returning him, Spectre popped in and out of Prebek's house, dodging spells (Prebek saved against horror) until the mage was reduced to attempting melee.  Spectre watched Xzar die, but this time failed to stun Lucette before she got away.

Travelling to the Bridge District he came across an orog ambush, but had already used his horror abilities on some muggers at the Docks and had to run after killing only 1 of them.  After resting, he solved the skinner murders (but didn't try taking on the Rune Assassins yet) and punished some kidnappers (just letting Lady Elgea go).

Some easy XP for collecting a necklace for Mae'Var was sufficient to get Spectre to level 11.  The poison immunity that provides will make going to get a ioun stone next somewhat safer.

I think the standard way a melee in BG 2 avoids damage is using Ilbratha ability (mirror image). The bonus merchant in the Copper Coronet also offers a weapon that reduces damage, which combined with armor of faith would reduce lots of damage indeed.

Spectre {4} - human monk (update 2)

It's so far, so good for Spectre, although he's had his first close call of the run.

At the Graveyard Spectre quickly worked through various spiders and ettercaps before taking on Pai'Na.  The difficulties of moving around in the web there still caused a few problems and Spectre took a flame strike before finishing off the druid.  Without any threat from their venom the spiders were then easy to exterminate.

Spectre hasn't picked up much of the available treasure so far, but still had enough money to buy the Sensate amulet and girdle of hill giant strength (the latter makes a big difference to his combat ability when not using DUHM).

After returning the necklace to Mae'Var, Spectre cleared the mephits from Rayic's house using horror.  His fists weren't up to golems yet though so he started the Sir Sarles quest.  Neb saved against a couple of stunning blows and disappeared and Spectre found he couldn't hurt the spirits yet either, so left that quest for now as well.    He had more joy with the Fallen Paladins - taking them on one by one with a rest in the middle.

Back at the Graveyard he cleared the tombs (apart from the Crypt King that he can't hit yet) - using stealth attacks on shadow fiends and taking advantage of his weapon speed advantage on mummies and skeleton warriors.

Searching for something he could attempt Spectre went into the sewers under the Copper Coronet.  Horror was used to disable spellcasters there and stealth and/or stun against the carrion crawlers.  Stealth, horror and vampiric touch dealt with the priest of Cyric and stun with Captain Haegan.  Spectre had no way to kill trolls, but released their prisoner anyway.  He used horror to split up the slaver wizards; this one recovered its senses just in time to kill itself, while the other was blinded by the prismatic spray trap and would have been helpless even before being stunned.  The reward from Hendak got Spectre to level 12.

Now that he had +2 fists, Spectre went to kill the child spirits then showed himself to Neb.  A backstab was largely repaired by lay on hands and Spectre then swiftly ended Neb's reign of terror.  After completing the Sir Sarles quest Spectre recovered a relic for Lathander to finish his work for the temples.

Picking up another loose end Spectre stunned his way past a pair of stone golems on the way to confront Rayic Gethras.  He tried stunning the mage while he was casting true sight, but he saved with a 1, so not much chance of success there.  Instead, Spectre hopped up and down the stairs avoiding spells.  The danger there is from PW:stun because it takes effect so fast and Rayic did actually manage to tag Spectre with one of those - but he was already in transit and Rayic didn't follow downstairs to get a free attack in.  He never got close again to landing a spell and was eventually killed by the first blow that went through his stoneskins (he was already near death from vampiric touch and LMD).

Quickly running through the remaining tasks for Mae'Var and then reporting to Bloodscalp got Spectre to level 13 and the ability to use a quivering palm.  That got used for the first time on Mae'Var after his pet cleric got scared (the cleric also died in a 2 for 1 offer).

Tidying up more loose ends, Spectre went back to finish off the slaver trolls using quivering palm.  Then dealt with the Crypt King (dodging outside to avoid the horror, then closing to melee).

Sarcasm is such an ugly word ...  As a previous post mentioned he's 7 HPs below average.  He's currently level 14, which means he's got a base of 65 HPs.  Wearing the Sensate Amulet gives +5 and the pale green ioun stone +6 for a current total of 76 HPs.

I see. I don't know what "below average" means (at least, in the context of HP), I am not a statistician. Thanks for the HP update, I think Coremonk III has 65. Coremonk III I think is level 10.

I'm just using average in the everyday sense.  For a die roll that's the maximum score + the minimum score divided by 2 - so the average for the d8 that Spectre uses is 4.5.  He gets die rolls up to level 9 (8 rolls as the first is automatically maximum), so to be 7 below average means that his actual die rolls averaged about 3.6 rather than 4.5.

Spectre {4} - human monk (update 3)

Spectre started the session by paying Gaelan Bayle and collecting goodies from Aran Linvail.  He went on to confront Lassal - sending him packing at the expense of paying to get his 4 drained levels back.  The Guild Contact soon died to a palm and reporting to Aran got Spectre to level 14 - picking up some magic resistance.

He moved immediately on to the vampire lair.  Stealth with stun and quivering palm cleared most of the top floor.  With Tanova I had intended to attack her while she was casting true sight, but accidentally triggered both of those (and they weren't replaced on resting).  However, she was one-shotted anyway with a palm.  Spectre then had another lucky escape against a greater ghoul when he appeared to get stuck for a moment in a doorway when trying to retreat after attacking - allowing the ghoul to get an attack in on him.  The rest downstairs were easy enough, though Spectre did get drained once when he risked sticking around for more than 1 stealth attack on a vampire (trying to make best use of a stunning blow ability).  After killing Lassal he didn't fancy taking on Bodhi with no support and no level drain protection - so just left her there for now.

After another visit to the temple he went after Mencar's gang.  Out of habit he attacked Brennan first using quivering palm, even though he's not allowed to use Brennan's invisibility ring.  That was successful and he then went into stealth and used the stairs and inn exit to break up the opposition.  Pooky was stunned at the third attempt and failed to recover.  Smaeluv was just beaten up - a visit to the nearby temple repaired the damage he caused.  Amon was stunned using his final ability and a vampiric touch ensured he didn't recover.  Mencar had been scared by Spectre's Bhaal horror earlier and, in the small room, took quite a bit of damage before he recovered and it didn't take long then to hide round partitions a few times and finish him off - Spectre got to level 15 with his death.

Venturing out of the City for the first time, Spectre went to Trademeet.  With his quivering palm only killing 1 or 2 trolls a day it took him a number of rests to clear the Grove of them - but he did so.  The palm also dealt with Kyland Lind after all his druids had been scattered using horror.  The druids didn't then last long against stunning fists of this quality.  Ihtafeer was stunned and the other rakshasa had no chance without him - Saadat did manage a cloud kill just before dying (Jalaal was already stunned here), but Spectre was immune to that anyway.  One spore colony was palmed and the other died before it could produce any myconids (which would have been slightly risky as Spectre is vulnerable to confusion).  The final group of druids were annoyed with LMD and split up with horror for easy disposal before Spectre watched Cernd strut his stuff.

Spectre wanted to get up to level 16 before taking on the genies, so went to Watcher's Keep.  He did the left hand side first, before finding vampiric wraiths were waiting in the middle.  They didn't seem to be subject to the palm effect and are also immune to stun.  However, running round in the area he had already cleared allowed Spectre to keep just enough of a lead to lock them in.  After getting his levels restored (but not resting to avoid the vampiric wraiths relocating) he cleared the rest of the enemies on the top level, then took the book to activate the first 2 statues (disposing of those using stealth & stun).  That was enough to get him to level 16.

With his spell saving throw now down to 1, Spectre returned to Trademeet to take on the genies.  As it happened there was no need to worry about saving throws as Taquee was stunned and the other 2 palmed before they could cast petrification.  He bought the Belt of Inertial Barrier and Cloak of Displacement before saving a philosopher's life and clearing the tomb.

@Grond0: I see what you did there for average/below average - I finally know what you mean now, thanks!

Maybe you need to allow different weapons, rather than just fists. Otherwise, what are you going to do about Nylee's Shambling Mounds, which in my experience have blunt immunity? (fists are blunt) Not to mention could use sword of flame to dispatch trolls....

I'm happy with the quivering palm for trolls.  Not sure if that will affect shambling mounds, but killing those is not necessary so I'll probably just leave them alone anyway.  It's the ToB enemies where I think the lack of other weapons is more of a potential problem.

Spectre {4} - human monk (update 4)

In search of XP (there are no items of interest to him there) Spectre went to the de'Arnise Hold.  He got lots of experience there - not just from trolls, but plenty from yuan-ti that turned up while he was trying to rest to get his troll-killing palm ability back.  The yuan-ti mage saved against a couple of opening stunning blows, but was then scared from the shadows before being chased down and eventually stunned.  He got to level 17 beating up the golems; a single DUHM saw all of them except the iron golem off - it got a hit in and Spectre had to resort to stealth attacks to stun it and complete the job.  It's not long since I had a character die to umber hulk confusion, so Spectre took the precaution of using horror on them before closing to melee with stunning blows.  Torgal survived one attack with the palm while he was lying on the floor, but after resting Spectre tried again - and failed again.  Another rest and Spectre hoped for third time lucky, but still no joy.  Finally, though, Torgal's luck ran out.  Spectre reported in to Nalia, but turned down the opportunity for a stronghold.

Back in Athkatla Spectre went to the temple sewers.  He helped Roger, then stunned the rakshasa (after both kobold casters were scared).  For Tarnor's gang Spectre waited out Gaius' true sights then used standard tactics of annoying the party with a LMD from the shadows then using horror to split up and disable the enemies for disposal with stealth attacks, stuns etc.  Roger was annoyed by Draug Fea passing near him, but Spectre is not using potions anyway, so that was no loss.  Spectre got to level 18 dealing with all enemies except Gaius with no problems.  After multiple attempts I concluded that his saving throws are probably too good to be affected by horror, so Spectre used LMD from the shadows to attempt to pull him towards Mekrath's Lair.  That was unsuccessful, so he placed an item at the limit of vision and started moving onto it to make himself visible before pulling back and hiding before Gaius could cast.  That took quite a while to go through his spells, but eventually he did so and came forward to melee.  Spectre went to sit on the stairs, ready to run if Gaius started casting a touch spell (like maze), but there was no need.

While in the area Spectre went on to sort out Mekrath.  He was prepared to retreat and try out horrors, but Mekrath shook himself to death at the first touch of his palm.  His yuan-ti mages were soon split up using horror and quickly finished off.

He started the Unseeing Eye quest, but didn't reform the bridge as his saving throws are not sufficient to protect against the prismatic spray trap.  He also had another escape on the way there when I didn't expect to one-shot a wraith and got caught out by the auto-pause on enemy death - Spectre having to save against a shadow fiend touch as a result (I've now turned that auto-pause off).

I didn't fancy Spectre's chances against the demons in the Planar Prison, so the next target was Umar Hills.  Spectre didn't dare attack the mimic there, but did take out Valygar and the rangers on the way to the ruined temple.  He opened proceedings there by stunning Anath and then worked his way into the temple itself.  He got to level 19 almost immediately on entry there and was careful not to get boxed in by the shadows and shadow fiends that have the follow invisible script inside.  I wasn't confident though about taking on liches with their ability to see through invisibility so Spectre left the rest of the enemies and returned to Athkatla.  He's put items from the temple into storage and picked up the acorns ready for a trip to Windspear Hills next time.

Sounds like a very innovative run Grond0! Hope Spectre doesn't become a specter himself...
