Gracchus - dwarf kensai (update 1)

Gracchus is operating under my standard restrictions of no healing potions or antidotes or any other item-based active healing.  He had earned enough XP in BG1 to get to level 9 at the start of the dungeon - a good final die roll there took him to 100 HPs (1 above average).

He rested regularly to regenerate damage while moving through the dungeon. He used horror to scare the mephits with disabling attacks and had no problems in clearing everything - a kai assault helping with Ulvaryl.

Two hits were sufficient to end Kalah's dreams of world domination and get Gracchus up to level 10.  Using Kalah's ring Gracchus was able to get cheap prices at the shops - buying the ring of air control even though he hasn't been picking up most bits of treasure.

He then sorted out the Beastmaster and Lehtinan at the Copper Coronet.  Bernard then offered Stonefire for sale and I realised I'd made a mistake in setting Gracchus' alignment when he proved unable to wield Azuredge!

The Suna Seni ambush was made easy by Bhaal horror on the way to the Graveyard.  Gracchus did various tasks there before going down to confront Pai'Na - the RoAC ensuring he would not be affected by poison before a potion of firebreath had done its work by finishing off the druid along with all but one spider.  He then cleared the upper tombs - Arbane protecting against shadow fiends and RoAC the horror from the crypt king.

Gracchus talked to Mae'Var and, while going to get a necklace for him, saved Renfeld (getting up to level 11 in the process).  After returning him Gracchus used the RoAC to let him one-shot Prebek and Sanasha before looting the Harpers and watching Xzar get assassinated.

He then went after Rayic Gethras.  However, after going up and down the stairs a few times (and thinking he had the mage where he wanted him), Rayic disappeared.  Resting didn't get him to appear again so it looks like that quest can't be completed.

Moving on to Trademeet Gracchus got the efreeti bottle, Taquee amusingly shaking off his morale failure by petrifying a soldier there.  With the reward for the genies Gracchus was able to buy everything he wanted from Trademeet - just.  His inventory was full up though so he returned to Athkatla to sort out the kidnappers (in order to drop the red fabric), then went to Watcher's Keep to get a potion case.

Bg2ee run update 1.7,

Hear text as mp3,

Chapter 3 by Puk Darkstar,

I entertained recruiting a half-orc but he was too stupid to see that murdering a priest in the temple district, just isn't that smart… he wouldn't budge so we killed the git and rehired Yoshimo for the next attacks instead. Haer'Dalis purchased an anti-mage flail from a guy in the slums and Sarah practically clinks with all the daggers she insists on collecting but I must admit the look on a mages face when her daggers go right through their protections is worth the extra weighty packs.

baldr145.jpgbaldr146.jpgbaldr147.jpgbaldr148.jpgbaldr149.jpgbaldr150.jpg

We took our time dismantling the shadow guild… mostly because we had to keep retreating to rest and replenish our spells but the final boss made the classic mistake of letting us set the attack pace by cowering behind a door with his remaining guards.

My tactics;
1. Yoshimo laid half his traps at the door, we summoned one skeleton warrior and one fire elemental (just to draw some spells) then opened the door with a triple shot combo of 'Silence', 'Glitterdust' and 'Horror' because these are cheap and pet friendly.
2. Aran lost his nerve and unexpectedly ran out into the hall with us, leaving his hapless guards to deal with our two pets so I just shut the door behind him and we clobbered the git.
3. Yoshimo placed his remaining traps and Sarah fired a swarm at Aerie just as she opened the door again and that really ended the fight for the guards… Yoshimo found a summoning ring in a desk and Aerie decided she liked Linvails' necklace as a keep-sake.

p.s. on a more personal note Neera had a spell mishap that took all the fun out of the sea voyage… seeing her in a swimming suit just about makes me want to heave but I told her it was sea-sickness and when we get to the island I'm gonna ask the local priest to try every dispel she has in the shop, no matter what it costs me!

@Grond0 - sorry to hear the end of your archer

@USSNorway - even on maximum volume I can't make out what you are saying on your MP3's...

@Epsil0 - exciting fight - an enemy with the black blade of disaster is formidable indeed!

@Corey_russell - Thank you, though it was going absolutely crazy for me. I didn't expect to face level 9 spells down there... Live and learn, I guess. I've managed to get to Spellhold thus far, faced Jon for the first time, but suffered another permadeath due to a certain spell...

Ismalin, Elven Archer, update 3

The first order of business is filling up my bags: I actually had more than enough space than I needed! We free the bards after that, and invite the Tiefling back into the party. The second point of order is grabbing two new team members. Since I'm going absolutely crazy trying to mitigate the potions of invisibility that all the thieves are constantly spamming, Keldorn is a must-have for his True Sight. I need one more melee as well, and Rasaad is picked up to fill out my team.

So we start the Unseeing Eye quest only to abandon it immediately, a slightly more experienced Inquisitor in tow. I'm not going back down there until I'm Beholder immune, which could be problematic since I have absolutely no idea where any of the equipment I need is. From there, we go to Trademeet to grab Rasaad, finish off those quests and check the merchants for a part of the Gesen bow or Tansheron's bow: no luck. The trolls and druids are handily killed off though, and we found the Water's Edge scimitar, a good +3 weapon for Rasaad for when we need the to-hit. I accidentally trigger the Rakshasha fight with Keldorn: I had no idea he would detect the evil from her! Even so, we kill off the genies to look for loot, and we weren't disappointed: we got the Ring of Regeneration, which has probably healed us for more health than everything else combined so far.

I want my stronghold now as well, as well as the randomized loot, so we finally head to Umar hills. This is where I first see the content for Wings: mechanically, this affected Aerie by giving her a familiar and thus 12 extra health. We make peace between an ogre and the village, got a couple sweethearts hitched, and finally off to the temple itself. Another bug manifested itself here as even though I had the wardstone and cast nothing but buffs in his room to prepare for the Shade Lord, Thaxxy made his attack speech and I skedaddled before I could see him. (I checked later in a I'm-not-being-serious-I-just-want-to-check-this-out moment where I died: he is indeed aggressive, which makes taking him down later is going to be really, really hard.) Without the improved Shade Lord part installed, the fight's over really quickly though I get no loot of any real benefit.

We do the first Ranger stronghold quest, and now I have 4 days to burn to get the next quest: obviously, I can't go do Spellhold at this point. So we do a couple quick things around Athkatla, freeing the slaves, returning a teddy-bear to a ghost and a bunch of tomb-robbing. It still wasn't enough; with the Ring of Regeneration and only 1 primary spell caster, we aren't running out of spells or health quickly at all. In Hendak's special wares, we found the gloves of dexterity, giving Keldorn a good AC (finally!) We're forced to do a couple quests to regain party-members: the murder of Acton Balthis to get Haer'Dalis back again, and Keldorn's personal quest to get him back again. Finally we kill Pai'na and travel to the southern part of the graveyard district. Had a scare here as, since I still don't have any sort of negative plane protection, Aerie is drained to level 1/3. A potion of invisibility and trips to a temple restores the situation, though. Delon spawned as we got out, but... he said he had a task for us and then he randomly walked off the screen. I checked my journal dates: it's exactly 4 days at this point since the last quest. But he's gone, and without talking to him, I auto-fail the quest, and I didn't DO ANYTHING to fail it.

Delon's CLUA'd back in. Interestingly enough, he does the exact same thing and walks off the screen. So I do it again and talk to him before he walks away: I'm right, the time's correct and he gives me the quest, but scripts are going crazy. We shot down all the marauders quite easily, and now we have 4 more days before I'm given the last quest... Sheesh. Somewhere around here I got the cloak of non-detection, going to Ismalin.

I'm still hunting down Tasheron's bow, and according to the spoilers for IR, most of the locations it could be at that I haven't visited are post-Underdark except for a few. One of them's in Firkraag's dungeon, one in the Vampire pool, one in the Illithid lair in the sewers, and one in the Harper hold (that I didn't know about at this point. It still could be there, but I can't very well check now.) Firkraag's first: I cheesed this dungeon so much. The first thing to overcome were those wretched golems: I have no ranged +3 weapons, so Iron golems are driving me crazy. The two stone golems are killed by the returning hatchet, and I end up just having Haer'Dalis melee the iron golem to death with Stoneskins.

Next hurdle is the ridiculous undead in the lair: again, no NPP and there's like 3 vampires or something Solution? Invis 15' radius and body-block off the doors while Ismalin shoots past them into the room. This worked so well that you'll see the same strategy used in Bodhi's lair. And in other various places as well. We made it through with only one level drain since one vampire needed +3 weapons for some reason instead of the +2 which I could easily supply. The guardians are all easy with Keldorn's 110% fire resistance, and the assassin squad is hit by two Silences and then melee'd to death. We kill Conster and surprise surprise, no bow.

Next spot: Illithid lair. I thought I could just use Chaotic Commands and kite them with Ismalin: how wrong I was. The ulitharids have some new ability called Ballistic shot that did 40 damage to me in a single blow. I high-tailed it out of there. Devon still hasn't spawned, with one day to go, and the last quest I feel comfortable doing is Rasaad's temple line. How wrong I was: everything was fine until the final battle outside of the temple where everyone fell besides Ismalin: Aerie's Stoneskins had fallen a long time ago and she died instantly to two simultaneous backstabs, Haer'Dalis lost his skins to an archer and fell soon after, and Rasaad, Yoshimo, and Keldorn just got mobbed beyond any hope of surviving. The rest of the battle is won solely by Ismalin stealth-shooting and later using the various elemental staffs to call elementals to tank for him. Two charges of the RoR later, Aerie and Rasaad are back up and the latter's commenting on all that just happened. We gather all the gear and head for a temple to raise everyone else.

Last Ranger quest is finished, and Cerberus is looking like a powerful companion indeed.

Vampire lair: same cheesy tactics of invisible NPC wall were used, and even Tanova didn't stand a chance. She seemed to become EASIER for me in SCS, though that might be because I was prepared and interrupted almost all her spells with well-placed arrows. She gave Keldorn and Haer'Dalis two negative levels, but still nothing that couldn't be fixed by a visit to the temple. Bodhi was tanked by a few summons and shot to death, and then we're off to Spellhold.

The labyrinth proves to be no trouble with no near-death experiences. The battle with Jon though... SCS should stop using spells that I'm unfamiliar with. >.> Haer'Dalis had just given me his talk about asking me to stop romancing Aerie when we went into battle; we didn't actually lose anyone in the battle itself, but the mop up proved fatal to the dear bard. Jon had cast a Sphere of Chaos, and it was still active: Haer'Dalis evidently failed a save fighting off the murderers and got disintegrated: I didn't even know that this was a possibility! Something in my install is causing deaths via disintegration to preserve items, so nothing's lost, but... I'm down to 5 men in the Underdark with no hope of getting a 6th.

Death list: Anomen, Nalia, Haer'Dalis

Currently traveling with: Rasaad, Keldorn, Imoen, and Aerie.

Bg2ee run update 1.8,

Hear text as mp3,

Damsels in distress by Imoen,

I still can't believe my brother came all this way to get me but the last days sound like he took the greatest risks. Once on the island, he helped two, hum, let's just call them girls, and went up against a powerful mage called Perth… the guy killed Haer'Dalis with his opening shot so Puk ordered a retreat outside (something I wouldn't have considered) and rebuffed before coming back for a second try. My brother likes to study spell defences and it seems that Perth forgot to put up any 'magic missile' blocker, anyway, the loot was a book that shoots a fireball and Neera also gained the ability to cast a level six spell just as they entered spell hold.

baldr152.jpgbaldr153.jpgbaldr154.jpgbaldr155.jpgbaldr156.jpgbaldr157.jpg

Puk thanked me for my help during a dream he had where he killed a dark version of himself with the help of some skeletons and now we are back together again, almost naked in a dangerous maze and being hunted by vamps but at least we have each other… yipee!

I've listened to several and volume is fine.

Corey - is it possible that in your volume mixer you've got the application playing the mp3 set low even if your general volume is set high?

I don't think that would help - the component is intended to prevent most 'chunking' from damage that would take HPs below -10, rather than to help with other permanent deaths like disintegration or having a petrified statue broken.

Gracchus - dwarf kensai (update 2)

At Watcher's Keep there were no vampiric wraiths on duty, so Gracchus cleared the top floor.  He did get poisoned by an ettercap at one point, but that ended without him even being required to rest, use clerical services or read a green scroll.  He got to level 12, taking his third point in two-weapon fighting.  The statues were largely taken down while they were concentrating on Ras, but Gracchus did also use Sister Garlena to heal him before finishing off the archer statue, while Kitthix also contributed with his web.

Returning to Trademeet Gracchus made his way through the Druid Grove, picking up Belm to help in his assault on the rakshasas (the fight being made easy by Kitthix webbing Adratha).  After watching Cernd take control of the Grove he returned to Trademeet and cleared the tomb and saved a philosopher.

Back in Athkatla Gracchus went lich hunting using protection from undead and a single potion of speed to kill the 4 of them (level 14) and get the ring of Gaxx.  He then used the rod of terror to kill the minotaurs and a pirate while upgrading his charisma to 25.

At the Bridge District he solved the skinner murders.  The bone golem's physical resistance let it survive longer than I expected and Gracchus had to resort to his new throwing hammer to finish it off.  With that quest done Gracchus nipped back to Trademeet to finish off his work there by helping Tiris.

The final action of the session saw Gracchus hack his way through the de'Arnise Hold (level 15).  The yuan-ti mage was silenced and his attempted vocalize interrupted.  Pretty much everything else on the way to find Torgal was just meleed, with occasional help from his summons (particularly against Glaicas), though the iron golem was finished off by throwing hammer.  Just for a change Gracchus accepted the offer of a stronghold.

Negative. I've checked all volume controls and per application, they are all on maximum. The web site brings up a volume control and that is on maximum. I am using headphones but no volume control on them. I just won't be able to hear her files. I never play MP3's on this computer, but don't know what relevance that is. I am using chrome too, I didn't try explorer.

EDIT: Explorer used media player, but still unhearable on max volume. That is, I can hear talking, but it's so low can't make out what is being said.

Ismalin, Elven Archer, 4th and final update

Though this technically didn't end in Ismalin's death, it broke one of my unspoken rules: Imoen has to receive her soul back before she can be permanently killed. The Balor was the one that did her in; though she wasn't chunked or disintegrated, her portrait left my party. Truth be told, I was probably dead anyways: I don't think I could survive the Underdark with only 4 moderately-underleveled characters. Oh well; I'll be taking a short break in between runs just to get my coursework done.

Hard luck Epsil0.  The Balor's vorpal attack does result in permanent death in vanilla.  I believe that SCS attempted to change this, but that might be affected by other mods you've installed.

@Epsil0, I think you did pretty well to survive the SCS warden/Irenicus at your levels

Okay I've decided to begin another run with a randomized party. I was going to start in BG1, but I realized it defeats the purpose of randomizing proficiencies/spells etc.

Mod setup:
  • G3 fixpack
  • PnP free action (for convenience, too annoying to remove ring -> haste -> re-equip)
  • Ghreyfain's Spellhold (Bodhi hunts player)
  • aTweaks spell changes
  • Polytweak spell and item changes (playtesting my own mod prior to release)
  • Zyraen's stage based XP cap - very hard setting
  • Wisp's item randomizer, mode 2 (more comprehensive)

Zyraen's XP cap works as follows (very few players on this board seem to use it):

SoA is divided into 4 stages, each with its own XP Cap.
03 - Chapters 1-3
05 - Chapters 4-5
06 - Chapter 6
07 - Chapter 7

ToB is divided into 4 stages, each with its own XP Cap
YS - prior to killing Yaga Shura and completing Pocketplane Challenge 2
SD - prior to killing Sendai and completing Pocketplane Challenge 3
AB - prior to killing Abazigal and completing Pocketplane Challenge 4
BL - after completing Pocketplane Challenge 4

...

Very hard (stages)

03 750000
05 1200000
06 1600000
07 2000000
YS 3000000
SD 3750000
AB 4500000
BL 5500000

Game difficulty also set to hard.

The reason for no SCS/Ascension or other tactical mods this time should be obvious

The party...

  1. Anastasia (protagonist) CN human swashbuckler. Stats: 12, 16, 13, 11, 6, 17. Proficient in katana, dagger, club and single weapon style. 39 hp
  2. Hogni, CN gnome barbarian. 14, 12, 10, 14, 13, 12. Mace, quaterstaff, halberd (specialized), crossbow and shortsword. 61 hp
  3. Ashi, NG half elf ranger. 13, 16, 16, 10, 14, 13. Longsword (specialized), axe, katana, club and sling. 64 hp
  4. Erik, NE human skald. 14, 13, 10, 18, 12, 16. Axe, flail, shortbow, sling. 42 hp
  5. Kirsti, NG human abjurer. 13, 12, 13, 15, 17, 10. Dagger and dart. 26 hp at level 8
  6. Telax, LN half elf fighter. 14, 14, 18, 11, 14, 11. Shortsword (specialized), warhammer (specialized), dagger and sling. 88 hp

Note - I made up the name "Telax", but it does seem to be the name of a real company and even some people.

Thoughts on the party, I was actually very lucky to roll up 3 characters with weapon specialization. The abjurer also has high enough wisdom to dual-class to cleric: This would allow her to buff her hp and physical resistance to an acceptable level (since she hasn't got stoneskins) and more importantly provide some way to protect the party (especially the PC) from Power Words and other death magic. I fear the nerfed XP progression will make dual classing difficult, which is why I'm wavering.

I was too lazy to transcribe the caster's spellbooks, so just took a screenshot, these are their known spells:

Gracchus - dwarf kensai (update 3)

Seeking some protection from level drain Gracchus attempted to fob Sir Sarles off with some inferior illithium - that was enough to take him to level 16.  Continuing his work for the temples Gracchus then went to recover a relic for Lathander (accidentally giving Travin a finders fee in the process).  Then he used his summons while sorting out the Fallen Paladins.

After handing over some cash to Gaelan Bayle Gracchus quickly ran through Aran's tasks.  He got to level 17, but didn't complete vampire HQ immediately - instead picking up the mace of disruption at the cost of being drained once.  Gracchus has not been picking up most treasure and didn't have the cash to upgrade it immediately - so went after Mencar's gang.  Brennan was webbed by Kitthix and soon killed, while Gracchus killed Pooky, but couldn't quite finish off Amon with his initial attack.  However, after being hit with a scorcher he disappeared and let Mencar take revenge on Amon for the damage he'd suffered.  Once regenerated Gracchus quickly finished off Mencar and Smaeluv and ransacked the bodies.

Now with enough funds he upgraded the mace and got his drain restored before returning to the vampires.  He approached Tanova invisibly and used a sunray to kill her.  Downstairs, he dual-wielded Daystar and the iMoD and quickly worked through the enemies.  The same combination dealt with Lassal and then Bodhi - the latter with the help of his summons.  Reporting back to Aran got Gracchus to level 18, but he didn't immediately depart for Brynnlaw.

Instead he decided it was time to swap the Claw of Kazgaroth for a +2 ring - leaving his spell saving throw at -3 (still low enough to provide an automatic save against all standard spells) - before setting off for Umar Hills.  I was being lazy there and nearly paid for that when Gracchus took the sun gem from the pedestal.  Rather than get into a running fight he just slugged it out with the summoned shadows without using any buffs or abilities.  He still had a comfortable number of HPs in hand at the end of the fight, but he wasn't the only one feeling distinctly weak at the knees when I checked his record . I was a bit more cautious after that, normally only taking on one enemy at a time, and Gracchus had no problems working his way through the remaining undead (level 19) - both liches being destroyed by the iMoD after finding their spells were useless.  Typically the Shade Lord saves against a sunray and requires a further hit to kill him, but this time he was just burnt to a crisp immediately.  I wanted a bit of revenge on Thaxy for Spectre's death so Gracchus had a go at him as well.  He was prepared to retreat and use missiles if necessary, but a distraction from the efreeti, a first use of Ilbratha mirrors and Gaxx haste proved sufficient to deal with the dragon (level 20).

Before leaving the area Gracchus went to pick up Valygar's body - which Valygar himself no longer required.  Back in Athkatla that was immediately put to use in entering the Planar Sphere.  Kitthix did a good job there in intercepting a maze by the halflings and Gracchus got to level 21 by killing the elder orb before the golem could finish it off.  Gracchus stayed out of sight while summons put Lavok on the floor and then followed in behind Ras to get a demon heart.  For Tolgerias he used his summons to drain opposition summons and spells before closing for the kill.  The efreeti led the way into the fire room to soak up fire damage; I expected Gracchus to be able to kill the noble efreeti quickly using Gaxx haste for 9 APR, but Kitthix's web tangle made doubly sure of that.  The engine room golems then got Gracchus to level 22 before he took Lavok outside for a last sight of the sky.

Best of luck polytope.  The XP restriction does look like it should offer a significant challenge (it certainly would affect gameplay greatly for a solo game).

Pets to the frontline by Puk,

We let the pets do all the heavy lifting for a slow and steady trek… I was court a bit off guard when the loon pack charged downstairs, dragging us along without a chance to recover our gear first but I needn't have worried.

baldr159.jpgbaldr160.jpgbaldr161.jpgbaldr162.jpg

My nemesis put up a solid defence without really thinking it through… Sarah opened with a (self-targeted) swarm catching our dopplegangers as they entered the fight and that’s when I noticed the key to winning. I almost dismissed it as [too obvious] but when we finished off our ids with fireballs it also smoked Irenicus.

Deep sea fishing by Puk,

My sister can't lay traps but she proved herself good enough at sneaking to fetch the horn for Saemon so we could leave Brynnlaw… unfortunately we didn't get far, unless you count downwards as advancing and woke up to find ourselves fighting as gladiators for some kind of fish masters. Naturally we won the round, despite still suffering from the after effects of our adduction except for Aerie… she got hit with 'Maze' during the Githyanki attack and wouldn't respond to anyone. I prayed to TALOS and he responded something about a mighty power (called a shadow keeper) would set her back to rights.

baldr163.jpgbaldr164.jpgbaldr165.jpgbaldr166.jpg

We met many strange things within this cave while searching for a prince… he almost seemed reasonable after dealing with the king but I felt the surface world was safer without these guys lurking under it and cleansed the cavern with extreme prejudice before descending into the underdark proper.

p.s. on a somewhat brighter note my power has increased again to the point that I can now call forth a fire storm to smite my many antagonists for both personal advancement and the glory of TALOS!

They use the same files corey... you could try firefox as that has it's own without touching explorer.

A good free player is zoom http://www.inmatrix...._download.shtml

Gracchus - dwarf kensai (update 4)

Gracchus has finished his intended work in Athkatla for the moment and is about to embark for Bynnlaw.

He started the session by returning to the Temple sewers to do a bit more on the Unseeing Eye quest.  He got to level 23 at the bridge (belatedly remembering that he could have used deathblow on the beholders there), but was unable to make further progress - his personal restrictions against item-based healing leaving him with no way to kill the demon in the temple.

Moving on, Mekrath died in a Kitthix web and his yuan-ti evaporated in deadly blows.  Following a trail to the Planar Prison Gracchus gave the same treatment to some bounty hunters there - greater deathblow lasts for 2 rounds and combining that with his first use of a WW is really pretty vicious.  Quickly moving round the area, one Gaxx haste disposed of the Master of Thralls and a second the Warden, while he was dealing with some troublesome thralls.  The yuan-ti then provided Gracchus with enough XP for level 24.

The next target was Windspear Hills and Gracchus made rapid progress there.  A sunray and follow-up melee on lots of vampires got him to level 25.  Clearing the genies, before they could react properly, and making the mask was enough for level 26.  Samia's crew were hampered by a stinking cloud and failed to do much damage and nor did Tazok.  Conster failed to get a spell off under a GWW assault.  Gracchus produced some fire elementals from his staff for the first time to try and get them to distract Firkraag.  That only worked to a very limited extent though and he was still breathed on and malisoned (responding to the latter with an invulnerability potion).  Gracchus was attacking during a couple of GWWs with the non-proficient FoA - with a view to swapping to Dragonslayer once Firkraag was slowed.  That never happened, but Firkraag was unable to stand up even under the reduced damage output (level 27).

Back in Athkatla Gracchus attacked Tarnor's gang under cover of a stinking cloud - allowing him to decorate the ceiling with Gaius before his buffs fired. A couple of GWWs later and the rest were also dead.  The nearby illithid enclave soon fell as well - the speed with which Gracchus killed the illithids meaning he didn't need any defensive buffs (except DUHM) or summons.  He got to level 28 there.

I've listened to a few, just checked again this morning and volume is fine (Chrome).

I don't particularly like the Windows sound options because there are far too many sliders and options available, some of which appear to duplicate or override each other. e.g. on my laptop the speaker icon in the system tray. Left click brings up a master slider, mute and mixer. Mixer brings up Device and Applications. Right click brings up options for volume mixer, playback devices, recording devices, sound and volume control options. Volume mixer is the same as before, playback devices allows me to check the headphones are the default device but has more tabs. Recording devices and Sound go to different tabs also accessed by volume mixer. Volume control options looks like it splits devices out into different mixer settings.

That's all annoying enough but I can remember my previous laptops/computers would also have a similar but different coloured volume control in the system tray too, because the device manufacturer had their own software as well as Windows.

I did see the Sounds > Communication tab hasthe option to reduce other sounds (mute, by 80%, by 20%) when comms activity is detected - was wondering if you had the same and for some reason it was dropping playback by 80% because it thought there was other comms activity. Worth checking.
