Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 54 - (update 5)
Jackie, halfling thief (Grond0) & Pariah, dwarf cleric (Gate70)
As Gate70's post suggests, today's session was not without problems and Jackie survived more by luck than judgement ...
The session started with a trip to see the Unseeing Eye. That was playing to Pariah's strengths as various undead exploded around him in between various beholders killing themselves against the Shield of Balduran. Jackie did have to be careful as the beholders' attacks were buggy and regularly sent rays lancing through surrounding walls throughout the area. However, he used the rod on the Eye before returning it to Amaunator and setting a few traps for Gaal. Meanwhile though, Pariah ran into trouble against the blind priests. Five of them had been burned up in a newly learned fire storm, but the final one managed to shrug off attacks (helped by Jackie continuing to shoot at him without noticing he had physical mirror up
) to land 2 flame strikes on Pariah - the second of which was fatal.
Looking for some more undead to practice on Pariah led the way to Windspear Hills. Some monsters tried to give him a warm welcome, but got more than they bargained for from Pariah's new firestorm toy. Moving on to the dungeon, his turning proved potent against vampires, but there was an early warning when Jackie had to use an invisibility potion to shake off a chasing golem - a stone golem becoming a nasty challenge after appearing to have been affected by an area haste ability from a clay golem. After recovering a helmet, at the cost of summoning an air elemental, another lot of golems appeared. Pariah felt his AC of -13, together with a girdle providing -4 vs blunt weapons, should have allowed him to melee them. However, they hit regularly and his attempts to take healing potions proved too slow.
Their low APR also meant the duo had a few problems with a greater wolfwere - before Jackie found a nice backstab. The genies were easy enough using fire protection, but the fight against Samia was also more difficult than expected after all Pariah's skeleton warriors were destroyed by an opening death spell. Pariah cast a firestorm on himself, but hadn't pre-prepared with fire protection and had to undertake a difficult juggling act between fire protection and AC to fend off the attacking enemies. This time though, healing potions did prove just sufficient to keep him alive.
After Conster burned up in some pre-laid traps the duo attempted to take on Firkraag. That always had the potential to be a difficult fight and that certainly proved to be the case. A necklace of 7 traps round him together with some initial damage from summons got the dragon to near death, but further spells failed to damage him and the duo's attacks hit only rarely and failed to pierce stoneskins. As a result Firkraag was able to kill or buffet away the summons before sending Pariah away unconscious with another buffet. With no other distractions nearby he then turned on Jackie and damaged him with a breath before following up with an acid arrow. Jackie used 2 Bhaal heals to stop the acid arrow from killing him, but Firkraag fixated on him and came in with the intention of biting his head off. He responded by swallowing a potion of speed and managed to keep out of attack range for a bit. However, with HPs down to 4 and the acid still burning he then sacrificed all his principles by taking an elixir of health (I think it's been quite a few runs since I last took any sort of healing potion - even in MP) to just keep his head above water. He tried heading up the stairs to get to the exit, but Pariah was still too far away to allow the party transition. That seemed likely to be Jackie's last stand, but he luckily managed to find enough of a gap between the dragon's attack attempts to circle round him and get back into the main room. There he was able to use a skeleton warrior returning from a buffeting to break contact with Firkraag and get back to the exit point. Pariah looked like he would be able to join him there, but Firkraag unleashed a breath on him which proved to be more than he could take before chasing after Jackie again.
Jackie then led Firkraag upstairs (where he appears out of sight of the normal exit point) before returning to use the rod of resurrection on Pariah for the 3rd time in the session. After collecting his equipment the duo then rested and went back upstairs. With Firkraag unable to move into position to melee, Pariah just ensured both had high levels of fire resistance while using missile weapons to cheesily wear him down. The final action of the session was to report back to Garren on the death of his nemesis.
