They use the same files corey... you could try firefox as that has it's own without touching explorer.

A good free player is zoom http://www.inmatrix...._download.shtml

I tried firefox, and it used media player as well.

I've listened to a few, just checked again this morning and volume is fine (Chrome).

I don't particularly like the Windows sound options because there are far too many sliders and options available, some of which appear to duplicate or override each other. e.g. on my laptop the speaker icon in the system tray. Left click brings up a master slider, mute and mixer. Mixer brings up Device and Applications. Right click brings up options for volume mixer, playback devices, recording devices, sound and volume control options. Volume mixer is the same as before, playback devices allows me to check the headphones are the default device but has more tabs. Recording devices and Sound go to different tabs also accessed by volume mixer. Volume control options looks like it splits devices out into different mixer settings.

That's all annoying enough but I can remember my previous laptops/computers would also have a similar but different coloured volume control in the system tray too, because the device manufacturer had their own software as well as Windows.

I did see the Sounds > Communication tab hasthe option to reduce other sounds (mute, by 80%, by 20%) when comms activity is detected - was wondering if you had the same and for some reason it was dropping playback by 80% because it thought there was other comms activity. Worth checking.

I did try to set the sounds communication tab to "do nothing" but still can't make it out. Now I'm wondering if perhaps my problem has something to do with countries. My computer tells me the MP3 is "UKEnglish" and Grond0 and Gate70 are both in the UK so maybe that's why it works for them....

EDIT: I will try a different computer tonight and see if I get the same problem or doe sit work.

FWIW I can hear those ussnorway's mp3s just fine (both with Chrome/build-in player and IE/via media player). And I'm not in UK.

Gracchus - dwarf kensai (5th and final update)

Gracchus started the session by taking ship to Brynnlaw.  He GWW'd Perth and threw away his book of infinitetwo spells.

Moving into Spellhold he worked his way through most of the first level.  I was being slightly lazy about making progress and ultimately that proved costly against a cheezy lich.  Generally I would draw the other enemies away from the lich and kill them one by one.  However, with only a skeleton warrior left accompanying the lich Gracchus went in using a GWW to try and get a quick kill on it.  The skeleton warrior survived though at near death when the lich cast its timestop and that proved crucial when Gracchus was stunned during that.  He would have had a pretty good chance of surviving a stun against the lich on its own (depending on just how long it took to produce an efreeti), but none at all with the skeleton warrior attacking.
Stunned_zps5452022e.jpg

Of course he should not have been stunned in the first place - his saving throw vs spells was -3, which should have provided an automatic save against the symbol spells - and in fact the saving throw shown in the screenshot looks as though it probably was actually against symbol stun ...

@Grond0: Sorry to hear the end of your Kensai. But remember, the symbol: stun I don't believe even offers a save, you are only immune to the spell if your HP AT THAT MOMENT is 90 or higher. I see your screenshot you were at 85 so thus the stun landed on ya. A heal potion earlier would have saved ya...(I know not what you want to hear, but...)

You're thinking of PW: stun Corey - symbol: stun offers a save vs spells at -4, i.e. a saving throw of -3 should guarantee success.  Even if the spell used had been PW: stun he would still have been unaffected as he had more than 90 HP at the point the spell affected him ...

Zyraen's XP cap works as follows (very few players on this board seem to use it):

I've just installed that, but noted that the values included in the tp2 file are not the same as those in the readme for hard and very hard settings.  The hard actual values in the mod are those stated as very hard in the readme.  The very hard ones reduce the values quoted in your post by up to 1/3 - I didn't know if you would want to change them back to the values in the readme ...

I've noticed this kind of funny thing happening with saving throws before (character with save vs death = 1 being diseased by a mummy or save vs spells = 1 being disabled by Hold Person).

I don't know the cause but I think it might happen specifically with saving throws boosted by equipped items rather than limited duration spell/potion buffs, something to do with the order in which the game applies effects, bottom line I don't trust my characters saves unless they are several points better than they "need" to be vs any effect.

Good spotting, these are the real values:

  •   Chapter 2-3 500000
  •   Chapter 4-5 900000
  •   Chapter 6 1200000
  •   Chapter 7 1600000
  •   ToB pre Yaga 2000000
  •   ToB pre Sendai 2950000
  •   ToB pre Abazigal 3700000
  •   ToB finale 4500000
Not going to dual class my abjurer then. :) Will report when I make some progress.

@Aasim the Fire Shuriken are a replacement for Melf Minute Meteors, main reason for that change was because MMM exhausts spell protections too quickly with 5 apr. FS produces fewer missiles that give less attacks, do more damage, and create a cloud of smoke that penalizes enemy attack rolls (not cumulative) for a short time. I'll note other important spell changes as I go.

I've noticed spwi325, yes - you can make Melf's into "0 spell level" so they bypass spell protections (newest SR does that). Kind of makes sense - it's supposed to be a rock, not a spell.

Quick question Grond0 - you didn't have the claw of kazagaroth (or however that ring is spelled) on did you? Some equipment (incorrectly) effects get dispelled by a dispel magic, the Claw is one of those that get dispelled in vanilla. Thus your saves would drop after the dispel magic in this scenario and the save vs. symbol stun would no longer be automatic...

I know liches do ghoul touch - that couldn't have affected you?

I didn't have the Claw on and, in any case, the screenshot (taken within a second of him being stunned) shows his saving throw was at the expected -3.  He would have had an automatic saving throw against ghoul touch as well.

I think the explanation is as polytope set out, i.e. a momentary failure by the game to properly process the saving throw adjustments.  Over the years I've seen on many occasions characters briefly show incorrect saving throws on their records.  That's normally self-correcting, but can also usually be remedied by re-equipping items (sometimes that has to be done in a specific order).

Bg2ee run chapter 5 update 1.11,

Hear text as mp3,

Unlocking Pandora by Puk,

After purchasing some interesting and expensive scrolls we played with a strange machine with souls trapped inside, perhaps it’s a mark of where we are but only one of these proved friendly… we did try to 'Heal' one of them but he resisted. Casting a 'Freedom' released another mage with a quest to visit the elementals plain but even that ended badly… for him.

baldr167.jpgbaldr168.jpg

We decided to explore westwards and I had to un-leash my inner-Bhaal to safely dispatch some daemon knights however this made the wingless one furious and I promised not to do it again. Our (heavily buffed) pets made short work of the local fish but we retreated instead of trying to extend this trek to the surface and instead turned our steps deeper into the underdark once more.

baldr169.jpgbaldr170.jpgbaldr171.jpgbaldr172.jpg

The Svirfneblin traded us information for a spot of pest control and Aerie agreed to charge over a bridge, overpowering the somewhat obvious ambush her evil cousins tried to impede us with and then we struck a deal with lady silver, the gist of it is… safe passage back to the light in exchange for the rescue of her eggs.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 54 - (update 4)

Jackie, halfling thief (Grond0) & Pariah, dwarf cleric (Gate70)

It was a story of another day, another death for this morning's session.

Things started comfortably enough with Pariah enjoying the opportunity to turn some undead in the Graveyard.  Moving on to Mae'Var's tasks though Pariah struggled to deal with 2 stone golems in Rayic's house and had to resort to a healing potion when HPs were taken down to single figures.  Rayic himself was no problem - Pariah sneaking into a corner of his room and producing several skeleton warriors to mob him.  Mae'Var himself was given the opportunity to meet a couple of big bears, though the encounter didn't last long.  Jackie turned down the opportunity to run a guild of his own.

The next objective was Umar Hills.  Pariah was into the potions again there when he attacked the mimic on his own and took substantial acid damage.  He was much more comfortable at the ruined temple when wandering round watching shadows exploding all around him.  The greater mummies there were a bit more of a challenge, but a few summons and backstabs eventually helped out with those.  Thaxy was then taken on, but that proved a difficult encounter.  The dragon was immediately taken to near death by 4 traps laid by Jackie, but a series of summons, various spells and shots from Jackie made no further impression on him.  After the summons evaporated he breathed on Jackie and Pariah tried to distract him from having another go - with a predictable result.  After benefiting from the rod of resurrection upstairs Pariah did well to survive long enough to pick up his equipment and run away again (Thaxy ignoring his attempted sanctuary).

The final target for the day was Trademeet.  Traps and summons made short work of the genies and Pariah's decent armour class allowed him to tank a succession of trolls in the Druid Grove.  The druids themselves also proved no problem, with Pariah ruining Kyland Lind's day by holding him and 2 of his companions with a single spell. although Pariah did take quite a bit of damage leading various groups of myconids away while Jackie ran in and out backstabbing the spore colonies.  Back in Trademeet, Tiris was given a helping hand and the tomb cleared.  The reputation boost from those encounters allowed cheaper purchases of the Cloak of Displacement, Belt of Inertial Barrier and Dwarven Thrower (though with over 100k of gold still in the bank this duo don't really need to seek out bargains B)).

Stats:

Jackie, thief 16, 77 HPs (incl. 7 from ioun stone), 201 kills

Pariah, cleric 14, 71 HPs (incl. 5 from helm), 175 kills, 3 deaths (+2 in BG1)

Spectre {5} - human monk (update 1)

The latest incarnation of Spectre has had a comfortable run through BG1.  Things may be a bit more difficult in BG2 as a result of his XP being restricted by Zyraen's XP cap as follows.

03 750000 - Chapters 1-3
05 1200000 - Chapters 4-5
06 1600000 - Chapter 6
07 2000000 - Chapter 7
YS 3000000 - prior to killing Yaga Shura and completing Pocketplane Challenge 2
SD 3750000 - prior to killing Sendai and completing Pocketplane Challenge 3
AB 4500000 - prior to killing Abazigal and completing Pocketplane Challenge 4
BL 5500000 - after completing Pocketplane Challenge 4

Limiting XP to 2m within SoA will require significantly different tactics to my normal ones in BG2.  As a result I'll only be using my standard restrictions of no healing potions/antidotes and no item-based active healing for this run.

Here's his record on arrival in the dungeon.

Spectre {5} - human monk (update 2)

There was a bit of time left before breakfast to make a start on BG2 ...

It didn't take Spectre long in the dungeon to get up to level 9 and acquire some magic fists to kill the jailkeep golem with.  He successfully cleared everything else, though there were a couple of nasty moments.  The first was when he attempted to attack the cambion with a sling he had just picked up (apart from the bonus to hit that also meant the cambion got 2 attacks in a row when I wasn't expecting that)!  The second was when he was too successful in killing Ulvaryl quickly and had to save against horror from the battle mage just before killing her.

The final bit of action was to restore the circus to normal operation.  Spectre has also talked to Gaelan Bayle for the first time and bought the ring of air control.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 54 - (update 5)

Jackie, halfling thief (Grond0) & Pariah, dwarf cleric (Gate70)

As Gate70's post suggests, today's session was not without problems and Jackie survived more by luck than judgement ...

The session started with a trip to see the Unseeing Eye.  That was playing to Pariah's strengths as various undead exploded around him in between various beholders killing themselves against the Shield of Balduran.  Jackie did have to be careful as the beholders' attacks were buggy and regularly sent rays lancing through surrounding walls throughout the area.  However, he used the rod on the Eye before returning it to Amaunator and setting a few traps for Gaal.  Meanwhile though, Pariah ran into trouble against the blind priests.  Five of them had been burned up in a newly learned fire storm, but the final one managed to shrug off attacks (helped by Jackie continuing to shoot at him without noticing he had physical mirror up ) to land 2 flame strikes on Pariah - the second of which was fatal.

Looking for some more undead to practice on Pariah led the way to Windspear Hills.  Some monsters tried to give him a warm welcome, but got more than they bargained for from Pariah's new firestorm toy.  Moving on to the dungeon, his turning proved potent against vampires, but there was an early warning when Jackie had to use an invisibility potion to shake off a chasing golem - a stone golem becoming a nasty challenge after appearing to have been affected by an area haste ability from a clay golem.  After recovering a helmet, at the cost of summoning an air elemental, another lot of golems appeared.  Pariah felt his AC of -13, together with a girdle providing -4 vs blunt weapons, should have allowed him to melee them.  However, they hit regularly and his attempts to take healing potions proved too slow.

Their low APR also meant the duo had a few problems with a greater wolfwere - before Jackie found a nice backstab.  The genies were easy enough using fire protection, but the fight against Samia was also more difficult than expected after all Pariah's skeleton warriors were destroyed by an opening death spell.  Pariah cast a firestorm on himself, but hadn't pre-prepared with fire protection and had to undertake a difficult juggling act between fire protection and AC to fend off the attacking enemies.  This time though, healing potions did prove just sufficient to keep him alive.

After Conster burned up in some pre-laid traps the duo attempted to take on Firkraag.  That always had the potential to be a difficult fight and that certainly proved to be the case.  A necklace of 7 traps round him together with some initial damage from summons got the dragon to near death, but further spells failed to damage him and the duo's attacks hit only rarely and failed to pierce stoneskins.  As a result Firkraag was able to kill or buffet away the summons before sending Pariah away unconscious with another buffet.  With no other distractions nearby he then turned on Jackie and damaged him with a breath before following up with an acid arrow.  Jackie used 2 Bhaal heals to stop the acid arrow from killing him, but Firkraag fixated on him and came in with the intention of biting his head off.  He responded by swallowing a potion of speed and managed to keep out of attack range for a bit.  However, with HPs down to 4 and the acid still burning he then sacrificed all his principles by taking an elixir of health (I think it's been quite a few runs since I last took any sort of healing potion - even in MP) to just keep his head above water.  He tried heading up the stairs to get to the exit, but Pariah was still too far away to allow the party transition.  That seemed likely to be Jackie's last stand, but he luckily managed to find enough of a gap between the dragon's attack attempts to circle round him and get back into the main room.  There he was able to use a skeleton warrior returning from a buffeting to break contact with Firkraag and get back to the exit point.  Pariah looked like he would be able to join him there, but Firkraag unleashed a breath on him which proved to be more than he could take before chasing after Jackie again.

Jackie then led Firkraag upstairs (where he appears out of sight of the normal exit point) before returning to use the rod of resurrection on Pariah for the 3rd time in the session.  After collecting his equipment the duo then rested and went back upstairs.  With Firkraag unable to move into position to melee, Pariah just ensured both had high levels of fire resistance while using missile weapons to cheesily wear him down.  The final action of the session was to report back to Garren on the death of his nemesis.

Stats:

Jackie, thief 19, 85 HPs (incl. 7 from ioun stone), 262 kills

Pariah, cleric 17, 77 HPs (incl. 5 from helm), 299 kills, 6 deaths (+2 in BG1)

Spectre {5} - human monk (update 3)

Spectre started work at the Copper Coronet - using stealth to ensure no animals would be ready to answer the Beastmaster's call.

Stealth and horror allowed easy victories in the Suna Seni and Renfeld ambushes.  A first use of the RoAC then allowed Prebek & Sanasha to be one-shotted.

At Watcher's Keep he bought the potion case then worked his way round to get the crimson dart - though he got a nasty shock in the process.  There were no vampiric wraiths so he also cleared the enemies on the top floor.  That got him to level 11, but his saving throws were still not good enough to guarantee survival against the FoD trap so that was left for now.  However, Spectre did go to return the slippers to the lich.  That didn't go according to plan when he still turned hostile - resulting in Spectre being targeted with FoD after all :alien:.  He didn't have the RoAC active and had no potions that could help him at the time, so he had a 25% chance of death - but survived.  Subsequently I realised that I had initially picked up the bell, but then decided there was no point in killing the statues now, so went to put it back - but guess what was put back instead of the bell!

Back in Athkatla Spectre bought some PfU scrolls and paid Gaelan Bayle.  With his new +2 ring he was able to return to Watcher's Keep and finish looting there after using a green scroll on the lich.

Moving on to Umar Hills, Spectre bumped up against the XP limit for the first time.  He acquired Ilbratha, but with XP being useless to him for the moment then returned to Athkatla.  There he opened up access to the liches - killing the rakshasa in the sewers and spending all his money on Roger's potions in the process.  A PfU scroll and a storm giant strength potion then accounted for the liches and got the Ring of Gaxx for Spectre.  One point of interest there was that Spectre was using his stunning blow with Daystar to try and prevent Kangaxx from breaking morale and running - he did eventually successfully stun the demi-lich, but only with the blow that killed him anyway.

Next he went in search of some headgear - Pai'Na handing some over without a murmur.  To extend his summons he then used a couple of magic protection potions to get the berserker horn.

The final main destination for the session was Trademeet.  Taquee was stunned before Spectre took advantage of the genies' vulnerability to fire to finish the khan off.  At the Grove Spectre had no interest in XP, so just stealthed through to use summons to kill Dalok and his friends before watching Cernd snack on Faldorn.  He bought Ras, Belt of Intertial Barrier and Cloak of Displacement, but even after using Ras to clear the tomb, couldn't afford Blackblood.  To raise some money he popped back to Athkatla and attacked Mencar's group.  His summons webbed and killed Brennan, while a stinking cloud and firebreath accounted for the mage and his familiar.  Spectre could then pick the others off at his leisure.  The loot from there provided just enough funds to buy Blackblood as well as buying and recharging the Necklace of Missiles.

Spectre will still want to generate a bit more cash in order to upgrade the berserker horn next time, but then should be off to Spellhold.

Spectre {5} - human monk (4th and final update)

Back in Athkatla, Spectre returned to the Temple Sewers.  He waited out a couple of true sights from Gaius and then used his summons to make an initial attack.  That killed a couple of the opponents, before Spectre switched to using stealth shots.  Doing that, always out of sight of Gaius, finished everyone but the mage.  Spectre then did the same to him, firing and retreating out of sight while the bullet was in mid-air, and successfully killed him without ever being targeted.  During that he also made sure he never led enemies close to Roger, in order to prevent him going hostile.

He bought the remainder of Roger's potions that looked potentially useful before going to call on Mekrath - a web from Kitthix was enough to deal with him.  That provided enough funds to upgrade the berserker horn, but I decided that Spectre could also do with Mrs Cragmoon's potions of power before going to Spellhold.  To that end he attacked Captain Dennis and his team.  Things seemed to have opened OK with Kitthix webbing the cleric while the efreeti's stinking cloud affected several others.  However, I'd been interrupted by real life events during the attack preparation and appeared to have forgotten something here - in fact Spectre had equipped the RoAC, but not activated it (he could also have used Ilbratha mirrors and various potions, but I hadn't intended to bother with any of that for this combat).  Without his intended saving throw benefits Spectre fell down in the stinking cloud and took one hit from an opponent before the efreeti successfully distracted it.  I was hopeful about his chances when Spectre saved against the effect just as the efreeti died, but it still took him a while to climb to his feet and he was hit twice more while doing that (the first an auto-hit, but the second was a hit by Captain Dennis rolling a 2 - I suspect that would have missed if I'd re-equipped the Ring of Gaxx just before that instead of just after).
Ontheedge_zps827e48bb.jpg

That took Spectre down to 19 HPs and in imminent danger of death.  At that point I think a potion of invisibility would probably have saved him, but he tried running round the corner to hide instead (he was still vulnerable to the stinking cloud and I was trying to get out of that as soon as possible) and the mage unleashed a fireball before he got out of sight.  He tried taking a potion of fire resistance, which probably would have kept him alive, but I don't think he had time to drink that before the fireball struck ...

The Drow aren’t all bad--- we entered into some friendly competition at the inn then Phaere showed me a purk of having female employers but they are so anal about being on time that I couldn’t see myself hanging around for too long. I sent a cloaked Aerie running around the eye cavern looking for loot and we put the beat to a bottle blond so and so named Qilue (as it turns out, we only wanted her for her brain) then I nicked the real eggs under cloak and finally said goodbye to Ust'Natha and hi to my old pal Drizzt.

I was tempted to use my inner-bhaal again at one stage but the power buggs out after the first usage so I prayed to TELOS and he sent the demi-god Shadow-keeper to restore my abilities--- I was going to have a go at a lich named Deirex but after getting my power back I decided that I didn’t really need it yet--- Neera rolled her eyes at me and said something about “typical guy” but I could tell she was happy about it.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 54 - (update 6)

Jackie, halfling thief (Grond0) & Pariah, dwarf cleric (Gate70)

A generally more controlled session today saw the duo tick off a few more areas.

They started by using Tazok's key to enter the illithid enclave - chaotic commands provided protection for an assault based on traps, skeleton warriors, the odd firestorm and a few backstabs.

Next up was the de'Arnise Hold.  The enhanced edition appeared to have made Glaicas considerably more peaceful than in vanilla - he wandered off happily even after being backstabbed .  The yuan-ti mage found himself in a tangle - the web lasting just long enough to prove fatal to him.  Some skeleton warriors provided the firepower to finish off the umber hulks and then Torgal.

After retrieving Valygar's body from Umar Hills, the final destination of the session was the Planar Sphere.  There were a few cracks showing in defences here - the first when Pariah used a firestorm to kill some attackers, but without having protected himself against fire.  He then assaulted Lavok by himself - the Belt of Inertial Barrier allowing him to survive a wilting and follow-up magic missiles.  Trying another assault on Tolgerias without chaotic commands nearly proved costly when he was stunned twice by PW: stun - a wyvern was trying to eat him on the second occasion, but fortunately was unable to get past a nishruu.  After mazing Pariah Tolgerias eventually defeated himself by sunfiring an aerial servant when no opponents were visible and suffering attacks as a consequence.    Firestorm was used much more effectively in the cold room, with both Jackie and Pariah protected against fire, while the duo were properly buffed to tear the heart out of a demon in order to repower the Sphere.

Stats:

Jackie, thief 22, 92 HPs (incl. 8 from ioun stone), 323 kills

Pariah, cleric 19, 81 HPs (incl. 5 from helm), 343 kills, 6 deaths (+2 in BG1)

When I returned to Athkatla, I found the temple district in dismay because of a new false god--- I was given the task to sort it and a Paladin named Keldorn even tried to cower under our strength but I sent him packing. As it turns out the eye god was just a beholder and we put the pets onto them for an easy win--- a skeleton for the peons and Neera tanked the actual eye with her Hakeashar.

I returned triumphant to the temple and set about gaining my rightful place as a true son of TALOS;
1. I commissioned a statue for the temple but also stole the ore for my own weapon needs,
2. I advised someone on the correct way to divorce his wife--- then turned him in for a nice reward,
3. I collected a ring from a lesser temple and decided what reward I wanted and did a couple of smaller tasks before finally silencing the prattle coming from Dawnmaster Kreel.

p.s. on a more personal note, I find it particularly satisfying that at the end of all this double dealing our party has gained a respected name--- not yet popular perhaps but certainly much better.

Stand by your man by Neera,

OK I’m the first to admit Puk isn’t perfect but I admire his commitment to people he cares about--- even if we aren’t always useful or expedient, any way we asked the radiant hearts to assist us against the vamps and almost bumped into an orc anti-pally (hay, isn’t he supposed to be dead?) but Bodhi ambushed us at the graveyard entrance intending to kidnapp Puks’ one true love. Luckily that amazingly talented and beautiful lady also happens to be a wild mage and I’ve never been so happy to have a surge interrupt a spell.

The party made short work of the vamps after their ambush failed--- Aerie was especially devastating with her ‘False dawn’ cooking them in the tightly packed melee but we decided to retreat back to the temple to rest before going deeper and that’s when a new group of assassins decided to try their luck against us. I still had all my aoe spells and wasn’t in the mood to let my boyfriend be bullied--- on the up side Puk levelled up against them and says he can now use his ‘Turn’ to affect the peon type vamps.

The actual proper lair, proved easy enough with the combined might of Prelate Wessalen and Drizzt smashing Bodhi and even Tanova, who was the real power amongst them couldn’t maintain her shield for ever.
